Prince overlooked for first two Tests

Ashwell Prince has been left out of the first two Tests against Australia at home, as South Africa picked the 11 who played the three Tests in Australia recently, as well as left-arm swing bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe. Tsotsobe is the 12th player in the squad for the Johannesburg and Durban Tests, while Prince, Robin Peterson and Monde Zondeki have been dropped.Selection convener Mike Procter said it was a “difficult decision” to leave out Prince. “We are in the fortunate position of having seven world-class batsmen competing for six positions. It is a very healthy position for South African cricket,” said Procter. “Ashwell is understandably bitterly disappointed but he appreciates that he has not had the opportunity to play much cricket since his injury.”Prince averaged 75 in the successful Test series against England last summer but missed the Test series in Australia due to a broken thumb.”Tsotsobe performed very impressively from limited opportunities in Australia and he gives us extra bowling variety and depth,” said Procter. “We are monitoring Mark Boucher’s recovery from injury and we are confident that he will be fit to play by the time the series starts.”Mickey Arthur, South Africa’s coach, said the recent tour to Australia demonstrated the depth that the team had developed in the batting and bowling departments. “This augurs well for the Test squad going forward into another tough series against Australia. There is also the No. 1 ICC Test ranking at stake which will make the upcoming series even more special for players and supporters.”South African captain Graeme Smith, who is all set to make a comeback from injury by turning out for the Cape Cobras against the Dolphins at Newlands, said the side’s success over the past seven months gave them plenty to build on. “We are all looking forward to getting back into the five-day game and the particular challenges that it poses,” said Smith. “It will also be wonderful to be playing on our own grounds again in front of our own supporters.”The first Test starts on February 26, while the Durban match begins on March 6.South Africa Test squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher (wk), AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Paul Harris, Jacques Kallis, Neil McKenzie, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Miandad quits as PCB director

Javed Miandad has resigned as director general of the PCB, bringing to an abrupt end his fourth stint with the board since retiring as a player

Javed Miandad has quit as director-general of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), bringing to an abrupt end his fourth stint with the board since retiring as a player. At a little over two months, it was considerably shorter than any of his three tenures as coach.Miandad stepped down after differences emerged over the exact scope of his role. There was always a lack of clarity over the exact nature of his work. He spoke openly of it as being a troubleshooting role of sorts, delving into whatever areas needed fixing. He unveiled grand plans for domestic cricket, but talked of removing ICL bans and played an active part in arranging the Sri Lanka tour of three ODIs. He was also known to have said that he would don a tracksuit and get out on the field to coach if needed. But in the contract the board offered to him yesterday, which defined his role for the first time since he took over, he found that only domestic affairs were within his ambit and thus did not sign it. “The PCB wanted to restrict me to domestic affairs and I don’t want any interference in my work. I have therefore resigned,” Miandad told AFP.”All the agreements that we had with him so far were verbal,” PCB official Asif Suhail was quoted by espnstar.com. “When he was offered the appointment letter yesterday, Miandad refused the contract.”Though Wasim Bari, the director of HR and administration, refused to confirm the news, another board official said that Miandad wasn’t happy with the contract and neither its financial rewards. “He didn’t like what he had been offered,” the official told Cricinfo. “The scope of the role was that he look after domestic cricket, infrastructure growth and work with the games director at the National Cricket Academy and be based in Karachi. He wanted more. Monetarily he also felt he deserved more given his stature as a Test cricketer.”Miandad later spoke to reporters at Gaddafi Stadium and denied that finances had anything to do with the decision. He said he wasn’t leaving on bad terms, but just that the role wasn’t suitable to him. “Money has nothing to do with this. I wasn’t doing the job for money. I have no problems with the PCB, just that this role didn’t suit me. I don’t leave with a heavy heart and am always available to serve cricket in this country in any capacity possible,” he said.Though Miandad was one of the few men not in favour of the captaincy change that saw Younis Khan replace Shoaib Malik – it wasn’t the personnel as much as what he saw as the panic-stricken reaction to defeat which he objected to – it is understood that had nothing to do with his final decision.”My views on the matter were not sought but I am certainly not angry about yesterday’s decision. My thoughts were that you cannot base a decision on just a loss but my views weren’t sought. I have high hopes that Younis can do well,” he said.Miandad will continue to remain a member of the nine-member governing board committee, however.

Danny Ings could be benched vs Everton

Danny Ings may drop out of the starting line-up for Aston Villa’s clash with Everton on Saturday evening, Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece has said.

The lowdown

The 29-year-old has started all four of Villa’s Premier League matches since his £25m move from Southampton, playing all but 21 minutes.

He has two goals to his name so far, having netted in the opening day defeat at Watford and in the win over Newcastle, while he lined up alongside Ollie Watkins in a 5-3-2 formation away to Chelsea last time out as Dean Smith went with two starting centre-forwards for the first time this season.

Villa are looking to return to winning ways following a 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, but they face a stern test from an unbeaten Everton side with 10 points on the board from their first four games.

The latest

In a fan Q&A for Birmingham Live on Friday, Preece said that Aston Villa manager Smith will tweak his line-up today ‘as he sees fit’.

Ings ‘could well come out’ of the starting XI for the visit of the Toffees to Villa Park, with the journalist predicting plenty of tactical and personnel alternations over the course of the campaign given the depth of options available to him.

Preece replied to a supporter’s query by saying: “Dean will tweak as he sees fit [sic]. Ings could well come out tomorrow. I think we’ll see a lot of change in terms of shape and personnel this season which will be refreshing. Will it work? We’ll wait and see. A lot more options now.”

The verdict

If Smith is looking to give Ings a rest, perhaps it would be wiser to do so in midweek when Villa face Chelsea once again, this time in the Carabao Cup.

Villa supporters may want a cup run similar to two seasons ago, but that game remains a better rotation opportunity for a player as prolific as the 29-year-old.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see if Smith settles on a system which can incorporate both of his two main strikers or whether they’ll largely battle it out for one spot in the starting line-up.

Expert claims signing Tolisso is a risk worth taking for West Ham

Signing injury-prone midfielder Corentin Tolisso is a risk worth taking for West Ham United, according to Get French Football News’ Adam White.

David Moyes has been keen to bolster his Hammers squad after leading the east Londoners into the Europa League thanks to registering a club-record Premier League points tally last season.

According to German media outlet Sport 1, Bayern Munich central midfielder Tolisso is among Moyes’ transfer targets ahead of next week’s transfer deadline. The report suggests Italian giants Juventus are also keeping tabs on Tolisso, who won the 2018 World Cup with France.

Bild has claimed Tolisso could be signed for as little as £8.4million, with the 27-year-old’s Bayern contract expiring in less than 12 months.

Tolisso has been made to contend with a host of injury problems in recent years and was restricted to just 24 appearances as Bayern retained the Bundesliga title last season.

But French football expert White believes it is a no-brainer for West Ham to follow up their interest in the midfielder.

He told Football FanCast: “For West Ham, I think it would absolutely be a risk worth taking.

“He is an experienced player regardless of those injuries. I think he would be a fantastic signing, although it is slightly caveated by his fitness.”

Celtic: Josip Juranovic move still on

Celtic’s move for Legia Warsaw’s Josip Juranovic is still on, according to Izak Ante Sucic, a journalist in the player’s homeland.

The Lowdown: Friday report

Polish reporter Tomasz Wlodarczyk claimed on Friday that a move for the £6,100-a-week ace has expired.

He suggested that Celtic had other options in mind to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Juranovic, who has played as a right-midfielder in each of his six starts this season, has 10 caps to his name for Croatia, and it seems as if a move to Glasgow could well be back on.

The Latest: Sucic’s post

Sucic, who reports for Germanijak, took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to provide an update on Juranovic.

He revealed that a potential move to Scotland is still on, however, a transfer may take more time.

Sucic also claimed that Juranovic is personally interested in signing for the Hoops.

The Verdict: McKay onto a winner?

Even though Juranovic has featured as a right-midfielder this season, you’d expect he’d be used as a right-back by Postecoglou.

CEO Dominic McKay could well be onto a winner, especially, with a €3m transfer fee previously being touted.

If a move goes through at that price, Celtic may well be getting Juranovic at the prime of his career at 26 years of age and career-high Transfermarkt valuation.

He’s capable of playing at right-back, centre-back and as a right-midfielder, so his versatility could prove extremely handy, especially with Anthony Ralston in fine form at right-back.

In other news: Leeds keen on another Celtic ace alongside Leo Hjelde.

Fightback started with Kumble – Kirsten

India bounced back from an innings defeat at the SSC in Colombo to level the series by beating Sri Lanka by 170 runs in Galle and Gary Kirsten, the India coach, has said that the process of fighting back “started with Anil Kumble, and filtered down to the rest”.”He [Kumble] is a fantastic leader and fighter,” Kirsten said. “He has a tremendous work ethic and takes Test cricket very seriously. To motivate the team to improve their performance wasn’t really difficult. The great thing about his team is they do hurt a lot when they lose. That’s when one knows these guys take great pride in playing for India.”Kirsten said the big challenge for India would be to keep the momentum going for the deciding Test which begins at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium in Colombo on August 8. “I can sense the team is ready to make history. If every member can perform at a reasonably good level, we would have done enough,” he said.Virender Sehwag was instrumental in India’s win, scoring 201 not out and 50, and he approach oozed aggression. “Every player plays differently,” Kirsten said. “The success of any Test side is how each batsman sticks to his own skill and works on one or two things that he can improve. We certainly don’t say Sehwag plays like this, so the rest of the batsmen need to play like this. He plays like that since he has the skill and ability to play like that.”Kirsten also praised Ishant Sharma, who bowled at pace and extracted sharp bounce on a fourth-day pitch. Ishant dismissed Malinda Warnapura, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan and ended with 3 for 20 in 15 overs . “He is probably our best seamer,” Kirsten said. “I’m very impressed by what he has to offer. He is a young bowler learning how to go about Test cricket. When he is bowling his natural length, he is as good as anyone in the world.”Kirsten said he always believed the team would bounce back after the SSC loss. “They have a proven history of that. We have always believed that when this team is firing on all cylinders, it can match best in the world.” He said his long-term goal was to ensure that India was the best in the world by April 2009.Kirsten, however, will not be available for the third Test after he was granted leave by the BCCI to travel to South Africa to be with his mother, who is critically ill. A press release issued by the board said an interim replacement has not been sought.

Trent Bridge set for new outfield

Nottinghamshire are continuing to develop Trent Bridge so it remains a top international venue © Getty Images

England wrapped up their series against New Zealand at a new-look Trent Bridge, complete with impressive stands and futuristic floodlights, and Nottinghamshire are ensuring they remain one of the premier grounds in the country with more development plans.Work will begin in September to lay a new outfield with improved drainage and sprinkler systems, following a grant of £600,000 from the ECB. The project will help to keep delays through rain to a minimum as surface water will drain quicker.Similar projects have saved huge amounts of time at Lord’s in recent years and Steven Pask, who was in charge of the work at Lord’s along with similar improvements at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge, has won the contact for Trent Bridge’s new outfield.”We are delighted to be undertaking this work to further enhance our playing facilities,” said chief executive Derek Brewer. “After the completion of the new stand and the installation of our permanent floodlights and replay screen, this project is a logical progression.”We are very pleased to be working with Contractor Steven Pask who has forged a great reputation for his work at cricket grounds across the country and restored part of the outfield following the redevelopment work last winter.”Pask said: “The new drainage scheme will allow the outfield to dry very quickly and we will also install points for the hover and sheet covers to discharge to. Because of the drainage, the outfield will require more water and the modern irrigation system will allow for consistent and reliable watering.”The existing turf will be removed at the end of September and the outfield laser levelled to accurate grades. A drainage scheme will be installed across the pitch at three-metre intervals with a new drainage outlet. The existing soil on the outfield will be improved with the addition of sand, before the custom grown turf is laid in the New Year.Trent Bridge doesn’t host an Ashes Test next year, but is one the three host venues for the ICC World Twenty20 and has two ODIs against Australia next September.
