ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-2016Dale Steyn is set for his first Caribbean Premier League stint, having been picked by Jamaica Tallawahs to replace Lasith Malinga, who is recovering from a knee injury.Steyn is the sixth South African signed the CPL for its third season. “There are some outstanding, world-class players signed up across all six teams,” he said, “And I’m looking forward to playing against some of my great friends and team-mates, amongst them Hashim Amla, AB (de Villiers), Faf (du Plessis), David Miller and Morne (Morkel) this summer. It will certainly add a nice bit of spice to the mix.”I have seen CPL grow over the last few years and it is always a great experience playing in the Caribbean. The crowds and the atmosphere are always special and the fans really get behind their team.”Steyn is likely to be in the region from June 3, with South Africa, Australia and West Indies scheduled to play an ODI tri-series.The South Africans involved in the CPL will have a fairly tight turnaround before gearing up for a Test series at home against New Zealand. The CPL ends in late July while the Tests begin on August 13.

Coles happy at home as Kent edge day

ScorecardMatt Coles, seen here last season for Hampshire, ensured the game remained on an even keel•PA Photos

At the start of 2013, two young English cricketers were sent home from a Lions tour to Australia having defied a written warning by continuing to visit late-night bars. In the age of uber-professionalism England were faced with the spectre of two squandered talents. In the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, the first player sent home – one Ben Stokes – has marked himself out as a cricketer who could not only balance the England side but could reconnect the team with the public. Set against a febrile Lords, a crisp day at the outground of Beckenham was rather less glamorous. But there was enough here to suggest that Matt Coles might yet join Stokes in the Test side.

Coles happy on return to Kent

“Being away is a lot tougher than I realised but it was a great experience for me personally – hopefully I can show what I learned in that year away and it’s not gone too badly so far,” Coles said. “I’ve brought back a little bit more of a view to help out the captain and some of the younger bowlers.”
A Test call-up remains some way off, but a Lions recall must surely be in the offing. “I hope there is another chance somewhere round the corner but I’ve got to prove myself here first,” he said, while expressing his satisfaction at Ben Stokes’s recent international exploits.

While Stokes responded magnificently to the ignominy of being sent home from the Lions tour – within a year he had scored a Test century in the cauldron of the WACA – Coles’ riposte was rather less convincing. By the end of the 2013 season he had moved to Hampshire, initially on loan before signing a three-year contract. Just a year in, he was released by mutual consent. Hampshire said that “he has not settled as he, or we would have liked” although, with 41 first-class wickets at 28.41, Coles had still made a significant contribution to promotion. And so Coles returned to Kent. He does not turn 25 until tomorrow, but some thought he had a career and reputation to rebuild. Even in six weeks, he has already gone a long way to doing that. His performance today added to the fine early impression Coles has made returning to his local team. It would be easy to call him a reinvigorated cricketer, and there is some truth in that, but Coles already has first-class pedigree that few of his age can match: 223 wickets at a smidgeon under 29 each.He combines an economical run-up with a strong muscular action, and bowled with vim throughout the day, as hostile with the second new ball in the afternoon gloom as he was with the first in the morning sunshine. Coles’ perseverance might have merited more reward than the two wickets he took in the day – Rory Burns driving at a ball angled across him, and Gary Wilson nicking an away swinger with the second new ball – but he had again marked himself out as Kent’s attack leader. In his sixth Championship game of the season, Coles already has 28 wickets at 24.75 apiece.Coles’ efforts underpinned a commendable day’s work from Kent, who married an unrelenting line outside offstump with intensity in the field. This was not a day of idyllic outground weather, but a distinct chill and intermittent cloud cover provided circumstances for Darren Stevens to yet again thwart Surrey’s strokemakers. His undemonstrative virtues, nibbling the ball late at a pace that would not disturb motorway speed cameras, were enough to claim nine wickets in Kent’s victory at Guildford last season and 7 for 21 at Canterbury four years ago.If this effort was less spectacular, Stevens still had the satisfaction of three wickets in 18 frugal overs. He even had the thrill of removing Kumar Sangakkara who got a leading edge to mid-off and, visibly aghast, readied himself to walk off even before the catch was taken. Jason Roy, who punched straight to mid-on, and Dominic Sibley, who nicked to slip, both followed. At 20 Sibley is a child of the T20 age, but he does not bat like it. Kevin Pietersen’s replacement at No. 4 in Surrey’s batting line-up is another tall right-hander, but where Pietersen’s first instinct is to attack, Sibley’s is to protect his wicket from harm. He took 147 balls over his 41, displaying a resolve that many of his teammates would have benefited from. When Sibley was dismissed, it left Surrey 170 for 7 and facing the prospect of conceding a lead close to three figures. The circumstances demanded calm resolve, and that was just what Gary Wilson and Gareth Batty, attacking spin judiciously and harassing the field, provided. Surrey were even spying a lead when bad light curtailed the day’s final 18 overs leaving spectators to moan “It was a lot darker than this yesterday”.

Mumbai need 445 for victory

After an action-packed opening day which saw heaps of wickets, a semblance of parity was restored at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on the second day of the semi-final between Karnataka and Mumbai

After an action-packed opening day which saw heaps of wickets, a semblance of parity was restored at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on the second day of the semi-final between Karnataka and Mumbai. Nightwatchman Abhimanyu Mithun’s onslaught in the morning session helped Karnataka set Mumbai a challenging fourth-innings target of 445 but the visitors pulled things back as a late collapse gave them a slim chance of a win.Mumbai’s opening batsmen ensured their bowlers’ good work didn’t go to waste, batting solidly for 78 minutes and adding an unbroken 61. They need another 384 runs to upstage the defending champions and enter the final.Nayar discharged

Abhishek Nayar was discharged from the hospital on Thursday afternoon and will play a part in the match only if Mumbai are in with a chance to overhaul the stiff target.
The Mumbai allrounder had suffered a concussion while fielding on the opening day and was kept under observation. Doctors at the Hosmat Hospital in Bangalore have advised “two weeks’ rest” for Nayar. However, the Mumbai team management clarified that Nayar will remain with the team and will pad up if the batsmen excel like they did in the second innings against Delhi last week.
Karnataka had their share of injury woes on the second day as CM Gautam couldn’t take the field after straining a muscle while batting. In his absence, Robin Uthappa kept wicket during Mumbai’s second innings.

Mithun’s aggressive knock in the morning session gave Karnataka’s bowlers a large total to defend. Sent in as a nightwatchman on the first evening, after the home team lost both openers cheaply, Mithun batted as fluently as Robin Uthappa did on the first morning.Mithun, who usually bats in the top order for his club side in the KSCA League, didn’t waste an opportunity to bat up the order. His drives were as precise as a top-order batsman’s – a straight drive off Balwinder Sandhu early in the day was the standout stroke.Once he gained confidence, Mithun punished the Mumbai attack. Shortly after the drinks break, he overhauled his previous first-class best of 63 not out – scored at the same ground against Orissa in November 2010 – with another straight drive off Wilkin Mota. Mithun was set for his maiden first-class century but with the lunch break approaching, he tried an extravagant drive off Thakur only to have his stumps disturbed.Harmeet Singh deceived R Samarth in turn and flight off the fourth ball after the break but despite the quick wickets, Mumbai were soon staring down the barrel.Manish Pandey and Karun Nair, two of the most free-flowing batsmen on the domestic circuit, did not take long to get their eye in and started scoring boundaries at will.Sandhu got Nair to chase a wide one, and Tare didn’t falter behind the wickets. That wicket triggered the mini-collapse and from 222 for 4, Karnataka were reduced to 261 for 9. While Sandhu added Kunal Kapoor’s wicket to his kitty, Karnataka’s poor running between the wickets continued to haunt them as Manish Pandey was run-out after miscommunication with CM Gautam. Harmeet latched on to a full-blooded drive by Vinay Kumar off his own bowling, while Thakur accounted for Gautam – caught by a lunging Herwadakar at gully – to take his season’s wicket tally to 48.For the second day in a row – with the ninth wicket falling just before the scheduled tea break – the session was extended by up to half an hour. S Aravind hung on to let Shreyas Gopal display his prowess with the bat yet again. Gopal was driving the ball fluently but was eventually undone by Thakur’s pace before the break was taken.

Anwar Ali blitz not enough for Sindh Knights

Anwar Ali cracked 67 from 36 deliveries but fell in the last over as Sindh Knights went down by six runs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Fighters in the opening game of the Pentangular One Day Cup in Karachi

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jan-2015Anwar Ali cracked 67 from 36 deliveries but fell in the last over as Sindh Knights went down by six runs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Fighters in the opening game of the Pentangular One Day Cup in Karachi.Fighters appeared to be set for victory when Knights were reduced to 228 for 9 in their chase of 267 in the 48th over. But with an improbable 39 needed from 17 balls, Anwar nearly took Knights home. He came in at No. 7 with the score on 165 and clubbed eight fours and two sixes. Anwar’s charge meant Knights seemed to have the game in the bag with seven required from the last five deliveries but he was stumped off left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar, who was Fighters’ most successful bowler with 3 for 55. Yasir Shah was the most economical with 2 for 37, while captain Junaid Khan took 2 for 58.Asad Shafiq contributed a steady 56 in the chase, while captain Fawad Alam made a quick 62. Both the batsmen were gone before the score reached 200, though, and the lower order caved in before Anwar threatened to stun Fighters. After they chose to bat, Fighters innings was built by half-centuries from Israrullah (62) and Shoaib Malik (70) after which an unbeaten 103-run stand between Adnan Raees (50 not out) and Adil Amin (52 not out) took them to 266 for 4.

'Batting mistakes almost cost us game' – Misbah

Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq has expressed his concern over the performance of his batsmen, after a series of rash shots from them had left his team in a precarious position against Afghanistan

‘Very important win for us’ – Misbah

Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq has expressed his concern over the performance of his batsmen, after a series of rash shots from them had left his team tottering on 117 for 6 against Afghanistan. Speaking after Pakistan’s 72-run win, Misbah said their mistakes could have cost Pakistan the match, had Umar Akmal not rescued them with a century.”I think at one point the match had almost gone out of our hands,” he said. “If Umar Akmal hadn’t played that innings, we would have had a lot of problems. As a batting unit, I think if we continue to repeat the same mistakes, it will be a big problem for us. We have a very important match against India coming up now, so we have to avoid making these kinds of mistakes. We have to take responsibility, especially as a batting unit.”Asked if he was thinking of shuffling Pakistan’s batting order to try and prevent these mistakes, Misbah said he would back his batsmen to pick up their performances.’If Umar Akmal had not played that innings, we would have had a lot of problems’ – Misbah-ul-Haq•AFP

“These things happen,” he said. “If you see the last series, our top three made us win the whole series against Sri Lanka. No. 4, 5 and 6 didn’t even get to bat much in that series. So I think, they are good players and in good form. Yes, two matches have gone and they have struggled, but I hope that in the next matches, which are important ones for us, someone of them will step up and make important runs for us.”Since his debut in 2009, Akmal has been the leading run-scorer in wins at the No. 6 position in ODIs. Asked about his record at that spot, Misbah said he was pleased with Akmal’s success as a finisher.”I think he has been doing well for Pakistan,” Misbah said. “You could say he could have done slightly better than this, but from the last year and a half, I think he’s really doing well at that number, finishing games for Pakistan and scoring runs at crucial stages. I’ve been really happy, especially with the way he played today. I think that’s what we want him to do, to finish games for Pakistan.”Misbah praised Afghanistan’s bowling and fielding, when asked if the Associate team had presented Pakistan a tougher challenge than he had expected.”Afghanistan is always like that,” he said. “They have a decent bowling attack and a very good fielding side, and I think they proved it today. They bowled very good lines and they were very disciplined. Their fielding was supporting them. I think they are an improving side and they can really put you under pressure on a given day.”

O provável time deve ter: Weverton; Marcos Rocha, Antonio Carlos, Edu Dracena e Diogo Barbosa; Thiago Santos, Moisés e Ricardo Goulart; Hyoran, Carlos Eduardo e Arthur Cabral. Resta saber se o Verdão estará em plena forma ou irá sentir a falta de ritmo de jogo.

Toby Radford named Glamorgan coach

Toby Radford, the West Indies assistant coach and former Middlesex and Sussex batsman, has been named as Glamorgan’s new head coach

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2013Toby Radford, the West Indies assistant coach and former Middlesex and Sussex batsman, has been named as Glamorgan’s new head coach.Radford, 41, who was born in Wales and previously coached Middlesex, will take over from Matthew Mott following a season where Glamorgan reached the final of the YB40. He will join Hugh Morris, the outgoing managing director of England cricket who has returned to his former county as chief executive, as part of a new management team at Glamorgan and is set to begin on November 1.Radford said: “It was great to see the team reaching a Lord’s final at the end of the season, and I believe we have a wonderful opportunity of building on this success and developing a team of which the Welsh nation can be proud.””I am honoured to have been offered this position and look forward to working with chief executive and director of cricket Hugh Morris, and the playing and coaching staff of Glamorgan in bringing success back to the county I supported as a youngster.”Following a playing career that was limited to 14 first-class matches, Radford move into coaching firstly with Berkshire and then with the Middlesex Academy before taking temporary charge of the first team in 2007 when Richard Pybus quit midway through the season. He was then appointed on a full-time basis in 2008, the summer Middlesex won the Twenty20 Cup.In 2010, Radford moved to the Caribbean to take up a post at the newly formed High Performance Centre in Barbados from where he became involved with the main West Indies squad firstly as a batting coach and then Ottis Gibson’s assistant.Gibson, himself, had been linked with the Glamorgan role but the WICB made it clear last week that they had not been aware of interest.Morris, who takes up his Glamorgan role in January, said: “In recent years Toby has built a strong reputation as one of the most talented young cricket coaches in England and Wales, and his experience of managing and developing some world class cricketers will be a great asset to our club. He is a proud Welshman and is looking forward to working with our current players and nurturing local talent for the future.”Glamorgan’s run in the YB40, which saw them secure their first Lord’s final since 2000, was the high point of their season. Elsewhere, they finished second bottom in Division Two of the Championship and failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the FLt20.Some young players showed promise in 2013 notably offspinner Andrew Salter in the Lord’s final and pace bowler Michael Reed who will be involved with the England development programme over the winter.
