Poulton, Cameron guide Australia to finals

Australia 147 for 4 (Poulton 61, Cameron 47, Bates 2-17) beat New Zealand 146 for 6 (Perry 50*, Sthalekar 2-33) by six wickets

Leah Poulton and Jess Cameron powered Australia into the finals of the NatWest Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series, their 82-run partnership for the second wicket setting up a six-wicket win after New Zealand had set a competitive 146 for 6. Cameron fell just short of her fifty but Poulton batted on, adding a further 47 with Shelley Nitschke and reaching 61 before she was dismissed with victory in sight.Medium pacer Lea Tahuhu appeared to give her team a chance when she bowled Meg Lanning for single figures, but Poulton and Cameron’s partnership helped put Australia on top. Bates threatened to spark a late fightback, trapping Cameron and Alex Blackwell in front of their stumps with consecutive deliveries to put herself on a hat-trick, but Poulton and Nitschke locked the game down with their aggressive batting.New Zealand had got off to a similarly enterprising start with the bat after Aimee Watkins had won the toss and opted to set a target, Watkins herself leading the way with a 22-ball 29 that included four fours and a six.She put on an opening stand of 52 with Bates before a flurry of wickets dented the middle order, and New Zealand were thankful for the in-form Liz Perry’s unbeaten fifty, which ensured they set a defendable total. That was not to be, however, and Australia will now meet a rampant England in the tournament final at the Rose Bowl on Monday.”The ground had a fast outfield and the wicket was good,” said Watkins. “We thought that we had enough. But obviously it wasn’t. I think it was a par score on that pitch. But Australia took the opportunities that came their way and put away the bad balls. They chased down the target well.”Watkins also praised Perry for her second successive knock under pressure. “It was a good back-up performance from Liz. She came up with another good performance for us today. I hope that continues tomorrow in the play-off and then onto the 50-over competition.””It was a good ground to chase down scores,” said Player of the Match Poulton. “The pitch was good for batting. The target was gettable. We had some clear plans on how many runs need to be scored in every period of the match. I am glad the plans we had came good as we reached all targets set for the game.”Poulton recalled a similar chase against England at the same ground previously and said the batting derived confidence from that match. “We had played England here and chased down 150 then. So we knew that 146 was a gettable target. We thought 140 to 150 was a par score and Kiwis did well in getting there. But we were always confident going into the chase.”Jess and I had a good partnership. She was striking the ball well and I quite liked to play second fiddle. We have batting all the way down, it was nice to be able to play my game. It was good to have a win in the lead-up to the final. We are confident about our chances. We have played England quite often and know what to expect of them. They are also a good, strong unit and as confident as us. So it will be a good contest.”

West Ham: Insider shares major Bowen contract update

West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh have now shared a major in-house update involving star winger Jarrod Bowen.

The Lowdown: Irons eye new deal?

The 25-year-old has been one of manager David Moyes’ players of the 2021/2022 Premier League season, prompting the club and owners GSB to plan a possible new deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-5/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Football Insider recently claimed that Bowen is set be offered a ‘huge’ fresh contract in east London as West Ham look to secure their star to fresh terms, potentially to fend off his growing list of admirers.

While their club ‘source’ believes the Hammers are planning to open negotiations ‘within weeks’, club insider C&H have now shared a major update to the contrary.

The Latest: C&H share major in-house Bowen update…

The outlet, sharing information from their own ‘key’ source, say that ‘discussions will start’ over a fresh contract for Bowen but Moyes’ side have set a different date.

West Ham have apparently ‘decided’ to hold ‘new talks’ with their star man’s representatives in September as the Irons now map out a crunch time for discussions.

Their source explained:

“He’s got three years to go. In September, once this window is over, discussions will start with his agent for a new deal. Our priority is that all the short term energy goes into signing new players.”

The Verdict: Right move?

While strengthening their position over Bowen comes as important, backing Moyes in the next transfer window to maintain their meteoric rise is surely a priority also.

Averaging the highest match rating domestically out of any West Ham man, standing out as their most valuable player going forward with 22 goals and assists combined (WhoScored), the Englishman could prove deadlier still playing alongside a star striker.

The London Stadium side must finally end their long search for a centre-forward and we believe this should stand out as their first and foremost priority this summer – especially since Michail Antonio remains their only natural, senior option in the position.

Man City vs Wolves news: Pep could be eyeing Ruben Neves

Transfer insider Dean Jones has provided some fresh news involving highly sought after Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves, name-checking Manchester City as a possible suitor ahead of the meeting tonight.

The lowdown: Wanted man

Signed for a then Championship record £15.8million from FC Porto in 2017 (BBC), the Portuguese ace has been on an upwards trajectory ever since arriving at Molineux.

An integral part of the Wanderers side that earned promotion and subsequently became established in the Premier League, the 25-year-old has been the subject of increased speculation in recent weeks as Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona are all indexed to Neves.

Seemingly increasingly likely to move on this summer, with reports earlier this week even saying he’s ready to quit and force through a move to Catalonia, one reputable journalist has suggested another big hitter could be keen on the playmaker’s services…

The latest: Jones cites Man City

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones has suggested that title-challengers Manchester City could feasibly join the race to land the 26-cap Portugal star.

The journalist said: “He is perfectly capable of playing at any of the top clubs in the European positions. So, it’s just really a case of who’s got an available spot in the team that opens up for him to play. To be honest, it could even be Man City, I wouldn’t rule that out.”

If Pep Guardiola has his eye on a move for the Portugal star, he will certainly be keeping an eye out when the teams meet tonight (Wednesday, May 11).

The verdict: Crucial summer ahead

Whilst Wolves boss Bruno Lage will be desperate to keep Neves at the club, it appears inevitable that the hierarchy will need to fend off major interest over the coming months.

Described as ‘amazing’ by Wanderers’ goalkeeper Jose Sa following a goalscoring display against Brentford, the creative midfield maestro has scored four times and provided two assists in 30 Premier League outings this season and will be crucial if the club are going to progress to the next level.

Under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), the club are in no rush to sell and can therefore hold out for maximum value should the desire from the player to compete in the Champions League prove impossible to ignore.

If there is indeed interest from Guardiola and Manchester City, Neves has the ideal stage in which to showcase his skills when the two sides meet at Molineux.

Sunderland must secure Doyle permanently

Sunderland have the chance to finally make their way into the Championship and out of League One as the play-offs are set to begin in the coming days.

Having played 46 games in the league so far this season, the Black Cats have won 24, drawn 12 and lost ten, scoring 79 goals and conceding 53 in the process.

One player that has been a particularly prominent figure for the Wearside club this season is defender Callum Doyle.

Since arriving at the Stadium of Light back in the previous summer transfer window on loan from Manchester City’s U23 side, the centre-back has made 41 appearances across all competitions.

After only missing two league games between the start of the season and March, the 18-year-old has only made three appearances since then.

Despite this lack of regular action in recent weeks, the teenager has still shown what a capable player he is at such a young age and why the club should try and sign him on a permanent deal in the summer.

With the highest number of interceptions (48) to his name in the squad, Doyle also has the second-highest number of tackles (40) under his belt behind Carl Winchester (63).

This shows just how much of a talented defender the £3.4k-per-week gem is off the ball.

In terms of his work on the ball, the youngster has also shown his effectiveness on the pitch by racking up a higher average of passes per game (47.1) than any other Sunderland player to start more than eight league games.

Back in August, the Englishman was on the end of some high praise from journalist James Copley who said that “if you could build the perfect centre-back in a laboratory, the end result would look a lot like Callum Doyle.”

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that bringing the City youth prospect has been a solid move from the Black Cats.

Moving forward, with the summer transfer window on the horizon, whether the club end up moving into the Championship or staying in League One, they should definitely make an approach to the Premier League club to try and see if they would be willing to allow Doyle to leave on a permanent basis and continue his journey with the Black Cats.

Should the Wearside club secure his signature on a permanent deal in the summer, it would surely blow fans at the Stadium of Light away when you consider his performances and enormous potential in the game.

Palace could sell Mateta this summer

Crystal Palace may decide to sell Jean-Philippe Mateta during the summer transfer window despite only signing him in January, according to The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam.

The lowdown

Palace initially signed Mateta on an 18-month loan deal from Bundesliga outfit Mainz in January 2021 and agreed to make the deal permanent earlier this year.

The loan had included a purchase option of €15m (£12.4m), but Mainz showed a willingness to accept a reduced fee. The Frenchman penned a four-and-a-half-year contract worth £53,400 per week.

Having only started one game this season before Boxing Day, Mateta is now enjoying a run of five starts in the last 11 Premier League matches (via Transfermarkt). He has also scored in two of his last three league games, finding the net in victories over Wolves and Watford.

The latest

Woosnam was asked by a Palace supporter in the comments of an article for The Athletic whether he had heard ‘whispers’ about the Eagles cashing in on Mateta.

The journalist duly replied: “It’s a possibility David. I think the signing of him permanently was an opportunistic one. They managed to negotiate a lower price than previously agreed, he’s in good form, if he’s not the answer when they review in the summer they can sell him, likely for a profit given his upturn in form, and bring someone in who they see as more suitable. However, it may be that they determine he’s worth keeping.”

The verdict

If Mateta is moved on by Palace, it could be good news for Odsonne Edouard – Carlton Palmer said last week that the summer signing from Celtic ‘will be disappointed’ by his recent lack of game-time at Selhurst Park.

While Mateta has moved up the pecking order under Vieira, his compatriot has played just one minute of football over the course of the last four league matches, and his job may now be to convince Vieira to show more faith in him rather than replacing Mateta with an expensive new recruit, if the latter does indeed exit the south London club.

Afghan coach says he used India example to inspire team

Afghanistan coach Rashid Latif has said he inspired his team for the Asian Games final against Bangladesh by narrating how underdogs India beat the all-conquering West Indies to win the 1983 World Cup final

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Nov-2010Afghanistan coach Rashid Latif has said he inspired his team for the Asian Games final against Bangladesh by narrating how underdogs India beat the all-conquering West Indies to win the 1983 World Cup. “The Indians were not as fit as their rivals, nor was their skill superior to the West Indies, yet on that day they played better and won,” Latif told . “My team here was the fittest and they had good skills too, but I warned the boys not to take Bangladesh lightly.”Having stunned favourites Pakistan in the semi-final yesterday, Afghanistan proved worthy opponents against Bangladesh, taking the final to the last over before losing by five wickets.Latif, the former Pakistan wicketkeeper, said Afghanistan’s ultimate aim was to play Test cricket. “The result proved me right, but I am happy we are on the right path. We will improve further if we play the big teams regularly. The aim is to be a Test nation soon and play against the best. I want to bring youngsters into the game so the sport continues to grow in Afghanistan.”Afghanistan have made rapid strides, rising through the ranks from the lower divisions of the World Cricket League. They played in the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean earlier this year and narrowly missed qualifying for the 2011 World Cup.Mohammad Nabi, the Afghanistan captain, said passion for the game kept the players going. “The war has been going on for three decades, but we have been playing cricket there for the last 10 years despite the lack of proper facilities or grounds. Cricket has caught on back home. More people are playing the game or following it on radio and TV.”Nabi was disappointed to lose the final, but said the silver medal had buoyed his team for the five-day Intercontinental Cup final against Scotland in Dubai from December 2. “We want to play as much as possible, wherever possible. The aim is to join the big league.”Afghanistan received backing from Bangladesh, who won their country’s first ever Asian Games gold medal. “We are celebrating, but I hope Afghanistan will celebrate too because they deserve the silver medal,” Imran Sarwar, the Bangladesh coach, said. “They are a very good side and I am sure they will become a top team in the near future. Their rise has been remarkable.”This was not an easy win at all. We expected them to make around 100 or 110, but they went to 118 and then kept us under pressure till the end.”

West Ham plotting Lucas Ocampos swoop

West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Sevilla winger Lucas Ocampos this summer as David Moyes plans to strengthen his squad during the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the latest?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Hammers – alongside Premier League rivals Wolves – are keen to bring the 27-year-old to England.

The Argentine has two years left on his contract with the La Liga outfit and played the entire first leg of the two teams’ Europa League round of 16 tie last month, missing the trip to the London Stadium.

Valued by Transfermarkt at £27m, Ocampos has scored nine goals and registered four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions this season and could be an intriguing addition to the Irons’ squad.

Moyes should sign Ocampos

It’s no secret that, despite another successful season, West Ham need a reshape of their playing personnel this summer. The average age of Moyes’ squad is 28.8 and consists of just 24 players, a low tally considering that they’ve played in four different competitions this term.

Reinforcements in every position are likely to be needed, including in the wide attacking positions.

Although at 27 he wouldn’t bring the average squad age down considerably, Ocampos is at a prime age where he can still improve whilst already having huge experience, something which could potentially shift out the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals or Andriy Yarmolenko.

Most importantly, though, he’s certainly an improvement on some of the Hammers’ current options.

Bowen is arguably an exception, with the Englishman currently West Ham’s top scorer this season with 14 goals. However, the 25-year-old is the only Irons winger who has scored more than Ocampos in 2021/22, with Benrahma scoring nine and Pablo Fornals six, and the ex-Hull City star has been linked with a possible move to Newcastle in recent days.

Moreover, Yarmolenko is expected to depart this summer upon the expiration of his contract, further highlighting the necessity of a winger being on West Ham’s wishlist this summer.

Described as “electric” by journalist Fede Praml, the tricky Sevilla winger currently averages 1.9 shots per game whilst enjoying an 83% passing accuracy and 40% dribbling success. The 27-year-old’s defensive contribution is satisfactory too, with 1.4 tackles and 0.6 clearances per match.

It may take time for the Argentine to adapt to the Premier League and West Ham’s style of play if he moves to east London, but it is crucial that the Hammers finish the next transfer window with a bigger squad than what Moyes current has, especially if they succeed in qualifying for Europe and if Bowen is tempted to Tyneside.

Source reveals MUFC progress with Ten Hag

Manchester United have been reportedly getting closer to sealing the deal with Erik ten Hag to become the next manager to take on the tough challenge at Old Trafford, and a source has revealed more details about the current progress at the club.

What’s the word?

Stretty News have claimed that a close senior source at Manchester United has revealed that the next meeting between the directors of the club and representatives of Ten Hag are due to take place later this week in London.

The report also claimed that they now understand that United’s search has been whittled down to just two candidates – Ten Hag and Paris Saint Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Great news!

The manager situation at United has been an ongoing issue all season, so it will be a relief to fans, the squad and the owners that it appears close to being settled, with one of the ideal targets set to become the new manager at Old Trafford.

Everyone involved in the club will be hoping that this is the last phase of transition they will face after going through four permanent and three interim managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired from management and left United in 2013, with a rollercoaster ride along the way and a lengthy trophy drought set to enter a sixth year.

Since Fergie’s departure, the Red Devils have won just three trophies in almost nine years, with their most recent success in the EFL Cup and Europa League with Jose Mourinho back in 2017. They have not lifted a trophy since then despite getting close to winning the Europa League again last year, falling at the last hurdle in a penalty shoot-out against Villareal in Gdansk.

Now in their longest trophy drought since 1989, United will be hoping that the appointment of Ten Hag or Pochettino will bring the winning ways back to Old Trafford, and that real progress will finally be made at the club following Fergie’s exit nine years ago.

For now, Ralf Rangnick must focus on catching up with Arsenal and Tottenham in the pursuit of a top four finish to secure Champions League football with their new manager next season. As they lie three points behind both London clubs, though, the interim coach will need the others to drop points for the Red Devils to get back into Europe’s premier club competition, and that’s without suffering any more setbacks of their own.
