Draw looms after Younis triple-century

How they were out

Younis Khan took full advantage of a dead pitch at the National Stadium, scoring his maiden triple-century – the third by a Pakistan batsman – to push his side to safety and the match towards a draw. After four bat-dominated days, the only interest now left in the contest is whether the new Pakistan captain can break Brian Lara’s Test record of 400.It was in line with Younis’ character that he brought up the landmark with a reverse-sweep. The cap was off, was performed and a million-dollar smile lit up his sunny face. Fifty-two years earlier, Hanif Mohammad hit Pakistan’s highest Test score, a mammoth 337 against West Indies that took three days in making. The story goes that a Bajan boy, watching it from a palm tree, fell down and upon recovering consciousness in the hospital, wondered: Is Hanif still batting? He still was. Younis might well have elicited a similar reaction today. He batted on for 545 balls, and is not yet finished.”I have never seen a pitch here where even on the fourth day not a single ball has done anything to trouble the batsmen,” Waqar Younis said on air. Younis took full toll in the middle. He had worked out the pitch, the match situation and what he needed to do. Against Muttiah Muralitharan he defended a lot and nudged offbreaks to the on side before suddenly unfurling a slog-sweep. Occasionally, he charged down the track to lift over the infield. And as ever a Younis knock is incomplete without those reverse-sweeps. Against Ajantha Mendis, he rarely got his pad in way and nudged and dabbed his way without any fuss. It worked like a treat. When the mood seized him, he went for the big shot down the ground. The game lapsed into bit of a farce in the last session. Mahela Jayawardene gave Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara and himself some overs. It got weirder when Jayawardene picked up the wicket of Faisal Iqbal. Younis helped himself to easy boundaries in that phase and moved from 243 to his triple-hundred.Sri Lanka, though, persevered gamely till the tea break. Jayawardene used Chaminda Vaas and Mendis in an 18-over spell in the morning and both bowlers kept it tight, giving away only 37 runs. With the wicketkeeper standing up to the stumps and a lone wide slip in place, Vaas kept varying his pace and bowled quite a few offcutters. The batsmen remained cautious but Vaas succeeded in creating a couple of chances with his persistence. On one occasion, Younis edged an attempted cover drive but it flew between keeper and slip. The second time Vaas slipped one just down leg, beating Misbah’s flick but Prasanna Jayawardene could not collect cleanly to complete the stumping.Mendis toiled hard, mixing his deliveries well, using the offbreak as his stock ball and varying the pace. The batsmen generally played him with caution but did strike a few big hits. Younis reprised yesterday’s shot – a smooth clean swing to the straight boundary – and Misbah hit the first six of the match when he cleared long-on.In the second session, Jayawardene used the combination of Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando, who had removed Misbah with an in-cutter just before lunch. Muralitharan could not create any pace off the track and it was left to Fernando to try posing a few problems to the batsmen. He bowled his heart out in what was his best spell of the match. He got the ball to reverse and was accurate throughout. He had a very close shout for lbw against Faisal with a ball that curved in but the umpire wasn’t convinced. He then rapped Younis with a similar delivery but this one was missing leg stump. Mendis returned to trouble Faisal with his carrom balls but the batsmen survived to score some easy runs against the lesser bowlers. The batsmen were intent on playing out time and managed to do just that. It might have made the cricket boring but the match situation left them with no other option. However, the bigger question still remains: When you are playing Test cricket at home after 16 months, and with Test-match attendance falling rapidly, was this dead pitch the best you could come up with? The authorities need to do a sincere post-mortem.

Pritchard let Sunderland down vs Blackpool

Sunderland won their fifth competitive match of the season on Tuesday night as they beat Championship side Blackpool 3-2 in the second round of the League Cup.

Lee Johnson’s side were able to overcome going 1-0 down inside the opening 10 minutes to win 3-2, preventing penalties and heading through to the third round of the competition.

Aiden O’Brien scored a superb hat-trick to win the match for Sunderland, having also scored in the first round against Port Vale. The forward caught the eye with his performance and deserves praise for his showing, but one player for Sunderland struggled in the match.

Alex Pritchard lined up in the number 10 position for the Black Cats and failed to put in a display that may lead to some doubts about whether he is capable of mixing it against a Championship opposition. He received the lowest SofaScore rating on the pitch (6.4) for the club, despite picking up an assist for one of O’Brien’s goals – with his corner falling kindly to the attacker in the box to slot in one of his three strikes.

In 73 minutes on the field, Pritchard only managed 36 touches of the ball. Anthony Patterson in goal, meanwhile, had 46 touches, which suggests that the ex-Huddersfield man did not get into the game as much as he should have in midfield. A team’s creative number 10 should be constantly getting on the ball and looking to make things happen, but he was not able to do that against Blackpool.

Although he registered an assist, his corner was the only chance he created in the match and he also missed one big chance to score – showing that his end product was poor, whilst his retention of the ball was not much better. He lost possession 10 times from 36 touches and won one of his four duels. He was not strong enough to retain the ball under pressure and Sunderland were, perhaps, fortunate in the end that his disaster display did not cost them the result.

He let Johnson down with his performance, but it is still early days for the Englishman at the Stadium of Light. Pritchard has plenty of time left this season to get back to his best and show that he can be a difference-maker at League One level, and potentially in the Championship if they can secure promotion to the second tier.

Symonds determined to fight back

Tim Nielsen says Andrew Symonds’ frame of mind in recent months has been a concern © AFP

Andrew Symonds is committed to forcing his way back into the Australia team but whether that is possible for October’s tour of India is uncertain, according to his agent Matt Fearon. Symonds was thrown out of the squad in Darwin after missing a team meeting because he went fishing. It was only a misdemeanour but it was the last straw for a team leadership group that was already concerned about Symonds’ dedication and frame of mind following several other incidents. Symonds flew home to Brisbane while his colleagues took on Bangladesh on Saturday and he said in a statement on Sunday that he had taken on board his team-mates’ concerns.”I have had some time to reflect on the events that took place in Darwin,” Symonds said. “I would like to say thanks for the many messages of support that I have received over the past day or so. I appreciate your best wishes. I’ve been asked to think about what is important to me and I will take this time to do that.”Fearon told Cricinfo the allrounder was pondering his attitude and his future. “Andrew’s going to take some time to reflect on what’s happened,” Fearon said. “He’s still committed to playing cricket at the highest level. How he goes about doing that and how it plays out I don’t know. Whether it means India I don’t know.”It has been an eventful year for Symonds, who among other things was at the centre of a racism row with India’s Harbhajan Singh in January. Although his Australia team-mates would love to have him on board for the upcoming Test tour, they know his value to the team is diminished if he is not focused.”He’s had success there and is a very good player of spin and that is important,” Michael Hussey told AAP. “He’s not going to be built up with pressure with the spinners where it’s dot ball after dot ball, which is going to be important when we get to India.”[On Saturday] I thought, gee it would be great to have Symo here to come in and smack a few to put the pressure back on the Bangladeshi bowlers a bit. But it’s the way it is. Maybe if Andrew Symonds was playing and he’s not 100% committed he’s not going to be able to give his best, so we want someone to come in and give their best.”Paul Marsh, the chief executive of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, said the latest incident was unexpected but the ACA would do everything it could to get him back into the Australia team. “It was a surprise,” Marsh said, “but there were issues last summer that have been well documented.”Our role is obviously we’re here to support Andrew. We’ve been in discussion with his manager and look to put in place the best possible support for him.”Australia maintain that a break from the game is in Symonds’ best interests as well as for the good of the team, although nobody knows how long his lay-off will be. His attitude over the past few months has troubled the squad’s senior figures and the coach Tim Nielsen said the fishing expedition was simply a trigger point.”They [usually] don’t miss a thing and they are always early and presented as well as they possibly can,” Nielsen said. “When somebody hasn’t got the information that they need or hasn’t turned up on time it’s usually due to the fact they’re away from us and the group a little bit, mentally. That always raises concerns.”While Cricket Australia said it would do whatever it could to help Symonds, the unusual situation means it is not clear what he must do to prove his commitment. “There’s no prescribed, exact process for these sorts of things,” Marsh said. “We just need to get to the bottom of things and work out what’s the best way to move forward.”

Romano: West Ham to revisit Lingard

West Ham United are expected to revisit their Jesse Lingard interest before the end of the transfer window later this month…

What’s the word?

That’s according to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who delivered a fresh update on the 28-year-old’s situation at Old Trafford with less than two weeks to go until Deadline Day.

Manchester United are expected to offload some of their fringe players if they are to make any further additions and Lingard is one player that could garner a substantial fee.

Speaking to Mark Goldbridge on ‘The United Stand’ YouTube channel, he said:

“Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] is talking in a positive way about him, always. I’m told that he has fantastic professionalism, he’s training so well. He’s changed his mentality after his loan spell with West Ham. Manchester United are really happy with him.

“But West Ham will try again. It’s always been expected. We’ve said many times that in the last [few] weeks of the window West Ham will be back for Jesse Lingard. They are still waiting to decide on this position but they are still keen on Jesse Lingard. And he’s always been West Ham or Manchester United for him.

“Now they need to decide and if Manchester United will sell Jesse Lingard, then I think they [United] have an opportunity to do something else in the market. I would keep an eye on this kind of situation.”

One last attempt?

It’s no secret that the Hammers would love to see Lingard return to the London Stadium after he made a remarkable impact during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

The England international provided David Moyes and his side with nine goals and five assists in just 16 appearances, via Transfermarkt, to help steer them into the Europa League.

After the final game of the season, the Scotsman revealed his desire to keep hold of Lingard. He said to reporters at full-time:

“I hope Jesse’s here, we’d like to keep him, he’s done an exceptional job for us but there’s no guarantees, he’s not our player. But I hope Jesse realises we’ve been good for him as well, and that he joined a club on the up.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-much-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

This week, Moyes’ assistant Stuart Pearce stoked the fire even more by revealing that the club does indeed want to re-sign Lingard before August 31st. He told talkSPORT:

“We would like him to come and join us. That has been an open secret. He was wonderful last year. The ball is in Manchester United’s court. He is contracted to them. We would like him with us, there is no doubt about that. He’s a special lad and was very good around the players – the players really like him.”

The Hammers’ faithful are just as keen to see Lingard make a stunning return to East London, too.

This latest update from Romano should, therefore, provide some encouragement. There’s a very good chance that West Ham will submit an offer for the English playmaker in the near future, and if the Red Devils want to make further additions themselves, then they’ll have to let Lingard leave.

The £19.8m-rated dynamo must be made the Irons’ second signing of the summer – it’s now on GSB to submit an offer that the Old Trafford club cannot refuse.

Michael Ball doubts Glen Kamara stay at Rangers

Former Rangers player Michael Ball is hopeful that Glen Kamara does stay at Rangers this summer, but thinks it’s very doubtful.

The 25-year-old central midfielder was an integral part of the Rangers team that won the Scottish Premiership last season, featuring on 28 occasions.

After successful season, Kamara was then picked in the Finland Euro 2020 squad, where he played every minute of his nations three group matches.

The midfielder has been linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer, with GiveMeSport revealing that Arsenal remain interested in signing Kamara.

Despite the rumours, Michael Ball is hopeful that Kamara chooses to stay with Rangers but thinks it’s doubtful, telling Football FanCast: “It’s like every transfer you’ve got to be careful, tick every box that you feel personally is going to help yourself develop. He might feel another year at Rangers might help him develop a bit more.

“So, fingers crossed he does stay at Rangers, but I think it’s very, very doubtful with the rumours that we’re listening to right now.”

Kamara’s current contract runs until May 2023, with the Daily Mail reporting that Rangers are looking for in excess of £10million for the midfielder. They also reported that both Premier League newcomers Brentford and Watford were interested in securing the signature of Kamara.

After leading Rangers to Scottish Premiership glory and having a good run in the Europa League last season, manager Steven Gerrard will be hoping to keep hold of his prized assets and build on that success this season.

Expert compares Arsenal target Aouar to World Cup winner

Get French Football News’ Adam White has tipped Arsenal target Houssem Aouar to excite Gunners fans and even compared the creative midfielder to a World Cup winner.

Mikel Arteta’s side are thought to be edging closer to concluding the transfer of Lyon’s Aouar.

Ligue One expert White feels the 23-year-old would shine at the Emirates Stadium and sees similarities with Barcelona and Spain legend Andres Iniesta.

Arsenal have reignited their interest despite Aouar turning the Gunners down last year.

Lyon have reportedly revealed they will accept a fee in the region of £25million this summer, which is far less than their asking price 12 months ago.

Although north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the situation, it appears Arsenal are in the driving seat to acquire the Frenchman’s services.

Aouar made 33 Lyon appearances last season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists.

White feels Aouar would be a hit at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I’m a big fan of Aouar. I’ve often likened him to Andres Iniesta, which is obviously a big shout because, for me, he is one of the greatest players of all-time.

“I don’t necessarily mean in quality but in style. He has silky movement and drifts in midfield to pick passes. At his best, he is absolutely brilliant to watch and he can play anywhere in midfield.

“He’s great on the ball and technically outstanding. His vision is brilliant. He’s a huge talent.”
