Mal estar no vestiário?

Sky Sports drop Spurs update on Joe Rodon

Antonio Conte could be on the verge of making one of his first mistakes at Tottenham Hotspur after a recent claim emerged about central defender Joe Rodon.

What’s the word?

The 24-year-old Wales international has barely featured under the Italian since his arrival last month, featuring for only 54 minutes against NS Mura in the Europa Conference League, in what was just his fourth start of the season overall.

He was signed from Swansea City a year ago for around £11m and could now look to force an exit this January, in a bid to earn some more minutes on the pitch.

According to Football Insider, the 6 foot 4 colossus is “100 per cent” keen to secure an exit next month. Meanwhile, Spurs are seemingly on the lookout for defensive reinforcements, having been linked to the likes of Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni, as well as AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli.

Now, Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, who is generally clued up on things behind the scenes at Hotspur Way, has delivered his verdict to GIVEMESPORT. He said:

“As it stands right now, I just get this feeling that Antonio Conte doesn’t think he’s at the level Tottenham need.”

Bad call?

This is a worrying claim as it almost certainly highlights the fact that the 52-year-old isn’t a fan of the Jose Mourinho addition, not at least because of his one start under him and that lasted less than an hour.

It is interesting that Conte will not turn to him despite their mini injury crisis that has seen star centre-back Cristian Romero ruled out for a couple of months heading into the start of 2022.

Rodon features regularly for his country and excelled at Euro 2020 alongside fellow Lilywhites defender Ben Davies, who the Italian has deployed in his back three regularly.

Indeed, the Welshman has played nearly as many times for Rob Page’s Dragons (12) as he has Spurs (16) in 2021.

But it’s a little perplexing as he clearly has a lot to offer and is a more natural centre-back than his compatriot and perhaps an even more reliable option than someone like Davinson Sanchez, who has been regularly lambasted as a “liability” during his time in N17.

Valued at £18m by CIES Football Observatory, Rodon has delivered fine performances for Wales, leading to praise such as “flawless” and him being a “special player” by journalist Ian Mitchelmore.

Meanwhile, in the past, he has been likened to two Premier League greats by Sky Sports’ Andy Hinchcliffe. “You look at Rio Ferdinand and John Terry and there are elements of both in Rodon’s game,” he claimed.

He’s also a player that the Lilywhites faithful have also been very keen to see and some feel that he should be in the starting XI more often, especially with Romero out injured – as seen in reactions relayed by This is Futbol earlier this month, once after the aforementioned Football Insider report and again after he was snubbed from a matchday squad.

They will not be thrilled by this latest update, so with the writing seemingly on the wall for Rodon, Conte could well be about to drop his biggest blunder yet in north London.

Quem for jogar vai estar preparado.

Captain Simpson blasts Queensland to top of table

A brutal late partnership between Craig Philipson and Chris Simpson set up a 20-run victory for Queensland at the MCG, where Victoria suffered their first loss of the FR Cup season

A brutal late partnership between Craig Philipson and Chris Simpson set up a 20-run victory for Queensland at the MCG, where Victoria suffered their first loss of the FR Cup season. Philipson and Simpson added an unbeaten 123 in the final 11.4 overs to push the Bulls to 5 for 261 after Victoria had stifled the Queensland top order. It proved the decisive period in the match and after Cameron White was run out for 50 in the chase, the Bulls were in the box seat. Matthew Wade fought hard with his maiden half-century and his 67 from 62 balls kept Victoria in the game, but Nathan Rimmington and Ben Laughlin ensured the Bushrangers were dismissed with eight balls to spare. The run-out of White was a key moment as he and Wade were building a solid partnership. It came thanks to a brilliantly flat and quick throw from the bowler Rimmington, who hurled down the stumps at the striker’s end as the batsmen attempted a third after Rimmington received the ball from Wade Townsend at deep cover.Queensland were sharp in the field and no doubt carried some momentum onto the ground after the bruising efforts of Simpson and Philipson. The Bulls had ground their way to 5 for 138 in the 39th over when the pair came together and it was the captain Simpson, the Man of the Match, who led the fightback with 61 not out from 34 balls.Remarkably, it was his first half-century in a 48-match one-day career, and it featured two sixes in the 50th over when White strangely decided to have Bryce McGain bowl out the final stages. Philipson, who had been scratchy early, followed his captain’s lead and finished unbeaten on 85 from 79 deliveries. It gave Queensland a terrific finish to an innings that had started badly – the debutant James Pattinson struck in the first over when James Hopes, returning from a lingering hamstring injury, edged an outswinger to slip. The victory confirmed Queensland’s place at the top of the FR Cup table with five wins from six games.

Wolves fans slam Rayan Ait-Nouri v Burnley

Many Wolves fans have been slamming the performance of Rayan Ait-Nouri in their 0-0 draw at home to Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

The left wing-back was pretty solid defensively, helping his team to keep a clean sheet at Molineux, but a number of supporters grew frustrated with his end product in the attacking third of the pitch.

Ait-Nouri made no key passes or accurate long balls and also misplaced eight of his crosses, as he was guilty of losing possession of the ball on 30 separate occasions on the night, by far the most out of any player on both teams (SofaScore).

Based on those numbers, he will need to improve the attacking side of his game if Bruno Lage’s team are to pose more of a threat going forward.

Wolves fans slam Ait-Nouri

These Wolves supporters slammed the 20-year-old’s performance on Twitter, with one going as far as to claim that he was ‘awful’ against the Clarets:

Villa fans react to Shakespeare’s departure

Aston Villa assistant manager Craig Shakespeare has also left the club following Dean Smith’s sacking on Sunday; and as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Villa officially parted ways with Smith on Sunday days after a fifth consecutive defeat in the Premier League. There was no mention of Shakespeare in the club’s statement on Smith, but The Telegraph claim that the 58-year-old, who moved to Villa Park in August 2020, has also departed.

Coach Aaron Danks and set-piece specialist Austin MacPhee are still at the club, with Villa’s search for a new manager underway.

The likes of Steven Gerrard and Ralph Hasenhuttl are thought to be under consideration by the Villa hierarchy, whereas initial contact was made with Paulo Fonseca last week, with an appointment aiming to be finalised before the international break is over.

Shakespeare is no stranger to abrupt departures from Premier League clubs, having also been dismissed by Everton and Watford under the reigns of Sam Allardyce and Nigel Pearson respectively. His time in charge of Leicester in 2017 was brief and unsuccessful, lasting for just eight months as he left them in the top-flight relegation zone.

Villa fans react

The Telegraph’s Matt Law shared the news regarding Shakespeare on Sunday, which led to these Villa supporters giving their thoughts to the news on social media. Many were quite pleased to see him go, believing that he didn’t cover himself in glory during his time working under Smith.

Galloway questions Leeds’ James fee

Politician and radio host George Galloway has questioned Leeds United’s decision to spend £25m on Dan James during the summer transfer market.

The Lowdown: Leeds get their man

In 2019, Leeds had all but confirmed the signing of James from Swansea City – he had even been pictured with a club shirt – but the move fell through on deadline day (via inews).

In the summer, they finally confirmed the signing of the Wales international, this time from Manchester United, for a fee of £25m (BBC).

The Latest: Galloway questions James signing

Writing on his official Twitter account, Galloway questioned the fee paid for the 23-year-old. He said:

“I don’t wish to be unkind and I’m rooting for Wales but I just cannot understand how Dan James can possibly be a £25million player…”

The Verdict: Overpaid

While James is not Leeds’ record signing – that honour remains with Rodrigo, who was captured from Valencia for £26m – the £25m fee is still a considerable one for Leeds to part with.

He was never able to nail down a regular starting spot in the Red Devils’ starting XI, and ended up making just 15 appearances in the Premier League last term, scoring just three times, as his club finished second in the table (Transfermarkt).

If he had not been playing for one of the biggest clubs in the country, it is hard to see how he would be worth such a large fee given that kind of form.

All that said, the winger is still young, and if he can add some more consistent end product to his pace and dribbling ability then he could more than prove his worth down the line.

In other news, Noel Whelan is excited by these Leeds United plans.

Newcastle manager news on Howe

A source from Newcastle United has revealed that there are now talks taking place with Eddie Howe ahead of potentially making him their next manager.

The Lowdown: Second choice?

The Athletic reported just yesterday that Howe was the alternative option to Unai Emery to take charge at St. James’ Park, with the latter originally looking likely to be the next permanent manager.

However, Emery has recently released a statement claiming that he is now going to stay at Villarreal, meaning that they have to look at other candidates, as the new owners scramble to get someone in before the weekend.

Nonetheless, it looks as if Howe is now the favourite to take over from Graeme Jones.

The Latest: Howe talks

Speaking to Football Insider, a Tyneside club source has now revealed that terms are being negotiated with Howe over his potential appointment, and that Amanda Staveley is ‘confident’ that they will get their man.

The Magpies have turned ‘quickly’ to Howe, after Emery had doubts over the club’s strategy.

Should both parties reach a full agreement, then Howe should be appointed in time for their weekend clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The former AFC Bournemouth boss is ‘willing’ to work alongside Jones, and this is believed to be a ‘critical factor’.

The Verdict: Good fit

Howe is certainly a good fit for the Magpies for the predicament that they find themselves in at the moment.

Even though he did bring the Cherries back down to the Championship after five straight seasons in the Premier League (Transfermarkt), he at least has experience of fighting relegation battles, and his route of getting them up to the top flight in the first place should certainly not go unnoticed – the South coast outfit had a fraction of the resources as the Magpies now will.

Former Premier League boss Harry Redknapp lauded the ‘incredible’ job that he did at Bournemouth, while even the great Sir Alex Ferguson rates him as well, praising him during the summer amidst links to Celtic.

Howe certainly has his admirers, and given that he is out of work, should be far more attainable for the consortium.

Celtic: Scott Robertson impressing on loan

A product of the highly impressive Celtic academy, Scott Robertson is very much a player to keep an eye on at Parkhead in the coming years.

Indeed, while the central midfielder has made just one senior appearance for the Bhoys – rather unfortunately coming in a 2-0 Europa League loss against CFR Cluj back in 2019 – the 20-year-old has been quietly developing himself as a footballer over three loan spells south of the border.

The first of these came during the first half of last season, in the form of a four-month stint at Gillingham, where the midfielder would go on to make 19 appearances for the Gills, providing two assists for his teammates along the way.

Upon his return to Parkhead in January, the youngster was almost immediately snapped back up by another League One side, Doncaster Rovers, with Robertson subsequently featuring 15 times for Richie Wellens’ side, registering one assist during his time with the Dons.

As a result of his impressive displays for two separate League One sides last time out, Crewe Alexandra decided to take the 20-year-old on a season-long this summer, where the midfielder has continued his impressive development in the third tier of English football.

Indeed, over his eight League One appearances in the current campaign, Robertson has already bagged one goal, as well as taking an average of one shot and making 0.9 key passes per game.

The youngster has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.5 interceptions, 2.9 tackles, 1.5 clearances and winning a whopping seven duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the Celtic loanee earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.88, ranking him as Crewe’s fourth-best performer in the league.

Indeed, the 20-year-old’s consistent level of performance has also led to the praise of his manager, David Artell, who claimed back in September that the midfielder was the club’s best player at that particular moment.

On Robertson’s displays, Artell said: “Scott’s character is bang on. He listens intently and he looks at you and you know he is taking it all in. There is no noise going on in his head when you speak to him. He wants to listen and learn and when you are like that then you are only going to get better.

“He was terrific again [against Burton Albion]. Really, really good and he was absolutely shattered in those last five minutes because he had run himself into the ground. He has probably been our best performer in the last three games but he knows that has to continue. He knows he has to maintain those levels but he has come here, taken things on board and his attitude to the work is first class… we have a real gem of a player on our hands.”

As such, with another season of regular game time, not to mention a collection of impressive performances, under his belt, upon Robertson’s return to Parkhead, the 20-year-old could take one step closer to emulating his academy predecessor in central midfield, Callum McGregor, and could well cause Ange Postecoglou something of a selection headache in the middle of the park next season.
