Umar Akmal troubled by side strain

Umar Akmal, the Pakistan batsman, has picked up a side strain during the preparatory camp for the ICC World Twenty20 but is expected to be fit in time for the tournament which starts on April 30

Cricinfo staff10-Apr-2010Umar Akmal, the Pakistan batsman, has picked up a side strain during the preparatory camp for the ICC World Twenty20 but is expected to be fit in time for the tournament which starts on April 30.Akmal has stopped taking part in the nets sessions at the training camp in Lahore, and is the fourth player to be injured since the camp started – Pakistan’s leading Twenty20 bowler, Umar Gul, injured his shoulder earlier this week, while allrounder Yasir Arafat and batsman Fawad Alam are also facing fitness problems.Shahid Afridi, who will lead Pakistan’s defence of their World Twenty20 crown, was convinced his players would recover in the three weeks remaining before the competition starts in the West Indies.”There is nothing serious about the injuries, which is why I’m confident that the boys will be ready to give their best in the World Twenty20,” he told the .He said both Akmal and Gul will return to practice in a few days. “Umar is getting troubled by the injury because it becomes painful when he bats which is why he is not attending the nets,” he said. “[Regarding Gul] We are expecting to get the (MRI) report soon but I’m hoping that Gul will be back to training within the next three days.”The Pakistan squad is undergoing rigorous training in Lahore in a bid to improve fielding and general fitness. They are slated to play Bangladesh and Australia in the league phase, on May 1st and 2nd respectively.

Adams believes Hamilton-Brown can take Surrey to the top

Chris Adams, the Surrey coach, believes Rory Hamilton Brown, the 22-year-old Sussex allrounder, has the ‘charisma and intelligence’ to lead Surrey to the top of English cricket

Cricinfo staff15-Dec-2009Chris Adams, the Surrey coach, believes Rory Hamilton-Brown, the 22-year-old Sussex allrounder, has the ‘charisma and intelligence’ to lead Surrey to the top of English cricket.Hamilton-Brown, who is currently with England’s Performance Programme squad in South Africa, moved to Sussex from the Oval in 2008 but Adams, who joined Surrey after the 2008 season, is hoping to attract Hamilton-Brown back to London when they talk on Wednesday.”We’ve got sell him the vision,” said Adams to Surrey TV. “The journey that we have begun here which we hope will be a very special one. I want Surrey to go back to the top of English cricket, that’s what I’m doing here.”After a difficult first year in charge in which Surrey won just one of their 16 Division Two Championship matches and culminated in captain Mark Butcher’s retirement, Adams said the club needs a leader who can inspire and galvanise the squad as the club moves forward and claims that ‘Surrey lad’ Hamilton-Brown is the man to do so.”We need a new captain who really brings the players together and if you look at the guys out there currently, there’s not a massive list. Rory’s name came right at the very top. I know the lad, he’s a super talented cricketer and he’s a Surrey lad first and foremost.”He’s had 85% of his cricket through the Surrey system and a couple of years at Sussex, he’s developed exceptionally well and the time is right for me and him to come together and formulate a partnership which will take Surrey back to where it needs to be – the top of English cricket.”Hamilton-Brown would become the youngest captain on the county circuit and would have to manage the famously volatile temperament of star-batsman Mark Ramprakash. Yet Adams believes the English game can be too conservative and points to the example of Graeme Smith, who got the South African captaincy at the age of 22, to show what can be achieved.”Captains are born. You need charisma and intelligence and the ability to get people to follow you and Rory has that,” said Adams.”One of the problems of English cricket is that we’re too steeped in tradition, When we’re presented with an opportunity like this we tend to rule it out. But look at Graeme Smith – he captained South Africa at 22, look at Cameron White, now in Australia’s one-day team – captained Victoria at 20.”

Mohammad Yousuf backs bowlers against 'beatable' Australia

The Pakistan captain is upbeat about their prospects in the upcoming three Test series in Australia and expects his bowlers to be the crucial factor in helping them achieve glory for the first time in the country

Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf is upbeat about his team’s chances in the upcoming three Tests in Australia and expects his bowlers to play a crucial role in winning a series for the first time in the country.Yousuf hoped fast bowlers Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul and Mohammad Aamer, along with legspinner Danish Kaneria, would have an impact similar to the one they had in New Zealand, where they took 47 wickets between them and helped Pakistan draw the three-Test contest 1-1.”The feeling one had some years ago that beating Australia in Australia is impossible is no longer there among our players,” Yousuf said. “I think we have a bowling attack that is capable of causing problems for Australia and they are now beatable.”Chris Gayle’s men were impressive here and stretched the home side on a number of occasions during the Tests. Benn’s success as a spinner is also a good omen for us because Kaneria is firing well.”Former Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson also predicted of a closely-fought contest and believed the bowlers were more than capable of causing Australia problems during the series, which gets underway on Boxing Day in Melbourne.”I expect them to play well,” Lawson said. “The New Zealand Test series will have toughened them up a bit so they won’t be underdone in the Test mode of the game.”Their bowling attack is pretty good, they have a very good spinner in Kaneria and with the first two Tests in Sydney and in Melbourne, where it turns, it could put some pressure on the Australian batsmen.”The batting and fielding disciplines, though, were still a worry for Yousuf. “Our bowling is not a worry and they did well in New Zealand but we have to lift our batting and fielding standards if we want to improve our performances in Australia,” he said. “It is up to us now to take advantage of the situation and try to do well in the coming series. I just hope that our openers, Salman Butt and Imran Farhat, continue to do well as they did in New Zealand. They must carry the same form in Australia.”Pakistan are currently involved in a three-day tour game against Tasmania in Hobart.

Man Utd have Pochettino approach rebuffed

Manchester United have been handed a potentially significant blow in their pursuit of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor.

What’s the story?

Current Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as the leading candidate to replace the Norwegian in the Old Trafford dugout, but prising him away from the Ligue 1 leaders will be a tricky task.

According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, sources are stating that United have seen their initial approaches rebuffed by the PSG hierarchy, although he remains their No. target.

The report states that: “Manchester United have had an initial enquiry about the immediate availability of Mauricio Pochettino knocked back by Paris Saint-Germain, sources have told ESPN.

“United have made Pochettino their top target as their next permanent manager following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday.

“The club are open to appointing Pochettino now if a deal can be struck, but intermediaries tasked with assessing the 49-year-old’s situation at PSG have reported back that the French side are, for now, unwilling to talk.”

Man Utd fans will be fuming

News that initial efforts to secure Pochettino’s services have failed will leave large sections of United’s supporters fuming, given his outstanding credentials.

The Argentine tactician transformed Tottenham Hotspur from perennial underachievers to Champions League regulars during his five-and-a-half-year spell in north London, even guiding them to a European cup final. That was before claiming his first piece of silverware via a French Cup success last term after moving to France.

Nevertheless, it’s believed that the 49-year-old is currently unhappy in Paris, with Dawson’s latest revelation claiming Pochettino would be keen on the United vacancy but is under contract until 2023 after signing an extension in the summer.

As a result, the 20-time English champions are likely to hire an interim manager until the summer before returning for the South American once again.

Several candidates have been outlined for the temporary position in the red half of Manchester, but former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde appears to be at the front of the queue at this moment in time.

It remains to be seen who takes over the reins in the short and long-term as the Glazers and co. decide what’s best for United’s future, and this latest setback will only add to the hierarchy’s frustration as their number one choice for the role goes begging.

What will add to the worrying nature of the situation is that United didn’t decipher the former Spurs boss’ availability before getting rid of Solskjaer at the start of the week. Concerning for the Old Trafford faithful is the alarming lack of planning despite their quick downfall this season.

This has the potential to turn into a rather messy situation, one the club could deal without given rising fan tension and protest this term.

Victorian bowlers set up easy victory

A clinical performance by Victoria meant the Delhi Daredevils, like Royal Challengers Bangalore yesterday, were in danger of failing to make full use of the home advantage

The Bulletin by Judhajit Basu09-Oct-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out
Clint McKay played a major part in setting up Victoria’s seven-wicket win•Getty ImagesA similar story to yesterday’s panned out at the Feroz Shah Kotla, with another Indian team failing to capitalise on home conditions and crowd support. Delhi Daredevils – under new captain Gautam Gambhir – were comprehensively beaten by Victoria, for whom Clint McKay led a devastating seam attack, in the opening match of Group D.The win capped off a remarkable day for the Australian participants, after New South Wales pummelled the Eagles a few hours earlier at the same venue.Delhi had been left to look like outsiders against an attack that was relentless on a track with consistently uneven bounce, and which made run-scoring quite problematic. Gambhir had not bargained for such a dismal showing after choosing to bat and Delhi just managed to scrape past the second-lowest Twenty20 score at this venue, recorded by the Eagles earlier. The signs that a devil might just be in the pitch were first seen in the third over. The ball from Shane Harwood kept low, Gambhir was slow in getting his bat down in time and his off stump went cartwheeling.Virender Sehwag attempted to stamp his authority at home by smashing boundaries off successive Harwood deliveries, but was superbly caught and bowled by McKay in his first over off a mistimed shot on the leg side. McKay followed it up by getting Owais Shah caught behind for a duck. The Victorian fielders were always alert, keeping the batsmen on their toes. A moment of indecision from Tillakaratne Dilshan had Dinesh Karthik scrambling for safety at the bowler’s end. Cameron White swooped in from cover and threw it back to Andrew McDonald, who took the bails off in a flash. The situation called for Dilshan to play the anchor role and he was relatively sedate till the 16th over, when McKay – who seemed to be enjoying the conditions – lured him out and removed his off stump. Mithun Manhas tried to make the most of his run-out reprieve, but a suspected hamstring injury did not augur well for Delhi and Harwood broke through his defences to send him back for 25. McDonald capped off a superb display by castling Bhatia and Sangwan in the final over. However, there was more disappointment in store for the partisan crowd. If there were any doubts about the pitch during and after Delhi’s innings, Rob Quiney settled them in style. Dirk Nannes, bowling to his state team-mates, was handed no favours, as Quiney belted the ball past him to the mid-on boundary. Nannes’ new-ball partner Ashish Nehra fared no better and was carted for a four and a six in his third over. With 32 on the board in the fifth over, Delhi were in a state of panic and bewilderment. The introduction of legspinner Amit Mishra did not prove fruitful immediately, with Quiney attacking him from the start. Mishra was dispatched for six over long-on in his very first over, and the second and third deliveries of his next over disappeared for ten runs. Mishra persisted with flight and bowled Quiney next ball, the batsman failing to connect while trying to work to the leg side.Brad Hodge, who had been watching the pyrotechnics from the other end, was cleaned up by Dilshan two balls later, but with Victoria racing to 55 for 2 in the ninth over, Delhi needed a pre-Diwali miracle. Dilshan and Mishra, bowling in tandem, managed to stifle the runs but Victoria had been delivered a productive start, and could afford to sit back.Even Rajat Bhatia’s dismissal of David Hussey with a slower one did little to instill confidence in Gambhir to try out Pradeep Sangwan’s left-arm seam. It didn’t make much difference, for Aiden Blizzard ended the innings on a high, smashing Bhatia for a six over long-on.

'Two nineties are disappointing, I'll take the runs' – Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene’s success at the SSC has become a creature of habit. This is, after all, a man who has averaged 79. 58 with 2467 runs in his 22 Tests at the venue. When he missed a century in the first innings by eight runs, there was an air of inevitability that Jayawardene would get there in the second innings, seeing as Sri Lanka would definitely try and bat New Zealand out of this Test.Instead, Jayawardene put himself into the record books for a reason that left him bittersweet at the end of the day. Falling in the nineties again, and to the same bowler (Iain O’Brien) and with a similar shot, Jayawardene become just the fourth player – and first Asian – to make two nineties in a Test.”I have always wanted to put effort into spending time at the crease and at the end of the day, while two nineties are disappointing, I’ll take the runs,” Jayawardene said. “The first innings was more disappointing, though. If we had gone through and got a big score then probably we would have been in a much better situation.”Surely you jest, Mahela? The way New Zealand have batted all tour, Sri Lanka would have surely been comfortable with a first-innings score of 416. When he walked out in the second innings, it was with a determined stride and from the start you sensed he was checking in for a while. This is a batsman who, once settled, is unlikely to get out against such bowling and in such conditions. To the spinners, on a wearing track, Jayawardene’s preferred shots were off the back foot, going right back to hit the ball on top of the bounce either behind point or to square leg. He played several such shots off Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel. Against the seamers, there were wristy flicks and delicate dabs and copybook cover-drives. Until he poked at one from Iain O’Brien on 96, Jayawardene had batted with faultless assurance.”Whenever I go out it is to do well. Keeping consistency is something I’ve thrived on,” he said. “I wanted to get a hundred in the second innings but I got a peach of a delivery. You can’t always help it.”Jayawardene has been the center of Sri Lanka’s batting archipelago since the retirements of Aravinda de Silva and Arjuna Ranatunga, and has consistently proven himself a batsman with the temperament and the strokes for big scores. Since giving up the captaincy, Jayawardene said his approach had not changed. “I’ve always said I’ve taken captaincy and batting separately. My contribution is important but right now I don’t have captaincy responsibility. I am 32 and hopefully I have three or four years of my best time where I learn a lot and push myself harder.”Jayawardene’s efforts have put Sri Lanka into a winning position and its now just about wrapping things up. If Jayawardene’s role with the bat numbed New Zealand into submission, then the left-arm spinner Rangana Herath’s four wickets had the tourists puzzled. Herath, after being dropped for Ajantha Mendis in Galle, has continued his rich vein of form with seven wickets so far in the Test. Four came today in a spell in which Herath bowled better than Test cricket’s highest wicket-taker at the other end.”We’ve invested in Rangana for some time. He’s been our second best spinner for quite some time now before Ajantha came into the scene,” Jayawardene said. “He’s been around for a while and we’ve had belief in him. Now he’s put his hand up and said ‘I’m capable of handling that No. 1 spot once Murali leaves’. With the experience Rangana has, he will probably be our best spinner for some time.”

Murali sets Test retirement date

Muttiah Muralitharan has said he will retire from Test cricket at the end of Sri Lanka’s home series against West Indies in November 2010

Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan has said he will retire from Test cricket next year. Murali, who is the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 770 wickets in 127 Tests, announced that the two-Test home series against West Indies in November 2010 would be his last.Speaking at the end of the first ODI against Pakistan, in which he won the Man-of-the-Match award, the 37-year-old Murali said he would focus on playing one-day cricket until the 2011 World Cup, to be held in the subcontinent, and would thereafter stick to Twenty20 cricket.”I am not going to play for a long time. Next year’s West Indies series will be the last two Test matches I will be playing,” Muralitharan said. “That’s the right time for me because I will be 38 years old. The 2011 World Cup is my aim, but I will enjoy playing Twenty20 cricket for a few more years.”The hardest game in cricket is Tests. The hardest part is you have to take wickets and get batsmen out and sometimes you have to spend two days on the field. You have to mentally prepare yourself for every game. In Twenty20, you look to contain the batsmen and he tries some shots and gets out. Fifty-over cricket is also the same. In Test cricket you have to read the batsmen, set the fields properly and get the wickets.”Muralitharan missed Sri Lanka’s 2-0 win in the recent three-Test series against Pakistan due to a torn tendon in his right knee, which could be one of the factors in his decision.”I put in a lot of effort in the last one month to be fit,” said Muralitharan. “I trained very hard with the physio Tommy [Simsek] and trainers Jade [Roberts] and Mario [Villavarayan] who helped me to get through the difficult period. I also enjoyed the rest. I trained hard although I knew my knee was not right.Murali’s milestonesAugust, 1992 – Murali made his Test debut against Australia at the Khettarama Stadium and took 3 for 141.December, 1995 – No-balled by Darrell Hair seven times for a suspect action during the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.March, 1997 – Became the first Sri Lankan to reach 100 Test wickets.January, 2002 – Became the fastest to reach the 400-wicket landmark. It took him only 72 Tests. May, 2004: Went past Courtney Walsh’s record for the most Test wickets when he claims his 520th wicket. July, 2007 Reached the 700-wicket milestone in his 113th Test. The last 100 wickets came in 12 Tests.”The doctors said that I have to go through with it and train harder. I can’t go for an operation because I will be out for six to seven months. That will mean my career is almost over and that I am not going to play for a long time.”A torn tendon is a very big injury and it will take a long time to heal. The best suggestion was for me to rest for two to three weeks, train hard and play with a little pain. I was prepared to go through with it. The doctors said that I can definitely play with the injury for about one to two years but in the end when I finish I will have to operate on it.”Muralitharan, who once harboured hopes of becoming the first bowler in Test history to take 1000 wickets, said the lack of Test cricket for Sri Lanka had made it difficult for him to achieve the milestone.”If I am to get 1000 Test wickets we have to play Test matches regularly,” Muralitharan said. “These days we play fewer Test matches.”In 2010, Sri Lanka have only the two-Test series at home against West Indies to look forward to. However, Muralitharan said 800 wickets would be a more realistic target as Sri Lanka are due to play two home Tests against New Zealand starting next month, followed by three Tests in India at the end of the year.Muralitharan made his Test debut against Australia in 1992, and became Test cricket’s leading wicket-taker when he went past Shane Warne’s record of 708 wickets against England in December 2007, fittingly on his home ground in Kandy. He achieved the grand double of being the highest wicket-taker in ODIs as well when he went past Wasim Akram’s record of 502 wickets in 2009.He currently has 507 ODI wickets from the 330 ODIs played, at an average of 22.74. He has also featured in eight Twenty20 internationals, picking up 11 wickets at 16.81.
