Pundit says Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool makes sense - Exclusive

Ligue 1 expert Adam White reckons that Liverpool would suit Kylian Mbappe would more than any of the other top-six clubs in the Premier League.

Despite a goalless European Championships, the 22-year-old has established himself as one of the most lethal forwards in European football recent seasons.

Mbappe scored an exceptional 42 goals and added 11 assists in all competitions for PSG last season, including a stunning Champions League hat-trick away to Barcelona.

But the 22-year-old superstar’s future in the French capital is in major doubt having been unable to agree a new contract, leaving him in serious danger of leaving for free next summer.

And therefore, the £160m-rated attacker is constantly being linked away from PSG, although it would take a huge offer to prize him away despite having just one-year left.

Real Madrid have shown a keen interest, but according to the Mirror, Jurgen Klopp’s men have entered the race and are seen as one of the leading contenders to sign the Frenchman.

And Get French Football News’ White thinks that should he move to England, Merseyside would make most sense.

He told Football FanCast:

“He’s not a winger, he’s not a number nine, he needs to be playing that inside forward. He was best at Monaco in a two with Falcao.

“Where is he going to play that off the left inside forward or part of a two, I would argue that’s probably Liverpool. Given the way their front-three works, their wider men play that inside role. Liverpool would make most sense.”

Gold makes exciting Paratici claim at Spurs

Speaking in a Q&A for football.london, reliable Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has made a promising claim involving Fabio Paratici and how his appointment can benefit for the club.

The Lowdown: Paratici arrives…

The Italian transfer guru has now been officially appointed as managing director of Tottenham and has a major say in overseeing all sporting operations at the club in terms – including facilities and football infrastructure (tottenhamhotspur.com).

Of course, the aspect of his role drawing most excitement is his reputation for facilitating big transfers in the market.

At former club Juventus, Paratici garnered a reputation for being an astute operator and played a key role in signing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for the Turin club (The Daily Mail).

The Latest: Gold makes promising Paratici claim…

Speaking in a Q&A, when asked exactly what Paratici will bring to the table at Tottenham in terms of landing youngsters or immediate impact signings, Gold dropped a promising claim.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“His history at Juventus suggests both,” the reporter explained.

“He was very good at getting free transfers over his 11 years, although there has been the odd recent one that hasn’t hit the spot like Ramsey and Rabiot, while he has also spent the money when required on immediate impact players.

“One thing is clear and that is that he has a huge network of contacts and good relationships with clubs across the game and he’ll be able to help deliver what Tottenham require within the parameters the club’s finances dictate.”

The Verdict: Promising…

Gold’s behind the scenes claim on just how well connected Paratici is will come as music to the ears of some supporters.

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy also recently heralded the 48-year-old as a ‘tough negotiator’ and that is something Spurs will definitely need in this odd transfer landscape struck by the financial implications of Covid-19.

Spurs will need to operate astutely given their sell-to-buy transfer policy and Paratici may just be the man for a tough summer task ahead.

Alan Nixon drops Leeds update on Lewis O’Brien

Alan Nixon has dropped an update on Leeds United’s pursuit of Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

What’s the story?

Previously, writing via his official Twitter account, Nixon said that O’Brien was “very near” to the top of the short-list for Leeds this summer as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

And now, the journalist has dropped an update on the situation, revealing that the Terriers ace may actually not be the man that the Whites go after, saying: “I think there’s somebody ahead of him on the shopping list”.

Intriguing update from Smyth

The news that Leeds have a name ahead of O’Brien on their list of targets is intriguing to say the least, with the Whites just a few weeks away from opening up their Premier League campaign against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have made some moves in the transfer window already, bringing in the likes of Amari Miller, Junior Firpo and Sean McGurk, but only one of those names you would consider a potential first-team starter next season.

In O’Brien, Leeds could find someone who could be ready to make that step up from the Championship to the Premier League, with Huddersfield Town writer Steven Chicken waxing lyrical about his potential.

He said: “He certainly has the potential to be (a Premier League player), if he’s not already. His fitness is incredible and he just never seems to get tired, which is one of the biggest difficulties Championship players have when stepping up to the Premier League.

“He’s never going to be a big glamorous name in the Premier League, but he is the kind of wholehearted, committed player that managers love because they do so much of the hard work that helps other players to shine.”

But with Nixon now claiming that Leeds have got their eye on someone else, it will certainly be intriguing for the club’s fans to see who the Whites have in mind as they look to beef up their midfield options.

Meanwhile, Leeds are closing in on a major agreement…

Leicester City could sell Youri Tielemans

Leicester City could receive a huge blow this summer after star midfielder Youri Tielemans was linked with a move to Manchester United.

What’s the story?

According to Belgian journalist Sven Claes, the Red Devils are keen to secure the 24-year-old’s signature over the upcoming transfer window, with one of Spain’s top teams also said to be interested in him. He also said that he expects Tielemans to leave the King Power Stadium this summer.

Tielemans won Leicester’s 2020/21 Supporters’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season after a stellar campaign, once which has seemingly attracted the attention of the continent’s best clubs.

Would be a huge blow

The Belgium international has been one of the Foxes’ standout performers since his arrival on loan from Monaco halfway through the 2018/19 campaign.

After making his stay at the King Power Stadium permanent at the end of the season in a £40 million deal, Tielemans has gone from strength to strength under the tutelage of Brendan Rodgers.

He’s made 108 appearances for the Midlands outfit, scoring 17 goals and laying on 19 assists in the process, but his stunning effort to seal the club’s maiden FA Cup crown last season is undoubtedly the midfielder’s key contribution.

However, with just two years remaining on the £33,000-per-week contract Tielemans signed back in 2019, Leicester are keen for the midfield maestro to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Contract talks are thought to have begun as Rodgers attempts to keep hold of his prized possession, although the lure of United would be enough to tempt plenty of players into making a move.

It’s easy to see why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign the diminutive star after he recorded an average of 65.2 passes per game last term and 1.3 key passes, both the second-highest totals in Leicester’s squad.

Those figures also illustrate how big a blow his departure would be for Rodgers as he aims to guide the 2016 Premier League champions back into the Champions League.

If the Foxes are to stand any chance of securing a top-four finish next season, then keeping hold of Tielemans has to be a priority, and his exit would be a serious step back in the club’s progress.

And, in other news…Time’s up: Rodgers must ruthlessly axe £7.2m-rated Leicester flop, he’s not needed

Waugh's Blues win important battle

He’s been fighting bigger battles over the course of the last week, and there are undoubtedly bigger fish to fry over the months ahead

John Polack10-Feb-2002He’s been fighting bigger battles over the course of the last week, and there are undoubtedly bigger fish to fry over the months ahead. But there was no mistaking Steve Waugh’s pleasure after he guided New South Wales to an important seven wicket victory over Tasmania in an ING Cup match here at Devonport today. In truth, Waugh played a minimalist’s role amid an outstanding team effort, leaving his most telling contribution to be delivered in the form of a late batting cameo that guided the Blues past their victory target of 250 with ten deliveries to spare.Yet his involvement in helping the Blues move to within one point of Queensland and South Australia at the head of a congested table with only one round remaining in this season’s domestic one-day competition still made for a more than satisfactory day.”It was a very good win for us,” said Waugh after the game.”The batting, in particular, was consistent all the way through. It was a very good chase.”A score of 250 always represents a big chase. If you lose early wickets (pursuing a target of that size), you’re always pressure. So I’m very pleased with the way we won the game.”It has been an unusual week for the national captain, what with Australia’s failure to qualify for a home one-day international finals series for only the third time in 22 years having been followed by a hostile exchange with the press. That the run-in later spilled over in a series of articles questioning his longevity and challenging his legitimacy to any extension of his role as the country’s one-day leader only added to the drama. If signs of his mortality are manifest, though, then he found a good way of masking them here as he helped the Blues negate the effect of a good Tasmanian start and register an impressive win. At a moment of potential vulnerability, his leadership was as ruthless as ever. From a national point of view, Waugh was also able to derive pleasure from the play of an opponent. Before today, he had not been formally introduced to Shane Watson, Tasmania’s exciting 20-year-old all-rounder and a member of the Test squad that he will be taking to South Africa later this week. But he gained a pretty good insight into the youngster’s prodigious talents in the space of just seven hours as he watched him compose an excellent 96 and snare the wicket of Mark Waugh (60) amid a tight spell with the ball.Watson is a young man in a hurry, and it seems that he doesn’t mind cutting down a few tall poppies if it quickens the passage to his destination. He was forced into a cautious mindset early in dealing with the furious pace of national fast bowler Brett Lee (1/34), whose deliveries only intensified in velocity with each gust of a southerly breeze howling at his back. But, after overcoming Lee’s fire, he helped himself to his highest limited-overs score at domestic level with a mixture of scorching drives, cuts and pulls. With opener Michael Dighton (52) and fellow all-rounder Scott Kremerskothen (43*), he also made a mess of the leg spin of Stuart MacGill (1/72), and pace bowlers Stuart Clark (0/44) and Nathan Bracken (3/49) were similarly rendered less effective than normal.Though collected on an excellent batting surface, the Tasmanians’ total of 7/249 represented an excellent return in the absence of the injured Ricky Ponting and Jamie Cox, their two most respected batsmen. Also welcome was the touch of stand-in captain Daniel Marsh, who won the toss – under sunny skies and in front of an excellent crowd of 4907 – where Ponting and Cox had been unable to achieve that feat as many as 12 of 15 times between them this season.Missed run outs, and a dropped catch that allowed Dighton to dodge a bullet at 19 helped too.But the favour was rapidly returned when Marsh spilled an early chance at slip as Corey Richards (60) and Mark Waugh embarked on an opening partnership of 116 in a brisk start to the reply. Their association went a long way toward shaping the game’s fate.New South Wales even appeared to have an eye on the extraction of a bonus point by the time that Richards lobbed a catch to mid on to help cap an encouraging return to state ranks for Gerard Denton (1/53) after 14 months away because of a back injury. It zoomed more clearly into focus as Nathan Pilon (28) – playing in his first domestic one-day match in the absence of the injured Brad Haddin – arrived with a licence to throw caution to the howling breezes. But, once Watson (1/43) had lured Richards’ fellow opener into outside edging a leg cutter, the Blues appeared intent merely on moving to within a point of the competition lead.Alas, all that was left was for Michael Bevan (62*) to join with Steve Waugh (32*) in a cool, methodical stand that ended the game.

Attention to detail is Wright's hallmark

Sourav Ganguly’s latest consignment of bats arrived from Meerut just after the Indian captain finished his stint out in the ‘open nets’ at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. A man in love with cricket bats, Ganguly chooses a fresh batch of blades before each tour. The six-week tour to Zimbabwe is no exception. The open nets itself had an atmosphere of great purpose without being overbearing or sombre. John Wright, behind the bowler’s arm watched over every ball as the probables slogged away. The idea is a simple one and not new at all. A simulated match situation out in the middle, with the fast bowlers and spinners operating in turns ensued. The first to enter were Ganguly and VVS Laxman, while the other batsmen waited their turns. In time all batsmen had a stint out in the middle and the bowlers were a tired lot. Perhaps that’s what prompted the local boys to chip in and help with preparations. Anil Kumble was in for a quick session but left early. Sunil Joshi, Venkatesh Prasad and Dodda Ganesh spent a lot of time bowling despite not being in the list of probables selected by the board. In the coaching department, Wright was not alone. Roger Binny moved across from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and helped the Kiwi conduct the practice sessions. Erapalli Prasanna finished his stint with the NCA boys and he too cast his watchful eye over the Indian seniors for a while. The atmosphere at the camp was as healthy as one could expect. All drills happened in right earnest with no one being exempted for any reason. When not out in the middle, the players were by the sidelines practicing throwing. At first it seemed strange that the players should be spending so much time practicing throwing. Closer inspection however, made it clear that this was yet another of Wright’s moves. Showing a keen attention to detail, Wright is attempting to make sure that all Indian cricketers throw with the right action. Concentrating on position and shift in body weight, Wright is attempting to minimise the shoulder injuries that have laid low more than one Indian bowler in the recent past. With team selection due soon, the selectors have all gathered in Bangalore. And seldom has their job been easier. Although the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Virender Shewag and Ajay Ratra are shaping up well, it is difficult to see them making the trip to Zimbabwe. Five seamers, two spinners, seven batsmen and one stumper seems to be the mantra.

Spurs: Kane won’t be inspired by Fonseca

Daniel Levy needs to get his next managerial appointment at Tottenham Hotspur spot on if he’s to have even the smallest chance of keeping Harry Kane at the club.

A bombshell over the 27-year-old’s future in North London was dropped last month, with Sky Sports reporting that he had reaffirmed his desire to leave his boyhood club in pursuit of silverware.

Premier League rivals Manchester United, champions Manchester City and Champions League winners Chelsea have all expressed interest in the England international since this revelation, so the Spurs chairman has a tough task on his hands this summer.

It’s understood that Levy convinced Kane to stay for Jose Mourinho’s first full season in charge of the club, where they had hoped that the Portuguese manager would bring them the success that the talisman and those around Tottenham had been desperately craving.

By no means is Kane’s stance certainly going to change following the arrival of a top-class manager but Levy could certainly bolster his claims – especially as there will not be many teams able to afford his whopping £150m asking price – by finding the right man.

This week, a fresh candidate has emerged that could spell trouble for said chances.

According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, Spurs have been offered former AS Roma boss Paulo Fonseca after he was replaced by Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico last month.

It’s thought that the 48-year-old is seen as a cheaper alternative to Antonio Conte, who has left Inter Milan despite securing their first Serie A title in 11 years.

Given that Fonseca has been linked to other vacancies, notably Crystal Palace and Celtic, you could forgive supporters and ultimately, Kane, if they felt hugely underwhelmed.

The Portuguese has enjoyed successful spells in his home country, where he transformed the fortunes of Pacos de Ferreira and won a trophy with Sporting Braga, as well as Ukraine, where his three-time title-winning Shakhtar Donetsk side drew glowing praise from Pep Guardiola but he struggled to make much of an impact in Italy.

At Roma, Fonseca never achieved better than a fifth-place finish, which is only good enough to secure a Europa League berth whilst they have struggled on the European stage massively.

A win rate of 52% – the same as Mourinho at Spurs – is respectable in a fairly competitive league but there is nothing to suggest that Spurs would suddenly rise up to contend for trophies again under his stewardship and ultimately, that’s the sort of statement they need to make with their next appointment if they want to change Kane’s mind.

Fonseca’s reign in the Italian capital was perhaps marred by his side’s capitulation against Manchester United in the Europa League semi-final, where they lost 6-2 to a side that looked way off it tactically in the final.

Despite this embarrassing defeat, Portuguese journalist Alex Goncalves has tipped him for big things. He tweeted:

“It’s a bad result for Paulo Fonseca today, a 6-2 defeat to Manchester United. His managerial CV is exceptional, & his managerial ability matches it, but his time at Roma may be coming to an end. A talented manager who plays stylish football likely to be available this summer.”

But when names such as Conte and even a sensational return for Mauricio Pochettino are mooted, then it’s hard to envisage many fans being happy with the appointment of the 48-year-old.

If Levy opts for Fonseca, then he could well push Kane one step closer to the exit door.

Cundy reacts as Spurs eye Ten Hag

Speaking to talkSPORT, dropping his verdict on the heavy links with Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag, pundit Jason Cundy has claimed he could be the ‘ambitious’ appointment Tottenham Hotspur need – with the 51-year-old coaching a style of football that Lilywhites fans ‘want to see’.

Ten Hag has moved up the Spurs managerial shortlist after it was confirmed that exciting young coach Julian Nagelsmann has taken the job at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich (official).

Cundy reacts as Spurs eye Ten Hag

Indeed, the 33-year-old was reportedly top choice for Tottenham, but chairman Daniel Levy and co will now need to look elsewhere for a boss who can elevate them to the desired level.

Eredivisie coach Ten Hag is currently being linked, and Cundy believes he could be a good candidate for the role at Spurs.

“I think Spurs need to move forward and be a bit ambitious about their new boss.” explained the former Lilywhites defender to talkSPORT.

When asked who could come as that ‘ambitious’ appointment, Cundy explained:

“Ten Haag’s been linked, the style of play at Ajax is befitting of what Spurs fans want to see.”

Transfer Tavern take

The Dutchman has been likened to Pep Guardiola, even once working at Bayern Munich with the Manchester City boss.

Indeed, Ten Hag was the Bayern II reserve coach while Guardiola took charge of the first team – and he was apparently given that role due to his glowing reputation with young players.

Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold has backed the claim that he is proficient with nurturing future stars, with Ten Hag also encouraging a similar attack-minded style of play to Guardiola.

Given these aspects of Ten Hag’s managerial style, he could come as a really sound alternative to Nagelsmann.
