South Africa in line for new selection chief

South Africa could be in line for a new convener of selectors next month, with Andrew Hudson likely to be replaced in the top job

Firdose Moonda14-Apr-2015South Africa could be in line for a new convener of selectors next month, with Andrew Hudson likely to be replaced in the top job. The contracts of all four panel members – Hudson, Shafiek Abrahams, Hussein Manack and Linda Zondi – came to an end after the 2015 World Cup and Hudson is unlikely to be retained after five years in the job.Although there is no clear indication of who will replace Hudson, one franchise confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Ashwell Prince is among the candidates standing for election to the panel and that it will vote for him. Nominations to the panel, which will be elected on the vote of South Africa’s provincial presidents, close on April 30.Prince retired from all cricket in March but may yet return for Lancashire this season and, if appointed, could be the person on the panel with the most international experience. He played 66 Tests for South Africa, 52 ODIs and a T20 between 2002 and 2011. Abrahams, who has been tipped to keep his job, appeared in just a single ODI while Manack and Zondi featured in first-class cricket; all are likely to keep their positions.Hudson is therefore expected to be the only casualty of the current panel, and there are conflicting reasons believed to be behind his departure. “Andrew has been there a long time and he is speaking about the time he needs for his job and his young family. It seems the time is right for change,” one insider said.Another believed that the current convener may be pushed out as part of the ongoing agenda towards aggressive transformation. “They need someone who is a little more active in transformation and he isn’t driving that.”Cricket South Africa recently reaffirmed a commitment to transformation with increased quotas at domestic level. Franchise teams will be required to field at least six players of colour, of which three must be black Africans, but there remains no official quota at international level. However, insiders have confirmed there are targets that are expected to be met – at least four players of colour in every team that takes the field and international sides are sent to CSA’s transformation manager for vetting. It is believed that was what led to the recent controversy around Vernon Philander’s selection for the World Cup semi-final. Allegations in the South African press – denied by CSA – claimed that Philander, who had been carrying a hamstring injury through the tournament, was forced into the starting XI at the behest of the board, who went over the selectors’ and the coach and captain’s heads. Russell Domingo and AB de Villiers are believed to have wanted Kyle Abbott to play. One source said Hudson was partly to blame for the situation reaching that point. “Everybody knows we have to play four players of colour so that should have been done in the first place to avoid all this,” a source said.Hudson was appointed convener in 2010 and presided over two different panels that oversaw major changes to the leadership of the South African team. In his first stint Hudson was required to pick a replacement fifty-over captain when Graeme Smith stepped down after the 2011 World Cup, while in his second, the selectors were tasked with appointing a new Test captain in 2014 following Smith’s retirement from the game.Hudson’s tenure was largely uncontroversial, particularly from a political perspective, bar one incident involving Thami Tsolekile. The wicketkeeper was nationally contracted in 2012 when Mark Boucher had made public his intention to retire and was widely tipped to take over behind the stumps. But when Boucher’s exit was accelerated after a career-ending eye-injury in England that year, AB de Villiers was preferred for the job.Tsolekile claimed Hudson had promised him he would be in the starting XI in the next season, when New Zealand and Pakistan toured, but that never happened. Hudson admitted he “did tell Thami he would get his chance against New Zealand,” but the situation changed when de Villiers expressed interest in keeping permanently.Among Hudson’s big finds was including rookie spinners Dane Piedt and Simon Harmer in Test squads, picking Quinton de Kock across all formats and backing Imran Tahir at limited-overs levels.

Dhaka Division start as favourites again

What to look out for in the various teams, in the National Cricket League 2014-15

Mohammad Isam24-Jan-2015Dhaka DivisionWhere they finished last seasonChampionsBig PictureThe defending champions will continue to be one of the favourites to claim the title in this season’s National Cricket League. They had bounced back in 2013-14 from the horror 2011-12 season when they had finished bottom of the points table. They banked on their strong top order, spin bowling and an all-round performance from their captain Mohammad Sharif.Rony Talukdar, Abdul Majid and Nazmul Islam were the stars of last season and Sharif took 20 wickets. Their opening day game against Barisal Division will also be Sharif’s 100th first-class game. Dhaka Division will also have the services of Bangladesh legspinner Jubair Hossain, who will play his first first-class season despite making his Test debut against Zimbabwe late last year.Key playersRony Talukdar was the highest scorer in this season’s Dhaka Premier Division League, finishing with 714 runs at an average of 51.Team changesThe big miss will be Nurul Hasan who has moved to Khulna Division. He made 489 runs at 81.50 for Dhaka Division last season, and is deemed as Bangladesh’s next best wicketkeeper after Mushfiqur Rahim.Below the radarTaibur Rahman was impressive for Dhaka Premier Division League champions Prime Bank Cricket Club, with 363 runs. He was also effective for Dhaka Division last season, though he is yet to take off as middle-order batsman. What they say”I am very happy to be playing my 100th first-class match. I hope to play a 100 more (laughs). But more importantly, I would like to start the season with a win.” – Mohammad SharifRajshahi DivisionWhere they finished last seasonSecond placeBig PictureFive-time champions Rajshahi Division flattered to deceive last year but they remain the most consistent and successful first-class team in the country. Their confidence in the longer-format comes from a process set across Rajshahi from where they have scouted methodically for the past decade.Rajshahi would want the likes of Junaid Siddique, Farhad Hossain and Mizanur Rahman to return among the runs after an ordinary 2013-14 season. Rajshahi started poorly last season and only ended up second after finishing well and threatening Dhaka Division to the title. The division continues to be the blueprint for first-class teams in Bangladesh, and their consistency is much sought after. A group of senior players has been developed over the years, which is paying rich dividends although they haven’t produced enough players off-late for the national team.Key playersFarhad Reza was their highest scorer last year though he didn’t bowl as well. He, however, had a good Dhaka Premier League campaign for Prime Bank, which would be one of the reasons why Rajshahi can be a bigger threat.Team changesThe absence of Sabbir Rahman could hit Rajshahi hard. He is in Bangladesh’s World Cup squad, and over the last few seasons Sabbir had been a consistent performer and a vital cog for Rajshahi’s well-oiled machine.Below the radarTawhid Tariq Khan has been picked in the Rajshahi squad, after he was the highest run-scorer in the Dhaka First Division Cricket league, the city’s second-tier one-day competition. What they say”Of course we want to target the championship this season. We have a lot of the familiar faces in our squad this year as well.” – Farhad HossainRangpur DivisionWhere they finished last seasonThird placeBig PictureIt was a surprise that they ended up third last season. But the likes of Tanvir Haider, Naeem Islam and Saymon Ahmed scored at crucial times and enforced their three wins over Dhaka Metropolis, Sylhet Division and Barisal Division. As one of the smaller divisions in the country, Rangpur hardly get the attention they deserve. There are decent cricket grounds in these northern regions and they have produced several Bangladesh players. It will be yet another challenging season for the Rangpur players, who usually miss out in the Bangladesh Cricket League’s North Zone side because of Rajshahi’s dominance in the region.Key playersNaeem Islam was the second-highest scorer for Rangpur, and remains the batting stronghold for the division. He also had a fruitful time in the Dhaka Premier League, helping the lacklustre Mohammedan Sporting Club to a Super League finish. He was the league’s third-highest scorer.Team changesRangpur will be without allrounder Alauddin Babu who has been moved to Chittagong Division. Though Alauddin played only one match last season, he did get 12 wickets in the Dhaka Premier League this season and is handy with the bat.Below the radarAriful Haque proved his worth as a batsman with a hundred in this season’s last Abahani-Mohammedan derby, though his team Mohammedan ended up losing that game. But he is a talented allrounder, and his ability to bowl seam would prove necessary for Rangpur.Khulna DivisionWhere they finished last seasonFourth placeBig PictureThat Khulna finished a lowly fourth doesn’t sit well with their players. They have set a higher standard for themselves as the second most successful first-class team in the country with three NCL titles.Last season only the veteran Tushar Imran made important runs and ended up as the team’s highest scorer with 545 runs at an average of 54.50. One of the difficulties was the coming and going of national players like Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza and Anamul Haque. This season the left-arm spinner Razzak is likely to be available for the entire tournament, which will be a major boost for Khulna’s bowling attack. They will be title contenders like Dhaka Division and Rajshahi Division, and if their national players turn up for the latter stages, it would make them slightly stronger than the other teams.Key playersMohammad Mithun’s elevation to the Bangladesh team, as well as a decent season for Mohammedan Sporting Club would be a boost for Khulna who didn’t get much out of him last season. In the preceding three seasons, Mithun made more than 600 runs consecutively.Team changesRobiul Islam is unlikely to be fit for the first two matches so Khulna’s pace attack will be thin of experience with Mashrafe and Al-Amin Hossain also away.  Nurul HasanBelow the radarMustafizur Rahman is a left-arm pace bowler from Bangladesh’s previous Under-19 group, and he has also earned a Bangladesh A call-up to West Indies last year as well as a contract with Abahani in the Dhaka Premier League. He made his first-class debut for Khulna last season, but this year he may have to lead the pace attack.

Gazi to make an early return to Bangladesh

Bangladesh offspinner Sohag Gazi will return to Dhaka with the limited-overs contingent, skipping the three-day practice match against St Kitts & Nevis which starts tomorrow

Sohag Gazi will have his action tested in Cardiff on September 19•AFP

Bangladesh offspinner Sohag Gazi will return to Dhaka with the limited-overs contingent, skipping the three-day practice match against St Kitts & Nevis which starts tomorrow. The BCB wants him to apply early for the UK visa as he has to go to the Cardiff Metropolitan University to have his action tested by September 19.The original plan was to keep him in the West Indies at least till the first Test but the BCB are not going to take a chance with any delay in his visa application. But now he will take the flight out of Basseterre with the limited-overs contingent which includes Mashrafe Mortaza, Taskin Ahmed, Abdur Razzak and Mohammad Mithun (although the BCB press release on August 22 announcing the Test replacements did not include his name). The replacements – Taijul Islam, Shafiul Islam, Shuvagata Hom and Robiul Islam – have arrived in the West Indies already.”Initially we wanted him to play the first Test and then return home to apply for the UK visa,” chief selector Faruque Ahmed said. “But it takes a lot of time to get the visa, so the board doesn’t want to take any chance. He will come back with the ODI players in a day or two.”Without Sohag, uncapped left-arm spinner Taijul Islam is the only specialist spinner in the Test squad, apart from allrounders Mahmudullah and Shuvagata Hom. It was learned that the selectors are satisfied with Shuvagata’s bowling abilities. They are mainly considering pace bowling allrounder Muktar Ali and left-arm spinner Elias Sunny, both having toured the Caribbean in May this year for Bangladesh A.Legspinner Jubair Ahmed has also popped into the discussion despite having never played first-class cricket. He was part of the preliminary squad that trained ahead of the West Indies tour. It is likely that Jubair will be picked against Zimbabwe A next month.

Jennings, Collingwood see Durham home

A stand of 116 in 18 overs between Paul Collingwood and Keaton Jennings carried Durham to a five-wicket home win against Surrey in their final Royal London Cup group game

The hosts had reached 11 for 2 after three overs when a short break saw the target revised to 190 in 33 and they surpassed the total with nine balls to spare. They had slipped to 69 for 4 when Collingwood emerged to complete an outstanding all-round performance. He took 2 for 25 in 10 overs then thumped an unbeaten 62 off 56 balls. Jennings survived sharp return chances to George Edwards on 31 and Azhar Mahmood on 40 but belied his reputation as a stodgy four-day opener by making 70 off 67 balls before skying a catch to fine leg off Jack Winslade with five runs needed.Durham now have to wait until the other teams have played their final games next Wednesday to discover whether they have qualified for the quarter-finals.Surrey, with no chance of progress, had left out all their senior bowlers apart from Azhar. Among the youngsters Surrey drafted in was 19-year-old seamer Winslade, who conceded 61 runs in 6.3 overs. The target was 48 off six when Durham took the batting Powerplay and Surrey had to recall Winslade. Jennings drove his second ball back over his head to reach 50 off 52 balls.Surrey made a brisk start as Steven Davies and Tillakaratne Dilshan took 35 off the first six overs before John Hastings bowled the Sri Lankan with his third ball. Collingwood also struck with his third ball when Vikram Solanki drove a low catch to cover after labouring for 37 balls to make 14.Davies looked a high-class player in reaching 50 off 54 balls, but that was in the 25th over, which meant he had faced little more than a third of the strike. He fell for 56 when he lofted Jennings’ fifth ball to mid-off.At 108 for 5 Azhar found an impressive ally in 21-year-old Aneesh Kapil as they shared a stand of 69 in 13.5 overs. Steep bounce from Paul Coughlin accounted for Azhar for 34 but Kapil was still there on 43, made off 53 balls, when the rain arrived.

Nayar trumps Bhatia as India Blue win

On a day that a big crowd gathered in Indore to watch Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh, two of the most valuable players in Indian domestic cricket starred. Delhi’s Rajat Bhatia took three wickets to reduce India Blue – missing Yuvraj with back spasms – from 56 for 0 to 66 for 3, but Abhishek Nayar refused to slow down and responded with a counterattacking 91 off 73 balls. Bhatia wasn’t done yet. Delhi were struggling despite a Sehwag onslaught, but he took them close with his 65, most of which were scored in the company of the tail. Ashish Nehra scored his personal List A best, added 55 with Bhatia, but Delhi fell short by 18 runs in the chase of 271.The news of the day might have revolved around Yuvraj’s injury and Sehwag’s immediate success as a middle-order batsman, but the two domestic stalwarts picked the day to give a glimpse into what they do day in and day out during the domestic season. Bhatia and Nayar don’t have the dazzling skill that might make them automatic India selections, but they have the tenacity to pull their team out of trouble.India Blue had made a solid if slow start, but Bhatia’s accuracy and subtle changes of pace combined with some movement off the pitch resulted in an lbw and two bowled dismissals. Half-centurion opener Akshath Reddy made it worse for India Blue with an ungainly heave.Back to the venue where his quick innings and large-hearted bowling and fielding had willed Mumbai back to life in the Ranji trophy last season, Nayar’s quick start had already made sure India Blue didn’t stall, but at 99 for 4 he took it up a notch and converted into a counterattack. Despite his peculiar stance, Nayar pulled out some drives that looked orthodox if you overlooked the preparation to play them. He drove Varun Sood’s leg breaks against the spin through covers, and the best of his drives was off the back foot off and to the left of mid-off, off the bowling of Sumit Narwal.Nayar’s 91 off 73, supported by contributions from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Piyush Chawla, gave Delhi – a strong batting line-up even in the absence of Gautam Gambhir who is away playing county cricket – a challenging task. Forty minutes later, Unmukt Chand and Mohit Sharma – not to be confused with the Haryana quick – walked out to open the innings. Fifteen balls later, Delhi had lost two wickets, including captain Kohli, beginning what looks like Sehwag’s audition at No. 4.Sehwag made a good start to his move down to No. 4, running away to 59 off 38, but when he fell Delhi had a long way to go. A collapse followed, and they were reduced 169 for 8. Bhatia, though, refused to admit defeat, and found unlikely support in Nehra. Nehra looked comfortable at the wicket, which meant Bhatia didn’t have to farm the strike. The 55 they added came at a run a ball. However, Uttar Pradesh’s Ankit Rajpoot found a way past Bhatia’s bat with one jagged back in after pitching.Still 46 short of India Blue’s total, Delhi had some more fight left. Nehra hit a six, Parvinder Awana hung around, and the India Blue faces grew tense again. With 18 required off 14, though, Awana took an almighty swing at R Vinay Kumar and lost his off stump.

Top order shines to give Australia series

ScorecardA collective batting performance from the Australia Under-19 top order helped the side beat New Zealand Under-19 by eight wickets, as they took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.Chasing 241, the Australia openers got off to a strong start, as Matthew Short and captain Damien Mortimer added 109 runs at over six runs per over. Short struck a brisk 73 off 60 balls, which included 12 fours, before being dismissed by Rakith Weerasundara in the 18th over. After Mortimer fell in the 26th over, Sean Willis and Kelvin Smith added 101 runs for the third wicket, hitting well-paced half-centuries, to take their side home with more than five overs to spare.Earlier, Australia pace bowlers Matthew Fotia and Guy Walker took three wickets each to restrict New Zealand to 240 for 8. Walker was particularly effective against the top order, dismissing opener Weerasundara for 36 and then Shawn Hicks and captain Leo Carter in quick succession. A 77-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Henry Collier and Ken McClure revived the New Zealand innings, with Collier scoring a solid 133-ball 86. However, the loss of quick wickets towards the end of the innings meant that Australia were left with a modest total to chase.
