Gayle achieves bonus-point goal

Dwayne Bravo said the team management had sent a message to Chris Gayle to target a win with a bonus point against Sri Lanka on Friday

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jun-2013Apart from setting up a six-wicket win against Sri Lanka on Friday, Chris Gayle’s dominating innings also helped West Indies grab a bonus point – a target that Dwayne Bravo had clearly set for his opener. West Indies sauntered past the 209-run target in 37.5 overs, claiming the extra point awarded if the batting side achieved a run rate 1.25 times that of the opposition.”In the 29th over, we sent a message to Chris to try and win it with a bonus point,” Bravo said after the match. He praised Gayle for capitalising on a good start, and putting an average Champions Trophy behind him to score his first ODI century in almost a year.”It will ease pressure off him,” Bravo said. “I know, at the back of his mind, that he felt he wasn’t scoring big runs. But he knows how important a player he is for us. I am very happy that he scored a hundred again and batted deep into the innings. When Chris is in that kind of form, it’s only good for us as a team and for West Indies cricket.”Bravo also said the team had a plan to attack Sri Lanka’s inexperienced middle and lower order. Sri Lanka got off to a solid start, after being put in to bat, as Upul Tharanga and Mahela Jayawardene added 62 runs for the first wicket, but their innings never recovered after they lost the wickets of Jayawardene and Sangakkara in the space of five overs. Angelo Mathews scored an unbeaten 55, but found little support from the other batsmen.”One of their best batters is batting up the order and the other, Sangakkara, is batting at No. 3,” Bravo said. “We know their middle order and lower order is not that experienced, so we had to keep picking up wickets, that was the game plan. Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach and Sunil Narine said they’d do it for us. One can’t forget Darren Sammy’s spell. I think that killed the momentum in the Sri Lankan innings. Bowling them out for 208 was a fantastic effort by the bowlers.”The win, Bravo said, also lifted the spirits of the team after their exit from the Champions trophy following a tied match against South Africa.”In the Champions Trophy, we were not disappointed with the way we played, especially in the league stages,” he said. “We felt the way we exited the tournament was unfortunate, but as a squad we think that we did a lot of right things. That game against South Africa could have gone either way and, who knows, we could have reached the semi-finals or the final. But we take a lot of positives out of England. We were disappointed with the way that game was called off but we used it to get stronger as a group.”Bravo also backed Roach, who conceded 41 runs in seven overs and was the most expensive bowler for West Indies, and said that there was no reason to change the line-up on the basis of a few innings.”There was never an issue with Kemar’s bowling performance,” Bravo said. “In the first game [of the Champions Trophy] against Pakistan, Kemar was the bowler who got us in the position we were in. Today, he created chances and that is what we want from him. One or two bad games don’t say anything. He’s still one of our best bowlers. It’s good to have someone like Tino Best on the sidelines, that’s good bench strength for us as a team.”Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said his side’s inability to get their innings going handed the advantage to West Indies. “It was an important toss, the pitch was two-paced and holding up a bit but it got easier,” Mathews said. “We had to adapt to the pitch but we lost wickets and could not get going. Mahela batted brilliantly but he had no partners. We thought we had a chance, but the track flattened out. When Gayle gets going, no attack is enough and no ground big enough.”

Wakely knock sees Northamptonshire safe

A combination of courageous batting by Northamptonshire and bad light frustrated Yorkshire in their victory bid on the final day at Headingley

02-Jun-2012
ScorecardA combination of courageous batting by Northamptonshire and bad light frustrated Yorkshire in their victory bid on the final day at Headingley. The 11 points from the draw pushed Yorkshire into second place in the Division Two table but it was still a big disappointment for the home side that they could not sweep aside their opponents and notch a third win of the season.Northamptonshire were 250 for 6 and leading by 118 when the umpires brought the players off, despite Yorkshire having two spinners on at the time. David Murphy (31 not out) and Con de Lange (20 not out) had by then denied Yorkshire for 18 overs while adding 52 for the seventh wicket.Northamptonshire still trailed by 120 when they resumed the final day on 43 for 1 and only four had been added in almost half an hour when Stephen Peters drove at Steve Patterson and deflected the ball on to his stumps.Yorkshire had to wait for the light to improve before they dared to unleash their Australia international fast bowler Mitchell Starc but it was the introduction of offspinner Azeem Rafiq that ended a troublesome stand between Kyle Coetzer and Alex Wakely. Coetzer, having battled away for two hours for his 39, gave a bat-pad chance that was snapped up by Joe Root at short leg. There was no sign of Northants throwing in the towel, however, and Rob White helped Wakely to take the visitors in to lunch on 120 for 3. The struggle continued in the afternoon but Wakely suddenly relieved pressure on the batting side by off-driving Rafiq cleanly for six.Yorkshire needed a breakthrough and it came when their lead had been whittled down to just three runs, White bowled for 42 playing over a ball from the patient Patterson. In the same over, captain Andrew Hall put his side in the black by finding the square-leg boundary. Wakely completed his half-century with a Chinese cut for four off Starc but soon afterwards the same bowler got some lift to a delivery that left Hall and he was caught behind by Jonny Bairstow.Starc gave Yorkshire renewed hope by striking again, this time bowling the obstinate Wakely with a quick one which breached his defences. The new batsman de Lange appeared to survive a sharp return catch to Rafiq as Northants went in to tea on 205 for 6 and leading by 42 with a minimum of 37 overs remaining.Soon after the interval, Yorkshire had two chances off consecutive balls but both went begging. First, de Lange swung Rafiq wide of mid-on and Starc was unable to get into position for the catch, the ball just brushing his fingers. The batsmen ran two and then De Lange played off bat and pad and Gary Ballance could not quite hold on as he dived on to the pitch from silly point.Yorkshire took the new ball as soon as it became available but two fours off Ryan Sidebottom to the vacant third man by Murphy lifted the Northants’ lead to 70 and the draw became inevitable once the light deteriorated even further.

Rain ends Nottinghamshire's winning streak

Nottinghamshire’s perfect record in the Friends Life t20 came to a soggy end when their clash with Leicestershire was abandoned after a thunderstorm at Grace Road. The Outlaws posted 164 for 8 after being put into bat with David Hussey hitting 32 off 16 balls to go past fellow Australian Brad Hodge’s world record total of 3,690 runs in Twenty20 cricket.
But with the Foxes at 21 without loss after 2.4 overs of their reply, heavy rain followed by thunder and lightning brought an end to proceedings leaving the teams with one point each.It meant an end to Nottinghamshire’s three-game winning run to start the competition while the Foxes were also robbed of the chance to end their 10-game winless run at Grace Road. The last time the Foxes won a Twenty20 match at home was against Yorkshire in June 2009.With the pitch tinged with green Foxes’ captain Matthew Hoggard put the Outlaws into bat and left-arm seamer Harry Gurney had them rocking with two wickets in his second over. Gurney snared openers Alex Hales and Riki Wessels who both provided catches with top-edged pull shots.Hussey was soon into his stride however and a glorious straight six off Abdul Razzaq took him past Hodge’s record. Hussey then smacked Gurney for three consecutive boundaries and with Hoggard conceding 16 runs in his first over the Outlaws reached 61 for 2 off their six overs of Powerplay.Hussey and fellow Perth-born batsman Adam Voges put on 55 in five overs with the stand ended when Hussey clipped a catch to midwicket off Hoggard. Voges was then run out when Andrew McDonald deflected a straight drive by Samit Patel into the stumps and the Outlaws’ innings gradually ran out of steam.Chris Read and Steven Mullaney provided some late momentum but a superb final two overs from Razzaq, which brought him two wickets for only six runs, pegged the Outlaws to 164 for eight with only 32 runs coming from the last five overs.

Chance to experiment in dead rubber

In the five games so far, the team chasing has won all games so tomorrow’s contest offers a chance for the team batting first to get sufficient practice in case they are put in again in the final

The Big Picture

India’s inept showing in the tri-series is the main reason why the final league match tomorrow, between the hosts and Sri Lanka, is a dead rubber. What was billed to be an evenly-matched tournament, with India and Sri Lanka sending under-strength teams, has turned into a contest between just two teams. Zimbabwe’s twin victories against India upset all predictions and hence put enormous pressure on India in their final match on Saturday to not only beat Sri Lanka but by a comfortable margin to keep their chances alive. But the Sri Lankans, led by Dinesh Chandimal, oozed class and were the deserved winners. The finalists were already decided and the penultimate game is now a dress rehearsal for the final. In the five games so far, the team chasing has won all games so tomorrow’s contest offers a chance for the team batting first to get sufficient practice in case they are put in again in the final. Zimbabwe struggled against the Sri Lankan spinners in their previous game, which was a very one-sided encounter. If they can work on that area, then the two remaining games should promise to be more competitive. If they could upset India, there’s no reason why Zimbabwe can’t do the same against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka: WWLWL

Watch out for…

Since his record-breaking unbeaten 194 against Bangladesh last year, Charles Coventry has scored just one fifty. Although it’s too much to expect a repeat performance, the best he can do is show more consistency in the middle order, and prove that his blinder of a knock was no fluke. His cameo 32 was crucial in Zimbabwe’s shock win against India in the first match, but in the next two games, he scored just 11 and 20.Sri Lanka’s biggest gain against India on Saturday was Dinesh Chandimal. The wicketkeeper-batsman was initially selected for the World Twenty20 as an attacking T20 batsman, but though he didn’t make much of an impact in the Caribbean, he made the chase of 269 look ridiculously simple, smashing 111. He impressed with his shot selection, footwork and aggressive bent of mind. He looked at ease against pace and spin, and the towering sixes underlined his worth as a promising batsman.

Team news

Sri Lankan captain Tillakaratne Dilshan said after Saturday’s game that they will look to experiment before the final and try out some of the players in the bench. Batsman Lahiru Thirimanne hasn’t played a game yet so there’s an opportunity for him. One of the seamers can also be rested, in order to give Dilhara Fernando a game. Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt.), 3 Dinesh Chandimal, 4 Jeewan Mendis, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Thilan Samaraweera / Lahiru Thirimanne, 7 Thissara Perera, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Thilan Thushara / Dilhara Fernando, 11 Ajantha MendisZimbabwe’s Ed Rainsford hasn’t got a game yet. He could replace one of the spinners.Zimbabwe (possible) 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Brendan Taylor (wk) 3 Charles Coventry, 4 Greg Lamb, 5 Craig Ervine, 6 Tatenda Taibu, 7 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 8 Andy Blignaut, 9 Graeme Cremer, 10 Prosper Utseya/Ed Rainsford, 11 Ray Price.

Stats and trivia

  • Of his 75 wickets, Ajantha Mendis has 18 of those in Zimbabwe alone.
  • Zimbabwe last beat Sri Lanka in an ODI back in April 2003, in Sharjah.

Zendejas is back with the USMNT for Nations League matches against Trinidad & Tobago, with the U.S. set to face the Soca Warriors home and away for the chance to play in the Copa America.

The USMNT will be without both Pulisic and Weah, Gregg Berhalter's starting wingers, opening the door for someone like Zendejas to step in and make a statement.

Zendejas made the switch to the USMNT earlier this year, having previously earned two caps for Mexico's senior team. After some solid initial performances early in the year, Zendejas struggled a bit in the Gold Cup, failing to score as the U.S. were bounced early by Panama.

Because of that, this camp takes on added importance as Zendejas looks to solidify a place with the group ahead of a potential Copa America call-up.

Getty ImagesWHAT ZENDEJAS SAID

"Obviously, it sucks not having those two guys in because they're a huge part of the team," Zendejas said, "but I'm going to try to take this opportunity and make the most of it. I'm really looking forward to it."

"I can agree that my Gold Cup wasn't the best," Zendejas added, "but you've just got to look at the next opportunity you have."

Dessa vez, do Sub-20.

Faulkner to cover for Siddle at Lancashire

Lancashire have confirmed the signing of James Faulkner as one of their overseas players for this season, with the Australia allrounder to fill the gap left by Peter Siddle’s Ashes involvement.Siddle had been expected to play the first four months of the season, after he was dropped from Australia’s Test side, but a recall to the squads to tour West Indies and England means his Lancashire stint has been reduced to the first four Championship matches. Faulkner will then arrive to play across all formats after the conclusion of the IPL.”James is a world class cricketer and we are absolutely thrilled to bring him to Lancashire,” Ashley Giles, Lancashire’s director of cricket, said. “While he is better known at the moment for his performances in white-ball cricket his record in first-class cricket is fantastic. Having James available for all cricket is a real boost for the club and I’m certain all Lancashire cricket fans will be delighted at the prospect of watching him play at Old Trafford this season.”When we originally signed Peter we had hoped that we would get him for the majority of our County Championship campaign. When you sign high-quality overseas players there is always an unavoidable risk that you will end up losing them for all or part of the summer.”Peter is a renowned international performer with a fine pedigree and I am pleased that Cricket Australia have allowed him to play in our first four County Championship matches. It is important that we get off to a good start and his world-class experience will add a great amount of quality to our bowling attack.”Faulkner has played one Test for Australia, during the 2013 Ashes, and was a member of the side that lifted the World Cup last month, winning the Man of the Match award in the final. After completing the IPL season, where he is playing for Rajasthan Royals, at the end of the May, he will be available for Lancashire until the end of August, when the limited-overs leg of Australia’s tour begins.Faulkner said: “Lancashire is a huge county with a fine history in the game and I am looking forward to joining the squad next month. Playing in English conditions will benefit my career and I cannot wait to work with Ashley and the rest of the team.”
