Why did Arsenal and Manchester United leave it so late?

Arsene Wenger has admitted that the transfer window is a problem. The need to juggle player recruitment and the coaching of players already in-house would understandably lessen the decisiveness on at least one of those fronts, and yet Wenger is determined not to delegate absolute control over the issue of transfers to another party, no matter how much he trusts them.

It’s not really a swipe at Wenger to say he dithers on transfers, more an acknowledgement of the truth and the shortcomings of a great manager. He places faith in those he already has, and the arrival of others are often seen as a disruption rather than an enhancement. Wenger made the point prior to the North London Derby that Tottenham would experience some problems early on with such a high volume of new recruits; the Arsenal manager, on the other hand, prefers three senior arrivals at most, though that ideal went out the window in 2011.

But this summer, even with all the money available to him, it seemed as though Wenger was waiting for the perfect deal, the type of transfer that he could feel wholly comfortable with. Yohan Cabaye for £10million, Vicente Guaita for circa £5 million; going above his own valuation for a Gonzalo Higuain simply won’t do, and only when the pressure began to mount with a degree of severity did the Frenchman permit a bending of the rules to capture Mesut Ozil for £42.5 million.

[cat_link cat=”premiership” type=”list”]

It’s a manager and his ideals warring with the reality of modern football. There has to be some give from one or the other, and quite plainly, the football world is not going to hold back and appease one man.

For David Moyes and Manchester United, the troubles on the transfer front were notably different. The similarity is that both Arsenal and Moyes are new to the highest tier of the market, but that’s where the comparisons end. United’s prime summer target in Cesc Fabregas was never likely to move this year. Any hints or boosts United may have found along the way were simply devices for the player to discover his true value to Barcelona. Had the situation called for a transfer, many indications suggest that Arsenal would have been the only destination. It’s not that United can be faulted for trying, but rather that they persisted and wasted time where there was no realistic positive outcome.

The other problem, and one not of United’s own making, is that the best players simply have more clubs available to them now. PSG, Monaco, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and others are now further up the transfer ladder than they once were. It’s no longer just Manchester United and Real Madrid battling for the best; leagues around Europe are experiencing a boom, and the Premier League isn’t the only attractive destination.

With the case of Thiago Alcantara, United, if they were really in for the midfielder, lost out to a club who are far more attractive in terms of manager and in the likelihood for success domestically and in Europe. Marouane Fellaini, who always seemed to be the last resort, was held at arm’s length. United kept their interest fresh by offering bids that they knew, surely, Everton would reject, all the while scouring Europe for a midfielder who fit the bill.

The pursuit of Ander Herrera came late and was totally misguided. Athletic Bilbao are not a club who are about to be bullied. Unlike the majority of Spain, the Basque club have no tax debt, so have no need to sell. The Javi Martinez saga of last summer should have been an indication of what United should expect. Instead of offering £25 million and hoping Bilbao would cave, there should have been an understanding that, considering recruitment as one of the primary reasons, Bilbao would not settle for anything other than the player’s release clause. As Uli Hoeness put it last season, “Javi Martinez isn’t worth €40 million, but that’s the sum we had to pay. We decided to take part in the insanity for once.”And as we saw with Fernando Llorente, the club would rather let one of their players move on a free than submit to either one of their own or an outsider.

For United, Fellaini was the backup option, the player who was always available if they really wanted him but one that would be used to save face rather than address a glaring need in the midfield.

Arsenal, on the other hand, came about their best piece of business due to fortune – it’s fortunate that a player like Mesut Ozil becomes available from a club who don’t really need to sell – and the lack of any real planning. How long was Ozil a genuine target for the club? An interesting question.

What is clear is that while the financial capability is evidently there from both clubs, they’ll each need to totally master their respective new dawns. Ok, maybe no one really masters the dangerous waters of the transfer market, but some clubs do it better than others. Arsenal and United will both need to up their game in the future.

Arsene Wenger stands by his man

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that £9.6 million arrival Olivier Giroud will be a success at the club, despite being unable to open his account for the Gunners thus far.

Giroud signed for Arsenal in June after an impressive season for French Ligue 1 champions Montpellier, in which the striker was the division’s top scorer with 21 goals. However, the 25-year-old Frenchman has failed to convert numerous opportunities that have been presented to him in Arsenal’s first three matches against Sunderland, Stoke City and Liverpool.

To add more pressure to Giroud, the two other major summer signings for Arsenal Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla both opened their accounts for the Gunners in the impressive 2-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday.

Despite this, Wenger remains positive about his target man, and says he just needs time to settle down. He told The Guardian, “I am confident about him. Giroud is in an adaptation period. He has shown he is ready for a fight and I am sure he will adapt to the intensity of an English striker. Against Skrtel he discovered what the Premier League is all about.”

Giroud will be hoping he can shake the proverbial monkey off his back by getting on the score sheet against newly-promoted Southampton on September 15th.

Meanwhile, one player who has made an extremely impressive start to the season is injury-prone midfielder Abou Diaby. Diaby’s performances of late have been reminiscent of the great Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira and have harboured critics who were worried about the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona.

Wenger for one is delighted that he has stuck by Diaby, who was restricted to just four substitute appearances last season after an injury plagued campaign, “I stood behind him because he is not only a fantastic player but a fantastic guy as well. He hasn’t played for a year but now he looks in good shape.”

In regards to Diaby, Wenger will be observing the international break with bated breath as he hopes his flamboyant midfield man will remain unscathed as he turns out for France in their World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Belarus, “there is more to come but let’s touch wood and hope it goes well in the next two to three weeks because he is going away with the national team. He will travel a lot and play two games in four days.”

Arsenal fans have mixed reaction as Bellerin commits future to club

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin tells fans he is adamant he will remain at the club next season.

The Spaniard signed his first professional contract in 2013 and although the 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer, he insists he is “definitely happy at the club and will be here next season”.

“I’ve got a long contract, I have been in London for a very long time, this is what I call my home right now.

“There is nothing else I am thinking of, for the summer. We have the World Cup, I don’t know if I will be called up or not [to Spain], that is something we will need to wait and see.

“If I get given the chance then I will be really happy for it. Apart from that I am sure I will be coming back here next pre-season.”

Bellerin signed his first professional contract with the gunners in 2013 after joining Arsenal’s youth side from Barcelona in 2011. After an impressive start to his career in North London, Bellerin was rewarded with a six year contract in 2016 that sees the Spaniard take home a reported £95,000 a week.

But this season Arsenal fans have been underwhelmed with the attacking right back after a series of weak performances left supporters questioning his defensive positioning.

Arsenal fans have been vocal on social media since the player – valued at £36million by transfermarkt.com – committed his future to the club.

The Man United player sale that just doesn’t make sense

Manchester United’s playing squad has been undergoing comprehensive surgery this summer, with upgrades in a number of positions as Louis van Gaal looks to push forward with a Premier League title charge in 2015-16.

The Old Trafford outfit have addressed areas of need such as central midfield and right-back to reinforce, with every chance that the historic club will be in the hunt for top spot come next May.

However, with every new signing one of the existing players’ positions came under threat, with Matteo Darmian’s acquisition from Torino the final nail in Rafael’s United tenure.

The attack-minded right-back has completed a move to French club Lyon ahead of the new season, putting to an end a fairly underwhelming last 12 months in England for the South American.

[ffc-gal cat=”manchester-united” no=”5″]

Regarded more able and likely to make a real impression than his brother Fabio, the 25-year-old has undergone contorting fortunes in his time in England. When he has been able to stay consistently fit and available, Rafael looked like a full-back with the potential to be an ever-present for the Red Devils.

In 2012-13 the South American looked like the closest thing to a long-term replacement for Gary Neville, making 27 Premier League starts and tied down the right-back slot as his own.

However, since that injuries and a dip in form have cost him his place, with Rafael only starting 24 times over the last two seasons. Van Gaal’s appointment last summer was viewed as a fresh start for everyone at the club, with each and every player having to prove himself once more to a new manager.

But the Brazil international obviously did little to win favour with the Dutch maestro, as he was relegated to fringe status and afforded only a handful of games in 2014-15. Strangely, right-back has been an area of concern over the last 12 months for United, with the most usual incumbent in the position a right winger by trade in the form of Antonio Valencia.

Despite this, the versatile Ecuador international got the nod more times than not, while others were also played out of position to plug the gap.

Just why Rafael did not fit the mould of a player that Van Gaal valued remains to be seen, as looking at it from the outside the Brazilian has all the qualities that the former Netherlands coach wants in a full-back.

Aggressive in the tackle, solid in possession and with an enviable work-rate, Rafael looked like a player that would fit into Van Gaal’s expansive game plan.

With the Dutchman also switching between a back four and three centre-halves and wing-backs, the Brazilian’s ability to play in both systems surely should have been a virtue.

Darmian looks set to solve the issues on the right-hand side for the Red Devils, while Rafael has left the club wondering just what could have been.

West Brom must tie down stars says defender

West Brom need to tie down key duo Shane Long and Youssouf Mulumbu to longer term deals, according to Gareth McAuley.

The Northern Ireland international central defender, who picked up the Player of the Year awards at the Hawthorns following an excellent Premier League campaign, pledged his own future to the club on Friday when he signed a new one-year extension to keep him at the club until summer 2015.

And the 33-year-old has been quick to point out that the priority now is to ensure influential striker, Long, and key midfielder, Mulumbu, are tied down to deals beyond two years’ time.

Long has been heavily linked with a move away over the course of the past season, but the Republic of Ireland international has always maintained that he is happy at the club, while Mulumbu has already said he is keen to sign a new deal.

McAuley told the club’s website: “They are big and important players for us and I’m sure it will be sorted out.

“It’s like my situation. I had next year as well so there’s no rush or real pressure on it.

“But everyone will want it sorted out and the sooner it happens, probably the better it is for the lads and for the club.”

Aston Villa star baffled by snub

Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark is the latest international to publicly criticise manager, Giovanni Trapattoni’s selection policy.

Villa’s young centre back admitted to being baffled by the Italian’s continuation to over-look him for Ireland squad’s despite the fact he is Premier League regular, unlike most of Ireland’s defenders.

The 22 year old made his international debut in 2011 but has since made just one appearance being snubbed in favour of a plethora of players such as Darren O’Dea, Paul McShane and Sean St Ledger who all ply their trade in the Championship.

Speaking to ESPN the Villa defender conceded his surprise, “I have to be honest and say I have no idea what is happening for me with Ireland because the manager and his staff seemed to be very keen to get me on board at the start and now nothing seems to be happening for me.

“There are not too many Irish centre backs playing in the Premier League at the moment, so you would think that would stand me in good stead.”

His comments follow a miscalculated tweet from Ireland and Sunderland winger James McClean slamming the Italian’s decision to over-look him in favour of playing striker Simon Cox out of position against Kazakhstan.

New Zealand pair will be available alongside Dane Vilas for Blast and Championship during busy summer period

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jan-2023Lancashire have signed New Zealand pair Daryl Mitchell and Colin de Grandhomme on contracts that will cover the the Vitality T20 Blast and the start of the LV= Insurance County Championship. In a sign of the changing landscape for overseas players in the county game, Mitchell and de Grandhomme will join the squad alongside Dane Vilas, the club’s long-serving South African batter, who stood down last week as club captain but will continue to play for Lancashire this season. With only two overseas players permitted in the XI, Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, said having the trio available would “provide us with plenty of options for different matches and scenarios”.De Grandhomme, who has previously represented Hampshire, Surrey and Birmingham Bears, will link up with the club for the start of the summer, potentially playing in four Championship matches before the arrival of Mitchell ahead of the Somerset game on May 11. “We are really excited to add both Daryl and Colin to our squad and to be able to do so for such a large portion of the 2023 season – which was a key factor for us when looking to make overseas additions this year,” Chilton said.”The schedule, as it has been for the last few years, continues to be really challenging particularly in the middle part of the summer throughout May, June and July, due to the amount of cricket we’re playing in a short period. With that in mind, we want to ensure we’ve got enough strength in depth to cover for all eventualities and Daryl and Colin provide us with exactly that.”It has been a tricky process to try and add the right overseas players to our squad – in terms of both availability and quality – but I think we have found the perfect fit with two experienced international cricketers, who will bring quality to our changing room.”Colin will be with us from the very start against Surrey in the County Championship before Daryl joins up in mid-May, the pair will then both be available throughout our Vitality Blast campaign and, alongside Dane Vilas, provide us with plenty of options for different matches and scenarios.”Mitchell, who played for Middlesex in 2021 and was Blackpool CC’s professional in 2016, was New Zealand’s Player of the Series during last summer’s tour of England, when he scored 538 runs at 107.60.”I am delighted to be joining Lancashire this English summer,” he said. “The county has a proud history and having lived in Manchester as a child for a couple of years – it’s special to return in this way.”I had a taste of the Vitality Blast and County Championship with Middlesex in 2021 and I am really looking forward to trying to make contributions in both competitions for Lancashire this summer. The chance to test my skills again in two strong competitions is exciting as a player.”I really enjoy playing in English conditions and the special history of the game around the country. I have very fond memories of my two tours to England with New Zealand and hope to build more with Lancashire. It will also be great to link up with my old Blackpool team-mates Steven Croft and Richard Gleeson having played there for a summer in 2016.”De Grandhomme retired from international cricket last year and has a wealth of experience in T20 competitions around the world, playing in the BBL, IPL and CPL, as well as the Hundred in England.De Grandhomme added: “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity of playing for Lancashire this season. I’ve loved playing county cricket previously and I can’t wait to get to England in April to kick off the season with the Red Rose.”Lancashire has an exciting squad who have been so close to silverware in the last couple of years, hopefully I can help to add some experience to the dressing room so that we can go one step further this season.”Emirates Old Trafford is a world-class venue, one which I have played at before in New Zealand colours and I can’t wait to pull on a Lancashire shirt in front of the club’s members and supporters.”

Another underwhelming season appeared to be on the cards for Heat after winning just one of their first five games as they lost skipper Chris Lynn to a hamstring injury. But with Jimmy Peirson taking the reins, the rejuvenated Heat lit a fuse and headed into the playoffs as an outside title threat boosted by the dazzling return of Test star Marnus Labuschagne. Stuart Broad faces axe as England ponder Wood and Archer for first Test

Broad will miss a home Test for the first time since 2012

George Dobell07-Jul-2020English cricket could be witnessing a changing of the guard with Stuart Broad set to miss out on a place in the first Test against West Indies.Broad, a veteran of 138 Tests and taker of 485 Test wickets, has not missed a home Test since 2012, a run of 51 matches in succession. The last time he missed one – the Edgbaston Test against West Indies – he was rested with the series already won.But England, and their stand-in captain Ben Stokes, are thought likely instead to opt for the pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood with James Anderson back with the new ball after suffering injury in South Africa. Chris Woakes is the other player set to be left out from their 13-man squad.England had originally planned to name their Test team on Tuesday evening. But although it is understood the players have been notified of the final XI, the team management reasoned that, with poor weather around and the possibility a bowler could sustain an injury in the lead-up to the match, there was no need to commit to anything at this stage. If Broad is, indeed, left out, there may be a temptation to write his career obituary, but that would be premature. England are set to play six Tests in little more than seven weeks and some rotation of the seam attack is inevitable. There is a decent chance he could return as soon as next week for the second Test at Emirates Old Trafford. He could still become just the fourth seamer to claim 500 Test wickets.ALSO READ: ‘Do it your way’ – Root’s message to StokesHe has been left out before, too. At the end of 2018, he played only one of the Tests on England’s tour of Sri Lanka while he was also omitted from the side for the first Test of the series in the Caribbean 18 months ago. He demonstrated his undimmed enthusiasm for the challenge, though, by tinkering with his technique – in particular, he shortened his run-up and bowled a fuller, more probing line and length – and enjoyed personally successful series against Australia (in which he claimed 23 wickets at a cost of 26.65 apiece) and South Africa (in which he claimed 14 at 19.42). It would probably pay not to write him off now.But this is another sign that England are looking to the future. And while Broad might have struggled to retain his status as a first-choice bowler in overseas conditions, this is the first time in the best part of a decade that he has not been considered among the first-choice attack in England. It is, perhaps, also an indication that the England management are looking to Wood and Archer, in particular, as the nucleus of the attack that they feel can help them win the Ashes in Australia in around 18 months’ time. Both are blessed with sharp pace and would appear well-suited to the hard wickets anticipated in Australia. Wood also claimed a nine-for in his most recent Test – against South Africa – and took his maiden Test five-for the last time England and West Indies met. Wednesday’s first Test will be their first in the same XI.It might also be relevant that, for the first time in many months, England are blessed with a surfeit of fit, fast bowlers. By the end of the South Africa tour, England were without Anderson and Archer due to injury. Perhaps, had all been available, this decision may have come earlier.Stokes admitted on Tuesday that having five seamers fit and ready to go had presented him with “an absolute nightmare”, and said he would be “dreading” delivering the bad news to the two players that missed out.Mark Wood and Jofra Archer have yet to play a Test together•Getty Images

“You can only pick so many but it’s a great place to be,” Stokes said. “To have so many to pick from is great as a team, I’d rather be in this position. With the amount of cricket we’ve got coming in the next seven weeks I think all the guys will get opportunities. That’s a hell of a workload especially taking into consideration the time we haven’t been on the field. You’ve got to realise there’s no cricket behind anybody.”To play six Tests in seven weeks would be a huge ask for any bowler, but if we are going to rotate it’s not going to affect the standard. The guys we’ve got here are all unbelievable and they’ve all put a good case forward.”I’ve been dreading it for the last two or three days, telling the unfortunate guys. It’s not a nice conversation to think about and I can’t wait to give Joe the armband back for that reason, but that is leadership. It’s great to tell guys they’re playing but with that comes the fact that you have to deliver the bad news. It’s never nice.”Stokes also said that the prospect of Wood and Archer bowling together was “exciting”, adding that it would be difficult to leave Wood out given his “transformation” in the past two years.”The transformation of Mark Wood, more from a mental side, has been phenomenal. He’s obviously had his troubles in the past with injuries. I’m so excited with where he’s at with everything – all the worries and troubles that he would have had two or three years ago about his body seem to have just disappeared.”The skills that he possesses are very, very rare to have in a bowler. There’s been a lot of thought put into the team that we’re going to select.”England were also set to confirm that Joe Denly will bat at No. 3, with Zak Crawley at No. 4.Probable England XI for first Test: 1 Dom Sibley, 2 Rory Burns, 3 Joe Denly, 4 Zak Crawley, 5 Ben Stokes (captain), 6 Ollie Pope, 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Dom Bess, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Mark Wood, 11 James Anderson
