Newcastle eyeing one of the "biggest revelations" from Barcelona academy

Newcastle United are “in the mix” to complete the signing of a player who was described as one of the “biggest revelations” from Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy.

Hopkinson excited about Newcastle role

David Hopkinson has been appointed as the Magpies’ new CEO, in the biggest development at the club since the international break got underway. The 54-year-old Canadian has admitted that he cannot wait to get started in his new role, as he looks to make Newcastle supporters embrace him.

“I’m getting into this with both feet. This is not some sort of transactional assignment for me. This is where I intend to make my home. This is the community I intend to represent on every stage imaginable.

“The CEO role has an ambassadorial component to it and I want to be a great ambassador for Newcastle United and ultimately for Newcastle. My intention is to become an adopted Geordie here, but you have to earn that.”

The summer transfer window may be closed, but that hasn’t stopped Newcastle being linked with potential future signings, with one exciting name now thrown into the hat.

Newcastle "in the mix" to sign Barcelona rising star

Speaking to The Boot Room, journalist Graeme Bailey reports that Newcastle will be “in the mix” to sign Barcelona youngster Marc Casado in 2026.

“Casado is a really interesting name to keep an eye on heading into 2026. Newcastle do need and wanted something extra in midfield and he is someone who does appeal. It remains to be seen if he is attainable in the near future, but if he is available, then Newcastle are likely to be in the mix.

“Newcastle could get a closer look at Casado in the Champions League this season as they welcome Barcelona to St James’ Park in the Champions League later this month.”

Marc Casado celebrates scoring for Barcelona.

Casado is a big young talent with a bright future in the game, so the idea of Newcastle prising him away from Barca is a mouthwatering prospect, if they are able to.

The 21-year-old midfielder has racked up 42 appearances for the La Liga champions, registering six assists in that time, while scout Jacek Kulig hailed him as one of the “biggest revelations” during the 2024/25 campaign.

Whether Newcastle are able to entice Casado to St James’ Park remains to be seen, but if he is struggling to start regularly for Hansi Flick’s side, he may see a move elsewhere as best for his long-term development.

PIF have already signed Newcastle's new Elliot Anderson and he's "terrific"

Eddie Howe will hope he has his own Elliot Anderson now at Newcastle United in this terrific talent.

ByKelan Sarson Sep 8, 2025

At 21, he is a player with so many more years ahead of him, and he could be viewed as a long-term successor to Bruno Guimaraes at the heart of the Magpies’ midfield.

Signed for £5m, sold for 450% more: Liverpool hit gold with the original Wirtz

Liverpool’s summer has been a whirlwind of activity, both in the transfer market and on the pitch.

The reigning Premier League champions kicked off their title defence with three wins from three.

They started with a 4-2 home victory against Bournemouth, followed by a hard-fought 3-2 win away at Newcastle, and a 1-0 success at home against Arsenal before the international break.

Alongside this, Liverpool have been busy in the transfer market, bringing in reinforcements like Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Geovani Leoni, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, and Alexander Isak.

While the club invested heavily in top-tier talent, they also opted to cash in on a number of established first-team players and youth prospects.

Luis Diaz departed for Bayern Munich, and Darwin Núñez moved to Al-Hilal, leaving gaps in attack that the new signings are expected to fill.

Meanwhile, Liverpool also demonstrated strategic acumen in monetising young talent, turning promising academy graduates into substantial profits.

Selling young talent for big fees

This summer saw Liverpool secure impressive deals for their emerging stars.

Harvey Elliott joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan, with a £35m obligation to buy next summer, while Jarell Quansah departed for Bayer Leverkusen, also for £35m.

Ben Gannon Doak moved to Bournemouth for £25m, and Tyler Morton headed to Lyon for £15m.

These deals illustrate how Liverpool balance long-term planning with immediate financial prudence, often selling young players at the peak of their market value to reinvest in first-team quality.

Where Are They Now

Liverpool’s approach highlights their willingness to nurture talent in-house and then sell at the right time.

By capitalising on these transfer opportunities, the club can maintain squad balance while generating funds for strategic signings.

Liverpool’s original Wirtz is a fine example of that.

Liverpool's original Wirtz

One of the standout examples of Liverpool’s successful youth sales is Fabio Carvalho.

The 23-year-old midfielder joined Liverpool from Fulham in 2022 for just £5m, having made 44 appearances for the Cottagers, scoring 12 goals and registering eight assists.

Jürgen Klopp was a fan of the young talent, seeing in him a player with the vision and technical ability that the Bundesliga’s official website claimed was reminiscent of Florian Wirtz.

Carvalho’s time at Anfield, however, was challenging. Like Wirtz in the embryonic stages of his Anfield stay, he has struggled.

The former Fulham man made just 21 appearances for Liverpool, scoring three goals, including a dramatic last-minute winner against Newcastle, but he struggled to cement a regular starting role.

Loan spells at RB Leipzig and Hull City followed, before a permanent move to Brentford last summer for £27.5m.

The sale represented a 450% profit on Liverpool’s initial investment, showcasing the club’s ability to develop talent and sell at the right moment.

Carvalho’s statistics highlight why Liverpool’s decision to sell him made sense.

After making the switch to the Bees, he averaged 1.76 progressive carries per 90, completed 3.33 progressive passes per 90, and managed 2.37 shots per 90 with a shot on target percentage of 41.7%.

He completed 34.9 passes per 90 minutes with a pass completion rate of 70.8%, and his progressive passing distance per 90 was 86.7 metres.

His shot-creating actions per 90 sat at 1.97. While these numbers indicate promise, they also illustrate the gap between Carvalho and his elite contemporaries.

While Carvalho’s technical style was previously likened to Wirtz, particularly for his first touch, vision, and ability to turn quickly under pressure, it’s safe to say there is a seismic difference in quality.

Indeed, the German superstar enjoyed a stellar season last year with 22 goal involvements.

He averaged 5.02 progressive carries per 90, 6.74 progressive passes per 90, and 2.83 shots per 90 with 47.3% on target.

The Germany international completed 52.5 passes per 90 with a pass completion rate of 78.3% and accumulated 198.1 metres of progressive passing per 90.

He also generated 5.66 shot-creating actions per 90. The statistical comparison underlines why Liverpool opted to sell Carvalho.

Fabio Carvalho Liverpool

Wirtz clearly outdoes him in multiple attacking metrics, particularly in goal contributions, progressive play, and chance creation.

However, Carvalho’s style, combining technical vision and composure, suggests that with regular game time he could still flourish in a competitive Premier League environment, as he has begun to at Brentford.

Ultimately, the sale of Carvalho demonstrates Liverpool’s dual strategy: build a squad capable of competing at the highest level, while monetising promising academy talent to reinvest in first-team needs.

Whilst it may be upsetting to see promising talent move on, the club’s market strategy highlights a balance between ambition and smart business.

Gabba to be demolished after 2032 Olympics, cricket to get new home in Brisbane

The Queensland government has confirmed its plans for the Olympic stadium with cricket having a key stake in the outcome

Andrew McGlashan25-Mar-2025The Gabba will be demolished after the 2032 Olympic Games, and cricket will move to a new 60,000-seater stadium in the Victoria Park area of Brisbane, which will be built for the Olympics.Queensland’s premier David Crisafulli announced the latest plans for Olympic infrastructure on Tuesday, with cricket a pivotal figure in the outcome, having been impacted by the uncertainty over what the state would do after going through various proposals since being awarded the Olympics in 2021.When Cricket Australia announced its seven-year international venue allocation in 2024, the Gabba was only guaranteed international cricket until next summer’s men’s Ashes amid the wrangling over whether the ground would be redeveloped or replaced.Related

“This decision gives us certainty about venues and scheduling which in turn allows us to ensure Brisbane hosts the very best possible international and domestic cricket,” CA said in a statement. “We strongly advocated building a stadium in Victoria Park together with Queensland Cricket, the AFL and Brisbane Lions, and cricket will play a major role in ensuring this significant investment delivers long-term benefits for cricket fans and the people of Queensland.”On behalf of the cricket community we want to thank the Queensland Government for seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give the fans, the city and the state the stadium they deserve.”Cricket is returning to the Olympics for the 2028 edition in Los Angeles having only previously featured in 1900. Should it be retained for 2032, it is earmarked for Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena as well as the Gabba in what would shape as the ground’s final matches before it is knocked down.”Wouldn’t it be amazing to see the Australian cricket team win gold at an Olympic final? The Gabba’s swansong,” Crisafulli said at an event in Brisbane. The Gabba was initially set to be demolished and rebuilt for A$2.7 billion under the Labor government for the 2032 Games before that was scrapped amid a backlash over rising costs. It was then set for a $600 million facelift under Labor before those plans were also abandoned under the new government.

“The Gabba is at its end of life,” Crisafulli said. “It hasn’t been well maintained, and we do need a stadium to host this great show, and there is an opportunity for legacy play.”It became a choice between spending billions on temporary facilities and temporary stands that delivered no legacy, or securing the future of AFL [and] cricket at a new home.”Queensland Cricket welcomed the latest plans with the new stadium providing clarity over the future.”The Gabba has been wonderful venue for cricket for many years and has provided fans and players with countless memories – however the challenges the stadium faces are well documented, and we need to look to the future,” chief executive Terry Svenson said. “There is now the opportunity for Queensland to attract the world’s best cricket events, such as ICC events, men’s and women’s Ashes Series, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between Australia and India, as well has hosting the BBL and WBBL in a new purpose-built stadium. An artist impression of Brisbane Stadium in Victoria Park for the 2032 Olympics•Queensland Government”Thirty years ago this week, the Gabba was in the very early stages of its major redevelopment as the historic Sheffield Shield Final was being played, with many ensuing highlights following in the past three decades.”Today’s decision gives us certainty after many years without clarity. The Brisbane Test is the second of the series and will be a day-night encounter. While it remains uncertain what international cricket the Gabba will host after next summer, it will likely stage at least white-ball matches and could still hold Test cricket again before being consigned to rubble. There is likely to be another new international venue in Australia prior to 2032 with Hobart’s proposed stadium, which will include a roof, set to be ready by 2029 as part of Tasmania gaining an AFL team.

'I'm angry!' – Juventus coach blasts players for 'throwing the game away' in Champions League slip up against Villarreal

Juventus coach Igor Tudor expressed his fury after his side conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2 with Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Croatian coach blamed missed chances and nerves for the draw but came to the defence of his centre-backs amid criticism for their sloppiness in recent matches.

Juventus’ draw with Villareal

An acrobatic finish from Fabio Gatti helped Juventus level early in the second-half after Villarreal had taken the lead in the first through Georges Mikautadze. With the score at 1-1, Francesco Conceicao capitalised on a misplaced pass from Villarreal captain Dani Parejo, ran through on goal and slotted it past goalkeeper Arnau Tenas in the 56th minute. Just when it looked like the Italians would take all three points, former Juventus player Renato Veiga scored in the 90th minute with a header from a corner, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

In a post-match interview with , Juventus coach Tudor expressed his anger, saying: “I'm angry; you can't throw the game away in the final seconds because of a corner like that. It's disappointing because we had the game in hand.

“During half-time, I gave concrete instructions and asked them to be positive. Then Conceicao made the difference. Where did we go wrong? There's regret for not having closed it out sooner; we had two chances with [Jonathan] David and at 3-1 it would have been over. Too much frenzy and nervousness, too many simple misplaced passes.”

Finally, he accepted the shared point, adding: “We pushed hard in the second half, a great second half, they were better in the first. We'll take this point and move on.”

Tudor's defence of his backline

Juventus have conceded 11 goals in their last five games across all competitions, including seven against Inter and Dortmund. However, Tudor spoke highly of his defenders, believing they have done well and kept things from going worse.

“The three at the back are all doing well, they keep the team afloat every game,” he added: “We're a bit lacking in ball possession, we're last in this statistic. The team is there, it would be nice to play at a high level for 90 minutes, but it's not easy. We also have our weaknesses and our difficulties.”

Henriques announces retirement from first-class cricket

New South Wales captain Moises Henriques has announced his retirement from first-class cricket having stepped away from the format part way through the 2024-25 season.Henriques, 38, who played four Tests for Australia, will remain available for NSW in the One-Day Cup and has one season remaining on his current deal with Sydney Sixers who he also captains.Henriques did not feature for NSW in the Sheffield Shield since early November with Jack Edwards, who had been named the one-day captain ahead of the season, leading the side for the remainder of the campaign where NSW pushed for a place in the Shield final before finishing fourth.”I pretty much made my mind up before Christmas this year that it was time for me to stop playing Sheffield Shield cricket,” Henriques said “It was an honour to be able to lead and play for this state for so long, but playing for NSW means leading not only through words and preparation but also performances.”My body was still able, even at this ripe old age, but I just wasn’t leading by winning games of cricket for my state in the longer format of the game which I believe you have to do at this age.”We have a terrific group of younger players that will take over and move this great state forward and I will watch on with keen eyes. I’d love to thank them for providing me an environment to love going to work in.”Overall in first-class cricket Henriques made 6830 runs at 34.84 including 13 centuries and claimed 127 wickets at 30.75.As an emerging player he was touted as a future star for Australia and made 68 and 81 not out on his Test debut against India in Chennai in 2013 but did not reach double figures in his next three matches, two more against India and one against Sri Lanka in 2016.”I leave the team in great hands with Jack Edwards who took over and has showed such strong leadership already so early in his career,” Henriques said.”I want to thank Cricket NSW for their ongoing support. I’ve been a part of this organisation since I was 17 and they’ve helped me every step of the way. Twenty-one years on now, I hope to still offer my best in the shorter formats and will continue to do what I can to give back to this game that has given me so much.”New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd paid tribute to the impact Henriques has made on and off the field.”What Moises has been able to bring to NSW on the field is well documented, but it should also be recognised what he has brought to the Blues off the field over so many years,” Shipperd said.”He is the consummate professional and leader and cricket in NSW is far greater for Moises’ contribution. We saw this year in the One-Day Cup and during the BBL that he still has plenty to give, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Moises.”

B Sai Sudharsan scored yet another half-century, this time 82 off 53 balls, and helped Gujarat Titans (GT) post a healthy 217 for 6 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Ahmedabad. Speaking to the broadcaster at the innings break, he said it was a good total, given there had not been much dew until then.Earlier, after RR sent GT in, Jofra Archer once again gave his side an early breakthrough. In RR’s previous game, he had bowled Punjab Kings’ Priyansh Arya first ball. Tonight, he pegged back Shubman Gill’s off stump with the first ball of his second over. But Sai Sudharsan carried on with his sublime form. He ramped, scooped, drove and cut, and steered his side to 50 in 5.1 overs. At the end of the powerplay, he was batting on 39 off 22. Only Wriddhiman Saha (54 vs Lucknow Super Giants in 2023) has scored more runs for GT in an innings in that phase.Jos Buttler, who was welcomed to the crease with a nasty bouncer from Archer, also joined in after a slow start. He was on 12 off 13 at one point but hit four fours in his next six balls to move to 31 off 19.Maheesh Theekshana ended the 80-run second-wicket stand, off 47 balls, by trapping Buttler lbw. But M Shahrukh Khan smashed 36 off 20 to keep GT going.Sudharsan was dropped on 81 by Shubham Dubey off Archer but he could add only one more to his score. But Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan ensured GT ransacked 30 from the last two overs.

Igamane upgrade: "Phenomenal" star on his way to Scotland to join Rangers

Rangers are a complete mess right now, with their striker situation a microcosm of the entire club at Ibrox.

Danilo once again started Wednesday night’s demolition in Champions League qualifying, with Cyriel Dessers out injured and Hamza Igamane not available.

The big revelation following last Sunday’s miserable Scottish Premiership draw with St Mirren was Russell Martin’s claim that Igamane had refused to come on as a substitute at half-time, which isn’t ideal at all.

It has since been confirmed that the Moroccan has played his last match for the Light Blues, but are Rangers closing in on a replacement, who might just turn out to be even better?

Rangers' search for a new centre-forward

The reason Igamane did not want to play in Paisley at the weekend is that he did not want to risk injury, seeking a move away from the club.

Well, it has been reported that the 22-year-old is now set to secure a £10.4m move to Ligue 1 side Lille, just 12 months after arriving in Glasgow from AS FAR for only £1.7m.

This represents a more than decent return on investment, although Igamane will need replacing, having scored 16 goals last season, four of which came in the Europa League, so are the Gers close to securing their new centre-forward?

Hamza Igamane

Well, according to journalist Nil Solà, Rangers are finalising a deal to sign Bojan Miovski from Girona.

They add that the North Macedonian international ‘is already on his way to Scotland’ to complete a deal that’ll cost €3m (around £2.6m) but could rise to €4.9m (around £4.2m), just 12 months after the Blanquivermells signed Miovski for £6.8m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, will he become only the second Macedonian player to call Ibrox home, after Bajram Fetai, who made just one appearance for the club in 2004, an 18-minute cameo against Dunfermline Athletic?

Most would expect Miovski to have a slightly bigger impact!

What Bojan Miovski would bring to Rangers

Miovski will be hoping a return to Scotland revitalises his career, having really burst onto the scene the last time he was here.

After joining Aberdeen from MTK Budapest in the summer of 2022, the striker became an instant fans’ favourite at Pittodrie, scoring 44 goals in 98 appearances for the Dons.

Of these goals, four were scored in Europe, while he also netted three times against Celtic and on four occasions against Rangers themselves.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

The move to Aberdeen has also exponentially improved his international career, winning 33 senior caps, featuring in 18 of North Macedonia’s last 20 fixtures, scoring five goals in his last nine international outings.

However, his year at Girona did not go quite so well, scoring just four times for the Blanquivermells, two of which came in a Copa del Rey tie against fifth-tier Extremadura, albeit they did struggle as a team, avoiding relegation by just a solitary point, having finished all the way up in fourth the year before.

Nevertheless, Miovski is a proven striker at Scottish Premiership level, with former Celtic striker Chris Sutton labelling his performances “phenomenal”, adding that he is “capable of taking opportunities…in those big moments”.

Meantime, then-teammate Nicky Devlin asserted the he was “the best player in the league in his position”. The question though still remains, does he represent an upgrade on Igamane?

Let’s compare the duo to find out.

The table outlines some of the key similarities and differences between Igamane and Miovski.

The Moroccan is more of a creative number nine, underlined by the fact he created more big chances and registered a higher number of both goal and shot-creating actions on a per 90 basis.

The North Macedonian, on the other hand, is a penalty box poacher, taking almost 20% of his touches in the opposition’s penalty area, while mustering more shots and shots on target per game, with a higher percentage of his attempts finding the target.

It’s also worth noting that Miovski’s statistics are even more impressive when you consider he was playing for Aberdeen in one of the least evenly-balanced leagues in the world, so his goals return is only likely to increase at Rangers.

In the SPFL-era, only three non-Old Firm players have scored 16 or more goals in back-to-back top division seasons, namely Lawrence Shankland, Adam Rooney and, of course, Miovski himself, so he is surely set to score a bucket load of goals at Ibrox.

'This is not Man Utd' – Ex-Tottenham star brutally explains why Harry Kane won't leave Bayern Munich for Red Devils as he weighs up Premier League return

Gus Poyet, in an exclusive chat with GOAL, has brutally explained why there is little chance of Harry Kane ending up at Manchester United if the England captain decides to return to the Premier League from Bayern Munich. There are said to be clauses in the prolific striker’s contract that could allow him to head home in 2026, but Old Trafford is not expected to be his next destination.

  • Kane's record: Stunning strike rate of Bayern and England striker

Kane stepped out of his comfort zone in 2023 when severing ties with Tottenham. He left north London as Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer and 47 efforts short of breaking Alan Shearer’s record tally in Premier League competition. It has been suggested that Kane could look to make more history there at some point, with an impressive strike rate being maintained in Germany.

Kane has reached 102 goals for Bayern through just 105 appearances in all competitions. He is a two-time Bundesliga Golden Boot winner and saw his trophy curse lifted in 2024-25 when savouring top-flight title glory at the Allianz Arena. The 32-year-old is eager to add more medals to his collection when turning out for club and country. His contract at Bayern is due to run until 2027.

Where next for Kane after Man Utd, Arsenal & Tottenham links?

Exit fees can, however, be triggered in various transfer windows. Teams around the world are said to be monitoring Kane’s situation as they consider making moves for one of the most fearsome No.9s on the planet. Leading sides in England would be expected to head the queue if an exit door were to be nudged open at Bayern. Several potential landing spots for Kane have been speculated on.

He has generated shock talk of moving to Arsenal or Chelsea in the not too distant past, while United are long-standing suitors of the Three Lions superstar. Spurs, meanwhile, have the option to match any bids that are lodged for Kane – having included that clause in the deal which took a home-grown hero off their books.

Former Tottenham midfielder Poyet, speaking via the online casino affiliate site Casino.org, told GOAL when asked where Kane could end up: “If he goes to Man United, I won’t talk about Harry Kane anymore in my life! People talk about Man United, but this is not Man United in the last few years. He won’t go to Arsenal. The rest, I don’t know. I think people would take him back at Spurs as the player he is and the legend that he is. If he can go back and help the team in a certain way, score goals and get the record, it would be amazing. I’m not sure what will happen. Maybe he won’t go back. It’s very personal, so let’s see.”

  • State of play: The latest on Kane's future

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on the state of play when it comes to Kane’s future, with teams in the Middle East also keeping a close eye on events in Bavaria. He told : "The reality is that Spurs had a priority option clause inserted into their agreement with FC Bayern for Harry Kane; if and when Kane decides to leave, Spurs will be alerted first and the same will also happen in case other clubs decide to send proposals for the English striker.

"But nothing has started at this stage and nothing is imminent; not with Spurs or any other Premier League club, amid links with Manchester United as always since Kane decided to leave Spurs years ago. Some sources also suggest Saudi Pro League clubs are monitoring Kane’s contract situation at Bayern with two years left; but that’s it for now, as his full focus remains on the German club."

Kane has offered no indication that he is looking for a way out of Munich.
