Unbeaten 92 condemns Kent to one-wicket loss off penultimate ball at Canterbury

Matt Montgomery hit a sensational unbeaten 92 as the Notts Outlaws beat the Kent Spitfires by one wicket in a Metro Bank Cup thriller at Canterbury. The visitors overhauled Kent’s 259 for nine with one ball to spare to close on 263 for nine, after a gritty last-wicket stand by Montgomery and his final partner Dane Paterson, having still needed 35 when they came together with five overs remaining.Hamid Qadri took four for 47 but the hosts were left to rue their failure to build on a first-wicket stand of 138. Lyndon James took four for 45, as Kent fell away after openers Daniel Bell-Drummond and Ben Compton made over half their total, with 79 and 59 respectively.Montgomery, fittingly, scored the winning runs when he reverse-swept Grant Stewart for four to conclude a stomach-clenchingly tense run chase. It was a “four-pointer” at the Spitfire Ground, with Kent third in Group A and Notts needing to win both their remaining fixtures to stand any chance of qualifying, having lost their previous three. The Spitfires chose to bat in front of a crowd of over 3000 on the club’s Community Day and their openers were untroubled during a stand of 138, but for a second consecutive game they failed to really push on once that partnership was broken.Compton was the first man to go, victim of a sharp caught-and-bowled by Liam Patterson-White in the 27th over. Bell-Drummond soon followed, caught behind off Tom Loten. It wasn’t technically a collapse as the next pair of Jack Leaning and Alex Blake put on 33, but the flow of boundaries dried up and the latter was out for 11 when he cut James to Ben Martindale.James then bowled Leaning for 24 and Harry Finch was run out for nine by Haseeb Hameed chasing a non-existent single after being sent back by his partner Jaydn Denly. Denly at least broke a spell of exactly ten overs without a boundary, but he in turn was stumped for 11 after he came down the wicket to Calvin Harrison. The first six of the match didn’t arrive till the 46th over, when Grant Stewart creamed Loten over cow corner and as Kent tried a late charge James Bazley was caught and bowled by James for 15.By the time Stewart was lbw for 25 to Paterson any hopes of a 300 plus score had long since been abandoned. Qadri was caught by King for three after skying James and it was left to the last wicket pair to milk what they could off the last two overs.Scoring didn’t seem any easier when Notts were chasing. They were 66 without loss in the 16th when Ben Slater was bowled by Qadri, during a spell when they went 11.5 overs without finding the rope.In Qadri’s next over he bowled James for eight and Martindale was then run out for 38. He seemed to flinch while anticipating Compton’s throw and couldn’t ground his bat before Nathan Gilchrist broke his wicket. After a campaign dogged by injury, Gilchrist roared with joy when he bowled Hameed’s middle stump for 27 for only his second wicket of the season, in any format, and his first at Canterbury.Patterson-White was out for six after he thick-edged Qadri to Blake for six and Sam King was stumped off Parkinson for 12.When Denly bowled Dane Schadendorf for nine Notts were seven down with 79 needed butHarrison and Montgomery eroded the target with some clever running, only for the former to cut Qadri straight to Compton at backward point.Loten was then caught behind off Parkinson but Paterson played sensibly and with an over to go the target was down to seven off Stewart’s 50th over.Montgomery just blocked the first for a single and Paterson drove the second for four. A single off the third tied the scores. The fourth was a dot and Montgomery then executed a classy reverse-swept four to clinch the win.

KL Rahul, Shardul Thakur in India's World Cup squad

KL Rahul has been included in India’s ODI World Cup squad despite not having played any competitive cricket since May this year. Rahul, India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the format, is currently preparing to fly out to Sri Lanka for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup after passing a fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru on September 4.Middle-order batter Tilak Varma and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna are the two players from the current squad of 17 in Sri Lanka to have missed out, along with Sanju Samson, who is a reserve player at the Asia Cup.Ishan Kishan has retained his place as the other wicketkeeper-batter in the squad. Kishan underscored his utility by top-scoring with 82, his fourth successive ODI half-century, in India’s rained-out Asia Cup opener against Pakistan in Pallekele on September 2.Despite Kishan’s form raising the possibility of him playing as a specialist middle-order batter, the selectors also picked Suryakumar Yadav in the 15 – Suryakumar, a T20 giant, has middling ODI numbers, an average of 24.22 with two half-centuries in 24 innings, and has confessed to not quite being able to crack the 50-over game.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rahul, who last played an ODI in March this year, tore a tendon in his right thigh during the IPL and had to undergo surgery in May. He was selected in the Asia Cup squad following extensive rehab at the NCA, but was then ruled out of the first two matches after picking up a fresh niggle.”We had a couple of fitness issues that we had to look at, but all three [Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer], who had long-term injuries have come through,” India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar said in a press conference. “KL is looking good. We feel this gives us the best balance to try and do well. With KL, he was part of the camp in Bangalore, he looked really good there, has got over his niggle. He played a couple of games over the last two days. I think he kept for 50 overs and batted for around 50 overs too, so he looks good and we’re happy to have him.”Last week, Rahul Dravid had expressed satisfaction with Rahul’s recovery while also explaining that India were taking a “slightly more cautious approach” with him. Since then, Rahul has been at the NCA working with head physio Nitin Patel and had a match simulation exercise on Monday to test his level of readiness.Bumrah will lead the pace attack that includes Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami, as well as fast-bowling allrounders Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur. Kuldeep Yadav is the frontline wristspinner, with Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja the left-arm spin-bowling allrounders. The squad doesn’t have a specialist offspinner.”Clearly there will be discussions given we have both Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel who spin the ball into left-handers,” Agarkar said. “[But] both give us depth in batting. Kuldeep takes the ball away. In 50 overs cricket, perhaps you would ideally want an offspinner but this gives us the best balance. Seamers tend to bowl a lot more in ODIs as compared to T20 cricket, and perhaps you’re a little more under pressure if you don’t have an offie, so we’re happy with the guys we have.”While the deadline to submit the World Cup squad to the ICC is September 5, teams can make changes until September 28 without needing approval from the ICC. This gives India three more ODIs against Australia after the Asia Cup to give players such as Rahul and Iyer more game time. India open their World Cup campaign on October 8, when they take on Australia in Chennai.

Perfect for Amorim: Man Utd make contact to sign "special" £25m sensation

Attempting to rebuild their side in the vision of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United have reportedly made their first move to sign an impressive winger who’s valued at just £25m this summer.

Man Utd plot bargain playmaker move

The Red Devils’ financial woes are no secret these days and the summer transfer window may well reflect that. Reinforcements are undoubtedly still needed, however, and INEOS will simply have to seek any bargain opportunities they can get. Meanwhile, as that search goes on they’d be wise to clear out any unwanted stars in search of adding to their own spending power.

That could yet include the likes of Alejandro Garnacho when the summer arrives. Although the Argentine winger has worked his way back into Amorim’s side at times in recent weeks, his Old Trafford future is far from certain amid interest from Serie A giants Napoli. For the right price, it wouldn’t be a great shock to see Manchester United cash in on their young star this summer.

Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachocelebrates after the match

What that sale would do is hand Amorim the chance to finally stamp his mark at Old Trafford and perhaps welcome a player who would be perfect for his 3-4-2-1 system. According to The Boot Room, Manchester United have now made contact over signing Rayan Cherki from Lyon, asking the French club to keep them informed about the 21-year-old’s transfer status.

Valued at just £25m this summer, the young winger has quite the queue forming for his signature, which includes United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea ahead of the transfer window.

That interest should come as no surprise either, particularly from United, given that the Frenchman would be the perfect candidate to play in one of the two advanced midfield roles in Amorim’s system. A winger by trade at Lyon, Cherki has operated in the past as a No.10 and it could even be said that it is his best role.

"Special" Cherki is perfect for Amorim

Some will feel as though it’s about time that Cherki finds himself on the radar of several top sides. For some time, a top move looked unlikely to balance as questions came over his ability away from possession. Following his most impressive season yet, however, it’s hard for even the likes of Manchester United to ignore the Frenchman’s clear quality.

Dubbed a “special creator” and a “proper 10” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Cherki is exactly the type of player that would thrive in a system that not many have since Amorim’s Old Trafford arrival.

With as many as 18 assists to his name so far this season in all competitions, the 21-year-old would instantly form one of the deadliest partnerships in the Premier League next to Bruno Fernandes and all for just £25m. It’s a deal that ticks all boxes for Manchester United and one they should go all out for this summer.

Man City now willing to grant Pep request to go for £190k-p/w Arsenal star

As Manchester City look to rebuild, Pep Guardiola has reportedly personally requested that the Blues make a statement move to hijack one of Arsenal’s best players.

Man City eyeing Dias upgrade

Whilst the international break at least ceased the Citizens’ misery before they impressively earned their way into the FA Cup last four over Bournemouth, it didn’t take long for injury to strike once more. In a season full of absentees, Erling Haaland became the latest to limp off against Bournemouth and it’s bad news for the Norwegian superstar.

Following their latest injury blow, it remains to be seen whether that will be the final nail in the coffin for Manchester City’s Champions League hopes. Even if that does prove to be the case, however, they’re reportedly looking to make a statement this summer.

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are now willing to grant Guardiola’s request to sign William Saliba from Arsenal this summer in what would be one of the moves of the summer.

Not only would they be signing one of their rivals’ most influential players, but they would also be taking him out of the clutches of Real Madrid, who have been eyeing another free deal upon the Frenchman’s contract expiry in 2027.

Better than Hugo Larsson: Man City make £50m star their top summer target

He could cost Man City upwards of £50m

If the Citizens are to solve their defensive problems once and for all then signing Saliba should certainly be among their priorities this summer. Whether they’re in a position to lure the impressive centre-back away from the Gunners is another question, however.

"Superb" Saliba is one of the best

At 24 years old, Saliba is at the peak of his powers and that peak has taken him among the best in the world in his position. The Frenchman carries every trait needed to be a top defender in the modern game and represents a player that Guardiola is almost certain to love just as Mikel Arteta does at Arsenal.

Arsenal's WilliamSalibaapplauds fans after the match

Praising his star as early as his Premier League debut, the Arsenal boss told reporters in 2022: “Saliba was superb. For his age, he is built really well. You need the right balance. Physicality in this league is something where you can’t come up short. If you do, you will be exposed.”

Only getting better ever since, there’s every argument that Saliba would become Manchester City’s best defender if he completed a shock move to the Etihad this summer.

Bedingham brilliance proves just enough as Ed Barnard's 161 falls one run short for Warwickshire

High-scoring thriller comes down to final-ball scramble as Durham seal gripping victory

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Aug-2023Durham ended Warwickshire’s 100 percent record in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with an exhilarating one-run win from a wonderful, run-soaked game at Edgbaston. The match featured two brilliant centuries. David Bedingham’s 152 (108 balls), supported by Alex Lees’ 66 (77 balls) and Tomas Mackintosh (53, 47 balls) lifted Durham to an imposing 338 for eight. Oliver Hannon-Dalby took three for 54 and now has 23 wickets at 10.43 apiece in this year’s One-Day Cup.Bedingham batted beautifully but his innings was then matched by Ed Barnard who struck his maiden List A century (161, 152 balls) as Warwickshire replied with 337 for eight. Will Rhodes (66, 93) and Ethan Brookes (31, 26) helped Barnard take the Bears close but Durham’s bowlers dug deep, led by Migael Pretorius (four for 50) and Jonathan Bushnell (three for 56) who bowled the last two overs with high composure and skill.Their ice-cool nerve earned Durham’s third win of the group. Warwickshire, meanwhile, already through to the knockout phase, can still book a home semi-final if they beat Sussex at Hove on Tuesday.Put in, Durham lost Michael Jones to the fifth ball when he inside-edged Hannon-Dalby to wicketkeeper Michael Burgess. Lees then gave the innings a solid platform with stands of 55 with Scott Borthwick and 67 with Bedingham.Lees departed furious with himself when, having taken ten from successive balls from Henry Brookes, he lifted the next to mid-off. Bushnell fell first ball, to a fine leg-side catch by Burgess, and when Liam Trevaskis edged Hannon-Dalby to the keeper, Durham were wobbling at 156 for five.Bedingham and Mackintosh played with freedom and verve to add 116 in 92 balls. Mackintosh struck four fours and two sixes in his maiden List A half-century while Bedingham passed his previous best in the format (104) with a six crunched over long on off Hannon-Dalby and then hit overdrive. He crashed 40 from his last ten balls, including three successive sixes off Craig Miles.Warwickshire soon lost Rob Yates when he top-edged Pretorius to mid-off but Barnard and Rhodes added 148 in 23 overs to keep the big home crowd interested.Barnard posted his first List A ton from 106 balls but after Rhodes lifted George Drissell to long off, a cluster of wickets cranked up the pressure. Alex Davies spooned Pretorius to long on and Jake Bethell top-edged a slog at a good-length ball from Bushnell who then had Burgess caught at short third man.Barnard needed help and Ethan Brookes supplied it perfectly with intelligent, skilful batting which no doubt had a few watching home fans wondering why on earth Warwickshire are allowing such a highly talented player leave for Worcestershire at the end of the season.Barnard and Brookes added 85 in 53 balls and the latter departed caught at deep mid-wicket, with his team back in control. Forty needed from six overs came down to 20 from three. When Barnard was caught at extra cover, 15 were needed from 13 balls. Pretorius bowled Jake Lintott in an excellent over which left Warwickshire needing nine from the last. Bushnell bowled a fine last over of full length which denied the Bears the two boundaries they needed and closed out a truly memorable victory

The Catalan giants were navigating a rebuilding phase with a focus on youth and needed a manager aligned with that vision. Rangnick's Red Bull experience and emphasis on development caught Laporta's attention. Although Klopp was not hired, his name was part of the conversation, showing the high standards Barcelona were aiming for.

WHAT RALF RANGNICK SAID

In a recent interview with Ragnick said: “I told Laporta that if you want to work with young players, you have to trust them, let them play like young wolves. I mentioned Hansi Flick and maybe Klopp as well. Laporta must have remembered Flick, and that’s how he ended up with the job.”

De Kock to make his BBL debut while Brook and Crawley find new clubs

Rashid Khan was retained by Adelaide Strikers who also nabbed Hundred player of the tournament Jamie Overton

Alex Malcolm03-Sep-2023Quinton de Kock is set to make his debut in the BBL this season after being selected by Melbourne Renegades in the overseas draft while Melbourne Stars took England star Harry Brook but not before trying to poach Rashid Khan from Adelaide Strikers for the second year running. The second edition of the BBL’s overseas draft was a lot more tactical as clubs tried to fill their needs while also prising out some regulars from other clubs.Ashes stars Brook and Zak Crawley will both return to the BBL but neither with their previous club Hobart Hurricanes, with Crawley heading to Perth Scorchers. But both are likely to be unavailable for the latter stages of the tournament due to England’s Test tour of India, while there is also a white-ball tour of West Indies in December.Renegades were able to snare de Kock at pick four having gone in without a wicketkeeper on their list. He is listed to be available from December 10 to January 5 which would make it seven of Renegades’ first eight games. But that is only the case if de Kock does not play in either of South Africa’s scheduled T20I and ODI series against India which run from December 10 to December 21. Renegades also picked Mujeeb Ur Rahman to get him back for a second year running.Stars selected Rashid with their first pick, this time the first of the draft, for the second year running but Strikers were having none of it, immediately activating their retention to keep the star legspinner in Adelaide. Strikers also took men’s Hundred player of the tournament Jamie Overton in one of the biggest coups of the night and he is likely to be fully available for the 10 home and away matches to add a quality allrounder that they were missing.Zak Crawley was picked up by defending champions Perth Scorchers•ECB via Getty Images

After missing out on Rashid, Stars took Brook despite a clear need to find a high-class spinner having gone into the draft without even a domestic spinner on their list after Adam Zampa was traded to Renegades. But they made up for it later in the draft. They picked Stars favourite Haris Rauf with pick nine but added fellow Pakistan legspinner Usama Mir their last selection having thought the tall legspinner might be taken earlier in the draft.Brook wasn’t the only England Ashes star to get picked. Crawley could have been retained by Hurricanes at any stage in the first two rounds but he slipped all the way to pick 16 which forced Scorchers to make a late decision to take him having not expected him to slip that far. Head coach Adam Voges noted Crawley had the attributes to succeed on bouncy surfaces at Perth Stadium.Hurricanes looked elsewhere with their tactics as they needed a bowling allrounder. Sydney Sixers had the retention rights to both Tom Curran and Chris Jordan but could only take one of them. Hurricanes took Curran with pick three and Sixers retained him immediately. Hurricanes then took Jordan. They also picked middle-order batter Sam Hain who was not retained by Heat. Hurricanes later added another allrounder in Corey Anderson.Heat instead chose Sam Billings to ensure they got both of last year’s high-profile overseas batters back into their line-up, having earlier got Colin Munro, to cover the absences of Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne due to international duty. Munro and Billings are both ILT20 players and should be available until deep into the tournament. Heat also added English allrounder Paul Walter who they believe will be an asset at the Gabba.Sixers had a nervous wait until pick 14 to see if James Vince would be taken by another club having used their retention pick on Curran but Vince got through. They later added young England legspinner Rehan Ahmed in the last round.Sydney Thunder made a predictable selection in the first round calling out Alex Hales. They produced a surprise later, selecting Pakistan quick Zaman Khan. They also only took two overseas like Renegades and Scorchers, with the option to sign another post the draft. Scorchers took Laurie Evans with pick 17.How the draft played outMelbourne Stars Harry Brook, Haris Rauf, Usama Mir
