Phil Salt assault leads Manchester Originals to Hundred record total

Headingley witnesses feast of six-hitting as Originals keep knockout hopes alive

Manchester Originals wreaked havoc at Headingley on Sunday evening as they hammered a record score in 8he Hundred’s short history – 208 for 5 – on the way to a 23-run win over Northern Superchargers.Phil Salt and Laurie Evans mounted a blistering opening attack, scoring 94 off the first 35 deliveries including seven sixes and nine fours as they obliterated the Superchargers bowling. The home side clawed their way back into contention after the opening blitz but Tristan Stubbs and Paul Walter saw Originals to only the competition’s second total of 200 or more with 16 maximums, taking their side past the record number of sixes hit in an innings with ease.Superchargers couldn’t match the demolition job of the Originals batters and despite Adam Hose’s best efforts in scoring 59 off 27, he could only lift his side to a total of 185 for 7.In a new-look opening partnership in the absence of captain Jos Buttler who sustained a calf injury last time out, Salt and Evans set about causing mayhem from the off. Salt climbed into David Willey hitting him for two boundaries in the first set. After Salt was dropped by Dwayne Bravo on 15, a difficult high chance that just slipped through his hands near the boundary edge, Evans punished the allrounder by hitting him for four consecutive boundaries and finishing with a six into the crowd over deep midwicket. With the Superchargers’ bowling attack rapidly falling apart after Salt bludgeoned Adil Rashid for three consecutive sixes, captain Faf du Plessis called an early timeout to attempt to regain control. The tactic worked with first Evans holing out to Harry Brook at long-on for 45 off Bravo, then Salt caught out in the same area off David Wiese for 55, Brook taking a superb catch diving forwards full length.A period of calm followed for the Superchargers with Rashid finding his rhythm to limit the flow of boundaries, Andre Russell in particular finding it hard to score. The momentum switched once again when Stubbs decided to tee-off, scything boundaries off first Craig Miles and then Wiese, the latter picking up the most expensive bowling figures in the competition’s history with 53 coming off his 20.After Stubbs was caught from a Bravo slower-ball for 46 off 23, Walter’s 26-run cameo finished the innings for Originals and left Superchargers with a monstrous chase of 209.Despite Adam Lyth getting the innings off to a good start, repaying Stubbs for some of the treatment he dished out while batting by hitting him for a boundary in the first set, the chase rapidly lost momentum for Superchargers, who themselves had posted 200 for 5 in winning last year’s fixture here.Lyth whacked two sixes and five fours in his 46 off 24 but couldn’t repeat the feats of the openers earlier in the day. When Walter picked up two wickets in two balls, first Lyth caught at mid-off and then Brook first ball caught at deep backward square, the result looked a near-formality.Late thrills from Hose, who scored a boundary-fuelled 23-ball fifty, and sixes from Wiese kept the crowd cheering late into the evening, and Originals were hampered by missing the cut-off and being required to have an extra fielder in the ring for the last 11 balls – but Superchargers always looked like falling short. The result ends their eliminator hopes with Originals still in contention.

Only 23% duels won: Liverpool’s 4/10 flop was even worse than Elliott

Up to this point, Arne Slot’s Liverpool hadn’t really shown visible chinks in their armour, with an EFL Cup final on the horizon and a top spot in the Premier League very firmly in their grasp.

However, after Sunday afternoon’s disastrous trip to Devon, the Reds will be concerned about the strength of their full squad, as a much-changed Liverpool side crashed out of the FA Cup 1-0 to lower league opposition Plymouth Argyle.

Slot will be disappointed with a whole host of his reserve faces after this crushing defeat on the road, therefore, particularly when it comes to the lacklustre showing of Harvey Elliott, who gifted the Pilgrims the golden penalty that sealed their gigantic Cup upset.

The 9 greatest FA Cup upsets of all time

The FA Cup is famous for its giant-killing moments, but which are the greatest upsets in the competition’s history?

ByBarney Lane Oct 31, 2024 Harvey Elliott's performance in numbers

Indeed, this would have been viewed as a big opportunity for Elliott to prove that he belongs in his manager’s main team selections moving forward, having made zero starts in the Premier League this season under the Dutchman.

Instead, the ex-Feyenoord boss will feel even more fixed in his ways that Elliott isn’t worthy of regular minutes in his first XI, with an obvious handball early into the second half allowing Ryan Hardie to be Plymouth’s hero from the spot.

Away from this horror moment at Home Park in isolation, the 21-year-old never looked comfortable all afternoon long, with possession given up a costly 20 times by the out-of-sorts number 19, as the well-drilled hosts were constantly awarded ways into the game to pull off a shock win.

Whilst Elliott’s handball will steal the majority of the headlines about where Liverpool went wrong, there were far worse performers from a Reds perspective, with a limp attacker for the away side really struggling to get going against the Championship’s basement outfit.

Chiesa's performance in numbers

Federico Chiesa was in the exact same boat as his midfield teammate heading into this contest in Devon, with the Italian having to make do with the odd bench appearance here and there in league action.

For a talent that was once named in the Serie A team of the season, it was slightly embarrassing to see how little he could offer against a team that sat rock bottom of the second tier, regardless of how well organised and dogged the hosts were.

He was way off his scintillating best in Italy playing at Home Park that’s for sure, with the numbers above making for some grim reading as Chiesa failed to hit a single on-target effort at Conor Hazard’s busy net.

Described as “atrocious” by one Reds content creator, the underperforming 27-year-old also only managed to complete one successful dribble from ten attempted, throw away possession a colossal 29 times and further added insult to injury by winning just 23% of his duels on the day.

Therefore, it wasn’t a great shock to see Chiesa receive some pelters after the famous FA Cup clash was over, with Daily Express journalist Amos Murphy handing out a 4/10 rating to the ex-Juventus man, stating that Slot ‘would’ve wanted more’ from a player who has shown his class on the big occasion previously in his career.

In the here and now, he floundered unfortunately, with the Reds number 14 now firmly chucked back into the reserve picture after such a drab performance.

Whilst Plymouth will still be celebrating this mammoth victory for many days to come, Slot will hope he can put this one down as a bad day at the office for his side before then returning to winning ways, with the Dutchman now well aware that his full squad can’t cut it when thrust into the spotlight.

Better than Sesko: Arsenal want to seal late move for "world-class" star

Arsenal have been frustrated once again in their pursuit of a new striker this month, with the club unable to land any of their targets with just a couple of hours left in the window.

Mikel Arteta has constantly been on the hunt for a new talisman to try and aid the Gunners’ chances of catching Liverpool before the end of the season, ending their two-decade wait for a Premier League title.

However, the Spaniard has been unable to identify a player to lead the line, offering that focal point that Kai Havertz has often been unable to do in recent months – as seen with his glaring miss against Manchester City.

Deadline Day

Undoubtedly, the supporters would be delighted if they could land a new forward before tonight’s deadline, but it makes sense not to force anything and just land a player for the sake of it.

However, they haven’t given up hope in landing one player after previously making their interest clear in landing the talent over the last couple of weeks.

Arsenal still interested in a late move for attacking star

According to The Independent, Arsenal are still considering another approach for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins on Monday evening after their first offer was rejected.

It was reported that the Gunners were interested in completing a deal at around the £40m mark, but Unai Emery’s men stood firm on their £60m valuation of the England international.

However, the report claims that the aforementioned fee could be enough to secure a late deal for the 29-year-old, with Villa close to PSR limits, which could aid Arsenal’s pursuit of Watkins.

Villa have lost Jhon Duran to Saudi in recent days, but deals for Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio have boosted their ranks – potentially opening the door for Arteta to make another bid for the lifelong Gunners supporter.

It could allow them to forget about another player who’s appeared on their shortlist in recent weeks, with the Englishman offering the club a better option than the youngster.

Why Watkins would be better than Sesko for Arsenal

Benjamin Sesko is a player who’s constantly been monitored by Arsenal over the last couple of years, but as of now, he remains an RB Leipzig player.

This month has been no different, with the Slovenian international once again appearing on the club’s shortlist as they searched for a new number nine.

However, the Bundesliga outfit were demanding a huge £67m for the 21-year-old, which would undoubtedly be a massive risk given his tender age and lack of Premier League experience.

It would be an addition which could set the club up for the long-term, but ultimately, given the time without a league title at the Emirates, immediate success is needed, with Watkins able to produce just that.

When comparing the Villa ace to Sesko for the 2024/25 campaign, he’s massively outperformed the RB Leipzig man in numerous key areas, showcasing why he’d be a better fit for the Gunners before tonight’s deadline.

Watkins, who’s previously been dubbed “world-class” by broadcaster Jack Grimse, has registered more combined goals and assists than Sesko, whilst also registering more shots on target per 90 – highlighting his added clinical edge.

He’s also completed more of his attempted passes, registering more key passes per 90 – subsequently aiding other attackers in the final third and helping them improve their own goalscoring tallies.

The Englishman would be a better fit for the current possession-based philosophy in place at the Emirates, offering Arteta that immediate option to chase down Arne Slot’s side.

With time running out in the window, the Gunners will have to act quickly to make a move for the talisman, with his potential addition arguably the difference between a title fight or not come the end of the season.

Big upgrade on Grant: West Brom keen on signing "powerful" Maja replacement

Tony Mowbray was handed a rude awakening back in the hot seat of football management away at Middlesbrough on Tuesday night as his new West Bromwich Albion side fell to a dire 2-0 defeat.

It was a flat display from the Baggies at the Riverside Stadium who could only muster up one big chance being created all evening, with the quality of Ben Doak towards the close of the contest eventually securing Michael Carrick’s men all three points.

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

Mowbray could well want to add more quality to the attacking ranks after seeing his new team draw blanks on the road, with this striker reportedly on their agenda.

West Brom interested in signing new forward

This has been a promising transfer window for a number of promotion chasers so far, notably Sheffield United who have welcomed Ben Brereton Diaz & Tom Cannon through the door.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, what is West Brom’s response? Well, as per Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, the promotion candidates are considering a loan move for St. Gallen star Willem Geubbels this January in order to give them another standout option up top.

The Baggies are not alone in this pursuit, however, with the 23-year-old attacker also being eyed up by fellow Championship outfits Leeds United and Norwich City.

This will be an area that West Brom will be desperate to improve in, especially when you consider usual first-team ace Josh Maja – who has 12 second-tier goals next to his name – is now sidelined for the foreseeable owing to a leg injury that requires surgery.

What Geubbels can offer West Brom

It would be a wise decision to try and snap up Geubbels before the close of the hectic transfer window, with the ex-Olympique Lyonnais youngster perhaps an upgrade on what Mowbray already has at his disposal – away from any lingering injury issues – in the form of Karlan Grant.

After all, Grant hasn’t always found his time at the Hawthorns to be a walk in the park.

Indeed, before becoming a first-team regular this season, the former Huddersfield Town man had found himself chucked out on loan to Cardiff City, with a lacklustre three goal return managed during the 2022/23 campaign in the Championship signalling his switch to the Bluebirds.

He has managed to breathe life back into his playing days in the West Midlands when looking at the table above, but his spot could soon be taken up by Geubbels’ arrival onto the scene, with the 23-year-old managing to match and surpass a few of Grant’s numbers this season playing out in Switzerland.

With a further three strikes coming his way away from league action, the Frenchman ends up bettering Grant’s output overall in all competitions, with two of his goals even coming in the UEFA Conference League.

Capable of playing down either wing too, much like Grant, the “powerful” attacker – as he has been described by The Rangers Journal – does feel like an improvement on the West Brom number 18 as competition for spaces in Mowbray’s starting lineup heats up.

The 61-year-old will hope his new potential recruit can lead the line effectively until Maja’s return, as the Baggies are clearly missing their injury-stricken star man dearly with only one strike across their last three Championship outings.

That’s where Geubbels will hope he can be of use as a short-term purchase, as Mowbray goes about leaving his lasting mark back at the helm.

'I wasn't surprised' – Arne Slot admits Arsenal slip-up was no shock to him as Liverpool prepare for Premier League title party

Arne Slot was not surprised to see Arsenal held in a game he felt epitomised the Premier League and put Liverpool on the brink of the title.

Slot was not expecting Arsenal to drop further points in the Premier League title race in midweek, but, watching the Gunners’ game with Crystal Palace, the Liverpool boss said he was not surprised to see the Eagles take a share of the spoils to put the Reds on the brink of a record-tying title.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool now lead the title race by 12 points with five games to play and have a game in hand on Arsenal. The Reds will win the league with a point against Tottenham on Sunday. Arsenal drew 2-2 with Palace at Emirates Stadium, a game in which they were twice pegged back after taking the lead. For the Gunners, the focus has long since turned to trying to win the Champions League, but Slot felt the game summed up the Premier League and its quality.

WHAT SLOT SAID

Slot revealed Liverpool watched the game together, telling a press conference: "It was different. Normally when you watch a game of football, you are either alone or with family or friends. But we watched it all together.

"Before the game, I would have been surprised if the game ended in a draw. But during the game, I wasn't because Crystal Palace again showed what this league is all about. It was a very good performance from them as a team and there were a few very good individual performances as well."

Liverpool will be eager to make up for lost time, having not been able to celebrate the league title they won during the pandemic with fans because of the restricitons in place. Slot, though, knows they cannot simply approach Sunday’s game ready for a party.

"First of all, that's a big responsibility because we are aware of the fact that the last time this club won the league it was Covid time,” Slot said. "So, everybody is looking forward to Sunday but we know there is still a job to be done, at least one point. That's what we know and hopefully our fans know as well when they come to the stadium, that they support us in the best possible way they can – which is what they have done the whole season – and are aware of the fact that we still need a point.

"That's something we are definitely aware of here inside this building. So, it's a nice game to look forward to but it's also a responsibility we have for Sunday.”

Their answer to Kane: Arsenal target loan move for future £100m "superstar"

This season has been a trying one for Arsenal and their fans.

Mikel Arteta’s side have endured questionable decisions, a brutal fixture list, and a seemingly never-ending list of injured first-team players, yet they remain second in the Premier League.

Moreover, while Liverpool must now be considered overwhelming favourites for the league, there is still a chance, albeit an incredibly slim one, that the Gunners could chase them down over the next 16 games.

However, to do that, the board will need to sign some attacking reinforcements this month, so it’s fortunate that recent reports have linked the club to a young striker who was winning comparisons to the sublime Harry Kane just a couple of years ago.

Arsenal target striker prospect

According to a recent report from journalist and transfers expert Ben Jacobs, Arsenal are “assessing striker options for January.”

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

One of the players who’s “of interest” to the Gunners is Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Evan Ferguson, but only if the south coast club sanction his exit.

If he is to be made available, the North Londoners would have to sign him on a permanent deal or send Neto back to Bournemouth, as Premier League clubs can only have two players on loan from other teams in the league at one time, and Raheem Sterling’s loan from Chelsea does not include a break-clause.

In all, signing Ferguson – who has been rated as highly as £100m – might not quite be what fans are hoping for this window, but the youngster has shown that he’s capable of scoring in the top flight and was winning comparisons to Kane just a couple of years ago.

How Ferguson compares to Kane

Okay, so before we take a look at some of the other reasons why Arsenal might want to sign Ferguson this month, let’s examine these comparisons to Kane and where they come from.

Well, one of the more notable claims of the Irishman’s similarities to the England captain came from former Liverpool striker John Aldridge, who in March 2023 described the then 18-year-old striker as “an Irish version of Harry Kane.”

Later that year, former Spurs star Gary Lineker suggested that the club should sign the Seagulls ace “as Kane’s replacement,” which is mighty high praise from a poacher as esteemed as the England legend.

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.

With all that said, the main thrust of these comparisons to the Bayern Munich marksman is also the other reason why the Gunners are likely considering him this month: his output from a couple of years ago.

For example, in the 22/23 campaign, the £30k-per-week forward found the back of the net ten times and provided three assists in just 25 appearances, totalling 1345 minutes, which comes out to a goal involvement every 1.92 games, or every 103.46 minutes.

However, even more impressive than that, he matched Wayne Rooney’s best tally of 11 league goals in a calendar year, although his average of one every 143 minutes was significantly better than the Englishman’s average of 175 minutes.

Now, the Seagulls star has struggled to match that level of output since, but he suffered two significant injuries last season, and as he’s still just 20, there is plenty of time for him to develop into the goalscoring “superstar” former professional Danny Murphy claimed he was two years ago.

Ultimately, it might not be the transfer fans are hoping for at the moment, but Arsenal are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, and if Ferguson can show even some of the form he did prior to his injury setbacks, then Arteta will have a brilliant option to call upon, and should they opt to sign him on a permanent deal, then he might just become the Gunners own Kane.

Wolves now also in surprise deadline day talks to sign "infectious" player

Wolverhampton Wanderers are making a deadline day move to sign an “infectious” player, as they continue their busy end to the transfer window, according to a reliable reporter.

Wolves transfer news

The Old Gold are working on several deals as the deadline approaches, as Vitor Pereira tries to make sure his squad is fitted with enough quality to beat relegation to the Championship.

Wolves could be in for a busy end to the January transfer window.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 3, 2025

It was reported before deadline day by Fabrizio Romano that Wolves are chasing a deal to sign Dynamo Kyiv ace Volodymyr Brazkho. The Premier League side have made an offer for the player worth £16.7 million, and Brazkho is keen on moving to England and the Premier League. However, there have been no developments on that potential deal, with Wolves concentrating on other signings.

It was reported earlier on Monday morning that Wolves had made a “crazy offer” to sign Marshall Munetsi from Stade de Reims. Now, in a further update from Sky Sports, the Premier League side have agreed a deal in principle to sign Munetsi, with his medical now set to take place in the afternoon. But they have not just agreed a deal to sign Munetsi; the Midlands side have also agreed a deal to sign Nasser Djiga from Red Star Belgrade. The defender is now going to meet Wolves officials in France and undergo a medical before a deal is completed, meaning Wolves sign both a defender and a midfielder as they wanted to do.

Wolves now in deadline day talks to sign "infectious" player

However, Dija is not the only defender who could arrive at Molineux today, as according to reliable reporter John Percy of The Telegraph, Wolves and Leicester City are in talks over a surprise swap deal involving Conor Coady and Craig Dawson.

Percy goes on to add that a deal isn’t agreed between the two clubs yet, as discussions are at an early stage, but if it goes through, it would be a straight swap deal, Coady moving back to Molineux and Dawson going to the King Power Stadium.

Coady, who has been labelled “infectious” by Gareth Southgate in the past, joined the Foxes in August 2023 after their relegation to the Championship. The centre-back played just 12 games as Leicester won the Championship title to secure promotion. This season has been more effective for Coady, as he’s played 10 games in the Premier League, eight of which have come as starts, and they have all come in the last 12 games.

However, the 31-year-old has been on the bench in three of the last four games under Ruud van Nistelrooy, as he’s preferred Wout Faes and Jannick Vestergaard. Therefore, a move this month makes sense, and returning to Wolves seems ideal for the player, as he had some excellent seasons with the Midlands side.

Coady could join Toti, Emmanuel Agbadou, Santiago Bueno, Yerson Mosquera, and Bastien Meupiyou as Wolves’ centre-back options should he sign for Wolves, and given his experience and leadership qualities, he may well be a main starter in Pereira’s side.

Minor abdominal injury to Ferguson depletes New Zealand further for tri-series

A minor abdominal injury to fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has depleted New Zealand further in the ongoing T20I tri-series, involving Pakistan and Bangladesh. The hosts are already without allrounders Daryl Mitchell, who has been sidelined from the entire tri-series with a fractured finger, and Mitchell Santner, who will join the squad on Sunday after his paternity break.Given Ferguson’s history of injuries – he had also been ruled out of last year’s T20 World Cup with a calf tear – New Zealand will have to manage him carefully in the lead-up to this year’s T20 World Cup. Head coach Gary Stead has said that there’s a chance that Ferguson too might miss the entire tri-series.Related

  • Mitchell in doubt for T20 World Cup with fractured finger

  • Ferguson ruled out of 2021 T20 World Cup with calf tear

“Lockie has a little ab injury at the moment. We’re just managing just that and the most important thing is we get to the start of the World Cup and Lockie is ready to go,” Stead said. “He’s a very, very important cog in our bowling line-up. Unfortunately for him, he missed last year’s World Cup with the injury he had then. I mean we are mindful of it and we want to make sure that he’s right and ready for those early games in the World Cup.”There is that chance [of him missing the entire tri-series]. We will just see how he responds to treatment over the next few days.”New Zealand’s other priority is to get Adam Milne fully fit ahead of the global tournament. Milne, who is also injury-prone, is working his way back from a persistent Achilles injury that forced him to miss the Hundred earlier this year. His last competitive game was in March when he made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings. On Saturday, New Zealand picked Blair Tickner ahead of Milne.”It’s the first time I’ve had eyes live on Milne at the nets and he looked really good,” Stead said. “We’re pleased with what we are seeing there and again he is coming off a reasonably extensive injury break as well, so just managing him and making sure he’s right will be the most important thing for us in these four games.”Daryl Mitchell’s presence would lend balance to New Zealand’s XI•Getty Images

Mitchell hopes to be fit for T20 World Cup
Mitchell, who was hit on the little finger of his right hand while batting in the nets on Friday, is hopeful of recovering in time for New Zealand’s World Cup opener against Australia at the SCG on October 22.”Obviously, not ideal timing but we’ve got some good news around where the fracture is in the hand and the time frame to be ready for the first game in Australia in a couple of weeks’ time,” Mitchell told Spark Sport on the sidelines of New Zealand’s tri-series opener against Pakistan on Saturday. “We’ll do everything we can to try and be ready and fingers crossed that I’ll be good to go.Dane Cleaver, Kane Williamson’s cousin, who had hit 83 against India A in a one-dayer in Chennai last month, has been named as Mitchell’s replacement for the tri-series. Cleaver will also be the back-up wicketkeeper to Conway although Finn Allen has also occasionally done the job for his domestic side Wellington Firebirds.
