'Especially not at Arsenal' – Shock Harry Kane transfer ruled out as Tottenham record breaker is backed to 'hoover up trophies' at Bayern Munich & shun Premier League interest

Harry Kane will "hoover up trophies" at Bayern Munich, says Emmanuel Petit, with a Premier League return – "especially at Arsenal" – being ruled out.

There has been talk of the England captain opening himself up to a summer transfer in 2025. It has been reported that release clauses were included in the deal that Kane agreed when moving to Germany from Tottenham in 2023.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane is yet to break his trophy duck with Bayern, but that is expected to happen before the current campaign comes to a close. At that point, the 31-year-old may decide that he wants to head home and chase down Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record.

WHAT EMMANUEL PETIT SAID

Various potential landing spots are being speculated on, from Old Trafford to Emirates Stadium, but World Cup winner Petit cannot see the prolific No.9 back in north London. The ex-Gunners midfielder told : “I don't think Harry Kane will ever play for Arsenal! We all know why he left Spurs, he didn't win any silverware with the club.

“He's such a huge striker. He’s up there with the best 9’s in the game. He’s demonstrated that throughout most of his career and he’s been brilliant at Bayern Munich since he joined the club. He's scoring goals every single weekend.

“He left his club, Spurs, to win trophies, and he’ll do that this season. Why would he want to return to the Premier League in the summer or the January window – I just don’t see why he would come back, and especially not at Arsenal with the history that he has. He's having a really good time over there. He's got a great chance to win the Bundesliga. He's still involved in the Champions League.

“If he returns to the Premier League, the only reason would be to break Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record. If he joined Manchester United, or if he went back to Tottenham, even Arsenal, there would be no guarantee that he would win silverware. He’s virtually guaranteed trophies at Bayern. He’s getting older, the clock is ticking, I suspect that he wants to hoover up as many trophies as he can with Bayern.”

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR HARRY KANE?

Kane’s strong ties to Spurs, where he is the club’s all-time leading scorer, make a transfer to Arsenal almost impossible. Manchester United’s recent struggles would also appear to rule them out of any bidding war, meaning that the modern-day legend is likely to work through at least one more year of his contract at the Allianz Arena.

Their answer to Haaland: Arsenal set to bid for "monstrous" striker

Arsenal are stuttering this season and not making the most of key chances in which they could catch current Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners have now drawn their last two games, against Fulham who have impressed this term, and relegation strugglers Everton, finding themselves six points behind the Reds.

It has certainly been a frustrating time for Mikel Arteta’s side, who have not really found their rhythm in recent weeks. They have become almost too focused on set-pieces, and have struggled to create much from open play.

It has been a real issue for Arteta and his coaching staff, but perhaps there needs to be another striker aside from Kai Havertz, and have been linked with someone ahead of the January window.

Arsenal target Serie A striker

The player in question here is Juventus centre-forward Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbian striker has impressed this term for the Old Lady and has now been linked with a potential move to the Emirates Stadium in January.

At least, that is according to a report from CaughtOffside, who say that Arsenal think Vlahovic ‘would be the perfect striker’ for Arteta’s current squad and that they ‘are set to make a move’ for the forward.

However, they will not be alone in their chase for the Serb. Premier League rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City are all interested, with French giants Paris Saint-Germain also linked.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In terms of the price of the 24-year-old striker, the report from CaughtOffside suggests he’ll cost upwards of £58m. That would see him become the Gunners’ fourth most expensive signing of all time, as per Transfermarkt.

Why Vlahovic would be a good signing

Although it would be a costly investment for the Gunners, there is no doubting what Vlahovic could bring to their squad; goals. It is something they have struggled with this term, scoring 29 times with an expected goals tally of 34.24xG, underachieving by 5.24 goals in total according to Understat.

Lucky for Arteta’s side, Vlahovic has a knack for scoring and could be the man to help fix their problems. He has 11 goals from 19 games in the Serie A and the Champions League this term, which is more than any Arsenal player across competitions.

He recently scored against Manchester City, finding the back of the net once in a 2-0 win at the Allianz Stadium. It was exactly the kind of goal that would go down well with the Arsenal faithful, a striker fighting for the ball in the penalty area, winning a header in and firing home. A proper centre-forward’s finish.

There are certainly comparisons that can be made between Vlahovic and his opposite number at Man City, Erling Haaland. The Norweigan has been the bane of Arsenal’s problems over the past few seasons, as they failed to conquer the dominant Cityzens in the title race. He’s scored 76 Premier League goals in just 81 games so far.

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City

With that in mind, they could be set to bring in a striker who is statistically similar to the City number nine via FBref. Firstly, it is worth noting that the Juve man has played the equivalent of 12.8 full 90 minutes this term, but Haaland has played slightly more, with 15 full 90-minute games.

In terms of the numbers, the pair are extremely close when it comes to expected goals per 90 minutes. Vlahovic is averaging 0.72 xG and Haaland slightly more with 0.86 xG. Arsenal perhaps need someone who can fashion chances from nowhere. Juve’s striker averages 1.95 shot-creating actions per game, and the City centre-forward slightly more with two.

Signing Vlahovic could be exactly the signing Arteta’s side needs to turn his season around. They will be desperate to make up the points on Liverpool and catch Arne Slot’s side, and the striker, described as “monstrous” by football statistician Statman Dave, could be the man to help them reach the summit of the Premier League.

England docked two WTC points for maintaining slow over rate at Trent Bridge

In all they have lost 10 points to over-rate offences in the current WTC cycle

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jun-2022England have been docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points and their players have been fined 40% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over rate in their epic win in the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. This adds up to a total of 10 docked points for the side in this WTC cycle; they had lost eight points during the second Ashes Test in Brisbane last year.Related

Go, Jonny go. And just keep going

The hosts were ruled to be two overs short, after allowances were taken into consideration, by the on-field umpires Michael Gough and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Martin Saggers. Captain Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the offence, with match referee Richie Richardson imposing the sanction without the need for a formal hearing.England’s WTC points tally had risen to 42 after their win, before coming back down to 40. Importantly, their points percentage – the key criteria in determining where teams sit on the WTC table – fell from 25 to 23.80, putting them at eighth spot on the WTC table – behind New Zealand.England had scripted a stunning victory at Trent Bridge, with Jonny Bairstow and Stokes putting on a dominating 179-run stand to help chase down 299 on the last day, having been reduced to 93 for 4 at one point. Bairstow blazed his way to 136 off 92 balls, his 77-ball hundred falling just one ball shy of England’s 120-year-old record for their fastest Test century. Following Bairstow’s dismissal, Stokes and Ben Foakes guided England home, the highest successful Test chase at Trent Bridge. Stokes remained unbeaten at the close with 75 off 70 balls. In accordance with the ICC’s rules relating to over-rate offences, players are fined 20% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. Madrid manager Ancelotti was asked if he was concerned about the 18-year-old's lack of game time this season. The Italian gave an emphatic response to that, while opening the door to a start against Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey this week.

    WHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID

He told reporters on Monday: “Who’s worried? I don’t know. I’m delighted with him. I’ve given him minutes whenever I can, and he’s always taken advantage of them. Is he concerned? I don’t know. He has a chance to play tomorrow. I’m considering playing him. It depends on many things. Beyond competition, nothing is missing. It’s a matter of competition. There are players who are extremely high quality. I think the history of this club shows that many starters have sucked it up on the bench for a long time. Vinicius, for a couple of years, Rodrygo, Valverde, Camavinga. If you want to be at Real Madrid, you have to suck it up on the bench for a bit.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

There was a great deal of hype when Endrick, who joined from Palmeiras for a fee that could rise to €60 million (£51.6m/$65m), arrived at the Spanish giants but so far he has made just four starts in 28 appearances. The Brazilian gave Madrid a semi-final first-leg lead in the Copa del Rey last time out and he may get another opportunity to shine against Real Sociedad in the reverse fixture. But it is clear he will have to be patient as there are some great players ahead of him in the pecking order.

Amazon pulls out of race for IPL media rights for 2023-27 cycle

The seven final bidders comprise Disney Star, Sony, Viacom-Reliance, Zee, Fun Asia, Super Sport and Times Internet

Amazon has pulled out of the race to own the media rights to the IPL for the next five years. ESPNcricinfo has learned the global e-commerce giant is not among the final list of seven bidders participating in the e-auction on Sunday to decide who will get to broadcast one of the most lucrative tournaments in the cricket calendar.Amazon has been a lead player in acquiring lucrative streaming rights across global sports and was expected to bid aggressively for the IPL’s digital rights packages. In 2021, the company struck a billion-dollar-a-year deal (for 10 years) to broadcast just 15 Thursday night matches in the National Football League in the USA. Their withdrawal will be a blow to the IPL.It is learned that the decision not to pursue the media rights was made by Amazon’s top brass in the US and that it was communicated to the IPL on Friday – the deadline for bidders to submit their paperwork. With Disney-Star, Sony, Viacom-Reliance, Zee, Fun Asia, Super Sport and Times Internet still in the running, the number of bidders this time is exactly half that of the previous auction, when 14 companies vied for the broadcast rights of the IPL from 2018 to 2022. Star India beat all comers with a record bid of $2.55 billion in the global consolidated category (TV and digital for India and rest of the world), making it the richest media rights deal in cricket. This time, though, the IPL has segregated the TV and digital rights into their own packages. Package A consists of TV rights for the Indian subcontinent. Package B caters to digital rights for the Indian subcontinent. Package C contains digital rights for a special bouquet of matches, including the playoffs, for the Indian subcontinent. And Package D, TV and digital rights for the Rest of the World, which is divided into two sub-categories: combined ROW or five individual regions. The auction will start at 11am IST on Sunday with the simultaneous sale of Packages A and B. Only once winners are decided for them will Packages C and D come up for bidding. Also, given there is a half hour interval between every bid, there is a strong chance the auction may spill over into a second day.Every bidder can compete for more than one category but will need to list their price on a per match basis. For Package A, the base price per match is INR 49 crore (USD 6.3 million approx.). For Package B, it is INR 33 crore (USD 4.2 million approx.). For Package C, it is INR 16 crore (USD 2.05 million approx.). For Package D, it is INR 3 crore (USD 390,000 approx.).The IPL has made one change to the e-auction though. The winner of Package A can enter into a contest for the digital rights with the winner of Package B. Originally, this contest was supposed to feature bid increments of at least 5% but now it’s become a direct face-off. No minimum bid increments. The same process would be repeated to determine the winners of Packages C and D.

Farke’s new Godfrey: Leeds in talks to sign a "Rolls Royce" defender

The January transfer window officially opened for business last week and Leeds United have the chance to make moves to bolster their promotion hunt.

Daniel Farke’s side are currently top of the Championship table, one point ahead of Sheffield United and Burnley, and the manager may want to dip into the market to add more quality to his group, to give them the best chance of getting to the Premier League.

The Whites are fighting to finish in the top two to go straight up to the top-flight, rather than having to go through the play-offs as they did last season.

Leeds may look to the defensive side of their team to improve in the January transfer window after they watched their team drop a two-goal lead to draw against Hull on Saturday.

Farke’s men were 3-1 up heading into the final ten minutes and Illan Meslier did not cover himself in glory for any of the three goals, particularly with the second goal after seemingly keeping the ball in play after it was heading over.

Leeds are now, reportedly, looking to bolster their squad by adding another central defender to come in and compete with the likes of Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon.

Leeds United eyeing deal for Premier League defender

According to The Sun, Leeds United are one of the clubs pushing to sign Nottingham Forest centre-back Andrew Omobamidele in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Tricky Trees have made him available for a transfer and are looking to rake in a fee of £10m for the player they paid £11m to sign from Norwich City in the summer of 2023, with the Whites now in talks to get a deal done.

It states that Sheffield United, who recently lost central defender Harry Souttar to a long-term injury, are also eyeing up a swoop to land the Ireland international, which means that Leeds are facing strong competition from one of their promotion rivals to secure his signature.

The Sun adds that Nottingham Forest would be open to doing a loan that leads into a guaranteed permanent deal in the summer, although it is unclear if they would allow the guaranteed aspect of the move to only be activated upon promotion.

It reveals that Leeds view Omobamidele as a long-term investment that they could make and that they want to bring in more competition for their current centre-backs, as Rodon is currently the only senior, natural, centre-back option on the right side of the pairing.

Farke had a robust, athletic, young, right-footed Norwich academy graduate in his defence when he won the Championship title with the Canaries in the 2018/19 campaign, as Ben Godfrey lined up at the back for him that year.

Ben Godfrey's form under Daniel Farke

The England international, who is set to sign for Norwich’s rivals Ipswich Town this month, featured in 31 of the club’s 46 matches in that title-winning season in 2018/19.

He emerged as the first-choice on the right side of the defence during that campaign, playing alongside captain Christoph Zimmermann, and kept experienced options like Grant Hanley and Timm Klose out of the XI.

Former Norwich defender Ben Godfrey.

Godfrey suited the way Farke sees the game because he was progressive in his use of the ball. The defender ranked within the top 13% of his positional peers in the division for progressive carries (1.17) per 90, and the top 21% for progressive passes (3.35) per 90.

This shows that he was comfortable at bringing the ball out from the back to set up attacks for the team, both with passes to break lines and carries to get the team up the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the Norwich star was reliable with the ball at his feet and dominant in physical contests with opposition forwards on the ground.

Godfrey, who was once described as a “Rolls Royce” by podcaster Ben Winst, then played a season in the Premier League with the Canaries, but was unable to help them avoid relegation.

After that relegation, Everton swooped in to sign him from Norwich for a reported fee of £30m, which shows that Farke helped to turn him into an incredibly valuable asset.

Why Andrew Omobamidele could be Farke's next Ben Godfrey

Interestingly, Omobamidele was already on his way to becoming the German head coach’s next version of Godfrey before his dismissal in 2021.

Farke was sacked by sporting director Stuart Webber in November 2021, just a matter of months after he had given the Irish defender his first-team bow at the back end of the previous season.

Omobamidele, whose former coach Kenny Molloy described him as a “Rolls Royce”, featured in the last nine games of the 2020/21 campaign, after injuries to Zimmermann and Ben Gibson forced the manager’s hand, to help secure a league title for the Yellows.

As you can see in the table above, his performances in a pressured environment, fighting for the title, at the age of 18 were incredibly impressive, as he dominated opposition forwards in the air and on the deck.

Omobamidele then played five times in the Premier League the following season and four of those outings came before Farke was dismissed in November, as replacement Dean Smith opted for more experience.

The Ireland international has found football hard to come by in recent years, with just 11 league outings for Forest since his move from Norwich in 2023, but he could kickstart his career by coming back to the manager who placed faith in him at such a young age.

Farke did not get the chance to see through his development of Omobamidele, in the way that he was able to with Godfrey, and could look to help him fulfill his potential at Elland Road, and turn him into a £30m-rated – or higher – asset in the future.

Aston Villa now keen on signing "unstoppable" £25m forward this January

Aston Villa are now keen on signing a £25m striker this January, with Unai Emery planning up to three signings, according to a report.

Mixed first half of the season at Villa Park

Villa fans will have mixed emotions about their side’s first half of the campaign, given that they are in a strong position to qualify for the next round of the Champions League, but are struggling to reach the heights of last season in the Premier League.

The Villans remain within touching distance of the top four, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, so there is still time to turn things around, but Emery may feel some new additions are needed in the January transfer window.

One potential option for Emery this winter is Paris Saint-Germain’s Milan Skriniar, with a price tag of €35m (£29m) being set by the French club, making the 29-year-old a relatively affordable option if Emery wants to pursue a defender.

However, the manager appears to be more keen on strengthening his attacking options, with Villa in the race for a number of forwards, including Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui and teammate Charles De Ketelaere, who operates in attacking midfield.

Now, another option has also entered the frame, with The Daily Mail reporting that Aston Villa have reignited their interest in Borussia Dortmund Donyell Malen ahead of the January transfer window.

The Villans are said to be keen on signing Malen, who can operate across the front line, with Emery keen to add depth to his squad as we enter the second half of the season.

Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen celebrates

Dortmund are said to value the Dutchman at around £25m, as he now enters the final 18 months of his contract with the Bundesliga club.

The report also states that Emery is planning up to three signings in the January transfer window, so there could be a number of new faces through the door over the next few weeks.

The 25-year-old is capable of playing on both wings and through the middle, making him a versatile option for Emery, should he complete a move to Villa Park this winter.

Ever since breaking into the PSV Eindhoven team, the Netherlands international has shown a keen eye for finding the back of the net, as displayed by his goal record in the league.

Lauded as “unstoppable” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the former PSV Eindhoven man ranks in the 99th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, highlighting his ability in front of goal.

Villa are not short on top strikers, with Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran performing well this season, but Malen’s versatility and eye for goal could make him a great option for Emery, as he looks to get his side back on track in the second half of the campaign.

Marnus Labuschagne looks to Joe Root's methods for Sri Lanka success

Marnus Labuschagne will be aiming to copy Joe Root’s playbook in Sri Lanka as he prepares for what he expects will be his toughest challenge yet against spin.Labuschagne completed his latest county stint with Glamorgan on Sunday in an abandoned T20 clash against Surrey, but not before he had taken 2 for 27 from his four overs ahead of a tour were his legspin could be used more regularly by Aaron Finch and Pat Cummins. However, it will be with the bat where he will have his best chance to define games, especially the two Tests in Galle which conclude the tour.Related

Root had a phenomenal Test series in Sri Lanka in early 2021 where he made first-innings scores of 228 and 186 in Galle which followed a century in Pallekele on the previous tour.Labuschagne’s Test career started against Pakistan in the UAE in 2018 but his only other experience in Asia was the recent series in Pakistan. The home side’s spinners underwhelmed in those three matches where Labuschagne started with 90 in Rawalpindi before collecting first-innings ducks in the next two games.”For me, it’s my first real subcontinent challenge against spin, it’s about conquering that challenge,” Labuschagne told . “Joe Root played phenomenally over there, I’ve learned a lot from how he went about his game there.”As a team we want to be the best in the world, it doesn’t matter where you take us, we want to be winning games and I certainly think we can do that in Sri Lanka. I’ll have to get used to conditions, the heat and sweating it out, which is something we haven’t had the last few games [in the UK].”Although Labuschagne is now returning to Australia duty at the start of what will be a hectic period of national action he is keen for another pre-Ashes stint with Glamorgan next year.Labuschagne’s schedule is not as crammed as some of Australia’s three-format players as he is not yet a regular in the T20I side, but there are 11 Tests scheduled up to next March plus a lot of ODI cricket so he is aware he may need to manage his workload while his wife Rebekah is also expecting their first child later in the year.He has often credited his 2019 spell with Glamorgan as a key part of why he was able to have immediate success when parachuted into the side as Steven Smith’s concussion substitute at Lord’s.”There’s a lot of things in the mix, but I can’t see anything wrong with trying to copy the last time I played in the Ashes here, and play some county cricket with Glamorgan [going] into the Ashes next summer,” he said.”That’s our blueprint but we’ve got so much cricket this year, around 16 Tests and 18 one-day games, so we’re going to have to make sure I’m fit and healthy, and also get to spend time at home with my wife and child at some stage.”
