Quiet achiever Chris Woakes finds his feet overseas

Amid the drama of Mark Wood’s resurgence and the promise of Ollie Pope, Chris Woakes’ contribution to England’s Test touring party could easily be overlooked. That’s often the way of things with Woakes. He is, without doubt, a fine cricketer but, in the age of James Anderson and Ben Stokes, he has never quite been England’s best swing bowler and never quite been England’s best allrounder. It seems typical that he was Player of the Match in the World Cup semi-final. On the bigger stage, Stokes took the plaudits.Quietly, though, Woakes has put together quite the career. He should, at some stage in the next week or so, play his 100th ODI – the World Cup final was his 99th – and, along with that winners’ medal, he is close to the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets at Test level. He has several entries on the Lord’s honours boards – for five-wicket hauls, a ten-wicket haul and a Test century. Only 22 England men have reached the 100 ODI milestone; only six have claimed more wickets. Woakes requires only three more wickets to climb into the top five. Oh, and he has a winners’ medal for each one of England’s domestic competitions.ALSO READ: Archer out of SA T20Is, Mahmood added to squadNot that you would every know it from watching him in action. While some modern cricketers embrace the celebrity lifestyle and take on the attitude to match, Woakes has remained as modest and unassuming as the day he turned up at Edgbaston as a teenager. At a time his friends might have been doing their A Levels, he was already established as the club’s new-ball bowler. Not since FR Foster – more than a century ago – has the club produced a better allrounder. And, unlike Foster, Woakes seems most unlikely to be implicated in the murder of a prostitute, banned from Edgbaston and wind up in an asylum. There are times you wonder if Woakes’ amenable nature has worked against him, though. He is, perhaps, just a little too easy to drop at times. Just as Moeen Ali was just a little too easy to move up and down the batting order, you wonder if he had been just a little bit more stroppy at times, he would have played more than those 33 Tests. Those Birmingham boys… Too nice for their own good. The one gap on his CV has been his record in overseas Tests. Ahead of this winter, he averaged 61.77 in 12 overseas Tests compared to 23.45 in 19 Tests at home. While he has rarely bowled poorly, without the Dukes ball he has sometimes seemed impotent. But if Anderson’s career has taught us anything, it is that players can continue to learn. And, over the last few months, Woakes has demonstrated an improved ability to gain movement from the Kookaburra ball. In two Tests, in New Zealand and South Africa, he has claimed seven wickets 25.71.Yes, it’s a small sample size. And yes, in Johannesburg the surface offered seamers some assistance. But none of England’s other seamers – not even Wood – gained the movement enjoyed by Woakes and he was far from flattered by his final figures. On a horribly slow surface in Hamilton, he looked the most dangerous bowler on either side and, among his four wickets, were Kane Williamson, who edged a beauty, Ross Taylor and Tom Latham. After years of struggling to gain any movement with the Kookaburra, it felt like a breakthrough. He credits, in part, Darren Gough for the improvement. Gough spent a couple of weeks with the England squad as a bowling consultant at the start of the New Zealand trip and encouraged Woakes to experiment more. In particular, he is using the wobble-seam delivery more and he is trying to hit a full length much harder than he has in the past; a tactic that can only be achieved with effort, fitness and strength.”In the past I’ve tried to do exactly what’s worked at home,” Woakes said. “It doesn’t necessarily work as well, which is clear to see. Taking 20 wickets with a Kookaburra ball can be hard. So I did a bit of work with Goughy about what helped with him in conditions away from home.”With this ball I feel like if I bowl seam up it just slides on. So, I’m trying to use my wobble-seam a bit more. I’ve used it in the past but I feel like I’m bowling it better now. And I’ve tried to drive the ball into that fuller length, rather than floating it into that length.”With a Dukes ball you get that natural kiss with it. My bowling certainly gets a natural kiss off the surface. But here you have to snap it into that length. Just hitting that length a lot harder. I’ve tried to do that in the past but have always been slightly short. So I’ve tried to be brave and bowl a fuller length, which will still hit the top of the stumps.”Despite those signs of progress, Woakes admitted it had been a somewhat frustrating tour for him. After that impressive showing in Hamilton, he was hopeful of playing in the first Test of this series in Centurion. But he went down with the sickness bug a couple of days before Christmas and instead spent both the holiday period and most of the Test in isolation in his hotel room.Chris Woakes is pumped and his team-mates celebrate•Getty Images

“It has been frustrating,” he said. “I got ill just before the first Test when I was hoping to get the nod and then had to wait until the last Test. Have I had a worse Christmas? No. It wasn’t ideal. But you get through it and playing the final Test match and winning the series 3-1 makes up for it.”It is too early to say whether he will make another World Cup cycle. Or indeed, the next Ashes series. He’ll be 31 in March and, though he carries it with cheerful good humour, you suspect that long-standing knee injury means he never plays without pain.”I can’t look that far ahead,” he said. “I never have. It’s hard to look four years down the line at potentially another World Cup, even an Ashes down under. I have to make sure that every time I get the opportunity to play for England I put my hand up and do my job. Hopefully I’ll still be involved.”I’m really looking forward to this ODI series. It’s our first one-dayer since the World Cup final, so I’m really looking forward to getting that group back together and seeing what we can do. Whenever that team gets together we are excited about playing cricket together.”I’m really pleased Eoin Morgan has stayed on. He’s so much more to give. He’s not old by any means and is probably playing the best cricket of his career. He’s one of the best and calmest captains I’ve ever played under. I’m glad he’s carrying on.”Many of the same things could be said about Woakes.

Sunderland now eyeing move to sign former Arsenal gem in free transfer

Sunderland have enjoyed quite the season of frustration, but the Black Cats will be looking to put any failure to bed this summer by turning to the transfer window and potentially welcoming a former Premier League gem.

Sunderland transfer news

If they could go back, it would be interesting to see whether Sunderland would have kept hold of Tony Mowbray instead of kicking off a nightmare Michael Beale spell. When the former lost his job, the Black Cats were in the race to reach the playoffs. Months later and after a short-lived Beale nightmare, they sit 13th and on course to note the current Championship campaign down as one to forget.

Sunderland fumbled “magical” PL sensation who is now worth £60m

Sunderland once amazingly had this Premier League star on trial.

ByKelan Sarson Apr 18, 2024

It will at least be a fresh start at the Stadium of Light this summer though, with a new manager set to take charge. As things stand, the main name linked with the job seems to be Paul Heckingbottom, who was sacked by Premier League side Sheffield United earlier in the campaign. Having previously had success in the Championship, however, he could represent a solid appointment.

Once they find their next manager, the transfer window becomes key and it seems as though the Black Cats are well aware of that. According to Chronicle Live, Sunderland are now eyeing a move to sign Amani Richards, whose Leicester City contract is set to expire at the end of the season, allowing the winger to leave as a free agent.

The 19-year-old has already had quite the career, having jumped from Chelsea's academy to Arsenal's as a highly-rated wonderkid. That wonderkid tag shouldn't go away just yet either, given how young Richards still is. A player who has no weak foot, Sunderland could help the former Arsenal gem discover his best form and realise his potential.

Richards could follow Jack Clarke path at Sunderland

One player who knows all about dropping out of the Premier League is Jack Clarke. The winger failed to make it at Tottenham Hotspur, before eventually finding himself at Sunderland where he is now a star earning reported interest from the likes of West Ham United. It is the type of path that Richards can use as inspiration to make Wearside the perfect destination this summer.

After struggling to break into Leicester's first team this season, senior minutes may well be the priority no matter what for Richards if he wants to step things up. With Sunderland's philosophy of handing young players ample opportunity, a move to the Stadium of Light could represent a wise decision by the teenager.

It's important that the Black Cats get this summer right off the pitch and they'll want to stick to how they do things in the process in a move that should see players of Richards' potential targeted once again in the coming months.

Man Utd make first move for bargain Varane replacement in summer deal

Whether it be rumours surrounding Erik ten Hag's future or showing the door to certain players to make room for incomings, reports suggest that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in for a busy summer at Manchester United.

Man Utd transfer news

The international break has seen Ten Hag's future come into question more than ever at Old Trafford, with England boss Gareth Southgate and Brighton & Hove Albion's Roberto De Zerbi topping Ratcliffe's reported shortlist.

That means the pressure is on Ten Hag to turn this season around, be that in the form of a top four finish in the Premier League or an FA Cup win. As things stand, United sit sixth and nine points adrift of the Champions League places and are on course to face Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final after knocking Liverpool out.

Meanwhile, in another ruthless act, United are reportedly ready to accept offers for Christian Eriksen this summer after the Dane lost his place to new young star Kobbie Mainoo, who has been one of few bright sparks at Old Trafford.

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The midfielder may not be the only one to depart, either, with Raphael Varane's contract set to expire in the summer of 2025 and the Frenchman's future still uncertain. This will leave the Red Devils with quite the gap to fill, allowing a Serie A target to potentially come in.

Man United make first move to sign "fast" new player who could cost £100m+

The deal may not come cheap…

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Manchester United have made enquiries over signing Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, who is valued at just €20m (£17m) ahead of the transfer window. United will need to act quickly, however, with Atletico Madrid also interested and that price likely to rise if Lucumi enjoys a solid Copa America tournament with Columbia this summer.

Still only 25-years-old, Lucumi should be entering his prime as a central defender to potentially hand United a bargain replacement for Varane when the summer window swings open.

"Ridiculous" Lucumi can replace Varane

Whilst replacing a defender who was once a serial winner at Real Madrid will be far from easy, Lucumi certainly represents a solid choice to turn to. The stats even show that the Bologna man has outperformed Varane in a number of areas so far this season.

Described as "ridiculous" by South American football expert FranHCLO, Lucumi has more than earned a big move after a superb season at Bologna. Thiago Motta's side currently sit as high as fourth and remain on course to sensationally qualify for the Champions League in one of the stories of the campaign.

It would represent a change in United's transfer policy for the better if they managed to land a bargain replacement for Varane. Where they previously splashed the cash to sign name value above all else, reports suggest that the Red Devils are acting far wiser with Ratcliffe at the helm.

Ravi Bishnoi, Towhid Hridoy among five Under-19 World Cup final players sanctioned by ICC

Akash Singh, Shamim Hossain and Rakibul Hasan also charged for behaviour that led to “unedifying” events on Sunday

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Feb-2020Describing the unpleasant events at the close of Bangladesh’s successful chase at the Under-19 World Cup final on Sunday as “unedifying”, the ICC has heavily sanctioned three Bangladesh and two India players for breaching the governing body’s Code of Conduct. Both Hossain and Singh were handed eight suspension points (six demerit) while Hasan was given four suspension points (five demerit). Bishnoi was handed a total of seven demerit points: five for breaching Article 2.21 and another two for the manner in which he celebrated the dismissal of Avishek Das in the 23rd over of the Bangladesh innings, which breached Article 2.5.All the above points will remain on the players’ records for two years and apply to upcoming international matches – at the Under-19 or senior level – they are likely to participate in. Spurs leading race for "extraordinary" defender available for just £21m

Tottenham have moved into pole position to land an exciting new option at the heart of defence this summer, as they look to bounce back from a tough end to the season.

Spurs' Champions League hopes hanging by a thread

Defeat in the north London derby in front of their home fans has left Tottenham's season threatening to fizzle out without the prize of Champions League football at the end of it.

They battled back from 3-0 down to 3-2, but could not find an equaliser in the dying minutes as Arsenal rode their luck to come away with all three points and boost their own hopes of winning their first Premier League title since 2004.

After England's poor performance in Europe, only the top four sides qualify for the Champions League next season, instead of the widely anticipated five teams. Currently fifth, Ange Postecoglou's side are seven points behind Aston Villa, but have two games in hand on the Villans.

However, even were they to be perfect between now and the end of the campaign, their fate would be out of their hands, and they face a tricky run of fixtures that includes another London derby against Chelsea as well as games against two sides above them, though they also face an already relegated Sheffield United side and a potentially soon to be relegated Burnley.

But attention is turning firmly to the summer, with the squad rebuild begun 12 months ago after the departure of Harry Kane set to continue ahead of the new season.

Tottenham in pole position for defender

Now, reports in Italy could have handed Spurs a boost, claiming that the Lilywhites are 'first in line' to land impressive Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, Calafiori has been a revelalation for Thiago Motta and Bologna this season, making 27 appearances to help the Italian side into 4th, a spot currently enough to guarantee Champions League football next season.

Dubbed an "extraordinary" talent in the Italian press, he is an outside bet for Luciano Spalletti's EURO 2024 squad and his star is firmly on an upwards trajectory.

Riccardo Calafiori Bologna

His form has not gone unnoticed though, with Tottenham and Juventus both having been alerted to his situation. Though Juventus usually have the advantage when it comes to landing Serie A talent, it is claimed that this time round Tottenham are the frontrunners due to the fact that they have more cash available than the Old Lady, who would likely try and engineer a loan deal or part exchange for his services.

Though no price tag is mentioned, he has previously been reported to be available for around 25m euros (£21m) this summer, which could prove to be a bargain should he continue to deliver on his immense promise.

Arsenal have already sold Zinchenko’s replacement for just £10m

In one swift afternoon of football in Islington Arsenal's title hopes felt like they disappeared into the abyss. Have they learnt anything from last season's collapse? Time will tell.

Sunday offered little evidence they had. This Gunners team were soaring high in 2024 but Unai Emery came back to town and scampered off with all three points.

Mikel Arteta's men are just two points behind league leaders Manchester City now but we all know just how good Pep Guardiola's men are during a run-in.

It's unlikely they'll drop many, if any points over the coming weeks, with Arsenal now potentially left to rue their 2-0 defeat to Villa.

The team selection was an interesting one. Kai Havertz moved back into a midfield position to accommodate Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard started ahead of Gabriel Martinelli and there was no Jakub Kiwior after his early substitution against Bayern Munich. Instead, Oleksandr Zinchenko started.

Zinchenko's performance against Aston Villa

The £32m signing of Zinchenko back in the summer of 2022 was an eye-catching one.

Arsenal were acquiring a proven winner, someone with fight, passion and guile. He has shown every inch of those qualities during his time in north London but sadly, he is a defensive liability.

Described by CBS reporter James Benge as "unmissably bad" for his exploits against the Villans on Sunday, it was a performance that rather summed up the Ukrainian's campaign.

When he is bad, he is truly bad and that's what we saw over the weekend. Guilty of losing possession, lacking concentration and simply not being on the same wavelength as his teammates, it will frustrate Arteta no end that a player he knows well from Man City is his main source of blame.

Zinchenko can show some nice touches but when up against it, teams do tend to target his left-hand side. That's what happened against Villa.

As soon as Leon Bailey was introduced it looked like curtains for the full-back, with the Jamaican ultimately scoring the opening goal of the game just minutes from time. Where was Zinchenko? Nowhere to be seen.

The defender had a warning sign just moments before that. Guilty of doing too much on the edge of the area, as he so often is, Youri Tielemans dispossessed him and with a wonderful dipping effort struck both post and bar.

So, how do Arsenal solve the problem? Fortunately, they have Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasu to call upon. They will also soon have Jurrien Timber back from an ACL Injury.

jurrien-timber-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-academy-injury-reuell-walters

That said, have they potentially already sold their long-term replacement?

Arsenal's rising star has already been sold

Because of Arsenal's rise to title challengers under Arteta, he has found it difficult to hand regular chances to those coming through the academy.

It pales in comparison to his early days with the club when both Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe were in the embryonic stages of their career.

There have been two moments for Ethan Nwaneri – the Premier League's youngest-ever player now – but for others opportunities have not been forthcoming.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri

As a result, they've decided that leaving is their only option. It's thought Arsenal are now on the verge of losing Charlie Patino, but they have already lost budding left-back Lino Sousa.

In a deal that could be worth more than £10m, the teenager joined none other than Aston Villa back in January with his departure coming as a shock.

Sousa hadn't achieved any first-team minutes yet but was well thought of by those in the know. After all, he had already been in a few matchday squads.

Described as "England's future left-back" by analyst Ben Mattinson, the future is bright for a player who's spent the second half of the current campaign on loan at Plymouth.

So, what makes him so special? Well, in the words of Arsenal youth expert Jeorge Bird, 'he is very composed in possession, with his playing style seeming somewhat reminiscent of Ainsley Maitland-Niles at youth level.'

Bird continued: 'Sousa relishes pushing forward but also doesn’t shirk his defensive responsibilities.'

So, he seems to combine the best of Zinchenko – that technical composure – but also adds an extra layer in terms of his defensive security.

Whether Sousa makes it at first-team level at Villa remains to be seen, but Arsenal could well regret their decision to cash in on such a talented youngster when the left-back berth is up for grabs.

Nottingham Forest now tracking £10m bargain buy who earns just £11k-p/w

Nottingham Forest are among the Premier League clubs tracking a Club Brugge star expected to leave Belgium this summer, it has been reported.

Forest battling for their Premier League lives

Having been docked four points for breaching the Premier League's financial fair play regulations, Nuno Espirito Santo's Nottingham Forest are flirting with relegation heading into the final games of the season.

A 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, combined with wins for Luton Town and Everton, leaves Forest above the drop zone only on goal difference, while they sit two points behind Everton with the Toffees having played a game less.

Forest do have a somewhat favourable fixture list for the final six weeks of the season and their destiny remains in their own hands as they travel to Everton, Burnley and Sheffield United, knowing that three wins in those games will likely take them to safety even with the points deduction.

They also face Chelsea, Manchester City and Wolves as they look to ensure their position in next season's top flight, which could in turn lead to more spending in the summer.

Midfielder in the sights as Reds battle Everton and Palace

Now, the Midlands outfit have been credited with an interest in young midfielder Raphael Onyedika, who currently plies his trade with Club Brugge in Belgium's top flight.

The 22-year-old plays mostly as a defensive midfielder, where Forest are already seemingly able to call upon Orel Mangala and Ibrahim Sangare, but Turkish outlet Cumhuriyet claims that they have joined the queue for the 22-year-old, who is also wanted by Everton, Crystal Palace and Galatasaray.

Though Onyedika is on an £11,000 per week contract until 2027, previous reports have claimed that "he will almost certainly leave Bruges" this summer as the club look to cash in on the Nigerian, and they have priced him between 10m and 15m euros (£8.5m-£12.8m).

There is already a strong Nigerian flavour running through the Forest starting XI with both Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina representing the Super Eagles in the Premier League.

This season, Onyedika has managed a massive 2.61 tackles per 90 minutes, slightly fewer than Ryan Yates, and like Yates he is no stranger to the referees notebook. In fact, despite being just 22-years-old he has been booked a mammoth 60 times in his professional career already, with 55 of those coming at senior level and five coming this season.

With Forest already under scrutiny for financial fair play, is another tough-tackling defensive midfielder really what they need to improve on their current showing next season? They certainly seem to think so.

Chelsea set to strike gold by selling "special" star for 31,478% profit

There are not many youth systems in English football as successful as Chelsea’s Cobham academy. In recent years, Chelsea’s academy products have dominated English football, and not just whilst playing at Stamford Bridge.

Some, like Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount, make a major impact at Chelsea, via a loan spell where they hone their skills in a first-team environment. Gallagher is now a key member of Chelsea’s first-team squad, and Mount won the Champions League with his boyhood side, before leaving for Manchester United last summer.

Mount was not the only Cobham product to win the biggest prize in European football in 2021. The likes of Reece James, now club captain, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who now play for Roma and Nottingham Forest respectively, were some of the other Cobham graduates involved in the squad.

Not only do the Blues take British talent and turn them into superstars at Cobham, but they also buy players from further afield. A recent example of this is Charly Musonda, a highly-rated winger who joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2012. Sadly, due to injury issues, it did not work out for Musonda at Chelsea, and he now plies his trade in Cyprus for Anorthosis.

However, the west Londoners might have a more recent youngster brought in from outside of Britain, who could turn out to be one of the club's most profitable academy graduates in recent years.

Ian Maatsen’s transfer value in 2024

In 2018, Chelsea signed young left-back Ian Maatsen from PSV Eindhoven’s academy for a fee of just £94k. Since joining the club, Maatsen has managed just 16 appearances and is yet to register a goal involvement.

However, he has been on loan at various clubs, particularly impressing at Burnley last season, where he scored four goals and assisted six in the Championship to help the Clarets get promoted to the Premier League.

Now, Maatsen finds himself on loan at Borussia Dortmund, a move which took place in January and will last until the end of the season. Despite signing a new contract before he departed on loan, Football Insider, believe the Blues are considering selling Maatsen during the summer transfer window.

The rumoured price tag set by Chelsea for Maatsen is £30m. If they managed to get that much money, it would represent excellent profit from the £94k they spent on the Dutchman, a margin of a whopping 31,478%, to be exact.

Ian Maatsen for Chelsea

However, Chelsea’s expectations for Maatsen’s cost might be too high. The "special" talent – as described by Blues writer Tom Overend – is valued at £17m according to Football Observatory, £13m less than what Todd Boehly and Co would allegedly accept for him in the summer.

Ian Maatsen’s season in numbers

Maatsen has had an impressive time of things at Dortmund during his loan spell so far. The 22-year-old has played 18 games, a stint which has yielded four goal involvements, two goals and two assists.

The Netherlands U21 international has been superb in attack for Dortmund and has been tucking into midfield and holding width on the left-hand side at times. He has been a constant creative threat. According to Sofascore, Maatasen has created three big chances in the Bundesliga and averages 0.6 key passes per game.

Defensively, the left-back has also performed well. As well as being part of five clean sheets in the Bundesliga, Maatsen averages 1.9 tackles per game and an impressive 5.1 ball recoveries per game. This is no surprise, given his pace helps him to make quick recovery runs and win the ball back for his side. On average, the defender also wins 3.2 ground duels per game.

The youthful loanee has developed a good understanding with Dortmund’s left-wingers. Whilst the German outfit do not have a set option out wide, Maatsen has a good partnership with the likes of Karim Adeyemi, Jadon Sancho and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, all options for Dortmund on the left.

It has certainly been a productive loan spell for Maatsen in Germany thus far. He has played a big part in his side reaching the Champions League semi-final, where they will face PSG, and the Dutchman will also have a large role to play as they push for a top-four finish this season.

It remains to be seen whether Dortmund themselves will match Chelsea’s £30m price tag for Maatsen. Regardless, it is a fee that represents great profit for the Blues and can be reinvested to help improve their squad and push them up the table.
