Mitchell Marsh powers Perth Scorchers to big win

He powered Perth Scorchers to their highest BBL score with an unbeaten 93 as Brisbane Heat fell short by 34 runs

Tristan Lavalette11-Jan-2020A belligerent Mitchell Marsh powered Perth Scorchers to their highest BBL score and an important 34-run victory over Brisbane Heat at Perth Stadium. After electing to bat, the Scorchers captain took advantage of a batting paradise with an astounding 41-ball unbeaten 93 highlighted by eight sixes to energise the Scorchers faithful. Marsh, who notched his highest BBL score, dominated a 124-run partnership with Cameron Bancroft (41*) to lift the home side to a mighty 3 for 213.In reply, Tom Banton hit a rapid 55 but lacked support as the Scorchers easily won for just the fourth time from 12 attempts at Perth Stadium. It was their second straight victory over Heat in as many weeks.Pattinson struggles amid Scorchers flurryAustralian Test fast bowler James Pattinson had a tough BBL season debut when a pumped-up Josh Inglis cracked his first ball to the boundary in a sign of things to come. Pattinson’s struggles forced captain Chris Lynn to turn to in-form spinner Zahir Khan in the third over, but Inglis – who hit six boundaries in his first 12 deliveries – was unperturbed as he pounced on uncharacteristically loose bowling.Inglis looked unstoppable until he tamely chipped back to Josh Lalor. Inglis’ exit meant a return of Pattinson, but his horror start continued when Max Bryant dropped a sharp chance at backward point to reprieve Sam Whiteman in the fifth over. After a sedate start, Liam Livingstone found his groove and attacked Zahir in the sixth over to cap off an outstanding Powerplay for the Scorchers, where they amassed 63 runs.Ben Laughlin deceived Whiteman with a slower delivery as Heat dried the runs. But with big-hitters Livingstone and Marsh at the crease, Scorchers appeared well poised at 2 for 87 in ten overs.Marsh eviscerates HeatHeat clawed back when a frustrated Livingstone ungainly fell to a Zahir full toss, as the contest tightened in the middle overs. Scorchers failed to score a boundary for six overs with Marsh and Bancroft content on knocking the ball around on the wide expanses of Perth Stadium.Marsh ended the drought in the 14th over when he clubbed a Laughlin short delivery into the crowd to signal his intentions. He set his sights on a returning Pattinson in the 16th over with two sixes to further dent the big quick’s grim figures. He finished with figures of 0 for 52 from 4 overs.Bancroft joined the party with several lusty blows to expose Heat’s lack of bowling depth. Marsh was dropped by Banton on 54 and made them pay with an outrageous flick into the crowd off Lalor in the 19th over, followed by another six.Marsh then outdid himself with three successive sixes off Laughlin to complete the innings in style and ensure Scorchers easily beat their previous highest BBL score of 7 for 203.Heat lose wickets around aggressive BantonHeat needed a flyer and Banton got them rolling with a slew of boundaries off Scorchers’ fast bowlers. His most astounding shot was a premeditated ramp shot off Jhye Richardson in the fourth over to fuel hope. But his partner Bryant couldn’t get going and holed out moments later to bring Lynn to the crease.Marsh unsuccessfully tried Fawad Ahmed inside the Powerplay with the spinner leaking 19 runs, marked by a towering six from Lynn over long-off. The partnership menaced until Lynn holed out to a brilliant catch from a sliding Livingstone to put the onus on Banton.Straight after the Powerplay, Joel Paris, who replaced youngster Matthew Kelly in the team, claimed Matt Renshaw as Scorchers continued to chip away. Banton proved a thorn and brought up his half-century with a crunching straight drive off Marsh, but fell shortly after when he skied a return catch to Chris Jordan. His dismissal left Heat 4 for 89 at the halfway point with their faint hopes slipping away.Party time for ScorchersAfter his tough start, Ahmed bowled much better in the middle overs to shackle Heat, who did not score a boundary for five overs. Ben Cutting needed to hit top gear immediately but couldn’t get going. He had a reprieve in the 15th over when Cameron Green dropped a sitter and then smashed a six next ball. But Cutting’s luck ended when he hit straight to backward square leg to effectively end the contest. The back-end was party time for Scorchers on the disco themed night at Perth Stadium, as the Heat’s three-game winning streak ended.

Uh oh: Celtic could now sell “wonderful” star player in huge Parkhead exit

A concerning Celtic transfer update has emerged regarding the exit of a "wonderful" Hoops player, with a summer move away from Parkhead potentially on the cards.

Celtic transfer news

The upcoming summer transfer window is going to be an important one for Celtic, regardless of whether they end up winning the Scottish Premiership title over Rangers or not. By the club's usual high standards, performances haven't always been as impressive in comparison to previous years, which is why they will be second in the table if their rivals win their game in hand.

New signings could be needed to add new life to Brendan Rodgers' squad at the end of the season, and some potential additions have emerged in recent times, as they look to act fast.

Celtic midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

Paulo Bernardo is currently on loan at Celtic from Benfica, and such is the manner in which he has impressed at Parkhead this season, a permanent move to the club has been mooted. He has two league goals and assists apiece to his name in 2023/24 to date, as well as averaging 1.6 tackles per game.

Wolves left-back Hugo Bueno is seen as another possible target for the Hoops, having failed to snap him up in the January transfer window, with a summer switch potentially on the cards instead.

Celtic could sell "wonderful" O'Riley

According to a new update from Give Me Sport, Celtic could end up selling Matt O'Riley this summer if they receive a huge offer, as interest emerges from other clubs such as Brighton, Brentford and Leeds United.

"Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley will 'definitely' be in demand during the 2024 summer transfer window at Parkhead, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.

"According to GMS sources, O'Riley will be 'in demand' this summer, with a move to the Premier League a distinct possibility. The 23-year-old arrived at Parkhead from Milton Keynes Dons during the 2022 winter transfer window for a fee of £1.5m."

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

O'Riley is undoubtedly one of Celtic's most talented and influential players currently, so the idea of him moving elsewhere this summer doesn't bear thinking about. The 23-year-old Dane has scored 11 goals and registered 10 assists in the league this season, producing so much quality from his attacking midfield role. Rodgers has also lauded him in the recent past, saying:

"It is all about arriving in the areas and finding composure to finish. I really like him, his build-up play is good, he takes the ball, and he needs to work on his pressing and intensity but he is a wonderful footballer and he is a good guy as well."

There is always the chance that O'Riley feels that a fresh challenge is required, however, possibly moving to the Premier League, so it could be hard to begrudge him a move away, although it would be nice if he bowed out with a title win.

On the plus side, Celtic will be able to demand big money for the Denmark international, considering he is contracted at Parkhead until 2027, which could at least ease some of the pain of seeing him leave, should he decide to.

Team-mates past and present lead Vernon Philander retirement tributes

Faf du Plessis: “A banker”“With Vern, it’s great to know as a captain you can give the ball to someone with control. Test cricket is all about control, run-rate, putting guys under pressure through either spells where you feel you can get a lot of wickets – with Vern sometimes that is the case, when the ball is moving around, it feels like he can get a guy out at any stage or with the control factor. If the wicket is a bit slower, I know I am going to get control out of him.”In Test cricket you don’t want to be throwing the ball to someone and hope that he keeps the run-rate under 4.5, it releases a lot of pressure. I know that Vern gives me that control. He is a banker, most certainly always. Later in his career, it has been about managing his workload. This is a four-Test series. He didn’t bowl as much in the previous game as a bowler like him can bowl but had the foresight and understanding that we will need him here at Wanderers and if necessary push himself a little bit more, which he will be because it’s last.”Graeme Smith: “The last cog in the wheel”“Under my captaincy Vern was like the last cog in the wheel. He was an incredible guy who came in and added to our bowling attack. His skill against left-handed batsmen was a huge thing. Being able to be effective and get us into games, allowing other people to be more aggressive and attack more because we always knew Vern was going to be reliable and give us what we needed.”I think the one thing that always gets missed about him is that he’s a fantastic competitor. He’s got the bit between his teeth and he gets into contests. And his ability to front up. We are all put under pressure in the international game. It’s how you regroup and front up again. Vern was fantastic from that perspective. An element of that needs to come back into our national side – how guys front up under pressure and perform when needed; when the moments are right.”He was outstanding. I would have loved to see him progress more in the short formats. My argument with Vern has always been has he always got to that level of talent that he’s had? Has he worked hard enough, at times, to get there. Certainly what he’s produced in the Test format for us, his record speaks for itself. He can be proud.”Now the conversation is how do we keep him in the system, because his knowledge on bowling and his skill is something we cannot afford to lose. As CSA we lose too much intellectual property all the time. Even post my 11 years of captaincy no-one sat down and said, ‘Look here, what did you learn? What are the systems?’ It’s an area we’re not very good at. So we’ve got to try and keep all this knowledge of international cricket and quality players in the system to hopefully develop the next heroes.”Quinton de Kock: “His own person”“Vern’s his own person. He brings a lot, not just with his skills with the ball and the bat, but with his attitude towards the game. We’re going to miss that. I hope he can have a good goodbye.”Beuran Hendricks: “Special””With Vernon and me, there’s always that senior player versus younger player. I am always turning to Vern and making sure I get enough info out of him. It’s a special one for me to play with Vern even though it’s his last Test. I started my career with Patto [Dane Paterson] and Vern and it was special to share the new ball with Vern. “

Return of the big guns signals start of T20 World Cup countdown

Dale Steyn set to play first international in nearly a year as Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes re-enter fray for England

The Preview by Andrew Miller11-Feb-2020Big pictureAfter a two-month prologue, it’s time for the main event. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, with the challenge of back-to-back T20 World Cups glittering on the horizon, and the small matter of the Test and ODI series now safely out of the way, put your hands together for the return of the titans. The parade of champions. The launch of the hottest ticket of the autumn – the three-match T20I showdown! Is that overstating things a touch? Maybe just a bit. But nevertheless, you’d be hard-pressed to ignore the not-so-subtle change of emphasis that has swept through the game in the months since the completion of the 2019 World Cup.England played a few rookies and mixed a few messages in last week’s erratic ODI displays, in which their desire to get something out of the series eventually trumped their urge to give the kids a full run of games. But now, with Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes restored to the front line, and Mark Wood ready to be unleashed once more after his post-Test downtime, the opening fixture in East London marks the official start of England’s return to the white-ball saddle. For this is the format that now offers the swiftest route to glory for an England team that has the 2023 World Cup defence as a long-term objective, and the memory of the 2016 World T20 final to drive them on in the short term. It’s easy, and perhaps understandable, for teams to feel sated, even a touch directionless, after achieving a lifetime’s ambition, but the pain of that defeat at the hands of Carlos Brathwaite’s scything blade four years ago will doubtless be a touchstone as they build towards the next campaign, looming large already, in Australia in October.England won’t be putting forward their very strongest T20 team for this series, for the absence of Jofra Archer with an elbow fracture is a big setback. But you only had to look at the injection of composure and quality that the returning Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid provided in last week’s third ODI to be reminded of what a fine-tuned machine England’s white-ball squad has become. For Moeen in particular, this promises to be a significant return to the fray, with his Test future still shrouded in doubt after his decision to sit out the Sri Lanka tour.South Africa are perhaps a few steps behind in their own T20 preparations, with Faf du Plessis and Kagiso Rabada still resting up after the Tests, but the hotly anticipated return of Dale Steyn – for his first international appearances in nearly a year – is evidence of the desire that still lingers among the remnants of South Africa’s golden generation. For the time being, though, continuity is the watchword. Quinton de Kock will lead in du Plessis’s absence, and open the batting, too, alongside Reeza Hendricks, who looked fluent amid the showers in Durban last week. Temba Bavuma at No. 3 will have a chance to build on his favourable white-ball impression, and then there’s the dangerous David Miller lurking in the middle order – the sort of proven T20 performer who can turn any innings in his side’s favour. There’s promise in that mix, and who knows, there could yet be an injection of quality further down the line, with AB de Villiers very much in contention for a last hurrah at the main event, a year on from his aborted offer to return for the 50-over World Cup. That may be a plot twist for a later date, but all such prospects add extra layers of context to these upcoming contests – which is something that bilateral T20Is have all too often lacked in the past.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)South Africa WLWWT
England TWLLWIn the spotlightWell, who else could we possibly turn the focus on to in these circumstances? At the age of 36, Dale Steyn’s refusal to bow to the passing of time is inspirational, but is it sustainable? His Test career is done, and his role in ODIs ended with his sad departure from last year’s World Cup – ruled out with a shoulder injury having arrived in England semi-fit but hopeful. But while there’s one final crack at an elusive global trophy to be had, he’s not ready to call it quits just yet. Such a long-overdue triumph would be the accolade that such a champion performer deserves at the end of a truly exceptional career, but is experience enough to carry the day for Steyn? He lacked penetration at the last World T20 in India in 2016, where South Africa failed to progress from the group stages, and some might argue that Grant Elliott’s seismic six at Auckland in the 2015 World Cup semi-final was the moment in which his white-ball career truly died. All the more motivation, clearly, for Steyn to climb back off the canvas and silence his doubters one last time.Whether Moeen Ali can be persuaded to play red-ball cricket again is an issue for another day. But all things being equal, he remains among the very first names on England’s T20 team-sheet, given the maturity of his offspin, the tactical nous he offers as a successful captain in his own right, and the 0 to 60 power that he offers with his late-innings biffing. Few players can connect more sweetly from a standing start than Moeen. He deserves to be valued in this format where perhaps he has been taken for granted elsewhere. And, after the sad decline of his form during the World Cup last summer, at precisely the moment he ought to have been approaching fulfilment, England would do well to harness whatever burning ambition still resides within an often under-rated competitor.Team newsSteyn’s hotly anticipated comeback dominates the agenda in a familiar-looking South Africa line-up, as the new-look side that impressed in patches in the ODIs is given another chance to bed in. Sisanda Magala could yet squeeze Dwaine Pretorius out of the starting XI if he passes a fitness test. Du Plessis and Rabada wait in the wings for now.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (capt, wk), 2 Reeza Hendricks, 3 Temba Bavuma, 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 Jon-Jon Smuts, 6 David Miller, 7 Dwaine Pretorius/Sisanda Magala, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Lungi Ngidi.Back come England’s big guns, Buttler and Stokes, though where will they slot into the XI? There’s the distinct possibility that Buttler, who hasn’t played a T20I since April last year, will be given the chance to reprise his stunning form at the top of the order for Rajasthan Royals, which might mean bad news for Jason Roy, whose sketchy record against spin leaves him vulnerable if sides choose to target him from the outset. Buttler may also be keen to reclaim the gloves from Jonny Bairstow, who filled in for the five-match series in New Zealand in November. Dawid Malan slammed a 48-ball century on that tour, and has been muttering quite loudly about his lack of opportunities, so he’s presumably due his chance at No. 3. Joe Denly can never be ruled out of consideration, especially given his brace of fifties in the ODIs.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy/Jos Buttler (wk), 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Tom Curran, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark WoodPitch and conditionsThe deluges that wrecked Durban’s ODI don’t look like affecting the Eastern Cape to quite such a terminal effect, with the conditions for Wednesday set to be overcast, windy and humid. In theory, Buffalo Park’s short boundaries will encourage some lively strokeplay, but the highest score in two previous T20Is at the venue is a relatively unremarkable 169.Stats and trivia There have been just two T20Is at Buffalo Park, the first in 2012 when New Zealand won by eight wickets, and most recently in October 2018, when Zimbabwe were dispatched by 34 runsQuotes”I love playing against these guys. I watched them now in the Tests and the ODIs and I can’t wait to get out there. I haven’t played against England for a long time. It’s great to be in East London where it’s not the fastest track in the world but it will do. Any time you are playing at the highest level against the world’s best players – if you’re not excited about that, then I don’t know what’s going to get you excited.”
“The white-ball journey that we went on, that changed the way we played, that journey continues now, into the Twenty20 from the 50-overs. It will be the same sort of motivational speech from Morgan, the same sort of team dynamic, the same way that we want to play.”
Mark Wood says England will be sticking with their World Cup-winning philosophy for the T20s

Szoboszlai benched in predicted Liverpool lineup vs Fulham

Jurgen Klopp's reign at Liverpool has seen both peaks and valleys, but there is an ominous sense that the lionised manager's final few weeks on Merseyside will be categorised by misery and rueful resignation.

Failing to defeat Manchester United in commanding positions across recent trips to Old Trafford in the FA Cup and Premier League has unravelled Liverpool's thrilling campaign like a loose kite in the wind, with the buffeting struggles of the past few weeks resulting in successive Anfield losses against Atalanta (in the Europa League) and Crystal Palace (in the top-flight).

The Carabao Cup was won in February in what seemed like a galvanising tone-setter for the months to come, with the Reds fighting with such fervour amid persistent injury blows to fire on all cylinders. After overcoming such obstacles, Liverpool have inexplicably collapsed.

At Craven Cottage on Sunday, against Fulham, Klopp simply has to spark his team back into life, with Manchester City starting the weekend two points clear of their two contenders, with Arsenal also falling to an unexpected defeat last weekend.

Liverpool have an unusually near-clean bill of health, though Conor Bradley continues to recover from an ankle injury that will keep him out for a few more weeks.

Klopp has to rebound from the midweek Europa League exit against Atalanta, where the Merseysiders sparked spark and initiative, and might make three changes to the starting XI.

1 GK – Alisson

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alisson's return from injury has come at the perfect time for Liverpool, even if he has not quite had the happiest of returns over the past few games.

The Brazilian is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world and is marginally behind Alphonse Areola in the most reliable shot-stopper in the division, having saved 75.3% of the shots faced this season (Areola has saved 75.8%).

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool might have won at Atalanta on Thursday but the damage was done and it was a bleak performance, lacking the electricity and snap that was needed. Trent Alexander-Arnold's return to the starting line-up was a bright spark though.

The inventive right-back is always looking to make things happen and will provide his profligate forwards with everything they need to rediscover their shooting boots, hailed as a creative "genius" by reporter Neil Jones.

3 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool ace Ibrahima Konate.

Ibrahima Konate has done a superb job this season after Joel Matip's season was cut short by injury back in December, but the France international has been guilty of some poor performances recently.

He will need to have his wits about him against in-form shooter Rodrigo Muniz.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk has cut a disconsolate figure over the past few matches but he called for the fans to rally around the squad on Thursday night and, if Liverpool are to turn things around, he will be at the heart of the success.

5 LB – Andy Robertson

Andrew Robertson celebrates for Liverpool.

Possibly Liverpool's best performer throughout this recent poor patch, Andy Robertson will be crucial against Fulham, pumping energy and creativity into the team.

It's been a bit of a stop-start campaign for the Scotland skipper, but he's returning to his best recently and could be the catalyst on Sunday.

6 DM – Wataru Endo

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo

Wataru Endo signed for Liverpool from German side Stuttgart in a surprise £16m deal last summer, after missing out on Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo to Chelsea, and while he's largely been fantastic, the Japanese's recent showings have left much to be desired.

Still, he must anchor the midfield against the Cottagers, doing the groundwork for a few other midfielders to supply the forwards ahead of him.

7 CM – Harvey Elliott

Liverpool player Harvey Elliott.

Dominik Szoboszlai has fallen by the wayside, and while he can pick himself back up, he must be ditched for Harvey Elliott in this one, with the dynamic midfielder more than deserving of a spot in his favoured position.

The 21-year-old is truly a first-class prospect and has started to prove why he can play a lasting role in this Liverpool team, having been described as a "special talent" by The Athletic's James Pearce.

8 CM – Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister has been a monster of a signing for Liverpool and will need to harness the full scope of his world-class ability if he is to lead the club back toward the light.

What has happened to Mohamed Salah? The Egyptian talisman has been out of sorts for a while now and has toiled through recent fixtures.

That said, he's one of the deadliest forwards in Europe, having scored 24 goals and supplied 13 assists in all competitions this season.

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz in training

With electric pace and deft dribbling, Luis Diaz will be an important presence down the left channel, causing Fulham a host of problems and driving the play into promising positions to ensure Liverpool hit prolific form once again.

Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd could bid for £80m star with same agent as Mainoo

Fabrizio Romano has teased the possibility of Manchester United making a move for a star Premier League player this summer.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s latest Man Utd transfer targets

The Red Devils haven’t had the best of campaigns under Erik ten Hag, which has resulted in speculation over a new manager arriving at Old Trafford.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now have full control over sporting decisions, with Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, England boss Gareth Southgate, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou and Brentford’s Thomas Frank all being linked as possible replacements to the Dutchman.

Man Utd now want 50 year-old manager who embarrassed Erik ten Hag

He appears to be the new top target.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 27, 2024

Alongside the search for a potential new manager over the coming months, United may look to sign a plethora of new players in Ratcliffe’s first transfer window. However, Ratcliffe hinted that the Red Devils may not splash the cash.

Despite this, a number of targets have been named in the media in recent days, with contacts being intensified for Juventus defender Gleison Bremer. A bid has also been made to Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, whereas an important offer has been launched for AC Milan’s teenage forward Francesco Camarda.

Another forward who could be on the move this summer is Ivan Toney, and it looks as if Old Trafford may well be a potential destination.

Ivan Toney to Man Utd transfer claim

Talking to CaughtOffside in his Daily Briefing, transfer expert Romano has said that a Man Utd move for Brentford striker Toney “could be one to watch”, with the Red Devils set to discuss their options internally.

“It’s just one of the options to be considered and discussed internally. As I said here multiple times, Man United are still in early stages of the process to decide which striker they want to sign; experienced or young. Talks are gonna take place internally, Toney will be one of the names available on the market so could be one to watch.”

Toney has been heavily linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks, with reports after the January transfer window shut claiming that the Bees are holding out for £80m for the England international.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Currently, United have Rasmus Hojlund as their only fit and firing centre-forward, with Anthony Martial once again out through injury and on course to become a free agent in the summer.

Therefore, bringing in someone like Toney, who impressed for England against Belgium alongside Kobbie Mainoo, could be a shrewd move. In fact, the pair share the same CAA Stellar agency and Toney, aged 28, is now a proven Premier League goalscorer, so United could have the perfect blend of experience and youth with Hojlund and Toney.

Everton takeover update from behind scenes sources as Deloitte take charge

Another significant report has emerged regarding the potential takeover of Everton Football Club on Monday, with yet more concerning news coming the club's way.

Everton off-field latest

On the pitch, Sean Dyche's side picked up a welcome 2-0 victory at home to Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon, acting as a huge shot in the arm in the Premier League relegation battle. It was a massive step in the right direction, not to mention a welcome boost during a season that has seen so many obstacles to overcome.

Away from the action, Everton have had to deal with points deductions drama, initially seeing 10 points taken away, only to see that amount drop to six. Since then, another two points have been lopped off their tally in the league, although they are appealing that decision with the hope it will be reduced or erased.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri.

If that wasn't bad enough, the ongoing saga surrounding 777 Partners' purchase of the Blues has also acted as an unwelcome distraction to on-field matters, with Everton's proposed next owners continually seeing their credentials called into doubt.

While the majority of supporters want to see Farhad Moshiri leave as the current owner, it would also be foolish to accept whichever buyer comes along. The longer the situation surrounding 777 Partners goes on, the more of a concern it feels, and a new update will do little to change that feeling.

Fresh Everton takeover blow

Taking to X on Monday, journalist David Hellier admitted that the takeover of Everton is in danger of falling through, with Deliotte struggling to find new financial backers: "The latest on Everton's 777 deal: Everton FC’s main financial adviser is scrambling to find new backers to save a takeover of the club by US investment firm 777 Partners amid fears that the deal could collapse, sources say."

In his article for Bloomberg, Hellier says that "Deloitte has been seeking fresh funding from sports-focused investors and lenders to get 777’s deal over the line", adding that behind scenes sources believe the "current preference is to attract a partner for 777 instead of getting an entirely different bidder".

This really does sum up Everton this season, with so little to shout about even when a positive result is picked up in the Premier League. It feels like one negative after another for anyone associated with the club, and at this point, many may simply wish to see the back of 777.

Even if their takeover does go through, there have been too many worrying updates regarding them to instill genuine confidence in the fanbase, but then there is the issue of having to go all the way back to square one if a different buyer is found.

One day, the hope is that all these points deduction and takeover issues will have blown over, with Everton in a shiny new stadium and still in the Premier League, but for now, that still feels a long way off.

With a deal for OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo nearing completion, has reported that West Ham's attention is turning to Wan-Bissaka. The club could even secure a transfer for the Manchester United right-back "in the next days" if things go to plan. The flipside of that is it frees up the Old Trafford to side to secure Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.

United fans might consider Mazraoui, who previously worked with Erik ten Hag at Ajax, to be an upgrade on Wan-Bissaka following inconsistent performances, limited attacking output and frustrating injury trouble in recent seasons. As for West Ham, right-back recruitment is a must after releasing Ben Johnson and selling Thilo Kehrer so far this summer. The Hammers had been linked with England veteran Kieran Trippier earlier this week as Vladimir Coufal is suddenly the only specialist in the position.

By offloading Mason Greenwood, Donny van de Beek, Willy Kambwala and Alvaro Fernandez so far this summer, United have raised just over £50 million ($64m) in transfer fees – including add-ons. Incoming deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro have totalled around £95m ($121m) – also including add-ons.
