The Lionesses ended their Euro 2025 qualifying campaign with a nervy goalless draw against Sweden away from home on Tuesday as they secured a berth in the main competition next year. Despite booking a spot in the Euros, captain Williamson was unhappy with the team's overall performance throughout the qualifying campaign.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the Arsenal star said, "I've worked hard to be back here. This team knows how to fight, we've proved that over and over. But now we need to get back to our top level, there is a new top-level and we need to be able to find and get to it. The campaign has tested us but we have come through it. We were not able to top the group, which we are not happy about, but we qualified and that gives us a year to literally squeeze everything we can out of ourselves.

"High stakes games make players but you can't always work on what you need to. You have to play the game in front of you to get what you need. It is good preparation for us to have the friendlies in place, we know what is ahead of us next summer. We are reigning champions so we know we should qualify but we take pride in the fact that we have."

Manager Sarina Wiegman was also left disappointed with England's performance, especially against Sweden as they narrowly avoided defeat. The Dutch manager also outlined the areas where her team needs to improve to defend their title in Switzerland.

"Sadly…" – West Ham insider reveals club refusing to meet star’s demands

West Ham United could be about to lose one of their own after refusing to meet his wage demands, it has been revealed.

Moyes no longer the man for West Ham

There has been no shortage of discontent at the London Stadium this season, despite what from the outside appears to have been a reasonable Premier League campaign for the Hammers.

Seventh in the Premier League, the east London side fell to a 1-0 defeat in Germany against Freiburg but remain very much in their Europa League last 16 tie as they look to win successive European competitions, which would in turn hand them Champions League football for next season.

Earlier in the campaign, David Moyes revealed that he had been offered a new contract, but there has been increasing discontent around his position, and it is unclear whether he will continue beyond this summer, when his current deal expires.

"I've had really good conversations with the owners, with David Sullivan and Karren Brady," he said in February. "There's a contract there for me and I'm the one deciding I want to wait until the end of the season."

But that has not stopped speculation that he may leave, and sections of the Hammers fanbase believe that Moyes has taken them as far as he can, with the utilisation of the likes of Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus, in particular, being questioned.

And Moyes may not be the only one leaving the London Stadium this summer according to the latest reports.

Johnson contract talks stall

Also heading away from east London at the end of the campaign will be Ben Johnson, with the West Ham man out of contract as it stands and the club unwilling to match his wage demands.

The 24-year-old defender has appeared nine times in the Premier League this season, and appears to have fallen down the pecking order at the Olympic Stadium despite having made over 100 appearances for the club, with his last start coming in the 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal.

Ben Johnson in action for West Ham.

However, with his deal expiring in the summer, West Ham insiders Claret and Hugh claim that the Englishman is demanding around £50,000 per week to pen a new contract with the Hammers, something that the club are not going to sanction.

“We won’t pay that sort of money so sadly if he leaves, he leaves”, one club source is thought to have told the site, who dub the news as 'disappointing', and accuse Sullivan and co of handing higher wages to others 'who have done far less for the club than Ben Johnson'.

Johnson has risen through the ranks at West Ham United but may well have to look for another club for the first time in his senior career, with several clubs thought to be interested in adding the experienced Englishman to their ranks should he be available on a free transfer as rumoured.

Football isn't coming home – and Gareth Southgate must take some of the blame: Winners and losers as Three Lions come up short again in Euro 2024 final as sublime Spain strike a victory for football fans everywhere

La Roja could carve out another dominant era after this most deserved of triumphs, but the Three Lions' agonising wait for glory goes on and on

In the end, beauty beat the beast as attacking, daring football triumphed over pragmatism. Spain met their match in England for 45 minutes of the Euro 2024 final, but once the second half began, they turned up the volume and took the bull by the horns. And that was after Rodri had been taken off, too!

It mattered little that Spain had lost their best all-rounder for they still had the same structure and the same attacking ideals. And they could count on their truly brilliant, youthful wingers Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, who combined for their opening goal.

Spain could and should have put the game to rest there and then, but Gareth Southgate finally saw sense and made some attacking changes, which led to the mercurial Cole Palmer finding an equaliser from nowhere. England should have seized the momentum, but instead they sat back again and Spain passed their way through them, the unlikely figure of Mikel Oyarzabal firing La Roja back in front.

Spain's deserved win vindicates their decision to hire the unassuming Luis de la Fuente after parting with the blockbuster Luis Enrique following the last World Cup, and they have a very bright future ahead of them, with every chance of carving out another era of dominance.

England, meanwhile, must reflect on another missed opportunity. Gareth Southgate looks set to be remembered as the manager who lost two European Championship finals while Harry Kane is still waiting for his moment to lift a trophy.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Olympiastadion…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Spain's wing wonders

For 45 minutes, it appeared as if Spain's sensational wingers could actually be stopped. As it transpired, Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw had merely postponed the inevitable.

Yamal and Williams ran riot in the second half in Berlin, with the pair combining to break the deadlock just after the interval. They continued to create havoc thereafter and, if we're being critical, they probably should have scored another goal between them. But this most dynamic of duos were a joy to watch, just as they have been throughout the tournament.

And the best thing about Williams and Yamal is that they're both so young, they're only going to get better – which is such an exciting prospect for Spain (and us neutrals!), but a terrifying thought for full-backs all over the world.

    LOSER: Harry Kane

The England captain was never going to be dropped for the final, but it was always unlikely that Kane would rediscover his top form against the best side at the tournament. As such, he predictably had another miserable evening.

He touched the ball just 13 times, and one of those led to him being booked for a foul. He had just one shot, which was quickly blocked by Rodri, while his only positive contributions were in his own area, when he made a useful block.

pundit and former England women's international Alex Scott called for Kane to be hauled off at half-time, and that would have been a good call. Southgate eventually got him off on the hour-mark, which was the earliest he has taken Kane off at the tournament, and when he was replaced, England finally came alive.

Kane fronted up and did his interviews, putting on a brave face post-match. But he must be truly gutted. He has now lost two finals as England captain and is still yet to win a single trophy for club or country. Bizarrely, though, he will share the Golden Boot as joint-top scorer with five other players.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Luis de la Fuente

It's incredible to think about it now, but in March of last year, there were serious doubts in Spain over whether Luis de la Fuente was the right man to lead the national team, after a dismal 2-0 loss to Scotland in Glasgow.

However, La Roja haven't lost a competitive fixture since, winning the Nations League in the Netherlands before pulling off a thrilling Euro 2024 triumph in which they won every single game, beating the likes of Italy, Germany, France and England along the way.

De la Fuente is the main reason why. Granted, he has exceptional talent at his disposal, but the manager deserves so much credit for two reasons: putting his faith in youth, and instructing his players to take the game to every single team that had the misfortune to come up against them. As we saw at these Euros, such bravery is uncommon among international coaches.

For that reason, the game owes De la Fuente a huge debt of gratitude. From facing the sack to saving football in just over a year – not bad at all!

    LOSER: Gareth Southgate

Southgate has had two opportunities to end England's long, long wait for a trophy. He deserves a lot of credit for getting the team there and for changing the culture of the national team. But he will ultimately be remembered as the man that got to two finals and lost them both.

England should not be as distraught about this defeat as the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy on penalties. Spain were the better team both on paper and on the night. But once again, Southgate's in-game tactics left a lot to be desired. As in the previous matches, he only made changes when his team went behind, and England only started to ask serious questions of Spain after conceding.

Once Palmer had got England on level terms, they reverted to type, sitting back, allowing Spain to have the ball. They had extra-time on their minds. Southgate, in the end, was punished for being reactive and not proactive. The four crucial matches he has lost at major tournaments all have one common denominator: England had less of the ball than their opponents.

In the crunch moments, when he had to go for it, he once again lacked the necessary courage. This is likely to be his last act as England manager, even though the FA are said to want him to continue in the job. They might believe he could make it third time lucky. But even considering the huge progress he has made in his eight years in charge, that would seem like wishful thinking.

Nottingham Forest’s 6/10 star now needs to be benched

Despite leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to a well-taken finish from Chris Wood, Nottingham Forest failed to kill off the game away to Luton Town on Saturday afternoon, with Luke Berry firing home an 89th-minute equaliser to give Rob Edwards' side a valuable point.

The point, which was the Reds' first since the 2-0 win over West Ham United on February 17th, keeps them three points clear of the Hatters and moves them level on points with Sean Dyche's Everton.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno during a Premier League game.

After a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats, the draw at Kenilworth Road could be a valuable one by the end of the campaign.

However, the Tricky Trees could have come away with a rare away win had they finished clear-cut chances – a real theme of Forest's campaign so far.

Murillo

Players such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo impressed once more, but one Forest player failed to make an impact on the game, in what was his first start in 2024.

Ibrahim Sangare's performance v Luton in numbers

After featuring for the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations, Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangare was absent for multiple months and subsequently made his first start of the calendar year during yesterday's draw.

However, the 26-year-old failed to make a positive impact on the game, with the former PSV midfielder looking rusty and out of sorts for large spells during the encounter.

Sangare was dribbled past four times during his 90 minutes on the pitch, also losing nine duels with the Ivorian failing to make his mark and hold down the midfield for Nuno Espírito Santo's side.

The midfielder was just as poor in possession, completing just 17 passes and failing to complete a single dribble as he failed to create opportunities after regaining possession.

Many fans may well have been calling for Sangare to be introduced to the starting lineup. However, his display yesterday was one to forget, with the midfielder failing to take the opportunity with both hands.

His display at Kenilworth Road saw Nottinghamshire Live Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson give the 26-year-old a measly 6/10 rating – not what you'd expect from a player who cost the club £35m last summer.

The man to replace Sangare after the international break

The Reds now have a two-week break before taking on Crystal Palace at the City Ground, in what is yet another huge game as the club looks to cement their Premier League status.

However, after his latest display, Sangare should drop to the bench, with Argentinian Nicolas Dominguez more than deserving of a recall.

When comparing the two in the Premier League this season, Dominguez blows Sangare out of the water in multiple key areas in and out of possession.

The former Bologna midfielder averages four tackles won per 90 in the league this season, a tally that beats Sangare by 0.5 per game – with ball-winning one of Sangare's best qualities.

In possession, the gap between the two is astronomical, with Dominguez completing 84% of passes attempted all campaign, with Sangare trailing the Argentinian with his tally of 80%.

Dominguez's box-to-box nature sees him make more forward passes, as demonstrated in his tally of five per game, 1.1 more than the Ivorian who usually likes to regain possession before laying the ball off, allowing others to progress the play.

Sangare joined the City Ground side with a huge reputation and a lot of hype, but he's not being utilised in his natural 'number six' role, with his game suffering as a result. Nuno could be the man to unlock his abilities, but unfortunately, the Forest faithful are yet to see the towering gem at his best.

Victoria bowled themselves into a strong position on the opening day at the MCG by dismantling Queensland for 183.The wickets were shared around as Peter Siddle, still hoping to keep his name in the Test frame, and Jon Holland claimed three apiece while James Pattinson and debutant Will Sutherland claimed a brace each. Charlie Hemphrey’s half-century kept Queensland in the contest. It was Sutherland, with his third delivery on first-class debut, who made the opening incision in the 19th over, after sustained pressure from the Victoria quicks, when Bryce Street drove to point where fellow debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk took the catch – combined age for the wicket: 37.Sutherland’s second came when he found Matt Renshaw’s edge from around the wicket and Victoria’s morning became even better with the last ball of the session as Siddle had Marnus Labuschagne well caught at first slip for a 28-ball duck to leave Queensland 3 for 32 from 28 overs.Siddle struck again after the break when Nathan McSweeney was caught behind and the innings slipped to the depths of 7 for 99 as Pattinson and Holland claimed their first wickets. The ship was steadied somewhat by a 55-run stand between Hemphrey and Mark Steketee with Hemphrey compiling 64 from 130 deliveries before he was Pattinson’s second wicket.Holland wrapped up the innings as Steketee chopped on and Blake Edwards was caught at slip, but the final three wickets added 84 useful runs.On a day that was interrupted by showers, Victoria’s openers got through 6.4 overs before play was ended for the final time.

Wow: Dan Ashworth wants to mastermind £120m double transfer for Man Utd

Dan Ashworth wants to mastermind a huge double transfer swoop at Manchester United this summer, should he complete his move to Old Trafford.

Man Utd working on Dan Ashworth deal

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is looking to oversee huge changes at United in the coming months, bringing an end to what has been a poor spell since Sir Alex Ferguson moved on. Sunday's 3-1 defeat away to Manchester City highlighted the gulf in class between the two rivals, and there need to be major improvements both on and off the pitch.

One of Ratcliffe's primary aims currently is to secure the services of Dan Ashworth, who is currently on gardening leave after informing Newcastle United of his desire to leave the club and move to United. It is a complicated situation, however, with the Red Devils not willing to pay the Magpies £20m in compensation to bring him in this summer, meaning they could have to wait until 2026.

Dan Ashworth for England.

The Englishman is an extremely highly-rated figure in his field, excelling as the Magpies' sporting director, masterminding key transfers and working seamlessly alongside Eddie Howe. The Newcastle boss has called him "hugely important" and "really calming", and he could be a fantastic appointment by United.

The Red Devils haven't had a figure of Ashworth's calibre in place in recent years and it has shown in their recruitment, with huge sums of money spent on signings who have ultimately underwhelmed, including the likes of Jadon Sancho and Antony.

Antony

In comparison, rivals Liverpool have shown how it's done, with Michael Edwards a superb sporting director who brought in the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah for reasonable fees, proving the power of having a true specialist in the field.

Dan Ashworth eyes huge Man Utd double signing

According to an exciting update from Inter Live [via Sport Witness], Ashworth wants to bring both Gleison Bremer and Nicolo Barella to United in the summer, in a combined deal worth €140m (£120m).

The 52-year-old could oversee a "sensational transfer operation" at Old Trafford, as he looks to "plunder" two of Serie A's biggest club, snapping him up a couple of important players.

nicolo-barella-inter-milan-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-thomas-partey

Bremer and Barella could be exactly what United need this summer, with defensive and midfield reinforcements required, in order to significantly improve the spine of Erik ten Hag's team.

The former has been a rock at the heart of Juventus' defence this season, winning an average of 2.7 aerial duels per game across 26 Serie A appearances this season, and at 26, he represents a younger alternative to Maguire, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans.

Meanwhile, Barella has been one of the best midfielders in Italy for some time now, winning 51 caps for his country and playing a key role in Inter Milan reaching the Champions League final last year. He could provide both the technical class and legs that are sorely lacking in the middle of the park at United currently, with only Bruno Fernandes (3.0) averaging more key passes per game in the league than him (1.1) this season.

This may all be dependent on whether United are able to acquire Ashworth's services, of course, but he would be a significant capture if the club can snap him up, helping them slowly return to the top of English football.

Liverpool must brutally ditch player who earns 6x more than Kelleher

Liverpool are a club that have recruited players excellently in recent seasons, with the club currently reaping the rewards as they hunt for a second Premier League title in four years.

Players such as Andy Robertson and Wataru Endo joined the club for relatively cheap fees below the £20m mark, with the pair playing vital roles in the bid to give Jürgen Klopp a brilliant send-off in his final campaign at Anfield.

The pair have made 15 and 21 appearances respectively in the league this season, with the Reds currently in pole position for the title, sitting two points clear of Manchester City and Arsenal with nine games remaining.

Andrew Robertson celebrates for Liverpool.

However, despite their success in the market, the club have made one or two errors with players who have arrived at the club.

One player in particular has failed to make any impact, with the club needing to shift him off the wage bill when the season has concluded.

Adrian's stats for Liverpool

After leaving West Ham United as a free agent back in the summer of 2019, Spanish 'keeper Adrian agreed a deal to join Liverpool as a backup on a deal until the summer of 2021.

His first campaign at Anfield would be his best, with the shot-stopper making 17 appearances in all competitions, including three starts in the Champions League.

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian.

Adrian's game time would decrease significantly after the 2019/20 season, with the Spaniard only making six appearances under Klopp, with the 37-year-old dropping to third-choice after the emergence of youngster Caoimhin Kelleher.

Kelleher's increased game time would see the former West Ham goalkeeper only make one appearance in 2021/22, coming in the 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Championship side Preston North End in October 2021.

Despite his lack of minutes, he was rewarded with a new deal that would run until 2024, with the experienced 'keeper only still at Anfield to keep cover for Alisson and Irish international Kelleher.

He's since only made one appearance for the Reds, coming in the 2022/23 Community Shield triumph over Manchester City, with Adrian unlikely to add to his 26 appearances for the club with his contract expiring in June of this year.

Adrian's weekly wage in 2024

According to Spotrac, 37-year-old Adrian currently earns a weekly wage of £60k-per-week, a figure that is six times higher than that of current number two Kelleher, who only takes home a reported £10k-per-week.

His weekly wage is astronomical given his lack of minutes under Klopp in recent seasons, with youngster Kelleher also deserving of a hefty pay rise considering his measly wage in comparison to Adrian.

With the Spaniard out of contract in June, the club should even consider renewing it as the club could be better off with a younger alternative from the youth setup or a cheaper, experienced, option, which in turn would save them over £3m a year in wages.

The former West Ham 'keeper has been a great servant during his time at Anfield, but unfortunately, the club need to be brutal to cut the wage bill to keep improving an already very talented playing squad.
