Tottenham could move for attacker in one of summer’s big transfer stories

Tottenham could be a part of one of the "biggest transfer stories" this summer as news comes out of N17 this week.

Lange making transfer plans to sign winger for Spurs

Technical director Johan Lange enjoyed quite the debut transfer window at Spurs in January, sealing early deals for Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin before eventually helping the club to hijack Barcelona's move to Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall.

The Dane is now making preparations for the summer window alongside Chief Football Officer Scott Munn, with ex-managing director Fabio Paratici also thought to be assisting Spurs on a consultancy basis.

Tottenham apparently want a star winger as their major signing of the next transfer window, leading to their reported interest in the likes of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze and Wolves winger Pedro Neto lately.

This is despite the Lilywhites already possessing an abundance of quality out wide, with Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner all proving brilliant in recent weeks.

Spurs have the option to sign Werner permanently from RB Leipzig for around £15 million, so it will be interesting to see if they trigger that clause given the German's fine start to life in north London.

In any case, Ange Postecoglou's side do in fact end up going for another wide player, they have plenty of options – with pundit Paul Robinson telling Tottenham News that Eze would be a great capture.

Ange Postecoglou

“I think he’d be a great signing for Tottenham, I mean we’ve seen his qualities in the Premier League this season,” said Robinson.

"He’s 25, with his attacking prowess, he has the ability to play in the midfield but more of an attacking midfielder. You look at the options Tottenham have got in those areas, Brennan Johnson’s come in – would they have signed Eze last year ahead of Johnson? There’s an argument potentially they would have done if they could have done."

Tottenham to look at signing Nico Williams

Now, though, it appears another option for Spurs could be Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

Spain'sNicoWilliamscelebrates scoring their sixth goal

The £43 million winger has bagged three goals and seven assists this season, with Chelsea and Arsenal thought to be real admirers. According to journalist Ryan Taylor of The Mirror, Spurs could look to sign Williams ahead of their London rivals, in what he describes as potentially one of the biggest transfer stories this summer.

The Spaniard looks set to be a hot commodity this summer, and his £43m release clause may well be a luring factor for Tottenham.

Man Utd struck gold with “insanely good” gem who’s value has soared 168%

Manchester United’s questionable transfer history over the past decade has been frequently highlighted by the underperformance of those individuals on the field.

Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are all examples of stars who have flopped since signing for huge fees.

However, there are a few players who have been hits since joining and have even risen in value.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the star in Erik ten Hag’s squad who has been a success since joining.

Diogo Dalot’s early career at Man United

Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot joined United in 2018 from Porto after impressing as a flying right-back in just eight games for the first team, where he provided three assists and was “insanely good,” as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig.

Jose Mourinho forked out £19m to acquire the youngster's services, and in his first season, he started 12 league games, featuring as both a right back and a left back.

Diogo Dalot

In the following season, Dalot was sent on loan to AC Milan, where he once again interchanged between both full-back positions over 33 matches.

His return from Italy saw the former Porto star feature much more frequently in the United starting XI, featuring in 19 games from the off, and at the end of the 2021/22 season, he was estimated to be worth close to the amount that United signed him for – €20m (£17m), as per Transfermarkt.

Diogo Dalot under Ten Hag

The arrival of Ten Hag has seen the 24-year-old enjoy his best spell with the Red Devils badge on his chest, as last season he started 24 matches, scored one goal, and registered two assists.

With the absence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka for most of the season, Dalot has been a consistent performer for the boss this time around, starting 22 games already in the league and becoming the first-choice right-back.

Diogo Dalot

According to CIES Football Observatory, Dalot is now estimated to be worth £51m, with his increased inclusion in the starting XI seeing his value rocket this season, to the point where he’s one of the most valuable assets in the squad.

Dalot, Antony, Onana

One of the main reasons why his value is so high is simply due to his versatility, which allows him to thrive at both right and left back. Not many full-backs have the ability to perform with both feet while being press-resistant at the same time, and with Luke Shaw’s continuous injury problems, having Dalot in the squad gives Ten Hag so much breathing room in terms of squad selection.

Dalot can also drift into plenty of different roles, and he isn’t restricted to just one playing style. For example, he can drift inside to overload the midfield while also providing options on the overlap, which is extremely desirable in modern football.

Identifying these traits and attributes early on in Dalot’s career was a masterstroke, and signing him for just £19m – a value that has now increased by 168% – has been one of the best deals in recent times for United.

Bamford ditched by Farke in Leeds predicted lineup vs Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds United will aim to leapfrog Ipswich Town on Friday night into second spot in the Championship, before the Tractor Boys then face off against Cardiff City the day after.

Still, Leeds will be confident they can break into the automatic promotion picture regardless of Kieran McKenna's men continuing to pick up big results – Daniel Farke's men just keeping their fingers crossed that the Suffolk-based overachievers can slip up again soon, whilst the Whites continue to soar.

Beating Stoke City 1-0 in an unconvincing manner last match could see Farke change up the Leeds lineup though regardless of the victories not yet drying up, with Patrick Bamford's spot in the side potentially up for grabs.

The German boss could make two changes from the side that just about got over the line against Steven Schumacher's Potters for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday, with one 'immense' Leeds star being lined up for a return to the XI…

1 GK – Illan Meslier

Illan Meslier

Illan Meslier will keep his spot in-between the sticks for Leeds' on Friday night away at Wednesday, with the French shot-stopper coming to the rescue against Stoke last match.

Meslier made six saves in total to shut out Schumacher's visitors, enabling Leeds to pick up a hard-fought 1-0 win.

2 RB – Connor Roberts

Burnley right-back Connor Roberts.

Connor Roberts would come into the Leeds team for the 1-0 victory versus the Potters, with Archie Gray dropping out for the Burnley loanee to come into the XI.

It proved to be a smart move by Farke to bring the 28-year-old defender into the line-up, the Whites number 33 winning all but one of his duels at Elland Road in the narrow win whilst also notching up two key passes as a creator playing out from the back.

3 CB – Joe Rodon

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

Roberts' fellow Welsh compatriot in Joe Rodon also excelled versus Stoke, calmly orchestrating moves from deep, coming away from his 90 minutes on the Elland Road turf with 88 touches amassed and 64 accurate passes pulled off.

Likewise, the Tottenham Hotspur loanee also battled bravely to ensure Leeds kept a clean sheet even when Stoke showed signs of confidence in the second 45 minutes – winning 100% of his aerial duels in the 1-0 win, whilst also completing two tackles.

4 CB – Ethan Ampadu

Ethan Ampadu will be retained for the awkward test away at Wednesday, forming a frightening centre-back duo with Rodon in the heart of defence.

The imposing Leeds number four has even been handed the captain's armband by Farke this season, with the former Chelsea man playing like a leader against the Potters.

Making seven clearances in total to completely kill Stoke going forward, the confident 23-year-old also misplaced just five of his 74 passes as a calm head.

5 LB – Junior Firpo

Leeds defender Junior Firpo.

The first change to Farke's lineup could come in the form of Junior Firpo being thrown back into the XI, with Sam Byram sacrificed for the ex-Barcelona man to come back in.

The 30-year-old left-back didn't let himself down whatsoever in the Stoke win – winning ten duels overall in the contest – but Farke could well want to protect his injury-prone defender with games coming thick and fast.

Firpo, who was once described as "immense" by Conor McGilligan of the One Leeds Fan Channel, is a worthy replacement for the ex-Norwich City man having notched up four assists this season from the left-back spot.

6 CM – Ilia Gruev

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

Ilia Gruev won't be having restless nights in the build-up to the clash away at the Owls about his position in Farke's side however, with the former Werder Bremen man making one of the two holding spots his own in recent weeks.

The Bulgarian midfielder was as cool as ever on the ball against Stoke, making just seven stray passes from his measured 90 minutes.

With Danny Rohl's side wanting the Hillsborough masses to be loud and intimidating to potentially throw off the visiting Whites, Gruev's focused and level-headed approach could be key.

7 CM – Glen Kamara

Glen Kamara will line up alongside Gruev for the tricky test of beating the Owls on their own patch, the former Rangers man competent again in the Stoke win as an unflashy presence.

The 28-year-old midfielder would make a combined four interceptions and tackles to thwart the Potters foraying forward, whilst also completing 45 accurate passes to push his team up the field.

8 RM – Daniel James

Leeds forward Dan James.

Leeds would have been relieved to have Daniel James back in their ranks in the narrow win over Stoke, the former Manchester United winger electric in the match and ultimately was the goalscoring hero that sealed the three points.

The Welsh attacker will want to catch out Rohl's hosts tomorrow, potentially adding another goal to his ever-increasing season tally which currently stands at 11.

9 CAM – Georginio Rutter

Georginio Rutter

Georginio Rutter will stick it out in the position just behind the lone striker for the clash at Hillsborough, the dynamic Leeds number 25 teeing up James to score his sublime winner last time out.

Accumulating four key passes in total as a creative force against the Potters, Wednesday will have to be switched on from minute one to contain the brilliance of Leeds' standout Frenchman.

10 LM – Crysencio Summerville

Crysencio Summerville.

Rutter and James being on their A-Game meant Crysencio Summerville's quiet showing wasn't as obvious or impactful to the Whites clinching another win, the former Feyenoord youngster having a rare off-day last time out.

Still, with the 22-year-old bagging 15 strikes this season in total, there's no chance that Farke ditches his explosive Dutchman especially with Jaidon Anthony remaining unavailable for selection.

Newcastle flop who left after costing £7.5m a goal outscored Isak last season

It hasn't been the best of seasons for Newcastle United this year.

Eddie Howe's side have been decimated by a slew of injuries and have struggled to compete domestically and in Europe.

That said, there have been some bright spots for the Toon, notably Swedish striker Alexander Isak, who continues to wow fans and pundits alike.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

However, the fan favourite was actually outscored by a former Newcastle flop last year.

Alexander Isak's Newcastle career in numbers

Newcastle signed Isak from La Liga side Real Sociedad in August 2022 for a club-record fee of £63m, and while that's certainly a lot of money, it's been well spent.

Described as a "different level" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the former Borussia Dortmund star took no time at all to get up to speed with life in the Premier League, scoring his first goal for the club on his debut, which just happened to be at Anfield.

While injuries certainly disrupted his first season with the Magpies, a final haul of ten goals and three assists in just 27 games is rather impressive for a striker's first year in the league.

The 24-year-old has had to deal with yet more injury problems this year. However, despite that and the team's overall poor form, the Sweden international has still scored 16 goals in 29 appearances for the club, giving him a seriously impressive average of 0.55 goals per game and fully justifying his hefty £120k-per-week wage.

However, as impressive as Isak has been since moving to Tyneside, a former Toon flop actually outscored him last season.

What Yoshinori Muto cost Newcastle

The player in question is Japan international Yoshinori Muto, who joined the Magpies in a £9.5m transfer from Bundesliga side Mainz in the summer of 2018.

The former FC Tokyo ace had a relatively successful spell in Germany, racking up 23 goals and 11 assists for the team in just 72 appearances. Unfortunately for the Toon, he didn't get anywhere near this rate of return in England.

Newcastle striker Yoshinori Muto

In total, the Setagaya-born attacker, who was earning £54k-per-week at the time, scored just two goals in his 28 appearances for the club, which amounted to a grand total of 943 minutes of football.

After two years of poor performances, he was sent on a season-long loan to Spanish outfit SD Eibar, where he continued to underwhelm, scoring three goals and providing two assists in 28 appearances.

He was finally moved on in 2021 after returning from his loan spell, meaning that he cost the club around £5.6m in wages, or around £15.1m, when his transfer fee is considered.

Therefore, he cost the Magpies a whopping £7.5m-per-goal, £541k-per-appearance, or £16k-per-minute.

Yoshinori Muto's record after leaving Newcastle

With how badly his spell in the northeast went, fans might have expected the 5 foot 10 attacker to continue to disappoint at his next club, but that couldn't have been further from the truth.

In all, Muto has scored 23 goals and provided 23 assists in 86 appearances for Vissel Kobe, and his return of 11 goals and 12 assists last season is better than what Isak could muster in black and white, albeit in a much tougher league.

Newcastle could sell a player who's earning 9x more than Lewis Miley

The experienced Toon star needs to be moved on this year.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 13, 2024

In the current day, the striker has played two matches in the J-League which has just kicked off, failing to score yet from 129 minutes of action.

Although now performing rather away from St James', signing Muto from Mainz in 2018 proved to be one of Newcastle's worst transfers in recent memory, and one the new ownership probably wouldn't have made.

Liverpool may regret losing Drogba 2.0 who was sold for less than Henderson

Over the years, Liverpool's academy has produced some of the Premier League's best talents, with players such as Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and, more recently, Trent Alexander-Arnold all emerging from the youth ranks.
Additionally, they have also managed to harness the talents of other clubs' players who didn't quite cut it in their teams or who the Reds saw potential in.
Some examples of these players are Harvey Elliott and Raheem Sterling. The pair each came from Championship teams before seeing their talents developed further with the Merseysiders.
Although the latter chose to leave the club in 2015 in order to join Manchester City for a fee worth a reported £49m, Elliott has become part of the furniture at Anfield.

Liverpool's Harvey Elliott.

The 20-year-old recently made his 100th appearance for the Reds against Luton in the Premier League. During that time, he has amassed a total of 15 goal contributions and, at times, has managed to cement himself within Jurgen Klopp's first team.
This season has been the youngster's most prolific. It seems that, as he gets older, he is becoming more mature and focused on his game and is managing to find his place within the squad.
Across the 2023/24 campaign, he has managed to score two goals and provide three assists for his teammates, while it is also looking likely that he could be featuring in Liverpool's upcoming Carabao Cup final due to the recent injuries the Reds have suffered in the centre of the park.

Despite Elliott's Liverpool career thus far going swimmingly, aside from the odd injury here and there, there have been some Liverpool youngsters who weren't given the chance to flourish under Klopp's wing.
An example of one of these fringe figures is that of Taiwo Awoniyi. The current Nottingham Forest striker joined the club in 2015 at just 18 years old and endured many loan spells during his time on Merseyside, prior to exploding elsewhere…

Taiwo Ayoniyi's Liverpool career

The Nigeria international joined Liverpool for a fee in the region of £400k from Imperial Academy in his home country.
When asked about what it meant to be joining Liverpool, he said the following: "This is the biggest club in the world, and I’m privileged to be here. I’ll try to develop myself very well so that when I come back to Liverpool I’ll be able to add value to the team."
Despite just joining the club, the then-teenager was instantly loaned out to German side, FSV Frankfurt.

That swift exit came about as the youngster was having problems with regard to acquiring a work permit to play football in the UK. These problems would be set to follow him throughout his Liverpool tenure.
After joining the club, the attacker only managed to appear a total of 14 times for Frankfurt and only amassed a total of two goal contributions during that time.
Then, for his next six seasons at Liverpool, he was loaned out to various clubs across Europe, including spending two seasons at Belgian club, Royal Excel Mouscron. It was during those two seasons in Belgium that the Nigerian had his most prolific time in front of goal – netting 21 times in 47 games.
During the 2020/21 campaign, he spent his time on loan with Bundesliga side, Union Berlin, and made a total of nine goal contributions during his spell with the club.

His performance over the season ended up being enough that the striker managed to finally get a permanent move away from Liverpool after the German side bought him for a fee of £6.5m.
This move occurred just after he was finally granted a work permit to play football in the UK after spending six years of his professional career bouncing around other clubs.
Awoniyi's permanent transfer away from Liverpool was expected. However, the fact that the striker was sold for less than ageing midfielder Jordan Henderson – who departed for Al Ettifaq on a £12m deal last summer – is something the Reds may live to regret.

At the time, this was Union Berlin's club-record fee, and it seemed as if it was money well spent, as, despite not having the most prolific of campaigns the season prior, he managed to score a total of 20 goals in all competitions and assist a total of five times during the 2021/22 season.
This sudden burst of form was by far and away the most prolific of the attacker's career and, to this day, it still stands as his strongest goal-scoring season.
His performances for Union Berlin didn't, however, go unnoticed. After Forest's promotion from the Championship in the same season, the club were looking to make some additions to strengthen their side.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

This resulted in Forest making a total of 30 signings across the season, with Awoniyi being among those.

Why Jamie Carragher loves Awoniyi

Since arriving in Nottingham for a fee worth £17.5m, Awoniyi has been a constant figure within the Garibaldi squad. During his time at the City Ground so far, he has managed a total of 46 appearances and has contributed to 20 goals.
Although he hasn't yet found the form he showed in his final season at Union Berlin, he has cemented himself within the Forest system superbly, even leading to praise from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher who has compared him to Premier League icon, Didier Drogba.

Didier Drogba

Discussing Awoniyi's strike against Southampton back in May, Carragher exclaimed: "He reminded me of Drogba as soon as I saw the goal. Absolutely brilliant. I've been in that position as a defender. The turn – and bang. Brilliant."
Drogba, of course, enjoyed a remarkable stint in English football at Chelsea – across two spells – notably scoring 164 goals and providing 88 assists in 381 games for the Blues, while also winning a plethora of major honours, including the Champions League in 2012.
Awoniyi has a way to go to emulate the Ivorian's heroics, although the 6 foot marksman has already scored more than half of the goals he bagged in England's top-flight last season, netting six times from just 14 outings.

His form thus far sparked even more talk from pundits and Carragher doubled down on the praise he lauded the former Liverpool man with last season.
"The first touch is unbelievable centre-forward play. Holding the centre-back off because don’t forget he’s got no space, he knows the goalkeeper is going to be converging on him," Carragher said.
"I’m a huge fan of his. His goals towards the end of the season kept Forest up and it could do the same again."

Liverpool's "special" £4m star is now worth 1175% more

Jurgen Klopp has shaped this rising talent into one of the Premier League’s most exciting prospects.

By
Angus Sinclair

Feb 23, 2024

Time will only tell whether Liverpool will live to regret selling the promising youngster after years of chasing a work permit for him.
One thing is for sure, however, and that is the fact that we will likely be seeing the £50k-per-week hotshot in England's top flight for many years to come.

No surgery, 'expect Bumrah to be back sooner than later' – Bharat Arun

Bowling coach expects team to adopt a ‘horses for courses’ approach to choose between Ashwin and Jadeja

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2019Jasprit Bumrah’s injured back might not require surgery “as of now”, according to India bowling coach Bharat Arun. India’s fast bowling spearhead is, however, unlikely to play a part in the remainder of India’s home season, which features limited-overs series against Bangladesh, West Indies and Sri Lanka over the next three months.Earlier in October, Bumrah visited the UK with the National Cricket Academy’s chief physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik, and consulted specialists to treat the back problem. The BCCI hasn’t made public the nature of Bumrah’s problem, except saying in a press release that the injury was “minor”.ALSO READ: ‘Is it Ashwin and Jadeja or Jadeja and Ashwin?'”Fast bowling is an unnatural activity. Despite our best efforts there can be no guarantees. We expect Bumrah to be back sooner than later, hopefully in time for the New Zealand Test series that is our next big challenge,” Arun told the . “As of now, he doesn’t need surgery.”Bumrah’s absence hasn’t affected the performance of India’s fast bowling group, though, with Umesh Yadav stepping up to join Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma to form a solid combine against South Africa in the recent Test series.Arun, who has been working with the bowlers since 2015, was particularly impressed with Umesh’s comeback – he picked up 11 wickets in two Tests, a majority of those a reward for attacking the stumps.”He’s strong and quick and now he is bowling in better channels, making the batsman play around the off stump,” Arun said. “He’s got reverse swing, has a nasty short ball. He and Shami, who is fast, accurate and dangerous, are a potent combination.”Arun also conceded that there might be no immediate end in sight to the battle between R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to be the No. 1 Test spinner. Chances are the team management will go in for a “horses for courses” approach should they have to pick just one of the two. While their performances have been neck-and-neck with the ball, the team management has in the past considered Jadeja’s batting and fielding contributions as a valuable add-on, especially overseas.”He’s among the best spinners in the world, top class, and is approaching 400 Test wickets,” Arun said of Ashwin. “In fact, Ashwin went to England and Australia as our No. 1 spinner and then ran into fitness issues. Ravindra Jadeja grabbed his chance, giving us control with the ball, solidity with the bat and fielding brilliantly.”Away from home, if we have to pick one of the two in the eleven, it will be horses for courses looking at the conditions and the opposition. Then we have Kuldeep Yadav who picked five with his wrist spin in his last Test, in Sydney. We have an embarrassment of riches.”
