Newcastle keen on signing Premier League ace after Joelinton injury blow

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing an "outstanding" player this month, with internal talks held over a move to St James' Park.

Newcastle transfer & injury news

It's fair to say that this has been a season to forget for the Magpies so far, having had such high hopes of doing special things in 2023/24. There have been plenty of reasons for Newcastle's struggles, whether it be finding it hard to adapt to midweek Champions League games, expectations from supporters putting more pressure on the team, and of course, injuries.

Endless fitness issues have held Eddie Howe's side back badly in both the Premier League and Europe, and Joelinton's recent groin issue means he could even miss the rest of the campaign, acting as a massive blow.

It looks as though Newcastle are looking to act fast to find a replacement for the Brazilian, with Bournemouth ace Philip Billing one player who has been linked with a move to St James' this month. Kalvin Phillips is still a potential target, too, although talks over a switch do appear to have cooled.

Newcastle want Amadou Onana

According to an update from reliable journalist Luke Edwards on X, Newcastle are keen on signing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, as they look to make up for the loss of Joelinton:

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

He wrote: "Newcastle United looking into signing Everton’s Amadou Onana to solve midfield problem."

A loan move is potentially on the cards, with a temporary switch then a possibility in the summer, allowing Newcastle to see if he is worth persevering with at that point.

Onana could be a brilliant signing by the Magpies in the January window, with the Belgian someone who has so many attributes that could appeal to Howe, whether it be his physical prowess or technical ability.

Given his age and stature within the Toffees side (he is an ever-present when fit under Sean Dyche, the 22-year-old has so much long-term potential, too, and with Everton already docked 10 points this season and threatening to face further punishments, he could feel that Goodison Park is not the best place to stay. He has been hailed as "outstanding" by journalist Connor O'Neill, while former Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has said of him:

"He's a strong personality. He never hides, he asks for the ball and he dares. He is one of the most talented young players in Europe."

Onana could be an excellent replacement for Joelinton between now and the end of the season, providing similar levels of power and influence in the middle of the park – he has averaged 2.6 tackles and 2.2 aerial wins per game in the league this season – and much like the current Newcastle hero, he could be a good foil for the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff.

Should he come in and be a big success, the Magpies would be foolish not to consider signing him permanently in the summer, with the Belgium international someone who should only get better in the coming years.

"Is Marinakis just hooked?" – Reporter baffled by news coming from Forest

It's been a busy deadline day at the City Ground so far, with Nottingham Forest kicking things off by signing teenage striker Rodrigo Ribeiro on loan from Sporting with an option to buy, having already tied up a temporary move for Borussia Dortmund's Gio Reyna on Wednesday night.

Manager Nuno, who's overseeing his first transfer window at the club after his appointment in December, has also been pursuing a new goalkeeper, and it looks like Matz Sels will be his man after Forest agreed a deal worth €6m, or £5.1m, to sign him from Strasbourg. Sels is now travelling to the UK to undergo a medical and complete a move that will likely spell the end of interest in Sam Johnstone at Crystal Palace.

Somewhat remarkably, the 31-year-old will become the third different goalkeeper signed by Forest this season after owner Evangelos Marinakis spent around £11.5m on Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos during last summer's transfer window.

Sels move baffles one reporter

Reacting to the move for Sels on Twitter, presenter and pundit Jack Collins appeared to criticise Marinakis for his reliance on transfers to solve every problem in his squad. With two comparable stoppers already on the books, he feels that the transfer makes no "sense" unless it heralds an imminent departure.

Sels shares same issue as Turner and Vlachodimos

First things first, you can see why Nuno wanted to bring in his own man between the sticks. After all, it's not his fault that neither of Steve Cooper's 2023 signings have impressed.

While Turner has started every Premier League game under the Portuguese, he had a five-game spell out of the side before Cooper's sacking, with Vlachodimos drafted in. Neither has been able to definitively make the spot their own, and that's partly because they've combined for the poorest shot-stopping record in the division.

The big question now, then, is whether Sels is the answer. Well, unfortunately, he too has under-performed this season, letting in two more goals than 'expected'.

Nuno Espirito Santo could look to bolster his attack before the end of deadline day.

Even if he does ultimately offer a marginal improvement on what came before, you can see why Collins believes the investment isn't justified. Perhaps it was better to hold fire until the summer and press the reset button in that position, but Nuno clearly thought he couldn't afford to wait.

Kylian Mbappe branded the 'Kevin Durant of football' as fans savagely claim Real Madrid's newest signing 'won't get respect' he craves at Santiago Bernabeu

Kylian Mbappe is finally heading to Real Madrid, but fans have branded him the 'Kevin Durant of football' following the transfer announcement.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

In 2016, NBA star Kevin Durant made the free-agency move to the Golden State Warriors from the Oklahoma City Thunder, after the Warriors had made it to two straight NBA finals and were considered the closest thing to a super team. Football fans have now likened Mbappe's Real Madrid move to Durant's and have claimed that the Frenchman "won't get the respect" that he craves even if he wins the Champions League with the 15-time champions, who have won the title twice in the last three seasons.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe has already laid down his legacy on the sport despite still only being at the young age of 25. He has one World Cup to his name and also possibly the greatest performance in a World Cup final, along with 15 domestic trophies with Paris Saint-Germain, as possibly their best player ever. The Frenchman has received a lot of criticism for his inability to win the Champions League so far in his career and has only come close once, in 2020, when PSG lost in the final to Bayern Munich.

Rangers monster who won 10 duels starred alongside Matondo & Cantwell

Glasgow Rangers moved to within goal difference of the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

The Light Blues secured all three points thanks to goals from Rabbi Matondo and Todd Cantwell, either side of an equaliser from Bojan Miovski, as Philippe Clement's side moved to 58 points – level with Celtic ahead of their game on Wednesday.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Whilst the two goalscorers will get the plaudits, and rightly so, for their strikes to win the match for the Scottish giants, they were not the only impressive performers for the Light Blues.

Central defender John Souttar was brought into the starting line-up for the injured Leon Balogun and showed what he is all about with an excellent display for the Gers, as he was the real hero on the night.

Matondo and Cantwell's match-winning contributions

Ross McCausland took advantage of a slip from a defender and drove towards the box before lashing an effort at Kelle Roos, who was forced to parry the ball straight to Matondo for the opening goal.

However, the Welsh whiz then missed a huge opportunity to make it 2-0 before half-time. He skipped past two defenders with a brilliant piece of skill but took far too long to get his shot away, with Cyriel Dessers in space to his right, and slipped at the vital moment.

Cantwell was the eventual match-winner as the former Norwich City star was the quickest to react to a save from Roos to bundle the ball into the back of the net on the rebound.

The English whiz also created two chances for his teammates but did lose 100% (3/3) of his duels throughout the game, as Aberdeen found it too easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

John Souttar's defensive dominance

Souttar's centre-back partner, Connor Goldson, had a nightmare for the away side's goal as Miovski got the better of him far too easily from a long ball but the Scotland international avoided any such issues.

The former Hearts titan was colossal at the back for the Gers as he dealt with the majority of the problems that Aberdeen caused through their attackers.

As you can see in the table above, the Light Blues monster dominated the opposition in physical battles as he won two of his three on the deck and eight of his 12 in the air.

His ability in the air was needed towards the end of the match as the Dons piled the pressure on after Dujon Sterling's red card reduced the hosts to ten men, as the towering defender won his duels to prevent flick-ons and knock-downs around the box.

Souttar was also composed in his use of the ball. He completed 87% of his attempted passes (74/85), six of his ten long passes, and 100% of his attempted dribbles (1/1).

The 27-year-old enforcer's vital defensive work played a key role in the win as the Gers won by a slender one-goal margin, which meant that any slip-up at the back could have resulted in points being dropped.

Instead of slip-ups, Souttar's footing was assured throughout and that is why he was the real hero of the night for Clement with his outstanding performance, starring alongside Matondo and Cantwell.

Surging Pakistan look to sustain momentum against Afghanistan

Pakistan need to win to give themselves the best chance of upstaging England and clinching a semi-final berth

Hussey: Beating Pakistan can bring great joy for Afghanistan fans

Big PictureAfghanistan came with a promise to upset at least two teams in this World Cup but they have spent their campaign dogged by one issue after another, on and off the field, and are winless in seven games. They are rooted to the bottom of the table, with the high point of their campaign the game against India, where they came within two blows of a historic victory. However, they slipped back into old ways in the game against Bangladesh, in which they fell short by 62 runs. They will now play for pride against Pakistan, a neighbouring country with which the rivalry is more intense than just a cricketing one.The Pakistan camp, in the meantime, has suddenly found its best form, buoyed after inflicting a first defeat upon New Zealand. Their World Cup dreams are well and truly alive, and comparisons to the 1992 World Cup campaign have now reached fever pitch. All of that will fade, however, if Pakistan fail to beat Afghanistan and Bangladesh, two sides who did not play the 1992 version of this competition. There are still lots of ifs and buts but for now the proposition is simple – Pakistan needs to win their remaining two games to have a realistic chance of a place in the semi-finals.Afghanistan on the other hand are living a dream in playing the World Cup a second time – a decade earlier, that would have been hardly within the realms of probability. Their bowling has given them a belief and confidence enough to pose a threat to any batting line-up, but the batting hasn’t quite lived up to that standard. Even when they did get close to inflicting an upset or two, the absence of a finishing touch was notable. However, they should remember they beat Pakistan in a warm-up game in Bristol before the start of the tournament, and coach Phil Simmons will be assuring them they can repeat the feat in the World Cup proper.Form guideAfghanistan LLLLL (Last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan WWLLWIn the spotlightPakistan have already offloaded Shoaib Malik and brought in Haris Sohail. The move proved vital in making the middle order work and gave much needed stability to the batting line-up. The spotlight remains on another senior hand: with Mohammad Hafeez stuttering and unable to capitalise on his decent start, he will feel the pressure. He fell to part-time spinners in three of Pakistan’s last four games, playing poor shots, requiring his team-mates to bail the side out.Rashid Khan struggled to pick wickets•Getty Images

Rashid Khan has been off-colour, despite his high billing. The legspinner has averaged 78.5 with four wickets in six bowling innings so far. In his ODI career, he averages under 18 and he was meant to be a key campaigner for Afghanistan this tournament. But ever since the assault he suffered against England, conceding more runs than any bowler ever has at a World Cup, he appears to have lost confidence. At Leeds, the conditions seem unfavourable for spinners, as they average 45.7 with an economy of 5.4 in the last five completed ODIs at the venue. Can Rashid overcome?Team newsPakistan wouldn’t want to break up their winning combination, so an unchanged team is expected.Pakistan (probable): 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Haris Sohail, 6 Sarfaraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 7 Imad Wasim, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Wahab Riaz, 11 Shaheen AfridiAfghanistan have tried almost every possible combination, with 16 players used. One change here and there in the batting or bowling hasn’t made a significant difference; they dropped Aftab Alam to recall Dawat Zardan in the last game against Bangladesh, but the bowler conceded 64 in nine overs for one wicket. Samiullah Shinwari in place of Hazratullah Zazai made a difference, as the batsman scored a useful 49 at No. 6 to offer much needed resistance. They are most likely to take on Pakistan unchanged from their previous outing in Southampton.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Gulbadin Naib (capt), 2 Rahmat Shah, 3 Hashmatullah Shahidi, 4 Asghar Afghan, 5 Samiullah Shinwari, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Najibullah Zadran, 8 Ikram Alikhil (wk), 9 Rashid Khan, 10 Dawlat Zadran, 11 Mujeeb Ur RahmanStrategy punts Najibullah Zadran averaged 51.5 runs per dismissal and struck his runs at 101 per 100 balls since 2018. It wasn’t, therefore, a surprise to see him score heavily in the first two innings (51 against Australia and 43 against Sri Lanka) despite batting at No. 7. Him coming up higher in the order could offer stability but he seemingly fell prey to mismanagement, being pushing down in the order to play at Nos. 7 and 8 when the game is all but over. He was also dropped from one game. He is more than a slogger, averaging 57.7 in overs 11-40. His strike rate since 2018 against pace is 98.8 and against spinners, its 101. Time for a promotion? Mohammad Hafeez’s demotion from No. 4 to 6 may create a difference if Haris Sohail is promoted to No. 4 to bat alongside Babar Azam. Besides, Hafeez is effective as an improvisor and, since 2017, averages 64.67 with a strike rate of 137.5 between overs 41-50. Pakistan need an assured presence in the death overs to push their total beyond par to complement their bowlers, so the switch could be a win-win.Pitch and conditionsIt’s expected to be the hottest day of the year, with the temperature exceeding 30 C. The pitch is expected to be slow, but recent games here have had fast bowlers achieve success, which should play into Pakistan’s hands.Stats and trivia Pakistan and Afghanistan have played each other three times, with Afghanistan yet to win Pakistan’s win percentage at Leeds is 44.4%, having won four and lost five matches Mohammad Hafeez needs 63 runs for 500 runs in World Cups Samiullah Shinwari needs five wickets for 50 wickets in ODIs

No more World Cups, 'I don't intend to put my body on the line' – Chris Gayle

He opened the batting, and scored an 18-ball 7. He bowled six overs and picked up a wicket. He strutted around the Headingley turf, mostly with a big smile on his face, and threw in as much drama as possible into pouching a sitter on the field and, if that wasn’t enough, proceeded to do six push-ups. And after West Indies had beaten Afghanistan to finish their World Cup 2019 campaign, Chris Gayle confirmed – again – that as far as World Cups were concerned, he was done.”It’s a brilliant privilege and honour to represent West Indies in five World Cups (2003 to 2019),” he then told Brett Lee and Dean Jones, among others, while speaking to the host broadcaster. “Disappointed to end the World Cup without making it to the final four, but at the same time, I’m grateful to actually be here. A lot has happened behind the scenes, (and) to actually be here is fantastic. To finish off with a win is fantastic for me.”We have a great bunch, some great youngsters as well and it’s up to them to lift West Indies cricket from here on. I will still be around, and give my input to West Indies cricket. I still have a few more games left as well, so we’ll see what happens. The World Cup (form and results wise) wasn’t the one I wanted from a personal point of view, but at the same time, you can’t complain too much. It’s one of those things.”In February this year, Gayle had declared that he would be done with ODIs after the World Cup, but during the tournament he offered the possibility of playing on for a bit longer. When asked if that reconsideration would stretch to playing another World Cup, Gayle played along.

Most memorable WC moment

“In the last World Cup, I hit a double century against Zimbabwe. It was my best World Cup, I would say. To be able to get a double-century in a World Cup, I think that’s a fantastic achievement. I didn’t get a century in this one, but I can’t complain. I enjoyed this World Cup as much as I enjoy each and every World Cup.”

“Should I give it some thought,” he said with a big laugh. “Yes, it is my last World Cup. Unless they can give me two years to rest and I can come back in two years’ time again. It’s definitely my last World Cup. Like I said, life goes on. The game has done a lot for me and I’m privileged to be part of another World Cup.”It is possible [to play the 2023 edition] if I put in the work, but I don’t intend to put my body on the line. As you can see, I’m struggling a bit. Four years is a long way off, and I’m not considering another World Cup, to be honest with you.”Gayle, who picked up one of the match balls – “a prized possession” – did express regret at not winning the trophy, but acknowledged the support of his team-mates, who let him do things his way. “All the guys rallied around me, and the support from the youngsters was fantastic,” Gayle said. “I can’t really fault anyone, but I must commend the staff as well for the work ethic they’ve actually put in for the youngsters and myself.”Life goes on, it’s one of those things. Words can’t explain what I feel right now.”There were moments in the World Cup when some of the West Indian youngsters gave enough indications to suggest cricket in the Caribbean has a bright future. Nicholas Pooran, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer with the bat, and Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas created a splash.”The future definitely looks bright,” Gayle agreed. “Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Pooran as well – those guys will carry the flag and make sure West Indies cricket is back where it belongs. It’s just for them to actually take ownership and take responsibility out there in the middle.”We have a young captain as well, Jason Holder, he’s been around five years now. These guys will need to rally around West Indies cricket as long as possible, and I’m looking forward to (watching them in) the next World Cup as well.”I’ll be telling the youngsters to demolish bowlers.”Gayle, meanwhile, will continue to play franchise cricket, and expects to be in the mix for the tour of India later in the year, and “then hopefully we’ll see what happens later on in the year.”Gayle has finished with 1186 runs from 35 World Cup matches, sixth in the list of most prolific run-getters in the marquee event and second among West Indians behind Brian Lara’s mark of 1225. The 2019 edition had Gayle in patchy form, with 242 runs in eight innings and two half-centuries, scored at a strike rate of 88.32.

Man Utd’s "outrageous" flop who was sold for £21m is outscoring Rashy

Almost ten years ago, a young Dutch forward – and future Manchester United man – announced himself on the world’s biggest stage.

It was in Group B of the 2014 Brazilian World Cup that Memphis Depay starred as a 20-year-old, scoring and assisting against Australia to overturn his nation's one-goal deficit.

From that point, the attacker didn’t look back, and during his final season at PSV Eindhoven, he scored 28 goals and registered eight assists in 40 matches.

Louis Van Gaal

These elite numbers are what made United secure Depay’s signature for £25m in 2015, where he reunited with former Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal. At the time, he was an “outrageous” talent, as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig.

Depay’s record at Man United

Depay’s arrival at Man United made him one of the most talked-about prospects in world football, with all eyes eagerly watching him to see how he would light up the Premier League.

The pressure for him to succeed at such a young age was already on before he kicked a ball, and on his second start at Old Trafford in the Champions League tie against Club Brugge, Depay netted twice and assisted in a 3-1 victory.

On the back of that performance, Netherlands and Bayern Munich legend Arjen Robben said:

“He can become one of the top players in the world at Manchester United. He is already at such a high level, but playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world he will only get even better.”

However, Depay never reached the heights he once promised and struggled to adapt to the Premier League, netting just twice in 29 appearances during his debut campaign, with a young Marcus Rashford ultimately eclipsing him that season as the new poster boy at the Theatre of Dreams.

The former PSV ace ultimately played 53 games for the Red Devils, with a meagre record of seven goals and six assists across all competitions.

Depay’s career after Man United

Olympique Lyon handed Depay a route out of United at the start of 2017, when he made the permanent move to France for £21m.

During this spell, Depay rediscovered his form and cemented himself as one of the most reliable goalscorers and creators in Europe, with an extremely impressive record of 76 goals and 55 assists in 178 matches.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Over the years, the 5 foot 10 attacker developed into a centre forward, moving away from the left-wing role he had become accustomed to as a youngster.

When Depay’s contract expired at Lyon in 2021, the Netherlands whizz decided to take on a new challenge, with a move to Barcelona shortly following that decision. His time with the Catalan giants was hindered by injuries, which saw him miss 30 games.

As you can see by the table above, the 30-year-old still had a respectable output at Barca, but he moved to Atletico Madrid around this time last year, where he is still playing, having enjoyed a fruitful season with Diego Simeone's men.

In fact, the mercurial talent is even outscoring his former teammate, Rashford, having bagged seven goals in all competitions in 2023/24 for the La Liga side, with the Englishman, by contrast, having scored just five goals under Erik ten Hag's watch.

Moving from Manchester to Lyon was the best decision Depay made during his career, which turned out to be successful despite not reaching the potential he showed in his early years.

That said, his goals and assists could have certainly been used at United since his departure, and you have to think of what he could have gone on to become at the Red Devils if he never left in 2017.

Euro 2024 travel guide: Beer, food and drink prices for fans in Germany

Of course, everyone looks forward to watching stars like Jude Bellingham grace the field at Euro 2024, but some fans enjoy the finer things in life, like picking up dirt-cheap beer and soaking in the atmosphere of fanzones.

However, drinking does have its negatives, as the emotion of football and the intoxication can often lead to scraps and needless arguments between fanbases, which has put a downer on events in previous tournaments gone by.

Regardless of this, heading down the pub before the game is a necessity in most football fans' pre-match ritual, so Football FanCast has tried to gather all the best information on potential prices and the best locations for fans heading to Germany this summer…

Newcastle line up £34m bid for "world-class" Burn replacement

There's no denying that Newcastle United have enjoyed real success in the January window during the PIF regime so far, with previous years having proven rather fruitful for the club with regard to securing high-profile incomings.

Back in 2022, the Magpies were able to move comfortably clear of the relegation zone having been buoyed by the signings of Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes, among others, while last year saw the £45m capture of Anthony Gordon – the Englishman now thriving with 14 goals and assists from 20 Premier League games this season.

Although hampered by FFP restraints, the St James' Park outfit could look to secure a timely boost with another high-profile addition in the winter window, amid reports that the club are lining up a bid for a potential marquee signing.

Newcastle eyeing move for 2023 Champions League finalist

According to Italian outlet, InterLive, the northeast side are said to be willing to offer around €40m (£34m) – plus bonuses – in order to secure the signing of Inter Milan defender, Federico Dimarco, with the 26-year-old having been part of the side that reached the Champions League final last season.

The piece suggests that the Italy international – who is also of interest to Manchester United – has emerged as a top target for PIF this year, despite the fact that the full-back has only recently signed a new contract extension until 2027.

That bumper new deal has ensured that Newcastle will have to fork out closer to €60m (£52m) if they are to get their man either this month or during the summer, although such an investment could well prove worth it to replace the aforementioned Burn at left-back.

How Federico Dimarco compares to Dan Burn

Signed for just £13m two years ago, local hero Burn has established himself as a key figure under Eddie Howe amid the club's recent resurgence, having been hailed for his "ridiculous impact" during his first season at the club – as per pundit Frank McAvennie.

Despite cementing himself as a fans' favourite at St James' Park, the Blyth-born giant has come under fire for his performances at left-back more recently, enduring particularly tough outings at home to Nottingham Forest as well as in the 4-2 defeat away at Anfield.

While Howe does have teenage gem, Lewis Hall as an option in that left-sided role, the addition of a figure like Dimarco could provide the Magpies with a more proven talent, with the former Hellas Verona loanee currently shining at San Siro.

Although he does often operate in a more attacking wing-back berth, the Inter man's quality has shone through after providing three goals and seven assists in all competitions this season, having been described as "a goal threat" by journalist Carlo Garganese.

As Garganese also noted, "his delivery, crosses, set pieces and corners are world class", with such praise reinforced by the fact that both Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville only recently named him in their Team of the Year for 2023.

The Milan native had contributed to 16 goals and assists across all fronts in 2022/23 for Simone Inzaghi's side, with Burn, by contrast contributing to just two goals and no assists in 44 games last term, as well as registering only five goal involvements this time around.

Dimarco's creative quality is also shown by the fact that he ranks in the top 1% among his European peers for both shot-creating actions and assists made per 90, across the last 365 days, while the current Newcastle man ranks in just the bottom 6% and the bottom 15% for those same two metrics, respectively.

Howe could then have an attacking weapon down the left flank to mirror Kieran Trippier on the opposite flank, rather than utilising the more defensive-minded Burn, with such an addition able to help take the club to that next level under PIF's watch.
