Gittens upgrade: Chelsea could see £56m bid accepted for "electric" ace

Chelsea are just one win away from claiming the Club World Cup and the $125m prize money that goes with it.

This would give Enzo Maresca a significant boost heading into the next few weeks, especially as it looks like he still has unfinished business in the transfer market.

So far this summer, Chelsea have signed Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Mamadou Sarr. Brazilian prodigy Estevao is set to join the Blues before the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

His squad is very top-heavy, but the Italian will be looking to move certain players on to balance the books.

Noni Madueke looks set to join Arsenal in a deal worth £52m. Elsewhere, the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix could be set for moves away from Stamford Bridge.

These sales will ensure Maresca doesn’t breach any profit or sustainability regulations while allowing the club to have a significantly stronger squad at the end of the window compared to how they started it.

Delap and Pedro have already proven their worth at the Club World Cup, but it could be Gittens who turns out to be one of the club’s most exciting signings this summer.

Why Jamie Gittens could be Chelsea’s best signing

Throughout his spell at Borussia Dortmund, Gittens demonstrated why he was one of the finest young talents on the continent.

Last season, he registered 17 goal involvements – 12 goals and five assists – across 42 games for the German side, despite falling out of favour slightly during the second half of the season under new coach Niko Kovač.

Despite struggling during the second half of the campaign, Gittens still ranked highly across several metrics when compared to his peers.

Indeed, not only did the youngster rank in the top 1% for successful take-ons (3.57) per 90 across Europe’s top five leagues, but he also ranked in the top 9% for progressive carries (5.53) and in the top 15% for non-penalty goals (0.41) per 90.

On this basis, Gittens is certainly one of the most promising wingers on the continent and should he hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge, Maresca will have pulled off an excellent coup.

The 20-year-old is capable of playing across either flank, while he has even played in a more central role. Maresca will likely use him on the left, as that is the position where he is at his best.

Given his skills and statistics over the previous 12 months, landing a talent like Gittens could make Chelsea challengers for both the Premier League and Champions League next season.

As mentioned earlier, however, the Italian isn’t going to stop there in terms of improving his squad. Could he be targeting another swoop on the Bundesliga giants in the coming days?

Chelsea learn fee for Borussia Dortmund talent

Recently, the Blues have been linked with moves for Emiliano Martinez, Giorgio Scalvini and Antonio Silva in a bid to bolster their defensive options.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

With plenty of attacking options joining the club, Maresca still needs to add another defender or two to his squad ahead of next season.

Despite this, there are still links appearing for attacking players, and the latest one sees the club being touted with a move for Dortmund star Karim Adeyemi, according to reports from German outlet Bild (via Sport Witness).

Borussia Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi celebrates scoring their second goal withDonyellMalen, Julian Brandt and Pascal Gross

Indeed, they are battling it out with Newcastle United for his signature, while Juventus were preparing a bid of €40-45m (£35m – £39m) for the player, but this figure won’t be high enough to convince Dortmund to sell the forward.

As per the report, the German side have placed a price tag of between €65-70m (£56m – £60m) for their prized asset, with Dortmund’s management only willing to engage in negotiations if an offer of at least £56m is submitted.

With the likelihood that the Blues could see a bid accepted if an offer is made in that region, Maresca could be getting a major Gittens upgrade.

Why Chelsea must sign Karim Adeyemi

While Gittens registered 17 goal contributions last season, Adeyemi went and scored 12 goals while also registering 11 assists in all competitions for the club.

His positional flexibility will also be a huge plus point for Maresca. Not only did Adeyemi play on either flank last term, but the German also featured through the middle as a centre-forward, giving the Blues several options on how to utilise his talents.

In the Bundesliga last season, he also created nine big chances, averaged 1.1 key passes and registered 1.8 shots per game.

Comparatively, Gittens managed six big chances created, averaged just 0.7 key passes and 1.6 shots per game in the top flight.

Delving even deeper, Adeyemi also registered more goal-creating actions (0.69 vs 0.51) per 90 than Gittens, while also registering more shot-creating actions (3.61 vs 3.57) per 90 and more shots on target (1.23 vs 1.06) per 90 across the Bundesliga and Champions League last season.

Karim Adeyemi in action for Germany against Portugal.

Back in 2020, football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed Adeyemi as a “world-class” talent, while also stating that the youngster had “electric pace” and was “intelligent & unselfish” when profiling the player.

Since then, the Dortmund star has exuded all of these qualities and more as he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best players in the German top flight.

Maresca wouldn’t just be improving his attacking department by signing Adeyemi; he would also be landing an immediate upgrade on Gittens.

Although the Englishman comes with plenty of hype, it remains to be seen whether he has the maturity to succeed in the Premier League.

Adeyemi has plenty more experience; thus, he could turn out to be a better signing, especially if he starts well. For £56m, Maresca could be sealing yet another impressive signing that will bolster his frontline this summer.

If he manages to sell the likes of Madueke, Nkunku and Felix over the coming weeks, there is no doubt Adeyemi will fit right in.

England up against a changed India from Adelaide 2022

Manjrekar: Defeat to England in 2022 semi-final was a ‘wake-up call’ for India

Match detailsEngland vs India, 2nd semi-final
Guyana, June 27, 10.30am local timeBig picture – Adelaide reduxAll the best origin stories start from a point of intense trauma. England’s rise from their humiliation in Adelaide at the 2015 ODI World Cup has been well documented – the shedding of reticence and the embracing of risk, the faith in a new generation under the guidance of a handful of wise old heads, and the reaping of rewards that could scarcely have been countenanced while the old mentality held sway – including (albeit briefly) concurrent World Cups of the 50 and 20-over variety.Who rightly knows where England’s narrative arc has now reached, particularly after that feeble 50-over defence in India last year, but also during a skittish journey through the Caribbean that has been carried, almost exclusively, by their brutal treatment of Associate opponents.Related

'Most important player' Adil Rashid looms as key threat against India

What we do know, however, is that – as they passed through Adelaide in November 2022 en route to that second world title – England’s arc intersected with India’s own nadir. As in 2015, the sense after that ten-wicket drubbing in the T20 World Cup semi-final was of a team so wrapped up in its home-soil dominance that it had lost sight of the need to mitigate for foreign conditions. Something had to change urgently, and to judge by India’s inexorable (but as yet unrewarded) response, it surely has. Here, though, is an appetising acid test of India’s new methods. At some stage, it seems inevitable that their decade-long drought at ICC events will have to come to an end, but then again, they probably assumed it was already over after coasting through to last year’s 50-over final in Ahmedabad. Much as Ben Stokes’ experience in Kolkata in 2016 was a vital factor in England’s subsequent glory, the trauma of that loss to Australia will surely have hardened India’s resolve as they encounter the sharp end of another global tournament. No one should expect an easy ride in a knock-out scenario, especially when the desire for victory has been allowed to consume the process of achieving it.Jos Buttler was the star of the show in England’s win over India in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final•Associated PressEngland, on the other hand, have been consumed of late by an entirely different emotion. The fear of failure hadn’t been a particularly familiar bedfellow throughout their years of white-ball bottom-feeding, but with so much silverware there to lose, they seemed paralysed by anxiety throughout the 50-over World Cup, and again in their formless group-stage loss to the now-absent Australians in Barbados. Now, however, you wonder if the fulfilment of the bare minimum of the squad’s expectations – a fourth consecutive T20 World Cup semi-final – can unleash something different in the psyche of a group of players who clearly know what it takes to get across the line. India haven’t won a World Cup since 2011; South Africa and Afghanistan on the other side of the draw have never won one at all. England could yet be in the running for a third title in five years. As Australia have spent their entire existence demonstrating, that familiarity with the unique pressures of knockout contests clearly counts for something. But so too does a burning desire to prove a point that has been years in the making. Assuming the rain stays away, one or other position will have to give way. It promises to be compelling whatever comes to pass.2:12

Fleming on key phases that will decide the semi-final

Form guide India WWWWW (last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
England WLWWWIn the spotlight – Rohit, Buttler, Rashid, KuldeepIn a match of such high stakes, it’s impossible to look past the influence of the two captains – opening bats and icons in their own right, and two men who have hit a vein of form that has the power to dictate their team’s prospects.Rohit Sharma did just that in his smackdown of Australia in St Lucia, throwing caution to the wind – quite literally – in his calculated assault on Mitchell Starc, and accelerating ever deeper into his day’s work, in the unfettered manner that has been his calling card ever since that notoriously reticent display in Adelaide in 2022. Rohit’s conscious breaking of India’s milestone-orientated mould could yet prove to be his most important legacy as captain, especially if he can land the trophy that has eluded his country since the man himself was a rookie in 2007.Jos Buttler, by contrast, hasn’t yet shied away from his right to find his feet in any given innings – and his dovetailing with Phil Salt helps hugely in that regard – but his brutal 83 from 38 balls against USA was the sort of range-hitting display that his England teams have habitually drilled themselves to produce in the nets. Perhaps more than any other contemporary great, Buttler is a mood player – prone to deep introspection when his game goes awry, as was the case in a woeful 50-over World Cup campaign, but capable of astonishing peaks when his mind is in the right place. He’s two games away from back-to-back T20 titles, and right now, it feels as though that prospect is empowering him.Kuldeep Yadav has been at the top of his game this World Cup•CREIMASStanding in the way of both men and their teams, however, will be two wristspinners in complete command of their respective games. Adil Rashid was England’s key bowler in the 2022 T20 World Cup knockouts, returning a combined analysis of 3 for 42 in eight overs against India and Pakistan, and having started a touch tentatively in the group stage, he’s grown into the tournament with an impeccable command of flight, pace and variation – with his googly rarely failing to hit its mark.Set against him, however, is the equally wily Kuldeep Yadav, whose scarcity value as a left-arm wristspinner gives him added power to contort the unwary – as England’s Test team discovered to their cost in India earlier this year. Buttler’s own record against Kuldeep – 87 runs off 63 deliveries for three dismissals in all T20s, is a sign of the threat he could pose.1:33

Will India continue with three left-arm spinners against England?

Team newsIndia have known all tournament long that a Guyana semi-final beckoned if they could do the needful in the Super Eight, and having successfully switched to a spin-heavy line-up since coming through their US-based group stage, they look primed to exploit the Providence conditions. Hardik Pandya’s form as the third seamer provides options where required, and an unchanged XI is surely on the cards.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Rishabh Pant (wk), 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Shivam Dube, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Arshdeep Singh, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Jasprit Bumrah.England, by contrast, may be tempted to tinker with the balance that served them well through the Super Eight, in the expectation that four seamers is at least one more than the conditions will merit. Tom Hartley offers a spare left-arm spin option, but England’s inability to hand him a debut in their rain-affected home series against Pakistan means he’s unlikely to be risked now. More likely is a reinforcement of their batting, amid faith that six front-line bowlers will suffice. Will Jacks does offer an additional spin option, but Ben Duckett’s proven prowess in turning conditions could be an attractive addition.England (probable): 1 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 2 Phil Salt, 3 Will Jacks/Ben Duckett, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Liam Livingstone, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Chris Jordan/Reece Topley. Will rain be a factor in the Providence Stadium in Guyana?•ICC/Getty ImagesPitch and conditions: Will the rain-rules rule?Guyana has been a tricky venue for run-scoring throughout the T20 World Cup, with a run rate of 6.20 and an average of 14.67. Though these stats are partially skewed by two heavy defeats for Uganda, they also include serial semi-finalists New Zealand being bowled out for 75 by Afghanistan.Spin has been a significant weapon at Providence in this tournament, with 27 wickets falling in five previous matches, at a strike-rate of 17.1, which is bettered among the regular venues only by Arnos Vale in St Vincent.Unlike the first semi-final in Trinidad, there is no reserve day scheduled for this match, with the ICC citing insufficient travel time ahead of Saturday morning’s final in Barbados. However, because the match is slated for a 10.30am start, there are 250 minutes of extra time to play with, meaning a game of some description should be possible barring heavy rain all day. A minimum of 10 overs per side will be required to constitute a match. If, however, the match is washed out, India will progress to the final after topping their group in the Super Eight.Stats and trivia England lost their only previous completed T20I at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, against West Indies in the opening match of their T20 World Cup campaign in 2010. Though they recovered to claim the title (after a rain-affected escape against Ireland at the same venue), there’ll be no second chances this time out. Despite that infamous semi-final two years ago, India still boast a positive overall head-to-head against England in T20Is, with 12 wins and 11 losses in their previous 23 encounters. With his match-winning 92 against Australia, Rohit Sharma (4165) vaulted past Virat Kohli (4103) to the top of the run-scoring leaderboard in T20Is.Quotes”Both teams are going to go out there and throw punches at each other for 40-odd overs. It’s going to be a great contest. I think it’s the contest that everyone’s wanted to see, and we’re excited by it.”
“Wherever we play, whether it’s bilateral series or ICC tournaments, the Indian cricket team is always under pressure. That’s the fact. Most of the guys are used to it, so it’s important to have a little bit of calmness in the dressing room.”

Chelsea could land a big Jackson upgrade by signing "clinical" £59m striker

Chelsea’s Champions League ambitions are still in their own hands.

On Friday night, in a game that lacked quality for long periods, the Blues battled to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, with Marc Cucurella the night’s only scorer, heading home a Reece James cross at the back post.

This goal prevented Enzo Maresca’s team from slipping out of the top five, and victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on the final day will secure Champions League qualification, although anything less would almost certainly see them miss out.

With the Conference League final in Wrocław to come, followed by the Club World Cup stateside, it’s set to be a busy summer on the pitch for the Blues, while, off it, you can better your bottom dollar that they’ll be active in the transfer market, with a new striker top of their list of priorities.

The latest on Nicolas Jackson's future

One man not involved in the victory over Man United was Nicolas Jackson, commencing his three-match suspension, having been sent off, following video review, for colliding with Sven Botman’s face last Sunday.

The Senegalese striker will also be banned for next weekend’s trip to Nottingham, as well as the opening day of next season in August, but where will he find himself in the pecking order by then?

Well, Maresca certainly views Jackson as an important figure, praising his out-of-possession work rate, and he has certainly been a key figure this season, scoring 12 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions, with nine of his ten in the Premier League coming before Christmas, which Ed Dove of ESPN described as the ‘finest goal-scoring run of his Chelsea career’.

The table underlines that Jackson is certainly not a clinical finisher, with only 13 players, out of 569, registering a lower goals – xG figure in the Premier League this season, while only three players have missed more Opta-defined big chances.

In summary, Jackson takes a lot of shots but not a lot of them are goals, so, if Chelsea are going to be competing to win the biggest trophies again, they probably need a better centre-forward, so could one be available?

Chelsea could land Nicolas Jackson upgrade

According to a recent report by Jörg Weiler and Yannick Hüber of Bild, Chelsea have been given the opportunity to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, claiming that he has a €70m (around £59m) release clause in his contract.

They added that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are also interested, even if die Schwarzgelben’s sporting director Lars Ricken is insistent the striker will not move this summer.

So why are so many of Europe’s top clubs interested in Guirassy’s services?

Well, after scoring 30 goals for Stuttgart last season, he joined Dortmund for a reported fee of £14.7m in the summer, netting 33 times across all competitions during this campaign, including 13 in the Champions League, making him the joint-top scorer in the tournament, alongside Raphinha.

His Bundesliga statistics across the last two seasons are pretty impressive too.

As the table shows, only Harry Kane has scored more Bundesliga goals than Guirassy this season and last, the Guinean doing so in a largely dysfunctional Dortmund team this season, making his exploits all the more impressive.

As a result, Andrews Sefa of 3Sports labels him “clinical”, while Abdullah Mamaniyat of Breaking the Lines praises his ‘great movement’ and his ‘ability to create goals out of nothing’.

So, the big question remains: how does he compare to Jackson?

Well, let’s find out.

As the table outlines, Guirassy comes out on top for almost every single metric included, with his goals – xG figure of +6 in stark contrast to the -6 posted by Jackson, which speaks to the gulf in quality between the two centre-forwards.

Ryan Benson of Opta’s the Analyst labels Guirassy ‘the complete striker’, an assertion all available statistics support, so it is clear that he would be a massive upgrade on Jackson, and his potential arrival, for just £59m, could take Chelsea to the next level with his clinical finishing in front of goal.

"Unbelievable" £25m ace ready to leave his club with Nottingham Forest keen

An “unbelievable” Premier League player is now ready to leave his club this summer, amid interest from Nottingham Forest, according to a report.

Forest set to bolster attacking options

Forest will be in a good position to attract some top players this summer, should they manage to qualify for the Champions League, and Nuno appears to be particularly keen on strengthening his squad in attacking areas.

With signing a new striker on the agenda, the Tricky Trees have recently emerged as potential suitors for AFC Bournemouth’s Evanilson, having shortlisted the Brazilian, alongside Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who could be available for £50m.

Not only does Nuno want to bring in a new striker, but the manager is also interested in signing a new winger, with Manchester City’s Jack Grealish of interest, while teammate James McAtee has been named as a target in attacking midfield.

Napoli and Roma chase £80k-p/w Nottingham Forest ace amid new contract talks

Forest have a battle on their hands to keep hold of one of their best attackers.

ByBrett Worthington Apr 28, 2025

There is a feeling the midfielder could be available for £25m this summer, with Forest keen, and there has now been a new update on the City ace’s future, which suggests he may not remain at the Etihad Stadium for much longer.

According to a report from Football Insider, McAtee is now ready to approve a move away from Man City this summer, amid interest from Nottingham Forest, given that he has struggled to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans.

The 22-year-old has only featured sporadically this season, meaning he is eager to reignite his career, and a move to the City Ground could be on the cards, although there is also interest from the likes of West Ham United and Fulham.

By June, the Salford-born midfielder will have just one year remaining on his contract, with City keen to agree a contract extension to ensure they receive a fee that reflects his value.

"Unbelievable" McAtee needs regular game time

The former Sheffield United loanee caught the eye in the early stages of his career, picking up nine goals and three assists for the Blades during their promotion-winning 2022-23 campaign, but he has struggled to make a breakthrough at Man City.

At 22-years-old, the attacking midfielder needs to be receiving regular game time, so it is little wonder he is thinking about moving on for the good of his career, and there are plenty of indications he could make an impact at Forest.

Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap was left particularly impressed with the England U21 international after bagging a brace in his side’s 2-1 victory against Ukraine U21s earlier this season.

Delap believes McAtee can achieve great things in the game, but that will only be possible if he receives regular game time, and a move to Forest could be an attractive proposition, should they manage to qualify for the Champions League.

Man Utd's £50k-p/w star is in danger of becoming the new Anthony Elanga

Manchester United’s recent woes have only been further highlighted by the success of those who have left the club in recent times, with a handful of high profile stars having been unburdened by the decision to depart Old Trafford.

Indeed, recent months have seen both Antony and Marcus Rashford find their groove out on loan at Real Betis and Aston Villa, respectively, with the Brazilian already chalking up eight goals and assists in just 12 games for the LaLiga side, while the latter man has registered two goals and four assists in ten games at Villa Park.

Even Anthony Martial, meanwhile, who scored just twice in all competitions last season, has hit form since moving to Greece on a free transfer, with the mercurial Frenchman netting nine times in just 20 outings for AEK Athens to date.

Elanga

It would appear that breaking free of United shackles can do the world of good for a player, with that having notably been evident on Tuesday night, as Anthony Elanga proved the matchwinner at the City Ground.

The Swedish speedster – who was allowed to leave Old Trafford on a £15m deal back in the summer of 2023 – ran almost the length of the pitch before slotting past Andre Onana in the opening exchanges, with that marking the 22-year-old’s 29th goal involvement in 73 games since moving to Nottingham Forest.

Such an impact may spark a tinge of regret among those of a United persuasion, with there also perhaps fears that a similar scenario could be set to occur with regard to another of Ruben Amorim’s current crop.

Anthony Elanga's game in numbers vs Man Utd

As is often the way for United – having notably seen academy graduate Danny Welbeck score on six occasions against them over the last decade or so – they were undone by ‘one of their own’ on Tuesday evening, despite putting in a largely encouraging performance up against their high-flying hosts.

Anthony Elanga

The Red Devils had 23 shots in total yet once again failed to showcase that much-needed cutting edge in front of goal, while Elanga, meanwhile, needed just one early chance to break the deadlock.

The speed at which the Malmo native drove from just outside his own penalty area was simply frightening, with both Patrick Dorgu and the sliding Alejandro Garnacho having failed to even get close to him in truth.

That moment of magic also marked one of six successful dribbles that Elanga completed on the night – more than any other player – having also been a real asset for his side defensively, after winning nine total duels.

There could well have been a second for the 21-cap Sweden international had it not been for a stunning intervention from Leny Yoro late in the second half, with the teenage Frenchman just about managing to keep pace with the electric winger.

In all, such a statement showing from the Forest starlet served to highlight United’s own attacking flaws, having also shown the benefits to others of flying the nest, particularly considering he only registered four goals and four assists during his first-team stint back in Manchester.

Man Utd star is in danger of becoming the new Elanga

The debate will continue over whether Elanga simply needed a fresh start to be able to truly flourish, or whether he was actually not afforded a fair chance at the Theatre of Dreams, having made just 26 appearances under Erik ten Hag during the 2022/23 campaign.

Whatever the case, the £15m man now has 14 goals and assists to his name in the top-flight this season – only Bruno Fernandes (18) betters that tally among Amorim’s ranks.

There may be a concern that a repeat scenario could occur with the aforementioned Garnacho, with talk having been rife in recent months regarding a potential sale for the Argentine youngster.

Elanga vs Garnacho

Reportedly valued at around £60m, amid January interest from Chelsea, the 20-year-old could prove a casualty of United’s desire to meet PSR regulations, with the sale of the academy graduate set to prove pure profit – much like Elanga.

Much like his former teammate too, there may be a question mark over his role under the new management regime, with Garnacho registering just six goals and assists in 24 games for Amorim, after previously racking up 32 goal involvements in 98 games under Ten Hag.

In the case of Elanga, the promising winger burst onto the scene in 2021/22 following Ralf Rangnick’s appointment, with three of his four goals for the club coming during the German’s interim spell. Under Ten Hag in the following campaign, he wasn’t even involved in the matchday squad for the final 13 league games of the season.

Garnacho – who scored in the FA Cup final back in May – was Ten Hag’s man, but can he be Amorim’s?

If not, the Spain-born forward may find himself following in Elanga’s footsteps by finding his feet elsewhere, with that likely to be a scenario that both United and INEOS would live to regret.

Yes, as his profligacy on Tuesday showcased, the £50k-per-week ace has the ability to frustrate, yet ever since his promotion into the first-team ranks, Garnacho has been a player to get the crowd off their seat. As journalist Samuel Luckhurst previously noted, he is a “game-changer”.

Alejandro Garnacho

Part of an otherwise lifeless forward line, Garnacho is currently the one capable of igniting it, with it set to be no surprise if he does flourish elsewhere should a move be made, much like Elanga has.

Here’s how the second week of MLC action panned out.All or nothing for Devon ConwayFifty-five, 0, 74, 0 – two first-ball ducks and two quick half-centuries. It’s been a strange MLC for Devon Conway. He lit up the opening game of the tournament against Knight Riders, notching up the first half-century in the MLC. In the next game, against Freedom, he was cleaned up by Marco Jansen for a duck. He followed it up with a match-winning 55-ball 74 against New York before falling for another first-ball duck against Orcas. Conway’s ducks have coincided with Super Kings’ losses. He will want to score big in the final league game – against Unicorns, crucial to Super Kings’ playoffs chances – and consistently, moving forward.Related

Netravalkar flies the USA flag in North Carolina

Cricket through the eyes of two baseball fans

Netravalkar’s demolition job, Phillips the ball magnetSaurabh Netravalkar is one of the best known American cricketers. He made his ODI and T20I debut in 2019 and has also captained the team in both formats. While most USA players haven’t managed to break into the playing XIs in the first year of the MLC, Netravalkar made a mark when he ripped through the Unicorns line-up, finishing with unbelievable figures of 6 for 9 in 3.5 overs – the best in the competition so far. With Freedom defending only 133, he got the ball to deck in sharply to the right-handers from the around-the-wicket angle and broke the back of the Unicorns chase, cleaning them up for 103.The bowling performance was supported brilliantly by Glenn Phillips on the field. He took four catches, including two where he had to cover a fair distance. He was sprinting back from short cover to deep cover, both sides of the wicket, staying patient at cow corner on either side and grabbing everything that came his way. It seemed like the ball was following Phillips, and he was happy with the situation.Russell heroics not enough to change Knight Riders’ luckIt’s fair to say Knight Riders’ campaign never took flight. There were specks of brilliance, but the team failed to show up as a unit. However, Andre Russell, the highest run-getter in the tournament so far with 206 runs in five matches, has been a shining light all through. After Dallas, it was Morrisville’s turn to witness his heroics. He took the Freedom bowlers to the cleaners, smashing an unbeaten 37-ball 70, with six fours and six sixes. His innings, however, wasn’t enough as Andries Gous’ 15-ball 40, backed up by effective cameos, helped Freedom chase down 176 with ease. After four successive losses, Knight Riders finally got a win, in their last league game. Rilee Rossouw came to the party with an unbeaten 38-ball 78, helping his side beat Orcas, the table-toppers.Who will make the playoffs?Orcas, with three wins from four games, and Freedom, who have won three out of five, have qualified for the playoffs already. New York are placed third on the points table with four points, and play their last group game against Orcas on Wednesday. A win will take New York above the second-placed Freedom, owing to a superior net run-rate. Even if they lose, New York have a shot at making the final four, as their current net run-rate of +1.319 is the best of the lot. Both Super Kings and Unicorns are on four points and occupy the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. The winner of this fixture will confirm a playoff spot.Mohammad Mohsin is Texas Super Kings’ highest wicket-taker so far in MLC•SportzpicsDomestic watch: Mohammad MohsinMohammad Mohsin, the Peshawar-born legspinner who has now moved to the USA, is a player to watch out for. Playing for Super Kings, he has picked a wicket in every game, flummoxing batters with his guile and deception. He kicked off his MLC campaign with 4 for 8 against Knight Riders, and has been consistent throughout. In four games so far, he has bagged eight wickets at 14.62 and an economy of 8.35.”He has got a kit of tricks you want against those big hitters, especially in the first six balls when they are exposing their front pad. I have confidence in him now,” Faf du Plessis, the Super Kings captain, said about Mohsin. The top performersMost runs: Andre Russell | 206 runs at a strike rate of 156.06.Most wickets: Cameron Gannon | Nine wickets at an average of 11.11

Varun Chakravarthy gets ready for his first, best, and only chance

His skills aren’t in question, but his fitness is, and the mystery spinner must prove he is finally good to go

Deivarayan Muthu24-Jul-2021Varun Chakravarthy – here we go again! After missing out on selection for the T20I leg of the Australia tour and the home series against England because of fitness issues, the mystery spinner is braced for his international debut, one more time. With the T20I series in Sri Lanka being India’s last before the T20 World Cup, this will be Chakravarthy’s first – and probably last – chance to stake a claim for the tournament, to be held in the UAE and Oman from October 17 to November 14.The last time Chakravarthy was in the UAE, he married his variations with control to emerge as the Kolkata Knight Riders’ highest wicket-taker, with 17 strikes in 13 matches at an economy rate of 6.84. The national selectors were so impressed that they immediately rewarded him with a place in the T20I side.Chakravarthy has had a roller-coaster ride since.Related

He watched his Tamil Nadu mate T Natarajan take his place in the T20I side and make a big splash in Australia. He met his idol, actor Vijay, and got married to his girlfriend Neha during his time away from the game. He then underwent rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, but wasn’t deemed fit enough for selection for the T20Is against England. It was then time to prove he was no one-season IPL wonder, fronting up to bowl in the powerplay, middle overs, as well as at the death earlier this year – with or without Sunil Narine. IPL 2021 was later postponed after he was among the people to test positive for Covid-19.While Chakravarthy has recovered and continues to upgrade his skills – he is working on adding to his seven variations, according to the Knight Riders’ spin-bowling coach Carl Crowe, who is now with the Manchester Originals for the Hundred – there might still be question marks over his fitness.Reacting to Chakravarthy failing a fitness test ahead of the England T20Is, Virat Kohli had stressed that fitness could not be “compromised” in this Indian set-up. There is a school of thought – that Crowe subscribes to – that players like Chakravarthy, who come from a non-professional background, could be given some leeway.

“If you have a cricketer who comes from a low-base background and when he does not have support for fitness growing up in his formative years, I think you give a little bit of leeway as long as you see the fitness level improve as he goes along”Carl Crowe

“In the modern era of sport, particularly cricket, it is very fitness-driven. You could argue that it’s over the line on fitness and I might be in that camp,” Crowe tells ESPNcricinfo. “Cricket is a skill sport, but fitness is crucial for maximising performance, longevity and resisting injuries and so many reasons. When you have someone with the high skill level that Varun brings – different shades that he has – it’s not made up by extra fitness. If you look at how he’s bowled in the last two IPLs…. I think it was a game in Sharjah where he played the previous IPL on a small ground and flat wicket, he went for 24-25 runs in his four overs. Even this time, he got Virat out very quickly against RCB.”My view is – I’m not in charge of BCCI to tell them to do things at all – if you have a cricketer who comes from a low-base background and when he does not have support for fitness growing up in his formative years, I think you give a little bit of leeway as long as you see the fitness level improve as he goes along.”I don’t think Varun gave much away in the field ever. You don’t want too many fielders in the hot spots who can’t field out there, he wasn’t there; he often fields at 45 to maybe spinners and fine leg to seamers. There was no error that you could put down to fitness. You’re bowling four overs, fielding 16 overs and he can hold a bat down the order, so there’s nothing to me that suggests that he’s probably below the level of acceptability for fitness. At the same time, if the team is trying to drive a culture of fitness, it’s difficult to bring in a player who doesn’t meet the standards. But for me as long as the player works incredibly hard at fitness and keeps improving and has that skill level, I’d like to see a bit more leniency.”Among Chakravarthy’s unique skills is the carrom ball, which he flicks out with his ring finger as opposed to others who bowl the variation with the middle finger. He also has the ability to gather pace off pitches that aren’t as quick, something that puts him in the company of the best T20 spinners, according to Crowe. He has a knack of picking up the big wickets•BCCI”I can’t certainly say what is more difficult to pick than a standard carrom ball delivered from the middle finger, but what, I think, it does do is it makes the batters around the world looking and guessing what’s coming next,” Crowe says. “I think I know he’s working on at least one more delivery. Once the batter gets better at facing the carrom ball from the middle finger, they now have to be prepared and adapt to face the carrom ball off the ring finger. What matters ultimately is the ball spinning to the left, right, or over the top or underspin and there are obviously different degrees of that. How you go about doing that is up to you as an individual.”Gathering pace off the pitch for me is what separates the very best spinners from the rest. There’s less time for [batters] to adapt and then it spins past the bat quicker. It might look nice on TV – that ball breaking off the pitch – but if it doesn’t gather pace, good players will be able to adapt and play with the spin. If you look at the pace that the best T20 spinners bowl at – Rashid [Khan], Narine and like Varun – they are pushing close to 100ks and turning the ball both ways.”Crowe, who has overseen the progress of spinners in various leagues around the world, also believes that the presence of a mystery spinner in a global tournament, like the World Cup, could potentially give India a distinct advantage over the other teams.”In my experience at the IPL, the Indian players – they play mystery spin and any kind of spin the best and the overseas players not quite so much. Some of them like Jos Buttler play them well individually, but not across the board; the overseas players aren’t quite as skilled against mystery spin,” he says. “You think about a World Cup, where non-Indian players play against a mystery spinner… there might be a few sleepless nights for the batters, trying to see which way the ball is spinning . I’m really excited to see him play and it [playing for India] means a lot to him.”I get so many youngsters who contact me via my social media saying: ‘Sir, I want to be given a go or have an opportunity by only playing here’ and I always come back to Varun. I say this is the man you got to follow and dreams can come true. You play gully cricket, do some net bowling somewhere and be seen – it’s a story for all of us to learn and be inspired by.”India’s spin attack is already well-stocked with Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Krunal Pandya, but they don’t quite have X-factor, which Chakravarthy could bring to the table. If he can pass the test in Sri Lanka, and add another chapter to his fascinating story, who knows what might happen.

Every F1 drivers' favourite football team

Even in a field as competitive as Formula 1, drivers still have time to support their favourite football teams. Some drivers are more passionate than others when it comes to supporting their clubs, with others only recently being introduced to the beautiful game.

Here, we’ve listed every favourite football team, from Arsenal to Bristol City, for each driver on the 2025 roster with such affiliations, though it’s clear that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so only a selection feature.

George Russell

Carlos Sainz

Real Madrid

Max Verstappen

PSV Eindhoven

Fernando Alonso

Real Madrid

Despite being born in Oviedo, situated in north-western Spain, Fernando Alonso is a strong supporter of Real Madrid, where he is an honorary member.

While he remains a fan of local club Real Oviedo, who play in the second tier in Spain, Alonso has stated in the past that he does not know why he is a Madridista.

He does have a membership at his local club, though it is clear his main loyalties are with the 15-time European champions.

Kimi Antonelli

Bologna

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli follows his hometown club Bologna.

He even found time to celebrate in the streets with supporters after Bologna beat AC Milan to win the Italian Cup in 2025 – their first since 1974.

Franco Colapinto

Boca Juniors

Brazilian driver Franco Colapinto is a loyal supporter of local club Boca Juniors and is sometimes spotted wearing the club’s attire in the paddock.

He isn’t afraid to hide his passion for the blue and gold and follows them around the world.

Pierre Gasly

Paris Saint-Germain

Considered one of the more passionate football fans on the F1 circuit, Pierre Gasly is another who has opted for his nation’s capital club over his local team.

In fairness to Gasly, his birthplace of Rouen is just a couple hours’ drive from Paris, where plenty more riches are on offer, of course.

Without just one Grand Prix win coming on 2020, maybe we can understand Gasly’s thirst for success as a Paris Saint-Germain supporter.

Isack Hadjar

Paris Saint-Germain

Isack Hadjar is another big PSG fan and was left gutted that he couldn’t attend the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal in 2205.

He was delighted with the outcome, though, and isn’t afraid to hide his love for the French giants.

Lewis Hamilton

Arsenal

A Gunners fan from a young age, Lewis Hamilton has been to plenty of Arsenal matches over the years. While he has stated that he is a long-time Gooner, Hamilton made headlines when being in the running to buy Chelsea, with some of his family being fans of the Blues.

Nico Hulkenberg

Bayern Munich

Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg is thought to be a strong supporter of Bayern Munich.

It appears that little else is known about the German’s love of football, but given that he hails from western Germany, we can’t help but feel past successes have once again been the inspiration to follow the (former) Bundesliga juggernauts.

Charles Leclerc

AS Monaco

Ferrari star Charles Leclerc is one of Monaco’s very own, and supports the principality’s principal club when it comes to football.

A frequent visitor at the Stade Louis II, Leclerc has an existing relationship with the Ligue 1 side, who are keen to congratulate the local lad after successes on the track.

He has also taken to the field in charity football matches in the past, showing his overall love for the game.

Lando Norris

Bristol City

Lando Norris has previously declared his love of local club Bristol City, though it appears that he doesn’t follow the sport anymore.

The McLaren driver was also a fan of Manchester United while Cristiano Ronaldo played for the club, and now no longer calls himself a football fan. It seems that mid-table mediocrity in the Championship just isn’t for him.

Esteban Ocon

PSG

The third follower on the grid of 2025 Champions League winners PSG is Esteban Ocon.

The Frenchman, who was born just two hours away from Paris, has even attended the Ballon d’Or ceremony in the past.
