For the 291st and final time, Cook bats for England

#ThankYouChef: A tribute to Alastair Cook

And now, the end is near. And so he faced the final curtain. All around the sun-bathed Oval they were on their feet in anticipation, well before Alastair Cook walked out – one last time – for England. There was not the guard of honour from the India players and the umpires that had ushered him onto the field in the first innings. There didn’t need to be. The applause from all those standing to greet him did it all.It swelled as he jogged down the steps ahead of Keaton Jennings and onto the pitch. On the big screen a list of his greatest achievements scrolled past one by one. There were many: the milestones, the major series victories, the number of games, the captaincy records and, of course, the runs. And as the numbers flashed up, still they applauded. He paused on the outfield for a quick stretch, went through the usual routine as he has done 290 times before and strode to the middle. And still they applauded. There was a handshake from Virat Kohli, as there was in the first innings as India’s fielders settled into their positions and Jasprit Bumrah walked back to the top of his mark. And still they applauded. It was as if the crowd could hold off the final moment by clapping all afternoon. It was the longest ovation at least one reporter could remember witnessing in person. And it was filled with genuine warmth.Eventually the ground announcer spoke and the crowd, almost reluctantly, hushed and took their seats. He took his guard and Bumrah ran in, thumping the ball into Cook’s thigh-pad. The air evaporated from the Oval as the crowd collectively held its breath and released with a rumbling murmur of relieved tension. The first ball had passed and the last innings had begun.

List of players released and retained by IPL teams ahead of the 2017 auction

Kevin Pietersen and Pawan Negi were among the high profile players released by the IPL franchises during the transfer window that ended on December 15

They offloaded a lot of their seamers and overseas players and will need to replenish those stocks. Kevin Pietersen, their most high-profile player to get the axe, had played only four games in the 2016 season before he was ruled out with an injury.ESPNcricinfo LtdPlayers released 8 (one overseas)Players retained 16 (six overseas)Purse spent INR 516,500, 000Purse remaining INR 143,500,000At a glance Dale Steyn suffered a shoulder injury during South Africa’s tour of Australia in November and was cut from the Gujarat squad; he played only one game for them last season. Gujarat retained the core of their squad -and most of their overseas players – after finishing top of the league stage in 2016. They released seven Indian players though, so their local contingent will need beefing up.ESPNcricinfo LtdPlayers released 4 (three overseas)Players retained 19 (five overseas)Purse spent INR 426,500,000Purse remaining INR 233,500,000At a glance Despite winning only four out of 14 games and finishing bottom of the league in 2016, Kings XI released only four players – the fewest among all the teams – and retained 19. David Miller was still listed as their top contract – INR 125,000,000 – despite making 161 runs in 13 innings last season. Sangakkara, for one last time in Tests

Watch the plays of the day from the fourth day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Aug-2015#SangaSignsOffThe time had come and Colombo knew how to make it special. Kumar Sangakkara strode out for the final time as a batsman in Test cricket through a guard of honour and a very noisy crowd. It was a chancy innings though. He was nearly run out off the seventh ball he faced. There were two crisp fours as well. But the innings would only last 18 balls.Memories of the manAlthough the fairytale ending was foiled, Sangakkara’s value and “what he was for SL cricket is something you can’t take away,” to quote his best friend Mahela Jayawardene. Australia thrive on new-found stability

The last time Australia played an unchanged XI for four successive Tests was back in 2004. It is likely that the 10-year drought may be broken in the fourth Ashes Test, a significant achievement considering how the team was formed in a chaotic 2013

Brydon Coverdale in Melbourne22-Dec-2013Darren Lehmann wondered out loud on Sunday when Australia had last chosen the same XI for four consecutive Tests. Nobody could fill him in. Lehmann should remember better than most, for it has not happened since the final four Tests of his career. Not since Australia beat New Zealand in Brisbane and Adelaide in November 2004, and then took a 2-0 lead against Pakistan in Perth and Melbourne the next month, has the same team taken the field for Australia in four straight Tests. It is possible that Lehmann’s first four home Tests as Australia’s coach will break that near decade-long drought, for the selectors will be loath to tinker with a winning team when the Australians take the field at the MCG on Boxing Day. Provided the fast bowlers, Ryan Harris in particular, have recovered well from their win at the WACA, it is unlikely that changes will be made; the resting of bowlers to prevent injury appears a distant memory.Already Chris Rogers, David Warner, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, Steven Smith, George Bailey, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris and Nathan Lyon have achieved more than most people believed possible, considering the way they were thrust together in an otherwise chaotic 2013.They are hardly the equal of the last XI to achieve the feat – Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann, Michael Clarke, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Jason Gillespie, Michael Kasprowicz and Glenn McGrath – but their 3-0 triumph so far in the Ashes series has raised the question of how long this side can stick together, given that seven of them are aged 30-plus. After the remaining two Tests against England, a three-Test tour of South Africa follows in February-March.”You judge it on each series,” Lehmann said in Melbourne on Sunday. “From our point of view, you’d love them to play as long as they can, but also you’re realistic about that. What we have to do is have them keep playing well so that they can stay in the side. That’s what they have to do individually and collectively.”We don’t look any further ahead than this Test match and then we’ll make our assessments at the end of the Test series and see where we go from there. But at the moment, the side is doing the job and, as I’ve always said, you try to pick the best XI each and every time to win the Test match.”It helps that every member of the side has contributed through the series, though some have offered more than others. Chris Rogers spoke on Saturday of his concern that he was the only member of Australia’s top five who was yet to score a century in this series. Given he is 36, that might otherwise have placed him under pressure to hold his place, but Lehmann said Rogers had been a valuable contributor in Australia’s opening partnerships, even if his partner David Warner had outshone him.”He, with David Warner, has had some good opening partnerships for us, which we didn’t get in England,” Lehmann said. “That’s a pleasing thing for us. It doesn’t expose our middle order and that’s what every team tries to do. [There was] the 150 they put on the other day in Perth when we had a lead but we had to start well, Brisbane I think we were 0 for 65 at stumps on day two, which was a really important opening partnership for us to take control of the game, so he has contributed.”The first innings at the WACA was less pleasing for Rogers, who was run out for 11 from nine balls when he attempted a suicidal single to midwicket and was well short when James Anderson hit the stumps at the bowler’s end. Rogers knew it was an opportunity missed on a good pitch.”I like to think I’m a smart guy, but that was very dumb,” Rogers said. “I think sometimes instinct takes over and I hit it harder than I thought I did and you don’t expect one of the best fielders in the world to be hanging out at mid-on, so I’ll try not to do that again.”And first-innings runs from the top order is one of the areas in which Australia should be aiming for significant improvement in the remainder of the series for, too often, Brad Haddin has needed to rescue the team from shaky situations.”We were 6 for 132 in the first Test, [4 for 174] in the second Test and five for a hundred and something in Perth,” Lehmann said. “Our top order know they’ve got to make some more runs, and one of the big things is making them in the first innings. We need our guys performing straight up on day one if we bat first.”The Australians gathered in Melbourne on Sunday after a few days in their home cities, and they will train at the MCG over the next three days as they aim to take a 4-0 lead. Nathan Coulter-Nile and Doug Bollinger will again be with the squad as reserves in case any of the fast bowlers are unable to back up from the Perth Test.

Not a total loss for New Zealand

Besides never agreeing to play in Sri Lanka in November again, three things each that Sri Lanka and New Zealand can learn from a rain-marred series

Andrew Fernando13-Nov-2012

New Zealand

Jeevan Mendis bowled aggressively to be the joint-highest wicket-taker in the series, taking five wickets at 16.60•Associated PressThe conservative batting strategy should get a longer trialNew Zealand made two competitive scores in three attempts, against a good attack in tough conditions. Considering their recent results, that is not a poor return, and that mindset needs to stay for now. With the two new balls that keep swinging around for longer, yet stay hard and hittable through to the end of the innings, and the new rule that rewards aggression through the middle overs, New Zealand may have struck upon a batting strategy that others may seek to emulate, particularly on pitches that offer something for the new-ball bowlers. BJ Watling has illustrated the benefits of this approach this series, and he should retain his place in the top three when Martin Guptill returns. This may mean that Rob Nicol loses his place, or that Brendon McCullum moves to the lower middle order, displacing either Andrew Ellis or James Franklin, but either way, New Zealand should not jettison a possible fix to their batting woes.Adam Milne should be selected more regularly – but perhaps without becoming a regularAny team with a 20-year-old capable of bowling at 150 kph needs to invest in him, but Adam Milne may not yet be ready to become part of New Zealand’s regular XI. He has a tendency to be wayward and often bowls too short, and time in domestic cricket may help him hone his game away from the pressures of international cricket. However, Milne would also benefit from testing himself against international opposition from time to time, and will learn lessons there that the New Zealand domestic scene cannot teach him. Bowling coach Shane Bond, who operated at a similar speed, had a similar build and a near identical action, and will also have plenty to add when Milne is with the team. New Zealand’s selectors may need to pick and choose which tours Milne plays in for now.Kane Williamson’s role in the batting order should be clearly defined in limited-overs cricketThroughout the World Twenty20 and at times in this series, Kane Williamson has been pushed down the order when the team has been after quick runs. There is a strong argument for Williamson being left out of the limited-overs sides altogether, not because he is unfit for them, but because at this stage of his career, he should focus solely on his Test game where his success is critical to the team’s future. If the selectors insist on playing him in ODIs, however, he must be given a concrete role in the batting order. It is not fair to ask him to bat at No. 4 in one match and No. 8 not long after, and they are unlikely to get consistent contributions from him if they continue to treat him that way.

Sri Lanka

The new ball pair remains effectiveSri Lanka’s pacemen, and Lasith Malinga in particular, have not had the most consistent year in ODIs, but against New Zealand, both he and Nuwan Kulasekara were menacing with the new ball. Malinga regularly beat batsmen outside off stump with movement, while Kulasekara’s away-seamer – a delivery he has only recently developed, matured fully this series. There were few loose deliveries from either bowler, and they created chances at every stage of the innings.Sri Lanka is still reliant on its experienced batsmenAngelo Mathews made a sparkling 50 in the third ODI, albeit against bowling hampered by a wet ball, but Sri Lanka’s youngsters have not yet blossomed in the top order. Lahiru Thirimanne was given two chances to impress at No. 3, but seemed unsure of how to balance aggression and defence. And although Dinesh Chandimal made 43 in the fourth ODI, he did so only after a nervy start in which he played and missed numerous times. They were given difficult conditions in which to impress, but their technical shortcomings appeared starker when their seniors handled the swinging ball with much more poise.Jeevan Mendis is a capable second spinnerMahela Jayawardene has been outspoken in his criticism of the new rule allowing only four men outside the circle. He had also outlined his case for why the new conditions will force teams to pick no more than one specialist slow bowler in their XI. Sri Lanka, however, have been served well by their spinning allrounder in this series, who finished joint highest wicket-taker. Jeevan Mendis’ short spell in the fourth ODI secured the series for Sri Lanka. He bowled aggressively throughout the series, despite the new rules that encourage bowling quicker through the air. He is yet to find consistency in his batting, but he is doing enough with the ball and in the field to embed himself in Sri Lanka’s XI.

The Mongoose and Nannes made my day

A Delhi-born college student is enraptured by Hayden’s new bat, and expects a sore throat over the next few days

Apoorv Singhal20-Mar-2010The game
I realised two weeks before this match that I could not be in the same city and not witness Nannes v Hayden live.Team supported
I was born and brought up in Delhi, so it would have been pretty strange for me to support any other team.Key performers
Though Dirk Nannes produced a magnificent spell of fast bowling and Virender Sehwag started off with a flier, it was Matthew Hayden who made the difference with a brutal innings. He scored nearly half the target in 43 deliveries and left the Delhi bowlers thoroughly dispirited. One thing I’d have changed
The pitch. Except Hayden, all the foreign recruits – David Warner, AB de Villiers, Albie Morkel and Justin Kemp – struggled to time the ball on the low and slow wicket. Really, if you can’t put grass on the wicket, the least you can do is ensure a reasonable degree of pace and bounce.Face-off I relished
Sehwag v Murali. You could see Sehwag itching to come down the wicket, but he was wary of Murali’s doosra and settled for knocking the ball around for most of Murali’s spell. In the end though, the doosra won the battle as Sehwag’s patience gave way and he charged down the track, only to mistime his slog and hole out to long-off.Accessories
As I was going to the stadium straight after college, the only accesories I took along were a couple of hooligan friends.Wow moment
I was going to choose between Kemp’s catch and de Villiers’s run-out – until the Mongoose came out. Seven swats later, I was left saying “Wow” for the rest of the innings. The Mongoose’s IPL debut wins this one.Player watch
Nannes was fielding in front of us at third man and was treated with loud cheers every time he looked around at the crowd. He returned the favour by waving and grinning from ear to ear.Shot of the day
For all the mighty blows by Hayden and Sehwag, in the end it was a crafty slice for four by Sehwag, which went a touch wide of short third man, off a short-of-length delivery from Murali, that wins this prize for me. Crowd meter
The stadium was full to brim and had come to life well before the match started. I bet everyone will wake up with a sore throat.Entertainment
Popular songs were played every now and then by the DJ, which kept a lot of spectators busy dancing. I think most of them had come prepared to have a good time, no matter how well Delhi did. A few guys playing and wearing traditional Punjabi attire, circling the boundary, kept the crowd going.Hardship factor
The parking facilities were reserved for the VIPs. There were temporary parking spots for the locals, but at a fair distance from the stadium. That and a thoroughly unsettling body search by the security guards at the gates aside, there wasn’t much to complain about.Twenty20 v ODIs
It’s not so much the format of the game as the quality of cricket that makes a match enthralling. I would kill to watch Flintoff steaming in to bowl to Ponting, no matter what the format. But at the moment, with half of all international one-day matches being one-sided, the Twenty20 format, with many more games ending tightly, is towering over it.Banner of the day
“Viru. Go ahead. Make my day.”TV or stadium?
No contest. In India, you watch a match in the stadium if you can. You get to shout like you can’t at your boss and dance like you can’t in front of your in-laws.Marks out of 10
8. A thoroughly entertaining, high-scoring match. Sehwag and Hayden treated the fans to some good, clean hits and Nannes bowled flat-out fast. No regrets about missing a couple of classes for this match.

John Stern reviews Keith Fletcher’s book Ashes to Ashes – The Rise, Fall and Rise of English Cricket

Keith Fletcher peers out from the cover with a world-weary look of concern as Mike Atherton, behelmeted, looks equally non-plussed. This was the England of Fletcher’s management in the 1990s. The words “insecurity”, “disappointment” and “sacked” appear in the first page and a half of the introduction. It is hard to believe that this man captained an Essex side renowned for their humour and jolly japery. The timing is odd. Although Fletcher is still involved with Essex he is hardly at the heart of the modern game. The book’s USP appears to be that he is the first man to have captained and coached England. Given that only five people have coached/managed England (and one of those was Ray Illingworth who also captained them) that doesn’t seem to be saying a great deal.It turns out that Fletcher was not that enamoured of international cricket either as player or coach. He says he “never relaxed when playing Test cricket” and raises a now common complaint about the insecurity and disharmony of England dressing rooms in the professional era. He didn’t even enjoy the victorious tour of Australia in 1970-71. “We were just a bunch of individuals coming together under the banner of MCC, some of whom looked after themselves and did not bother to assist newcomers.” Sound familiar? The last words of the book are “international cricket will continue to muddle along” which just about sums up its melancholic tone. Two and half stars –

Jaiswal and Zampa take Royals to the top of the table

Rajasthan scored the first 200-plus total in the IPL in Jaipur to beat CSK for the second time this season

Hemant Brar27-Apr-20232:35

The change in technique that has unlocked Jaiswal

After losing their previous two games, Rajasthan Royals not only returned to winning ways but also the top of the IPL points table with a thumping 32-run win over Chennai Super Kings. After Royals opted to bat, Yashasvi Jaiswal attacked his way to 77 off 43 balls. Super Kings did stage a brief comeback in the middle overs but late hitting from Dhruv Jurel (34 off 15) and Devdutt Padikkal (27* off 13) lifted Royals to 202 for 5, the first 200-plus total by an IPL team in Jaipur.Matheesha Pathirana, despite nailing his yorkers at express pace, was unlucky to concede 48 in his four overs, as 28 of those runs came when batters were not in control of their shots.Super Kings didn’t get the start they were after. Adam Zampa and R Ashwin further stifled them while sharing five wickets. Shivam Dube was the only one to offer resistance but it was too little, too late.Jaiswal leads the way for RoyalsEven if it was an away game for Super Kings, they seemed to have more supporters in the stands than Royals had. It didn’t have any effect on Jaiswal and Jos Buttler, though, as they gave Royals yet another flying start. Jaiswal kicked things off by hitting Akash Singh for two fours off the first two balls of the match, followed by one more in the over. He was even more severe in the seamer’s next over, picking up three fours and a six. In between, Buttler hit Tushar Deshpande for two fours. With seamers going for plenty, MS Dhoni turned to spin, and Maheesh Theekshana bowled a three-run over. Buttler, though, took the spinner for two fours – both times hitting length balls off the back foot over his head – in the sixth over to take Royals to 64 for no loss.Ravindra Jadeja broke the opening stand with Buttler’s wicket but Jaiswal kept marching on. Coming into this game, Jaiswal had scored 81 off 70 in the middle overs. Tonight, there was no slowdown; he smashed 37 off 22 after the field restrictions were lifted.Yashasvi Jaiswal once again took a liking to the Chennai Super Kings bowling•Getty Images

Jurel and Padikkal pick up after a brief lullDeshpande removed Sanju Samson and Jaiswal in the 14th over to briefly put the brakes on the scoring rate. From overs 14 to 17, Royals managed only 28 runs and lost three wickets along the way. It was starting to look like Super Kings might restrict them under 200 but Jurel and Padikkal, who came in at No. 6, threw their bat around. They didn’t always find the middle but the runs came thick and fast. Super Kings’ sloppy fielding also helped Royals, and left Dhoni visibly angry on more than once occasion, as they ransacked 56 in the last four overs.Zampa, Ashwin keep Super Kings on back footWith Trent Boult picking up a niggle, Zampa got an opportunity. And the legspinner made an impact in his very first over. Bowling the last over of the powerplay, he had Devon Conway hitting one to mid-off.Ruturaj Gaikwad was trying to make up for Super Kings’ slow start. He had moved to 47 off 28 balls when he tried to attack Zampa only to be caught at long-on. R Ashwin dragged Super Kings further back in the next over, the 11th of the innings, by dismissing Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu.Dube, Moeen fight backWith 130 needed from nine overs, Dube and Moeen threatened a fightback. The pair hit four sixes and a four in the next three overs, reducing the equation to 90 needed from the last five. Samson once again turned to Zampa, and he didn’t disappoint his captain. Dube launched him into the stands, and Moeen too picked up a boundary, but with his fifth ball of the over, Zampa had Moeen under-edging one to Samson.Dube, however, kept the fight on. He hit Jason Holder for a six and two fours in the 17th over. In the next, Jadeja took Sandeep Sharma for two fours but scoring 46 in the last two overs was too much of an uphill task.
