Joe Root 'realistic' on T20 World Cup ambitions for 2021

Rain robbed Root of chance to play his second T20 for Yorkshire since 2016 on Thursday night

Joe Root has said he is “quite realistic” about the difficulties he will face breaking into England’s first-choice T20I side ahead of next year’s World Cup in India.Since top-scoring in the 2016 World T20 final – a tournament in which he was England’s run-scorer, and memorably cracked a 44-ball 83 in a successful chase of 230 against South Africa – Root has made only 23 T20 appearances, with a lack of opportunities in the format costing him a place in the England side. After leaving the Test bubble following the third Test against Pakistan, Root was due to play his first T20 for Yorkshire since July 2018 and only his second since August 2016 in their Vitality Blast opener against Nottinghamshire on Thursday night. But persistent rain put paid to that, and Root told the club’s website that he was disappointed to have missed a rare chance to impress.”It’s disappointing we couldn’t get out there,” Root said. “I’ve been really looking forward to this. I’ve been desperate to play as much cricket as I can because, at the start of the summer, it didn’t feel like we were going to play any.”There’s uncertainty as to how much cricket we’ll play this winter as well. There’s definitely going to be plenty of time to rest, recuperate and stay mentally fresh ahead of potentially a busy back end of the winter.”Root said that he had not given up on his ambitions to play in the 2021 T20 World Cup, and said that he would “do everything I can” to press for a spot in the side.ALSO READ: South Africa snub leaves Root faces T20 World Cup lock-out”I’m not giving up on it at all, but I’m quite realistic in terms of where I am within the shake-up of things at the moment,” he said. “I want England to do well. I want us to go to World Cups and win.”If I’m not in the best eleven or the best squad, so be it. I’ll support whoever’s involved all the way through. I know how hard selection is, and if there are better options than me that’s part of international sport. I’m fully aware of that. But I’ll certainly do everything I can with the limited opportunities I will have to force a case.”Root also admitted that he had been “frustrated” by the long gaps between his appearances in the shortest format.”I’ve not had many opportunities to play T20 at all in the last couple of years,” he said. “It’s been a little bit frustrating, but it’s been no one’s fault. I’m certainly not upset or disappointed or bitter about anything, it’s just the way it’s fallen.”Probably because of it, I’ve lost my place within the England side, and that can happen in cricket. It would be nice to get an opportunity to play some games and try and stake a claim to force my way back into that squad.”But it’s a very talented team, and you look at the strength within it and the players in possession, they’re all fantastic players in that format. It’s great to see England in such a strong position in that respect.”Root could be involved in Yorkshire’s next fixture – at home to Derbyshire on Sunday – depending on England’s selection for the white-ball series against Australia in September.

'We were way off the mark, and we were hurt' – Eoin Morgan

England captain bemoans failure to adapt but backs new players to learn quickly from mistakes

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Feb-2020

Eoin Morgan admitted that England’s 50-over players were “way off the mark” in their first ODI outing since the World Cup final in July, but said that he expected the new members of the team to learn a huge amount from their failure at Newlands, after Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma capitalised on a sub-par batting performance to secure a comprehensive seven-wicket win.South Africa’s win was eventually sealed with 14 balls to spare after de Kock’s and Bavuma’s 173-run stand for the second wicket had broken the back of a 259-run chase. But their victory had been set up by an impressive performance in the first half of England’s innings, as they reduced the visitors to 131 for 6 before Joe Denly’s 87 helped post a serviceable total.”We were way off the mark, and we were hurt,” Morgan admitted at the post-match presentations. “South Africa completely outplayed us today in all departments. We’ve got no excuses. We didn’t adapt to the conditions today that were set in front of us, [because] we knew it wasn’t going to be an absolute run-fest.”But every batsman, apart from suppose Joe Denly and Chris Woakes really struggled to get going, which probably emphasises that we are a little bit rusty. But South Africa bowled well and accurately, they used the conditions really well with slower balls, and then we couldn’t penetrate the partnership between de Kock and Bavuma, so it made things very difficult for us. But full credit to them, they’ve started the series very well.”Asked whether England had misjudged a Newlands pitch that proved to be slow and awkward for fluent strokeplay, Morgan felt their failings had been more subtle than that, after a typically forthright fifty stand between Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow had given way to a mid-innings collapse of 6 for 80 in 18.3 overs.ALSO READ: De Kock 107, Bavuma 98 power South Africa to big victory”I think we lacked adaptation to the skill level that was needed,” Morgan said. “The guys up front came hard like they normally do, as we always try and do, but when that didn’t come off we had to try and rein in in a little bit.”I think we lost wickets in clusters, and when myself and Joe [Root] went at the same time, we continue to lose wickets until the Woakes and Denly partnership. But I suppose that total would only get us in the game if we if we bowled well and managed to take early wickets. but having let those guys get themselves in, it was a struggle to drag things back.”Nevertheless, having blooded two new ODI debutants in Tom Banton and Matt Parkinson, as well as handing a 50-over recall to Chris Jordan after a three-and-a-half year absence, Morgan conceded that his side was never likely to be the well-honed outfit that held its nerve in adversity to win the World Cup last summer.”I think they learned a huge amount,” said Morgan. “Failure is a huge platform to try and catapult yourself forward, and learn from your mistakes. As soon as you can, [you have to] implement them into this series.”I think the two guys making their debuts. Tom Banton and Matt Parkinson, have come in today and seen what international cricket is like,” he added. “They’ve had a little glimpse of T20 international cricket but it’s not all crash, bang, wallop, like we’ve seen today. So they learn a lot from tonight and hopefully take that into the rest of the series.”Despite the relative lack of jeopardy in this contest, Morgan insisted that the pain of losing was every bit as relevant to him and his team, given they are still the No.1-ranked ODI side in the world, with a proud recent record in their 50-over campaigns.”I think we need to continue to learn like we have done in the past,” he said. “You know you need to learn and identify exactly where you’ve got wrong, and I think ultimately today, we were outplayed because we were off the mark.”

Uh oh: Celtic could now sell “wonderful” star player in huge Parkhead exit

A concerning Celtic transfer update has emerged regarding the exit of a "wonderful" Hoops player, with a summer move away from Parkhead potentially on the cards.

Celtic transfer news

The upcoming summer transfer window is going to be an important one for Celtic, regardless of whether they end up winning the Scottish Premiership title over Rangers or not. By the club's usual high standards, performances haven't always been as impressive in comparison to previous years, which is why they will be second in the table if their rivals win their game in hand.

New signings could be needed to add new life to Brendan Rodgers' squad at the end of the season, and some potential additions have emerged in recent times, as they look to act fast.

Celtic midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

Paulo Bernardo is currently on loan at Celtic from Benfica, and such is the manner in which he has impressed at Parkhead this season, a permanent move to the club has been mooted. He has two league goals and assists apiece to his name in 2023/24 to date, as well as averaging 1.6 tackles per game.

Wolves left-back Hugo Bueno is seen as another possible target for the Hoops, having failed to snap him up in the January transfer window, with a summer switch potentially on the cards instead.

Celtic could sell "wonderful" O'Riley

According to a new update from Give Me Sport, Celtic could end up selling Matt O'Riley this summer if they receive a huge offer, as interest emerges from other clubs such as Brighton, Brentford and Leeds United.

"Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley will 'definitely' be in demand during the 2024 summer transfer window at Parkhead, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.

"According to GMS sources, O'Riley will be 'in demand' this summer, with a move to the Premier League a distinct possibility. The 23-year-old arrived at Parkhead from Milton Keynes Dons during the 2022 winter transfer window for a fee of £1.5m."

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

O'Riley is undoubtedly one of Celtic's most talented and influential players currently, so the idea of him moving elsewhere this summer doesn't bear thinking about. The 23-year-old Dane has scored 11 goals and registered 10 assists in the league this season, producing so much quality from his attacking midfield role. Rodgers has also lauded him in the recent past, saying:

"It is all about arriving in the areas and finding composure to finish. I really like him, his build-up play is good, he takes the ball, and he needs to work on his pressing and intensity but he is a wonderful footballer and he is a good guy as well."

There is always the chance that O'Riley feels that a fresh challenge is required, however, possibly moving to the Premier League, so it could be hard to begrudge him a move away, although it would be nice if he bowed out with a title win.

On the plus side, Celtic will be able to demand big money for the Denmark international, considering he is contracted at Parkhead until 2027, which could at least ease some of the pain of seeing him leave, should he decide to.

CSA CEO Thabang Moroe suspended for alleged misconduct

An investigation into his actions is expected soon

Firdose Moonda06-Dec-2019Thabang Moroe, the chief executive of Cricket South Africa, has been suspended with immediate effect – with full pay – following allegations of misconduct. An investigation into his actions, which will include an independent forensic audit, is expected to be conducted soon.Chris Nenzani, the CSA president, has been tasked with appointing an acting chief executive for the duration of Moroe’s suspension. Nenzani has been mandated to look at all options, including holding discussions with David Richardson, the former South Africa cricketer who was ICC chief executive till recently, to gauge his interest in getting involved with the CSA.ESPNcricinfo understands that former chief executive Haroon Lorgat, Moroe’s predecessor, and former acting CEO Jacques Faul, have already been approached by several provincial presidents, but neither has heard from Nenzani yet.ALSO READ: Crisis in South African cricket – full coverageMoroe’s suspension comes after five days of mounting pressure on CSA’s administration. There have been calls from several quarters for Moroe and the CSA Board to step down in the wake of a full-blown crisis spanning management, player and media relations, and financial affairs. The catalyst for the recent sequence of events was the revoking of accreditation of five journalists on Sunday during the Mzansi Super League. No reason was given for the sanction but on Monday morning, Moroe told a national radio station that the board was unhappy with the reporters’ coverage of CSA.The reports ranged from CSA’s disputes with SACA, including a court case over a proposed restructure of domestic cricket, the delay in appointing a director of cricket, which former captain Graeme Smith was being lined up for, the non-existence of a selection panel just weeks before a series against England, and CSA’s mounting expenses – and debts – including that of running the MSL.Taken together, this has left South African cricket in a state of turmoil, which will be discussed at a special sitting of the Board on Saturday, where it is hoped that clarity will be offered on key positions ahead of England’s visit.ALSO READ: ‘The CEO is out of his depth’ – Ali Bacher on CSA issuesOf particular concern is the position of director of cricket. Smith’s initial reluctance, and eventual withdrawal, was understood to be largely due to Moroe’s presence, and with Moroe suspended, Smith may be more willing to reconsider. However, there are less than three weeks before the Boxing Day Test against England, so decisions need to be taken swiftly.CSA has also interviewed former national selector Hussein Manack and suspended interim director of cricket Corrie van Zyl for the director of cricket position, and former selection convener Linda Zondi, former international Monde Zondeki, and current Jozi Stars selections convener Patrick Moroney for the role of convener of selectors. Those interviews were conducted with Moroe at the helm, and including members of the Board who have since resigned such as Dawn Makhobo, who walked away from CSA on Friday morning.A whirlwind of events this morning also revealed that CSA has suspended three other members of staff – financial manager Ziyanda Nkuta, procurement manager Lundi Maja, and administrator Dalene Nolan.Graeme Smith shares a laugh with Faf du Plessis•Getty ImagesThat brought the total number of suspended employees to seven, with van Zyl, chief operating officer Naasei Appiah, and head of sales and sponsorship Clive Eksteen sidelined last month for alleged dereliction of duty relating to a delayed payment of commercial rights fees to SACA, from last year’s MSL.Support for van Zyl, Appiah and Eksteen has been widespread, particularly from SACA, which claimed Moroe was privy to communication over the MSL payment and complicit in its delay. SACA has since said that there has been a second commercial rights violation, this time concerning a fantasy game for this year’s MSL, for which CSA had used players’ images they did not have rights to.On Wednesday, SACA said its members would consider a players’ strike in response to CSA’s lack of engagement, and while industrial action remains a possibility, it will not take place during the series against England.”SACA re-iterates however that industrial action by the players should be viewed only as a very last resort. We also wish to reassure cricket fans, and other cricket stakeholders, that SACA will not embark on industrial action with the players during the upcoming England series. We are very aware of the importance of this series to the Proteas and to England, to the many fans from both countries and to the media and commercial partners,” Tony Irish, SACA’s outgoing CEO, said in a statement. At a board meeting on Friday, SACA also called for Moroe and the CSA Board to step, an independent investigation into the crisis to be conducted, and an interim committee to be put in place to perform Board duties until a new Board is in place.”It is abundantly clear that there is no confidence, from any quarter amongst cricket stakeholders, in the CSA Board,” Irish said. “No one on the Board can say that he, or she, was unaware of what has been unfolding over at least the last year. It has all been happening, in many respects even publicly under the Board’s very nose, and in some instances with Board support.”Three independent board directors, Professor Shirley Zinn, Iqbal Khan and Mokhobo have resigned, leaving two more – Steve Cornelius and Marius Schoeman – as well as the six presidents from the affiliated provinces – Beresford Williams, Zola Thamae, Tebogo Siko, Donovan May, Jack Madiseng and Angelo Carolissen. Their futures could well be decided on Saturday.

The Lionesses ended their Euro 2025 qualifying campaign with a nervy goalless draw against Sweden away from home on Tuesday as they secured a berth in the main competition next year. Despite booking a spot in the Euros, captain Williamson was unhappy with the team's overall performance throughout the qualifying campaign.

AdvertisementWHAT LEAH WILLIAMSON SAID

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the Arsenal star said, "I've worked hard to be back here. This team knows how to fight, we've proved that over and over. But now we need to get back to our top level, there is a new top-level and we need to be able to find and get to it. The campaign has tested us but we have come through it. We were not able to top the group, which we are not happy about, but we qualified and that gives us a year to literally squeeze everything we can out of ourselves.

"High stakes games make players but you can't always work on what you need to. You have to play the game in front of you to get what you need. It is good preparation for us to have the friendlies in place, we know what is ahead of us next summer. We are reigning champions so we know we should qualify but we take pride in the fact that we have."

Manager Sarina Wiegman was also left disappointed with England's performance, especially against Sweden as they narrowly avoided defeat. The Dutch manager also outlined the areas where her team needs to improve to defend their title in Switzerland.

Spain player ratings vs Georgia: Rodri rescues La Roja before Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams run riot again to set up mouth-watering Euro 2024 quarter-final with Germany

After falling behind early on, Luis de la Fuente's side battled back as the Manchester City midfielder led from the front in Cologne

A Rodri-inspired Spain overcame an early scare to romp to a 4-1 win over a plucky Georgia to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, where they will take on hosts Germany in a mouth-watering clash between two of the tournament favourites.

For 17 of the first 18 minutes in Cologne, Spain had nearly 90 percent possession and put relentless pressure on Georgia; but one breakaway attack later, Robin Le Normand put the ball into his own net after a wicked cross into the six-yard box by Otar Kakabadze.

The Georgians looked so threatening on the counter-attack, and just when it looked like it could be one of those days for Spain, talisman Rodri guided a superb strike into the bottom corner six minutes before the break.

Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili repeatedly kept Spain at bay until Lamine Yamal's inch-perfect cross was headed in by Fabian Ruiz in the 51st minute, and Nico Williams' terrific run and finish in the 75th minute put the contest beyond doubt before substitute Dani Olmo stroked in a fourth seven minutes from time.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Unai Simon (6/10):

Nothing he could do about Le Normand's own goal but wasn't really tested on the night.

    Dani Carvajal (6/10):

Had his hands full with the irrepressible Kvaratskhelia and came off second-best against the flying winger.

    Robin Le Normand (5/10):

Failed to deal with Kakabadze's fizzing cross and the ball squirmed off him and into his own net. His place could be under threat for the quarter-finals.

    Aymeric Laporte (7/10):

Of the two centre-backs, he looked the more dependable one. Showed his experience when it was required.

    Marc Cucurella (8/10):

Chelsea must be thinking, 'Where has this player been?'. In attack and defence, the left-back looked impressive.

    Midfield

    Pedri (6/10):

Started with some neat touches and flicks but went into his shell for a while after Georgia's opener. Was hooked not long after the break after a subpar display.

    Rodri (8/10):

When players needed to stand up and be counted, the Manchester City man delivered the goods with an excellent finish into the corner. A towering display in midfield.

    Fabian Ruiz (7/10):

Like much of his team-mates, began brightly but then was somewhat cowed by going behind. However, he was in the right place at the right time to head in Yamal's beautiful delivery.

    Attack

    Lamine Yamal (7/10):

After a relatively quiet first half by his standards, the 16-year-old burst into life with a magical assist for Spain's second. Should have grabbed at least one goal on a night that would have been a good learning experience for the Barcelona star.

    Alvaro Morata (5/10):

Question marks may be asked over why this man is Spain's captain. The striker didn't offer a great deal up front.

    Nico Williams (7/10):

At times, he looked unplayable, but when Spain conceded, the winger appeared seemed a bit predictable. After looking quiet for long periods, Williams scored a goal of individual brilliance to seal the win. Towards the end, he was a joy to watch.

    Subs & Manager

    Dani Olmo (8/10):

His passes in the final third were a delight and got a deserved goal late on. Putting his hand up to start the next game.

    Alejandro Grimaldo (7/10):

Provided a bit more of an attacking threat down the left in a wing-back role.

    Mikel Oyarzabal (6/10):

Didn't do a great deal when introduced.

    Jesus Navas (7/10):

Nearly grabbed an assist at the death as he continues to show that age is just a number.

    Mikel Merino (N/A):

On to give Rodri a late rest.

    Luis de la Fuente (7/10):

His team were stung by conceding first, but they kept their cool, continued playing the same way, and got a crucial goal before half-time. This was their toughest game of the tournament and they did well to overcome this banana skin. De la Fuente's substitutes also helped give Spain extra control and go onto win comfortably.
