Revealed: Why Robert Sanchez is now Chelsea No.1 despite Djordje Petrovic form as Blues eye another goalkeeper in summer transfer window

Robert Sanchez is reportedly the No.1 at Chelsea despite Djordje Petrovic's bright form as the Blues eye a fresh goalkeeper in the summer.

  • Sanchez to reclaim No. 1 spot from Petrovic
  • 26-year-old deemed suitable to Enzo Maresca's style
  • Blues could still look to hire a new shot-stopper
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Petrovic took over the starting role from Sanchez last season and delivered several commendable performances under former head coach Mauricio Pochettino. However, with Enzo Maresca now at the helm, the goalkeeping situation has taken a different turn.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Maresca prefers Sanchez for the role of starting goalkeeper. The 26-year-old Spaniard is believed to be more suited to Maresca’s style as he has proven his capability to play out from the back in training. While Sanchez is seen as the frontrunner, Chelsea acknowledge the need for another goalkeeper with a similar skill set to ensure a seamless transition if changes are necessary. Although Petrovic is highly rated, there are concerns about the disparity between his abilities and those of Sanchez.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Chelsea are aiming to construct a squad capable of competing across a demanding season, including next summer's Club World Cup. This requires having reliable alternatives for all positions. However, the London outfit are not seeking a high-profile No.1 goalkeeper like Mike Maignan. Instead, they are targeting a promising stopper who can initially serve as a backup but has the potential to challenge Sanchez for the starting role. Despite Spanish reports linking Chelsea with Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin, he does not align with the club’s requirements.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PETROVIC?

The future of Petrovic remains uncertain. While there are discussions about a potential loan or sale, Chelsea are said to maintain that they are not doubting his talent. The club values Petrovic, but the immediate need is for a goalkeeper who can match Sanchez's style of play and provide reliable competition.

Liverpool may regret losing Drogba 2.0 who was sold for less than Henderson

Over the years, Liverpool's academy has produced some of the Premier League's best talents, with players such as Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and, more recently, Trent Alexander-Arnold all emerging from the youth ranks.
Additionally, they have also managed to harness the talents of other clubs' players who didn't quite cut it in their teams or who the Reds saw potential in.
Some examples of these players are Harvey Elliott and Raheem Sterling. The pair each came from Championship teams before seeing their talents developed further with the Merseysiders.
Although the latter chose to leave the club in 2015 in order to join Manchester City for a fee worth a reported £49m, Elliott has become part of the furniture at Anfield.

Liverpool's Harvey Elliott.

The 20-year-old recently made his 100th appearance for the Reds against Luton in the Premier League. During that time, he has amassed a total of 15 goal contributions and, at times, has managed to cement himself within Jurgen Klopp's first team.
This season has been the youngster's most prolific. It seems that, as he gets older, he is becoming more mature and focused on his game and is managing to find his place within the squad.
Across the 2023/24 campaign, he has managed to score two goals and provide three assists for his teammates, while it is also looking likely that he could be featuring in Liverpool's upcoming Carabao Cup final due to the recent injuries the Reds have suffered in the centre of the park.

Despite Elliott's Liverpool career thus far going swimmingly, aside from the odd injury here and there, there have been some Liverpool youngsters who weren't given the chance to flourish under Klopp's wing.
An example of one of these fringe figures is that of Taiwo Awoniyi. The current Nottingham Forest striker joined the club in 2015 at just 18 years old and endured many loan spells during his time on Merseyside, prior to exploding elsewhere…

Taiwo Ayoniyi's Liverpool career

The Nigeria international joined Liverpool for a fee in the region of £400k from Imperial Academy in his home country.
When asked about what it meant to be joining Liverpool, he said the following: "This is the biggest club in the world, and I’m privileged to be here. I’ll try to develop myself very well so that when I come back to Liverpool I’ll be able to add value to the team."
Despite just joining the club, the then-teenager was instantly loaned out to German side, FSV Frankfurt.

That swift exit came about as the youngster was having problems with regard to acquiring a work permit to play football in the UK. These problems would be set to follow him throughout his Liverpool tenure.
After joining the club, the attacker only managed to appear a total of 14 times for Frankfurt and only amassed a total of two goal contributions during that time.
Then, for his next six seasons at Liverpool, he was loaned out to various clubs across Europe, including spending two seasons at Belgian club, Royal Excel Mouscron. It was during those two seasons in Belgium that the Nigerian had his most prolific time in front of goal – netting 21 times in 47 games.
During the 2020/21 campaign, he spent his time on loan with Bundesliga side, Union Berlin, and made a total of nine goal contributions during his spell with the club.

His performance over the season ended up being enough that the striker managed to finally get a permanent move away from Liverpool after the German side bought him for a fee of £6.5m.
This move occurred just after he was finally granted a work permit to play football in the UK after spending six years of his professional career bouncing around other clubs.
Awoniyi's permanent transfer away from Liverpool was expected. However, the fact that the striker was sold for less than ageing midfielder Jordan Henderson – who departed for Al Ettifaq on a £12m deal last summer – is something the Reds may live to regret.

At the time, this was Union Berlin's club-record fee, and it seemed as if it was money well spent, as, despite not having the most prolific of campaigns the season prior, he managed to score a total of 20 goals in all competitions and assist a total of five times during the 2021/22 season.
This sudden burst of form was by far and away the most prolific of the attacker's career and, to this day, it still stands as his strongest goal-scoring season.
His performances for Union Berlin didn't, however, go unnoticed. After Forest's promotion from the Championship in the same season, the club were looking to make some additions to strengthen their side.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

This resulted in Forest making a total of 30 signings across the season, with Awoniyi being among those.

Why Jamie Carragher loves Awoniyi

Since arriving in Nottingham for a fee worth £17.5m, Awoniyi has been a constant figure within the Garibaldi squad. During his time at the City Ground so far, he has managed a total of 46 appearances and has contributed to 20 goals.
Although he hasn't yet found the form he showed in his final season at Union Berlin, he has cemented himself within the Forest system superbly, even leading to praise from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher who has compared him to Premier League icon, Didier Drogba.

Didier Drogba

Discussing Awoniyi's strike against Southampton back in May, Carragher exclaimed: "He reminded me of Drogba as soon as I saw the goal. Absolutely brilliant. I've been in that position as a defender. The turn – and bang. Brilliant."
Drogba, of course, enjoyed a remarkable stint in English football at Chelsea – across two spells – notably scoring 164 goals and providing 88 assists in 381 games for the Blues, while also winning a plethora of major honours, including the Champions League in 2012.
Awoniyi has a way to go to emulate the Ivorian's heroics, although the 6 foot marksman has already scored more than half of the goals he bagged in England's top-flight last season, netting six times from just 14 outings.

His form thus far sparked even more talk from pundits and Carragher doubled down on the praise he lauded the former Liverpool man with last season.
"The first touch is unbelievable centre-forward play. Holding the centre-back off because don’t forget he’s got no space, he knows the goalkeeper is going to be converging on him," Carragher said.
"I’m a huge fan of his. His goals towards the end of the season kept Forest up and it could do the same again."

Liverpool's "special" £4m star is now worth 1175% more

Jurgen Klopp has shaped this rising talent into one of the Premier League’s most exciting prospects.

By
Angus Sinclair

Feb 23, 2024

Time will only tell whether Liverpool will live to regret selling the promising youngster after years of chasing a work permit for him.
One thing is for sure, however, and that is the fact that we will likely be seeing the £50k-per-week hotshot in England's top flight for many years to come.

Didn't expect such a long stint, but happy with results – Edulji

Outgoing CoA member says her public differences with Vinod Rai weren’t anything personal, but just based on principles

Vishal Dikshit in Mumbai22-Oct-2019Among the first four members of the now outgoing Committee of Administrators (CoA), Diana Edulji has agreed with new BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s view of giving priority to first-class cricketers in India. Edulji said the CoA was working towards that but “could not finish” it. The CoA is set to hand over the reins of the BCCI to the new office bearers on October 23.Speaking on her penultimate day in the BCCI after meeting the other two CoA members to wind up their duties, Edulji also looked back at her 33-month period, including their achievements and even the differences she had with Vinod Rai, saying she did not expect her “nightwatchman” duties to last so long.”Yes, a lot more work [has to be done], we were working on that but could not finish it,” Edulji said in Mumbai at the BCCI headquarters about the first-class circuit. “The players, the domestic structure does need a look in, so we can attract more cricketers to the game and let’s hope for the best.”Among the numerous issues Ganguly has already addressed even before officially taking over as the president, was “taking care of” the share of revenue the BCCI gets from the ICC, which reduced in 2017. When asked if the CoA was somehow responsible for the drop in the BCCI’s revenue share, Edulji said, “I would not want to comment on that because I would not want to say I have done something wrong or they are saying something wrong. Let’s see how it goes forward, all the best to them (new administrators).”Appointed by the Supreme Court in January 2017, Edulji and Rai had taken over, along with Ramachanda Guha and Vikram Limaye, to oversee the running of the BCCI. Guha later resigned while Limaye moved on, and Lt Gen (retd) Ravi Thodge joined the duo of Rai and Edulji earlier this year.”It was a good experience and a long journey,” Edulji said. “Didn’t think that the journey would last so long, but I am happy with the end result that elections and office bearers are coming back and BCCI will be run by them now.”No, not all (no regrets). We (Rai and Edulji) have had our differences and we aired it openly also. In any organisation, that works. And I have always batted on the front foot or bowled my armers well, but no nothing personal. It was just (on) principles that stands were taken and that’s it.

“We (Rai and Edulji) have had our differences and we aired it openly also… I have always batted on the front foot or bowled my armers well, but no nothing personal.”Diana Edulji on her equation with Vinod Rai

“If I wanted to say something, I have always called a spade a spade and I don’t hold back. I have enjoyed my journey of 33 months, I never expected it to be so long, and as Mr Rai said, it was a nightwatchman, but this was more than a nightwatchman also. I’ve never heard of a nightwatchman scoring a double-hundred or triple-hundred (laughs). It was a great learning experience, handling BCCI and I hope I can do something more after I finish my cooling period (laughs).”Was the CoA able to implement all the reforms as they were defined by the Supreme Court and the Lodha Committee’s recommendations?”Yes and no,” she said. The CoA had taken over the supervision of the BCCI during troubled times after the board was hit by a betting scandal in the IPL and the matter was taken to the Supreme Court, but Edulji steered clear of blaming previous office bearers, under whom the board had landed in trouble.”I would not want to run down the people before, I wouldn’t say that we have done a better job than them,” she said. “Whatever role we had, we tried to complete our duties, let’s hope it goes forward and they take in the right spirit whatever we have done and move on. Life has to move on.”It is good that a [former] player [has become a president], he knows in and out what players’ require…when he was a player what he expected from BCCI, and now when he is sitting on that seat, I wish him all the best and let’s hope that he will do well and cricket should do well.”The final official CoA meeting with the three members lasted about two hours on Tuesday afternoon after which Lt Gen Thodge said they had finished implementing “almost” all of their tasks and responsibilities.”We’ve almost implemented things the way we wanted to,” Thodge said. “There are certain things to be done, our status report has been submitted to the court and we’ll see whatever comes.”Thodge also elaborated on the conflict of interest issue that’s been coming up time and again, and was even mentioned in the CoA’s 11th and final status report they submitted to the Supreme Court last week.”We (CoA and Ganguly) are in agreement with it and the last time when we had a meeting here, Sourav attended on video conference from Calcutta and we had lots of discussions on that issue,” Thodge said. “He’s aware, and it’s one thing that needs to be addressed otherwise we’ll have a problem in having anybody as a coach or for any BCCI appointment it will be an issue.”So to facilitate cricketers being involved in the cricket administration, it is essential that conflict of interest has to be relooked into, it’s not that it should totally go. Where the personal and financial benefits are there, those will be taken care of. But if the interest of cricket suffers because of conflict of interest then it needs to be addressed. I think he (Ganguly) has mentioned that same point because we had almost a three-hour discussion at that time and he’s got his views on that.”

Postecoglou’s £3.75m Celtic signing is now worse than Taylor

Celtic needed two late goals in stoppage time to secure a 3-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers brought Norwich City loanee Adam Idah on for Kyogo Furuhashi at half-time and the Ireland international scored twice put the Hoops in front, having been 1-0 down.

The 23-year-old marksman has already scored four goals in four league appearances for the club, and appears to be on course to become one of the manager's best signings of the season.

Norwich forward Adam Idah.

Most of the boss' key players – including Matt O'Riley, Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Kyogo Furuhashi – were brought to the club by his predecessor, Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian tactician rarely missed in the transfer market with some fantastic signings in his two years at the club, with O'Riley, Kyogo, and Jota among the most impressive moves.

However, Postecoglou did not always get it right and Argentine left-back Alexandro Bernabei is one example of that, as the flop has endured a tough time in Glasgow and is worse than current first-choice Greg Taylor.

How much Celtic paid for Alexandro Bernabei

The Scottish giants swooped to sign the defender from Lanus, in his home country, for a fee within the region of £3.75m in the summer of 2022.

Upon signing for the Hoops, Bernabei revealed that the manager had faith in him and his ability to adapt to life in Scotland quickly to make an impact on the pitch.

It was a significant fee to pay for a young left-back, particularly when you consider that the club paid £3m to sign Taylor from Kilmarnock back in 2019, who had yet to reach 100 first-team appearances.

The Argentina U23 international had played 88 senior games for Lanus prior to Celtic deciding that they wanted to bring him over to the Premiership.

He had established himself as a regular starter for his former club in the Liga Profesional during the 2021 campaign, though, with 23 league starts that year.

As you can see in the table above, there were some warning signs for Celtic in his performances in his home country as opposition players found it a little bit too easy to get the better of him at times.

He was dribbled past 1.4 times per game and lost more than half of his physical duels across those 24 league outings throughout the 2021 season.

These statistics did not suggest that Bernabei was set to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch as an attacking left-back, with a lack of goals and assists, or that he would be able to deal with the physicality of Scottish football.

Of course, the young full-back was signed at the age of 21 and Postecoglou may have viewed him as a long-term signing who could develop his game in and out of possession.

Alexandro Bernabei's Celtic career in numbers

It has not gone to plan for the now-23-year-old defender, though, as he has struggled badly in the Premiership and failed to establish himself as a regular option for either of his managers.

Postecoglou handed him 15 appearances and nine starts in the Scottish top-flight during the 2022/23 campaign as Taylor retained his place as the first-choice at left-back.

The Argentine dynamo did provide an attacking threat down the left flank with one goal and three assists in those nine league outings, which is a return of one assist every three starts on average.

Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei.

However, Bernabei struggled out of possession as he failed to step up to the level of physicality required of a left-back in the Scottish league.

The 23-year-old dud lost 60% of his duels, including 63% of his battles on the deck, in his 15 Premiership appearances, which shows that opposition players found it far too easy to get the better of him.

He was also dribbled past 14 times and gave away a penalty in those nine starts as the young flop failed to provide a solid defensive presence at the back for Postecoglou.

As you can see in the table above, Bernabei has also struggled to find his top form under Rodgers in the Premiership so far during the 2023/24 campaign.

The Argentine defender, who was recently criticised for his "weak" defensive work by ex-Hoops full-back Mark Wilson, has not offered much in an attacking sense and has still been poor off the ball as the opposition have got the better of him too easily.

Put simply, Postecoglou endured a rare transfer howler by signing him as he cost more than £750k more than Taylor, yet is worse than the Scotland international.

Greg Taylor's season in numbers

The former Kilmarnock star has been the first-choice option for Rodgers in the number three position and been an excellent performer for the Hoops.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor.

Only Luis Palma (12) has created more 'big chances' for their teammates than Taylor (eight) in the Premiership so far this season, which highlights the impressive work the Scottish ace has done at the top end of the pitch.

The 26-year-old whiz, who has scored two goals, has produced 1.9 key passes per game and produced the assist for Idah's equaliser against Motherwell on Sunday with an excellent left-footed cross.

Defensively, Taylor has only been dribbled past 19 times in 24 league starts, which is less than once per start on average. Whereas, Bernabei has been dribbled past 19 times in 12 starts since the start of last season in the top-flight.

He has also won 54% of his duels on the ground in the Premiership this term, which shows that the current first-choice left-back can hold his own on the deck and deal with the physicality of the division.

Therefore, Taylor is a better option for Rodgers than Bernabei as opponents find it harder to dribble past him, win a lower percentage of their duels against him, and the Scottish gem has the quality to offer more in possession.

Therefore, Postecoglou had a howler with the signing of the Argentine dud as he cost more than the Scotland international, despite currently being worse than the ex-Killie ace.

Euro 2024 travel guide: Beer, food and drink prices for fans in Germany

Of course, everyone looks forward to watching stars like Jude Bellingham grace the field at Euro 2024, but some fans enjoy the finer things in life, like picking up dirt-cheap beer and soaking in the atmosphere of fanzones.

However, drinking does have its negatives, as the emotion of football and the intoxication can often lead to scraps and needless arguments between fanbases, which has put a downer on events in previous tournaments gone by.

Regardless of this, heading down the pub before the game is a necessity in most football fans' pre-match ritual, so Football FanCast has tried to gather all the best information on potential prices and the best locations for fans heading to Germany this summer…

Aston Villa now want to sign 26 y/o Bundesliga midfielder ahead of West Ham

Aston Villa reportedly hold an interest in signing a new midfielder as NSWE look to back Unai Emery at the end of the January transfer window.

Aston Villa transfer rumours

Emery is currently on course to take the club into the Champions League next season after an outstanding first season in charge at Villa Park. The club have made Villa Park a fortress and made history with a club-record 15th consecutive home Premier League victory back in December.

Something that has helped Villa this season were their additions over the summer, however, they have been relatively quiet in the winter window.

Teenage right-back Kosta Nedeljkovic has been the club’s only addition so far in 2024, joining for an undisclosed fee from Red Star Belgrade before heading back to the Serb Superliga club on loan.

Middlesbrough attacker Morgan Rogers has emerged as the top target for the remainder of the window, as per reports, with Villa already having two bids turned down for the Championship star. Should Villa get their man, they would have bolstered their defence and attack, and to cap things off, they also appear to be looking at a new midfielder.

Aston Villa eyeing Florian Neuhaus move

According to German outlet Bild in the last 48 hours, Villa are keen on beating rivals West Ham in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus, with clubs across Europe also keen on the Germany international.

“Selling Neuhaus is not an issue with Gladbach because his contract has just been extended by four years without an exit clause. But probably a loan. So far there have been loose inquiries from Lazio Rome and Sevilla FC, but the lead to England is more concrete: West Ham United and Aston Villa want to play with Neuhaus for the Champions League places.”

Neuhaus is 26 years of age and is primarily a central midfielder but can also turn out in holding and advanced midfield roles when required. He has spent the entirety of his career so far in Germany and has been on the books of Borussia Monchengladbach since 2017. During that time, Neuhaus spent a season on loan with Fortuna Dusseldorf but has become a regular for his current employers and is now approaching 200 appearances.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig once labelled Neuhaus as the most underrated Bundesliga midfielder under the age of 23, and he was once valued at €38m by Transfermarkt.

He could well be viewed as a replacement for Leander Dendoncker, who is reportedly in talks to join Napoli on loan, and by the looks of things, Villa may have to act fast if they want to win the race for Neuhaus’ services.

Manchester United now eyeing Brighton-esque centre-back signing

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United are planning to revamp the club's defence in the summer, with plenty of turnover possible. After the club elected not to activate their option to extend his contract by a further year, Raphael Varane could leave as a free agent at the end of the season, as could 2023 signing Jonny Evans. Elsewhere, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are up for sale if the Red Devils receive appropriate offers.

United are looking into some high-profile deals for possible successors like Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt, Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite and Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo, but based on a recent report, they could also go after a hidden gem to form part of their long-term vision for their back four.

Man Utd in touch over Brighton-esque signing

According to Boca Juniors news outlet Planeta BJ, Manchester United have made contact over Aaron Anselmino. He's caught the eye of the Premier League club, as well as other top sides in Europe, with his exploits so far.

Boca recently tied Anselmino down to a new contract, one that includes a release clause worth just under £16m, but there's a provision in the deal that raises that sum beyond £20m for the final days of the transfer window. The goal may be to ensure that they don't lose the player so late that they can't replace him.

The Argentine club negotited these fresh terms on the back of losing left-back Valentin Barco to Brighton earlier this month. The Seagulls only had to pay £7.8m for his signature under an outdated clause, and Boca believed that fell well below his market value. Determined to avoid a repeat with Anselmino, they will insist on his new clause being met in full.

Anselmino's breakthrough at Boca

18-year-old Anselmino has made five first-team appearances for Boca so far and they will hope there are many more to come. He earned his full debut in the cup against Racing Club in October and kept his place for the next fixture against Estudiantes before featuring against Newell's Old Boys.

In the league, he played the whole second half of a 1-1 draw with Lanus in November, and then enjoyed a brief substitute outing versus Sarmiento. Having not made the matchday squad at all until that game against Lanus, he would be named on the bench for seven of his side's last eight fixtures overall, which may be a preview of an ascension to a much more significant role next season.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

As mentioned above, Brighton have already signed a player from the Buenos Aires outfit this month, and this too would feel very much like a Seagulls-esque deal. In recent years, they've picked up players like Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo from South America and turned them into rising stars coveted by Liverpool and Chelsea.

While United's business model wouldn't revolve around selling Anselmino on for profit, it might be sensible to invest in talented players like him at source and save plenty of money further down the line, even if £20m might seem a little steep at first. Signed in tandem with a couple of the bigger names mentioned above, he could form part of an astute midfield rebuild at Old Trafford.

Before battling it out for this year's Women's Champions League title, finalists Barcelona and Lyon are unsurprisingly well-represented in GOAL's XI

Barcelona and Lyon will battle it out for the Women's Champions League title on Saturday in Bilbao in a match that all-but signals the end of the season for most of the women's leagues in Europe, as attention prepares to turn to international breaks and the Olympic Games.

It's been a campaign all about defending titles, with Barca, Lyon, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Roma retaining their league crowns in the continent's biggest leagues, and the Catalans will certainly hope that remains the theme on the continent as they set out for back-to-back titles, albeit against an opponent that has beaten them in their two previous meetings in the final.

Before that huge fixture takes place this weekend, though, it's a chance to reflect on the season that has been and its star performers. So, without further ado, here is GOAL's European Women's Team of the Season…

GettyGK: Mala Grohs (Bayern Munich)

Bayern Munich’s second successive Frauen-Bundesliga title was built on a similar foundation to last year’s triumph, that being a truly rock solid defence, and Mala Grohs’ contributions to their insane record at the back should not go under the radar.

Grohs kept 14 clean sheets in 21 Bundesliga outings this season, conceding just seven times, despite the expected goals statistics saying that she should have conceded on more than 11 occasions. While that is also thanks to the great defenders in front of her, no goalkeeper who played two or more games in the competition had a better save percentage than the Bayern shot-stopper. That’s quite a stat given she plays for Germany’s best team.

Bayern didn’t have the success in Europe they might’ve hoped this year, falling victim to the ‘group of death’ which saw Ajax and Paris Saint-Germain qualify at the expense of themselves and Italian champions Roma, but it should be noted that Grohs put in some strong performances despite that outcome.

AdvertisementGettyRB: Ellie Carpenter (Lyon)

If you’re having a conversation about the best right-back in the women’s game, then Ellie Carpenter is well in the mix. Returning to action midway through last season after a devastating ACL injury, it understandably took the Australia international a bit of time to get back to her best level, but it feels like she’s approaching that right now.

Still only 24 years old, Carpenter is a reliable performer, the kind of player you always get a seven out of 10 performance from as a minimum. Her tireless energy up and down the right flank are a feature for club and country and allow the attack and the defence to be supported at all times.

That she saved one of her best performances of the season for the Division 1 Feminine play-off final against PSG tells you all about her ability to step up in the biggest moments, too, helping Lyon to claim yet another league title.

GettyCB: Jess Carter (Chelsea)

One of Carpenter’s Lyon team-mates could’ve lined up next to her in this XI here, such has been Gridge Mbock Bathy’s solid return after an injury-hit 2022-23, but it’s Chelsea’s Jess Carter who gets the nod instead thanks to her heroic defensive displays that helped keep the Blues in check at the back despite so many absentees. Carter had five centre-back partners this season at Chelsea because of injuries and really stepped up with captain Millie Bright missing for most of the campaign in particular.

She was a colossus in the Champions League semi-final first-leg win over Barcelona and one of the Blues’ best performers in the return game at Stamford Bridge, too, turning up for the big occasion despite an eventual defeat for Emma Hayes’ side. Carter’s consistency was key in Chelsea’s ability to retain their WSL title, too.

GettyCB: Ingrid Engen (Barcelona)

When Barcelona lost Mapi Leon to a serious knee injury back in December, it felt like the European champions suddenly had a huge weakness in the team. Leon is arguably the very best centre-back on the planet; how do you replace someone of that calibre?

But Ingrid Engen, moving back into the heart of defence from her more regular midfield role, has stepped up brilliantly to ensure Barca haven’t felt Leon’s absence as strongly as one might’ve expected. That Irene Paredes, Leon’s usual centre-back partner, has also been out for spells this season only makes Engen’s displays more impressive.

“My situation has changed a lot,” she told in April. “When an opportunity like the one I had arises, you have to seize it – and that's what I'm doing.”

Newcastle make step to sign "quality" £52m David for Howe in January move

Newcastle United have suffered the consequences this season for failing to bring in adequate depth during the summer transfer window. Whilst injuries have stopped them in their tracks, the Magpies' poor planning in their first season in the Champions League under Eddie Howe has left them struggling for form in all competitions. Now that they're out of both European football and the Carabao Cup, however, Newcastle could look to turn their focus towards Premier League improvement and the January transfer window.

With that said, reports suggest that those at St James' Park are eyeing a move to sign one particular star who could finally solve their depth problem in attack come next month.

Newcastle transfer news

At the time, bringing in Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall seemed like smart business from Newcastle. Now though, it seems anything but. Tonali is at the start of a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules, Barnes is sidelined through injury and Hall is struggling to break into the side, leaving just Livramento to play a starring role out of those who arrived in the summer window. When next month arrives, Newcastle will hope to avoid such a disaster.

Lille striker Jonathan David.

According to Marco Conterio, Newcastle have entered the race to sign Lille forward Jonathan David and have already made contact to test the waters with the Ligue 1 side over a potential deal.

The striker has previously been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur when Fabrizio Romano reported that David's price tag was as high as £52m. With that price unlikely to have suddenly dropped, if Newcastle want to bolster their attacking options in January, it looks as though they'll have to spend big once more, making the window all the more interesting.

"Quality" David can compete with Isak for a place

Given Alexander Isak's injury history as of late, David could be the perfect incoming for Howe and Newcastle. The Magpies are in desperate need of a reliable option to lead the line, with Callum Wilson's injury record even worse than his fellow Newcastle forward, handing Howe quite the headache. David's stats show that he would be more than capable of keeping up with the duo too, even though he's not enjoying his best season in France.

David, meanwhile, has been at the centre of praise from Canada boss John Herdman, who told TalkSPORT: “Jonathan is one of those silent assassins. He’s very clued up tactically and that’s what I really enjoy about Jonathan, he really wants to get into the details of the game and understand the pressing tactics. The forwards at times want to understand other elements, he knows he’s going to lead that defensive line and will get into the details of that with you.

"For him, he’s a quiet player around the environment and a quiet presence and has this killer instinct. Tactically very organised and very away, but with that instinct to be able to ghost into a penalty area and do what he does best and that is score. To have a player of that quality who can take that moment, it really makes a difference. One who does the work excites me and I know the players really respect that.”
