Man Utd make first move for bargain Varane replacement in summer deal

Whether it be rumours surrounding Erik ten Hag's future or showing the door to certain players to make room for incomings, reports suggest that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in for a busy summer at Manchester United.

Man Utd transfer news

The international break has seen Ten Hag's future come into question more than ever at Old Trafford, with England boss Gareth Southgate and Brighton & Hove Albion's Roberto De Zerbi topping Ratcliffe's reported shortlist.

That means the pressure is on Ten Hag to turn this season around, be that in the form of a top four finish in the Premier League or an FA Cup win. As things stand, United sit sixth and nine points adrift of the Champions League places and are on course to face Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final after knocking Liverpool out.

Meanwhile, in another ruthless act, United are reportedly ready to accept offers for Christian Eriksen this summer after the Dane lost his place to new young star Kobbie Mainoo, who has been one of few bright sparks at Old Trafford.

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The midfielder may not be the only one to depart, either, with Raphael Varane's contract set to expire in the summer of 2025 and the Frenchman's future still uncertain. This will leave the Red Devils with quite the gap to fill, allowing a Serie A target to potentially come in.

Man United make first move to sign "fast" new player who could cost £100m+

The deal may not come cheap…

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Manchester United have made enquiries over signing Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, who is valued at just €20m (£17m) ahead of the transfer window. United will need to act quickly, however, with Atletico Madrid also interested and that price likely to rise if Lucumi enjoys a solid Copa America tournament with Columbia this summer.

Still only 25-years-old, Lucumi should be entering his prime as a central defender to potentially hand United a bargain replacement for Varane when the summer window swings open.

"Ridiculous" Lucumi can replace Varane

Whilst replacing a defender who was once a serial winner at Real Madrid will be far from easy, Lucumi certainly represents a solid choice to turn to. The stats even show that the Bologna man has outperformed Varane in a number of areas so far this season.

Described as "ridiculous" by South American football expert FranHCLO, Lucumi has more than earned a big move after a superb season at Bologna. Thiago Motta's side currently sit as high as fourth and remain on course to sensationally qualify for the Champions League in one of the stories of the campaign.

It would represent a change in United's transfer policy for the better if they managed to land a bargain replacement for Varane. Where they previously splashed the cash to sign name value above all else, reports suggest that the Red Devils are acting far wiser with Ratcliffe at the helm.

Ireland consider hosting Bangladesh T20Is in England

Cricket Ireland confirmed fixtures for 2020, including visits from Bangladesh, New Zealand and Pakistan

Ireland are exploring the possibility of hosting their T20Is against Bangladesh next year at neutral venues in England. With the redevelopment of Clontarf, Ireland’s capacity to host international matches has been reduced and Warren Deutrom, the Cricket Ireland chief executive, said the board was looking at various temporary options. After last week’s announcement that the scheduled Test against Bangladesh would be converted into a T20I due to the “financial headwinds” being faced by Cricket Ireland, fixtures for next summer’s home schedule have now been confirmed. Bangladesh will arrive for three ODIs at Stormont in May; New Zealand’s tour will encompass three T20Is at Bready and three ODIs at Stormont; and Pakistan are due for two T20Is at Malahide in July.”There is no doubt that this will remain one of the biggest home seasons for Ireland, with the hosting of the number one T20I side in the world, and the runners-up at the most recent 50-over World Cup,” Deutrom said. “However, this has also undoubtedly been our most complex match allocation process ever, given the multiple challenges we are working through. Chief among these is the loss of access to one of our international grounds for at least 2020, with Clontarf undergoing extensive renovations.Ireland fixtures for 2020

July 2 – 3rd ODI v New Zealand, Stormont

July 12 – 1st T20I v Pakistan, Malahide

“With this venue loss, we have been reduced to 12 pitches available across our three remaining international grounds that need to cater for 15 matches. Given the ICC’s high standards of expectation regarding pitch quality, this has influenced several of the match allocations. Also key to our deliberations has been the need to provide a high volume of white-ball cricket given the T20 World Cup in October and the start of the World Cup Super League.”The four T20Is scheduled to be played against Bangladesh in the second half of May could end up being hosted outside of Ireland, according to Deutrom.”The outstanding fixtures that remain unallocated at this stage are the T20 Internationals against Bangladesh,” he said. “We are currently investigating venue options that will fit with our limited scheduling windows and fresh pitch availability – this includes looking at an option of hosting the Bangladesh T20Is in neutral venues in England as a temporary option until our venue and pitch capacity is back at full strength.”Deutrom also confirmed that Cricket Ireland is still planning to play its part in hosting the Euro T20 Slam, which was postponed in 2019 over a lack of financing. “We stated last week that we were still hopeful of staging the inaugural season of the Euro T20 Slam and we have put plans in motion to facilitate that should our discussions with the organisers progress positively,” he said. “We shall be providing further information on that in due course.”

Will Sutherland makes debut impact as Victoria take charge

Victoria bowled themselves into a strong position on the opening day at the MCG by dismantling Queensland for 183.The wickets were shared around as Peter Siddle, still hoping to keep his name in the Test frame, and Jon Holland claimed three apiece while James Pattinson and debutant Will Sutherland claimed a brace each. Charlie Hemphrey’s half-century kept Queensland in the contest. It was Sutherland, with his third delivery on first-class debut, who made the opening incision in the 19th over, after sustained pressure from the Victoria quicks, when Bryce Street drove to point where fellow debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk took the catch – combined age for the wicket: 37.Sutherland’s second came when he found Matt Renshaw’s edge from around the wicket and Victoria’s morning became even better with the last ball of the session as Siddle had Marnus Labuschagne well caught at first slip for a 28-ball duck to leave Queensland 3 for 32 from 28 overs.Siddle struck again after the break when Nathan McSweeney was caught behind and the innings slipped to the depths of 7 for 99 as Pattinson and Holland claimed their first wickets. The ship was steadied somewhat by a 55-run stand between Hemphrey and Mark Steketee with Hemphrey compiling 64 from 130 deliveries before he was Pattinson’s second wicket.Holland wrapped up the innings as Steketee chopped on and Blake Edwards was caught at slip, but the final three wickets added 84 useful runs.On a day that was interrupted by showers, Victoria’s openers got through 6.4 overs before play was ended for the final time.

BCB dismisses two NCL coaches for failing to select legspinners

Board president Nazmul Hassan also lists out further major changes in BPL, including preferable batting positions to Bangladesh batsmen

Mohammad Isam17-Oct-2019The BCB have dismissed two NCL coaches for failing to carry out the board’s directives. Rangpur Division coach Masud Parvez Razan didn’t pick Fardeen Hasan, and legspinner Rishad Hossain, while Dhaka Division coach Jahangir Alam also lost his job for not picking legspinner Jubair Hossain in the playing XI during the second round that began on Thursday.BCB president Nazmul Hassan said both coaches have been issued with a show-cause notice for not picking the legspinners, with the BCB keen on implementing certain rules in domestic cricket to help strengthen the national side. ESPNcricinfo has learned that both Masud and Jahangir have already been replaced by Zafrul Ehsan and Mohammad Salim, as the Rangpur and Dhaka coach, respectively.”We gave clear instructions to play legspinners in the NCL, but neither [Jubair Hossain] Likhon nor Rishad [Hossain] were picked in the XI in this round,” Hassan said. “We have show-caused two coaches from Dhaka and Rangpur for not selecting the legspinners despite being told to do so. We have to give them game time. How else can they improve otherwise?”BPL set for further radical changes

The BCB have already put in place a rule for quick bowlers and legspinners in the BPL, and Nazmul Hassan said batting orders too would be mandated based on the national team’s interest.
“They must have a legspinner in the squad and if he is a local, he must be picked in the best XI. Teams should also set a batting order which is consistent with how the Bangladesh players are suited or needed in international cricket,” Hassan said. “We will give preference to fast bowlers who bowl 140kph. You can call this season’s BPL as preparation, a trial for the World T20.”

This is the first time that the BCB has taken such drastic action against coaches for not picking a legspinner. Over the years, domestic sides in Bangladesh have mostly opted for left-arm spinners and offspinners, leading to a paucity of legspinners in domestic cricket that has been lamented by players, coaches and selectors. Jubair did make his international debut in 2014, but though he had the backing of Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza and then coach Chandika Hathurusingha, he didn’t get the same backing in domestic cricket. The BCB has reportedly made it mandatory for first-class sides to pick legspinners in their XIs in the 2019-20 season. Minhajul Abedin Afridi, whom the chief selector first spotted as a net bowler in Chittagong last year, made his first-class debut in Chittagong Division’s previous match, while Aminul Islam Biplob, who made his T20I debut last month against Zimbabwe, made his debut for Dhaka Metropolis.Hassan said that in keeping with their plan to troubleshoot weaknesses, the BCB have also put in place rules for BPL teams to pick a local or foreign legspinner in every game, as well as give preferable batting positions to Bangladesh batsmen, whether in the top or middle-order.”They must have a legspinner in the squad and if he is a local, he must be picked in the best XI. Teams should also set a batting order which is consistent with how the Bangladesh players are suited or needed in international cricket.”We will give preference to fast bowlers who bowl 140kph. You can call this season’s BPL as preparation, a trial for the World T20,” he said.Hassan said that players will also require a fitness test to play in the Dhaka Premier League from this season, a first in the tournament’s history, while the bleep test level will be raised further next year. “We will raise the fitness level next year too but we will inform them at least a year in hand.”Players have to pass fitness test to play Dhaka Premier League too, and all of them have to be done in Dhaka,” he said.”Suggestions from the senior team’s coaching staff are being taken seriously,” Hassan said. “After the World Cup, our fielding coach pointed out that there’s a basic lack in fitness and understanding of fielding’s basics among our national team. Some of them can’t even throw properly. We are working on all the suggestions from the support staff. Initially we will stumble, but it is the best for the long-term,” he said.Hassan said that the board’s focus is building a side by 2021, so that they have a settled group by the 2023 World Cup in India.”We have been playing to win, but now we will do some experiments, as part of our long-term plan. Some of our decisions may seem different but by 2021, we want to build a solid team for the 2023 World Cup. A team that can serve Bangladesh for at least four or five years,” he said.

Jasprit Bumrah out of South Africa Tests with stress fracture

Umesh Yadav will replace the fast bowler in India’s squad

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s No. 1 fast bowler, has been ruled out of the Test series against South Africa, which begins in Visakhapatnam on October 2. Bumrah has suffered a “minor stress fracture in his lower back,” according to a BCCI press release. The injury came to light “during a routine radiological screening.”Umesh Yadav will replace Bumrah in India’s Test squad. The emergence of Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami as India’s first-choice fast-bowling combination has reduced Umesh’s opportunities of late, limiting him to only five Tests since the start of 2018. In his second-to-last Test, however, he picked up a career-best match haul of 10 for 133 against West Indies in Hyderabad.Watch cricket on ESPN+

India v South Africa is available in the US on Hotstar and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the three Tests.

Bumrah’s injury is a significant blow to India. Since his Test debut in January 2018, he has quickly established himself as one of the world’s most dangerous fast bowlers, picking up 62 wickets in 12 Test matches at an average of 19.24. He already has five-wicket hauls in each of the four tours he has been on – South Africa, England, Australia and the West Indies – and the series against South Africa was to be his first at home. This is the second time Bumrah has had to miss Tests due to injury. A thumb injury, picked up during a T20I against Ireland in Malahide, forced him to miss the first half of India’s tour of England last year, including the first two Tests. The stress fracture, though, will worry India a little more since it was not sustained on the field of play.India have been mindful of Bumrah’s workload, resting him from the limited-overs legs of their tours of Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies earlier this year. Some, though, believe it will help Bumrah’s fitness to play as much cricket as possible.”Bumrah should play as many games as possible, I always endorse that,” the former India quick Zaheer Khan told when asked what the best way to preserve Bumrah would be. “More matches you play, more experience you get. That bowling rhythm and fitness is very important. You have to strike that right balance.”The way Bumrah has evolved in such a short span of time has been remarkable. He is a thinking bowler. You can achieve such success, when you keep improving, keep thinking, keep upgrading.”

Zimbabwe not to travel to Bangladesh for T20I tri-series

The FICA has urged the ICC to consider the effect the suspension will have on Zimbabwe’s players who have ‘endured years of hardship under the previous board’

Zimbabwe will not be able to stage their domestic competitions in the coming season, or fulfil their Future Tours Programme (FTP) itinerary and other international obligations, including the tour to Bangladesh for a T20I tri-series that was to include Afghanistan in September, according to a statement released by Zimbabwe Cricket on Saturday. For their part, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has suggested that Zimbabwe’s participation in the tri-series is up to ZC, and they themselves remain fluid in their response to the situation. If Zimbabwe do not travel, as seems likely, the tri-series will turn into a bilateral affair.Zimbabwe’s suspension from the ICC this week has also jeopardised both the men and women’s teams’ participation in the T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019.”The ICC had also awarded Zimbabwe the right to host another global qualifier event next, but that now hangs in the balance,” ZC’s statement read.”In all this, players and staff are bearing the brunt of the standoff and they might be forced to go for months or forever without their salaries and match fees,” the statement continued.Sikandar Raza had said that the ICC’s actions had brought an end to both his and several other cricket careers, while allrounder Solomon Mire has already announced his retirement from international cricket.Zimbabwe’s isolation has also thrown the women’s side, which won the Africa Region T20 qualifying tournament in May, into disarray. Their tour to Ireland was cancelled at the last minute, while it appears impossible that they will appear at the T20 Qualifier tournament in Scotland, starting next month.”A chance for a ticket to different life, for millions of women out there in Zimbabwe,” national captain Mary-Anne Musonda tweeted. “For generations of girls and women to come. Vanished in 3 weeks. Okay. Life. I’m sorry Lady Chevrons. I led. I tried.”Meanwhile, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) has urged the ICC to consider the effect that Zimbabwe’s suspension will have on the players in that country.”The Zimbabwean players have endured years of hardship under the previous board of ZC,” FICA executive chairman Tony Irish said. “This has included many instances of non-payment and frequent breaches of their playing contracts. We have asked ICC to consider some mechanism to enable player contracts to be honoured despite the unfortunate suspension of the new board of ZC.”Some of the domestic players in Zimbabwe live a hand-to-mouth existence, and there is an important ‘human’ element to this situation which we believe needs to be addressed.”ZC has offered to submit a new financial audit and set aside their differences with the Sports and Recreation Commission, which in June suspended the entire ZC board and set in motion the chain of events that led to Zimbabwe’s suspension, “in an effort to find amicable solutions that will avert expulsion and the total demise of the game”.”We would like to see our teams playing again as soon as possible and the ZC board is ready to cooperate with the SRC and other stakeholders to get Zimbabwe back to operating within the confines of the ICC statutes again,” ZC’s statement read.

Newcastle keen on signing Premier League ace after Joelinton injury blow

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing an "outstanding" player this month, with internal talks held over a move to St James' Park.

Newcastle transfer & injury news

It's fair to say that this has been a season to forget for the Magpies so far, having had such high hopes of doing special things in 2023/24. There have been plenty of reasons for Newcastle's struggles, whether it be finding it hard to adapt to midweek Champions League games, expectations from supporters putting more pressure on the team, and of course, injuries.

Endless fitness issues have held Eddie Howe's side back badly in both the Premier League and Europe, and Joelinton's recent groin issue means he could even miss the rest of the campaign, acting as a massive blow.

It looks as though Newcastle are looking to act fast to find a replacement for the Brazilian, with Bournemouth ace Philip Billing one player who has been linked with a move to St James' this month. Kalvin Phillips is still a potential target, too, although talks over a switch do appear to have cooled.

Newcastle want Amadou Onana

According to an update from reliable journalist Luke Edwards on X, Newcastle are keen on signing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, as they look to make up for the loss of Joelinton:

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

He wrote: "Newcastle United looking into signing Everton’s Amadou Onana to solve midfield problem."

A loan move is potentially on the cards, with a temporary switch then a possibility in the summer, allowing Newcastle to see if he is worth persevering with at that point.

Onana could be a brilliant signing by the Magpies in the January window, with the Belgian someone who has so many attributes that could appeal to Howe, whether it be his physical prowess or technical ability.

Given his age and stature within the Toffees side (he is an ever-present when fit under Sean Dyche, the 22-year-old has so much long-term potential, too, and with Everton already docked 10 points this season and threatening to face further punishments, he could feel that Goodison Park is not the best place to stay. He has been hailed as "outstanding" by journalist Connor O'Neill, while former Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has said of him:

"He's a strong personality. He never hides, he asks for the ball and he dares. He is one of the most talented young players in Europe."

Onana could be an excellent replacement for Joelinton between now and the end of the season, providing similar levels of power and influence in the middle of the park – he has averaged 2.6 tackles and 2.2 aerial wins per game in the league this season – and much like the current Newcastle hero, he could be a good foil for the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff.

Newcastle interested in signing new "very good" midfielder

He could make up for the loss of Joelinton.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 20, 2024

Should he come in and be a big success, the Magpies would be foolish not to consider signing him permanently in the summer, with the Belgium international someone who should only get better in the coming years.

Northants get concussion sub for Alex Wakely after accident at home

Alex Wakely, the Northamptonshire captain, has withdrawn from his side’s County Championship match against Sussex and been replaced with a concussion substitute after suffering a head injury at home. The 30-year-old Wakely was taken ill before play on the second morning, telling medical staff at the club that he had hit his head on a low beam at his home. An assessment on the ground detected signs of concussion and determined that he could take no further part.Northamptonshire have been given permission to replace Wakely in the team with a concussion substitute, in this case Josh Cobb, who has been cleared to take Wakely’s place as a batsman, although he will not be allowed to bowl.David Ripley, the county’s head coach, said: “Alex actually drove to the ground this morning as normal but was sick after he got here and it was clear he was not well.”He explained that he had banged his head on a beam last night and after an examination by our medical staff it was decided he was showing signs of concussion. He has not gone to hospital but clearly we are monitoring his condition to see how he progresses. His welfare has to come first.”We were not sure we would be allowed a substitute as the injury did not happen during the game but the regulations do allow it and after we had spoken to the Sussex captain it was agreed that Josh Cobb could take his place.
