Losing whole summer would cost over £300m – ECB chief executive

Tom Harrison said an entire home summer without cricket was “not an outlandish scenario”

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Apr-2020Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, has estimated that an entire season without cricket will cost the game in England and Wales “well in excess of £300 million”.In a letter to PCA chief executive Tony Irish, seen by ESPNcricinfo, Harrison admitted that the ECB is “having to reset our future plans across the whole game in order to ensure its long-term survival” in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which threatens to wipe out much of the English summer. The ECB unveiled an initial £61m support package on Tuesday night, aimed at ensuring both professional and recreational cricket can withstand the impact of the ongoing crisis. But with its reserves worth £11m in 2018-19 – down from £73m in 2015-16 – the potential cost of a season without cricket is a major concern.ALSO READ: PCA stall on ECB’s request for players’ 20% pay cutAs things stand, the season’s start has been pushed back to May 28 at the earliest, though that is little more than a holding date. The ECB is currently modelling what the season might look like with possible start dates in June, July and August, as well as planning for games to be played behind closed doors. In his letter, dated March 29, Harrison described the ongoing pandemic as “the biggest challenge the sport has faced in the modern era” and admitted that “although the full extent and impact of the pandemic on cricket is as yet unknown, it is already clear that it will be extremely significant”.

“Losing an entire cricket season – which is not an outlandish scenario – will cost cricket in England and Wales well in excess of £300m”Tom Harrison letter to Tony Irish

“At the start of 2020, cricket in England and Wales was in a very strong financial position,” Harrison wrote. “Our recent renewals of media rights contracts and commercial partnerships all but guarantee our revenues and provide a high level of relative security for the next five years. With this relative security, we have been able to build a strategy for growth, based on strong investment in our core, to grow cricket and thus secure our long-term future.”This strategy has seen hugely increased investment and commitment to our players across our international and domestic game, with substantial improvements both to the pay and the conditions under which professional cricketers are employed across first-class county clubs (including raised salary collar and caps).”We have also been clear that investment into grassroots cricket is critical to creating a sustainable sport, hence our commitment to recreational programmes, to reinvigorating cricket in schools, to the women’s and girls’ game and creating the next generation of volunteers.”The investment, however, is fundamentally based on the proviso that cricket is played and thus the value proposition delivered to our broadcast and commercial partners. Whilst a range of scenarios is contemplated to account for lost matches or series across the term, a situation like the one we are facing is beyond the scope of any risk assessment and therefore has extremely serious consequences for the game’s revenues. With this public health crisis, and its likely impact on this coming season, we are thus forced to review every investment and every line of cost.”The English season has been delayed until May 28 at the earliest•Getty ImagesHarrison went on to state that “everyone is feeling the pain”, listing broadcasters, commercial partners, county stakeholders, and “ordinary and loyal cricket fans” among the groups affected.”As I have said, we can only estimate the total financial impact on the game, which will not be clear for some time, but by way of offering an indication of the potential scale of the loss to the game, losing an entire cricket season – which is not an outlandish scenario – will cost cricket in England and Wales well in excess of £300m,” Harrison wrote.”Our absolute priority in the face of this challenge is firstly, to ensure the public safety of our people – our staff, players and colleagues around the game, but secondly, that the cricket network remains intact, and emerges from this crisis in a state to resume our trajectory towards a bright future.”An excerpt from Tom Harrison’s letter to Tony Irish•ESPNcricinfo LtdHarrison himself has taken a 25% salary cut for at least the next three months – he was paid £719,175 in 2019 – while ESPNcricinfo understands that other executives have volunteered a 20% cut. Some ECB staff were informed on Wednesday morning of a decision to furlough them.On Tuesday, Harrison dismissed criticism of the ECB’s forward planning. “You can normally make business models and forecasts where you might get a 15-20% fall in revenue,” he said. “[But] there are very few businesses that would put a complete drop in revenues to zero on a risk register.”I don’t think there is a big enough reserves pot to anticipate this sort of challenge. And it is important to base any judgement on our reserves policy against the money that has gone into the network: we have a thriving network, a high-performing sport and well-paid players.”Eoin Morgan, England’s white-ball captain, said that “the serious nature of the situation economically and financially for the game is something that we have never come across”.”Certainly I’ve never experienced anything like it and don’t think anyone else has,” Morgan said. “Times are still uncertain at the moment, there’s information coming out daily, weekly, and the most important information is probably yet to come given the last week or 10 days we have had in isolation.”People are waiting to see what sort of impact that has had on the virus and if it has slowed things down or stopped the increase in infection. Realistically we can’t think about playing, when our first game will be, or how many we will play until the situation is downgraded from a pandemic.”

Rangers hopeful of agreeing deal with "brilliant" Ibrox star Clement loves

With the Scottish Premiership title race still hanging in the balance, Rangers have turned their attention to handing Philippe Clement a boost away from the pitch, with the Gers now hopeful of putting an end to a frustrating contract saga.

Rangers contract news

As things stand, it's set to be a busy summer of departures at Ibrox, with Leon Balogun, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack and Jon McLaughlin all among those set to leave as free agents. It's quite the act from those at the club, but one that may leave Clement room to make his mark in his first summer transfer window in charge.

Clement must make a few changes to his starting XI ahead of the trip to face Dundee…

ByRoss Kilvington Apr 17, 2024

On that front, Rangers have already been linked with permanent moves for Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes in moves to bolster Clement's attack. The Gers will be hoping to have the lure of champions heading into the summer, but it remains to be seen whether they can force another slip from Celtic and regain any advantage in the title race.

One player who will undoubtedly play a part in that ambition is John Lundstram and Rangers will hope that remains the case. The former Sheffield United midfielder looked on course to leave with contract talks stalling and his deal running out. Now, however, according to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Rangers are hopeful that an agreement can be reached with Lundstram with talks ongoing.

It would be quite the turnaround if the Gers managed to keep hold of Lundstram, with clubs in England still keen, and it also looked as though contract talks were proving to be all too difficult. With time running out, both parties must make their decisions one way or another, especially as Rangers' title fight continues to take unexpected twists and turns against Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Clement added to the confidence regarding Lundstram's future, recently saying: "I'm totally confident about that. There's a lot of love on both sides so then there will be a solution one moment."

"Brilliant" Lundstram is key for Rangers

Whilst several changes are on the cards this summer, Rangers would be wise to do everything in their power to secure Lundstram's future. The experience that he adds could be key for several sides and remains important in the Gers' bid for title success in Scotland.

Rangers'JohnLundstramduring training.

Having started in all but three of Rangers' Scottish Premiership games this season too, it's clear that Clement sees Lundstram as a crucial part of his side. If he does leave on a free, meanwhile, then the 30-year-old will be one to watch, having earned plenty of praise during his time in England.

Former manager Chris Wilder was among those with nothing but good things to say, once saying: “I’ve got to say…I thought John Lundstram was outstanding when he came on. He’s come out the team for a couple of games. He’s been brilliant for us. His energy levels have dropped down but we’ve got genuine competition and John knows that”.

Sunderland could axe Ekwah by unleashing their 7/10 “genius” instead

Mike Dodds, despite being first viewed as a breath of fresh air after the dismal reign of Michael Beale was cut short, has failed to get Sunderland going ever since coming back in as interim boss.

If Sunderland were to pick up another crushing loss against Southampton today, it would mean the stand-in 37-year-old Black Cats manager has experienced four losses from four Championship games back in the dug-out with the Wearside outfit, sinking down the division at a worrying pace consequently.

Yet, one good result could turn around the club's fortunes completely with Dodds scrambling in his head as to what changes he could make to kickstart a positive sequence of results starting with a possible win over Russell Martin's Saints.

Pierre Ekwah could well be on the chopping block for fresh blood to get a chance to star tomorrow as a result, the ex-West Ham United youngster not at the races in his side's 1-0 loss to Leicester City mid-week.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

Pierre Ekwah's performance vs Leicester in numbers

The exciting 22-year-old midfielder underwhelmed against Enzo Maresca's Foxes in truth, with the Frenchman failing to register a single shot on Mads Hermansen's goal to try to add more goals to his season tally of four.

Moreover, Ekwah wouldn't deliver a single accurate cross or complete a single dribble in the 1-0 defeat as the hosts – away from just the Sunderland number 39 in isolation – failed to ever really cut through the table-topping visitors with much purpose or drive.

Dodds could be tempted to stick by Ekwah regardless of his poor showing last match considering his heroics the last time the Black Cats faced off against Southampton.

The ex-Hammers youngster bagged two goals on the day as Sunderland romped home to a 5-0 win at the Stadium of Light, the Mackems' only win against their tricky South Coast opponents from the last five meetings between the two former Premier League outfits.

Regardless, Ekwah shouldn't be retained off his poor showing against Leicester alone with Adil Aouchiche champing at the bit to come in and impress over his fellow compatriot after an impactful cameo off the bench against the Foxes.

Adil Aouchiche's performance vs Leicester in numbers

The former Paris St. Germain prospect has had a stop-start time at the Stadium of Light since swapping France for Wearside last year, but will hope he can kick on after excelling against Maresca's men when drafted on to make an impact.

Aouchiche would notch up an impressive three key passes from just 30 minutes against Leicester, constantly wanting to create openings from the second he was introduced into the contest.

The slick 5 foot 11 midfielder was unafraid to test Hermansen with shot after shot as well in contrast to a timid Ekwah who managed zero, registering five shots on the Danish goalkeeper's net to keep him on his toes when other players took a back seat.

Despite only being on the pitch briefly, Aouchiche would receive a glowing 7/10 appraisal from Roker Report journalist Andy Tomlinson at the full-time whistle – Tomlinson stating that the ex-PSG man 'really troubled' Leicester.

Once described as a "little genius" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig during his days in the France U17 ranks – where Aouchiche netted a staggering 16 goals from 25 appearances – Dodds will want to see this electric best from his slick creator carried over a full 90-minute match.

Today's game could be the best chance to see what the 21-year-old is made of from the start, a potential masterstroke switch from Dodds if the dynamic French talent can steer Sunderland to a rare win.

Darren Bravo too good a player to be 'washed up on the shore' – Michael Holding

Darren Bravo was dropped from West Indies’ squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan, but former fast bowler and current commentator Michael Holding believes the left-hand batsman is “too talented to be left out”.ALSO READ – West Indies selector Roger Harper backs Bravo to return to Test sideHolding’s endorsement comes after chief selector Roger Harper also backed Bravo to return to the side.”I would tell him to find something that works. If he has a technical problem – and I don’t know if that is the case – I would tell him to find someone and get it sorted,” Holding said on the podcast this week. “If it’s just a matter of going through a bad rut and you don’t know exactly what the problem is, again find someone who is highly qualified and skilful enough to look at you and suggest something that may be going wrong and try and get it sorted.”Bravo still has a central contract, having been awarded an all-format deal in July.”Him being out of the team, I hope he will not take it personally and won’t be upset,” Holding added. “I just read that Jonny Bairstow was left out of the England team, and I also read that the chairman of the selectors and another selector actually went to visit him and sat down and talked to him. I hope that they will do the same thing for Darren Bravo. He is too skilful and talented a player to just be washed up on the shore. He is too talented to be left out.”Holding also advocated for West Indies going back to their traditional strength of fast bowling, and supporting upcoming pace bowlers by preparing pitches accordingly. He cited India’s example, and their recent stock of pace bowling riches, to emphasise his point.”I would hope that the pitches in the Caribbean will be prepared to encourage fast bowlers,” Holding said. “Because if you don’t have pitches that encourage fast bowlers, you’re going to struggle. Look at India. They have started [to] prepare different pitches over the last six-seven years, and they’ve started to produce a lot of fast bowlers. And they are now winning series away from home. That is what you need.”Look at the quickest pitches renowned in the Caribbean – Jamaica and Barbados. Where have most of the Caribbean fast bowlers come from? Jamaica and Barbados. In recent times, a few more have been coming out of Antigua. But Trinidad have not produced a lot. Ian Bishop definitely would have been a great but for injury. Colin Croft was from Guyana. But those flat pitches that don’t encourage people to run in and work hard, will not produce fast bowlers. So one would hope that pitches that have good pace and bounce will be prepared in that manner so that we can encourage our youngsters to bowl fast.”

Move over Son & Richarlison: Spurs already have "fearsome" Kane heir

Tottenham Hotspur finished the 2022/23 campaign as 5-1 victors at Elland Road, with Leeds United relegated and Spurs finishing eighth in the Premier League. No European football and plenty of concerns coming right up.

It was the nadir of a series of years that have failed to deliver, the promise of Mauricio Pochettino's sculpted squad flaking away since his dismissal back in 2019, months on from an agonising Champions League final defeat.

Ange Postecoglou, fresh from impressive dominance with Celtic, was appointed in June and his first campaign in London has been filled with promise, though fifth-placed and fluctuating in form, there is much still to do.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

In fairness, the Australian did have to contend with the sale of club record scorer Harry Kane, and while a direct replacement was not signed, certain players have stepped up to fill some rather large boots.

Heung-min Son & Richarlison's season in numbers

Heung-min Son has long been regarded as one of the Premier League's deadliest goalscorers but he was guilty of poor performances last season, bagging just ten league goals as his side trundled to an unsatisfying conclusion.

That's still a somewhat respectable return, however, and far better than the ignominious efforts of Richarlison, who scored one Premier League goal all season following his £60m transfer from Everton in the summer of 2022.

The dynamic duo – both effective on the left or up front – have succeeded in wreaking dejection through their clinical finishing, adversaries of true strength for opposing backlines.

They are doing a brilliant job and have kept Tottenham in contention for an emphatic return to the Champions League, the London club five points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa but with a game in hand.

However, neither will serve as the true centre-forward to succeed Kane in the long term, and while speculation throughout January suggested that the end of the campaign will see the signing of a first-rate striker, Postecoglou might just have the perfect heir already within his grasp.

Alejo Veliz could be Harry Kane heir

Indeed, Kane was sold to Bayern Munich in a reported £100m deal back in August, a move that came as a surprise to no one given Spurs' issues and the England captain's burning desire to end a career-long trophy drought.

Just days earlier, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had finalised the £13m signing of teenage centre-forward Alejo Veliz from Argentinian side Rosario Central, with the talented player hailed for his "fearsome" performances in his homeland by former youth coach Adrian Dezotti.

Alejo Veliz.

Intelligent, energetic and clinical, the 6 foot 1 Veliz has the makings of a classic Premier League forward and could match Kane in his world-class finishing and decision-making down the line, if not so creative and effective in his playmaking.

Now 20 years old, Veliz has moved on loan to Sevilla for the latter half of the 2023/24 season, having made two substitute appearances so far.

He did actually find the back of the net for Tottenham despite playing just 42 minutes of Premier League football since his arrival last summer, finishing true with a bouncing effort off the bench in a winter cameo against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Described as a prospect with a "complete" skill set by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Veliz ranks among the top 13% of positional peers for goals scored, the top 1% for clearances and the top 10% for aerial duels won per 90, as per FBref, which certainly does speak of a burgeoning roundedness.

And it is this ability, an inclusion of many different facets, that could allow Veliz to succeed Kane not only as Tottenham's most reliable and destructive source of goals, but as a player who can transcend the role of centre-forward to enhance and polish the performance of those around him.

Kane, for example, might be one of Europe's superlative marksmen but he also ranks among the top 21% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 6% for progressive passes per 90.

Given the fluency of Postecoglou's set-up and the requirement for dynamism – Son is a good example of this in that he shines both as a focal point and through his creative support – it might be worth entrusting Veliz with increased responsibility next season, instead of initiating an expensive outlay.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Francisco Canepa, an Argentine presenter and commentator for ESPN, has spent much time observing the rise of this exciting ace, saying: “He has that characteristic of a player that’s quite rare. There aren’t many No 9s like that now — a tall, very strong guy that knows how to play in the box. He can run and press. He’s not so good with the ball at his feet, but he’s good at taking defenders into areas they don’t want to go and attacking the empty space. He’s really smart at doing that.”

Stretching defences with his brutish presence can only further the case that he is the perfect Kane heir, consequently allowing teammates such as Son and Richarlison to weave into openings and find the back of the net themselves.

Richarlison for Tottenham.

While Son and Richarlison are the tried and tested goalscorers of Postecoglou's reign, the Spurs skipper will turn 32 during the off-season and Richarlison's track record in front of goal at the club speaks of a rise and fall in form.

Football likes to live in the present but it's important not to forget that Postecoglou is striving to build a sustainable title-chasing outfit, and Veliz could rise to become the spearhead.

He's not a factory-built heir for a player of Kane's distinctive quality, but he has all the trappings of a successful Premier League striker.

No Jackson & "incredible" ace starts in predicted Chelsea lineup v Man City

Chelsea are one of the most entertaining sides to watch in the Premier League this season; if you're neutral, that is.

One week, they might lose 4-1 to Liverpool and 4-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers, only to win at Villa Park and Selhurst Park 3-1 the following week.

Mauricio Pochettino has a talented core of promising youngsters at Stamford Bridge, and while that might be good for the long-term, it has hindered them this season as they currently sit in tenth, with the eighth-best attack and the 13th-best defence.

However, everything can change off the back of a great result, and the Pensioners have the chance to shock the rest of the league this evening as they travel to the Etihad to take on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

If it's anything like the pair's last meeting, fans will be in for a treat, and with a win in the previous game, Pochettino won't look to make more than three personal changes to the XI from Monday.

1 GK – Đorđe Petrović

One of the first names on the teamsheet currently is Serbian goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

The 24-year-old has been the team's number one since Robert Sanchez injured his wrist against Everton just before Christmas.

However, with some reasonably impressive performances between the sticks, he might just keep his place in the team, even with the Spaniard now supposedly back to full fitness.

2 RB – Malo Gusto

Another player in the team due to an injury is French right-back Malo Gusto.

The former Lyon ace was signed in the summer to act as cover for the increasingly injury-prone Reece James, and while he's had some shakey games this season, notably against Wolverhampton Wanderers, he's generally been a solid member of the squad.

He's started six of the last seven Premier League games, so it would be a big shock not to see him in action from the first minute against City.

3 CB – Thiago Silva

Axel Disasi will also almost certainly keep his place in the side, as the Frenchman has been reasonably impressive in the last couple of games.

He certainly hasn't had the smoothest of rides since joining the club in the summer, but considering he has started 92% of league games under Poch, it seems he has the manager's backing.

4 CB – Levi Colwill

ronald-araujo-levi-colwill-liverpool-opinion

The second centre-back spot brings with it the first change in the lineup, as Cobham graduate Levi Colwill comes in for the injured Thiago Silva.

The young Englishman came off the bench in the 61st minute against Palace on Monday night, so he should be fit enough to start at the Etihad.

A pairing of the 20-year-old "Rolls-Royce", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, and Disasi is likely the Blue's best chance of holding the marauding Erling Haaland at bay this evening.

5 LB – Ben Chilwell

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

With Colwill playing in his natural position of centre-back, Pochettino will almost certainly start Ben Chilwell at left-back.

Since recovering from his hamstring injury, the England international has started the previous three Premier League games, and while he certainly hasn't been at his best, he is Chelsea's best left-back.

6 DM – Moises Caicedo

Moises Caicedo

The first midfielder in this XI is the £115m man himself, Moises Caicedo.

It has been a tough first season in west London for the Ecuadorian international, but he has shown glimpses of quality here and there, and while he was underwhelming on Monday night, he'll start this evening.

Poch has started the 22-year-old in 83% of league games this season, and he started for Brighton & Hove Albion last season when they drew with City at the Amex.

7 DM – Enzo Fernández

Starting alongside Caicedo is the man of the moment, Enzo Fernández.

Like his midfield partner, the World Cup winner has not had the easiest of rides since joining the Blues last year, but in recent games, he has stepped up a level.

He bossed Villa off the park in the FA Cup and scored an unreal free-kick, and while he wasn't quite as effective against Palace, he still scored another goal.

8 RM – Cole Palmer

The right-wing brings with it the second change in the lineup as Noni Madueke is benched for Cole Palmer to come in and fill the vacancy.

Madueke failed to deliver against Palace, and it was his mistake that led directly to the opening goal.

On the other hand, Palmer was quite impressive at Selhurst Park – delivering two assists – but considering the quality of the opponent tonight, it makes sense to try to bring him into the action more by starting him slightly deeper.

9 CAM – Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher Chelsea

Keeping his place as the most attacking midfielder in the XI is Conor Gallagher.

The fan-favourite has been reasonably impressive for most of the season and has finally added goals to his game with a strike against Aston Villa in the FA Cup and another couple against Palace on Monday.

The Englishman has started 96% of league games this season, so it's a sure bet he'll start this evening.

10 LM – Raheem Sterling

The third change to the team comes out on the left as Nicolas Jackson makes way for the experienced Raheem Sterling.

Jackson was impressive against Villa last week but was rather underwhelming against Palace on Monday – making just 26 touches – and with chances likely to be in short supply this evening, it makes sense to drop him to the bench.

Moreover, the "incredible" Sterling, as dubbed by former manager Guardiola, was unreal in the last game against City.

He scored Chelsea's second goal of the game and was given a 9/10 for his performance by the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella.

Leeds close in on signing "electric" Dan James upgrade

Leeds United just about did enough to overcome Preston North End in Championship action on Sunday afternoon, a late Joel Piroe penalty the decisive goal in the game that saw the Whites' relentless drive to not settle for a draw pay off.

Spraying David Cornell's goal with 20 efforts on the day, Daniel Farke cut a relieved figure at full-time that his determined Leeds side continued their top form at Elland Road by picking up a last-gasp 2-1 victory.

Farke will hope Leeds can cruise to more straightforward victories this month away from this slight scare versus the Lilywhites, with this potential recruit enhancing the Whites going forward significantly.

Leeds close to signing former Championship star

A report from Football Insider in the last few days has indicated that Leeds are in 'very advanced talks' to land Burnley winger Manuel Benson on loan until the end of the season, beating fellow promotion rivals Southampton to his signature if all goes smoothly.

Russell Martin's Saints, who currently occupy second spot in the Championship on goal difference, could lose out on a deal for the Belgian attacker despite originally having an offer accepted, according to Football Insider.

Starring in the second tier last season for Vincent Kompany's Clarets on the way to a Championship title, Leeds will want to add Benson to their ranks to give the West Yorkshire titans a talent who knows how to get out of the division.

Moreover, with Benson's audacious trickery on the ball and ability to thunderously hit a shot two standouts from his attacking arsenal, the wantaway forward could well displace Dan James on his arrival to Elland Road and complement Georginio Rutter's equally skilful approach.

How Benson would fit into the Leeds team

Despite scoring the equalising goal last time out against Ryan Lowe's tricky visitors, James could well find his starting spot for the Whites up for grabs if a deal can be reached for Benson.

Benson blows his counterpart out of the water when comparing the two slick wingers on FBRef, the Clarets star bettering James in the aspects you want your full-throttle winger option to exceed in.

The current Burnley man trumps the former Manchester United midfielder when it comes to shot-creating actions per 90 minutes over the last year, the 26-year-old Clarets winger coming in at a superior 5.64 to James' lesser 3.46.

Leeds forward Dan James.

Moreover, Benson stands out when it comes to progressive passes received and progressive carries with an astounding 15.75 passes received and 10.50 successful carries contrasted with James' 11.51 and 4.79 respectively.

The fringe Belgian attacker at Turf Moor almost feels readymade to slot into the Whites XI, perfect for the attacking football Farke insists his team play.

Manuel Benson for Burnley.

Rutter could well have a field day alongside his new teammate if Benson joins, the once scapegoated Frenchman a revelation in West Yorkshire this campaign – the 21-year-old now just one assist away from reaching double figures for the season and would relish the idea of playing alongside yet another "electric" attacker – as he was described by EFL pundit Sam Parkin.

Once a star man at Turf Moor before finding himself on the fringes this campaign – helping himself to 15 goal contributions last season in the second tier – Benson could take Leeds to the next level if all progresses without a hitch this transfer window.

Unfortunately, Benson coming in could signal the end of James in the Whites first team as Farke aims to assemble the strongest starting lineup capable of going toe-to-toe still with the top two in the Championship.

Manchester City may have underwhelmed in Europe, with the defending champions bowing out in the quarter-finals, but Rodri's level never dropped after a Man of the Match-winning display against Red Star Belgrade on matchday one.

The classy Spaniard was involved in three goals in total from his position in front of the back four and, despite going out in the last eight, still occupies second spot in the midfielder rankings for passes completed – which tells you everything you need to know about his influence over Pep Guardiola's side.

David Raum remains criminally underrated despite being one of the best attacking left-backs in world football. The Germany international is an excellent outlet for RB Leipzig, always willing to get forward and cause havoc with his deadly deliveries into the area (only Joshua Kimmich managed more successful crosses across the entire competition).

Raum, who was Man of the Match in the group-stage win over Red Star Belgrade, racked up three assists in total, including one beauty for Willi Orban during a fantastic showing in the last-16 clash with Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu.

It was clear even before Ilkay Gundogan left Manchester City for Barcelona that he was still operating at an incredibly high level, and he showed no signs of slowing down in this season's Champions League.

The German was easily the best player in a Barcelona side that surprisingly made its way to the quarter-finals, with Gundogan ranking joint-second for assists, joint-fifth for chances created and joint-fourth for successful crosses. At 33, he remains an impressively penetrative player and boasts a winning mentality that many of his younger team-mates will learn an awful lot from.

Getty18Phil Foden (Manchester City)

The Premier League's Player of the Season wasn't quite as decisive in the Champions League, as seven of Phil Foden's eight direct goal contributions came against weak opposition in the group stage and last 16, but the England attacking midfielder was on target in Manchester City's thrilling 3-3 draw with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

A tremendous talent from a technical perspective, Foden also impressed with his link-up play, with no player managing more successful lay-offs (25).
