Stacy-Ann King, Chedean Nation offer some resistance, but hosts prove too strong
The Report by Valkerie Baynes21-Jun-2019 An excellent knock by Danielle Wyatt propelled England to a convincing 42-run victory in the second T20I against West Indies at Northampton. The victory gives the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series after the opening match, also in Northampton, was washed out on Tuesday and marks their 14th win in a row across all formats.England, who were scarcely challenged in sweeping their three-match ODI series against West Indies, didn’t have things all their own way in this match, however. A defiant 43 off 34 balls by Stacy-Ann King, combined with a glittering cameo from Chedean Nation, who scored 32 off 20, put the England bowlers under some pressure for a while. But they responded well to claim key wickets at the right time, assisted by some sharp fielding and, in particular, typically excellent glove work by wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor. The same could not be said for West Indies’ fielding. Described after the first ODI by captain Stafanie Taylor as “atrocious”, the fielding which had improved somewhat in the two matches that followed, reverted in this match with a rash of errors resulting in missed opportunities. But it was Wyatt’s brilliant 81 off 55 balls that set England on their way to 180 for 6, their highest T20I score against West Indies. Opening alongside Amy Jones while Tammy Beuamont dropped to No. 3, Wyatt’s 10 fours were beautifully struck. She dug in as Jones fell for 37 – which included four fours and a big six – when Chinelle Henry made up for dropping Wyatt at extra cover by enticing Jones to drag on.Beaumont was out for just two when Afy Fletcher came into the attack with immediate effect, her fuller ball tempting Beaumont to try pushing it down the ground only to send it back to the bowler, who took a sharp catch low to her left on her follow-through.Nat Sciver contributed 31 off 18 deliveries before she was bowled by Hayley Matthews, who also accounted for Wyatt eventually. Wyatt, who had just lofted Shamilia Connell through long-on for four, edged the next ball from Connell to Matthews at backward point.”Rob [England coach Mark Robinson] said, ‘go out and express yourself,’ and I did,” Wyatt told Sky Sports. “That’s my job to go out and try and get the team off to a good total. Amy Jones has done really well, Tammy Beaumont, so there’s competition for places at the minute, so everyone’s got to perform.”Katherine Brunt came in up the order but didn’t last long and Heather Knight reached 22 off 11 before she was run out by some tidy work from Karishma Ramharack. The England captain felt some pain in her hamstring following her innings which prevented her from fielding and meant Anya Shrubsole took on the skipper’s duties. The move was later described as precautionary while the extent of the problem was being assessed.West Indies began their chase poorly, stumbling to 19 for 2. They were 58 for 3 when Stafanie Taylor, who had survived an earlier run out chance, tried to run on an overthrow and was caught out of her ground as Brunt threw in to Sarah Taylor.King stood firm, however, assisted by Nation, who hit Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone for sixes, the former travelling some 75 metres down the ground. King was dropped on 41 by Jones but only added two more runs before she skied Linsey Smith to deep square leg, where Wyatt was loitering just inside the boundary to swallow the catch. When Nation was run out by Fran Wilson gathering well at mid-wicket and sending the ball back to Smith at the bowler’s end, West Indies looked in trouble again and a sharp stumping by Sarah Taylor to remove Henry all but put the result beyond doubt. Smith and Brunt claimed two wickets each. The final match will be played in Derby on Tuesday.

The 2019 IPL will begin with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 23.The schedule for the first two weeks of the tournament was made public on Tuesday, listing out the first 17 matches, which will take place over two weeks. In this period, six of the teams will feature in four games apiece, with Bangalore and Delhi Capitals playing five of their league fixtures, and all teams will have two home fixtures, with only Delhi hosting three games.Like it was in 2018, the IPL has stuck to keeping the double headers limited to the weekends, with three announced in the first two weeks’ schedule. Incidentally, the start times for the afternoon and evening matches were not listed in the schedule. The announcement from the IPL’s governing body, though, came with a caveat: the dates are subject to changes, because the 2019 general elections across India are scheduled around the same time period.”Once the election dates are released we will address any issues with the first two weeks and also prepare a schedule for the remainder of the season working with the local authorities around the polling dates,” a statement on the IPL website said.
Journalist Malik Ouzia has shared a potential transfer twist out of West Ham as the east Londoners could well green-light a January exit.
West Ham players who could leave in 2024
As things stand, West Ham have an array of players facing the exit door on a free next summer, with manager David Moyes also looking likely to join them as things stand. Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, defender Ben Johnson, Divin Mubama, Conor Coventry, Joseph Anang, Aaron Cresswell, Angelo Ogbonna and midfielder Tomas Soucek all have contracts which expire at the end of the Premier League season. (spotrac)
Michail Antonio, Vladimir Coufal and Pablo Fornals were all in similar positions until recently, with West Ham opting to trigger one-year extension clauses in all of their deals. Youngster Mubama, who has come off the pitch to contribute recently in Antonio's injury absence, is actually at the centre of new contract talks but no announcement has been made yet on fresh terms.
West Ham striker Divin Mubama.
"West Ham started the talks with Mubuma and his team 12 months ago," said club insider ExWHUemployee on Mubama recently.
"The club absolutely want him to stay, but as we know, we do adopt a very strict wage structure policy. It must be said though that Declan Rice played many many games for the club on a youth wage, earning his right to then seek higher wages later in his career – something I think gets forgotten.
"Now I have been told that the offer on the table is ‘amazing’, although this is from the clubs side. Now clearly the Mubama camp doesn’t feel that way, otherwise it would have been signed."
Meanwhile, Soucek is another peculiar case as the Czech Republic international has often thrived in a more advanced role under Moyes this season – so West Ham may not want to lose him on a free.
Fornals' extension had many believing the Spaniard was one set to stay for the foreseeable, but according to Ouzia, sharing a transfer twist on the matter, that may not be the case.
West Ham could green-light Fornals exit despite extension
According to the journalist, writing in a piece for The Evening Standard, West Ham are open to offers for Fornals in January and could well green-light an exit if the right bid comes in.
Moyes' side and technical director Tim Steidten are keen to bring in a new forward next month, but financial complications mean West Ham may need to sell.
West Ham United midfielder Pablo Fornals.
FFP regulations loom over the east Londoners, and to avoid an Everton-like scenario, West Ham must comply and not go over budget. Fornals' extension means they're in a position to demand more money from interested clubs, as there is no longer a risk of losing the midfielder on a free deal next summer.

The Spaniard has made nine appearances for West Ham this season, with most of them coming from the bench, but he's apparently "popular" at the club. Moyes has also praised Fornals as an "energetic" team player in recent years.
Manchester City are now in formalised talks to let go of one of their first-team men on a mandatory loan-to-buy deal once the January transfer window opens, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Manchester City seek Club World Cup glory…
Despite coming under pressure in the Premier League over recent weeks, Pep Guardiola's men will now concern themselves with the challenge of trying to become Club World Cup champions out in Jeddah as they prepare to face Japanese giants Urawa Reds on Tuesday.
As per The Manchester Evening News, the Citizens have elected to take six youngsters out to the Middle East as they aim to bring home the trophy for the first time in their history, including Justin Oboavwoduo, Joel Ndala, Jacob Wright, Max Alleyne, Mahamadou Susoho and Micah Hamilton.
Man City plotting move for "passing master" to replace Kalvin Phillips
The former Leeds star has not had the desired impact at the Etihad.

Fluminense and Al Ahly will compete in the other semi-final for a place in the showpiece occasion to decide the winner on Friday evening; however, the Sky Blues will also have an eye in the background on the transfer window in light of their inconsistent domestic form. Midfield has been identified as an area where potential movement could occur come the New Year and Fulham enforcer Joao Palhinha has reportedly become a target, with a £50 million swoop said to be in the pipeline for the Portugal international.
Both Chelsea and Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, who came close in the summer window to completing a £65 million move to Bayern Munich; nevertheless, both Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino are now reluctant to add more bodies to their respective engine rooms.
Now, one man could also be set to head out of the door at the Etihad Stadium once the market opens again for activity at the beginning of 2024.
Juventus enter Kalvin Phillips talks – Fabrizio Romano
According to transfer insider Romano, Juventus have entered talks with Manchester City over a deal for England international Kalvin Phillips, with the Serie A giants keen to propose a loan agreement with an option to buy; however, the Citizens are keen to make his exit a "mandatory" feature of negotiations.
Of course, the 28-year-old, who has previously been labelled a "Rolls Royce" by journalist Josh Bunting, has been a peripheral figure for Manchester City this term, registering a solitary goal in nine appearances across all competitions (Phillips statistics – Transfermarkt).

Undoubtedly, Phillips has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium for a long time and he could now have the chance to revive his career elsewhere following a disappointing spell in the North West.

Juventus now could well be the perfect platform for the ex-Leeds United star to ensure he is involved in Gareth Southgate's plans next summer in Germany at EURO 2024.
Shane Warne was unimpressed by the new buzzwords and catch phrases in Australian cricket, saying it was “verbal diarrhoea” and that “it makes you vomit,” as the administration and team attempt to recover from the fallout of the ball-tampering scandal at Newlands in March.”Can I cut to the chase here? They need to find the best captain, find who’s going to be the best captain for each form of the game and say ‘guys, run with me’,” Warne said while commentating for during the first ODI against South Africa in Perth, where Australia suffered a heavy defeat. “Forget all the words, forget all the verbal diarrhoea and all that sort of stuff. That’s all rubbish, seriously, it makes you vomit.”Warne’s comments, which won’t come as a huge surprise, came after a week of tumult in Australian cricket, following the release of a team and culture review. A 38-word Player Pact was unveiled, and on the eve of the Perth ODI, photos revealed words such as “patience”, “pressure” and “elite honesty” emblazoned in the Australian dressing room. “Elite honesty,” in particular, came under a lot of scrutiny on social media.”You can write your 200-page document, you can have sports science and high performance and all that other ridiculous stuff,” Warne said. “I think some of the stuff they’re worrying about is trying to look like they’re doing the right thing. You can’t forget what Australians are, their DNA, and that is hard, aggressive, positive cricket and then play fairly.”At the end of the day you’ve got to play cricket, it’s a simple game and it’s a performance-based game. You’ve got to perform on the field. All these words and everything, it’s all about actions and I think it’s all about basics. The captain and vice-captain lead the way and the rest come after you. You inspire, inspire from within with your performances and the way you perform on the field.”None of this writing words, 200-page documents, just get out and play better.”
The two quicks picked up three wickets each before fifties from Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen steered South Africa home
The Report by Liam Brickhill06-Oct-2018AFP
Reeza Hendricks added to his debut hundred with an assured 66 and Heinrich Klaasen registered his maiden ODI fifty as South Africa chased down Zimbabwe’s 228 with four overs to spare in Paarl. On the best pitch so far seen in the series, South Africa’s frontline bowlers shared the spoils to bowl Zimbabwe out three balls short of a full innings. An inexperienced batting line-up then put in their best performance of the series as South Africa strolled to a four-wicket win.Dale Steyn’s successful return to ODI cricket continued and he led the charge with 3 for 29 in the afternoon, once again bowling with menacing pace. South Africa’s opening pair of Hendricks and Aiden Markram then shared in an opening stand of 75, setting the platform for Klaasen’s 59 and the unbeaten 25 from Khaya Zondo that guided South Africa to a 3-0 series victory. While Klaasen marshalled the latter end of South Africa’s chase, Hendricks and Markram were in complete control throughout the Powerplay, aided by erratic lines from Zimbabwe with the new ball. Tendai Chatara fed Markram’s whips through the leg side and then overcorrected on the off to leak five boundaries in his first two overs.Hamilton Masakadza cycled through his seamers and then turned to his spinners as early as the eighth over. But on a benign pitch the visiting attack lost their bite. There was accuracy, but not deception from Sean Williams and Brandon Mavuta tried to do a little too much with his variations of legspin, losing control of his length. Hendricks swatted boundaries whenever the young legspinner erred, while Markram skipped out to hit Williams twice down the ground before he was unluckily given out lbw for 42 – there is no DRS in this series, and Umpire Chris Gaffaney missed an inside edge.Faf du Plessis, returning to action after recovering from the shoulder injury he picked up in the field against Sri Lanka in August, eased himself in with a couple of confident strokes off the front foot but then picked out Craig Ervine at midwicket, pulling at a Mavuta half-tracker.The dismissal of the South African captain in the 20th over allowed Zimbabwe to build a little pressure in the field, and they might have had an opening when Hendricks was trapped in front of his stumps by Donald Tiripano for 66. Klaasen made sure they didn’t. Playing the pull with particular power, he raced to fifty from 59 balls and added 66 with Zondo to put South Africa within a couple of shots of victory.Klaasen laced two of fours off Kyle Jarvis, but fell attempting a third. Phehlukwayo then fell for a nine-ball duck as Zimbabwe delayed the inevitable, only for Steyn to arrive at the crease and thump the third ball he faced down the ground to end the match. On a pitch not dissimilar from those South Africa might expect to find at the World Cup in England next year, the hosts had finally flexed their batting bench strength a little. They also got the chance to try out an exciting combination with the ball, with Steyn and Imran Tahir sharing the new ball duties. While there was very little turn for Tahir, his variations of wrist and pace kept the Zimbabwean openers guessing, and soon did for Solomon Mire. When Craig Ervine feathered his third ball, from Steyn, through to Klaasen and Rabada set Masakadza up with a reverse three-card trick that went yorker, yorker, bouncer Zimbabwe were once again three down in close proximity to the Powerplay. Another low total loomed, but Williams and Taylor went on the counterattack in style. They added 73 for the fourth wicket, Taylor reaching a significant milestone in the process as he became the third Zimbabwean to reach 6,000 runs in ODIs, after the Flower brothers. Some brilliantly sharp keeping from Klaasen had Taylor stumped for 40, but Williams continued to attack and raced past his previous best of 55 against South Africa. He eventually played too early to be caught and bowled by Rabada for 69, and with Peter Moor and Elton Chigumbura falling cheaply it was left to Donald Tiripano and Mavuta to boost the score beyond 200. Zimbabwe didn’t have quite enough left in the tank to bat through their innings, Tiripano falling for 29 in the pursuit of quick runs with three balls to go. They did at least offer South Africa a reasonable target to chase under lights, and the hosts’ top order responded with their most compelling performance of a 3-0 whitewash.

Advice from one India legend to another, in the wake of a masterful performance at Edgbaston that ultimately fell short
Andrew Miller07-Aug-2018Virat Kohli has been urged by Sachin Tendulkar to keep his focus and let his “heart guide the way”, after his brilliant batting display in last week’s first Test fell short of delivering an Indian victory at Edgbaston. In a match in which no other Indian player reached a half-century, Kohli made a brilliant 149 in the first innings, before leading his team’s push towards their victory target of 194 with a further 51 in the second. However, his dismissal on the fourth and final morning proved to be the defining moment of the match, and in the wake of India’s 31-run defeat, Kohli came under fire in the media – most notably from the former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, for failing to recognise that his lesser team-mates needed more practice than he did.Nevertheless, Kohli’s efforts at Edgbaston lifted him above Steve Smith to the top of the ICC Test batting rankings. It was the first time in his career that he had attained the No. 1 ranking, and the first time that any Indian batsman had achieved the feat since Tendulkar himself in 2011.”I would say, just continue, he’s doing a fantastic job so just continue,” Tendulkar told ESPNcricinfo. “Don’t worry about what’s happening around you, keep your focus on what you want to achieve, and let your heart guide the way.”Along the way there will be plenty of things said and done, but eventually, if you are passionate about what you want in life, then the results will invariably follow.”Speaking at the launch of the Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy in North London, Tendulkar acknowledged that – in spite of the disappointment of the final result – Kohli deserved to be immensely proud of his personal achievement at Edgbaston, in particular the manner in which he atoned for his disappointing maiden tour of England in 2014 with a century at the first opportunity. However, he also warned that there could be no resting on any laurels for Kohli, now that he has scored that maiden Test hundred in England, one of the clear goals of his career.”I can tell you from my own experience, however many runs you score they are never enough,” Tendulkar said. “You want more runs, and that is the case with Virat. However many runs he scores, it will never be enough for him.”The downfall starts when you are satisfied. It’s nice to be happy, but never be satisfied when you are a batsman. Bowlers can only get ten wickets, but batters can go on and on, so don’t be satisfied, just be happy.”The circumstances of Kohli’s maiden century in England were far removed from those of Tendulkar’s, way back in 1990, when as a 17-year-old, he scored his first Test hundred against any opponent to save the second Test at Old Trafford and win the Man-of-the-Match award.”Until then I hadn’t attended a press conference, so everyone in the dressing room was saying they are going to grill you!” he recalled. “I was most scared, but it wasn’t that bad, everyone was very friendly. But there was one question, ‘will you open the bottle of champagne?’, and I was only 17, so I said no way, I’m not going to do that now!”There will be no-one quite as young as Tendulkar was back then when England and India reconvene at Lord’s this week for the second Test. However, with the 20-year-old Sam Curran producing a matchwinning allround performance at Edgbaston, and Surrey’s Ollie Pope in line for his Test debut at the same age this week, the question of when to blood young players is once again a hot topic.Tendulkar, however, is unequivocal. “If somebody is good enough, they should play for their country, it’s as simple as that,” he said. “Age shouldn’t be a criteria.”When I played my first game [against Pakistan in 1989-90], I was only 16, and in a way it helped,” he added. “I didn’t know what it was like to face Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Abdul Qadir, possibly the best bowling attack in the world.”You are fearless, you only see one side of the coin. With experience and maturity you start to see the other side of the coin as well, and you learn to balance things out.”That is the age when you only go out and give your best, and that is what I would ask both these guys to go out and do. Enjoy the game because there will be tough moments, but that is what you practice for, that is what you live for.”
