Naismith Could Get Hearts’ "Very Good Fit" Firing Next Season

Heart of Midlothian mainly relied on Lawrence Shankland and Josh Ginnelly for goals during the 2022/23 season, as the duo scored 41 goals between them and with the English winger departing the club this summer, it will be up to the other players to step up.

Steven Naismith certainly has a challenge on his hands in terms of improving on their fourth-place finish in the Premiership last term, especially considering they have made only one signing with a couple of weeks to go until the first league fixture.

Who have Hearts signed?

Michael McGovern has made the move North of the border from Norwich City on a free transfer, but at 39-years-old, he is hardly a signing which will excite the supporters.

The Tynecastle side are also close to securing a move for Australian midfielder Calem Nieuwenhof, who could be their first outfield signing of the transfer window, while defender Frankie Kent is also being linked with a move to Scotland.

Naismith will still have to bolster his attacking options however while also reviving players such as Barrie McKay and Alan Forrest in order to give them that extra edge in the attacking third next season.

How many goals has Alan Forrest scored for Hearts?

The next highest scorers for Hearts after Shankland and Ginnelly were Forest (five) and McKay (four), which is quite the drop from the 28 and 13 goals the former two netted across the entirety of last season.

McKay has proven to be an excellent attacking option for the club during his two years in Edinburgh, already notching up 25 goal contributions – six goals and 19 assists – and if he could just up his scoring rate slightly, Hearts could find themselves in a far better position during 2023/24.

Forrest only arrived at the Jambos last summer, signing from Livingston and was praised by journalist Craig Fowler, who said:

“I’m a little skeptical as to whether he can step up and be more consistent than the likes of Gino or GMS, but in terms of squad building he’s a very good fit.”

Having shone for Livi and Ayr United previously, scoring 18 and 55 goals respectively, there were hopes that he could have a similar impact at Hearts.

The 26-year-old played in 47 games for the club as they secured qualification to the Europa Conference League group stages, yet his tally of just five goals is underwhelming considering his talents.

Despite starting just 16 Premiership matches, Forrest did rank fourth across the squad for goals (four) while also ranking in the top ten for shots per game (one) and successful dribbles per game (0.5), suggesting that although he didn’t get as many opportunities as anticipated, he still contributed well enough.

He has demonstrated that if he plays higher up the pitch, goals will arrive sooner rather than later and ahead of next season, Naismith should deploy him as a left-winger as opposed to a slightly deeper role and this could get him firing while also taking the pressure off of Shankland in the process.

Mire's maiden ton scripts record chase

Solomon Mire’s belligerent 112 and half-centuries from Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza helped Zimbabwe run down Sri Lanka’s 316 and register the highest successful chase by any team in the country

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando30-Jun-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSolomon Mire and Sean Williams razed Sri Lanka with a third-wicket partnership of 161•AFPA belligerent 112 from Solomon Mire set Zimbabwe on track, Sean Williams’ 65 provided stability, and Sikandar Raza’s sparkling 67 not out laid out the finishing touches as a fearless Zimbabwe ran down Sri Lanka’s score of 316 to make history in Galle. Not only was this Zimbabwe’s first ODI victory against Sri Lanka on the island, it was also the first time any team successfully pursued a score in excess of 300. In the end, the chase seemed virtually nerveless. Raza and Malcolm Waller accelerated through the final overs to reach the target with the only six of the innings, with 14 balls to spare and six wickets in hand.Nothing Sri Lanka tried in the back half of the innings worked. Angelo Mathews tried switching his bowlers haphazardly, bringing his wicket-takers back early, and bowled seven men in the innings, but none could shake Zimbabwe’s resolve. As ever, dropped catches will haunt Sri Lanka. Mire was dropped on 17 and 94 – the first of those a difficult opportunity to the wicketkeeper, but the second a straightforward chance to Lasith Malinga, who made a mess of an overhead catch from short fine leg. Williams was also dropped on 13 by Danushka Gunathilaka at point. Had that chance been taken, Williams and Mire would only have had 37 together. Instead, their third-wicket stand of 161 off 133 balls would form the spine of Zimbabwe’s rousing victory.Perhaps you could argue that Sri Lanka should have scored more than 78 in the last 10 overs, given the number of wickets they had in hand, but that is a minor quibble. With Kusal Mendis hitting 86, Gunathilaka joining him for a century stand, and Upul Tharanga making 79 not out, the batsmen largely did their part.Zimbabwe’s innings began inauspiciously, Hamilton Masakadza gloving a legside Malinga ball to the wicketkeeper, before Craig Ervine top-edged a sweep off Akila Dananjaya to deep square leg just after the first Powerplay had finished. With the score at 46 for 2 in the 11th over, 317 looked distant indeed. But in that same over, Mire hit successive boundaries, and followed those up with a reverse sweep for four soon after.Suddenly, batting began to appear much easier. Mire and Williams rotated the strike fluently, and Sri Lanka’s two inexperienced spinners were perhaps guilty of a little indiscipline – Aponso particularly expensive through those early overs. Dananjaya at least seemed to draw regular mistakes from the batsmen, and perhaps could have been used more intensively when Sri Lanka were searching for wickets. By the time he was brought back, the match had largely slipped. It was the legside Mire preferred by far – 87 of his runs coming there. He was ruthless on anything that strayed into his pads, but fetched plenty of balls from wide outside offstump as well. Williams strove largely to turn the strike over. Between overs 15 and 30, the pair added 108 runs, and that, effectively, is where the match was won.Although both batsmen were gone by the end of the 35th over – Mire having completed his maiden ton in the 31st – Raza had the time to work himself into the innings, before he heralded his charge with three boundaries off Asela Gunaratne in the 39th over.Kusal Mendis became the joint second-fastest Sri Lankan to 1000 ODI runs•AFPWhat was probably most impressive about the 102-run stand that took Zimbabwe home was how toothless they made Sri Lanka’s bowlers seem. Malinga’s slower balls were expertly parsed, and his swinging yorkers were not merely defused; some were heavily scored off. The spinners were manipulated and picked off, and even Nuwan Pradeep – who was Sri Lanka’s best bowler in the Champions Trophy – began to err towards the death. Zimbabwe, in playing intelligent, percentage cricket, took the game firmly by the collar, and Sri Lanka wilted quickly under pressure. For much of the chase, Zimbabwe needed about a run a ball, but when Waller hit three fours in the 43rd over, bowled by Aponso, he brought the equation down to 33 off 42 deliveries, and it was always going to be a cakewalk from there. Raza completed his half century in the 45th over, and wound up hitting the winning blow over long-on.It had seemed inconceivable that this total would be mowed down with so many balls to spare when Sri Lanka’s batsmen had walked off the field. Their innings was founded on a flowing 117-run second-wicket stand between Mendis and Gunathilaka – Mendis nearly flawless until his leading edge was sharply snaffled by Graeme Cremer in the 32nd over. The two had negotiated Zimbabwe’s coterie of spinners on a track that afforded some slow turn, and had seen out the moving new ball. Gunathilaka drove effortlessly, while Mendis swept and pulled disdainfully. Crossing 28 with an especially ravishing shot through midwicket, Mendis became the joint second-fastest Sri Lankan batsman to 1000 runs, one innings slower than Roy Dias, who had achieved the milestone in 27.Later in the innings, Tharanga would cross 6000 career ODI runs as well, batting from the No. 4 position after ceding his opening spot to Gunathilaka. Mathews cracked 43 off 30, and Gunaratne made a spry 28, but they were all let down by the bowling and fielding effort. On the bowling front for Zimbabwe, seamer Tendai Chatara returned the best figures of the innings – and indeed the game – claiming a wicket at either end of the innings, and going at only 5.44 an over.

Everton: "Two issues" arise after Moshiri and Kenwright "agreement"

One reason Everton chairman Bill Kenwright may have survived the exodus of the clubs board of directors is that owner Farhad Moshiri cannot afford to buy the club shares off of the chairman, Paul Brown exclusively told FootballFanCast.

Kenwright first joined the Toffees as a director in 1989 and owns 1.3% of the Merseyside outfit.

What is the latest between Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright?

Everton recently announced the departures of a number of directors and their replacements, in a move that has been brewing for a long time in response to the numerous fan protests throughout the season regarding their mismanagement of the club.

It was expected that Kenwright would be stepping down from his role at the same time as the three other departures, however, following talks with Moshiri, the 77-year-old was convinced to stay on in order to help the club through the "transitional period" they are undergoing.

The news was met with anger and disappointment by many Everton fan groups, who have been calling for the removal of "the most unsuccessful chairman in our history" since January 2023. The #AllTogetherNow group released a statement, stating: “We call for the immediate removal of the chairman of this football club – who has been the most unsuccessful chairman in our history. For the football club to move forward, and fans to unite, this without doubt has to happen.

everton-protests-farhad-moshiri-transfer-michael-keane

The protests will not cease and will only further intensify if you [Moshiri] allow ‘Chairman Bill’ to stumble on, continuing to fail in his position, despite clear evidence for a need for change. We ask you to respond without delay to this loyal fanbase, do not cause any further unnecessary hold up to a deadline that the football club’s leadership team set out.”

However, Paul Brown has revealed that there may be another reason behind why Kenwright was kept in his role at the club.

What has Paul Brown said regarding the Everton board situation?

Speaking to FootballFanCast, Brown revealed that Moshiri isn't currently in a positon to go through with the deal he has agreed with Kenwright to buy the chairmans shares.

The journalist said: "The problem is this agreement that the pair have for Moshiri to buy Kenwright's shares. There are two issues there. I don't think Moshiri is currently in a position to be increasing his own shareholding at Everton and I think he may not quite simply have the cash to do that the cash available to do that."

How can Moshiri solve this problem?

Kenwright's continued presence in the club and the confusion it has brought could be what is delaying the proposed investment into the club by American-based MSP Sports Capital.

Moshiri has been searching for new investors to help finance the club's new stadium which is currently being built at Bramley-Moore Dock, and MSP are willing to do that. In return, the froup will receive a number of seats on Everton's new-look board of directors.

One solution could be MSP Sports Capital purchases Kenwright's shares directly, however, it is unknown whether the deal that has been agreed between himself and Moshiri will be the same deal offered to the American group.

Another solution is that Everton removes Kenwright from his position on the board whilst he keeps his shares at the club. That would appease the disgruntled fanbase, but it is unknown whether that puts the potential investment deal in jeopardy.

Whatever the plan is, the club and Moshiri have to sort it out fast, as there is a lot of work to do if the Toffees want to avoid another season like last.

M Vijay set to return from shoulder injury

India batsman M Vijay has been named in Tamil Nadu’s squad for their remaining matches in the south zone leg of the inter-state T20 tournament. This will mark Vijay’s return to competitive cricket after spending more than a month on the sidelines with a shoulder injury he sustained during India’s final Test against England in Chennai. His first match is expected to be against Goa at the IC-Guru Nanak College ground in Chennai on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu have one win and a loss in their two outings so far.Vijay, 32, replaced Dinesh Karthik, who will miss the rest of the tournament to attend his sister-in-law’s wedding. Tamil Nadu chairman of selectors S Sharath confirmed Vijay’s availability for the remaining matches.Vijay injured his shoulder while fielding in the fifth and final Test against England, and didn’t open the batting. He eventually came out to bat at No. 6 and made 29. On the third day of the Test, Vijay, along with R Ashwin, was included in Tamil Nadu’s squad for their Ranji Trophy quarter-final clash against Karnataka, but were subsequently withdrawn three days later. While Ashwin suffered from sports hernia, Vijay was deemed to not have recovered completely.Meanwhile, Karthik didn’t keep wicket during Tamil Nadu’s 72-run loss to Hyderabad on Monday and N Jagadeesan stood behind the stumps in his stead. “Yesterday Karthik had a collision with [Baba] Aparajith while taking a run [against Karnataka],” Tamil Nadu coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar told ESPNcricinfo. “He had a bit of a trouble in crouching and moving, so that’s the reason why he didn’t keep wicket.”After the Goa game, Tamil Nadu have a one-day break before they take on Andhra (February 2) and Kerala (February 3).

Nottingham Forest Could Replace Lingard With £11m Real Deal

Nottingham Forest will be looking for a much more settled campaign in the Premier League next season and making sure the recruitment is spot on this summer will be essential for improving.

The Garibaldi Reds finished 16th in the top-flight table with four points to spare following a difficult relegation scrap and Steve Cooper will be delighted with the fight his team put up at the business end to retain their status in the top division for another season.

Having said that, there is still plenty of work to be done at the City Ground to establish and cement themselves as a consistent Premier League team who can comfortably compete, so identifying new additions who can make a genuine impact will be essential to improve performances.

Forest confirmed their retained and released list earlier this month with 12 players departing the club this summer, including former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard following a disappointing season on Trentside.

Lingard failed to live up to high expectations during his stint, with the 30-year-old struggling to make the desired impact; tallying up just 17 league appearances and zero goal contributions.

As a result, replacing Lingard with a more prolific presence in front of goal shouldn't be the most difficult task for the club's hierarchy and one player who could be a real asset next season is recently linked Manchester City academy star Carlos Borges.

ESPN reported last week that Forest have held 'preliminary talks' to sign the youth player this summer, with the Premier League champions valuing him at £11m.

Who is Carlos Borges?

The talented teenager has been going from strength to strength in the treble-winning club's youth set-up and this season earned the title of Premier League Two Player of the Season due to his incredible output for the U21s.

Over 38 appearances in all competitions, Borges – hailed the "real deal" by journalist Tom Young – scored a whopping 29 goals and registered 18 assists, with a goal contribution every 55 minutes which is an incredible achievement for the youngster who was the outright top-scorer in the entire Premier League Two last season with 21 goals.

Not only that, the Man City left-winger has given glimpses of other key strengths that could make him an incredible asset to Cooper next season – averaging 2.3 shots on target, 1.7 key passes, 2.7 tackles, one successful dribble and 3.7 duels won per game over his three Football League Trophy appearances last term.

The 11-cap Portugal U19 star – dubbed "phenomenal" by Jacek Kulig – now looks to be ready to take the next step into first-team football and Forest could provide him with the opportunity to continue his outstanding development in the forward line at the City Ground next season.

The Tricky Trees have had great success with youthful talent in their forward line as both Brennan Johnson and Morgan Gibbs-White have been a force to be reckoned with in the attacking third – contributing to 26 goals last term – so Cooper could now bolster that energetic presence by deploying Borges alongside the tenacious duo.

With that being said, the signing of Borges would be a no-brainer for Forest this summer and if the young talent could emulate his goal-scoring escapades for Forest he would significantly improve upon Lingard's impact.

Arsenal Will Be Disciplined When Bidding For £60k p/w Target

Arsenal won't pay over the odds for Declan Rice this summer and will instead take a 'disciplined' approach when bidding for the midfielder, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest transfer news involving Declan Rice?

According to The Guardian, Arsenal are 'confident' that they can land Rice this summer and have identified him as a top target to strengthen their midfield.

The report states that the Gunners want to pay around £90 million to seal a deal for the £60k-a-week ace; however, West Ham United are said to want around £100 million for his services amid further interest from Manchester United, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich.

Football Insider claim that Rice has 'verbally agreed personal terms' over a transfer to Arsenal, though both clubs are yet to come to an agreement on a fee for the player.

The 24-year-old is keen to remain in London as he plots his next steps and is enthused by the project that Mikel Arteta has created in north London.

Earlier this week, Rice captained West Ham United to a famous Europa Conference League triumph, lifting only the second European trophy in the Hammers' history after their UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1965, as per Sky Sports.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that Arsenal will be 'disciplined' in their efforts to try and entice Rice to the Emirates Stadium.

Jacobs told FFC: "It's likely that the suitors may have to come in a little bit higher, but I still expect Arsenal's opening offer for Declan Rice to be under £100 million, not over the British transfer record £106 million that Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez. From Arsenal's point of view, what gives them confidence is two things, one I've revealed previously, Rice ideally would like to stay in London and two, he's spoken glowingly about Arsenal and Mikel Arteta. All signs point towards Rice and Arsenal, but the reason why Arsenal want to move quickly is because we know they're going to be disciplined. We know that they're going to not be reckless in what they value Rice at and we saw that with Mykhailo Mudryk."

Would Declan Rice be a good signing for Arsenal?

Rice has risen to prominence in the last few years due to maintaining consistent performance levels at West Ham United and looks certain to leave the London Stadium in search of a new challenge this summer.

In 2022/23, the England international made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers, registering five goals and four assists, as per Transfermarkt.

declan-rice-west-ham-arsenal-transfer-gossip-odegaard-edu-arteta

WhoScored also shows that Rice has been strong in the tackle this campaign, successfully winning an average of 2.1 challenges per match in the Premier League.

As per FBRef, the London-born midfielder has also driven West Ham United forward from the engine room this season, successfully performing 112 shot-creating actions in total.

Arsenal need to be quick to snap up Rice this off-season as interest in his services looks to be expanding due to his distinguishable qualities.

Afghanistan ready to play Tests – ACB chief executive

Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Shafiq Stanikzai has presented an argument in favor of the proposal for two-tier Test cricket, saying the side deserves the opportunity to play Tests through their solid performances in the ICC’s Intercontinental Cup first-class multi-day competition for Associates.”We think that we are ready to play Test cricket and we have proven that,” Stanikzai told ESPNcricinfo in a recent interview. “Since we entered into the Intercontinental Cup arena, we were beaten only once. That was in the [2013] Intercontinental Cup final where we got beaten by Ireland but that’s the only loss we have in a four-day game or multi-day game.”Afghanistan are currently in second place behind Ireland on the 2015-17 Intercontinental Cup table after four rounds, with three wins and a rain-marred draw against Scotland. Afghanistan’s overall record in the first-class competition is outstanding with 14 wins, one loss and four draws. Right from their debut in the competition – a high-scoring draw in which they claimed first-innings points against a Zimbabwe XI in 2009 – they have made an effort to demonstrate their versatility rather than be pigeonholed as a limited-overs specialist outfit.Nowhere was that more evident than in their victory against a then elite Canada outfit in 2010, who at the time were preparing to play their third successive ICC World Cup. Set a target of 494 to win in the fourth innings, Afghanistan recorded the ninth-best successful chase in first-class cricket history spearheaded by Mohammad Shahzad’s unbeaten 214. That win propelled them to a maiden Intercontinental Cup title later that year with a win over Scotland in the final. That victory also broke Ireland’s streak of three successive titles.Overall, Afghanistan have scored 400 or more in an innings six times and batted for more than 100 overs in an innings on 11 occasions in the Intercontinental Cup, showing their versatility. They have also shown adaptability to foreign conditions, notching victories in Scotland, Kenya, Canada, Namibia and twice in the Netherlands.Three of Afghanistan’s last six Intercontinental Cup wins have come by an innings margin, while the other three were by margins of ten wickets, eight wickets and 201 runs. Stanikzai says there is not much more for them to prove against Associate-level competition in multi-day cricket and they are eager for a chance to show their skills in a Test scenario.”We have a real good package for every single format of the game,” he said. “If you have a look at the Afghanistan cricket team, we have almost a different squad for every single format. We have T20 specialists, we have ODI specialists, we have multi-day players, specialists not just in batting but in bowling as well. So we are carrying a different bunch of players in every single format we are playing.”Stanikzai’s point is backed up by the fact that core players from their limited-overs squad – bowlers Hamid Hassan, Shapoor Zadran and Rashid Khan, and batsmen Noor Ali Zadran, Javed Ahmadi, Najibullah Zadran and Gulbadin Naib – were all absent from Afghanistan’s starting XI in their most recent Intercontinental Cup win over Netherlands. Afghanistan also has a domestic four-day competition since 2014, which features teams from five regions, although this has not yet been assigned first-class status.”It means the talent is huge in Afghanistan and things have shaped up quite nicely and we have improved quite rapidly in the cricketing world,” Stanikzai said. “Afghanistan is a team that is ready to play Test cricket. We are just looking forward for this [two-tier] proposal to get passed by the ICC board. My stance and Afghanistan Cricket Board’s stance is quite clear that we need more opportunities.”

Man United Blow As Club Demand £78m Fee For Red Devils Target

Man United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Randal Kolo Muani according to The Mirror, with Eintracht Frankfurt demanding £78m for his services this summer.

What is the latest on Man United signing Kolo Muani?

The Red Devils are eager to sign a striker during the summer, with Erik Ten Hag eyeing some reinforcements in attack during the transfer window. A fresh forward is seen as a "priority" for the club and the boss wants to bring in another addition in that position.

Short of Marcus Rashford, who so far has 16 goals in the Premier League so far this campaign, no other forward has more than four goals during the season. Anthony Martial has that amount, with on-loan attacker Wout Weghorst yet to bag in the top flight for them despite playing in 14 games. Jadon Sancho and Antony have five and four respectively but both are seen more as wingers than typical number nines.

It means that a goalscoring striker is a must for the club this summer – and Kolo Muani has recently emerged as a potential target for United. The player has bagged 13 goals in 28 starts for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga so far this season – more than any other Red Devils forward not named Rashford.

Randal Kolo Muani in action for Eintracht Frankfurt against Stuttgart in the DFB Pokal semi-final.

However, their pursuit of the 24-year-old has taken a blow today with the news from TeamTalk (via The Mirror) that Frankfurt want around 90 million Euros (or £78m) to convince them to part ways with the striker. That would be one of the biggest expenditures in Old Trafford history – something that could deter interest in the player from Erik Ten Hag according to this report.

Should Man United go for Kolo Muani?

The Red Devils are in need of some fresh legs up front, of that there is no question. They have managed only 49 goals in the Premier League so far this season and only Aston Villa in the top ten have a worse record than them, despite the fact they're currently in the top four. If you take away the goalscoring prowess of Rashford then, things would be bleak for the Red Devils and a striker therefore needs to be a priority.

Kolo Muani could certainly change that if he did make the move to Old Trafford. The forward has gone better and better every season of his career, starting out with nine goals for Nantes before hitting 12 for the French side and now 13 in Germany. It shows that the forward is continuing to get better, regardless of club and country, and if he could hit double digits it would be an instant improvement for the club.

In addition, the player's former coaches have praised his ability, with Vincent Santos hailing his "explosiveness" and stating he is a "decisive" player who loves to "dribble" with the ball.

Muani then ticks plenty of boxes for United – especially on the goal front. However, the asking price being asked for begs the question of whether there is a cheaper and better options out there for the Red Devils.
