Dom Bess will be 'more than ready to go' if selected for fourth Test – Jack Leach

Jack Leach and Jeetan Patel have backed Dom Bess to recover from the disappointment of being dropped and play a major role if selected for England’s fourth Test in India as they look to square the series 2-2.Bess took 17 wickets at 22.75 across both of England’s Tests in Sri Lanka and the first Test in Chennai – all three of which England won – but was left out of the side for the second Chennai Test with Moeen Ali preferred, and was again omitted in the third Test at Ahmedabad as England opted for a seam-heavy line-up.England are unlikely to consider either of the back-up spinners in their touring group for the final Test, with Matt Parkinson and Amar Virdi still categorised as ‘reserves’ after Mason Crane flew home before the start of the third Test. As a result, Bess will be in line for a recall if they decide to revert to a side with two frontline spin options, having relied on Joe Root’s part-time offbreaks last week.Related

Patel, who was unveiled as England’s full-time spin-bowling coach on Monday having travelled to Asia in a consultancy role, said that Bess was in “very good spirits” despite his disappointment at missing out on selection.”I think Dom’s pretty good,” Patel said. “I spoke to him yesterday and he’s in a very good state, actually. He knows that this last Test match is a big Test match for England: to go 2-2 in this series, through four Test matches, would be a fantastic effort.”I think he’s in very good spirits. It’s fair to say he was a bit disappointed he wasn’t selected in that third Test that’s just gone, but the feeling was that the pink ball would react differently and it didn’t go the way we thought it would go. We had a plan and it didn’t quite work, so that’s okay.”Leach, Bess’ long-term team-mate at Somerset before their respective breakthroughs for England, said that he had encouraged Bess to view being dropped as an opportunity to learn and get better.”Dom’s worked hard: he’s been working hard in the nets and he’s a great character, and he will see it as a good learning experience,” Leach said. “I’m sure if called upon in this last Test he’ll be more than ready to go.”From my experience, whenever I’ve had a low moment it’s always turned out to be a good thing, I think. It’s all about how you view that low moment: it’s not nice at the time but if you approach cricket in the right way then I think good things can come from it. That’s definitely what we’re talking about and how we’re thinking.”Leach, who has taken twice as many wickets in the series (16 at 26.75) as any other England bowler, said that his performances against some of the world’s best players of spin provided a major boost to his confidence after a year out of the Test side.”This series has given me a lot of confidence in general,” he said. “The guys you are bowling against are world-class batters and playing them in their own backyard I feel it’s a challenging experience. I feel like I’ve stood up to that pretty well and got some good wickets and it is a confidence boost.Jack Leach has dismissed Rohit Sharma four times in the series so far•BCCI

“I don’t think I could really have expected much more of myself than how I’ve done and how I’ve got better through the tour. It has given me a lot of confidence that I can go on and play a lot for England and that I’m going to get better and better.”My belief in myself is more than it has been in the past, and again, doing it out here in India against some top batters has given me lots of confidence. I know I still have lots of hard work to do but I’ve seen how I can come back from disappointment or tough times in games and put in good performances. That’s more pleasing to me than having it all my own way and bowling sides out.”Patel and Leach also talked up Root’s credentials as an offspinner, after his haul of 5 for 8 in the first innings of the third Test. “Nicked a five-for off me, didn’t he?” Leach joked. “He bowled really well and he’s a really good offspin bowler. I think he should definitely think of himself as a genuine option.”Patel added: “If you take two frontline spinners in Leach and Bess, you know you have Root to then break that up. It is on Rooty himself to say ‘I can bowl, I can offer’. I think he has got a huge offering in that line-up, because he gets the ball to arrive differently and at a different pace and he gets it to do different things. In some ways, he is different to the other two.”The one thing that Rooty has is a fantastic mind for cricket. He understands batting techniques, pitches, the flow of the game. And so to be able to use those skills as well as some spin skill that he has – when I say some, he’s still advancing his spin skill as well – coupled with his knowledge of the game… he’s got a lot to offer this group.”

Tom Lammonby backed for Hundred draft selection after breakthrough county season

Retained Trent Rockets captain Lewis Gregory expects “quite a few teams” to take interest in Somerset team-mate

Lewis Gregory has backed his Somerset team-mate Tom Lammonby to be signed in the Hundred draft this month following his breakout season in county cricket last summer.Lammonby, a former England Under-19 captain, struggled in his first season in Somerset’s T20 side in 2019 but flourished in the abbreviated 2020 season when he was handed an unexpected opportunity as an opener in the red-ball side. His three Bob Willis Trophy hundreds – including 116 in the final against Essex and 107 not out against Worcestershire in a must-win group game – impressed those involved in England’s pathway selection, while he maintained a strike rate of 177.94 in the T20 Blast, the third-highest in the competition out of batsmen with more than 100 runs. And Gregory, who has been retained as Trent Rockets’ captain on a contract worth £80,000 (plus a captaincy bonus), suggested that his team-mate was likely to attract attention from teams in the Hundred as a potential long-term pick thanks to his value as a finisher in the middle order and his left-arm medium pace.”I think there will be quite a few teams after him, if I’m honest,” Gregory said. “He’s a brilliant kid, who works his absolute socks off. To see him contribute in the manner that he did last year – in both red-ball and white-ball cricket – was great.”He’s got a very, very high ceiling and he’s going to keep developing and keep growing. He’s got a very bright future and it won’t be long before we’re seeing him in an England shirt, [so] I’ve no doubt that there will be a few teams interested in him.”Gregory, Somerset’s T20 captain, has spent his entire professional career at the club and admitted that he would find it “weird” to miss five weeks of the 2021 county season while playing in the Hundred. Those involved in the new tournament will miss the Royal London One-Day Cup next year, which will instead take on the role of a “development competition” between July and August.”It will be weird, but you get used to playing in franchise competitions and developing as a team quite quickly,” he said. “Naturally I’ll see that Somerset are playing games in the 50-over comp and miss being around, but equally [the Hundred] is a new opportunity to go out and play on the global stage.”That’s an exciting prospect for anyone that’s going to be involved in the competition. I think it will become the norm and something that we’re used to very quickly.”Gregory’s Trent Rockets side are one of three teams – alongside London Spirit and Southern Brave – who will make only two picks at the draft, which will take place between the second and third India vs England Tests later this month. They opted to retain the vast majority of the players they signed at the initial draft in October 2019, including their three overseas signings: Rashid Khan, D’Arcy Short and Nathan Coulter-Nile.Gregory has been a regular contributor for Brisbane Heat in the BBL•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

Gregory said he has been involved in “a few conversations” regarding the Rockets’ strategy but has largely left things to Stephen Fleming and Mick Newell, the side’s head coach and general manager respectively. The two players they released were Harry Gurney – who was offered a new deal but opted to enter the draft instead – and Luke Fletcher, and they appear likely to sign two seamers in the draft as a result.”It was a no-brainer, really,” Gregory said of his decision to stay with the Rockets. “Trent Bridge is a place that I’ve really enjoyed playing cricket, so when the opportunity comes about to call that your home ground, I don’t think you have to think about it too much.”There’s a lot of talent around English cricket at the moment and a lot of good county cricketers are going to miss out. There will be a lot of talent that’s not playing in the Hundred, which shows that the standard of the competition will be one of the strongest across the world.”Related

Gregory was speaking from his hotel room in Canberra, ahead of Brisbane Heat’s fixture against Perth Scorchers on Thursday night, with the winner progressing to the Big Bash final. Having grown used to the competition’s new rules this season, he suggested that the Hundred could look to incorporate the Power Surge – with the powerplay split into two blocks – and a bonus-point system in future years.”I don’t think it will be used initially but [the Power Surge] could easily be brought in. I’d be fine with that, as long as I’m not bowling in it. I’ve [also] enjoyed the Bash Boost point, which brings in a game within a game – you’re not just looking at the final target but also the 10-over score. They’re nice innovations and it’ll be interesting to see how they develop over the next year or so. I can definitely see them being tried and tested around the world.”I think four [powerplay] overs up front is potentially not long enough in a T20. I think you could either have five up front and one over at the back end, or even a five and a two. But it’s created different perspectives on things, and brings a different dynamic. You stay in the game a little bit longer when you’re chasing, knowing that there are two overs to capitalise on with only two men out, and you can make a charge a little bit later.”

8/10 Man Utd “superstar” has now made himself as undroppable as Fernandes

Manchester United finally put an end to their three-game winless streak on Wednesday night, as they defeated Newcastle United 3-2 at Old Trafford.

The scoring was opened just after the half-hour mark by the fantastic Kobbie Mainoo, but the visitors replied after the break through Anthony Gordon.

Amad Diallo scored the first Premier League goal of his career shortly after, and substitute Rasmus Hojlund extended the lead in the 84th minute, however, it was a cagey end to the game as Lewis Hall fired in from range with minutes to go.

Despite it being a much better team performance by the Red Devils, certain individuals stood out above the rest, with one player proving to be as undroppable as Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes’ performance vs Newcastle

Having missed his first-ever game for United due to injury last week and also being forced to sit out against Arsenal at the weekend, the Portuguese magnifico returned to the starting lineup against the Magpies.

The United captain’s influence was instantly noticeable, leading by example off the ball and taking responsibility while in possession, as he always does.

The slight rest enabled the 29-year-old’s creativity to truly flourish while playing as a false nine throughout, producing five key passes, taking 70 touches, and having two attempts at goal.

Fernandes’ evening was topped off with his eighth Premier League assist of the season, slotting the ball into Hojlund’s feet, but there will be some concerns given he was substituted holding his hamstring.

However, although he was absolutely instrumental, the limelight was stolen by another attacker.

Amad Diallo’s stats vs Newcastle

After spending most of the season on the sidelines due to injury, Amad is finally getting his much-deserved chance to shine in the United starting lineup.

The Ivory Coast international made his first Premier League start at the weekend against Arsenal, and Ten Hag rewarded him with a place in the first eleven last night.

From the first minute until the last, the 21-year-old simply oozed class, showing attacking intent and excellent decision-making.

Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst handed Amad an 8/10 rating for his performance, the joint-highest score in the United side, which further highlights how impressive he was.

As you can see above, the “superstar,” as dubbed by football creator Liam Canning, was a dangerous outlet throughout and far more involved than Alejandro Garnacho, who struggled on the opposite flank, and even Mainoo, who had 39 touches.

It was Amad’s creativity and desire to make things happen that supplied Mainoo’s opener, and he also showcased that he’s a direct threat himself via his four shots, one of which flew past Martin Dubravka.

On top of this, the ex-Sunderland loanee showed excellent ball retention and technical class to evade the opponent’s press, completing two dribbles and losing the ball just eight times.

To complete the almost perfect performance, the left-footed magician proved that he will always guarantee 110% effort from an off-the-ball perspective, as shown by the fact he completed four defensive actions.

Overall, it’s going to be tough to displace him in the starting lineup after that performance, and as of right now, you’d fancy him to be on the field at Wembley.

Phil Hay "surprised" if Leeds don’t move for "outstanding" star this summer

Leeds United might be having to rapidly change their plans for the summer after Championship playoff heartbreak, but they still remain keen to add to their ranks ahead of the new season.

Firesale incoming at Leeds

A 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Wembley ensured that Leeds United will spend another season in England's second tier, and that is likely to have a knock on effect on their transfer business as their sorry play-off record continued.

Daniel Farke's side still owe £73.5m this summer in outstanding transfer fees from their time as a top-flight club, and it has been reported that they will have to raise up to £100m from player sales this summer, leaving a grim outlook at Elland Road.

Chief among those likely to leave is Championship player of the year Crysencio Summerville, while the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Archie Gray have also been mooted as potential sales as the Yorkshire side look to balance their books.

There are also question marks over plenty of returning loanees, with Diego Llorente, Rasmus Kristensen, Max Wober, Marc Roca and Jack Harrison all set to return from spells away from the club.

But Leeds remain keen to formulate transfer plans of their own despite the ongoing uncertainty, and now they have been tipped to make one move in particular.

Leeds believe they can still win Rodon race

That comes with Leeds still keen on turning Joe Rodon's loan move into a permanent one despite their second tier status next season. The Welshman, who is contracted to Tottenham but spent the year at Elland Road, was a key part of Farke's defence this season and has become a fan favourite too.

He was dubbed "outstanding" by former Leeds man Jon Newsome back in September after one particular performance against Millwall.

"Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. Joe Rodon was man of the match for me. He got his head on everything. He was a different class, he really, really was", Newsome told BBC Radio Leeds.

He went on to rack up 43 appearances, and Leeds Live report that those at Elland Road still hold hope that they can win the race for his services despite interest from teams in the top flight and an eight-figure price tag of around £10-15m.

The reliable Phil Hay has also backed Leeds to try and keep him beyond this summer despite rumoured interest from clubs that can offer Premier League football, admitting that the club should be doing everything to "get it done".

“I’d be really surprised if they didn’t have another go at Rodon, I really would. It will come down to what his alternatives are,” Hay said.

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

“If you looked at him this season as a team who has just been promoted or you’re bottom-end of the Premier League, the money you’d have to pay for him, by Premier League standards, isn’t massive, he might be worth a punt.

“Tottenham tend to bargain pretty hard, but he’s been so good this season and so steady you’d absolutely say if you can get him back that fills the right centre-back, get it done.”

Though it will likely come down to Rodon's personal ambitions, he seems to have settled in well at Elland Road, and should Leeds be able to keep him he could be the man to help them back to the top flight next season.

O Alvinegro encara a equipe de Alagoas em jogo atrasado da 6ª rodada, adiado à época por conta da realização da Copa América e pelo fato do Estádio Nilton Santos ter ficado à cargo da Conmebol para a competição.
