Late hitting sets Bears up for victory over Rapids

Birmingham Bears cemented their top-two spot in the Vitality Blast North Group after triumphing by 21 runs in the West Midlands derby with Worcestershire Rapids at New Road. The Bears were indebted to late hitting from Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell for setting a challenging target.Mousley’s unbeaten 49 was his T20 best this summer while Bethell’s 32 not out was his highest in the competition.Pakistan leg spinner Usama Mir had been re-signed by the Rapids for the remainder of the tournament after Michael Bacewell’s achilles injury and he returned 3 for 22.Club Captain Brett D’Oliveira struck his first T20 half-century of the season for the Rapids but his side struggled to break free from the Bears spinners. After winning their opening four games, Worcestershire have now lost four in a row as they suffered another dent to their qualification hopes.Worcestershire handed a first T20 appearance of the season to allrounder Matthew Waite while batter Adam Hose faced his former team-mates for the first time since moving to New Road on a three-year contract.Ex Worcestershire all-rounder Ed Barnard was recalled to the Bears side but key batter Sam Hain was ruled out with a hamstring injury. The Bears were put in to bat and openers Alex Davies and Rob Yates gave them a flying start. Yates top-edged Dillon Pennington for a huge six over keeper Ben Cox and then Davies was successful with a scoop off Pat Brown to bring up the half-century in 5.1 overs. But Brown made the first breakthrough in the same over when Davies slashed hard to Hose at point.Usama came into the attack and struck in his first over when Yates came down the wicket and was stumped by Ben Cox.Glenn Maxwell was quickly into his stride with a reverse sweep for six off D’Oliveira but soon perished at long on to give Mir a second scalp.Benjamin and Mousley added 51 in 6.2 overs before the former was run out attempting a second run after turning D’Oliveira to deep square leg.Barnard got off the mark with a boundary first ball but on seven tried to sweep Mir in his final over and was lbw.But some destructive hitting from Bethell and Mousley produced 51 runs from 3.1 overs to lift the final total close to 200.The Bears then made early inroads into the Rapids batting line-up.Ed Pollock was restored to the top of the order after Bracewell’s injury and off drove the first delivery from Hasan Ali for four. But the former Bears left hander was taken at mid off in the second over from Maxwell and then Jack Haynes was caught down the legside to the first ball of Henry Brookes’ spellD’Oliveira got the scoreboard moving with a scoop and cover-drive for successive boundaries at Brookes’ expense and back-to-back fours from the Rapids skipper brought up the 50 in 5.2 overs.Hose, who left Edgbaston to play more red-ball cricket, continued his recent good form and added 78 in 8.1 overs with D’Oliveira. But Barnard brought about his downfall with his second delivery as Hose could only pick out Maxwell at deep mid wicket.Worcestershire found it hard to get away the Bears spinners as the run rate climbed over 13 an over.D’Oliveira completed a half-century from 37 balls with one six and five fours but was stumped off Jake Lintott without addition to his score.Mitchell Santner could only find long off when attempting a big hit against Maxwell and, despite a late flurry of runs from Usama, the Bears ran out comfortable winners.

Sri Lanka crash out of T20 World Cup after 102-run thumping by New Zealand

New Zealand keep semi-final hopes alive but need Bangladesh to beat South Africa

Andrew Fidel Fernando19-Feb-2023New Zealand thumped Sri Lanka so severely in each team’s last match of the group stage, in Paarl, that they nullified the terrific start Sri Lanka had to the tournament, and gave themselves a chance of qualifying for the next stage, despite their own underperformance in their first two games.By claiming a 102-run victory, set up by terrific half-centuries from Amelia Kerr, who hit 66 off 48, and Suzie Bates, who made 56 off 49, New Zealand easily eclipsed Sri Lanka’s net run rate (NRR). Both teams have four points, but Sri Lanka’s NRR now finishes at a woeful -1.46; New Zealand’s is 0.138, although that won’t be enough if hosts South Africa beat Bangladesh on Tuesday. But Sri Lanka are out of the competition, despite having delivered an upset to South Africa to start their tournament, before also beating Bangladesh. They have never made it out of the group stage in a T20 World Cup.New Zealand’s 162 for 3 was made possible by Sri Lanka’s repeated fielding mistakes – at least two dropped catches, and as many missed run out chances. But it was not an unattainable score, until Sri Lanka’s top order crashed and burned in the space of 4.5 overs – the first five wickets going down for the addition of 13 runs. The collapse rolled on, and Sri Lanka were all out for 60 inside 16 overs. Seamer Achini Kulasuriya, who appeared to badly injure her shoulder while delivering her third over, could not bat.Kerr and Bates dominateBates and Kerr’s 110-run second-wicket partnership, which came off 83 deliveries, was the centrepiece of their victory. Bates had been the quieter of New Zealand’s openers in the powerplay, letting Bernadine Bezuidenhout create the early momentum with her 32 off 20 balls. But in the company of Kerr, she began to settle into a substantial innings. She struck Kavisha Dilhari for consecutive fours – one through deep third, the other through deep midwicket – in the ninth over, and appeared particularly at home at the crease.Kerr, meanwhile, seemed comfortable from the outset. She struck her third ball – from the experienced Inoka Ranaweera – to the boundary, and breezed her way through the middle overs, venturing only the occasional boundary on a pitch not particularly suited for big runs. At the end of the 14th over, she was 31 off 29, and then began to attack more seriously, finding frequent boundaries in front of square, as she muscled the Sri Lanka bowlers through the leg side with particular relish. They were both dismissed in the final over, but despite not having hit a six between them, had inflicted sufficient damage.Sri Lanka’s woeful fieldingSri Lanka should have had Bezuidenhout out for 7 when she had been stranded mid-pitch in the third over. But Kulasuriya’s throw from backward square leg was wayward and wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani could not collect.Bezuidenhout should have been out two overs later too, for 19, had Harshitha Samarawickrama held a catch at deep midwicket, off the bowling of Malsha Shehani. But she let the straightforward chance slip through her fingers.Bates was also a benefactor of Sri Lanka’s fielding largesse. She was dropped on 37 by Nilakshi de Silva – a skied chance to mid-on going down. Then in the 16th over, on 41, she could have been out again, had either the fielder at midwicket or the bowler who collected the ball made more accurate throws. But what pressure the Sri Lanka bowlers did create did not translate into wickets on account of their fielding.Catastrophic collapse costs SLAlthough New Zealand had made more runs than they ought to on a difficult surface, a target of 163 was not completely beyond Sri Lanka, particularly if their openers got going. Neither did. Sri Lanka struck only one boundary in the powerplay, as Jess Kerr, Hannah Rowe, and Eden Carson delivered tight early overs. And once the wickets started to fall, they went rapidly. Harshitha was caught in the outfield at deep midwicket, trying to slog her first boundary after a frustrating start. Vishmi Gunaratne was out next over, when Bates completed a spectacular catch running back from mid-on. De Silva had her leg stump rattled by a Jess Kerr yorker. And when captain Athapaththu was out for 19 in the seventh over, lbw on review against a straighter delivery from Amelia Kerr, Sri Lanka were always going to struggle.Had they made in to 123, they could still have finished ahead of New Zealand on NRR and given themselves some chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. But Sri Lanka’s middle order had not produced significant runs even in their wins. And here, they fell rapidly.

Fulham considering move to sign £6m+ a year Premier League player for free

The summer transfer window could be a busy period for Fulham, as they are already considering a move to sign a high paid Premier League player on a free transfer, according to a new report.

Fulham’s summer transfer plans beginning to take shape

It has been a very impressive campaign for the Cottagers, as they continue their push to qualify for Europe next season. A penalty shootout win over Manchester United last weekend means they also have a shot at the FA Cup to gain that qualification.

David Ornstein says Fulham want to sign "fantastic" 51-cap star this summer

Marco Silva appears keen to consolidate at Craven Cottage.

If European football is secured for next season, then the summer transfer window could be a very busy and important time for the London side. There are still a few months left of the season, but already the Premier League outfit have put plans in place for when the transfer window opens.

Last month it was reported that Fulham are among the teams keeping a close eye on Tammy Abraham, as he looks set to leave AS Roma at the end of the season. Abraham’s potential arrival could see him replace Raul Jimenez, whose current deal expires at the end of the campaign.

AC Milan'sTammyAbraham

As well as looking to possibly sign a new striker, Fulham are also admirers of Celtic defender Alistair Johnston, according to David Ornstein. Johnston has just signed a new contract with the Hoops, but the Cottagers are keeping a close eye on him ahead of the summer, as Marco Silva has his eye on adding to his defence.

Fulham considering move to sign Man Utd defender Lindelof

Johnston is not the only defender who could arrive at Craven Cottage in the summer, as according to Caught Offside, Fulham are weighing up a move for Victor Lindelof, who looks set to leave Man United at the end of this season.

Lindelof is the subject of interest from teams in the Premier League, Serie A, and the Portuguese league as he nears the end of his time at Old Trafford. The centre-back is out of contract in the summer, and there have been no talks about extending his stay at the club. Fulham, as well as West Ham, Everton and Wolves, are among the teams interested in signing him on a free transfer.

However, these English teams face stiff competition, as Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Benfica, who sold him to United, are also keen on landing the Sweden international.

The 30-year-old, who earns £6.2 million a year at United, has found game time hard to come by this season, playing just 11 games in all competitions. Most of his appearances have come in the Premier League, but of those six games, none have come as a starter. Fulham already have some decent options at the back in the form of Calvin Bassey, Joachim Andersen, and Issa Diop, to name a few, but Silva may want more competition and experience, and that is where Lindelof could come in.

£40m striker open to West Ham move as Sullivan eyes double forward swoop

West Ham United co-chair David Sullivan appears determined to back manager Graham Potter, and is even considering a double forward swoop this January.

West Ham enter January market for new striker after Fullkrug blow

Summer signing Niclas Füllkrug had only just returned from an achilles tendon problem and was actually starting to find his feet, but it didn’t take long for the German to be sidelined once again, this time suffering a hamstring injury.

Sky Sports: West Ham in talks for £20m star who's scored 3 goals vs Irons

He averages a goal every 75 minutes against the Hammers.

ByCharlie Smith Jan 15, 2025

The 31-year-old has been ruled out for three months in what is a seismic blow for Potter (Gary Jacob), who has just one natural striker in the previously out-of-favour Danny Ings, with West Ham now looking to January for solutions.

While reports that RB Leipzig striker Andre Silva is closing in on a move to West Ham appear wide of the mark, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has reported that the Hammers are serious about a potential deal for Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, and talks are apparently ongoing.

The Nigerian is behind in-form Forest star Chris Wood in Nuno Espirito Santo’s pecking order, so much so that the Nigerian has been linked with a move away from the City Ground before February 3.

Awoniyi got off to a flyer at the start of 2023/2024, but underwent groin surgery midway through the campaign and hasn’t really managed to battle his way back to form ever since – with Wood scoring for fun in the African’s stead.

West Ham could also try and sign Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton towards the end of the window if a move for Awoniyi fails, so there are plenty of options for Sullivan, who is taking a more hands-on approach to transfers this window.

“Even more power is going to be lying in the hands of David Sullivan as the chairman and co-owner of West Ham, and that includes January recruitment,” said David Ornstein recently.

“They need to bolster their attack in the absence of Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen.”

Marcus Rashford open to joining West Ham as Sullivan eyes two forwards

One of them is Man United striker Marcus Rashford, who is widely tipped to leave Old Trafford this month after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

The England international is attracting interest from Europe, mainly from AC Milan, and if a move there were to fail, then GiveMeSport claim that Rashford would be prepared to make a move to West Ham and hasn’t ruled out joining Potter’s side on loan behind-the-scenes.

GMS also report that the east Londoners could even look to sign two forwards rather than one this month, which would be quite a show of ambition on behalf of Potter.

Going back to Rashford, if West Ham were to want a permanent deal in the future, he’d apparently cost around £40 million.

£11,000-p/w Celtic ace reaches personal term agreement to leave Parkhead

A Celtic player who reportedly picks up around £11,000-a-week at Parkhead is close to a January exit.

Celtic transfer rumours

The Hoops are once again sitting pretty at the top of the Scottish Premiership, however, the club look like they could have a busy January transfer window, both in terms of incomings and outgoings. Brendan Rodgers has already allowed Stephen Welsh to join Belgian side KV Mechelen on loan this month, and there have been plenty of rumours regarding potential arrivals.

Celtic are working on a deal to bring former defender Kieran Tierney back to Parkhead, with the Arsenal left-back out of contract in the summer. Reports have claimed that Tierney could join Celtic on loan this month before penning a three-year permanent deal back in Glasgow.

Celtic are also set to make an offer for Bazoumana Toure of Hammarby, with the 18-year-old impressing scout Jay Lefevre, who watched Toure in action over in Sweden.

Another player of interest to Parkhead officials is teenage forward Mason Melia of St Patrick’s Athletic, with Celtic rivalling Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur and former boss Ange Postecoglou for the Irish youngster.

More players could also head out the Parkhead door, though, including winger Luis Palma. The Honduras international, who reportedly picks up around £11,000-a-week, came on as a substitute in the recent 2-0 win over Dundee United.

However, that may well be his final game in a green and white shirt following a new transfer development, despite Celtic previously rejecting two approaches for Palma’s services.

Celtic winger Luis Palma reaches agreement with new club

According to reports in Spain, Palma has reached an agreement with Rayo Vallecano and that the La Liga side want a loan deal with a €2.5m option to buy.

The departure of James Rodríguez has opened the door for Vallecano to move for Palma, and The Daily Mail’s reliable reporter Stephen McGowan has added that talks are open between the two clubs, with Rodgers narrowing down a search for a replacement.

Celtic forward Luis Palma.

“Rayo Vallecano have opened talks over a loan move for Celtic winger Luis Palma. And the Spanish club want a purchase option allowing them to buy the Honduran international for £2.1million.

“Brendan Rodgers is narrowing down the search for a new left winger this month. And, despite appearing as a second-half substitute in Celtic’s 2-0 win over Dundee United on Wednesday night, the 24-year-old has slipped down the pecking order and wants to try his luck elsewhere.”

Palma joined Celtic for around £4m in 2023 after being targeted by rivals Rangers and starred in his first campaign, contributing to 20 goals across all competitions.

However, this season, the 24-year-old hasn’t scored or provided an assist in 10 games, so should the Hoops secure a replacement, an exit could be best for all involved.

England docked two WTC points for maintaining slow over rate at Trent Bridge

In all they have lost 10 points to over-rate offences in the current WTC cycle

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jun-2022England have been docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points and their players have been fined 40% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over rate in their epic win in the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The hosts were ruled to be two overs short, after allowances were taken into consideration, by the on-field umpires Michael Gough and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Martin Saggers. Captain Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the offence, with match referee Richie Richardson imposing the sanction without the need for a formal hearing.England’s WTC points tally had risen to 42 after their win, before coming back down to 40.
