Liverpool In Talks Over Move For £50m "Monster"

Liverpool are locked in talks with Southampton over a deal for Romeo Lavia, with the midfielder now emerging as their "priority" target, according to a new update from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Who is Romeo Lavia signing for?

Journalist Rudy Galetti has recently reported that Arsenal remain in the race to sign Lavia, however he also adds it is Liverpool that are vying for his signature more than any other club, saying: “At the moment, they are more in the background for Romeo Lavia and to date, we can consider Liverpool the club most interested in Romeo Lavia.”

The Reds are now poised to make a second bid for the 19-year-old, with the Saints looking to hold out for a fee of around £50m, but Football Insider report that Chelsea have not given up in their pursuit of the youngster, having done a lot of work behind the scenes.

In a recent interview with CaughtOffside, Romano has confirmed the Blues are still in the race for the Southampton star, which means that Liverpool may be pressured into concluding a deal for the midfielder, who is emerging as their key target in that area of the pitch.

The transfer expert said: “Jurgen Klopp has spoken about working on solutions for midfield, but my understanding remains that the priority is still absolutely Romeo Lavia,”

“After that, we will see what else will happen in that position, but Liverpool remain focused on Lavia for now, and it’s not a straightforward deal – Southampton insist on £50m package for Lavia, so negotiation remain ongoing… but it will continue next week.

“Liverpool will try to find the best way to sign him also because they’re aware of Chelsea interest.”

Is Romeo Lavia going to Liverpool?

It is clear that Jurgen Klopp is very keen on signing the central midfielder, and the manager may have been handed a boost in the race for his signature, with Football Transfers speculating Chelsea may be ready to give up their pursuit.

The Reds' Premier League rivals have recently signed Lesley Ugochukwu, which means they do not have a pressing need to sign Lavia, particularly considering a move for Brighton & Hove Albion's Moises Caicedo is still on the cards.

If Liverpool do manage to bring in the Belgian, he could be a fantastic addition to the squad, with journalist Benjy Nurick praising him for his performance against Manchester City last season:

"Romeo Lavia was an absolute monster tonight. Quite possibly the best midfielder on the pitch. Seemed to win everything, so clean in possession, and controlling so much of the game. Won the ball back for both goals. What a player. Proving it against his former club."

romeo-lavia-premier-league-transfers-man-united

Although the Saints were ultimately relegated from the top flight, the former Man City man put in some very promising performances, making more tackles than any other U21 player in the Premier League.

With Fabinho set to move to the Saudi Pro League, Klopp is in need of a new defensive midfielder, so it is exciting news that Liverpool currently appear to be among the main contenders to sign Lavia.

Aston Villa: Emery Could Secure A Dendoncker Upgrade With £26m "Warrior"

Aston Villa enjoyed a fantastic end to the 2022/23 season and manager Unai Emery will be hoping the momentum can carry on into the new campaign.

With three players already arriving in the Midlands, the Spaniard will surely be aiming to add a few more fresh faces to his squad, especially with the added Europa Conference League fixtures which are set to cause chaos with their schedule.

With this in mind, Villa have shown an interest in Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie ahead of a potential move to the Premier League.

Could Aston Villa sign Franck Kessie?

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Villa are interested in bringing the player to England, and it is his preferred destination should he depart the La Liga side this summer.

He could cost Emery just €30m (£26m) and considering the Spaniard has already spent €55m (£47m) on Moussa Diaby and £31.5m on Pau Torres during the transfer window, big money is being expended on luring quality players to the Midlands.

A fee of £26m is certainly affordable and could turn into a shrewd investment by the manager as he looks to take Villa to another level.

Who has Franck Kessie played for?

Under Steven Gerrard, Villa made a few signings which haven’t really worked out, such as Philippe Coutinho and Calum Chambers, whilst Leander Dendoncker surprisingly arrived on deadline day from local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, and it was clearly a signing of desperation rather than necessity.

The Belgian titan started just nine games for the Villans last season, and despite Kessie making just 16 starts across all competitions himself, he would be an upgrade on the current Villa player.

Indeed, not only did the 26-year-old register more domestic goal contributions (five to zero) than Dendoncker, but also more shots per 90 (1.66 to 0.51), shot-creating actions per 90 (1.91 to 1.18) and touches in the attacking third (133 to 67), suggesting he would be a much bigger threat going forward due to his attacking capabilities.

Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie.

Despite his lack of playing time domestically, Kessie still managed to rank in the top 12% compared to positional peers for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 (2.6) and progressive passes received per 90 (4.44), indicating that he is a prominent fixture in the penalty area, looking to get on the end of chances created by teammates.

The Ivorian further demonstrated his attacking qualities during his spell with Milan, scoring six Serie A goals in 2021/22 from just 25 starts while also holding an 88% pass completion rate and winning 4.4 duels per game – a success rate of 55% – displaying that he isn’t only a threat going forward but can also dictate play and is strong in one on one battles.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig lauded the midfielder as a “warrior” during the embryonic stages of his career with Atalanta and alongside Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans, Emery requires someone like Kessie, who has shown he could offer both attacking and defensive qualities in abundance.

For £26m, it could turn out to be a wonderful bargain.

Leeds Agree Terms With Potential £4m Ampadu Partner

Leeds United appear to be stepping up their preparations ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign, with Daniel Farke and co looking set to make their first moves in the transfer market.

What are the latest Leeds transfer rumours?

As per The Athletic's Phil Hay, the Whites are seemingly closing in on their first signing of the summer after reaching an agreement with Chelsea for the £7m capture of Ethan Ampadu, with the 22-year-old having spent the last four seasons away from Stamford Bridge on loan.

The 44-cap Wales international could be joined in the midfield ranks at Elland Road by Rangers ace, Glen Kamara, with Last Word on Sports revealing that the Yorkshire side have agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old.

If Leeds are to land the formee Dundee man this summer, The 4th Official has previously suggested that it could require a fee of around £4m, with two years left to run on his existing deal at Ibrox.

Who is Glen Kamara?

The Finland international has spent the last four-and-a-half years with the Old Firm giants after signing for a minimal fee of just £50k back in January 2019, with teammate Scott Arfield having branded that deal the "biggest steal of the century" due to the midfielder's subsequent impact in Glasgow.

Lauded as a "class act" by former Gers boss Steven Gerrard, the 5 foot 11 ace has racked up 193 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish Premiership side to date, chipping in with nine goals and 11 assists from his defensive midfield berth.

That stint north of the border has also seen the former Arsenal youth star win the league title and claim Scottish Cup glory, while he was also part of the side that reached the Europa League final back in 2022.

Although the 52-cap maestro did somewhat fall down the pecking order last term – as he started just 12 league games – he has received glowing praise for his displays prior to that, with Gerrard previously stating:

"He’s a terrific footballer in possession, always playing with his head up and looking to connect defence and attack."

Ethan Ampadu in action for Wales.

With the likes of Marc Roca and Weston McKennie having moved onto pastures new – and with Tyler Adams still facing an uncertain future at Elland Road – Farke could be set to revamp his Leeds midfield by placing Kamara alongside Ampadu next term.

As Gerrard alluded to, the Light Blues ace is able to offer a truly composed presence in the centre of the park, showcased by the fact that he achieved an average pass accuracy rate of 89% in the league last term, while losing possession just 5.6 times per game on average.

With Kamara the man to 'connect defence and attack' – as per Gerrard – Ampadu can then be utilised as something of a midfield destroyer, with the versatile ace, who can also feature at centre-back, having showcased his ball-winning quality on loan at Serie A side Spezia last season.

The 6 foot menace – who is typically deployed in a defensive midfield role for his country – notably averaged 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game in 2022/23 as a marker of his ball-winning prowess, with that an area that Kamara appears to be weak in, having averaged just one tackle and interception per game last term.

The differing strengths of the pair should make them an impressive combination for the Yorkshire side next term, with Farke finally set to be able to put his imprint on the current squad by bringing in fresh faces.

Chelsea Eye Deal To Sign "Athletic" £28m Dynamo

Chelsea has kickstarted their multi-club project by purchasing a majority stake in Strasbourg.

Todd Boehly said this move is a method to make sure “we can show pathways for our young superstars to get onto the Chelsea pitch while getting them real game time”.

As well as the Blues’ gloriously talented academy, the purchase of another club can act as another developmental agency, where products can be guaranteed regular game-time away from the English capital.

This practice follows the vastly successful model that has been deployed by Manchester City’s parent company, the City Football Group, and Brighton, who also own Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise, where the wonderful Kaoru Mitoma enjoyed a successful loan spell.

With Chelsea now able to use the same tactic, one of the first beneficiaries could be Elye Wahi.

What’s the latest on Elye Wahi to Chelsea?

According to RMC Sport, Chelsea is set to make an offer of around €32m (£28m) including bonuses for the Montepellier livewire.

If successful, the 2021 Champions League winners would send the 20-year-old to Strasbourg on loan for the upcoming season.

Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are also interested in Wahi but are yet to initiate any formal contact.

Mauricio Pochettino already possesses Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, and Armando Broja so trying to squeeze Wahi into a squad that isn’t playing European football would be illogical.

Another year of regular minutes in a league to which he is accustomed is a logical plan and could Chelsea in a devilish position next summer.

Is Elye Wahi a good signing for Chelsea?

The Frenchman has just enjoyed the most productive year of his career to date, netting 19 times in 33 Ligue 1 outings at a rate of 0.68 goals per 90.

His impressive campaign included a spell-binding performance against Lyon back in May. In a 5-4 loss, the forward netted four goals from 1.31 xG (expected goals).

This commendable goal-scoring record places the youngster within the best 7% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for non-penalty goals per 90, and he has forged an esteemed reputation throughout his homeland.

Ex-Caen academy director Francis de Taddeo has described Wahi as “powerful” and “athletic”, with a “range of dribbling skills.”

This summer, it seems that Chelsea is making a habit of targeting Ligue 1’s most talented prodigies, with the English Giant also chasing Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.

The playmaker could cost the Blues around £34m, but he’s already been earmarked as one of the world’s most exciting assets.

Rayan Cherki Chelsea target

Since he made his debut, the dazzling technician has consistently broken records.

In the last few years, he has become: the youngest scorer in Lyon history (aged 16 years and 140 days versus Bourg-en-Bresse Peronnas in the Coupe de France in 2020), the youngest player to play in a Champions League semi-final (aged 17 years and 3 days in the 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich in 2020), and the second-youngest Ligue 1 scorer for Lyon (aged 17 years and 258 days against Monaco in May 2021).

However, last term was his most productive and influential as he notched ten goal involvements in 21 Ligue 1 starts.

As well as this ruthless efficiency, he was just one of nine players and the only U23, to record more than 100 progressive passes and 100 progressive carries.

As Chelsea pursues its relentless quest to source the globe’s best young players, Wahi and Cherki would be a phenomenal way to continue this trend.

Newcastle: Howe Eyeing Own Nkunku In "Special" £11m Sensation

Newcastle United are looking to build something special.

Eddie Howe’s men massively exceeded expectations last season and secured Champions League football.

This was achieved with a decent squad, but the Magpies now must rise to the next level and continue signing Europe’s most elite talent.

Joao Felix looks to be available following the conclusion of his loan spell at Chelsea and this would be an inspired piece of business for Newcastle.

What’s the latest on Joao Felix to Newcastle?

According to reports from Spain (via Sport Witness), the Magpies, as well as Manchester United and Aston Villa, are all in the race for the Atletico Madrid man.

The representatives of the aforementioned trio have made ‘contact’ with Felix, who is ‘seduced’ by the English top-flight.

However, the 23-year-old is keen to join a club that can offer Champions League football, which places the Tyneside Giant in the driving seat.

Chronicle Live previously revealed that Newcastle was in talks for a £11m loan offer.

Whatever happens, it seems that Felix is destined to leave Atletico due to a breakdown of his relationship with Diego Simeone.

Chief Executive Miguel Angel Marin has commented on this, saying:

“Joao Felix is the biggest investment this club has made. I believe he is a world-class player, but for reasons not worth getting into now, the relationship between him and the míster is not good, nor is his motivation. The reasonable thing is to think he will leave."

His likely departure has been fuelled by the club’s decision to give Felix’s number seven to Antoine Griezmann.

The opportunity is there for Newcastle to pounce, and the Portuguese can add an array of skills to Saint James Park.

What can Joao Felix bring to Newcastle United?

The playmaker arrived at Chelsea on loan in January, scoring four goals in 11 Premier League starts. He joined the Blues in extremely tricky circumstances and although there were struggles for consistency, he still displayed flashes of his dazzling brilliance.

The former Benfica prodigy possesses a natural elegance and impeccable flair, which led Jonas Goncalves Oliveira to describe him as: “A boy who has enormous quality and a calmness with the ball in the feet."

But Mauricio Pochettino opted against an attempt to re-sign the joyous technician. This is most likely due to the similarity of his attacking profile in comparison to Christopher Nkunku, who is one of the latest additions at Stamford Bridge.

christopher-nkunku-transfer-chelsea

The two forwards sit closely in a number of creative metrics. Felix narrowly outranks the Frenchman for total shots per 90 (4.04 vs 3.11), progressive passes per 90 (4.12 vs 3.44), progressive carries per 90, and successful take-ons per 90 (1.89 vs 1.68). Nkunku beats Felix for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.28 vs 3.52), but every statistic mentioned places both men within the best 22% in Europe’s top five leagues among their positional peers for each category.

Both players are enigmatic and inventive playmakers, who relish freedom and Howe could unearth an absolute game-changer for the Magpies.

Described as “special” by Alvaro Morata and someone who is “capable of magic on a football pitch” by former Benfica scout Jean-Claude Abeddou, Felix is extraordinarily talented and can elevate Newcastle to the coveted next level.

Rangers Must Make Move For "Terrific" £1.2m Gem

Glasgow Rangers have already made six signings this summer as Michael Beale aims to significantly overhaul the Ibrox side before the new campaign begins next month and there could yet be a seventh arrival in the coming weeks…

When will Jose Cifuentes arrive at Rangers?

It feels as though the interest from Rangers regarding a move for Jose Cifuentes has gone on forever, yet it was only back in April when the Light Blues first registered their interest in the dynamic Ecuadorian midfielder, who is out of contract at the end of the year.

Beale appears keen to bring him to Glasgow ahead of the 2023/24 season, which would involve paying a fee to Los Angeles FC and this has now been revealed.

According to The Scottish Sun, the Ibrox side have been locked in talks with LAFC across the previous week and it is believed that the Gers will have to fork out around £1.2m in order to secure his signature this summer as opposed to waiting until January to sign him for nothing.

Having already spent £3m on Sam Lammers and £4.5m to sign Cyriel Dessers, Beale appears to have the financial backing of the board and the money should be spent to sign the 24-year-old sooner rather than later.

What could Jose Cifuentes offer Rangers?

The midfielder has been in wonderful form for the MLS side since the start of the 2022 season, scoring eight goals and registering ten assists, and he played a key role in LAFC securing the MLS Cup last term, showcasing his importance to the side.

With Beale slowly rejuvenating the squad, there will likely be many departures in the coming weeks in order to make way for the new arrivals, and one player who looks certain to leave is Glen Kamara.

The Finnish midfielder has been at Ibrox since 2019, however, Besiktas are ready to take him on loan for next season and Cifuentes would certainly be a major upgrade on the 27-year-old.

Kamara stuttered through an underwhelming 2022/23 season, ranking as just the 23rd best player in the squad for league performances as per Sofascore, while also finishing outside the top ten for accurate passes per game, tackles per game and successful dribbles per game as he failed to have a positive influence on the side.

In contrast, Cifuentes ranked as the sixth-best player in the LAFC squad during their successful 2022 season and finished in the top ten for accurate passes per game, tackles per game and successful dribbles per game, ranking as high as third for the latter two metrics as he emerged as one of the finest players in the squad.

There is no doubt the players are heading in opposite trajectories, with the Ecuadorian dynamo ready for a move to Europe to showcase his abilities in the Champions League, while Kamara doesn’t fit into Beale’s system and is likely to be moved on.

South American football expert Tim Vickery lavished praise upon him back in 2019 following his exploits at the U20 World Cup, saying: "He was the beating heart of that side and I think he’s a terrific midfielder. He’s strong, he’s got quality, he’s got a good engine – he’s one of the best all-round midfielders, potentially, that I’ve seen come out of South America in a while.”

Glowing praise indeed and Beale should be paying the paltry £1.2m as soon as possible to bring him to Scotland.

Chelsea: Boehly "really, really" likes "monster" in "tough deal"

Chelsea "really, really like" AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan and are interested in bringing the player to the Premier League, but the deal itself is "really tough" to get done, claims journalist Ben Jacobs.

Chelsea transfer news – what's the latest on Mike Maignan?

The Blues have been having something of a fire sale in recent weeks, with players like N'Golo Kante and Kalidou Koulibaly joining the Saudi Pro League, whilst Mason Mount and Kai Havertz have moved to Manchester United and Arsenal, respectively.

Chelsea Mike Maignan

Among the players bidding farewell to Stamford Bridge is Champions League-winning goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who has also opted to join the Middle East's burgeoning super league, joining Al-Ahli.

That move has left Kepa Arrizablaga as the club's undisputed number one, but based on recent reports, it appears that the club does not have the most faith in the Spaniard.

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea are 'considering a move' for the French international, despite manager Mauricio Pochettino's 'willingness to start the season with Kepa.'

If the Blues are serious about securing the keeper's signature, they will have to stump up some serious cash, as transfers expert Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier this month that Milan have priced their player at over €55m.

What has journalist Ben Jacobs said about Mike Maignan to Chelsea?

Jacobs explained that the interest and admiration from the West London club is genuine.

Speaking to Football FanCast, he said: "Mike Maignan is someone that Chelsea really, really like, but it's a really tough deal to do with Milan."

Would Mike Maignan be a good signing for Chelsea?

While Kepa has certainly improved for Chelsea over the last 18 months, Maigan would be a brilliant signing for the Blues and a real step up in terms of quality.

According to WhoScored, Milan's shot-stopping extraordinaire had a brilliant season in Serie A last year, averaging a rating of 6.64 across his 22 games.

The Cayenne-born "monster" – as described by journalist Robin Bairner – looks even more impressive when you look at his underlying numbers.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

According to FBref, who compare players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, the Frenchman is in the top 8% for saved penalty kicks, the top 11% for goals against, and the top 22% for clean.

If that wasn't enough FBref also considers both Alisson and Ederson to be within the five most similar goalkeepers to Maignan, hardly bad company to keep.

If Chelsea can, they certainly should get this deal done, even if AC Milan want a king's ransom.

Chelsea Could Swap Lukaku For £52m-Rated ‘Monster’

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has numerous issues to deal with as his first day on the job approaches this weekend, the future of striker Romelu Lukaku being one of them.

While that decision may well be above his paygrade, with Todd Boehly very much taking a hands-on approach since becoming chairman last year, Pochettino will no doubt have a say in whether Lukaku has a part to play following his return from a loan spell with Inter Milan.

What is the latest with Romelu Lukaku's Chelsea future?

The Telegraph reports that further talks between Lukaku and Chelsea are planned for this week, and that it is in everyone's interest to find a solution sooner rather than later.

It is suggested that it is unlikely Lukaku will play any part in Chelsea's tour of the United States next month, but finding a club willing to sign him permanently – the Belgian is said to have ruled out the option of joining a Saudi club – is proving difficult.

However, a solution may soon be found as Juventus have supposedly shown an interest in signing Lukaku to replace Dusan Vlahovic, who could in turn head in the opposite direction to Stamford Bridge.

The Belgian's second stint in the capital has been nothing short of a nightmare, with an angry public interview in 2021 seeing him subsequently loaned out ever since.

Could Chelsea swap Romelu Lukaku for Dusan Vlahovic?

The intricacies of any deal are unclear at this stage, such as one club handing over a fee in part exchange, but the transfer could well make sense for both clubs.

Given his value of £52m by Football Observatory, it is likely to be Chelsea reaching for their chequebook rather than Juve.

On the face of it, there is very little between the two players when it comes to how they performed in Serie A last season. Vlahovic scored ten goals in 27 games for Juve, while Lukaku netted the same number across 25 outings for Inter.

romelu-lukaku-transfer-opinion-newcastle-united-alexander-isak-premier-league

Vlahovic's goals came from fewer shots, scoring at a rate of 0.16 goals per shot, as per FBref, compared to 0.12 for Lukaku. Those similarities continue in terms of passes completed (71.6% and 68.6% respectively) and also aerial duels won (36 v 39).

What Vlahovic provides that Lukaku does not, however, is some added balance in the final third. For example, the Serbia international won 0.28 tackles per 90 minutes last season, which is an increase on Lukaku's 0.05. That is the same case in terms of blocks: 0.47 compared to 0.16.

Once described as a "monster" by Italian football expert Carlo Garganese, there is no denying that Vlahovic's goalscoring figures have steadily declined, from 0.82 per game at Fiorentina in the first half of the 2021-22 season, to 0.59 after joining Juve later that campaign and finally to 0.47 last term.

But in a team stacked full of attacking gems, such as Mykhailo Mudryk and new signing Christopher Nkunku to name just a couple of players, it may well be that a move to Stamford Bridge unlocks the potential Vlahovic has only been able to show glimmers of in Turin.

Rangers: Gers "Working" To Seal "Exemplary" Signing

Rangers are attempting to seal the signing of Cremonese striker Cyriel Dessers as manager Michael Beale personally works behind the scenes, according to reports.

Who will join Rangers this summer?

The Gers resume action mid-way through July when they take on Premier League side Newcastle United in a friendly, the first of three next month, with Beale also preparing for games against Hamburg and Hoffenheim.

Scottish Premiership action resumes on 5th August, giving Rangers over a month to strengthen in key areas and keep adding quality to Beale's roster.

The Teddy Bears had to watch on as Old Firm rivals Celtic clinched a domestic treble, and with their previously successful manager Brendan Rodgers returning to Parkhead, Rangers need to be fully prepared.

Beale, despite the lack of a sporting director, has already seen Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell and Sam Lammers come arrive in that order.

Spending just £3 million in the process, with all of it going on Lammers from Atalanta, Rangers have tackled this transfer market with gusto thus far.

However, they're not finished there, as a report from The Herald details the latest on their activities behind-the-scenes at Ibrox.

According to the outlet, and senior Gers reporter Christopher Jack, Beale personally been driving their window so far – identifying targets himself and personally building the relationships necessary to get them over the line.

Following the confirmed arrivals, it is believed Rangers work is "ongoing" to "secure" striker Dessers from Cremonese – and discussions have been held for other players in recent days.

The Glasgow giants are attempting to keep up their market momentum and certainly won't rest on their laurels, with Ecuador international Jose Cifuentes still on their radar.

Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo is being targeted as well, though a move is not thought to be imminent at this stage.

Who is Cyriel Dessers?

The 28-year-old was one of Cremonese's most potent threats over the 2022/23 Serie B season, averaging more attempts at goal per 90 than any of his teammates (WhoScored).

Dessers scored six goals and added a further two assists overall, with former Heracles technical director Tim Gilissen heaping praise on the forward after he left them back in 2020.

"Cyriel has shown that being a professional footballer means more than just football," said Giliseen.

"He is an exemplary professional and enjoyed participating in many social projects. He has shown what impact this has in the area and was an ambassador for Heracles Almelo."

Newcastle Could Make Joelinton Better By Signing £80m ‘Monster’

Newcastle United have been strongly linked with Nicolo Barella this summer and now a new update has emerged on the club's pursuit of the player.

What's the latest on Newcastle's interest in Nicolo Barella?

The Independent's chief football writer Miguel Delaney reported that Newcastle have been in ongoing negotiations to sign the Inter Milan midfielder this summer.

As per an article written for the publication, Delaney revealed that the Magpies are currently £30m off the Italian club's valuation of £80m and will need to compete with Liverpool who are also keen to secure a deal for the talented Serie A star this summer.

That said, any deal could now be off the cards with the Toon turning their attention to Sandro Tonali, who they are believed to be close to signing.

Would Barella be a good fit for Newcastle?

There is no doubt that Eddie Howe will be thrilled with the rapid progress and development his team has made over the last 18 months, however, with Champions League football secured it will be important to bolster key positions and add quality depth in the squad.

As a result, the signing of not just Tonali, but also Barella would be an ambitious move for the club in their pursuit to compete at the highest level both domestically and in Europe next season and his presence in the team could have a positive impact on his fellow midfielders at St James' Park.

The 26-year-old would offer an incredible wealth of experience in European football to Howe next season, with 34 appearances, five goals and two assists in both the Europa League and Champions League over his career so far and most recently reached the final in Istanbul against Manchester City earlier this month.

Barella – hailed a "monster" by writer Carlo Garganese – ranks in the top 19% of his positional peers in the top five European leagues for progressive passes, progressive carries, shot-creating actions and non-penalty goals, making him the perfect profile of player to link up with Joelinton.

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton.

The Brazilian ace was a revelation in both his midfield role and on the left-flank last term – scoring six goals, registering one assist and creating four big chances, so by combining his keen eye for attacking opportunities with Barella's ability to progress the ball into dangerous areas of the pitch, it could make Joelinton unplayable next season.

With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for the club's hierarchy to sanction the move for the Inter sensation this summer as his Champions League experience and clear talent in midfield could put Newcastle in a great position to compete more than comfortably throughout 2022/23.
