WHAT HAPPENED?
Two goals apiece from Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee inspired United to a 4-0 victory over the Toffees in what was Amorim's first Premier League home game at Old Trafford. The result pushes United up to 19 points, trailing Brighton by four in the race for the coveted Champions League spots.

WHAT AMORIM SAID
When asked about Manchester United's prospects of securing a top-four finish, Amorim offered a measured response.
âI will be judged [on] the place that we finish. If I said no you will say that I cannot be a Manchester United manager,â said the 39-year-old to reporters. âI want to be honest with our fans â so letâs focus on the performance, not the results. Letâs focus just on the next game and look at the performance. Thursday [against Bodø/Glimt] it was 3-2, but I think we deserved more. Today was 4-0 â but I think Everton deserved [more]. So letâs focus on the performance.â
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Zirkzee had faced criticism for a slow start to his United career. And eyebrows were raised when Amorim decided to give him a start over Rasmus Hojlund, who had scored twice in their recent Europa League clash against Bodo/Glimt.
âIt would have been really hard for Rasmus to fight with the two centre-backs of Everton so we tried to push them to a position they are not so comfortable with,â he explained. âJosh did a great job, scored two goals which is always important for the confidence, and more important than that is the performance and how he fought in every situation. It was a good day for him and our team.â

WHAT NEXT FOR AMORIM?
With momentum on their side, Manchester United now turn their attention to a high-stakes encounter against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. The Gunners, currently second in the Premier League standings, pose a significant challenge for Amorimâs team but the manager hopes his side can replicate their recent form against a tougher opposition.
West Brom have tabled an offer for an "excellent" £5,400-a-week player and have already received a reply, according to a new transfer update from Sky Sports.
West Brom transfer news
Carlos Corberan's side fell short in their quest to leap from the Championship to the Premier League last season, losing to Southampton in the playoff semi-finals. There is renewed hope that the Baggies will again be one of the promotion front-runners in 2024/25, however, summer transfer business is vital to ensure they have the best possible chance of going up.
Torbjorn Heggem has already arrived at West Brom from Brommapojkarna, along with free signings such as Devante Cole and Ousmane Diakite, while Paddy McNair has joined on loan from San Diego FC. More signings could be needed, though, and other players continue to be linked with summer moves.
Standard Liege and Northern Ireland midfielder Isaac Price is one such figure, with the Baggies attempting to lure him back to English football, having moved to Belgium from Everton in 2023. They have bid for his services, hoping to boost Corberan's depth in the middle of the park in the process.
Meanwhile, young Leicester City striker Tom Cannon has also been backed to secure a summer move to West Brom, with a loan move feeling most likely, should they manage to strike a deal. The 21-year-old was limited to just three starts in the Championship last season and could feel that a move elsewhere is best for his development.
West Brom table bid for "excellent" ace
According to Sky Sports, West Brom have made a move for Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles, tabling a bid, but have seen their offer rejected by the League One side.
The update goes on to claim that the Baggies "remain interested along with others from the Championship and MLS", suggesting that they are far from done with trying to snap up the Hungarian.
Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles.
Styles is an impressive footballer who surely feels like he should at least be playing Championship football at this stage in his career, considering he is a 23-time capped Hungary international. The midfielder did enjoy a loan period at Sunderland in the second half of last season, but a permanent move to a second-tier club could make sense.
The 24-year-old appeared once for his country at Euro 2024, further showcasing his ability, and former Barnsley manager Neill Collins has lauded him, saying:
"Callum's talent is undoubted and again for me, he has been excellent in pre-season. As long as I have got players like that, I will be delighted. I hope I can just help him continue to improve and become the player he has got the potential to be. He's definitely enjoyable for everyone to watch."
The £5,400-a-week Styles possesses the quality and experience to be a great signing for West Brom, while also remaining relatively young, combining technical ability and defensive nous.

A tally of 22 goal contributions (13 goals and nine assists) in 151 appearances for Barnsley shows that he is capable of chipping in with end product, while an average of 1.8 tackles per game at Sunderland in the league last term highlights his off-the-ball impact.
With the Premier League set to get underway this weekend, Newcastle United are still no closer to securing a transfer for a new right-sided attacker.
Although Eddie Howe has Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron at his disposal in that area, the Magpies boss wants another elite-level talent to take his forward line to the next level.
Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon have cemented their places as regular starters at the top end of the pitch, but no player is yet to stake their claim for a consistent spot at St James’ Park.
Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak
Howe’s side have been in the market for a new forward in that department, but have failed to agree any deals – despite huge rumours linking Chelsea ace Noni Madueke with a move to Tyneside.
However, they could reignite interest in one player who’s previously been on the club’s radar, but any move would cost the Magpies a pretty penny.
Newcastle still want £40m attacking talent
According to iNews, Newcastle still hold an interest in signing Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga this summer, after previous interest in the 22-year-old earlier this summer.
The Swedish international was touted with a move to Tyneside at the end of June, potentially being included in a deal that saw Elliot Anderson move to the City Ground.
However, no move for the former Manchester United ace ever materialised, but Howe’s side could yet test the waters over a move for Elanga before the closure of the window on August 30th.
It would be another expensive signing for the club following the Saudi PIF takeover back in 2021, with the Reds demanding a fee in the region of £40m to part ways with one of their star attackers.
He would be an excellent pickup for the Magpies, potentially following in the footsteps of one player who captured the hearts of many during his time at St James’.
Why Elanga could be the next Saint-Maximin
French winger Allan Saint-Maximin arrived at the club back in 2019 as an unknown quantity – with very little of the fanbase having any idea of the talent he possessed.
saint-maximin-newcastle-premier-league-transfers
However, he lit up Tyneside with his excellent ball-carrying ability and his eye for taking on the opposition, providing excitement every time he got on the ball with his unpredictability – duly dubbed a "wizard" by journalist Graeme Bailey.
During his four-year stay at the club, the 27-year-old made 124 appearances, scoring 13 goals before leaving in a big-money deal to join Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli.
12 months on from his departure, Elanga could be brought in to fill the void on the right-hand side, whilst also bringing an unpredictable style back to Howe’s side.
When delving into his stats at Forest last season, the Swede excelled with the ball at his feet, creating endless opportunities – making him perfect for the rest of the Newcastle forward line.
The “sensational” talent, as described by Sky Sports' Joe Thomlinson, achieved a total of 14 combined goals and assists, averaging 3.6 progressive carries per 90 – showcasing his ability at taking the ball into attacking areas like Saint-Maximin.

Whilst he would be an expensive addition for the club, he would provide excellent quality in attacking areas, potentially completing Howe’s attack at St James’.
Anthony Elanga.
The "electric" Swede – as described by Statman Dave – could also fill the boots of Saint-Maximin, offering a sense of unpredictability and speed that has been missing in the squad since the Frenchman’s departure last summer.
Should the deal be completed it could see the club’s attack have that added cutting edge, giving them a huge boost in their aim to secure Champions League football once again.

âIâm sure Liverpool are trying their hardest to keep the three of them there, but as a footballer, you canât blame them if they want to taste playing abroad, playing for Real Madrid â for a young player like Trent, you canât really blame him.
âFor the older lads like Salah, I can also understand. Why would you stay a couple more years if you donât think youâre going to be the player you were and you lose that hero status?

WHAT NEXT?
The Reds will continue with their efforts to get Salah and Alexander-Arnold to remain at Anfield. Liverpool will be in action next when they take on Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, December 22.
Erik ten Hag has never been one to make wholesale changes, even after a defeat, but it would be safe to assume that the Manchester United boss will at least make one tweak to his side ahead of Liverpool's visit this weekend, by recalling Alejandro Garnacho to the starting lineup.
The Argentine is yet to start a game this season but has looked electric in each of his three substitute appearances to date, notably scoring the opener in the eventual Community Shield defeat, prior to teeing up Joshua Zirkzee on the opening day to help see off Fulham.
Were it not for a shock miss against the Cottagers – and the presence of a sliding Zirkzee against Brighton and Hove Albion last time out – the 20-year-old would also have two league goals to his name, illustrating just what a pivotal asset he has become under the Dutchman in recent seasons.
With 15 goal involvements across all fronts last term, Garnacho was the shining light of the attacking unit in 2023/24, with it looking as if United could still do with further firepower to help try and replicate the youngster's impact.
Latest Man Utd transfer news
According to Football Insider, the Red Devils could agree to a 'sensational swap deal' that would see Jadon Sancho join rivals Chelsea, with compatriot Raheem Sterling thus moving in the opposite direction.
As per the report, both players are 'surplus to requirements' at their respective clubs and could well move on before the window slams shut, albeit with any deal likely to be 'difficult to negotiate'.
This comes amid parallel claims that Sterling – who joined the Blues on a £47.5m deal back in 2022 – would be open to joining the Old Trafford side this summer, having been cast aside by new boss Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge.
This is echoed by The Telegraph who have suggested that United have even opened talks with the west Londoners over a swap deal involving the pair, with Dan Ashworth having been in contact with his Chelsea counterparts on Tuesday.
Why Man Utd should sign Raheem Sterling
There will no doubt be large sections of the United support who would turn their nose up at such a deal, not least due to Sterling's prior Liverpool and Manchester City connections, with the 29-year-old also boasting a grim record against the Red Devils, having failed to score in 26 career meetings.
But hey, if you can't beat them, join them.
It is hard to deny that it has been an underwhelming stint in west London for the wideman after registering just 31 goals and assists in 81 games in all competitions over the last two seasons, albeit with that return far exceeding many of United's current crop of forwards in their time at the club to date.

Arguably "unplayable" when truly at his best – according to pundit Paul Merson – Sterling also boasts 44 goal involvements in just 82 games in the Champions League, while also scoring 20 times in 82 games for his country, including netting three times en route to the final at Euro 2020.

With Sancho potentially on his way and the likes of Rashford and Antony – who scored just 11 goals between them last season – failing to fire, the addition of a fresh option out wide could be just what is needed to get this goal-shy side clicking into gear.
On the face of it, Sterling would not be a popular arrival at the Theatre of Dreams, but if his affiliation to Anfield and the Etihad can be overlooked, then United could well pull off an astute, last-gasp deal.

One Manchester City star who has been described as “remarkable” by manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that he will soon be having conversations with the club over his contract situation.
The Blues had a relatively quiet transfer window this summer, but that hasn’t stopped them from making another strong start to the Premier League season. Guardiola’s side have won their first three league games of the campaign, with their latest victory coming against West Ham United.

Manchester City’s summer transfer window
As stated, the club was rather quiet this summer, making just two new additions. One of those was in the form of Savinho joining from French side Troyes and the other saw midfielder İlkay GündoÄan re-join from FC Barcelona.

However, the club did see a lot of players leave, with the most high-profile departure being forward Julian Alvarez, who left to join Atlético Madrid. As well as the Argentine, City also let João Cancelo, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and Sergio Gomez leave on a permanent basis.
Despite signing just two new players, City were said to be looking at some new faces as the window came to a close. Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson was linked and is expected to be a target in 2025, though he could cost up to £70m.
As well as potentially looking to sign Ferguson, City were also said to be interested in Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi, with Guardiola said to be a “huge” fan of his. The 29-year-old impressed for Celtic in pre-season against City and was at it again in his side's win over Rangers on Sunday.

£55m Man City ace set to have contract conversations
Manchester City’s talisman Kevin de Bruyne has revealed that he will be having “conversations” with the club about his contract situation, as he is in the final year of his deal. De Bruyne cost the Blues £55 million in August 2015, and given what he has achieved at the club, it was worth every penny.
The Belgium superstar, who Guardiola described as “remarkable” after the club beat Southampton 4-1 back in April 2023, believes there will be conversations between him and the club once the season gets into full swing.
De Bruyne told journalist Mike Minay, via Manchester City News: “I haven’t spoken to anyone. There’s been a lot of noise and news. I said in the summer, I expected a quiet summer, and that’s actually what happened. I’ve been on holiday, came back, and started training. That’s it. Nothing to tell.
“Once the season goes on, I’m sure there will be conversations to be had. I just want to feel good, play good football, and this will come in the upcoming months. I don’t really feel the rush for the moment.”
The Belgian international was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the early part of the summer transfer window, but an offer didn’t arrive, and he has now entered the final year of his contract at the club, putting his future into doubt.

WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA
The Catalan side are now likely to look elsewhere but any moves will have to wait until the summer transfer window as they prioritise the registration of Dani Olmo currently.
Celtic’s faultless start to the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign continued on Saturday with a comfortable 2-0 win over Hearts at Parkhead.
The Hoops have now won all five of their matches in the division, without conceding a single goal, after goals from new signings Arne Engels and Luke McCowan.
Despite the win, there were some underwhelming performers on the pitch for the Scottish giants and one of them was centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi, who endured a difficult afternoon – losing 100% of his duels and leaving the pitch with no meaningful contributions.
FFC have urged Brendan Rodgers to finally ditch the Japan international from the starting XI and that would present Adam Idah with a chance to prove his worth.
Celtic splashed out a fee of ÂŁ8.5m, which could rise to ÂŁ9.5m with add-ons, to sign the Ireland international from Norwich City on a permanent deal, after his loan spell last term.
The Bhoys will be hoping that it turns out to be a profitable investment on the 23-year-old striker, as they have not always had the best of luck when spending big on new centre-forwards.
One number nine the club had a howler with initially was Patryk Klimala, who struggled at Parkhead before the club later hit the jackpot with him.
How much Celitc paid for Patryk Klimala
Back in January 2020, Celtic reportedly agreed a fee of around ÂŁ3.5m to sign the 21-year-old marksman from Polish outfit Jagiellonia BiaĹystok.
It was claimed at the time that Neil Lennon had identified the forward as a top target during the January transfer window, and that the Hoops had beaten Danish giants Copenhagen to his signature.
They activated a âŹ4m release clause in his contract with the Polish side, which allowed them to secure his services for ÂŁ3.5m, as Lennon viewed him as a strike partner for Odsonne Edouard.
Former Celtic striker Patryk Klimala.
He had come up through the youth ranks with Jagiellonia BiaĹystok, where he scored a stunning 17 goals in nine U19 matches, before emerging as a first-team option.
Klimala scored 11 goals in 50 senior outings for the club, including seven goals in 17 league games during the first half of the 2019/20 campaign, and this shows that Celtic were buying him for his potential.
The 21-year-old striker did not arrive at Parkhead with a proven track record of scoring goals and that made the ÂŁ3.5m spent on him a significant gamble by the Scottish giants.
Unfortunately, it was not a gamble that paid off for Celitc on the pitch as the Polish marksman went on to struggle throughout his time on the field for the Hoops.
Patryk Klimala's Celtic career
The young striker only made four appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys during the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, and failed to find the back of the net.
After his return of seven goals and three assists in 17 Extraklasa matches during the first half of the season, the forward did not record a single goal or assist in his two outings in the Scottish Premiership.
Former Celtic striker Patryk Klimala.
Klimala was then offered more opportunities to showcase his qualities in Glasgow during his first full season at the club, in the 2020/21 campaign.
The Poland U21 international played 24 matches in all competitions for the Hoops but only contributed with three and zero assists for the Bhoys.

As you can see in the table above, Klimala struggled at the top end of the pitch in the Premiership, with five ‘big chances’ missed and zero assists to go along with his three goals in 17 games.
The centre-forward only completed 68% of his attempted passes, completing 2.5 per game on average, as he struggled to handle the step up in quality in Scotland.
By April of that season, Celtic decided to part ways with the striker and, surprisingly, they were able to recoup all of the money they paid for him.
MLS side New York Red Bulls swooped in to sign the young attacker for a reported fee of $4.8m (ÂŁ3.5m), per Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, and the Hoops hit the jackpot with that sale, based on his decline since then.
Where Patryk Klimala is now
At the time of writing (16/09/2024), Klimala is on loan at Sydney FC in Australia, having joined them earlier this month, after being allowed to leave on a temporary basis by Slask Wroclaw.
Transfermarkt currently has his market value at a staggeringly low âŹ600k (ÂŁ500k), which is a significant drop-off from the ÂŁ3.5m Celtic sold him for, at the age of 26.
The Polish striker enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular, time in the Big Apple after his move from Glasgow, with a return of 14 goals and 11 assists in 63 matches in all competitions.
He then spent a year with Hapoel Beer Sheva, from January 2023 to January 2024, and only managed four goals in 23 appearances for the club before being allowed to join Slask Wroclaw on a free transfer at the start of this year.

As you can see in the table above, Klimala endured a frustrating time in the Polish top-flight for Wroclaw during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, with zero goals and four ‘big chances’ missed in 11 matches.
The 26-year-old former Celtic flop was then dropped down to the second team for the start of this season and scored four goals in four games in the fourth tier before being sent out on loan to Australia.
Overall, this shows that the Hoops hit the jackpot when they sold their big flop for a fee of ÂŁ3.5m as his career has gone downhill since moving on from Glasgow, as shown by his faltering form and his plummeting market value.

Olmo and Barca team-mate Pau Victor have been at the centre of a registration struggle, with the duo initially set to not play a part in the second half of the season due to the Blaugrana's financial problems. Rumours then circulated that Barca's stars would boycott Spain duty if Olmo was not picked – but midfielder Pedri has rejected such speculation.
