Arsene Wenger: I still have the appetite to get back into football

When Arsene Wenger announced he was going to step down from his role as Arsenal manager after 22 years in April 2018, it sent a shudder through the football club.

For the first time in over two decades, they were now searching for change. It was new territory for the Gunners but it was also unfamiliar for Wenger.

This was a man who had given so much of his time to football. Blood, sweat and tears had been sapped from the 69-year-old's body during a spell that included unparalleled domestic success in the club's history, but also a nine-year trophy drought.

The Gunners' last league title was won by the Invincibles. That provides you with all the evidence you need of the meteoric fall from grace the Gunners have had.

Yet he will always go down as one of the very best. His success may not have been sustained but the way in which he revolutionised Arsenal as a football club, business and brand will never be forgotten.

It's been a long year for Wenger. Since leaving the Gunners he's attended charity events and also offered his expertise in the form of punditry.

However, the former Arsenal boss still has the hunger to succeed in the game, insisting to Football FanCast: "I will get back into football for sure, whether that's as a manager or not.

"I think the appetite is still there. The desire is still there but I know the type of life I have in front of me. I have to decide that now," he said.

Wenger's attitude has always been unquestionable. He's one of the hardest working managers football has seen and it was his sheer will and determination that took him to so many major honours in north London.

But what was questioned was his ability to succeed later on in his tenure.

There was a cloud lingering over him in London for a considerable period and after finally taking the decision to step down in 2018, he insists he still made the right choice: "I was never too much concerned about how it would be taken but I did what I think was right," Wenger claimed when talking about the way he left Arsenal.

Arriving from Nagoya Grampus Eight as an unknown, he transformed the nature of English football leaving behind a lasting legacy. No one will forget just what he did for the club.

The ex-Monaco man hasn't found a job in management since leaving, but it surely won't be long before he gets back into things. "Initially I said I would manage straight away but now I have taken a little bit of distance and I came to the conclusion that I wanted to share what I learned in life," Wenger asserted.

The last year hasn't gone by without its troubles though. The stress of football management is monumental but just being away from the game he loves appears to have been difficult for the Frenchman.

"Like everyone in life you have competition with others and the competition with yourself. The toughest one was with myself," he stated.

There were also concerns that he'd find it a struggle to keep himself occupied. This is a man who has gone from dedicating every working hour and beyond to Arsenal. As a result, the year away was bound to feel incredibly different.

"I was in front of the unknown," Wenger explained. "You never know how you respond to that situation. I always worked, I never stopped. I started at 29 as a manager. That's 40 years."

Considering the tough times he endured in his later years in Islington, it will have been a welcome relief to have some time off. The job he would've had on his hands to restore Arsenal to its former glory means departing was probably a blessing for all parties too.

Yet after having time away, Wenger admitted: "It was enjoyable. It's not so much the stress. I am always under stress a little bit. It was a good feeling – I don't have to get up or to move. I have a life that is interesting."

His days now are spent playing sport, rather than coaching it. At his age, his attitude towards life is infectious.

But there's also been other activities to fill his time. "I do a lot of different sport. That occupies and I travelled a lot. I did a lot of game observation and charities. I did many conferences on football, on management, on motivation and on the meaning of life."

Where his future lies now is anyone's guess. Following a year away from the touchline, things have moved on. So has Wenger. But whatever job he next walks into will be fascinating to oversee.

Nottingham Forest would strengthen massively with the addition of O’Dowda

Nottingham Forest have a lot of work to do during the summer if they’re actually serious about at least getting into the play-offs. Surely they have to be, right? This kind of miserable stagnation just can’t go on much longer, or an Ipswich situation may indeed be on the cards.

Dramatic, perhaps, but the current state of play just cannot be the long-term strategy.

Indeed, having spent a good sum of money last summer, only to finish ninth, better recruitment needs to be conducted during this window if they’re to return to the top flight. Clearly, fans are really hoping that Martin O’Neill can prove he just had a shaky start as manager, rectifying by impressing this season.

So, with the right budget, there is faith in the team and the manager that great things can happen this season.

One player linked with Nottingham Forest who would be a tremendous coup is Callum O’Dowda, especially as he could replace the outgoing Diogo Goncalves.

O’Dowda, (who is valued at £1.8 million on Transfermarkt) has been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest among other Championship sides this summer after a good season for Bristol City. Martin O’Neill is said to be keen on recruiting a goalscoring midfielder, something O’Dowda definitely is considering he has four goals and five assists to his name this season.

Goals throughout the team can’t be a bad thing, right? Lewis Grabban certainly needs the help.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old himself is keen on a move to a bigger club, which Forest tick the box of being, given their rich history and determination to get back into the Premier League. So all things considered, it seems to be a move that would work out brilliantly for all involved and the potential to have Callum O’Dowda, Joao Carvalho and Joe Lolley in midfield screams of promotion back to the Premier League.

Do you think that Callum O’Dowda would make a good signing for Nottingham Forest? Let us know in the comments below!

Transfer Focus: McCarthy would be an excellent addition to Newcastle’s midfield

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

What’s the story?

According to TeamTALK, Rafael Benitez is keen to sign the midfielder this summer.

Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Mo Diame could all leave St. James’ Park, so the Magpies will need some reinforcements in the engine room.

The Magpies were linked with McCarthy back in 2017 during Benitez’s first full season with the club, and it appears the Spaniard is still a fan of the tough-tackling Toffee.

Shrewd signing

Newcastle fans’ reactions to the McCarthy links have been largely negative, due mainly to aspirations of bigger and better things under the potential new owners.

However, a takeover doesn’t mean every signing will be a big one, and McCarthy would be a very astute addition.

Aforementioned, Benitez is about to lose most of his midfield, and the Republic of Ireland international is tidy in possession, an excellent defensive shield and even pops up with the odd goal.

The 28 year-old appeared just once in the league last season, spending the entire campaign recovering from a gruesome leg injury, but with a full pre-season under his belt he will no doubt be one of Benitez’s hardest workers.

With just over 12 months left on his contract and valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt, McCarthy could inject some life into what is soon to be Newcastle’s weakest position, and all for an affordable price. The fans are dead wrong about this one.

Boom! The best quotes from Jurgen Klopp’s time at Liverpool

[ad_pod ]Jurgen Klopp has been at Liverpool for four years now and in that time, the German has conjured up some absolutely timeless quotes. The charismatic 51-year-old has captured the hearts of Liverpool fans, who practically worship the man after he delivered a sixth major European Cup – even before that, they adored him when he hadn’t won a single thing with the Reds. You can relive Liverpool’s Champions League celebrations in glorious 2D thanks to the guys at 442oons in the video below…Klopp has been a dream for those who regularly attend Liverpool’s press conferences, pre and post match, whilst he has come out with enough punchy one liners to fill an entire book; he really does offer great entertainment value. As a result of that, narrowing his best quotes down to just a handful is an extremely tough task, but nevertheless, it is one that we have attempted.Let’s take a look at some of the former Borussia Dortmund boss’ best quotes as manager of Liverpool…

“I am the normal one”

In just his first press conference as Liverpool boss, Klopp immediately produced the first of many amazing quotes.

When reminded that Jose Mourinho dubbed himself as ‘The Special One’ in his first Chelsea press conference, Klopp responded with: “I am the normal one, not the special one.”

It is a phrase that Liverpool have since attempted to have copyrighted.

Doubters to believers

One of the more significant messages that Klopp has tried to get across to the Liverpool fanbase since day one is to believe.

Again, on his very first day as manager at Anfield, Klopp spoke of how the fanbase has been living in the past and must believe in order to write a new chapter in the club’s history.

“We have to change from doubters to believers. Now.” It is a message that the supporters have taken on board, and they are definitely getting their just rewards.

The erotic translator

As previously mentioned, the German offers great entertainment value in his press conferences, and he definitely didn’t disappoint back in November.

When listening to a translator through earphones before his side took on PSG, Klopp exclaimed: “That is a very erotic voice by the way from the translator. Congratulations. Wow.”

Clearly, he wasn’t feeling the nerves of facing Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jr.

Boom

In what was one of the clearest indications that Klopp’s ‘heavy metal’ football was coming to fruition, a 3-0 demolition of Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City inside a raucous Anfield provoked a simple, but effective response from Klopp.

“The best word I can say to describe this is: Boom!” Enough said.

Where are the drinks?

Almost immediately after Klopp won his first ever Champions League title, the former Mainz boss had his priorities in line.

A brief cuddle with his No.1 Alisson Becker, who was phenomenal on the night, ended with Klopp sternly asking: “Where are the drinks?”

Get the man a Heineken.

Absolute legend: Aston Villa fans hail Hutton following announcement

[ad_pod ]

Alan Hutton has announced that he will be leaving Aston Villa when his contract expires at the end of this month.

Hutton has been with Villa since 2011 – making 202 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 34-year-old struggled with injury in the latter stages of the 2018-19 campaign but still made 34 appearances for Dean Smith’s side in all competitions.

The Scot was not included in either leg of Villa’s Championship playoff semi-final against West Bromwich Albion, though, or the final against Derby County.

Hutton has posted a message on his Instagram account thanking the fans for their support and revealed that he would be leaving Villa Park this summer.

And as expected, that led to a number of the club’s supporters paying tribute to the former Tottenham Hotspur defender, who will now be moving on to the next chapter of his career.

Role model: Everton already have the perfect tutor for Moise Kean in Richarlison

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, Everton have made contract with Juventus over the availability of young forward Moise Kean.

The 19-year-old has rapidly become one of Europe’s most exciting youngsters after enjoying a breakthrough year with the Turin-based giants last term, helping them win yet another Serie A title with an impressive six goals in just five league starts.

Despite being a fully fledged Italian international already, Kean has been helping the Under-21 side at the European Championships this summer and has done so impressively.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

Should he arrive at Goodison Park, Kean needn’t be nervous in coming to the Premier League as a young forward, for his would-be teammate Richarlison has been through it all already.

The Brazilian international arrived on these shores as an £11.5m purchase from Fluminense at just 20 years of age, and scored five goals in his first season for Watford.

However, all five came in his first 12 outings for the Hornets before he tailed off, and he later revealed that he held back from giving 100% in training as he felt his legs were going to ‘explode’.

Despite that severe drop in form, Marco Silva – the manager who signed him for Watford – parted with an initial £35m to bring the versatile forward to his new club Everton, where he has gone from strength to strength.

Richarlison hit 13 league goals in his first season for the Toffees, looking visibly stronger, more durable and more confident in just his second campaign in England.

Kean has already proved that he is a strong character after having to deal with severe racial issues whilst playing in Italy last season.

A number of players take time to settle in England from a footballing point of view, however, and whilst he seems to have the mental strength to succeed, Richarlison’s similar experience will help Kean overcome any stagnating periods on the field.

Lacazette enjoying his holiday playing basketball with friends

[ad_pod ]

Now that the Premier League season is long behind us, the players can finally unwind and step away from the football pitch to do something else instead.

Alexandre Lacazette has been doing exactly that, if his latest

/By3ETf9nyw4/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram snaps are anything to go by, and was seen playing basketball in his time off. He recently posted a video on social media giving us a glimpse of what’s been going on on the court.

Seeing how the 28-year-old forward has had a pretty decent season in the Arsenal shirt, scoring 13 goals and assisting a further 12, a little relaxation and fun away from the “office” could be just what the good doctor prescribed.

Unfortunately, his tally wasn’t enough to lead the Gunners to any trophies last season but the Europa League final was definitely a step in the right direction.

Tottenham fans react positively to Robert Skov speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to El Desmarque, via Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur have contacted Copenhagen to discuss a potential move for Danish attacker Robert Skov in this summer’s transfer window.

Skov was in fine form for his club during the 2018-19 campaign – scoring 32 times and registering 10 assists in 48 appearances in all competitions.

When considering that Skov largely plays as a winger and not a striker, those numbers are incredible at any level of football.

According to El Desmarque, via Sport Witness, Tottenham, alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers, have registered their interest.

And a number of Spurs fans have reacted positively to the news that their club could bring Skov to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

It has been a slow window for Mauricio Pochettino’s side thus far. However, Skov’s arrival would seemingly go down well with the fanbase when considering their reaction on social media.

Man City’s Maguire pursuit a symptom of major Premier League problem

[ad_pod ]

Harry Maguire appears set to move to Manchester City this summer, per The Mirror.

The Leicester City defender, now an England cult hero, has been the subject of a tug-of-war between City and bitter rivals Manchester United and it is not difficult to see why. This is a no-nonsense centre-back with excellent positional sense, ball playing prowess and a genuinely brilliant heading ability. He is a solid tackler, too.

And yet, recent reports suggest that he could leave for £80m. That’s not a typo. The number is real and, were City to match it, he would complete a transfer for the same price that Real Madrid once paid to secure Cristiano Ronaldo, then the best footballer in the world.

This is not a one-off, either. City have been here before with English talent.

Soccer Football – World Cup – Quarter Final – Sweden vs England – Samara Arena, Samara, Russia – July 7, 2018 England’s Harry Maguire celebrates after the match REUTERS/Lee Smith

John Stones, Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker are all among the most expensive transfers of all time.

And this speaks to a greater issue. English talent has for too long been overpriced but now it appears that we are reaching the peak of the fad. Maguire is a fine defender and his stock rose considerably after the 2018 World Cup, when he was a marvel in Gareth Southgate’s England team, but the price is, quite simply, insane.

Take Matthijs De Ligt as the counterpoint. The Netherlands international emerged as one of the most coveted defenders in the world during Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals, a player of impeccable timing and with a ceiling higher than many of his contemporaries. He could yet be the best defender in the world. He would cost around £62m.

Who’s doing these sums?

Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Now, of course, an English player has not been the most expensive in the world since 1996, when Newcastle United, in more stable times, paid £15m for Alan Shearer. Prior to that, it was Jackie Sewell, in 1951, moving from Notts County to Sheffield Wednesday for £34,500. In today’s money, that’s £1m.

Since then, prices have mushroomed and we’re at the point where a £100m transfer barely raises an eyebrow.

But the inflation at the top has trickled down and led to the misguided belief that non-elite players can be worth it too.

Maguire is a prime example, and it affects other deals too.

Look at City’s move to sign Walker from Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs knew what they had. This was an elite full-back who was being courted by the richest club in the land. After months of negotiations with Daniel Levy City paid an initial £45m that could rise to over £50m. As a result, Monaco, when negotiating the sale of Benjamin Mendy to the Etihad Stadium, demanded the same figure. They got it because City could afford it.

But, really, it doesn’t make sense. Of course, buying British talent can lead to favourable views from fans. Instead of going out and buying the best talent on the continent, keeping it on these shores – as City have strived to do where possible – can lead to more engagement from supporters who are watching their countrymen do their team proud.

Yet to get them, now, one has to pay through the nose. Compare and contrast. Declan Rice at West Ham would cost around £100m to buy this summer, Football FanCast understands.

Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele, a player further along in his development, could move to Spurs for £66.6m.

Jack Grealish, a player who has never played for the England senior team and played in the Championship last season, has a £60m release clause in his contract.

Hakim Ziyech, the attacking midfielder who was integral as Ajax reached the Champions League semis, is reportedly available for £25m.

Remember too, that Jordan Pickford, at Everton, became the most expensive British goalkeeper of all time when he moved from Sunderland for a deal that could be worth £30m. Sunderland had just been relegated.

Maguire, then, is not the cause of this sickness. One actually feels that it is deals by foreign clubs that have inflated the market to the point of farce – Neymar, Philippe Coutinho and Gareth Bale are perhaps the chief instigators – but Premier League clubs are now clawing each other’s eyes out as they look to take advantage.

If Maguire is now worth £80m, one has to wonder the price for the very best attacking English players, the likes of Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

To City, of course, he may well be worth it. Maguire could come in, sign a five-year contract, and win five Premier League titles, helping the club to countless clean sheets. Perhaps he’d be able to repay the investment on the pitch.

Or maybe, just maybe, this is a sign that the Premier League has lost its grip on reality, and on its calculator.

Crystal Palace fans on Twitter unimpressed with Charlie Austin speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Crystal Palace want to keep in-demand Southampton striker Charlie Austin in the Premier League next season, and Eagles fans are thoroughly unimpressed with the rumour.

The Sun report that the south London outfit, along with Aston Villa, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion, all want to sign the 29-year-old centre-forward, with Saints deciding the time has come this summer for him to leave St Mary’s.

Roy Hodgson’s men certainly look to be in need of a new striker given their only options right now are the goal-shy Christian Benteke, the injury-prone Connor Wickham and Alexander Sorloth, with Michy Batshuayi and Jordan Ayew returning to parent clubs Chelsea and Swansea City respectively following loan spells in 2018/19.

Austin may have been a prolific goalscorer for QPR previously, but he has struggled to replicate that form on the south coast with 20 goals in 81 appearances in all competitions – and with injuries often hampering him.

Even when fit under Ralph Hasenhuttl, he has often found himself behind the likes of Danny Ings, Shane Long and Michael Obafemi in the pecking order, mainly due to him not being the quickest and therefore not fitting into the high-pressing style the Austrian manager wants.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

Crystal Palace supporters on Twitter clearly aren’t happy with the link when you look at their comments, with one saying “Charlie Austin would be a great signing. If it was 2015”, and another saying “5 years too late”.
