Pakistan spinners sink South Africa

A seemingly below-par score was defended for the second time in the series as Pakistan out-spun and out-thought South Africa to level the rubber

The Report by Firdose Moonda01-Nov-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSouth Africa had no answer to Pakistan’s spinners•AFP

A seemingly below-par score was defended for the second time in the series as Pakistan out-spun and out-thought South Africa to level the rubber. Mohammad Irfan continued to impress with his pace while Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez shared six wickets among them on a surface which facilitated more turn than expected and against a line-up whose technical weaknesses against the art were exposed yet again. In a battle of the two attacks, South Africa’s would have been satisfied with their work when they limited Pakistan to a total below the first-innings average of 228. Their seamers did the job through Morne Morkel, who generated extra bounce and used the short ball well, and Ryan McLaren, whose changes of pace worked. Those two took seven wickets together and conceded 72 runs in the 20 overs they bowled. Their efforts went in vain as the batsmen collapsed, with no-one managing a score over 30.Colin Ingram’s miserable run continued. If not for overthrows, his streak of three ducks from three internationals would have extended to four. He was bowled by a Sohail Tanvir inswinger and will certainly be replaced in the line-up by Hashim Amla, who will be back from the next game.Graeme Smith and JP Duminy spent 74 balls grafting for 36 runs to put South Africa on track. Duminy was the more comfortable, cutting and driving with relative ease while Smith struggled. Pakistan reviewed an lbw appeal against the former captain when he was on 10 but the umpire’s call stood. He persisted with moving across his stumps to defend, though, and was bowled when he missed the sweep. Five balls later, Duminy was caught at slip off Irfan to expose South Africa’s soft middle-order.Ajmal generated sharp turn and with his sublime control, it seemed a wicket would fall off every ball. Faf du Plessis edged one which fell short off slip, AB de Villiers had an lbw appeal turned down – which replays showed should have been given out – and almost offered Ajmal a return catch. For five and half overs, with Ajmal and Irfan in operation, Pakistan gave away only 17 runs. South Africa were strangled and by the time Afridi was brought on, at the start of the 23rd over, their frustration had reached breaking point.Du Plessis got on the back foot to defend a flipper but was trapped on the pad with Afridi’s first ball. By the time he wanted to review, it was too late although it would have been wasted because Hawk-Eye revealed he was as out. In Afridi’s next over, de Villiers tried to cut and was caught behind. At 73 for 5, it was only a matter of time before South Africa unraveled.Wayne Parnell and Ryan McLaren put on 35, South Africa’s second-highest partnership, but when Irfan, whose ability to pitch it up continues to earn him praise, had Parnell caught behind, South Africa were waiting to be finished off. Ajmal became the joint highest ODI wicket-taker of the year when Lonwabo Tsotsobe was given out lbw and Afridi took the final wicket to complete a second consecutive three-wicket haul.In the end it seemed it was Pakistan, rather than South Africa, who could lay claim to de Villiers assertion that only four wickets were needed to dent their opposition. De Villiers’ bold statement was justified, though, when Pakistan were batting, because their last six put on just 92 runs in 21 overs. After Ahmed Shehzad, who scored his third consecutive ODI fifty, was dismissed, Pakistan struggled against the discipline of the South Africa attack. The bowlers set the tone in the first two overs, which ended with Nasir Jamshed, for the second time in the series, top edging an attempted pull. Lonwabo Tsotsobe completed a well-judged catch at fine leg to enhance his opening passage of play in which he also troubled Hafeez. On seeing the left-armer cause problems, de Villiers introduced Wayne Parnell at the other end but the hero from the first match could not find his length and offered Pakistan relief.Shehzad and Hafeez took 32 runs off the last four overs of the Powerplay to set Pakistan up. No sooner had they done that when Hafeez stepped out against Ryan McLaren and inside-edged a back of a length ball onto his own stumps. His departure forced Shehzad to go back into his shell but he slowly emerged from it with Misbah-ul-Haq at his side. Misbah showed more impatience than usual, even after Shehzad has raised his bat to the only half-century of the match, and would have trusted his younger partner to bat for a while longer.Shehzad, though, went soon after Misbah, offering the simplest of return catches to Imran Tahir to spark Pakistan’s slump. After he was dismissed, the two Umar’s – Amin and Akmal – were together for 51 balls in which they only managed 31 runs. South Africa’s bowlers gave away very little so that when McLaren brought his change of pace to the fore, they were victims of it.Misbah predicted turn would be a factor later in the match and he was proved correct. The teams have four days between fixtures to regroup, and South Africa will want to take advantage of Gary Kirsten’s presence as their batting consultant before the third game.

New Zealand bank on familiarity with Pallekele

New Zealand acting captain Kyle Mills has banked on his side’s batting form, and their experience in Pallekele ahead of New Zealand’s first T20 against Sri Lanka

‘We bat pretty deep so we’ve got full confidence in our batting order’ – Mills•AFP

New Zealand acting captain Kyle Mills has banked on his side’s batting form, and their experience in Pallekele ahead of New Zealand’s first T20 against Sri Lanka.New Zealand have been the most frequent international visitors to the venue, having played four ODIs and six T20s there since the stadium debuted in 2010. They have never beaten Sri Lanka in any format in Pallekele, but Mills suggested the ground held few surprises for his side, particularly after they had played here at a similar time last year.”We have played a reasonable amount of cricket here. In the last T20 World Cup we had a few games here and quite a few ODI games as well. We know it swings around at night time. When we played Pakistan here Ross Taylor got a big hundred. We batted first got a decent score and it swung around at night. If the environmental conditions are right – if it’s quite humid – it will possibly swing around again.”New Zealand’s batting has rescued the team in both wins on their subcontinent trip, and Mills affirmed his batsmen’s ability to transform a match in a short space of time. Nathan McCullum has been in particularly impressive form in the series, having hit 32 off 9 balls to pull off an unlikely win in Hambantota, while others in the lower middle order have also produced. New Zealand hit 204 for 5 in their last T20, in Bangladesh.”The late order guys have been in pretty good form the whole way through. The scores we were able to manage in the series here and also in Bangladesh when we scored 200 in a T20 game and 300 in a 50-over game was really good. McCullum’s been in good form the whole way through and he had a pretty good Champions league and A series in Sri Lanka. We bat pretty deep so we’ve got full confidence in our batting order. Hopefully the top order can score a few more runs.”Mills said that New Zealand will also use this series to tune-up ahead of the World T20 in Bangladesh. They have four scheduled T20s before the tournament – including two against West Indies – and he relished the chance to develop depth in similar conditions to those they will encounter in March.”We have already started preparing for the World T20. You could see that over the last couple of months, with the introduction of some young players. Some of them have really stood up, so with the T20 games remaining between now and the World Cup, you see those guys come to the forefront. Our whole objective is to find a squad to try and win the tournament.”

O provável time deve ter: Weverton; Marcos Rocha, Antonio Carlos, Edu Dracena e Diogo Barbosa; Thiago Santos, Moisés e Ricardo Goulart; Hyoran, Carlos Eduardo e Arthur Cabral.

Cricket in Bangladesh dependent on political stability

The ACC’s decision to retain February’s Asia Cup in Bangladesh has been based on the government’s promise of providing state-level security during all three major international cricket events from mid-January to early April

New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh was not affected too much by the political blockades, and the players were provided with tight security•Associated Press

The ACC’s decision to retain February’s Asia Cup in Bangladesh has been based on the government’s promise of providing state-level security during all three major international cricket events from mid-January to early April. The BCB has, however, confirmed that they didn’t give any political guarantees at the ACC meeting in Colombo, but it would be improbable to assure a stable environment in the country given the volatile political climate. It is understood that the Asia Cup decision will be vital in convincing Sri Lanka Cricket to go through with their tour of Bangladesh in mid-January, while the BCB would have some strength in convincing other board members when the matter of security comes up for the World Twenty20s in March and April.”At the meeting, we told the ACC board members that we will provide state-level security for the teams,” BCB’s acting CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury told ESPNcricinfo. “They were convinced. There was no talk of any alternate venues. We understand that Bangladesh will be the host of the Asia Cup.”The news comes a day before Bangladesh holds general elections, which are being staged against the backdrop of long-running nationwide violence and are being boycotted by the main opposition parties. The elections, by themselves, are not expected to restore peace in the country and the staging of two other cricket events – a bilateral series against Sri Lanka later this month and the World Twenty20 in mid-March – will be dependent on how much the political forces agree to pull together for those specific time periods. The Bangladesh Cricket Board is the direct organiser of the Sri Lanka series while the Asian Cricket Council and the ICC are in charge of the Asia Cup and the World Twenty20s. The BCB has formed local organising committees for the two marquee events, including a security team. Senior officials of the BCB held a string of meetings with relevant ministries and security agencies, and put together a security report that was presented at the ACC meeting.According to sources, the BCB will commit to a three-tiered security detail like the one implemented during the 2011 World Cup. It will make sure all three events have the same levels of security detail, with more involvement of the various security forces at the three World Twenty20 venues.”The ICC, ACC and SLC will get the same security report, because we are committing to foolproof security for all these events. We have discussed the matter with security agencies in the country, including the Army,” a BCB official, requesting anonymity, told ESPNcricinfo.Ahead of their four-week tour to Bangladesh in October-November last year, New Zealand Cricket had sent a security assessment team in late August. During the series, there was a political demonstration, and strikes, but the tour went on. Only once did New Zealand stay away from training in Dhaka, on the day of a strike. The tour went off peacefully but there was tight security around the players. While violence has dissipated only slightly in the first few days of January, the opposition party’s anti-election and anti-government campaign has not stopped. Blockades and strikes have continued, including a 24-hour strike on the day of the election. Normal life in Bangladesh has been disrupted, as is the case every time there is political violence. It is believed that the first week after the elections, particularly the tone of the ruling Awami League and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, will have a bearing on the country’s immediate future. There is an expectation among political analysts and international relation experts here that if the tone from the political parties does not soften or take a conciliatory turn, cricket would suffer. The political movement in Bangladesh, over the past three months has seen consecutive days of blockades. The political strikes and blockades enforced by the opposition parties have amounted to 23 days, while the government itself locked down the capital for two days. There have been nearly 150 deaths due to political violence since late October, and violence has damaged Bangladesh’s international image.Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, a Dhaka-based international relations expert, stated that international players have always been taken care of. He believes that the government has to ensure safety for fans, so that the environment around the matches remains stable. He, however, said that political agitation was unlikely to make way for anyone or anything in Bangladesh.”The players, historically, have never been targeted,” Imtiaz said. “But then we must make sure that the environment is conducive for the public to watch the matches. There might be a [political strike] during one of the matches, for example.”There has, however, already been one dent. The West Indies Under-19 team’s pullout in mid-December has clearly undermined Bangladesh. The BCB tried hard to convince the visitors’ team management to stay back and shift all matches to Dhaka but that didn’t work. Instead, it has created fresh doubt in the minds of cricket officials around the world.
