The breakaway American Cricket Foundation has made public a draft constitution as its challenge to the USA Cricket Association gains momentum

Peter Della Penna23-Jan-2013The breakaway American Cricket Foundation has made public a draft constitution for review on its web site as it continues its gradual growth towards mounting a challenge against the USA Cricket Association to become the officially recognised governing body for cricket in America by the ICC.The proposed constitution includes key differences from USACA’s method of governance such as term limits and the offer of membership to individual players and clubs separate from leagues.”It has long been our goal to provide US Cricket with a selfless platform that will unite all cricket constituencies through a universal appeal that can accelerate US cricket development,” Gangaram Singh, coordinator of the ACF constitution committee, said in an ACF press release.The proposed term limits would cap any ACF board member’s service at a maximum of eight consecutive years. Term limits were suggested as an amendment to the USACA Constitution by several candidates ahead of the USACA general election in April. USACA President Gladstone Dainty, who won re-election in April, has been in that role since 2003. In Dainty’s time as USACA president, USACA has twice been suspended by the ICC during periods marked by internal struggles and poor governance.The offer to individual players and clubs of membership, and potentially voting privileges with it, would be a major shift from the USACA administration. Currently, USACA voting rights are offered to member leagues only, which was a source of controversy at the April elections when 32 out of the 47 member leagues were disenfranchised. As a result, it only took a majority of eight votes to decide the winner for each race.ACF on the other hand seems determined to offer membership to as many constituents as possible as part of its mission of inclusion. While member leagues would vote for six of the 11 director positions on the ACF board of directors, the proposed constitution states that all individual players and clubs would be eligible to vote for other at-large director positions on the board so that every cricketer would have a legitimate say in electing their representatives. The initial proposal is for five player votes to be equivalent to one member club vote in any election for the at-large directors.Separate from the proposed ACF board of directors, the constitution also calls for the formation of an advisory and judicial committee comprised mainly of player representatives. The lack of any player representation in USACA committees has been a stumbling block preventing them from gaining recognition from the United States Olympic Committee. The ACF is understood to be aggressively pursuing USOC recognition which would do a great deal to legitimise their efforts.While the immediate prospects of the ACF being recognized by the ICC are slim, gaining and maintaining USOC recognition could be valuable down the road for the ACF if Twenty20 cricket is eventually introduced into the Olympic program. Having USOC recognition could mean the ACF gets to select a US representative side for the Olympics and not USACA. It would be a solid bargaining chip to wave in front of the ICC in an attempt to usurp USACA’s status as the ICC’s officially recognized governing body.If the majority of the 32 disenfranchised leagues from the USACA general election in April formally become members of ACF, it would also mean they would have a bigger membership base than USACA. It could allow them to pose an argument to the ICC that they are representative of a wider number of constituents in the USA than USACA. In a lawsuit filed by former USACA Executive Secretary Kenwyn Williams, court documents show an affidavit filed by Dainty in which he states that there are currently 12 member leagues in USACA.If the ACF continues on the path of growth and engages in a struggle with USACA over ICC recognition, it could lead to another ICC suspension for US Cricket.USA was locked out of international cricket in 2005 due to poor governance after the Council of League Presidents got into a legal battle with USACA over the 2005 USACA election results. At the time, USA was scheduled to participate in the ICC Intercontinental Cup first-class cricket tournament for Associates after having done so in 2004 but USA was removed from the 2005 edition during suspension and hasn’t participated since.In 2006, the entity known as Major League Cricket petitioned the ICC to become the recognised governing body of cricket in the USA to replace USACA. MLC’s attempts at recognition were eventually rebuffed. USACA was suspended again in 2007 after failing to ratify a constitution. They were scheduled to participate in ICC World Cricket League Division Three that year, but were instead demoted to Division Five due to suspension. USA had qualified and played in the ICC Champions Trophy as recently as 2004 but they have struggled to climb back up the Associate ranks ever since they were readmitted into international cricket in 2008.The ACF has its origins in the aftermath of the controversial USACA general elections in April 2012 in which 32 out of the 47 USACA member leagues were deemed ineligible by the incumbent USACA board ahead of the election following a USACA compliance review. In May, a group of league presidents from among the 32 disenfranchised leagues banded together to declare their intent to discontinue their membership in USACA and form a new rival organisation called Cricket America before changing their name to the American Cricket Federation.In October, the ACF held their inaugural Twenty20 National Championship in Los Angeles which was won by the Southern California Cricket Association, who defeated the Cricket League of New Jersey in the final. The tournament featured 15 games across three days all played on turf wickets at Woodley Park. By comparison, USACA only managed to schedule a single national tournament match in 2012, a 50-over contest in Florida on November 11. Neither the ACF nor USACA have set any domestic tournament dates for 2013.

South Africa stand on the cusp of their most successful period under Graeme Smith, who was keen to finish the summer on a winning note

The last time Graeme Smith captained South Africa in a dead rubber, the team had just won a series in Australia. Little else mattered but Smith batted with a broken hand to try to stave off defeat in the third Test even though it had no bearing on the bigger picture.One of the most marked differences between the current South African side and the one of 2008-9 is that closing the deal at the earliest opportunity is more important to this lot. “We’ve been through some growth periods. Certain things didn’t work then as they are now,” Smith said. “Systems in the team are running a lot better and some processes are a lot more professional. We’ve taken that step that we were searching for.”The focus on being more clinical has paid off. South Africa stand on the cusp of their most successful period under Smith. Never before under Smith’s captaincy have South Africa won all the Test matches in a home summer as they could with victory in Centurion. Never before have they won five in a row as they have now and never before have they been as determined to keep the intensity up.”Being mentally sharp is going to the challenge but I think we will be,” Smith said. “The energy at training was good and we would love to finish our summer of Test cricket on a positive note.”A whitewash will be nothing more than a show of dominance but it is important in establishing themselves as ruthless, especially since South Africa disappear from the Test circuit after this match. Attention will fall on India’s series against Australia and the Ashes and the No.1 ranked side in the world will have to wait until October before they play again.The break in the schedule may rob South Africa of the chance to play at their peak but that is something no-one can control. They would have featured sooner had the July-August tour to Sri Lanka not been turned into a limited-overs only affair and Smith did not show too much disappointment at that. “We would love to have carried on the momentum we’ve started and to keep playing and playing well but when you’ve played for a long time you deal with things as they come.”Smith was even able to spot a positive in the long break before facing Pakistan in UAE in October. South Africa will use the Centurion Test to study their opposition closely in preparation for their return clash. “When we start playing again later in the year there won’t be any time to find our feet again. Hopefully the confidence will be as strong as it is now. The squad is performing well as a group. We’ve got some highly skilled players. Hopefully we can pick up from that.”Growing that legacy is the immediate goal and winning in Centurion will go some way to realising that. It is also the chance for Smith to notch up another achievement. Should South Africa emerge victorious, Smith will have his 50th victory as Test captain, something no other leader has achieved. At Newlands he overtook Allan Border as the captain with the most Test victories and at the Wanderers, he became the only person to captain a team 100 times in Test cricket.The accolades are so regular, Smith doesn’t have the words to describe what they mean to him anymore, except to say he wants to keep going. “I’m running out of things to say. I am looking forward to that number growing even more. It’s a great achievement for me and the guys that I have played with.Hopefully when I reflect back on this one day I can say that as a team we did ourselves proud and not that we left ourselves short. I will be extremely proud to saying I could take South Africa to No.1 in the world and that we could stay there.”

سلوت انضم إلى فينورد في عام 2021، بعد أن بدأ مسيرته التدريبية في إي زد الكمار، مما جعله يتصدر المرشحين لخلافة كونتي في توتنها.

توتنهام يحتاج للفوز على ليدز في المباراة الأخيرة المهدد بالهبوط، منتظرًا تعثر أستون فيلا أمام برايتون، وفي حالة لم يحدث ذلك، سيغيب سبيرز عن البطولات الأوروبية للمرة الأولى منذ موسم 2008-2009.

Former Rajasthan fast bowler and selector Shamsher Singh, 40, died of a heart attack on Thursday. Shamsher made his debut for Rajasthan in the 1992-93 season and played his last first-class match in 2002. He took 55 wickets in 33 first-class games and 35 wickets in 26 List A matches, the last of which he played in 2001.Originally from Hisar in Haryana, Shamsher moved to Jaipur as a child, worked hard as a cricketer and never lost his passion. As part of the Rajasthan selection panel for the last few years, Shamsher encouraged the inclusion of youth, as well as talented fast bowlers like Rituraj Singh.He was instrumental in convincing the Rajasthan Cricket Associaton (RCA) to appoint former South Africa fast bowler Meryck Pringle as the fast bowling coach in 2011, when Rajasthan successfully defended their Ranji Trophy title. Shamsher was also the manager of the Rajasthan Royals team that won the IPL in 2008. His last job was as the manager of the Central Zone team in the Deodhar Trophy.Being a former player, Shamsher always empathised with players and coaches and addressed their concerns. For Rituraj, one of Rajasthan’s upcoming fast bowlers, Shamsher was an administrator who always guided a player to be a good sportsperson and human being. Last year, during Rajasthan’s fifth league match in the Ranji Trophy, Rituraj had a Grade 1 tear in his hamstring. Shamsher made sure the youngster’s rehabilitation was well taken care of by the RCA.”He was the first selector who came up to me and spoke genuinely after I had picked up an injury midway against Gujarat. I was not sure if the injury would heal in time for me to bounce back,” Rituraj said.” He told me not to worry and he assured me I would be fit to play the next match. That is the kind of confidence you want a selector to instill in a player.”One of the biggest positives Rituraj, and his fast bowling partner Aniket Choudhary, recount about Shamsher was his constant encouragement to dream big. “He was a good motivator. He was a selector who had a real good knowledge about cricket,” Rituraj said.For Choudhary, Shamsher was , a big brother and mentor. He was one of the last people to speak to Shamsher, over video chat. While Choudhary was struggling and working hard to rise above district-level cricket in Rajasthan, Shamsher fast-tracked his progress into the Ranji squad.”I know him from the last two years. I was a student at his Jaipur Cricket Academy,” Choudhary. “He spotted me once and told me that he would help me work with good coaches like Meyrick Pringle. I cannot thank him enough that he got a former international bowler like Pringle to work hard with me and that helped me make my first-class debut in the Irani Trophy two years back.”My life changed completely after I joined his academy. I always believed I would end up playing Ranji only, but after listening to him I have now grown confident that I can aspire to play for India.”Pringle did not believe the news when the academy officials called him. “I even called his phone and there was no answer,” said Pringle, who spoke to Shamsher on Thursday. “It is incredible.”Pringle, Rituraj and Choudhary were aware Shamsher was excited about his biggest dream: opening a cricket academy in Jaipur, where he had plans to invite the likes of Glenn McGrath to coach youngsters. “He was a guy who was interested in picking guys from out of the blue and helping them aspire to perform for not only the state but also the country,” Rituraj said. “That was his target.”For Pankaj, Shamsher was a forward-thinking administrator. “He wanted to bring the professional culture from overseas to Rajasthan. His academy was part of that project. He wanted us to train with the best coaches, trainers and physios. I don’t know anyone else who can now work as hard as he did and achieve that dream.”Pringle said Shamsher was an “extremely positive guy”. “Whenever he spoke cricket, you wanted to actually listen. What he achieved at the first-class level he wanted to give back to Indian cricket through his academy.”The popularity of Shamsher extended beyond Rajasthan’s Ranji team. “Bobby, as Shamsher was known, played an extremely important role in helping the international and domestic players as our team manager, which paved way for a harmonious team atmoshphere,” Rajasthan Royals’ chief executive Raghu Iyer said. Shamsher is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
