Pattinson hopes to play in tri-series

The fast bowler James Pattinson is confident he will be fit to play in the second half of the Commonwealth Bank Series

The fast bowler James Pattinson is confident he will be fit to play in the second half of the Commonwealth Bank Series. Pattinson is recovering from a foot injury that ruled him out of the final two Tests against India after he made an outstanding start to his Test career, with 25 wickets at an average of 18.12 in his first four matches in the baggy green. After the Sydney Test, scans showed Pattinson had the early signs of stress fractures in his left foot and he was declared unfit for the rest of the Test series. However, Pattinson now believes he will be able to return in time for the end of the triangular one-day series, which would also make him available for the tour of the West Indies that follows.”My recovery is going really well at the moment,” Pattinson said on the Cricket Australia website. “I’m about three weeks away from coming back. My foot is feeling good. I’m back running and doing some bowling. I’ll hopefully be back for the one-day international series about halfway through it, about the fifth one-dayer and then hopefully we can get into the finals and I’ll be right for them.”Australia’s fifth match in the series is against India in Brisbane on February 19, but even if Pattinson does not come up for that game he could be in the mix for the last few matches and the finals, which are scheduled for the first week of March. That Pattinson’s injury does not appear to be long-term is good news for an Australia side already missing the vice-captain Shane Watson and the fast man Pat Cummins.Cummins has been all but ruled out of the Australian summer due to a heel injury but he believes he could be fit for the Caribbean tour in March. Watson has been told not to rush back too soon and he said earlier this week that his calf injury was proving difficult to shake, and at this stage there is no clear time-frame for his return.

Panesar place under threat for second Test

Monty Panesar could find himself back on the sidelines as England try to balance their side in their attempt to level the series against Sri Lanka

Monty Panesar bowled far from poorly in Galle but did not pose the same threat as he had done against Pakistan in the UAE•AFP

Little more than two months after his successful return to Test cricket, Monty Panesar could find himself back on the sidelines as England try to balance their side in their attempt to level the series against Sri Lanka. The injury that has forced Stuart Broad to leave the tour ahead of the second Test in Colombo has created another selection dilemma because his likely replacement, Steven Finn, lacks his batting strength while Tim Bresnan, the other quick bowler in the squad, has not had enough cricket in recent months to be fielded as one of a two-man pace attack.Jonathan Trott admitted it would not be a simple decision for the selectors. “Finny has been working hard on his batting so we should give him some credit,” he said. “But obviously Stuart is very good as a bowling allrounder and adds that dynamic to the team.”Panesar bowled far from poorly in Galle but did not pose the same threat as he had done against Pakistan in the UAE. That was partly because the Sri Lankans, especially Mahela Jayawardene, made a conscious effort to lead with their bat rather than the pad so limiting the likelihood of lbws.In the first innings, Panesar did a good holding job – conceding less than two an over – but had to wait until midway through Sri Lanka’s second innings to claim a wicket and ended with 2 for 59.Rangana Herath, Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner, by comparison had career-best match figures of 12 for 171 and showed the value of variations in pace and flight whereas Panesar’s mode of attack was more predictable. Graeme Swann, meanwhile, starred in the second innings with 6 for 82 to cement his standing as England’s lead spinner.Panesar also did himself no favours with a poor fielding display when he dropped Jayawardene twice in consecutive overs during the latter stages of his 180. The first, a top-edged hook to fine leg, came out of a low sun and was less simple than it appeared but the second, which looped to him at mid-on, was an embarrassing drop. During training on Sunday, Panesar held the half-dozen catches given by Richard Halsall, the assistant coach, but nothing can replicate the pressure of a match situation.Samit Patel’s Test debut in Galle amounted to 11 runs and two wickets and the suggestion that he should retain his place ahead of the specialist bowler sounds at odds with the needs of England who must win to level the series therefore making 20 wickets a priority. However, taking 20 wickets has not been their problem this year; scoring runs has.If Patel was omitted in favour of Bresnan it would leave Graeme Swann at No. 8 followed by three bowlers – Finn, Panesar and James Anderson – who do not offer a huge amount with the bat. There is one other option which involves bringing in Ravi Bopara as a specialist batsman and playing four frontline bowlers if Bopara’s batting is viewed as substantially superior to Patel’s. But England’s need for a fifth bowler in these conditions has not disappeared. There were few clues during England’s net session on Sunday although Kevin Pietersen did bowl more than he often does on practice days. The P Sara Oval groundsman, NS Silva, has said he thinks the match will go five days but England have not achieved that on their recent travels. There have been 11 results from the 15 Tests played at the venue, the last of which was in August 2010, when India chased down 257. Suraj Randiv took nine wickets in that match and spin has a good record at the ground. That still might not be enough for Panesar.

Rodrigo Lindoso fez o gol salvador.

O desenho do jogo

Jean havia recebido cartão amarelo no primeiro tempo.

Leandro Donizete quase arrumou briga. Luan e Gilson discutiram e foram expulsos.

Onions impresses before Dexter shows his fight

Graham Onions removed Andrew Strauss for a duck but Neil Dexter led a Middlesex fightback at Lord’s

Naturally, the focus of most attention here was Andrew Strauss, a captain in need of runs, even in his own analysis. Yet his failure overshadowed the success of the other captain who finds himself in the same rocky boat.Unlike Strauss, Neil Dexter was not out second ball. Indeed he was not out at all, even though he had some luck, and to be unbeaten on 65 at the end of a perilous, if abbreviated day for batting was as much a triumph of note as Strauss’s short innings was a headline-making misfortune.Given that the England captain appeared and disappeared while many in the ground were not settled in their vantage points, the details need not be lingered over for long. As Graham Onions steamed in with intent from the Pavilion End he shouldered arms to the first ball, wisely enough, but the second gave him no such option, swinging in the air and then nipping back off the pitch to beat the left-hander’s tentative push and connect with the top part of off stump. It doesn’t matter that much for Strauss. Weather permitting, he will have five more chances to score some Championship runs before the first Test against the West Indies. It would be a surprise if he did not make the most of one of them at least, but you suspect in any event that he would need to register six noughts for the possibility of dropping him even to be considered. It might matter more for Onions, who is anxious to make it as difficult as possible for the England selectors to ignore him, even though it would probably take an injury to one of the incumbents for him to win back his place. Under the watchful eye of David Saker, the England bowling coach, he took the wickets of Joe Denly and Dawid Malan as well as Strauss. He places himself at about sixth in the pecking order currently, having gone to the UAE as cover for the Pakistan series. “But fast bowlers get injured, they can struggle for fitness and form as well so I just have to make sure I’m ready and bowling as well as I can,” he said. “I ran in quite nicely today and it was fun, I enjoyed it.”Onions, who took five wickets here on his Test debut in 2009, against the West Indies, might still be in command of a place but for the career-threatening back injury he suffered the following year. He stresses, however, that there is no lasting weakness. “I’ve been bowling for the last 18 months and I don’t think about it,” he said.He admitted that it was a helpful pitch but the ball that did for Strauss would have been a peach on any conditions. “It was a decent ball,” he admitted. “It swung a little and nipped back. Andrew is a great player and it was good for me and the team to get him out so early.”Worse was to follow for the home side. Denly was lured to play at a ball that left him at the end of Onions’s third over, edging to first slip, and from the first ball of the next, from Callum Thorp, Sam Robson unwisely went after a widish delivery and nicked to second, at which point Middlesex were 2 for 3.Mitch Claydon dismissed Chris Rogers, the temporary captain, with his first ball at the Pavilion End as Onions took a breather, further reducing them to 28 for 4.Rogers has the reins for the moment because Dexter, with single figure scores in seven Championship innings before this one, wants to focus on his batting without the distractions of captaincy, for which reason he will sleep much more easily.Conditions never became much easier, even in the brief sunny interludes, but after a scratchy start, during which he probably should have been out for 4 when Thorp, in the gully, failed to cling on to a chance off Ben Stokes, he even began to play some shots and even look confident. There was another chance, on 20, when Stokes, at backward point, got a hand to a hard outside edge off Claydon, but it would have been a very good catch and the luck, on that occasion, was deserved. When he reached 50 it was for the first time in the Championship since May last year. He lost a partner when Onions produced another gem to find the edge of Malan’s bat, but their partnership added 55 for the fourth wicket and another 49 have gone on to the total since, with John Simpson steady at one end as Dexter raised his boundary count to 13.The weather may preclude a result in the end but any score above 200 for Middlesex will help team morale, even though it may leave Strauss alone with his thoughts.
