Manchester United: Sky Sports drop live Paul Pogba update

Sky Sports have provided an on-air update regarding the future of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Lowdown: Exits galore

Pogba is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and looks likely to leave the club ahead of Erik ten hag’s arrival.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The French midfielder could follow Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani out the exit door, and the 29-year-old may have already played his last game in a United shirt.

Ralf Rangnick admitted last week that an injury Pogba picked up against Liverpool looks likely to rule him out for the remainder of the season, and an update on his future has now emerged.

The Latest: Sky Sports claim

Sky Sports presenter Mike Wedderburn shared more news on Pogba on Tuesday, saying:

‘We at Sky Sports News have been told that his final choice will be a football decision and Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Juventus are all interested.

‘Staying in the Premier League has not been ruled out either. There has been no new offer from Manchester United since last summer.’

The Verdict: Interesting

Sky Sports also added that a possible wage he’ll pick up in Europe wouldn’t match the offer he had from the Red Devils last summer.

He may now be regretting the decision to snub a new United deal in 2021, which could have given him the opportunity to play a key role under new manager Erik ten Hag next season in a major Old Trafford rebuild.

It looks as if a departure is inevitable over the coming months though, so it will be interesting to see where the central midfielder ends up ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. He may not be short of offers but it seems they won’t be as big as the one United made last year.

Investors offered 33% stake in Big Bash teams

Private investors will be allowed to buy a 33% stake in eight city-based franchises that will form Australia’s Big Bash League in 2011-12

Private investors will be allowed to buy a 33% stake in eight city-based franchises that will form Australia’s Big Bash League in 2011-12. Cricket Australia’s board gave approval for the Twenty20 expansion in Melbourne today and the organisation will own and control the competition.Reports this week said Indian corporations had already bought shares of around A$60m in some of the proposed franchises. However, Cricket Australia believes the value of the teams will rival the biggest sporting clubs in the country. The Brisbane Broncos rugby league team was priced at A$36m this year.James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, said private investment would be allowed from minority stakeholders, but the individual teams would be owned by the state associations. “The board has taken a position that it will be less than 49% [minority share], probably more likely to be 33%,” Sutherland said.”We’re very excited and optimistic of the existing interest in these teams and the Big Bash League. Some of the valuations we have done recently put these teams immediately into the upper echelons of Australian sport in terms of value in sporting teams.”The idea is unashamedly based on the India Premier League, but Cricket Australia is determined not to make the same mistakes over ownership that have plagued the competition this year. Two franchises, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, have been struck out following broken agreements, while Kochi, one of the expansion teams, is on the verge of being dumped due to issues with investors. When asked whether fit and proper testing of owners would occur, like what happens in the English Premier League, Sutherland said, “Under the licensing agreement, which each of the states and teams will be bound by, there will be a process of Cricket Australia maintaining the rights to vet or approve any investors in any of these teams.”Sutherland said there was a lot to be learned from the IPL. “I mean that in a positive and negative sense,” he said. “There is a model there that exists that has been incredibly successful.”It’s important to reflect that part of the reason this competition is already attracting investors here and abroad is the fact that it is extremely high profile, by virtue of Big Bash teams having qualified for the Champions League, and been very successful. It’s also because the game of Twenty20 is popular around the world, and it’s a unique opportunity for cricket.”An IPL-style auction is not an option to distribute the playing talent but there will be a strict salary cap and a draft will be considered. There are hopes for a January window to ensure Australia’s international players and big-name overseas stars are available for the entire tournament, but that will not happen at least until the current TV rights deals run out in 2012-13.”We see great merit in having Australian players playing in this competition but obviously that needs to be balanced with our commitments to international cricket,” Sutherland said. “We want Twenty20 to complement, not compromise, international cricket. Finding that balance is important.”Six of the sides will come from the cities that already host domestic cricket, but the state concept will be abolished for the Twenty20 tournament. Expressions of interest will be taken from other areas of the country over the next couple of months and a decision on the final two teams will be made in February. The inaugural tournament will be held in December and January 2011-12.Crowd numbers for the Big Bash, which started in 2005-06, increased by 80% last year to average more than 18,000 per game. Cricket Australia was initially reluctant to join the Twenty20 revolution when it began in England, but quickly swung behind it when realising how popular and lucrative it could be.Cricket Australia has done modelling 20 years into the future and Sutherland is convinced the tournament will be a massive success. “It gives us a huge amount of confidence in how this competition is going to grow,” he said. “In the first couple of years, the cash flows are somewhat handicapped by existing media rights deals, so the marginal revenues may not be quite as large, but we would expect those to kick in from year three and beyond.”While there are expectations the other two domestic competitions will be cut back, Sutherland said the Boxing Day Test was “safe”. “From an international programming point of view, our priority rests with international cricket,” he said. “But all of the research we have done very strongly indicates that the enjoyment that people get from the game of cricket can be spread over the three formats, or discreetly held with one format of the game.”

South Africa hope for lively home pitches

South African’s drawn Test series against Pakistan on placid pitches in the United Arab Emirates left their bowlers craving livelier surfaces. Their cravings for responsive tracks are set to be soothed soon

South African’s drawn Test series against Pakistan on placid pitches in the United Arab Emirates left their bowlers craving livelier surfaces. Their cravings for responsive tracks are set to be soothed soon. The three-Test series against India gets underway in exactly three weeks time and India’s batsmen should start bracing themselves for more bounce and pace than they are comfortable with.”We’ve got to take our strengths into consideration, and hopefully we have wickets that will play to those strengths and help us rather than the opposition,” South Africa coach Corrie van Zyl said at the team’s arrival press conference in Johannesburg on Thursday. “We will hope for conditions that suit our type of players and our type of bowling should come into it.”With that reliance comes with the danger that South Africa could be lulled into complacency, safe in the knowledge that their own conditions could be their 12th man on the field, but van Zyl insisted they wouldn’t be over-reliant on familiar, pace-friendly pitches. “To do that is bit of a Russian roulette approach, and I wouldn’t go that far. We don’t want to make it a lottery and we don’t want the outcome of the series to rest on how the wickets play.”Part of the reason for South African’s new sense of wariness is that in the last two years Indian batsmen have had the opportunity to play on bouncier South African tracks during tournaments such as the IPL, Champions League and Champions Trophy. “They’ve obviously had a lot more exposure on our wickets, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. We’ll have to see how well-adapted they are,” van Zyl said.Despite the practice India’s batsmen have had, van Zyl still believes their biggest weakness when playing away from home may come back to haunt them. “When you’ve played on a certain type of wicket for a long time, and all of a sudden you come and play on a bouncy wicket it’s still going to be a handful.”South Africa want to maximise their advantage on seamer-friendly pitches. They will add a pace bowler to their starting XI to work with Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Jacques Kallis. “The fourth seamer is definitely going to play a role in SA,” confirmed van Zyl. Who that extra pace man will be is a mystery. Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Wayne Parnell were both part of the touring party against Pakistan, but did not feature in either of the two Tests. The fourth seamer means that South Africa is likely to use only one spinner against India. Johan Botha, who played as the second spinner in the Tests against Pakistan, doesn’t think it will be him. “Paul [Harris] has done a good job, and he’s done it for a few years now. I think he’s still number one against India. I doubt we’ll play two spinners, but hopefully I’ve done enough that if there’s a gap I would take it.”South Africa’s Achilles’ heel has been the lack of an attacking spinner and the series against Pakistan gave the slow bowlers an opportunity to stake their claim as part of the wicket-taking clan. For the most part they failed to do so – barring a three-wicket burst from Harris and Botha after lunch on day five of the second Test. Van Zyl wasn’t concerned with the lack of penetration, however. “We felt that two spinners would do the job,” he said. “But the pitch turned out not to deteriorate the way we wanted.”With the Indian batsmen’s level of comfort against spin, particularly of the mediocre kind, South Africa may want to cast their net out for a wicket-taking turner. They’d have to look no further than Pakistani-born Imran Tahir, who has claimed 30 wickets in four first-class games this season at an average of 22.00. Tahir was selected in January this year to play against England but was ineligible to play for South Africa because he did not have the necessary documentation. There is a strong feeling that he will be picked as soon as his papers are in order and he he becomes available.”When?”, is the question even van Zyl is asking, as no-one seems to have a date for Tahir’s status as a South African citizen to be rubber stamped. “The authorities are assisting him”, said South African team manager Mohammed Moosajee. “But he will have to tell us when he receives his papers”. Tahir is expected to be eligible from December, but the exact day is anyone’s guess.South Africa have plenty to think about on the bowling front and almost as much on their minds about batting. Graeme Smith suffered a fractured finger during the series against Pakistan and is likely to miss at least the first Test against India. “I’m hopeful that he will be ready for the first Test. But to say I’m not nervous that he won’t be wouldn’t be honest,” said van Zyl.Hashim Amla also has an arm injury after being painfully hit by a Misbah-ul-Haq pull shot while fielding at short leg, which means van Zyl could be without both two of his top three. “The blow he took yesterday caused a contusion to his left forearm,” Moosajee said, but added that the on-form Amla “should be fine” in time for the first Test on December 16 in Centurion. The three Tests will be followed by a Twenty20 and five ODIs. Van Zyl said he will use the last outing before the World Cup to fine tune his combinations. “By this Indian series we want to be as close to the World Cup 15 as can be.” South Africa beat Pakistan 3-2 in the ODI series in the UAE and, according to van Zyl, gained valuable experience from the close contest. “This tour has given us a lot of answers. To play in what amounted to a final and to win that has given the guys a lot of confidence.”Botha believes India will present an ideal challenge ahead of the team’s quest for ICC silverware in February. “The one-day series will be good preparation for the World Cup. You want to bowl against quality players, and you know the Indian team is a world class unit. If you do well against them you are going to have a lot of confidence going into the World Cup.”

Sunderland must secure Doyle permanently

Sunderland have the chance to finally make their way into the Championship and out of League One as the play-offs are set to begin in the coming days.

Having played 46 games in the league so far this season, the Black Cats have won 24, drawn 12 and lost ten, scoring 79 goals and conceding 53 in the process.

One player that has been a particularly prominent figure for the Wearside club this season is defender Callum Doyle.

Since arriving at the Stadium of Light back in the previous summer transfer window on loan from Manchester City’s U23 side, the centre-back has made 41 appearances across all competitions.

After only missing two league games between the start of the season and March, the 18-year-old has only made three appearances since then.

Despite this lack of regular action in recent weeks, the teenager has still shown what a capable player he is at such a young age and why the club should try and sign him on a permanent deal in the summer.

With the highest number of interceptions (48) to his name in the squad, Doyle also has the second-highest number of tackles (40) under his belt behind Carl Winchester (63).

This shows just how much of a talented defender the £3.4k-per-week gem is off the ball.

In terms of his work on the ball, the youngster has also shown his effectiveness on the pitch by racking up a higher average of passes per game (47.1) than any other Sunderland player to start more than eight league games.

Back in August, the Englishman was on the end of some high praise from journalist James Copley who said that “if you could build the perfect centre-back in a laboratory, the end result would look a lot like Callum Doyle.”

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that bringing the City youth prospect has been a solid move from the Black Cats.

Moving forward, with the summer transfer window on the horizon, whether the club end up moving into the Championship or staying in League One, they should definitely make an approach to the Premier League club to try and see if they would be willing to allow Doyle to leave on a permanent basis and continue his journey with the Black Cats.

Should the Wearside club secure his signature on a permanent deal in the summer, it would surely blow fans at the Stadium of Light away when you consider his performances and enormous potential in the game.

Will Tamil Nadu stop Rajasthan's dream run?

ESPNcricinfo previews the Ranji Trophy semi-final between Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan

The Big PictureStories of underdogs are always fun. Rajasthan, who finished at the bottom of the Plate league last year, shoved out the 39-time Ranji champions Mumbai to reach the semi-finals. Tamil Nadu have almost quietly sneaked into the semis. They played mostly at home where several games were rain-affected and in the quarters, it was bad light that left their opposition Haryana high and dry. This is not to say that Tamil Nadu have entered the final four through luck, but they certainly haven’t marched their way here.Rajasthan chose Aakash Chopra and Hrishikesh Kanitkar as their professional players and have not been let down. Kanitkar, who hadn’t hit a first-class hundred since the 2006-07 season, was chosen as the captain this year and he responded with three centuries. Chopra, who only made 65 runs from four first-class games last season, hit two hundreds this season, including a triple-ton. The third professional, Rashmi Parida, was the third-highest scorer in the league stages and under the watchful eyes of the seniors, the local Rajasthan players have blossomed. Ashok Menaria, the former Under-19 captain, came in and hit a hundred in the quarters and Vineet Saxena, an experienced player, hit a big ton against Mumbai. It’s their seamers who have really set them up this season, though. Pankaj Singh (39 wickets) and Deepak Chahar (32), the new-ball bowlers, have been potent and Vivek Yadav, the quickish legspinner, hasn’t had much to do and has picked up 12 wickets. For Tamil Nadu, S Badrinath (747 runs) and Abhinav Mukund (573 runs) have piled up the runs and the rest were beginning to join the party. The captain Dinesh Karthik, who had a horror season prior to the quarters – 115 runs from seven games, made a vital 57 in a pressure situation against Haryana. R Sathish hit a fine hundred in the same game to ensure Tamil Nadu didn’t lose in the quarters. Most of their games were played on slow surfaces and it shows in the stats: The seamers L Balaji and S Sam have picked up only 20 wickets while the spinners – R Ashwin, Aushik Srinivas and Suresh Kumar – have done the job. However, Tamil Nadu won’t have the services of their top wicket-taker Ashwin, away on national duty, and will depend on Suresh and Srinivas to step up and deliver.Watch out for…Aakash Chopra hit 301 in the final league game to lift Rajasthan out of the Plate league and didn’t contribute big in the semis as he fell to a rough lbw decision. He was very disappointed that he couldn’t contribute in that crunch game and will be a determined to turn it on here. S Badrinath sits at the top of the batting charts for this season with three hundreds and three fifties. He has the patience, the skill, and the hunger to keep scoring those runs, and the domestic run machine will be keen to prove his worth again.Pankaj Singh and Deepak Chahar have been the best in the business this season. Over the last two years, Pankaj, whose stock delivery is the away-going one, has added the incoming ball to his arsenal and reaped rewards. Chahar burst on the scene this season with a rich haul in his debut game and has impressed the onlookers with his ability to swing the ball.Pitch and conditionsThe pitch looks dry but there has been some rain in the past few days. Chopra says he is not entirely sure how it will play.Probable XIsRajasthan: 1 Aakash Chopra, 2 Vineet Saxena, 3 Hrishikesh Kanitkar(capt), 4 Robin Bist, 5 Rashmi Parida, 6 Ashok Menaria, 7 Vivek Yadav, 8 Pankaj Singh, 9 Rohit Jhalani (wk), 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Sumit MathurTamil Nadu: 1 Abhinav Mukund, 2 Arun Karthik, 3 S Badrinath, 4 Dinesh Karthik, 5 K Vasudevadas, 6 R Sathish, 7 C Ganapathy, 8 L Balaji, 9 Suresh Kumar, 10 S Sam, 11 Aushik SrinivasStats and trivia Badrinath has hit 15 first-class hundreds in the last four seasons Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan have played each other three times in Ranji Trophy. Both teams have won one gameQuotes”We might seem stronger in the seam department but Tamil Nadu are a good team. They had many rain-affected games but they obviously have done a lot of things right to reach here. We are confident of putting on a good show”
