West Ham’s 3 worst players v Leicester

West Ham secured a point against Leicester City on Sunday, with Craig Dawson netting an injury-time equaliser for the visitors in a 2-2 draw.

David Moyes made two changes from the side which beat Watford last time out, with Manuel Lanzini and Issa Diop coming into the team. Moyes had initially selected Kurt Zouma to start once again but he dropped out late due to illness.

Jarrod Bowen put the Hammers in front early on, but a mistake from Aaron Cresswell led to Youri Tielemans equalising from the penalty spot before half-time and Ricardo Pereira put the hosts in front just shy of the hour mark. Dawson made sure West Ham would leave with something, though, with his late effort ensuring that the game would end in a draw.

Here at The Transfer Tavern, we’ve used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who were West Ham’s three worst performers to have played at least 45 minutes.

In total, these three players lost the ball a whopping 41 times, were second best in 16 of their 30 aerial and ground duels and didn’t have a shot on goal.

Aaron Cresswell – 6.1/10

Cresswell, who was guilty of giving the Foxes a route back into the game, failed to impress. The left-back committed four fouls, duly receiving a booking, and was second-best in six of his 10 duels.

He gave the ball away 16 times, failed to complete any of his six attempted crosses and didn’t register a shot on goal.

Lukasz Fabianski – 6.2/10

The Polish goalkeeper was West Ham’s second-lowest rated play in the eventful draw against Leicester, with the veteran not enjoying one of his better games.

He lost possession eight times on the day and completed only 14 of his 22 passes, the fewest of anyone to start for the Irons. He also ended the match with eight inaccurate long balls.

Vladimir Coufal – 6.3/10

Coufal played 67 minutes before making way for Ryan Fredericks, ending with a match rating of 6.3/10. The Czech right-back struggled during his time on the pitch, losing the ball on 20 occasions.

He was also second-best in five of his 11 duels, was dribbled past twice and failed to complete a cross or record a shot.

Ryan Harris almost took English route

Ryan Harris, the Australia pace bowler, almost threw his lot in with English cricket before give his career down under one final chance

Ryan Harris, the Australia pace bowler, almost threw his lot in with English cricket before giving his career down under one final chance. It was a decision that has paid off handsomely because Harris now has a chance to play a key role in the Ashes series later this year.Harris had aimed to take advantage of holding dual passports when he signed for Sussex at the start of the 2008 season as a Kolpak player, and started with 4 for 36 in the Champion County match at Lord’s, but was given some poor advice and didn’t realise that he wouldn’t be able to play as a local in Australia. He knew a county career would put paid to any international ambitions and withdrew from the Sussex deal to make one final push for the baggy green.”It was a bit of a muck up with my management, but it was something I did think of with the dual passport,” he told Cricinfo. “I was quite close to doing that, it was just in the final hurdle that I thought maybe not yet. I’d still hoped to play for Australia and wanted to give it another year or two.”If it hadn’t happened then I may have made the move, but things turned around and I probably made the right decision. I got to the point where I said to my management that I’d give it another year or two then I’ll look to move.”He made his ODI debut in January 2009, but the real breakthrough came in early 2010 when he secured his Test debut against New Zealand, at Wellington, having enjoyed a golden spell of one-day action. He had taken 30 scalps in 12 matches including consecutive five-wicket hauls on his recall against Pakistan.”Before Christmas in our season I’d played two games after injury then it all happened very quickly,” he said. “I’ve loved every minute of it. To make my Test debut was something I didn’t think would happen and it’s been great fun.”There is now major competition in the Australian pace ranks with Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle – the trio that made up the Ashes attack last year – absent from the current one-day tour. Harris and Doug Bollinger and currently leading the line-up, with support from Clint McKay and the uncapped Josh Hazlewood, which means a real battle for places.Harris’ ability to swing the ball at good pace has given him a strong chance of making the Ashes starting XI and he admits to letting the mind wander occasionally to the prospect of taking the new ball at his home ground, the Gabba, in Brisbane.”It sends a tingle down the spine thinking about,” he said. “If it happens then brilliant, it would unbelievable to just be part of it. It’s a few months away, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it at all. We’ll wait and see what happens.”The main thing is the depth we’ve got. A couple of years ago people were starting to think whether we capable of replacing the likes of McGrath, Lee and Gillespie. That’s a very positive thing and it is healthy competition. We are all mates and talk about what we have to do, we are all a team.”I know I need to keep bowling well and the Ashes are a long way away, there are blokes out of the side who have done very well, so hopefully the series against Pakistan will go well for me. If they come back and I get dropped that’s the way it happens, I’m not going to be too upset. I want to play, but they’ve proved they are good enough and I’d have to wait for the chance.”

Rangers must avoid disaster with Joe Aribo

Rangers could be in a difficult situation in the summer transfer window as Ibrox maestro Joe Aribo’s contract continues to wind down.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2023 and that means that he will be in the final 12 months of it ahead of the start of next season.

Last week, journalist Pete O’Rourke suggested that the club could be forced to sell him to avoid losing him for nothing the following the year.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It puts the pressure on Rangers maybe to have to cash in on him in the summer if they’re not able to agree on a deal.”

Rangers disaster

Ross Wilson is heading for an unforgivable disaster this summer and must act swiftly to agree a new contract with Aribo. The Ibrox chief must do everything in his power to pin him down to a fresh deal as he is crucial to Gio van Bronckhorst’s side and they cannot be forced into moving him on for a cut-price fee in the summer.

He has been in sensational form this season and the supporters will surely want to see the club keep hold of him heading into next season. In the Premiership this season, the maestro has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.11 in midfield as he has contributed with six goals and four assists.

Aribo has averaged 1.8 key passes and 2.0 tackles and interceptions per game in the division. This shows his ability to make an impact in both boxes as he helps Rangers on the defensive side of the game whilst showing off his quality on the ball in the final third to score and create goals, which is why he is a major player for Van Bronckhorst and losing him would be unforgivable.

His former Charlton teammate Ezri Konsa once lauded the £14k-per-week midfielder, saying: “Having Gerrard as his manager at Rangers, that has made him go up another level.

“Joe’s style is unique. When I was with him at Charlton he did remind me for a while of a left-footed Yaya Toure. But you don’t get a lot of midfielders like Joe, there aren’t many around.

“Like Toure, for a tall guy he’s got such great feet. But that languid style he’s got is actually fairly unique in the game.”

These comments from the Aston Villa centre-back highlight how big of a blow it would be to lose Aribo as he is, as the Englishman says, a unique player who could be difficult to replace. Wilson could have a tough job on his hands to find a player who is able to make such a big impact on a consistent basis, which is another reason why he is heading for a disaster with the Nigerian.

He must now throw the kitchen sink at the ex-Charlton man to ensure that his future is with the Light Blues and not south of the border in England or anywhere else.

Net bowlers reinforce India sans Sreesanth, Harbhajan

Jaidev Unadkat and Umesh Yadav, mainly as net bowlers, to Colombo came good in an undesired way as two frontline bowlers missed India’s first net session of the tour

Sreesanth is down with knee discomfort and the board is set to make an official announcement on his availability tomorrow•AFP

The BCCI’s move to send over Jaidev Unadkat and Umesh Yadav, mainly as net bowlers, to Colombo came good in an undesired way as two frontline bowlers missed India’s first net session of the tour. Sreesanth was down with a knee discomfort and Harbhajan Singh with fever. Sreesanth has had an MRI done, and the board is likely to make an official communication on Monday. A first nets session without two main bowlers would have frustrated the visitors after a steady drizzle denied them practise on Saturday. The issues with Sreesanth and Harbhajan are coincidental, but that the board agreed to the team’s request for extra bowlers is worth credit. It is believed that the team management had asked the BCCI for a couple of promising young bowlers, who could solve India’s problem of lack of quality net bowlers on their away assignments. So Unadkat, playing in the India A tour of England, was asked to accompany Wriddhiman Saha and Abhimanyu Mithun, who are part of the Test squad.Although this is a hastily arranged tour, the BCCI had earlier acted prudently by getting the programme changed to include a three-day tour game, and making sure the team reached the country nine days before the first Test. The Indian team had come in for a lot of criticism for the absence of a warm-up game in their World Twenty20 schedule. They didn’t have a warm-up game on their previous Test tour, to New Zealand, either. Both these decisions could be pointing towards a pleasant change in the board’s attitude where it listens to the needs of the team management. The choice of the bowlers is interesting. The 18-year-old Unadkat, who was one of India’s better performers in the Under-19 World Cup, first caught attention when Wasim Akram, his coach at Kolkata Knight Riders, had nice things to say about him. Yadav has taken the more conventional route to the reckoning, through two solid reasons with Vidarbha. He made his ODI debut during the second-string Indian side’s tour of Zimbabwe.Neither of these bowlers have had chances to bowl at Test batsmen: Unadkat is yet to make Ranji debut, and Yadav plays in the Ranji Plate League. “It was the board’s decision to send them here so that they get exposure bowling to Test batsmen, and also our batsmen get proper practice,” Ranjib Biswal, India’s manager on tour, told Cricinfo.

Wenham issues Spurs homegrown quota claim

Tottenham fans don’t need to worry about the club failing to meet homegrown player requirements due to Oliver Skipp counting towards that quota from next season, according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The Lowdown

Tottenham have confirmed their new Premier League squad following the closure of the January transfer window. It includes eight homegrown players, which is the minimum requirement in the English top flight. They are Brandon Austin, Matt Doherty, Japhet Tanganga, Joe Rodon, Tobi Omole, Ben Davies, Harry Winks and Harry Kane.

The Premier League defines a homegrown player as one who, “irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).”

Next season will be the first that Skipp has been 21 or older at the time of its commencement, and concerns have been raised surrounding the inclusion of youth players such as Austin and Omole, with fans perhaps worried by the lack of senior depth in Antonio Conte’s squad.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest

However, according to club insider Wenham, this will not be an issue next season. Speaking to Football Insider, he claimed:

“I have seen a few fans worried about the homegrown issue,

“But for me, there are no worries at all. The fact that Oliver Skipp will count as homegrown for us from next season, that’s massive.

“Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke are two others who will count as homegrown from next season, assuming both stay at the club.

“Dane Scarlett, Harvey White and Alfie Devine are all players who could break into that squad in the coming years and they count as homegrown.

“Naturally, it makes sense that some fans are worried but we don’t have that many foreign players over the age of 21 taking places in that squad.

“Then next year we will have Pape Matar Sarr joining but he is only 19 so, for me, there is nothing to worry about here.”

The Verdict

Wenham has assured fans that they have nothing to worry about, as Tottenham have a young squad with many prominent talents rising through the ranks. Spurs’ squad has an average age of 25.9 years, a younger average than 13 other Premier League clubs.

This should be reassuring for Lilywhites fans, as they hope that Conte can mould these youngsters into regular top-four contenders in the club’s pursuit of Champions League football. Being able to free up a non-homegrown berth from next season with Skipp’s status changing could help to bring in a game-changing player from elsewhere, so this is very welcome to hear from the club insider.

Gul pleased with rhythm ahead of England Tests

Umar Gul, who picked eight wickets in the two-Test series against Australia, was pleased with his form and was keen to play a more decisive role in the upcoming Test matches against England

Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul, who picked eight wickets in the recently concluded two-Test series against Australia, was pleased with his form and was keen to play a more decisive role in the upcoming Test matches against England.”I feel quite fit as I am back to best rhythm,” Gul told the . “I am looking forward to playing an important role for my country here in the series against England. I was out of match practice before the start of English tour and after playing a few matches here, I feel more comfortable and confident to deliver to the best of my abilities during the upcoming series.”Gul, who returned to the side for the England tour following shoulder injury, made an instant impact with his inch-perfect yorkers that helped Pakistan beat Australia 2-0 in the Twenty20 series. He slipped into the third seamer’s role in the Test matches, while his pace colleagues Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif stole the headlines as Pakistan came back to draw the series 1-1. Gul believed the trio would only get stronger through the course of the tour.”I think the worst part is over. We are here in England for almost a month now and have become accustomed to the conditions very well. Mohammad Asif knows well how to bowl in such conditions. Mohammad Aamer has proved his potential during the series against Australia. So I feel that the performance of bowlers against England would be much better than what they have shown against Australia. Even if the Pakistan attack performs the way it did against Australia, they would provide a good opportunity to their batsmen to win for the country,” Gul said.Gul appreciated the role played by the team coach Waqar Younis and bowling coach Aaqib Javed, both experienced fast bowlers. “Their presence with the team, especially with bowlers, is of great benefit. Both have been of big help to the team members. They are very experienced and know the conditions in England very well. Even batsmen can make full use of their experience,” Gul said.Pakistan’s batsmen struggled through the Australia series and suffered some tense moments before winning the second Test, after the bowlers had set it up by bowling Australia out for 88 in the first innings. Gul was confident that the inexperienced batting line-up would do better against England. “Some of the batsmen are young and want to contribute to success of the team. Some of them played brilliantly and others are gearing up to make full use of their talent during the series,” he said.Pakistan struggled to score the 40 runs needed for victory on the fourth morning in Headingley and lost four wickets before limping across the line. Gul, who brought up the hard-fought win with a boundary, revealed he had backed himself to score the winning runs despite the tension in the dressing room.”I was very confident to hit the winning run. Though the atmosphere was tense, I was normal as ever. Instead of tapping the ball for one, I think an attacking shot would have been ideal at that time and I did exactly that. I aimed for the gap at mid-off and succeeded in piercing through the field. Though basically I am a bowler, I never thought that I would remember any match for hitting. Though there were not enough runs to score when I landed at the crease, the situation was tense, and I was confident of hit the winning run without the loss of any further wickets.”
