Adams believes Hamilton-Brown can take Surrey to the top

Chris Adams, the Surrey coach, believes Rory Hamilton Brown, the 22-year-old Sussex allrounder, has the ‘charisma and intelligence’ to lead Surrey to the top of English cricket

Cricinfo staff15-Dec-2009Chris Adams, the Surrey coach, believes Rory Hamilton-Brown, the 22-year-old Sussex allrounder, has the ‘charisma and intelligence’ to lead Surrey to the top of English cricket.Hamilton-Brown, who is currently with England’s Performance Programme squad in South Africa, moved to Sussex from the Oval in 2008 but Adams, who joined Surrey after the 2008 season, is hoping to attract Hamilton-Brown back to London when they talk on Wednesday.”We’ve got sell him the vision,” said Adams to Surrey TV. “The journey that we have begun here which we hope will be a very special one. I want Surrey to go back to the top of English cricket, that’s what I’m doing here.”After a difficult first year in charge in which Surrey won just one of their 16 Division Two Championship matches and culminated in captain Mark Butcher’s retirement, Adams said the club needs a leader who can inspire and galvanise the squad as the club moves forward and claims that ‘Surrey lad’ Hamilton-Brown is the man to do so.”We need a new captain who really brings the players together and if you look at the guys out there currently, there’s not a massive list. Rory’s name came right at the very top. I know the lad, he’s a super talented cricketer and he’s a Surrey lad first and foremost.”He’s had 85% of his cricket through the Surrey system and a couple of years at Sussex, he’s developed exceptionally well and the time is right for me and him to come together and formulate a partnership which will take Surrey back to where it needs to be – the top of English cricket.”Hamilton-Brown would become the youngest captain on the county circuit and would have to manage the famously volatile temperament of star-batsman Mark Ramprakash. Yet Adams believes the English game can be too conservative and points to the example of Graeme Smith, who got the South African captaincy at the age of 22, to show what can be achieved.”Captains are born. You need charisma and intelligence and the ability to get people to follow you and Rory has that,” said Adams.”One of the problems of English cricket is that we’re too steeped in tradition, When we’re presented with an opportunity like this we tend to rule it out. But look at Graeme Smith – he captained South Africa at 22, look at Cameron White, now in Australia’s one-day team – captained Victoria at 20.”

Newcastle transfer news on Werner

Newcastle United reportedly ‘reckon’ that they now have ‘a chance’ of signing Timo Werner, according to Christian Falk.

The Lowdown: A disappointment

For a player that promised so much after scoring £47.7m move to Chelsea in July of last year.

Considering the money that they have spent on him, the striker has only managed to score 17 goals in 66 games in total over all competitions for the Blues, including just five so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Thus, given that he is still at a good age at 25, Thomas Tuchel’s team may want to consider selling him now in order to recoup as much of that money back as possible.

The Latest: Newcastle swoop?

Speaking to BILD (via Sport Witness), Bundesliga journalist and transfer expert Falk has now revealed the latest on the St. James’ Park faithful’s hope of signing Werner in the January transfer window:

“With Werner, they reckon they’ve got a bit of a chance. They’ve got contacts with the management. One of their players (Fabian Schar) is also managed by the German agency that represents Werner.

“Whether Werner will end up feeling so frustrated at Chelsea and then say ‘I’ll give it a go in Newcastle’ is the big question.”

The Verdict: Avoid

The move for Werner to English football has clearly not worked out thus far, and so he may struggle even more in the North East compared to title hopefuls Chelsea.

Even though the new Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium have the money to spend, Werner is simply too inconsistent to justify paying his whopping £268,000-per-week wages, on top of a potentially hefty transfer fee given his age and position.

Nonetheless, their attack is not the main problem, with their 41 goals conceded by far the most in the top flight so far this term, and so the Tyneside outfit should be looking to prioritise strengthening the defence first of all.

Romano makes Liverpool transfer claim

Liverpool are more likely to sign Renato Sanches than Florian Neuhaus in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Liverpool linked with Sanches

The Reds didn’t make any midfield additions last summer, with centre-back Ibrahima Konate the only arrival and Gini Wijnaldum not replaced in the middle of the park.

One player who was linked with a move to Anfield was Sanches, having impressed for Portugal at Euro 2020 and won the Ligue 1 title with Lille last season.

The 24-year-old, winner of the European Golden Boy award in 2016, is contracted to Les Dogues on a £47,000-per-week deal until 2023, so Lille may be keen to receive a fee for him this year.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The Latest: Romano makes fresh claim

Speaking to Anfield Watch, Romano claimed that Sanches is a more viable option for Liverpool than Borussia Monchengladbach’s Neuhaus moving forward.

He revealed: “Florian Neuhaus is having talks with his agent, but nothing else at the moment. So for sure Renato Sanches has always been higher on Liverpool’s list than Neuhaus.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-15/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Too injury-prone

While Sanches possesses huge amounts of natural talent and an ability to break the lines in midfield – he has averaged 2.6 dribbles per game in the league this season, far better than Mo Salah’s 1.9 per game as the market leader in this regard at Anfield – he is also an injury-prone figure.

The Portuguese gem has never started more than 16 league games in a season in his career, so it is hard to see Jurgen Klopp justifying a move for him.

The Liverpool manager already has injury-plagued midfielders in Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Naby Keita, highlighting the need for signing a more robust operator in the mould of Wijnaldum, who was almost ever-present during his five years at the club.

E agora?

Além do merecimento do ótimo ano do Jô.

Premiação no Campeonato Brasileiro

Cricinfo previews the third match of the tri-series between Bangladesh and India in Mirpur

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran06-Jan-2010Match factsIndis have death bowling worries and the experienced Zaheer Khan will have to show the way•AFP

January 7, 2010
Start time 14.30 (08.30 GMT)Big pictureWin the toss, win the match. That seems to be the norm so far for this tri-series, for obvious reasons: The dew has been the deciding factor for both games. It has affected the bowlers’ grip and forced the spinners to bowl it flat, reluctant to give the ball air for fear of bowling a friendly full toss. Imagine the plight for a team like Bangladesh, which thrives on its spinners. Mushfiqur Rahim, the wicketkeeper, said his team have been practicing with a wet ball in the nets to get used to the dew.Dew apart, Tuesday’s defeat to Sri Lanka was an eye-opener for India. Their death bowling has been erratic in recent one-dayers and it was reflected in the crucial final stages of the chase when they dished out full tosses and no-balls in attempting to target the base of the stumps. The Rajkot ODI – where they defended 414 by the skin of their teeth – was an example of excellent death bowling, but they haven’t been able to replicate that consistently. Even their best death bowler, Zaheer Khan, had a poor outing on Tuesday. With no bowling coach at their disposal, there may not be enough time to rectify that weakness but the best India and Bangladesh can do is to score a mountain of runs as a safety net.Bangladesh will be expected to be far more potent if they bowl first. They will have to look at ways to contain India rather than attack them, because they could leak runs in the process. Against Sri Lanka, their top order wilted after a good start more due to carelessness, before Mohammad Ashraful led the recovery. Bangladesh certainly have more on their plate, but they will feel a lot better if they win that toss.Form guide (last 5 completed matches, most recent first)Bangladesh LWWWW
India LWWLWWatch out forHarbhajan Singh: The one bowler who performed against Sri Lanka, with figures of 3 for 47. It wouldn’t have been easy to grip the ball under lights but two of his three wickets came with good use of flight. The Rajkot blitzkrieg is another example – he stood out with figures of 2 for 58 in ten overs, including the wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan for 160. He’s had a good last ten games, with an economy rate of 4.39 and 15 wickets.Tamim Iqbal: He was Bangladesh’s in-form player in 2009, scoring 642 runs at 32.10 with a career-best 154 and two fifties. He looked poised for another fifty against Sri Lanka but threw it away with a reckless shot. He said recently that he’s trying to focus on occupying the crease for longer periods. If he puts that in practice, it will allow the rest to bat around him.Team newsBangladesh are likely to drop Shafiul Islam, who had a difficult debut – where he was smashed for 39 off five overs – for the experienced Syed Rasel.Bangladesh 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 5 Raqibul Hasan, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Shafiul Islam/Syed RaselIndia could retain the XI for the second game.India 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt and wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8, Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 SreesanthStats and trivia India have won 10 out of 11 ODIs against Bangladesh in Bangladesh. The home team’s only win came on Boxing Day in 2004. Gautam Gambhir has an excellent record against Bangladesh, scoring 401 runs in six games including two hundreds, but Virender Sehwag hasn’t done as well, scoring only 304 runs in nine innings. In 11 innings, Mohammad Ashraful’s highest score against India is 36. He has scored 214 runs in these innings, at an average of 21.40.Quotes”If the middle order performs and we have a flourish towards the end like we did in the first match, then a very good score is possible. If you are bowling second then it is very important for the new ball bowlers to get a couple of early breakthroughs. Otherwise it tends to get tougher and tougher as the wickets are great for batting.”
“Good yorkers and slower ones are always going to help you win the games but I am not too disappointed as it was tough to bowl yorkers here with the dew.”

India start as favourites – Graeme Smith

Graeme Smith’s first press conference on arriving in India was very much in character – quietly confident, understated, controversy-free and no mind games

Sidharth Monga in Nagpur01-Feb-2010

Graeme Smith is aware that his side has little time to acclimatise before taking on India in what promises to be a tough series between top-ranked teams•AFP

Graeme Smith is an imposing figure and a bull-headed batsman, but that’s on the field. Mindgames in press conferences are not his thing, nor South Africa’s. They haven’t made statements in the past about ageing cricketers in the opposition, nor how their opponents play “old-school” cricket, and they don’t predict scorelines. They come in quietly confident, manage to stay low-key, and surprise the opposition. That they have been the most successful visiting team in India over the past 10 years always manages to stay a surprise. They have won one series, lost one and drawn one, which is better than Australia’s one win and two losses. On none of those three occasions did South Africa come in as favourites but in all of those series they stretched India to the extreme.Their first press conference on arriving in India for this series – one that will decide who stays No. 1 for a considerable duration of 2010 – was no different. Ask Smith about India being vulnerable without Rahul Dravid, and he says there is still enough quality in the line-up. Ask him about his team’s good record in India, and he reminds all that it was the box that wasn’t ticked when they beat both Australia and England in away series in 2008.Smith did talk about the No. 1 ranking but if you were the host broadcaster trying to cash in on the stakes, you could have done with better headlines. Smith conceded India were No. 1 for a reason, and were the favourites going into the series.”India have played good cricket to get there”, Smith said. “We have had recent success in terms of having had that ranking. But it’s not really an issue for us, we have come over to India to play good cricket, to focus on our own game, and we know if we can perform to our levels and standards, we will be able to put India under a lot of pressure.”Any time you come to India, it’s always tough, you always probably start as underdogs. India are favourites going into this series. If this series was in South Africa, probably we would have been favourites. In the subcontinent, India have proven to be difficult to beat at any stage throughout nine years of my international career.”The build-up back home was not ideal, with Mickey Arthur stepping down as coach less than a week ago. The bad timing hasn’t been helped by South Africa’s schedule: they come to India – a change of weather, a change of pitches and outfield, a change of the whole ethos from the series they played against England – with only five days to prepare for the first of two Tests. Even a day’s delay in acclimatising could result in an unassailable deficit. While Smith acknowledged the disadvantage that comes with a crunched schedule, he didn’t hide behind it. “International cricket today doesn’t allow you too much time,” he said. “This tour has been changed a couple of times, from one-day tour to Test tour to sort of both, which is great for cricket that we can play Tests and one-dayers here.”But we know we have got the five days, and we have to make the most of that. There is a lot to jam in those five days, especially for Corrie [van Zyl, the interim coach], who has just come in. There is a lot for us to do, the most important thing to do is to get the specifics right, and make sure you are making the most of the each day you are given. The two-day game [their only practice game, against the Board President’s XI] is an important part of it. To acclimatise to these pitches, getting our brains working in the right way, and really start enjoying playing the brand of cricket you have to play in the subcontinent.”It was not just fancy words: they spent a healthy five hours training at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground, the venue of their tour game, a day after the entire team showed up for an optional training session hours after landing in Nagpur. On Monday the players went through rigorous drills, under the supervision of their coaches – van Zyl, Kepler Wessels (batting), Vincent Barnes (bowling) and Rob Walter (the conditioning coach who also assists in the fielding department). While Smith didn’t harp on India’s weaknesses or their strengths or the hype around the No. 1 ranking, he was a confident man thanks to his side’s record in the subcontinent of late. “We won in Pakistan on our last tour there, we won in Bangladesh, we came very close to winning the series here in India”, he said. “We were one-love going into the last Test so I think generally we have played well. I think we have got a very positive mindset when it comes to playing in the subcontinent, which is important. The guys have been together for a period of time, we really enjoy coming to play in India.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Philippe Coutinho links

Aston Villa are in direct contact with Philippe Coutinho’s representatives over a possible loan move.

That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, and, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have gone wild at the update.

Coutinho, who joined Barcelona from Liverpool back in 2018 in a deal worth £121.5m, is keen on a return to the Premier League.

The Brazilian has contributed to 39 goals in 106 appearances at the Nou Camp and is out of contract with the Catalan giants in 18 months time.

The 29-year-old has started just five La Liga games all season and is wanted by six Premier League clubs, with his decision set to be made by the weekend. Romano claimed that Villa are in direct contact with Coutinho’s agent, with a deal not yet agreed as of Wednesday afternoon.

While his move to Catalonia has not exactly gone to plan, the ‘little magician’ undoubtedly still has incredible ability – his compatriot Roberto Firmino claims he is ‘phenomenal’ while his record of 41 goals and 37 assists in 152 previous Premier League appearances speaks for itself.

Villa fans react

@villareport relayed Romano’s claim regarding a possible reunion with Steven Gerrard for Coutinho. This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with many excited.
