Tuchel rules out Gallagher recall

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says the club have no intention to recall Conor Gallagher from his loan at Crystal Palace in January.

The lowdown

Gallagher has arguably been Palace’s standout player since he made the temporary move across London during the summer transfer window.

In 10 appearances, he’s scored a joint-team high four goals and provided two assists.

His average WhoScored rating of 7.5/10 is comfortably the highest in the Eagles’ ranks, with Christian Benteke the next best at 6.96.

His form hasn’t gone unnoticed at international level, with Gareth Southgate handing him a senior England debut in the 10-0 midweek rout of San Marino.

Pundits, like former Palace striker Ian Wright, have already begun to ponder his future at Stamford Bridge.

He says Chelsea simply ‘can’t ignore him’ on the back of his ‘unbelievable’ displays, while Joe Cole insists the Blues won’t make the ‘silly’ mistake of selling him.

The latest

Addressing the press ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Leicester City, Tuchel explained that remaining at Palace until the end of the season was best for Gallagher’s development.

And he also revealed that they’ll sit down with Gallagher in the summer to discuss his ‘goals’.

“I have not thought about bringing him back earlier, because it’s also important for him to be happy where he is, to stay in the moment and not change the next things,” he said, as quoted by The Independent.

“It’s important to be calm in his stage of the career. And I feel him happy there and I think everybody is happy and it’s good he has this kind of impact at Palace and now it’s about consistency.

“He had a game with the national team and we have to process all these things. Right now if you asked me today I don’t think it’s necessary to change everything for him again in the winter.

“And it’s too early to talk about next season and way too early to talk about it in public, and before we talk about it with Conor himself, what he wants and what his goals are.

“That will happen in the summer, because we all agreed to the decision that he wanted to join Crystal Palace and Patrick Vieira’s team.”

The verdict

If Gallagher keeps up this form, Palace will surely dream of keeping him beyond the end of the current season?

But will Chelsea agree to part with their £13.5million-rated asset? It seems increasingly unlikely, but the player himself is apparently having reservations over whether he will actually get a chance at Stamford Bridge.

With that in mind, the Eagles would surely be wise to at least test the Blues resolve with a bid. Either way, the fact Tuchel has no plans to recall the midfield maestro should be music to Vieira’s ears as far as this campaign is concerned.

Peter English presents the final plays of the Ashes summer

Matt Prior leaps to celebrate his deft stumping of Marcus North•AFP

Celebrate like it’s 2005
The England huddle has been a regular feature during the series but they saved their tightest one for after the final wicket. Michael Hussey’s bat-pad dismissal sealed their Ashes-winning fightback and the players converged in a ring, jumping up and down before starting their congratulations for the retiring Andrew Flintoff. In the Australian rooms there was still shock at the way they had lost grip of their favourite trophy. Again.Colly’s wobbles
Not the best end to the series for Paul Collingwood, who missed three catches today. If Collingwood could have flicked up Ponting’s edge off his foot it would have been the take of the year, and he was slow on a Hussey nick that went through his legs before his hands could get there. Those two were very hard, but his second miss of Hussey was simple by club standards, going slowly and a little low to his right off Graeme Swann. Hussey was 44, but it wasn’t like Collingwood had just dropped the Ashes. He raised the ball when he dived in front of first slip to capture Mitchell Johnson’s push.We don’t really hate you
Ricky Ponting is a lot more likeable to English fans when his team is heading towards an Ashes defeat. After a series where he has been a target for the boo-boys, Ponting left with a standing ovation for his 66 and his efforts in the United Kingdom over four tours. He’s highly unlikely to be back for the 2013 Ashes and will be remembered fondly here, mostly for letting the hosts take the urn in 2005 and 2009.Horror start
If Australia were to improve their chances of chasing 546 from impossible to improbable they needed a strong display from the openers. England wanted wickets and they came in the third and fourth overs. Simon Katich mis-read Graeme Swann’s straight ball and two deliveries later Shane Watson was lbw to one coming in from Stuart Broad. The world-record miracle would stay a long way out of reach.Rough running
Broad was the hero on the second day with five wickets but he found things more difficult as England pushed for victory. He also received an official warning from Asad Rauf for running on the wicket while trying to remove Ponting. There were no further problems but only one wicket for the innings.Standing out of his ground
Marcus North has been one of Australia’s best batsmen in this series so his stumping was a sad final act for him. North went for a big sweep off Swann, lunging forward to smother the spin, but missed and held his follow through as Matt Prior took the ball. The problem for North was his back foot had slid out of the crease during the shot and he felt no need to try to shuffle it back. Gone, sheepishly, for 10.Weather watch
It doesn’t matter now but some light rain is predicted for Monday. Any wet weather won’t dampen England’s celebrations.

Everton receive Donny van de Beek boost

Everton have received a potentially significant boost in their pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Toffees have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old for several months after their efforts to sign him over the summer ended in disappointment.

But now, according to Spanish outlet Sport (as relayed by the Liverpool ECHO), Everton’s chances of finally securing Van de Beek’s signature have increased.

Previously reports have suggested that La Liga giants Barcelona were set to compete for the creative talent’s services over the coming months.

However, it’s now believed that new manager Xavi has turned down the chance to sign Van de Beek, providing the Blues with a transfer boost as the winter window fast approaches.

Imagine him and Abdoulaye Doucoure

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s recent sacking as United manager may also have some bearing on the Dutch international’s future, but after making just four Premier League starts in 18 months, he’s likely to be desperate for regular game time.

And that’s something that Rafa Benitez could offer Van de Beek at Everton. Ever since James Rodriguez departed back in September, the Blues have lacked the guile and imagination needed to carve top-flight defences apart.

In their last six Premier League fixtures, the Blues have only found the back of the net on four occasions, highlighting the need for someone capable of succeeding Rodriguez’s role in the team.

During his time at boyhood club Ajax, Van de Beek illustrated his ability to do just that, providing a whopping 75 goal contributions in just 175 appearances, securing a domestic double back in 2018/19.

Despite his limited opportunities at Old Trafford, the midfield maestro has showcased his true potential in promising flashes, with Juan Mata even dubbing him “very clever.”

Therefore, a move to Merseyside could be beneficial to all parties, and the prospect of Van de Beek linking up with Abdoulaye Doucoure in Everton’s engine room is a mouth-watering one.

The duo would offer the perfect blend of tactical intelligence, creativity, power and defensive contribution, potentially providing the spark for Benitez’s charges to surge up the table.

Buddhika Mendis stroked an unbeaten century to steer Singapore to their third win in a row in the ICC World Cricket League Division 6, when they beat Bahrain by seven wickets on a rain-affected day on Tuesday.Play began at all the three venues but heavy rain set in around midday and only Singapore and Bahrain were able to finish their fixture at the Padang ground, while matches at the Kalang and the Indian Association ground were washed out.Batting first, Bahrain were 122 for 4 after 34 overs when the rain came down hard to stop any further play until 4pm. And when the match resumed, Singapore were set a revised target of 164 in 34 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.Singapore successfully knocked off the runs in 30.4 overs, losing only three wickets, and Mendis starred with an unbeaten 103. His innings was all the more impressive considering he had to bat with a runner for the major part of his innings after he had suffered an injury to his right leg.”I’m extremely happy with today’s result. We didn’t start well with our batting but then Mendis came in and played extremely well,” said Trevor Chappell, the Singapore coach. “He was helped earlier in the innings by Anish Param and later by Monish Arora. Arora and Mendis took us through to the end and I’m pleased with the team. We’re just going to have to wait and see how Mendis’ injury goes tonight, ahead of tomorrow’s match against Norway.”At the two abandoned matches, Guernsey were 184 for 2 in 35.2 overs against Norway before downpour prevented any further play at the Indian Association ground while Botswana reached 144 for 4 against Malaysia at the Kalang when play was called off.Tuesday’s abandoned matches will now be played on Thursday, the next designated reserve day. Guernsey will face Norway at the Indian Association ground and Botswana will play Malaysia at the Kalang.Wednesday’s fixtures will remain as scheduled. Norway will play Singapore at the Kalang, Bahrain will play Botswana at the Singapore Cricket Club and Guernsey will take on Malaysia at the Indian Association ground.

Newcastle dealt major blow in Sule pursuit

Newcastle United have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Niklas Sule to St. James’ Park in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

According to reports in Germany (via Chronicle Live), Julian Nagelsmann looks set to offer the Bayern Munich centre-back, who has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle this winter, a new contract at the Allianz Arena.

That represents a stumbling block that would appear to all but end any hopes the Magpies may have of landing the 26-year-old any time soon.

Howe will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Sule has been for Bayern in recent seasons, in addition to the fact that the heart of his defence is an area of the pitch in which Eddie Howe simply must strengthen in January, the news of the defender’s new contract is sure to have left the 43-year-old Toon manager gutted.

Indeed, over his 11 Bundesliga appearances this term, the £31.5m-rated man has helped his side keep two clean sheets, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 0.7 tackles, 1.7 clearances and winning 3.4 duels per game.

These returns have seen the £115k-per-week defender average a SofaScore match rating of 7.06, ranking him as Nagelsmann’s ninth-best performer in the top flight of German football.

As such, considering these fine displays, Thomas Muller’s high praise for the Germany international is perhaps not surprising, with the 32-year-old stating: “When he’s on the move, he’s difficult to stop.

“It’s surprising when a central defender starts dribbling all of a sudden. It used to be the case with Lucio. In addition to that, it’s important that he’s stable in body duels and can pick up speed. He is currently doing very well again. That’s the bottom line. When he delivers these performances, then he’s a very important player for us.”

So, considering the fact that no Premier League side have conceded more than Newcastle’s 27 goals so far this season, the addition of a solid, as well as technically gifted, centre-back in the January transfer window would appear very much needed – which is why Sule’s potential unavailability will undoubtedly come as a major blow to PIF and Howe.

Paine sets up crushing victory

Tim Paine’s maiden one-day international century and two spectacular, direct-hit run-outs from Ricky Ponting sent England tumbling to their third heaviest all-time home defeat and a sixth consecutive loss to Australia

Tim Paine’s maiden one-day international century and two spectacular, direct-hit run-outs from Ricky Ponting sent England tumbling to their third heaviest all-time home defeat and a sixth consecutive loss to Australia. In a thoroughly dispiriting display, England were bundled out for 185 in pursuit of the tourists’ 296 for 8, allowing the Australians a chance at an unprecedented seven-game series whitewash and moving them into a first-place tie with South Africa atop the ODI rankings.England seemed resigned to another punishing outing when Paine and Michael Hussey combined for Australia’s highest third-wicket partnership (163) in limited overs matches against England. That sentiment was mercilessly driven home when Ponting capitalised on the confused states of mind of England’s middle order to gun down Matt Prior and Ravi Bopara during the fielding Powerplay; dismissals from which they would never rebound.England’s run-chase began disastrously when Andrew Strauss was incorrectly ruled out for the second successive match by Asad Rauf, but the hosts had only themselves to blame thereafter. Prior was caught off-guard at the non-striker’s end by a sublime Ponting turn-and-throw at extra cover, while another mix-up from the combustible duo of Owais Shah and Bopara led to the latter’s demise six balls later. Bopara’s departure rounded out a depressing sequence in which England lost three top-order wicket for 15 runs in the space of 26 deliveries, and when Eoin Morgan fell with the England total on 100, another home defeat seemed assured. The 111-run loss was England’s heaviest home defeat in eight years, and 11th worst in their 517-game ODI history. It was, by some distance, the nadir of England’s already lamentable series, and will prompt much soul-searching barely a week out from their Champions Trophy opener against Sri Lanka.Earlier, Paine and Hussey posted Australia’s highest third-wicket partnership against England to lead the tourists to a near run-a-ball total from their 50 overs. Paine notched his maiden one-day international century in just his seventh match, while Hussey blasted a brisk 65 as part of a 163-run stand that eclipsed the previous record set by David Boon and Allan Border in Sharjah 22 years ago.Australia’s prospects of a sixth consecutive victory over England were significantly boosted by the contributions of Paine and Hussey, although James Anderson (4 for 55) ensured the tourists did not have it all their own way. Anderson, clearly rejuvenated after his enforced two-match break, removed Shane Watson and Ponting early and bowled Callum Ferguson with the first delivery of his third spell to apply a degree of restraint to Australia’s total. But the afternoon belonged to Paine. Called in as a late replacement for the injured Brad Haddin, the wicketkeeper-batsman displayed temperament far beyond that of a man playing just his third week of one-day international cricket during a 148-ball innings of 111. He batted methodically in the tense, early exchanges, relying on cover and square drives for the bulk of his runs before expanding his repertoire to include a deft reverse sweep off Graeme Swann and a series of well-struck cut-shots. Patience and placement were his major weapons, although Paine did dip into the power reserves on occasion, most notably when he dispatched a Dimitri Mascarenhas slower ball over the long-off rope.Paine was ably supported by Hussey, who operated on a higher gear to his younger partner throughout his 69-ball stint in the middle. Hussey weathered a testing period early before hitting the accelerator to bring the previously subdued Trent Bridge crowd to life. Glides behind square were complemented by withering blows in front of the wicket – his sixes of Ryan Sidebottom and Mascarenhas a highlight – as Australia’s third-wicket partnership swelled to 163.Hussey’s dismissal to Swann sparked a nervous period for the tourists during which they lost 3 for 17 in 24 deliveries. However, a late surge from James Hopes (38 off 22 balls) and Cameron White (35 off 23) allowed the Australians to take 54 runs from their final Powerplay. The pair combined for a sixth-wicket stand of 53 from 27 deliveries.
