Southampton predicted starting XI v Watford

After getting knocked out of the Carabao Cup in midweek on penalties after drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes against Chelsea, Southampton are back in Premier League action today, with a match against Watford next up for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Speaking ahead of the clash against the Hornets at Vicarage Road, Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed that striker Armando Broja, who has scored in their two previous league games, will miss the match today with an ankle injury.

Taking this into account, here’s how we feel Southampton will line up against Watford, with six changes from the starting XI at Stamford Bridge.

After making 13 saves in midweek and ultimately earning himself a brilliant overall match rating of 9.8/10 from SofaScore, we feel that Hasenhuttl will reward Fraser Forster for his efforts in midweek with his first Premier League start of the campaign ahead of Alex McCarthy, who has played every minute of league action for the Saints so far this term.

In defence, similarly to Forster, we think the Southampton boss will give Lyanco his first taste of Premier League action this season after impressing in midweek alongside Mohammed Salisu, which leaves no place in the side for Jan Bednarek.

For the full-back positions, we reckon Valentino Livramento, who scored his first Saints goal in their 2-2 draw against Burnley, will resume his place at right-back, with Romain Perraud returning at left-back.

In midfield, with James Ward-Prowse back available for selection after completing his three-game ban, we think Hasenhuttl will have no issue putting him back in the side alongside the dependable Oriol Romeu, with Stuart Armstrong and the £13.5m-rated Ibrahima Diallo dropping down to the substitutes’ bench.

On the wings, we reckon Hasenhuttl will go with Nathan Redmond on the left and Theo Walcott on the right seeing as Mohamed Elyounoussi underwent surgery on his hand earlier this week.

Up top, with Broja unavailable, it would make sense for Hasenhuttl to go with the duo of Che Adams, who scored in midweek at Stamford Bridge, and Adam Armstrong, who also featured against Thomas Tuchel’s side and put in a strong performance.

Reverse-swing could decide Ashes – Pietersen

Andrew Flintoff has put the disappointments of injury and defeat behind him and is looking forward to Australia

England is currently on a heatwave alert, but far from making the Australians feel at home Kevin Pietersen believes it can help the home side win the Ashes. The predicted hot, dry summer would aid the bowlers in getting the ball to reverse swing, a factor that proved crucial during the 2005 Ashes series, and Pietersen said it can work again.Four years ago England’s four quicks – Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff – caused no end of problems with reverse swing, while the Australian bowlers found little in return. Of that attack only Flintoff remains from the current generation, but James Anderson and Stuart Broad have developed rapidly over the last 12 months. There has been much speculation around the make-up of England’s five-pronged attack for the series. A balance of three quicks and two spinners is looking increasingly likely, but while England’s advantage in the slow-bowling department is being stoked up Pietersen reckons the fast bowlers can also have a decisive impact.”I’m sure the Australians are probably hoping that the weather doesn’t stay like this, because Anderson, Broad, Flintoff bowling reverse swing – I wouldn’t want to be facing that,” he said. “We’re going to be really tough to play against. If batters do conquer our reverse-swing, I look forward to watching them. It will take some serious batting against those bowlers, all at 90mph, reverse-swinging it both ways.”Anderson is especially threatening with the older ball and Pietersen believes he will be a huge handful for the visitors. “When I saw Anderson doing it at Durham against the West Indies, I said ‘how do you face that?’ I know as a batsman who goes okay against swing bowling, to face that is the biggest test of all.”Pietersen has been doing plenty of homework on the Australians ahead of the series with regular phone calls to his friends in the South Africa team who faced them earlier this year. Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher, who Pietersen played alongside for Royal Challengers Bangalore at the IPL, have been on speed dial in recent weeks as Pietersen builds up his dossier on the opposition.”I have had a lot of communication with [Jacques] Kallis and [Mark] Boucher. A lot of it was very, very useful,” Pietersen said. “They told me about the new bowlers we haven’t seen much of, like [Peter] Siddle, and how to dismiss quite a few of their top batsmen. I speak to Kallis and Boucher almost daily about stuff.”It will be a very different Australia side that faces England on July 8 than the one that completed the 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Sydney in early 2007. Gone are Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and, the man Pietersen is most glad to see the back of, Adam Gilchrist.”The big one that we don’t see is Gilchrist coming in at seven,” he said. “In Perth [during the 06-07 series] when he came in and hit one of the quickest hundreds in history, that was just demoralising. That’s one of the guys we’re very, very happy not to see.”We’ve got to make sure we capitalise on whatever weaknesses we think they’ve got.”Pietersen was less forthcoming about the absence of Warne who, as expected, has had plenty to say in recent days including claiming that without Pietersen England would have no chance in the Ashes. “He’ll be in the commentary box, so will certainly still be there. That’s Warney, I’m not going to get anything,” he said, but couldn’t help having a little dig back. “We are certainly not a one-man team.”We’ve got Strauss who scored so many hundreds recently; Alastair Cook has also scored hundreds in the last six months, Collingwood the same and Bopara three in his last three Test innings. I’ve scored a few, Flintoff has come back into the team and Matty Prior’s batting has been outstanding and that’s before we get to our bowlers.”It is clear that Pietersen isn’t going to take a backward step over the next six weeks. Any concerns about his Achilles are being brushed aside and he said that a player can’t enter a contest against Australia with a single negative thought.”As soon as you try to play against Australia thinking you’re injured that’s when they’ll pounce on you and crucify you. You have to go out there in a challenging fashion. That’s how I like to play – and that’s what I will be doing.” This summer is heating up in more ways than one.

Hora do salto?

Olufunwa can be Southampton’s next Bednarek

With 12 goals conceded in their opening ten Premier League games of the season, it’s safe to say that Southampton have not been as defensively weak as some of the other teams around them in the league table at this moment in time.

One senior player that has played a significant part of Southampton’s season so far is 25-year-old centre-back Jan Bednarek.

He has played the full 90 minutes in each of the club’s six previous league fixtures, keeping a clean sheet on three of those occasions against Manchester City, Leeds United and Watford.

Looking away from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s senior side, however, there is one player that Southampton currently have in their youth ranks that could go on to become the next version of Bednarek at St. Mary’s. That happens to be 20-year-old defender Oludare Olufunwa.

As a product of Southampton’s youth system, Olufunwa has made 14 appearances for the club’s U18 side, managing to score one goal as well as making 24 appearances for the Southampton B team, netting twice and providing one assist along the way.

So far this season, Olufunwa has featured on eight occasions for the B team across all competitions, predominantly playing as a centre-back but also as a right-back. Impressively, he’s donned the captain’s armband on two occasions in their matches against Norwich City and Middlesbrough, showing not only how important he is to the team, but also how versatile he can be on the pitch.

That part of his game is something that stands out to the academy staff too. Dave Horseman once said:

“He has demonstrated good leadership abilities on and off the field and we are delighted he has extended his stay at the club.”

Matt Hale added after he penned terms with the club: “Dare has shown real promise during his first year as a young professional.”

That ability to inspire others is something that has been key in Bednarek’s progression on the south coast. The Saints boss once hailed the Pole as the “perfect role model.”

Looking ahead to the future, if Olufunwa can continue to play regularly for the Southampton B team and make the most out of any potential opportunities he may be given, we feel that he could become a regular senior figure for the Saints in the coming years, much in the same way that Bednarek has done since his arrival in England. In other news: Time to go: Southampton must cut ties with £60k-p/w outcast, Ralph doesn’t rate him – opinion

Villa fans react to Graham Potter links

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter, and as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been giving their thoughts to the rumour via social media.

The Daily Record claimed on Monday evening that the 46-year-old, who is under contract at the Amex Stadium until 2025, had been discussed as an option to replace Dean Smith at Villa Park.

BBC’s Phil McNulty provided a managerial update on Tuesday morning, name-checking the likes of Steven Gerrard, Roberto Martinez, Kasper Hjulmand, Ralph Hasenhuttl and Potter.

When it came to the Brighton boss, he said that the Englishman would be a prime contender for any vacancy, but it is highly doubted he could be tempted to leave the Seagulls.

Despite this doubt, a number of Villa fans are desperate for Solihull-born Potter, who Smith has called ‘fantastic’, to return to the Midlands.

Villa fans react

The AVFC Faithful shared McNulty’s claim regarding Potter via Twitter. Here is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with some urging the club’s NSWE ownership to make their move for the Brighton boss.

Estamos no caminho certo – disse o camisa 27.

Murali sets Test retirement date

Muttiah Muralitharan has said he will retire from Test cricket at the end of Sri Lanka’s home series against West Indies in November 2010

Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan has said he will retire from Test cricket next year. Murali, who is the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 770 wickets in 127 Tests, announced that the two-Test home series against West Indies in November 2010 would be his last.Speaking at the end of the first ODI against Pakistan, in which he won the Man-of-the-Match award, the 37-year-old Murali said he would focus on playing one-day cricket until the 2011 World Cup, to be held in the subcontinent, and would thereafter stick to Twenty20 cricket.”I am not going to play for a long time. Next year’s West Indies series will be the last two Test matches I will be playing,” Muralitharan said. “That’s the right time for me because I will be 38 years old. The 2011 World Cup is my aim, but I will enjoy playing Twenty20 cricket for a few more years.”The hardest game in cricket is Tests. The hardest part is you have to take wickets and get batsmen out and sometimes you have to spend two days on the field. You have to mentally prepare yourself for every game. In Twenty20, you look to contain the batsmen and he tries some shots and gets out. Fifty-over cricket is also the same. In Test cricket you have to read the batsmen, set the fields properly and get the wickets.”Muralitharan missed Sri Lanka’s 2-0 win in the recent three-Test series against Pakistan due to a torn tendon in his right knee, which could be one of the factors in his decision.”I put in a lot of effort in the last one month to be fit,” said Muralitharan. “I trained very hard with the physio Tommy [Simsek] and trainers Jade [Roberts] and Mario [Villavarayan] who helped me to get through the difficult period. I also enjoyed the rest. I trained hard although I knew my knee was not right.Murali’s milestonesAugust, 1992 – Murali made his Test debut against Australia at the Khettarama Stadium and took 3 for 141.December, 1995 – No-balled by Darrell Hair seven times for a suspect action during the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.March, 1997 – Became the first Sri Lankan to reach 100 Test wickets.January, 2002 – Became the fastest to reach the 400-wicket landmark. It took him only 72 Tests. May, 2004: Went past Courtney Walsh’s record for the most Test wickets when he claims his 520th wicket. July, 2007 Reached the 700-wicket milestone in his 113th Test. The last 100 wickets came in 12 Tests.”The doctors said that I have to go through with it and train harder. I can’t go for an operation because I will be out for six to seven months. That will mean my career is almost over and that I am not going to play for a long time.”A torn tendon is a very big injury and it will take a long time to heal. The best suggestion was for me to rest for two to three weeks, train hard and play with a little pain. I was prepared to go through with it. The doctors said that I can definitely play with the injury for about one to two years but in the end when I finish I will have to operate on it.”Muralitharan, who once harboured hopes of becoming the first bowler in Test history to take 1000 wickets, said the lack of Test cricket for Sri Lanka had made it difficult for him to achieve the milestone.”If I am to get 1000 Test wickets we have to play Test matches regularly,” Muralitharan said. “These days we play fewer Test matches.”In 2010, Sri Lanka have only the two-Test series at home against West Indies to look forward to. However, Muralitharan said 800 wickets would be a more realistic target as Sri Lanka are due to play two home Tests against New Zealand starting next month, followed by three Tests in India at the end of the year.Muralitharan made his Test debut against Australia in 1992, and became Test cricket’s leading wicket-taker when he went past Shane Warne’s record of 708 wickets against England in December 2007, fittingly on his home ground in Kandy. He achieved the grand double of being the highest wicket-taker in ODIs as well when he went past Wasim Akram’s record of 502 wickets in 2009.He currently has 507 ODI wickets from the 330 ODIs played, at an average of 22.74. He has also featured in eight Twenty20 internationals, picking up 11 wickets at 16.81.
