As Andrew Flintoff prepares for his latest trip to the operating table Kevin Pietersen, England’s other million-dollar IPL star, admitted it was a massive blow for England, but said players can’t be stopped from joining the event.”It’s going to be very difficult for boards to pull players out of tournaments like this when you’re playing with the best players in the world,” Pietersen told the Guardian. “You can’t have one rule for some and another rule for others. But it’s a huge blow come the summer for England.”Flintoff flew home yesterday to have surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee which is set to keep him out of action for up to six weeks and means he misses the series against West Indies. There was months of negotiations between the ECB and Professional Cricketers’ Association before the players were finally released for the IPL, with the board eventually conceding to the demands to allow an extra week at the event despite England’s crammed schedule.Following an 11-week tour of the Caribbean, Pietersen and Flintoff – along with Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah who were also in West Indies for the duration – had a week at home before heading to South Africa. Those who don’t get injured are due to return next week, shortly before the first Test against West Indies which is the beginning of a hectic summer.Flintoff had an injury-interrupted tour of West Indies when he returned to England for two weeks to recover from a hip problem before returning for the one-day series. His latest problem is not as serious as some of his previous ailments, but means there will be some major changes to England’s early-summer planning.Dr Derek Bickerstaff, the renowned knee surgeon who operated on Michael Vaughan, told Cricinfo that although the operation is a fairly simple procedure the recovery needs to be carefully managed. “There are different levels of this sort of injury,” he said. “But the recovery period should also be pretty rapid. There will probably be a week of rest followed by two weeks on the bike in the gym and by four weeks he should be training again and be ready to play after about six if everything goes well.”There is a small risk that the operation could leave the knee susceptible to further problems because some of the shock-absorbing tissue has been removed, but it’s unlikely to be a factor in the life-time of a fast bowler like Andrew Flintoff although he may suffer later in life. It shouldn’t prevent him returning to action effectively.”

Celtic: Scott Robertson impressing on loan

A product of the highly impressive Celtic academy, Scott Robertson is very much a player to keep an eye on at Parkhead in the coming years.

Indeed, while the central midfielder has made just one senior appearance for the Bhoys – rather unfortunately coming in a 2-0 Europa League loss against CFR Cluj back in 2019 – the 20-year-old has been quietly developing himself as a footballer over three loan spells south of the border.

The first of these came during the first half of last season, in the form of a four-month stint at Gillingham, where the midfielder would go on to make 19 appearances for the Gills, providing two assists for his teammates along the way.

Upon his return to Parkhead in January, the youngster was almost immediately snapped back up by another League One side, Doncaster Rovers, with Robertson subsequently featuring 15 times for Richie Wellens’ side, registering one assist during his time with the Dons.

As a result of his impressive displays for two separate League One sides last time out, Crewe Alexandra decided to take the 20-year-old on a season-long this summer, where the midfielder has continued his impressive development in the third tier of English football.

Indeed, over his eight League One appearances in the current campaign, Robertson has already bagged one goal, as well as taking an average of one shot and making 0.9 key passes per game.

The youngster has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.5 interceptions, 2.9 tackles, 1.5 clearances and winning a whopping seven duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the Celtic loanee earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.88, ranking him as Crewe’s fourth-best performer in the league.

Indeed, the 20-year-old’s consistent level of performance has also led to the praise of his manager, David Artell, who claimed back in September that the midfielder was the club’s best player at that particular moment.

On Robertson’s displays, Artell said: “Scott’s character is bang on. He listens intently and he looks at you and you know he is taking it all in. There is no noise going on in his head when you speak to him. He wants to listen and learn and when you are like that then you are only going to get better.

“He was terrific again [against Burton Albion]. Really, really good and he was absolutely shattered in those last five minutes because he had run himself into the ground. He has probably been our best performer in the last three games but he knows that has to continue. He knows he has to maintain those levels but he has come here, taken things on board and his attitude to the work is first class… we have a real gem of a player on our hands.”

As such, with another season of regular game time, not to mention a collection of impressive performances, under his belt, upon Robertson’s return to Parkhead, the 20-year-old could take one step closer to emulating his academy predecessor in central midfield, Callum McGregor, and could well cause Ange Postecoglou something of a selection headache in the middle of the park next season.

Leeds seal dream deal with Roberts

Leeds United’s top-half finish in the Premier League last season was littered with incredible success stories throughout the playing squad.

The likes of Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford, among others, caught the eye after making the step up from the Championship to the Premier League.

Another player who made the step up was midfielder Tyler Roberts, as the youngster made 27 top-flight appearances and was directly involved in three goals.

He was signed from West Brom as a teenager in January 2018 and, at the time of the move, Transfermarkt valued him at a measly £225k. He joined after scoring five goals in 17 League One games on loan at Walsall, with the Baggies deciding to cash in on him in the January transfer window.

The Welshman has been a dream signing for the club, certainly from a financial point of view, as he has progressed superbly over the years. Roberts managed seven goals and seven assists in his first two full seasons in the Championship, proving to be a reliable option in a squad that’s bereft of much depth. Of course, that second campaign ended in promotion to the Premier League too.

Tony Pulis, who managed him at West Brom, lauded his talents earlier this year and praised his mentality to keep developing. He said:

“He’s a very very talented boy. And I mean a very talented boy. He has got everything.

“I was always concerned whether he had the mental toughness to really push on. At Leeds, if you haven’t got that Bielsa isn’t going to play you.

“The kid has pushed on. It’s great to see all the young players you’ve worked with, especially the ones you had a little bit of doubt with, come through and he’s one of them. He’s got all the tools, like I said, it was just that mental strength. People say, ‘Does he want it enough, is he prepared to push it’, but over the past couple of years it looks like he’s turned a corner.”

Roberts has been able to use that work ethic to improve himself throughout his time at Elland Road. He has clearly taken to working with Bielsa with ease and made sure that he soaks up as much information from the Argentine as possible, with his soaring valuation an indication of this.

At the time of writing (24/10/21), Transfermarkt value the 22-year-old at £5.40m. This is a sensational 2300% increase in under four years at the club, with just over three years working with Bielsa at Elland Road.

The club snapped him up at a young age and have been able to develop him into a Premier League player, which is why it has proven to be a dream deal. He was a regular appearance maker in the top-flight and played a part in a title-winning season in the Championship, showing that he has had an impact on the pitch whilst also growing in value over the years.

It’s safe to say that if he does depart Elland Road, as has been rumoured, they’ll receive a lot more than the £2.5m they paid to drag him away from the Hawthorns. Based on that alone, it was a great piece of business by the Yorkshire club.

Rajasthan bank on win and hope

Kolkata Knight Riders’ upset win over Chennai Super Kings in Centurion gave an indication of their prominent role in spite of being knocked out, and they may wreck another team’s hopes of reaching the top four on Wednesday

Big PictureThe IPL, much like India’s political system in an era of coalition governments, is resembling a numbers game with spots for the semis set to be narrowed down by net run-rate and the fortunes of other teams. Kolkata Knight Riders’ upset win over Chennai Super Kings in Centurion gave an indication of their prominent role in spite of being knocked out, and they may wreck another team’s hopes of reaching the top four on Wednesday. The scenario for Rajasthan is: lose and you’re out of the tournament, win and stay alive. A victory does not guarantee them a place in the semi-finals; they’ll have to rely on other results and net run-rates to see where they finish. More than a win, Rajasthan will have to beat Kolkata by a large margin to boost their chances, as their negative net run-rate may work against them. But their task is a stiff one, for Kolkata – who saw off a horrific run of eight consecutive defeats – have finally redeemed themselves somewhat. They will be strongly determined to end their IPL on a high by inflicting a heartbreak on their opponents.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Rajasthan Royals – LWLLW
Rajasthan have serious problems with their batting. They’ve shuffled around the openers but none have proved consistent, including Graeme Smith. In the middle order, Yusuf Pathan’s slump has hurt them badly. He’s managed 53 runs in his last five innings, but is one among several who’ve failed. Nos. 3 to 8 have only averaged 14.81 between them in the same period, indicating a let down across the board.Kolkata Knight Riders – WLLLL
Kolkata’s batting is in good health with Brendon McCullum returning to form, Brad Hodge remaining highly reliable and David Hussey marking an excellent return to the IPL. Their pace attack has been their major weakness, and McCullum has often had to turn to Murali Kartik and Hodge to stem the scoring. Ajit Agarkar has been especially poor, going at over ten runs an over over in each of the last three games.Watch out forRavindra Jadeja – In an ailing middle order, Jadeja has proved the mainstay, notching up scores of 27, 19*, 42 and 24 in his last four appearances. With the batting around him crumbling, he does merit a promotion up the order. He’s also proved extremely useful as a left-arm spinner, taking six wickets at an average of 23, but had an off day against Mumbai Indians when Sachin Tendulkar took him for 18 in an over.Brendon McCullum – The innings of 84 against Bangalore sparked a reversal in fortunes, and his 81 against Chennai immediately brought back memories of his murderous assault in the IPL opener last year. He’s struggled as captain, which had affected his own form, and despite the encouraging win in the last game, he is likely to step down after tomorrow.TeamsFor a must-win game, Rajasthan have to consider their options carefully. They have to strengthen their batting, and may just draft in Swapnil Asnodkar. Abhishek Raut has hardly made any contribution in the last five games, scoring 19 in three innings, and hasn’t done much with the ball. He could step out to make way for Asnodkar. Naman Ojha has been disappointing in his last four games, managing just 26 runs but given the untested reserves, leaving him out could prove a big gamble.Rajasthan Royals (probable): 1 Rob Quiney, 2 Graeme Smith, 3 Swapnil Asnodkar, 4 Ravindra Jadeja, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Johan Botha, 7 Naman Ojha (wk), 8 Shane Warne (capt), 9 Amit Singh, 10 Siddharth Trivedi, 11 Munaf Patel.Kolkata might make some changes, giving those have spent all their time at the bench a look-in for their final game of the tournament. Charl Langeveldt’s inclusion is long overdue, and he should come in for Ajantha Mendis. Agarkar’s continued presence in the playing XI has surprised many, and after three successive failures, he could make way for Shoaib Shaikh, who didn’t do anything in his debut game.Kolkata Knight Riders (probable): 1 Brendon McCullum (capt), 2 Sourav Ganguly, 3 Brad Hodge, 4 David Hussey, 5 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 6 Laxmi Shukla, 7 Ajit Agarkar, 8 Charl Langeveldt, 9 Murali Kartik, 10 Ashok Dinda, 11 Shoaib Shaikh.Stats and triviaMunaf Patel conceded 25 runs in the 19th over of the game against Delhi Dardedevils, the second-most expensive of the tournament. Both Munaf and Shane Warne are the highest wicket-takers for Rajasthan with 14 each.McCullum scored 62 of his 81 runs against Chennai in boundaries, the third-highest in the tournament. The 90-run stand between Hodge and McCullum is the highest for any wicket for Kolkata this IPL.Head-to-head recordThe teams fought a thrilling tie earlier in the tournament, which was then decided by a super over where Yusuf knocked off 18 in four balls off Mendis to shut out Kolkata. Last year, Asnodkar and Yusuf helped Rajasthan thump Kolkata by 45 runs in Jaipur. Yusuf again starred for them in the second game between the two teams, making a quickfire 48 to seal a comfortable six-wicket win.

The Australian Cricketers’ Association has welcomed a new pay agreement that will allow players greater choice in the number of promotional appearances they make. Cricket Australia’s 25 contracted players will soon receive financial rewards based on their promotional work for Cricket Australia and its sponsors, according to the .In addition to their national playing contracts, the cricketers will earn a share of a $2.9 million marketing fund based on their individual market worth and the nature and frequency of their promotional appearances. The board has also cut the required number of promotional appearances for each player from 20 to 15 in 2009-10 because of the squad’s hectic schedule.”[It gives] more flexibility to the players who are busiest on field but still allows Cricket Australia to deliver value to their sponsors,” the Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive Paul Marsh told the . “In a busy year such as 2009-10, it is inevitable that those playing all forms of the game will choose to do somewhere close to the minimum number.”In reality, they have no choice given how much cricket they’ll be playing. One of the strengths of this model is that in such a busy year other players will have the opportunity to step up, perform more appearances and therefore earn more money and build their profiles.”The required number of appearances will rise to 18 in 2010-11. The marketing contracts are part of a new memorandum of understanding expected to be announced this week.

O jogo aéreo é fruto do trabalho – avaliou.
