Cash disappoints as Aston Villa slip up

With Dean Smith’s Aston Villa side heading into Saturday’s Premier League clash in decent form after winning top-flight games back to back for the first time this season, the 50-year-old boss would have undoubtedly been hoping for yet another promising performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

However, despite Spurs being in rather contrasting form to Villa in the build-up to the fixture, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side having lost their last three consecutive Premier League games, it was the hosts who left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with all three points, as a first-half Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg strike and a late Matt Targett own goal was enough for Spurs to see Villa off 2-1.

And, while the performance was by no means a disaster on Villa’s part, there were nevertheless a number of Smith’s side who turned in slightly below-par displays in the fixture, however, it will undoubtedly be Matty Cash most disappointed with his showing against Spurs.

Beaten five times

While Cash has been one of Aston Villa’s more impressive performers so far this season, this was certainly not the case on Sunday afternoon, as the right wing-back had a torrid time up against Son Heung-min.

Indeed, over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch against Spurs, the £19.8m-rated defender made no clearances, no interceptions, blocked no shots and made just one tackle, as well as losing nine of his 14 duels.

The £65k-per-week left-back also completed just 62% of his passes, lost possession of the ball on 20 separate occasions and was dribbled past by an opponent five times.

These returns saw the 24-year-old receive a SofaScore match rating of just 6.2, the worst rating earned by any player to have featured in the match.

As such, while Cash is by no means in any danger of losing his spot in Smith’s starting XI, the defender nevertheless let both his manager and his side down with his disappointing display against Spurs.

England huffed and puffed and still couldn’t blow the West Indies house down. They haven’t quite run out of time, but things now have to happen at increasing speed over the next six sessions if the visitors are going to level the series. And speed hasn’t been top of the agenda in recent days. The frustration grew on the bowlers’ faces as the overs ticked by, especially during the fifth-wicket stand between Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash. England had a grip on the game when the pair joined forces and there was a spring in their step. However, it didn’t take much of Chanderpaul’s resilient defence and Nash’s solid defiance to quell the enthusiasm, although Nash is lucky to be there after an lbw shout against Monty Panesar was turned down when he missed a pull.”There’s frustration in that we bowled well as a unit and kept our disciplines on what’s a really flat wicket,” Stuart Broad said. “It was quite a frustrating day, with quite a few chances not going to hand and landing short, and a few poor umpiring decisions, but it’s one of those days. Hopefully tomorrow we can come in and hit them hard before lunch and knock them over.”The impact of bowling on three flat pitches is clearly taking its toll on the quicks as Broad took a swipe at the conditions. “I think the wickets have been terrible to be honest,” he said. “Throughout the series it’s not been a fair battle between bat and ball. I don’t know the exact stats, but it must be nearly 20 hundreds and four five-fers which hardly creates fair cricket.”It’s actually 14 hundreds, but Broad’s point remains extremely valid. “You’ve got youngsters watching, I remember watching Atherton-Donald battles and such, and you don’t get fair battles on wickets like that,” he said. “But that’s what we’re dealt with and it’s probably our fault for getting rolled in Jamaica that they’ve created such flat wickets.”And yet, at times, England looked as threatening as they have at any time in the series except, perhaps, the first innings at the ARG where West Indies made their lowest total of the series, 285. Panesar produced his most consistent display since skittling New Zealand at Old Trafford last May, while James Anderson battled a stomach bug, Broad pounded the deathly pitch and Graeme Swann wheeled away with his bad elbow. No wonder they were close to pulling their hair out whenever the edge was missed, bat-pad chances didn’t go to hand or close leg-befores were turned down.It may have been different if the referrals hadn’t been used on the second evening. England’s effort in trying to squeeze more chances out of the surface was commendable, but continued to prove fruitless. Nash got away with a catch to silly point on 19, and later his lbw, and another chance off Chanderpaul flew just wide of Alastair Cook at short leg. Perhaps, though, the best window into England’s fading hope was when a genuine edge from Nash didn’t carry to Andrew Strauss at slip off Broad, who could barely drag himself back to his mark to try again. It was also a sobering day for Amjad Khan, who enjoyed such a high in the opening session by removing Ramnaresh Sarwan for his first wicket, but continually struggled to control his line. Matt Prior was left sprawling down the leg side on regular occasions as a huge 30 byes were conceded among 61 extras, yet amid the wayward offerings Amjad still managed to produce some cracking deliveries. Before he took the field on the second evening Amjad was seen taking advice off Steve Harmison – sometimes you can listen to too many people. The one moment Amjad will probably be best remembered for is not the celebration of his first wicket, but the non-wicket of Chanderpaul. He finished down at fine leg before realising Daryl Harper hadn’t given it. For all the understandable excitement of a debutant he’d be wise not to repeat it too often, otherwise he’ll have little but memories to take from the game.Maybe he has also taken advice from Panesar, whose appealing remains as histrionic as ever and the feeling persists he could easily do himself out of a wicket if the umpire becomes annoyed by his lack of self-control, as might conceivably have been the case for the lbw that got away against Nash. All the same, he did actually do well to remain excited on this surface.”You’re playing for your country and you’re always going to run in and try to get wickets but it’s disheartening when the ball’s not doing anything and it’s so good for batsman,” Broad said. “But that seems to be the way Test cricket is going and hopefully we’ll realise soon that we need to have some balance between bat and ball.”Although his thoughts were firmly focussed on trying to level the series, Broad couldn’t help but look a little further down the road to his return to home shores. “You get days when it seams around but they seem to be few and far between this winter, but it’s just one of those things you have to deal with as a bowler,” he said. “It makes you use it wisely when it swings in England.”I can’t wait,” he added. “I’ve not seamed a ball for four months so I’m looking forward to that.” It’s a sentiment all the England quicks will share.

Foden’s value has soared since City debut

Following Manchester City’s 6-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup which saw a number of youth players make their senior debuts for the club and ultimately earn praise from manager Pep Guardiola, who also praised the entire youth academy at the club for the players they have and how they have developed over the years, it’s safe to say that it’s a good time to be a young player there.

One young player who has risen through the ranks at City is Phil Foden, who worked his way through the youth system before making his senior debut in November 2017 in a Champions League match against Feyenoord.

Since then, the 21-year-old, who has been described as “fearless” by Harry Kane, has gone on to make 130 appearances for City across all competitions, scoring 33 goals and providing 24 assists along the way.

In terms of his market value, in January 2018, not long after making his senior debut for the club, Transfermarkt had it listed as £4.5m, whereas it now stands at a massive £72m, highlighting a massive increase and how much he has grown, developed and progressed in his career at the Etihad Stadium.

Foden also won the PFA Young Player of the Year award for his efforts for City last season, while on the international stage, he has made 11 appearances for England’s senior team, scoring two goals and providing three assists in the process.

With recent reports claiming that he is on the brink of putting pen to paper on a new six-year contract, this says to us just how important he has been for the club since making his debut and how much they want him to continue with them for the foreseeable future.

Looking ahead to the future, we feel that if Foden can continue playing regularly for the Premier League champions, picking up more goals, assists and trophies, he has the capability to achieve great things in the game and become a club legend at City, possibly seeing his market value rise even further.

The Englishman could also be seen as a shining example of a young talent making his way through the youth ranks at an elite club and becoming an integral part of their first team at such a young age.

Casson goes bush to rekindle career

While Australia’s cricketers contest the Ashes on the lush outfields of Britain, Beau Casson will attempt to resurrect his representative career on the sun-scorched pitches of the Northern Territory

Alex Brown16-Apr-2009

Beau Casson has not played another Test since his debut in Barbados•AFP

While Australia’s cricketers contest the Ashes on the lush outfields of Britain, Beau Casson will attempt to resurrect his representative career on the sun-scorched pitches of the Northern Territory. Casson, the only specialist spinner on Cricket Australia’s central contract list in 2008-09, has made the unconventional decision to play club cricket in Darwin over the winter in preparation for a fresh assault on the Australian Test squad.Symbolically and geographically, the Marrara Stadium in Darwin is some distance from Barbados’ Kensington Oval, where Casson made his Test debut ten months ago. Casson performed solidly in his sole outing against West Indies – dismissing Xavier Marshall, Dwayne Bravo and Sulieman Benn in the second innings to help Australia to an 87-run victory – but was mysteriously axed for the ensuing tour of India. He has scarcely entered Test calculations since. After a chaotic, and ultimately disappointing, 2008-09 season, Casson has resolved to return a more consistent bowler next season. And in a bid to jump-start his campaign, the left-arm wrist-spinner will devote his winter months to the Waratahs club in Darwin, where he hopes to rediscover the form that, not so long ago, earned him the mantle as Stuart MacGill’s understudy.”[New South Wales] Matthew Mott suggested the possibility of doing it, and it’s something I’m pretty keen on,” Casson said. “It’s a good opportunity to get away from the Sydney winter, train and play outdoors in the off-season. I considered the England thing but this is something that is a little left-field and seems to me to be a good option. And if it’s something the coach suggests, then you probably should look at it.”In an indication of his regressing fortunes, Casson is not expecting to hear from the national selectors when the next round of central contracts are announced later this month. Injuries and inconsistency blighted his 2008-09 campaign, resulting in banishment to the fringes of the NSW side after a season that yielded just seven wickets at 91.00 in eight matches.Still, Casson sees opportunity. Since his surprise omission from Australia’s tour of India, Cameron White, Jason Krejza, Nathan Hauritz and Bryce McGain have failed to make the Test spinning slot their own. The latter three bowlers were all chosen despite being overlooked for central contracts; a scenario that has imbued Casson with hope.”In times gone by, Shane Warne and Stuey MacGill pretty much had the spinning spots sewn up,” he said. “Now is a great time to be a young spinner in Australian cricket because of the opportunity that is there. Playing Test cricket was very exciting, and I was quite happy with the match I played. The selectors have since had a look at a few guys, and Nathan Hauritz is doing a good job in South Africa. But there is definitely an opportunity there.”I have done it once and I know I can do it again. There are certain areas I’ll be looking to address, and areas where I need to know my game better. I would love to stay on [the central contract list], but to be honest, I probably didn’t set the world on fire last year. It isn’t the be all and end all, though. Quite a lot of blokes have got a game this year not being on the list.”It was a huge learning summer. There were obviously some frustrating sides to it, and one of those was injuries. What was particularly frustrating was that none of them were signifcant injuries; just annoying ones. But none of this has stopped me from trying to achieve what I want to out of cricket. I have learned a lot about myself and my game, and I am determined to play cricket at its highest level again.”
