Pundit drops Leeds transfer claim on Lewis O’Brien

Kevin Campbell has claimed that Leeds United “could still sign” Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien despite him recently signing a new contract with the Championship side.

What’s the story?

Reports over the course of the summer transfer window suggested O’Brien featured prominently on Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s shortlist, but a deal failed to materialise before the deadline, with suggestions that the Whites’ final offer failed to meet Huddersfield’s demands.

Since then, the 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a new contract to stay with the Terriers, but Campbell has been quick to insist that it may not stop a move to Elland Road in the near future.

He said: “No, no, he could still sign for Leeds next year. He has signed a new contract to up his money and make sure that Huddersfield can get the fee that they want. If Leeds come in they are going to have to come in correct.

“At the end of the day it is easy to say he shouldn’t have signed a new contract but if Leeds really want him they will come in with a bid that satisfies Huddersfield. Listen, he has done the right thing by signing a new contract. If Leeds want him they will get him. Let’s see how it goes.”

Second time lucky for Leeds

Having refused to kowtow to Huddersfield’s asking price for O’Brien, knowledge that the midfielder has signed a new contract with the club shouldn’t be something to overly disappoint Leeds fans.

As Campbell says, if the Whites feel they need the 22-year-old, then a potential move for him could be on the cards in the January transfer window.

A new contract has simply protected O’Brien’s value from Huddersfield’s perspective, but what it doesn’t do, is make him untouchable when it comes to selling him.

Victor Orta and co will surely know what the asking price is for the midfielder given the fact they reportedly had four bids for him rejected, and it will be more a case of whether Bielsa feels he needs his club’s transfer chiefs to push the boat out a little more to strengthen his options.

It could well be second time lucky for Leeds.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered his verdict on Leeds’ transfer business…

Javed Miandad has quit as director-general of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), bringing to an abrupt end his fourth stint with the board since retiring as a player. At a little over two months, it was considerably shorter than any of his three tenures as coach.Miandad stepped down after differences emerged over the exact scope of his role. There was always a lack of clarity over the exact nature of his work. He spoke openly of it as being a troubleshooting role of sorts, delving into whatever areas needed fixing. He unveiled grand plans for domestic cricket, but talked of removing ICL bans and played an active part in arranging the Sri Lanka tour of three ODIs. He was also known to have said that he would don a tracksuit and get out on the field to coach if needed. But in the contract the board offered to him yesterday, which defined his role for the first time since he took over, he found that only domestic affairs were within his ambit and thus did not sign it. “The PCB wanted to restrict me to domestic affairs and I don’t want any interference in my work. I have therefore resigned,” Miandad told AFP.”All the agreements that we had with him so far were verbal,” PCB official Asif Suhail was quoted by espnstar.com. “When he was offered the appointment letter yesterday, Miandad refused the contract.”Though Wasim Bari, the director of HR and administration, refused to confirm the news, another board official said that Miandad wasn’t happy with the contract and neither its financial rewards. “He didn’t like what he had been offered,” the official told Cricinfo. “The scope of the role was that he look after domestic cricket, infrastructure growth and work with the games director at the National Cricket Academy and be based in Karachi. He wanted more. Monetarily he also felt he deserved more given his stature as a Test cricketer.”Miandad later spoke to reporters at Gaddafi Stadium and denied that finances had anything to do with the decision. He said he wasn’t leaving on bad terms, but just that the role wasn’t suitable to him. “Money has nothing to do with this. I wasn’t doing the job for money. I have no problems with the PCB, just that this role didn’t suit me. I don’t leave with a heavy heart and am always available to serve cricket in this country in any capacity possible,” he said.Though Miandad was one of the few men not in favour of the captaincy change that saw Younis Khan replace Shoaib Malik – it wasn’t the personnel as much as what he saw as the panic-stricken reaction to defeat which he objected to – it is understood that had nothing to do with his final decision.”My views on the matter were not sought but I am certainly not angry about yesterday’s decision. My thoughts were that you cannot base a decision on just a loss but my views weren’t sought. I have high hopes that Younis can do well,” he said.Miandad will continue to remain a member of the nine-member governing board committee, however.

Spurs set sights on Dejan Kulusevski

According to a report by AS, Tottenham Hotspur and managing director Fabio Paratici have set their sights on Juventus dynamo Dejan Kulusevski to solve one major Nuno Espirito Santo concern.

The Lowdown: Spurs enter Kulusevski race…

As per reports which have come out over the last week, it appears that Tottenham are firmly in the hunt for Kulusevski, who has emerged as a real target for Paratici at N17.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, another exciting report shared how Spurs and Paratici are even planning an audacious mega money double swoop for both the Sweden international and Juve defender Matthijs de Ligt (Calciomercato).

Another update has now backed Tottenham’s interest in Kulusevski at least as they share how Paratici aims to resolve a major Spurs issue.

The Latest: Paratici formulates plan to solve Kane issue…

As per AS, the Italian transfer chief has set his sights on the €40m (£34.5m) forward, who is now a prime target for the club.

Paratici signed him for Juventus and now wants to bring him to Spurs for one main reason, and that is because star striker Harry Kane is severely out of form and not firing.

After missing out on a move away over the summer, the England captain has failed to replicate last season’s stunning run of form, and AS call it an ‘untenable situation’ for Nuno.

The Verdict: Solid target…

Able to play in a wide array of forward positions including as an out-and-out striker (Transfermarkt), it may take a lot for Kulusevski to solve the Kane conundrum given his inexperience and the fact he has scored more than 10 goals just once in a single season.

However, his potential could be vast and he may end up being a very fruitful long term purchase for Spurs in a similar vein to Bryan Gil or Pape Matar Sarr.

Shoaib Akhtar has targeted the Bangladesh tour next month for his return to the Pakistan side after a knee injury ruled him out the two-Test series against Sri Lanka starting next week.Shoaib said he will not require surgery on the knee, as was earlier suspected. “Doctors have advised me that the blood and pieces of bones in my knee could be removed through injections and there won’t be any need for an operation,” Shoaib told . “I sent the MRI reports to Australia and England, and the advice was not to have an operation, so I hope to be back in action by next month.”Shoaib underwent a similar surgery in 2007 and subsequently missed the World Cup in West Indies.Abdul Qadir, Pakistan’s chief selector, said he would give Shoaib a fair hearing before deciding whether to pick the fast bowler for the ODIs in Bangladesh. “I’ve no knowledge of Shoaib’s physical condition,” Qadir told the . “But I’ve all respect for him as he is a great fast bowler and deserves to be treated with respect. I will sit down with the player soon and will hear him out about his injury.”The only international cricket Shoaib played in 2008 were three matches in the Quadrangular T20 tournament in Canada in August. He served a disciplinary ban imposed by the Pakistan board and was then picked for the ODI series in Abu Dhabi against West Indies but wasn’t selected in the playing XI for any of the games. In 2009 so far he has played two one-dayers against Sri Lanka, conceding 88 runs in 13 overs for one wicket, which prompted his exclusion from the series decider. Since February 2006, he has played just three Tests and 11 ODIs.

When is not-out out? When it's referred

Andrew McGlashan presents the plays of the third day in Barbados

No short leg, no second slip
This isn’t the sort of pitch where you want half chances to go begging, especially when a bowling attack is already struggling to take 20 wickets. Andrew Strauss certainly had plenty of runs to play with after the previous day’s carnage, but time is also of the essence. The bowlers were soon trying a variety of tricks to remove Ramnaresh Sarwan with Stuart Broad going into bouncer-mode from round the wicket. One delivery bounced a little and was fended into the vacant short-leg area, and next ball a short leg went in. A short while later Devon Smith edged between first and third slip (where was second?). Smith didn’t last much longer but Sarwan was more of a problem.Jimmy’s frustration
The quick bowlers won’t be rushing over to thank the groundsman after this match. The promise of pace and carry hasn’t materialised and the ball bounced twice through to the keeper. Coupled with that, the Kookaburra ball doesn’t swing for very long which makes life tough for the likes of James Anderson. He tried to find some swing, both conventional and reverse, but little went off straight. It didn’t take long for Anderson to look a little fed up and as Ryan Hinds defended one solidly back down the pitch, Anderson collected and threw down the stumps. It was the closest England came to bowling anyone all day.Wrong referral?
Graeme Swann has made a habit of striking the West Indies’ left handers on the pads and getting favourable decisions. At the ARG it was all down to the on-field umpires, but here referrals are back. When Swann trapped Devon Smith on the front foot the batsman asked for a second look but there wasn’t enough evidence for Daryl Harper to reverse Aleem Dar’s decision. Then shortly before lunch Swann did exactly the same to Hinds and this time the batsman walked off without asking for TV. Replays showed that the Hinds lbw was less out (if there is such a thing) than Smith’s but nobody will know what Harper would have said.I’m not interested
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was in supreme touch during his 70 and England didn’t look like getting him out. At one point, they were happy just to stop the scoring and Swann bowled six deliveries well wide of the stumps. Chanderpaul resorted to just standing there and watching them go past, barely even bothering with his back lift. He would then sit on his bat handle and wait for the next ball before doing the same again. It was a little like saying “is that all you’ve got?”A mini milestone
Ramnaresh Sarwan has a good collection of Test hundreds, but apart from his 261 against Bangladesh had failed to convert them into more imposing scores. He knew this was his chance and after reaching three figures settled down to do it all over again. With an easy single off Anderson he moved to 140, his new second-highest score in Tests and a mark he hadn’t past since July 2004. This time he made it count. Now it’s getting silly
Talking about referrals is starting to sound a little like a broken record, but they keep provoking heated debate. When Anderson swung the new ball back into Chanderpaul’s pads as he shouldered arms Russell Tiffen’s finger went up. In the same instance, Chanderpaul made the ‘T’ sign and the fun started. There was extra bounce with the new ball and it was already level with the bails (and rising) when it struck the pad. It looked like a certain reversal, but then Tiffen walked back to the stumps and confirmed his decision. Cricinfo’s inboxes got a bashing as did the reputation of this trial. And let’s not even start on Brendan Nash’s dismissal.

Leeds United struck gold with Raphinha move

If you were to rank all of Leeds United’s signings over the past few years, you’d be hard pressed to find someone arguing for anyone other than Raphinha being near the top of that list, if not at the very top.

The Brazilian has been an absolute revelation for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since joining in a £17m deal from French outfit Stade Rennes just under 12 months ago, enjoying a superb debut campaign in English football which saw him net six goals and provide another nine assists in the Premier League alone.

Dubbed as “star dust” and a “matchwinner” by The Athletic’s Phil Hay, the journalist also shed some more light on just how the Whites were able to sign him for so cheap.

He said: “My understanding of what went on at Rennes was that he was as happy to leave as they were to sell him, and it felt like, in the end, all sides got pretty much what they wanted.

“I was asking a couple of journalists over there, ‘why have they done this deal at this price?’ They said because, basically, if they get their money back on him, they would be happy with that, because they don’t think he’s been that outstanding.”

Raphinha’s displays had Leeds teammate Patrick Bamford hailing him after the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace back in February, with the Englishman telling Sky Sports: “I think, to be honest, he has been a steal for Leeds. I am surprised. As soon as he came in, you saw him in training, you know sometimes with players whether they are good or they are top class, and he really was. He stood out straightaway.

“I am surprised that bigger teams, more established Premier League teams I should say, haven’t taken a punt on him because he really is someone special, and he is young.”

The £27m-rated Raphinha has been an absolute masterclass of a signing from Victor Orta and co.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered an update on this former key figure at Elland Road…
