Ponting favours shift of Champions League venue

Ricky Ponting would support shifting the Champions League Twenty20 to another country if the event does not take place in India

Ricky Ponting has said he would support shifting the Champions League Twenty20 to another country if the event does not take place in India following the terrorist strikes in Mumbai on Wednesday night. His comments were echoed by Shane Warne, captain and coach of the Rajasthan Royals, who was en route to Mumbai but said he didn’t think he would be going there.Several Australian Test players plus the Victoria and Western Australia squads were due to fly to India during the next week but Cricket Australia has temporarily suspended the plans.”They’ve said that any cricket travel has been cancelled at the moment,” Ponting said in Adelaide. “I think that’s definitely the right decision right now.”It should become clearer over the next day whether the Australian players are likely to be cleared to go to the tournament, which was due to begin on Wednesday with a match between Victoria and Middlesex in Mumbai. Victoria were scheduled to stay in the Taj Palace hotel, where terrorists entered the building and took hostages on Wednesday, but the games are expected to be shifted initially to Bangalore. At least 80 people were killed in the attacks across the city and Matthew Hayden, who is due to play for the Chennai Super Kings, said it was unclear if the tournament would proceed. He said it would be a “huge loss” for international cricket if the event was cancelled.”It takes a number of hours, up to 12 hours, to get any kind of position on it, so we’ll just have to be monitoring as the Test match goes on,” Hayden said. “There’s been murmurs of [playing in] Bangalore and different opportunities but we’ll just have to go with it and as always work with Cricket Australia and ACA [Australian Cricketers’ Association] and the various positions with DFAT [Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade] to understand what we’re dealing with.”Ponting said the blasts in Mumbai were “close to home” for his players, who earlier this month were in India. He said they were keen to see the Champions League go ahead if possible.”That’s been the whole talk around the breakfast room this morning and certainly even at the start of training was about this incident,” Ponting said. “It goes to show the level of concern that we’re showing towards it.”Everyone who’s playing in the event or wants to see the event do well would like to see it go ahead. So if that means moving it to a different country then I guess I’d support that.”The terrorist attacks have been a more immediate concern for most of the members of the Champions League’s organising committee, who were either staying, or due to stay, at the Taj Palace. Many of them were working late at the BCCI’s nearby offices but Dean Kino, a member of the governing council, was at the hotel when the terrorists entered the building.Kino, who is Cricket Australia’s lawyer, devised the rules for the Twenty20 tournament. “We’ve been speaking to Dean since 6am (8pm GMT) and been in constant contact with him,” a Cricket Australia spokesman told Cricinfo. “We’ve been in contact with his family and we can confirm he is safe and no longer at the hotel.”Shane Warne has stopped in Singapore after being told to delay his travel to Mumbai. Warne and Darren Berry, also part of the Rajasthan Royals franchise, are waiting for further instructions.”I’m shocked,” Warne told the . “Darren and I got off the plane and saw the news on TV. It’s unbelievable. The place is chaos. We are heading to Mumbai and that’s the hotel we are staying at. I don’t think we will be going [to India] now. Why would you?”Warne said he had taken his luggage from the connecting flight and would stay put at the Singapore airport and wait for further information. “At this stage I am going to stay where I am for the rest of the day, but I reckon we are certainties to be on a flight heading home later today,” Warne said. “It is just not worth the risk. No amount of money is worth the risk with what is going on over there at the moment.” The Australian government’s travel advice has warned people to stay away from Mumbai, but has not increased the alert level for India.

Agora, o objetivo é seguir forte contra o Vasco.

Man Utd suffer Jadon Sancho injury blow

Manchester United have suffered a potential injury blow ahead of their Premier League encounter with Newcastle United after Jadon Sancho was forced to withdraw from the England squad.

What’s the word?

The 21-year-old was called up for the Three Lions’ World Cup qualifying tripleheader by Gareth Southgate but played no part in their 4-0 victory over Hungary.

England’s FA then released a statement revealing Sancho had picked up a knock and would play no part in their subsequent fixtures, allowing him to return to United.

“Jadon Sancho will play no part in England’s forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Poland. The forward picked up a minor knock in training earlier this week which ruled him out of the 4-0 victory in Hungary,” the statement read.”Following further assessment, the 21-year-old has returned to his club and is expected to recover in time for Manchester United’s fixture with Newcastle United on Saturday 11 September.” Solskjaer will be gutted

Although the FA claim that Sancho is expected to be fit enough to play some part against the Magpies over the weekend, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will still be gutted at his summer signing’s setback as it looks unlikely that he’ll be ready to start the game.

The former Borussia Dortmund gem arrived at Old Trafford via a £73 million deal back in July, although he’s struggled to find his best form in the opening weeks of his Red Devils career.

After making two substitute appearances off the bench against Leeds United and Southampton, Sancho got his chance from the off last time out when Solskjaer’s side travelled to Molineux.

However, an underwhelming performance saw the flying winger hooked after just 72 minutes, and he’s still waiting for his first goal and assist in a United shirt.

A home game against a struggling Newcastle United side may have been the ideal encounter for Sancho to get off the mark in, but he may be forced to wait a little while longer depending on how his recovery progresses.

Danny Ings could be benched vs Everton

Danny Ings may drop out of the starting line-up for Aston Villa’s clash with Everton on Saturday evening, Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece has said.

The lowdown

The 29-year-old has started all four of Villa’s Premier League matches since his £25m move from Southampton, playing all but 21 minutes.

He has two goals to his name so far, having netted in the opening day defeat at Watford and in the win over Newcastle, while he lined up alongside Ollie Watkins in a 5-3-2 formation away to Chelsea last time out as Dean Smith went with two starting centre-forwards for the first time this season.

Villa are looking to return to winning ways following a 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, but they face a stern test from an unbeaten Everton side with 10 points on the board from their first four games.

The latest

In a fan Q&A for Birmingham Live on Friday, Preece said that Aston Villa manager Smith will tweak his line-up today ‘as he sees fit’.

Ings ‘could well come out’ of the starting XI for the visit of the Toffees to Villa Park, with the journalist predicting plenty of tactical and personnel alternations over the course of the campaign given the depth of options available to him.

Preece replied to a supporter’s query by saying: “Dean will tweak as he sees fit [sic]. Ings could well come out tomorrow. I think we’ll see a lot of change in terms of shape and personnel this season which will be refreshing. Will it work? We’ll wait and see. A lot more options now.”

The verdict

If Smith is looking to give Ings a rest, perhaps it would be wiser to do so in midweek when Villa face Chelsea once again, this time in the Carabao Cup.

Villa supporters may want a cup run similar to two seasons ago, but that game remains a better rotation opportunity for a player as prolific as the 29-year-old.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see if Smith settles on a system which can incorporate both of his two main strikers or whether they’ll largely battle it out for one spot in the starting line-up.

In other news, Villa have been linked with this Championship ace.

Key backs Ford for England role

The momentum behind Graham Ford, the Kent director of cricket, as a successor to Peter Moores as England coach is growing after support from Robert Key

The momentum behind Graham Ford, the Kent director of cricket, as a successor to Peter Moores as England coach is growing after Kent’s captain Robert Key said there would be “no way he could turn it down” if the offer came his way.The ECB are not going to rush into appointing a replacement for Moores, who was sacked last week at the height of the drama that resulted in him and Kevin Pietersen losing their jobs, and have instead installed an interim coaching structure – headed by Andy Flower – for the tour of West Indies. The board will officially advertise the head role later this week and Ford is expected to be one of the names applying.Key said that Ford, who turned down the India job in 2007, would be able to bring the best out of the England team which hasn’t gelled as a unit in recent times.”At Kent he has been fantastic,” Key told . “I’ve never really heard anyone say a bad word about the bloke. It’s not just that he’s liked by everyone but he’s highly respected for what he does for people.”When he got the job here I was on tour in South Africa and Shaun Pollock spoke very highly of him and thought we were lucky to get a coach of his quality,” he added. “To work with a bunch of talented cricketers like the England team have at the minute, Graham Ford would be the perfect man for that. He has a way of getting the best out of everyone.”I think in the back of his mind he’s looking forward to the challenge of possibly trying to do it and get involved with England. He’s had India after him and they offered the job but he turned it down for family reasons. If England did offer him the job, there’s no way he could turn it down.””It’s good for Kent cricket that our director of cricket is in the frame like this,” Paul Millman, Kent’s chief executive, told Sky Sports. “Graham is quiet, assertive and efficient, and if an opportunity arose to work with England we would be supportive.”Key, himself, was also touted in some quarters as a possible solution to England’s captaincy issues with Shane Warne saying he would have made an ideal choice. But Key, who hasn’t played Tests since 2005, isn’t taking such ideas too seriously and said that Andrew Strauss was the right way to go.”I’ll settle for that,” Key said of Warne’s suggestion. “The one thing they [the ECB] are not going to do is make big decisions at the minute. They are going to see how Andrew Strauss does but for me, his record as captain has been fantastic.”Personally, what an honour it would be to even be asked to do that job. But realistically it’s going to be tough for someone to get the job when you’re not in the team.”Key will captain the England Lions on their tour of New Zealand next month so is clearly still in the selectors’ thoughts and is just focussing on earning another chance at the top level.”No matter how good a captain you are, you’ve got to have the respect of your players,” he said. “It’s going to be tough, as much as I have a few friends in that side, as I’ve got to prove to people I can play international cricket.”
