Time To Grow Up Gus!

One benefit of Brighton’s defeat up in Burnley, is that I don’t live there and was able to head back to Sussex with pride. Maybe not so much of the team after an average performance, but pride of where I live.

After huge amounts of possession and pressure on the Burnley goal it seemed only a matter of time before the Seagulls would take the lead. But it wasn’t to be, a Burnley counter attack saw former Swindon goal machine Charlie Austin with time and space to round the keeper before poking the ball into an empty net to give the Clarets the lead and eventually, the 3 points they didn’t really need. Safe in mid table, Burnley need nothing short of a miracle to sneak into the play-off spots.

Brighton played well, right up until when it really mattered. Once the team had worked their way into the final third, things simply fell apart. Evan former Spanish international and Valencia legend Vicente Rodriguez couldn’t find his magic touch to level the scores.

But it wasn’t the lack of chances Brighton took, or the fact that we came away with nothing after a 5 hour drive and having to endure the Easter traffic making it an 8 hour journey back down south. It was Gus Poyet’s actions that really frustrated me.

Don’t get me wrong, Gus Poyet has worked miracles at Brighton. When he took over in November 2009, we were regular relegation battlers at the foot of League 1. He steered the Seagulls to safety with plenty of games to spare. Then, in his first season in charge as a full time manager, he guided Brighton to the League 1 title with ease. After an average start to the 2010-2011 campaign, a late goal against Oldham in September sent the Seagulls top of the league, and that’s where they stayed. Highlights included a 4-0 thrashing of Charlton at The Valley and a hectic March schedule which saw 8 games played, and 8 games won, five of them 1-0 victories.

But his actions in the last five minutes against Burnley were nothing short of childish. For the second time this season, he walked out of the touchline in disgust at the officials, when his team really needed his guidance. When Brighton welcomed Burnleyto the AMEX back in December, you could understand why he walked out. Brighton were down to 9 men after 12 minutes and nothing seemed to go their way after a Craig Noone was tripped in the box and the referee waved away any penalty appeals.

Yet at Turf Moor, with 11 players on the pitch chasing a late equalizer, he stormed off, frustrated with the officials. But the referee wasn’t to blame, OK, a questionable flurry of yellow cards towards the end could have been avoided, but overall, he had a solid game. It was Poyet’s tactics that were t0 blame, not the officials. Great build up play ended in poor creativity in the final third and chances weren’t taken well enough.

In any game, to walk out when your side is close to snatching an equalizer, is unacceptable in my opinion. As the manager, you’re the leader of the squad. How would the players have felt to look over to the dugout and see their manager walking down the tunnel in frustration? I doubt they were aware he was walking out in protest to the officials so their first thoughts may have been “is he angry with us?”

The amount of times Brighton have grabbed all three points or snatched a draw in the last few minutes of a game has been a huge talking point. Doncaster, Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Bristol City, Peterborough, Leicester, Millwall and Cardiff have all either been level or ahead with at most 10 minutes remaining before Brighton snatched a late winner or equalizer.

So for Poyet to simply give up and walk out is out of order. It’s disrespectful to the players who were putting in the effort, Burnley FC for their hospitality, the officials for doing their job and most importantly, the fans who had made the long journey to Lancashire to support their team.

This isn’t the first outburst Poyet has made which has frustrated fans. He’s been fined from blaming officials before, although in some cases, he had every right to (Southampton away). He’s moaned about the clubs wage budgets, how much more money can chairman Tony Bloom pump into the club? We don’t want to end up like Portsmouth, Rangers or Port Vale. We’ve been though all that before and we most certainly do not want to go through it again thank you very much, you’ve been given a budget, now do your best with it and stop moaning like a child, this is serious business.

Poyet needs to learn when it is necessary to moan, and when he just needs to take things on the chin and deal with it, improve on it the next week and never give up. He is one of the best things to ever happen to Brighton and Hove Albion and without him, I wouldn’t be surprised if the club were still in League 1.

Liverpool approach Roberto Martinez

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has reluctantly given Roberto Martinez permission to speak with Liverpool over their vacant managerial post.

The Anfield side are in need of a new head coach after the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group sacked Kenny Dalglish earlier in the week, and have wasted no time in trying to land a replacement.

Martinez has led the Latics out of relegation danger for the second season in a row, and will now talk with the Merseyside club.

“If Liverpool are serious then I may lose him,” Whelan told Sky Sports.

“When they phoned me I was actually with Roberto having a meeting on what we are doing next season.

“I did promise Roberto and I have always said when a big club comes he would have permission to talk to them and they don’t come any bigger than Liverpool.

“I gave him permission and he will be talking to them soon – I don’t know when, but quite soon.

“When Liverpool sacked Kenny I have to say I thought Liverpool would be knocking on the door and sure enough they are.

“I would love to keep him but I have told Roberto he has my permission to speak with Liverpool,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph indicate that a shortlist of up to eight managers has been drawn up for the post, and that Liverpool intend to meet with a number of potential candidates.

Along with Martinez and Swansea’s Brendan Rodgers, Pep Guardiola, Frank de Boer, Didier Deschamps, Jurgen Klopp, Fabio Capello and Andre Villas Boas are believed to be contenders.

Can Newcastle Keep Their star duo Intact?

With so many teams undertaking a desperate search for firepower this summer, Newcastle United are sitting pretty having found two prolific strikers for a relative pittance in today’s market. This is in part due to their increasingly successful recruitment policy but with some of the best clubs in the Premier League sniffing around their African stars, can Newcastle realistically keep hold of Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse next season?

The Senegalese duo both enjoyed instant success at the Sports Direct Arena as they consistently scored bags of goals to endear themselves to the Geordie masses. While this has made them firm fans favourites it has also attracted the attention of bigger clubs and Newcastle will have to fend off interest if they’re to continue their progress. This may not be so easy for the club as they look to push on after an excellent campaign. Ba, their star during the first half of the season, has an interesting release clause in his contract that says during a two month period between 31st May and 31st July, any team willing to stump up £7m can start contract talks with the striker. That means prospective buyers are on red alert and Ba has been linked with moves to Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur among others. It’s an issue manager Alan Pardew has had to deal with all season but is hopeful the situation can be resolved.

“Ever since he signed with us we’ve had it, I don’t think it’s going to go away.

“We want him to stay, the fans do too, and we hope that will be the case.”

The clubs no. 19 was quick to dismiss rumours when he returned from the African Cup of Nations but while this was encouraging news for Magpie fans, the striker hasn’t been tied down to a new deal since because managing director Derek Llambias feels offering improved terms to a player signed only 12 months ago sets a dangerous precedent. This may seem like sensible thinking from the club as they continue to streamline their spending but it still leaves the door open to Ba’s departure. Paris Saint Germain and Galatasaray have also been credited with an interest and Ba has offered little indication recently as to where his future lies.

While fans countdown the days until August 1st, they can take some reassurance from the fact that Cisse seems to be staying put. The curried goat fuelled goal machine was their star during the second part of the season and has attracted admiring glances from rival teams with his spectacular strikes. Gossip aside, the poacher insists he’s happy in the North East and is looking forward to plying his trade in European competition.

“I hope to continue scoring goals for Newcastle next season. I’m looking forward to playing in the Europa League.

“We wanted to play in the Champions League, but we can be very happy with what we have achieved this season.”

Encouraging words from the latest no.9 to don the black and white jersey but nothing is guaranteed in football. A FIFA ruling that stops players appearing for three clubs in one year was meant to dismiss rumours surrounding his future but Cisse too has been linked with Chelsea and Manchester United among others. FIFA rules state:

‘Players may be registered for a maximum of three clubs during the period from 1 July until 30 June of the following year. During this period, the player is only eligible to play in Official Matches for two clubs.’

Since Cisse only played for SC Freiburg and Newcastle last season he would be illegible to sign for another team from July 1st. That means Pardew will have to consider the possibility of losing both his star forwards next month but he’s diplomatically keeping his cards very close to his chest.

“Demba and Cisse were brilliant for us last year, and we hope for the same next season.”

It isn’t just the manager who’s hoping for more of the same next season as fans prepare for their first season in Europe for nearly a decade. Their 5th place finish last time out has rekindled belief that the Magpies can compete at the highest level again but it will be whether or not they can keep players like Ba and Cisse that will truly illustrate how far they’ve come. The foundations may have returned but if Newcastle allow their best players to leave for bigger clubs then they will be forever playing catch up with the big boys.

Do you think Ba and Cisse will remain at the Sports Direct Arena next season? Should fans expect a repeat of last season’s success? Will Newcastle be able to handle the demands of European football?

Marcel Desailly in running for Swansea role

Marcel Desailly has emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant Swansea managerial role, according to The Sun.

The Welsh side are in the market for a new boss after Brendan Rodgers left the Liberty Stadium to take over from Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool.

The Swans were thought to be close to agreeing a deal to bring Wigan assistant Graeme Jones in as the Northern Irishman’s replacement, but talks are thought to have broken down and the Premier League club are now exploring other options.

Desailly has close Welsh connections after studying for his coaching licence with the FAW, and is believed to be interested in the role as an entrance to coaching.

Other candidates that have been touted for the position include Gus Poyet, Ian Holloway and Michael Laudrup, but as yet Swansea have given no inclination of who their preferred option would be.

The International ‘El Clasico’: Three Titanic Clashes

The Spanish take on the Portuguese in a clash billed as the international ‘El Clasico’ given the rivalry between the two sides. Both teams ooze class across the park and will be hoping that one of their stars can take the initiative and fire their team into the Euro 2012 final. Here are three of the key battles to watch on Wednesday:

Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Sergio Ramos

Ronaldo will start out wide for Portugal, but the talisman provides his main threat when running at the heart of the defence. The onus is therefore on his Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos to stop him. He knows his game inside out from training and with his pace and technical ability, Ramos is well-equipped to keep Ronaldo quiet. However, Cristiano’s runs in behind are unstoppable on occasion, indeed you only have to look at his two goals against the Dutch when he split their back four in half with perfectly timed runs across the line as the perfect example. Ramos will also have to be careful in the air, he isn’t quite as solid as perhaps Carles Puyol would be in this area and Ronaldo provides such a threat when bursting onto the end of crosses. Just ask the Czechs. It may seem an obvious statement, but stopping Ronaldo would go a long way in helping Spain reach Kiev on Sunday night.

Miguel Veloso vs. Xavi

Everyone knows about Xavi’s incredible ability with the ball and his metronomic-like passing range. However, people don’t give enough credit to the man charged with disrupting the flow of Spanish possession on Wednesday night, Miguel Veloso. Once rated as one of the brightest talents in European football, the defensive midfielder left Sporting to join Genoa in 2010 and has rather disappeared off the radar since then. However, he has gone about his business efficiently this tournament, breaking up plays and distributing the ball effectively to those around him. Spain will always dominate the game in terms of possession, so Portugal are relying on Veloso to cut off attacks in the final third, while also attempting to disrupt Xavi in his efforts to keep Spain ticking over. A tough ask, but one he is perfectly capable of.

João Pereira vs. Jordi Alba

A tale of two attacking wing backs, indeed Alba has been so impressive, France picked two full backs down the right flank to deal with his threat. Pereira loves steaming forward for Portugal as well and both players provide a decent option as an out-ball if the midfield gets clogged up. Alba is only one of two non-Real Madrid or Barcelona players in the Spanish line-up, though he seems certain to seal a move to the Nou Camp following a splendid tournament. Pereira though is Alba’s teammate at Valencia, having joined them last year from Sporting so he will know all about the qualities Jordi has to offer. Which ever full back can pin his opponent back in his own half could help swing the clash in the way of their team, especially if they’re given the chance to highlight their offensive capabilities.

Victor Moses Should Move To Liverpool …Not London

Having had a big hand in helping Wigan pull of the great escape again last season a host of teams are looking at Nigerian born winger, Victor Moses, with only 12 months left on his contract. Chelsea are very interested in the youngster but with all the midfielders they have bought this summer it’s hard to see where he would fit in. There is no doubt the young man has a lot of raw talent and showed up many of the big teams defence last year, especially Arsenal’s in Wigan’s infamous win at the Emirates. So where should Victor Moses go next if he should leave at all?

I have picked three teams that he is likely to join and the reasons why I think it would make as much sense as Piers Morgan being castrated. Enjoy!

Chelsea:

The big bucks of Roman Abramovich seem to be the most likely place for Moses according to reports on the BBC but I would worry about his growth as a player if he joined the London side. Victor Moses has progressed as a player because Wigan have been able to offer him guaranteed first team football, something that would not be available in the cut throat dressing room of Chelsea.

We have seen it many times before in recent years; a young player has a superb season for a lesser Premier League team and Chelsea become interested because he is in season, as they’d say in the fashion industry. They buy him, never play him and he eventually leaves losing some very important years in his career. It happened to Scott Parker, Glen Johnson and Steve Sidwell. Some of them recovered eventually and some just faded away.

Although this is the most likely destination due to the financial factors involved, I only think this move would work if Chelsea loaned him back to Wigan for another season to hone his skills.

Arsenal:

I already mentioned the infamous victory at the Emirates for Wigan last season and for those of you that don’t remember click here. It was during that match that Victor Moses made Bacary Sagna look a fool and was involved in both Wigan goals despite being able to grab a hat-trick. With rumours of Theo Walcott refusing to go away as his contract negotiations take a back seat whilst the RVP situation goes on, Victor Moses could form a wonderful partnership with Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Even if Walcott stays Moses would do well at Arsenal where many youngsters tend to flourish rather than let there talent dry up, like at another London team. At a price of about £9million he is even in Wenger’s price range.

Liverpool:

Rumours of transfer activity at Anfield this season are as expected as Joey Barton making statements about any subject that other people are talking about. The Daniel Agger saga looks to be the new one that will keep football fans in suspense till the thrilling conclusion later in the month and if Rodgers gets the funds available he should certainly reinvest in another winger to add depth to a shallow pool including Stewart Downing.

Moses fits the bill perfectly for Liverpool; He is young, cheap, won’t have excessive wages and is used to playing the passing game used by Rodgers and Martinez last term. The use of another winger could also rejuvenate Downing’s so far poor career in red giving the Anfield faithful more to smile about. This and the fact Moses is used to playing for relegation candidates means he won’t mind only playing in the Europa League.

Scott Sinclair maybe the number one target for Rodger’s Liverpool but a cheaper alternative may benefit him more.

Mancini insists Manchester City need new signings

Roberto Mancini has claimed Manchester City must spend money on new players to reclaim the Premier League title.

City were second best against Liverpool and fortunate to draw 2-2 on Sunday. Both of the Blue’s goals came courtesy of individual errors, not the defending champion’s enterprising play.

Jose Pepe Reina and Martin Kelly were both culpable when Yaya Toure scored and Martin Skrtel gifted the Manchester club an 80th minute equaliser, with his dreadful pass back, which fell straight to Carlos Tevez.

The only summer arrival on Eastlands has been Jack Rodwell from Everton and while a deal to bring Scott Sinclair to Manchester is close to completion, the Italian still believes he is short of new recruits.

Speaking to The Guardian, the former Inter Milan boss stated, “We need to bring in more players and we have five days to do it.”

All summer, the 47 year old has been bemoaning his club’s lack of transfer activity, publicly attacking club executive, Brian Marwood.

Aston Villa star baffled by snub

Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark is the latest international to publicly criticise manager, Giovanni Trapattoni’s selection policy.

Villa’s young centre back admitted to being baffled by the Italian’s continuation to over-look him for Ireland squad’s despite the fact he is Premier League regular, unlike most of Ireland’s defenders.

The 22 year old made his international debut in 2011 but has since made just one appearance being snubbed in favour of a plethora of players such as Darren O’Dea, Paul McShane and Sean St Ledger who all ply their trade in the Championship.

Speaking to ESPN the Villa defender conceded his surprise, “I have to be honest and say I have no idea what is happening for me with Ireland because the manager and his staff seemed to be very keen to get me on board at the start and now nothing seems to be happening for me.

“There are not too many Irish centre backs playing in the Premier League at the moment, so you would think that would stand me in good stead.”

His comments follow a miscalculated tweet from Ireland and Sunderland winger James McClean slamming the Italian’s decision to over-look him in favour of playing striker Simon Cox out of position against Kazakhstan.

Arsene Wenger stands by his man

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that £9.6 million arrival Olivier Giroud will be a success at the club, despite being unable to open his account for the Gunners thus far.

Giroud signed for Arsenal in June after an impressive season for French Ligue 1 champions Montpellier, in which the striker was the division’s top scorer with 21 goals. However, the 25-year-old Frenchman has failed to convert numerous opportunities that have been presented to him in Arsenal’s first three matches against Sunderland, Stoke City and Liverpool.

To add more pressure to Giroud, the two other major summer signings for Arsenal Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla both opened their accounts for the Gunners in the impressive 2-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday.

Despite this, Wenger remains positive about his target man, and says he just needs time to settle down. He told The Guardian, “I am confident about him. Giroud is in an adaptation period. He has shown he is ready for a fight and I am sure he will adapt to the intensity of an English striker. Against Skrtel he discovered what the Premier League is all about.”

Giroud will be hoping he can shake the proverbial monkey off his back by getting on the score sheet against newly-promoted Southampton on September 15th.

Meanwhile, one player who has made an extremely impressive start to the season is injury-prone midfielder Abou Diaby. Diaby’s performances of late have been reminiscent of the great Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira and have harboured critics who were worried about the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona.

Wenger for one is delighted that he has stuck by Diaby, who was restricted to just four substitute appearances last season after an injury plagued campaign, “I stood behind him because he is not only a fantastic player but a fantastic guy as well. He hasn’t played for a year but now he looks in good shape.”

In regards to Diaby, Wenger will be observing the international break with bated breath as he hopes his flamboyant midfield man will remain unscathed as he turns out for France in their World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Belarus, “there is more to come but let’s touch wood and hope it goes well in the next two to three weeks because he is going away with the national team. He will travel a lot and play two games in four days.”

Quite Simply Arsenal’s ‘Worst transfer XI’

Arsene Wenger’s transfer policy is well known to all that have followed the Gunners in recent years. Buy young, undeveloped talent, turn them into world class players and then sell them on at a decent profit when they get too big for their boots. This worked successfully with the likes of Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry, but more recently the club has struggled to hang onto their better players, losing Cesc Fabregas last summer, while Robin Van Persie felt the grass was greener elsewhere this year.

Wenger won’t stop his transfer policy though despite the club’s lack of success in recent years, but for every Henry and Vieira, there’s another 20 youngsters who were brought out of obscurity only to never make the grade with Arsenal. Before Wenger, George Graham and Bruce Rioch were more traditional in their transfer methods, but still bought some rubbish all the same. Check out the worst XI signings made by Arsenal in the Premier League era.
