Falling down aplenty – 1952

Quite clearly, then, the batting was the mainproblem

Partab Ramchand08-Aug-2002A young and inexperienced Indian outfit was sent to England in1952 to face a side whose fortunes were going through a revivalthat culminated in regaining the Ashes the next year. The resultwas a disaster for the visitors. Three of the four Tests werelost by margins that brooked no argument seven wickets, eightwickets and an innings and 207 runs – and the final Test toowould surely have been lost but for the fortunate intervention ofrain. The record was particularly poor in the first-class gamestoo. Out of 29 matches, only four were won, five lost and 20 weredrawn.

Quite clearly, then, the batting was the mainproblem. Brought up on perfect pitches back home, the youngbatsmen lacked the skill and technique to come good in alienconditions. The weather was another factor that went against thetourists, for it was a wet summer.

The disappointment was especially acute because, during the1951-52 season, India had put up a fine showing against Englandat home. The series was drawn, and in the process Indiaregistered her first victory in Tests. But the truth of thematter was that the visitors were without the services of playerslike Len Hutton, Denis Compton, Godfrey Evans, Jim Laker, AlecBedser and Peter May.In England, in familiar conditions and back to full strength, thehosts were obviously going to be a different proposition. NeitherLala Amarnath nor Mushtaq Ali was picked, while Vinoo Mankad wasomitted from the tour after a misunderstanding over selectionprocedures. A disagreement over terms meant that even as Indiamade their rounds of England with no conspicuous success, theirleading cricketer was playing for Haslingden in the Lancashireleagues. Ultimately, after hectic parleys, manager Pankaj Guptaobtained his release for three Tests after the first Test hadbeen lost.Mankad straightaway made his presence felt, but there is littledoubt that the team would have benefited immensely had he been afull member of the side. His presence itself would have been atonic for the many youngsters in the team, and it is a fair toassume that the side’s overall record would have been muchbetter.Indeed, such was the woeful record of the team that some of theshattering setbacks were of the kind that have not beenexperienced since. In the first Test at Leeds, there occurred theinfamous collapse when India lost their first four wicketswithout a run on the board. In the third Test at Manchester,India were dismissed twice in one day, something that remainsunique in Test cricket. In the final Test at the Oval, India losttheir first five wickets for six runs.Quite clearly, then, the batting was the main problem. Brought upon perfect pitches back home, the young batsmen lacked the skilland technique to come good in alien conditions. The weather wasanother factor that went against the tourists, for it was a wetsummer. The Indians found the pace of Fred Trueman and the swingof Alec Bedser too hot to handle. In his debut series, Trueman, with his disconcerting pace, presented a fearsome sight.Years later, in his autobiography, Trueman was to recall, “Ireally strafed those Indianwallahs in 1952. By the time I hadfinished with them, I had their curly hair up in spikes.” Noexaggeration this – the Indians were really scared of Trueman. The Yorkshire speedster was at his most devastating at Manchesterwhen he took eight for 31 off 8.4 overs as India were shot outfor 58 in less than two hours. In the four Tests, Trueman took 29wickets at an average of 13.31.There were a few crumbs of comfort for the Indians. The battingof Vijay Hazare was an object lesson in how to bat in unfriendlyand adverse conditions. In first-class matches, he scored 1,077runs at an average of 30.77, but it was his batting in the Teststhat was the apotheosis of courage. Time and again he rescued theside with technically sound batting and headed the figures with333 runs at an average of 55.50.But Polly Umrigar was a puzzle. Outside the Tests, he was acommanding batsman, as illustrated by his tour figures of 1,688runs at an average of 48.22 with five centuries, three of themdouble hundreds. In the Tests, plainly in distress againstTrueman, he was a sitting duck, as shown by his meagre aggregateof 43 runs from seven innings. Vijay Manjrekar, anothertechnically qualified batsman, just about lived up to hisreputation. He scored 1,059 runs on the tour at an average of39.22, and his finest hour came when he made a gallant 133 atLeeds in his first Test innings in England. But the remaining sixinnings brought him only 29 runs.More was expected from players like Pankaj Roy, CD Gopinath,Dattu Phadkar, Dattajirao Gaekwad, GS Ramchand and Hemu Adhikari. But they were technically exposed in the English conditions. Roy,who was the batting find of the winter with two hundreds in hisdebut series, had five ducks in seven Test innings, includingfour in a row and a pair. His tour figures were a disappointing788 runs at an average of 21.88.In contrast, the bowling, for all its limitations, was neverreally collared. Ghulam Ahmed was easily the best of the lot, picking up 80 for the tour at 21.92. The tall off-spinner alsoheaded the Test figures with 15 wickets at 24.73. All-roundersDattu Phadkar and Ramchand too had their moments, picking up 53and 64 wickets on the tour, while RV Divecha (50) and Hazare (44)lent a helping hand. There were many highlights in the Tests Hazare’s courageousbatting, Hutton’s technical skill that saw him get two hundreds,Trueman’s devastation, Ghulam’s penetrative bowling, particularlyin the first Test, the 222-run fourth-wicket partnership betweenHazare and Manjrekar at Leeds, Evans’ buccaneering batting thatalmost got him a hundred before lunch at Lord’s (he was strandedon 98).But there is little doubt that the star feature of the series wasMankad’s incredible performance at Lord’s. Coming into the Testside after a stint of league cricket, he top-scored with 72 and184 in both innings and sent down 73 overs to take five wicketsfor 196. His tireless stamina, aggressive batting and skillfulbowling in a losing cause saw critics groping for adjectives. Itremains one of the greatest feats in the history of Indiancricket.

Phil Hay claims Leeds United eyeing Celtic’s Hjelde

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has claimed that Leeds United have Celtic starlet Leo Hjelde on their radar.

What’s the story?

Having recently sealed deals for Amari Miller and Lewis Bate, Marcelo Bielsa’s side look keen on reinforcing their academy side even further this summer.

According to Hay, the Whites have their eye on a pair of Celtic starlets, with centre-back Hjelde, and left-back Matthew Anderson on their radar.

Hay adds that “Leeds are persisting in forming a junior pool who, in a number of positions, might realistically succeed members of Bielsa’s current starting line-up.”

Fans will be excited

The 17-year-old joined fellow Scottish side Ross County on loan, and the club’s boss, John Hughes, has admitted that he could have linked up with Marcelo Bielsa in the Premier League instead.

He said: “Leo is going to be the next Van Dijk – trust me on that. The quality he has shown, the physical challenge, playing real men’s football and standing up to it – it’s been a wonderful experience for Leo.

“Before he came, Leeds United were after him. I think he had to sign an extension to his contract for the loan to go through.”

While he may only be 17, Hjelde is clearly someone with a lot of potential, and Hughes has placed a lot of faith in him by using him in multiple positions, including at left-back and further forward in left-midfield.

And, after seeing him score his first professional goal against Kilmarnock earlier last season, the manager was quick to shower him with praise.

He said: “He found himself out of the team a little bit, then came on there and got his goal. He’s destined for big, big, big things. He won’t be far away from the Celtic first-team when he goes back, but this is what he needs to be doing.”

Given Leeds’ recent signings of Bate and Miller, and that follows on from the business last summer that saw the likes of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood arrive, fans will no doubt be excited about the future of their club.

Whether Bielsa is still the manager when these players eventually make a name for themselves in the first-team in the years to come remains to be seen, but these long-term based signings ensure that the club is in good hands.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay claims there’s a “decent chance” of Leeds making this signing…

Celtic: Hoops interested in Josip Juranovic

Celtic are interested in signing right-back Josip Juranovic from Legia Warsaw, according to Sky Sports (via Football Daily).

The Lowdown: Move for Buta

Celtic appear to be in the market for right-back reinforcements, with rumours over a move for Royal Antwerp’s Aurelio Buta gathering pace in recent days.

Reports have suggested the Hoops are on the verge of a £3m deal for the 24-year-old.

Should that go through, Buta would become Celtic’s fourth big-money signing of the summer after Carl Satrfelt, Liel Abada and Kyogo Furuhashi.

However, it appears as if Buta may not be the only right-back heading to Glasgow.

The Latest: Juranovic links

According to Sky Sports on Tuesday, cited by Football Daily, the Hoops are interested in Juranovic.

They suggested live on TV that ‘he’s on their list’, with the 5 foot 6 defender possible available to sign this summer.

Juranovic, who can also play as a centre-back or as a right-midfielder, is valued at £2.25m by Transfermarkt.

The 25-year-old, who has 10 caps for Croatia, has turned out as a right-midfielder in Legia Warsaw’s Champions League qualifiers this season.

The Verdict: Versatility handy for Ange?

With right-back Juranovic capable of playing at centre-back or as a right-midfielder, that may appeal to Ange Postecoglou.

It seems as if Buta may be the next man in the door, so Juranovic could challenge him for a starting spot while also providing cover in alternative areas.

Strength in depth is always needed when competing on multiple fronts, and bringing in someone like Juranovic would only bolster Postecoglou’s options in several positions for the upcoming campaign.

Six wickets for Johnson in a tough day for the Cidermen at the seaside

Paceman Richard Johnson was in fine form for Somerset today as he took 6 for 47 as the Cidermen dismissed fellow championship strugglers Lancashire for 251 at Blackpool today

Richard Walsh27-Aug-2002Paceman Richard Johnson was in fine form for Somerset today as he took 6 for 47 as the Cidermen dismissed fellow championship strugglers Lancashire for 251 at Blackpool today. When Somerset batted however they found runs equally difficult to come by and will need some resolute batting in the morning to keep themselves in this vital game.Johnson who has missed several championship games this season through injury warmed up for Saturday’s Cheltenham and Gloucester final at Lord’s with an impressive display to show that he is back at the top of his game.It was the former Middlesex man who struck for Somerset early on when he bowled Mark Chilton with the score on 5. Johnson also took the vital wickets of Alec Swann(36) and Neil Fairbrother (23) and then wrapped up the tail as the hosts were all out in late afternoon. The only substantial partnership of the Lancashire was between Fairbrother and Stuart Law(77) who added 77 for the fourth wicket.England man Andy Caddick weighed in with two wickets, and Simon Francis and Keith Parson ended with one a piece. All rounder Michael Burns had to leave the field during the Lancashire innings with a knee injury, the extent of whichWhen Somerset replied they too got into early trouble, losing Matt Wood with the score on 23 and Peter Bowler nine runs later.Jamie Cox and Parsons brought up the fifty but the Somerset skipper was out shortly afterwards when he was caught by Chilton off James Anderson for 20.After his two big scores against Warwickshire at Taunton last week Ian Blackwell will have been disappointed to be out for 8, and before the close of play Parsons also perished when he was bowled by Anderson for 27.The sixth wicket pair of Rob Turner and Keith Dutch guided Somerset through to the end of the day by which time they had reached 91 for 5 off 36 overs. All rounder Michael Burns had to leave the field whilst Lancashire were batting with a knee injury the extent of which is uncertain, but it prevented him from batting in the evening. At the end of the day Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: "This was a tough day again for us, but hopefully with a couple of partnerships in the morning we will get up to their total if not beyond."He continued: "Richard Johnson bowled really well, on a wicket that isn’t easy but isn’t bad either. We have had a bit of a setback today with Michael Burns, but we hope he will be able to bat tomorrow."

Me agradou bastante – destacou o treinador gremista.

Tottenham linked to Nikola Milenkovic

Tottenham Hotspur could secure their ideal heir to Toby Alderweireld this summer after being linked with a move for Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic.

What’s the story?

According to The Athletic’s Tottenham reporter Charlie Eccleshare, the capital club are interested in signing the 23-year-old this summer, despite their reported pursuit of Cristian Romero.

He tweeted: “Nikola Milenkovic, who #THFC hold an interest in, would be a relatively straightforward deal. The player has one year left on his contract and is keen to play in the PL. Around €15m would do it.”

He’s a big upgrade on Eric Dier

With Alderweireld joining Qatari club Al-Duhail, new Spurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo needs to significantly strengthen his backline ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Milenkovic has established himself as one of Serie A’s most promising young centre-back’s in recent years, racking up 133 appearances for La Viola in all competitions.

His impressive performance have seen the 6 ft 5 beast likened to one of the Premier League’s greats in Manchester United legend and compatriot Nemanja Vidic, which will surely delight Spurs supporters.

“Milenkovic is better than Vidic with the ball at his feet, and he is much calmer on the field,” Mozzart journalist Dejan Stankovic told ESPN FC.

“He is the most talented centre-back Serbia have had since Vidic, and they definitely have one thing in common – both are fearless.”

While the youngster may still have some way to go in order to reach Vidic’s incredible levels on the pitch, it appears he would already offer a significant upgrade on one of Tottenham’s current options.

England international Eric Dier came in for criticism last season following a string of underwhelming displays, and Milenkovic’s underlying figures indicate he’s currently performing at a higher level than the 27-year-old.

As per WhoScored, Milenkovic managed 1.4 tackles per league game last term and 1.3 interceptions, bettering Dier’s tallies of 0.8 and 0.8, respectively.

And the Fiorentina ace showcased his ability with the ball at his feet as well, recording a passing accuracy of 86% compared to Dier’s 83.2%.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must swoop for Milenkovic this summer, and provide Espirito Santo with adequate quality and strength in depth for the new season.

The former Wolves boss frequently played five at the back during his four-year stay at Molineux, meaning he’d likel want a couple of centre-back’s through the door this summer. And with the Serbian’s lowly £12.7m asking price, his acquisition would leave plenty of funds left over for other signings.

And, in other news…Paratici heading for Spurs disaster with £12.6m-rated sicknote, fans will be fuming
