Boycott anticipates runs from Ganguly and Lara

Geoffrey Boycott is back on his commentating assignments after knee surgery at Cape Town

Special Correspondent13-Apr-2002Geoffrey Boycott is back to his commentating assignments after knee surgery at Cape Town. But Boycott, one of the biggest supporters of Sourav Ganguly around, will not be supporting India this time.”This is a series between two amateur teams, and I am sure that you will be seeing how the two teams, in competing with each other, repeat the mistakes they have made earlier,” said Boycott. “Basically this series will be won by the team making fewer mistakes. So you can’t support anyone.”But isn’t there anything on the Carribbean cricket fields that he is looking forward to in the next couple of months? “Yes, I have come here to see two left-handed batsmen – Brian Lara and Sourav Ganguly,” said the former England opener.”Lara was in superb touch in Sri Lanka, and he made a mockery of the best spinner in the world by scoring 688 runs in a three-match series. Although he is coming back after five months, he has the motivation to perform better in front of the best batsman of the world,” said Boycott. “He is a player who hates to lose in such personal battles. So the presence of Sachin Tendulkar will be the motivating factor for him. I am really eager to see him maul this Indian bowling attack in his own backyard.”For the Indian skipper, felt Boycott, this was the best opportunity to get back among the runs on foreign soil. “He has the ability to do so, but somehow he was missing the opportunities. Having seen him score a Test hundred after so many days was a good sight,” said Boycott about Ganguly’s recent century at home against Zimbabwe.”But I want to see him score the way he did in 1996 in England. He was at his best form then in Tests,” he said. “I must say that his decision to come at the number three is the best decision for him and for his team too. India need him at number three to score runs at a good pace and allow the batsmen who follow to play freely. Against this kind of Caribbean attack and on these wickets, where the bounce is almost like Indian wickets, there is absolutely no reason why he should not be successful.””I think this tour is very important for the batsman in Sourav Ganguly,” Boycott continued. “Runs made in this series will boost his confidence, and he will go on to be a better Test batsman once that happens.”In the current West Indian squad, the highest wicket-taker is captain Carl Hooper, whom Boycott has referred to as a “lollypop bowler” time and again. Does he still endorse that view? “When you see such lollypop bowlers at the top of the wicket-takers list, you know exactly where the West indian bowling attack is heading,” he said. “I still consider him the same bowler that he was some years ago.”So does he think the series will be entertaining? “I think so, since you can never predict anything about the current lot of Indians – East or West. You can expect individual brilliance from players capable of doing so,” said Boycott.”Personally I feel Harbhajan Singh will make the major difference in the series, especially if he starts bowling the way he did against the Australians. India should always play two spinners, keeping in mind the slow nature of the wickets here,” added Boycott.”I know India seem to forget the basics when touring abroad, but here they have their best chance to win and make their record better. And if they fail, well, you can’t expect anything better from this lot of boys again.”

Wolves transfer update on Palhinha

Wolves are among the top clubs in European football who are eyeing up a move to sign Joao Palhinha in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Palhinha a priority

As reported last month by A Bola (via Sport Witness), Palhinha is a ‘priority target’ for the Midlands club, and they may have an advantage in the long race for his signature.

The news outlet also states that Ruben Vinagre is wanted by Sporting Lisbon, and so a potential swap deal could take place.

The Latest: Another club interested

Now, A Bola (via Sport Witness) are reporting that Atalanta have joined the Molineux faithful in the hunt to sign Palhinha, which also includes Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Napoli.

However, after what the publication describes as ‘good performances’ at Euro 2020, manager Ruben Amorim would now like to keep him in Portugal.

The Lions would have considered a bid in the region of €30m (£25.8m) for their prized asset, but now it is thought that an offer would have to be ‘way over’ that sum to be taken seriously.

The Verdict: Try to negotiate price down

If the Wanderers are serious about beating all of these other teams to signing Palhinha, then they must try and negotiate his price down with Sporting quickly.

Described as a ‘special’ player last season by Amorim, he was key in their domestic title win, winning no fewer than 9.1 duels a game, while also averaging 3.3 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per match (Sofascore).

At just 25 years of age, Palhinha has not his peak yet either, and so WWFC should really push to try to sign him, so long as a reasonable deal can be struck.

Contract issues resolved, for the moment

Changes to the nature of the contracts that New Zealand’s players have with New Zealand Cricket were behind the 24-hour delay in the naming of the sides to tour the West Indies

Lynn McConnell24-May-2002Changes to the nature of the contracts that New Zealand’s players have with New Zealand Cricket were behind the 24-hour delay in the naming of the sides to tour the West Indies. The sides were finally announced today after discussions on an interim contract went longer than anticipated. As a result of the discussions, 20 players have now been placed on interim contracts until after the ICC Champions Trophy tournament in Sri Lanka in September. The contracts were finalised this morning when matters of player payment were resolved.Negotiations between New Zealand Cricket, the major associations and the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association over a longer term contract will continue during the duration of the interim contract.”We had discussions to review the player contract system’s structure and of details within that structure,” NZC chief executive Martin Snedden said.”This is the first time this has been undertaken and it was not possible to complete this before the West Indies tour,” he said.”There were a lot of issues that had to be thrashed out for the first time.Snedden added that he had not wanted NZC to suffer from something like the “Brad Thorn” situation suffered by rugby last year when a player was named in the All Blacks but then withdrew because he didn’t know if he had the commitment to play at that level. The interim contract would offer some security to players for their short-term future. Those players contracted are: Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, Shane Bond, Ian Butler, Stephen Fleming, Chris Harris, Matthew Hart, Robbie Hart, Paul Hitchcock, Matt Horne, Craig McMillan, Chris Martin, Chris Nevin, Jacob Oram, Mark Richardson, Mathew Sinclair, Scott Styris, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori and Lou Vincent.Snedden said another reason for the delay had been the original decision to have discussions when the players returned from their tour of Pakistan, but once that tour was abandoned after the Karachi bomb blast he had wanted to allow players time to recover from that experience and that had resulted in a tight time frame this week for the discussions.Snedden said he had been contacted by several players in the last few days who were expressing real excitement about the West Indies and who took the opportunity to reassure him that they wanted to go.”They are really excited about the trip. They watched parts of the West Indies series with India on television while they were in Pakistan and they are anticipating a real challenge when they go and they are really looking forward to getting into it,” he said.

Hatfield: Ismael’s four-year contract at West Brom a surprise

New West Brom manager Valerien Ismael getting a four-year contract at The Hawthorns is a surprise, says journalist Luke Hatfield.

Ismael was appointed as Sam Allardyce’s successor at the end of last month after leaving Barnsley, with the Midlands club confirming that the 45-year-old has signed a four-year deal.

He was not West Brom’s first choice, however, with it being well-documented that the Baggies eyed up the likes of Chris Wilder and David Wagner prior, only for things to break down at the very end.

For Hatfield, it makes the decision to hand Ismael a four-year contract a surprise, though he sees it as a positive development, as it shows a long-term plan.

“It was a little bit of a surprise,” the Express & Star journalist told FFC. “It’s certainly a bold move by Albion in terms of they’re really showing a sign for the future here.

“I think Albion fans were getting a bit frustrated in that, you know, the likes of Big Sam came in and it did seem very short-termist. This seems the exact opposite, a four-year deal for Valerien Ismael.”

Certainly, it did look like Allardyce was just brought in to put out the fire at West Brom given his record when it comes to keeping teams in the Premier League, something he was unable to do this time round.

With Ismael, having been given that four-year deal, the Frenchman will surely be expected to get West Brom promoted and build something at The Hawthorns.

Liverpool fans react to Otavio agent quotes

The agent of reported Liverpool target Otavio has been discussing the future of his client.

Israel Oliveira told Portuguese newspaper A Bola that the 26-year-old could leave Porto this summer ‘if it’s good for Porto and for Otavio’.

Otavio has a €60m (£51.43m) release clause but the Liga NOS runners-up are in need of an influx of cash and will accept a ‘fair’ offer far lower than that amount.

The lowdown on Otavio

The Brazilian has scored 19 goals and provided 49 assists in 188 appearances for Porto. He has also showcased significant versatility over the course of his career, operating as a central and attacking midfielder, right and left midfielder and even as a secondary striker.

The 26-year-old’s average WhoScored rating of 7.4/10 was the second-highest in the Portuguese top-flight last season, only behind Sporting’s Pote.

Liverpool have already got their summer business underway with the £36m signing of centre-back Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

Fan feed The Anfield Talk relayed Oliveira’s comments, and here’s how supporters reacted. Despite Otavio’s decent scoring and performance figures, many Kopites felt rather underwhelmed by the interest in him – a couple of fans drew comparisons with Manchester United’s advancing pursuit of the prodigious Eduardo Camavinga, who plays in the same position as Otavio.

India record comprehensive triumph in Barbados

For the first time in their long history, India registered a win at Kensington Oval in Barbados today

Anand Vasu29-May-2002For the first time in their long history, India registered a win at Kensington Oval in Barbados today. It took eight tours to the Caribbean and almost 50 years to happen, but the victory was a sweet one as India beat the West Indies by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in this five-match one-day series with two games to go.It was a solid all-round performance from the visitors. Good bowling saw to it that the West Indies did not make it even to the 200-mark, being dismissed for 186 in 43.5 overs.Medium-pacer Tinu Yohannan, on debut, and Ajit Agarkar scalped three wickets apiece, while Harbhajan Singh chipped in with the key wicket of Brian Lara. With a small total to chase, India hardly broke a sweat. Dinesh Mongia, who had spent nearly all tour on the sidelines, came good with a sparkling innings of 74 allowing India to canter to victory. The day began well for India when Sourav Ganguly won the toss and put the opposition in – a move that surprised a few, but one that paid off in the end.Yohannan made his mark quite early. Removing both openers in his first spell, the medium-pacer helped reduce the West Indies to 45 for two. The fact that Yohannan began his one-day international career with a maiden over helped him settle into a good rhythm and gain confidence, enough to try out a few slower balls early on. It was not the slower deliveries that troubled the batsmen though.Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds, in sparkling form from the Tests, began confidently. Although they were in no hurry, every delivery that was full was given the treatment. Whether it was drives over the covers or neat flicks through the on-side, there were runs to be had.Not if they played away from the body though, as Hinds was to learn. Driving half-cocked, the left-hander dragged one from Yohannan back onto his stumps in the 11th over of the day. Hinds (15) trudged back to the pavilion as Yohannan celebrated. And there was more reason to celebrate two overs later, when Gayle (16) whipped Yohannan around the corner to Dinesh Mongia at square-leg. The West Indies were 45 for two, and the crowd roared as Brian Lara walked out to the middle. It was the perfect chance for Lara to make up for his disappointing showing in the Test matches. It was the ideal opportunity to unfurl his dazzling array of strokes. Harbhajan Singh, however, had different ideas. Tempting a hesitant Lara down the track, the offie had him driving straight at short mid-wicket. Mohammad Kaif took a good catch low down, and Lara (5) was back in the hut. Then came the steadying influence of Ramnaresh Sarwan and Carl Hooper. Tucking the ball away superbly to the on-side for quick singles, the pair kept the fielders on their toes. As if to break the monotony, Hooper planted his foot down and swept Harbhajan Singh for a clean six over mid-wicket.After adding an invaluable 86 runs for the fourth wicket, Sarwan was undone by a good piece of captaincy from Sourav Ganguly. Bringing Virender Sehwag on to bowl in the 32nd over, the Indian captain met with success off just the fourth ball from the part-time offie. Walking across his stumps, Sarwan (44 runs, 69 balls, five fours) was bowled off his pads.Shivnarine Chanderpaul was then needlessly run out, Ryan Hinds stumped off a loose shot, and Ridley Jacobs adjudged caught behind as the wheels came off.And yet, in all this, Carl Hooper stood tall. Driving through the covers with precision and power, the West Indian captain led from the front. Scoring at a brisk pace, Hooper defied the Indian bowling. Pacing his innings perfectly, Hooper gave a sterling display of how a limited-overs knock ought to be played. Unbeaten on 76 (75 balls, six fours, two sixes), Hooper could only watch as Agarkar rapidly cleaned up the tail.Keeping it full and straight, Agarkar had Corey Colleymore trapped plumb in front and followed it up by uprooting Cameron Cuffy’s middle stump. Agarkar ended with figures of three for 36, while Yohannan scalped three for 33. The West Indies were all out for 186 in 44.5 overs. The Indian run-chase was, for the visitors, the proverbial walk in the park. The fact that Sehwag (21) and Ganguly (41) both lost their wickets completely against the run of play, when things looked good for the Indians, did nothing to change the course of the match.Mongia, in a positive frame of mind from the word go, was quick to size up the length of a delivery. When the ball was short, he was onto the back foot in a flash, pulling with ease to the mid-wicket region. The fuller stuff got the full treatment from the wrists, being whipped past or over mid-on.Even the fall of Mongia’s wicket late in the day did little to lift the spirits of the crowd at Barbados. A case of too little too late, really. Mongia, in fine fettle, helped himself to 74 (104 balls, nine fours) before throwing his wicket away when India were in sight of victory at 166 for three. A needless chip shot straight back over Ryan Hinds’ head and fell into the waiting hands of Chanderpaul at mid-off.An uncharacteristically quiet Sachin Tendulkar motored along sedately to reach 34 (45 balls, two fours) as India passed the West Indies total with more than four overs to spare. Rahul Dravid, fresh at the crease was unbeaten on nine.
