One thing’s for certain, Lee Johnson and Kristjaan Speakman will look to sign a player that’s competent in attacking scenarios.

What’s the word?

Speaking last week about what he needed in his side, Johnson admitted that he could do with a player capable of stretching the play a bit more.

Of course, Jack Diamond’s introduction has helped somewhat with that but signing a more experienced professional certainly wouldn’t go amiss.

While this is all going on, Sunderland also have a takeover happening in the background. Prospective buyer William Storey outlined that if he sealed the deal, he’d look to bring in some Premier League players from respective U23 sides.

Thus, The Sunderland Echo have compiled a list of targets that could be available. One such player is Southampton’s Josh Sims.

The winger is currently on loan at Doncaster in League One but his deal with the club expires in January so may be available to move on loan elsewhere.

This deal depends on a host of things. Whether the Saints want to loan him again, or whether he just stays at Donny. Currently, Sims is rated at £1.4m.

The new Williams

Sunderland need to sign quick players in January and in Sims, they’d have their missing ingredient.

Speaking about the 23-year-old winger, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “I think the system’s perfect for him. And he’s not so easy to defend, because he’s small, quick and has good movement.”

That must be music to the ears of supporters at the Stadium of Light, people who became accustomed to some laboured build-up play under Phil Parkinson.

However, most promisingly is his similarities to Jonny Williams. The Charlton attacker spent a period of time on loan with the Mackems in 2017/18 but unfortunately endured most of the season out injured.

That being said, when he did play, he demonstrated immense qualities with the ball at his feet. He was a creative spark and if he’d been fit all season, the Black Cats may have stayed in the Championship.

Sims has six strikes this season and has also created eight goals, and if we compare the two players more closely, there are clear similarities.

For Sunderland, Williams averaged one dribble per game while Sims is currently averaging 0.9 for Donny. Furthermore, they are both fouled with great regularity. The former was brought down 1.4 times a game during his spell in the north-east. Sims, on the other hand, is fouled 1.7 times a game.

Combine that with the fact they can play on either wing or through the middle and you have two creative players who can magic something out of nothing.

Sims would be an astute capture if Speakman can pull off a deal.

أعرب عصام عبد الفتاح، رئيس لجنة الحكام بالاتحاد المصري لكرة القدم، عن استيائه من الانتقادات الموجهة للتحكيم في بطولة الدوري، معتبرًا ما يثار ما هو إلا تربص بالحكام.

وقال عصام عبد الفتاح في تصريحات تلفزيونية بفضائية “أون تايم سبورتس1”: “لا تعليق على شكاوى الأندية ضد الحكام، لأني أرى أن ما يثار لا تتجاوز نسبة صحته الـ 20% فقط”.

وواصل: “نادي غزل المحلة تقدم باحتجاج على أداء حكم مواجهة الأهلي، وكتب في خطابه اشياءً غريبة، وبعيدة عن الدراية بالتحكيم، وأقول لهم هذا عيب ولا يليق، الحكم أدى مباراة جيدة لماذا تهدر حقوقه، أشعر بإحباط بسبب الهجوم على التحكيم”.

وأردف: “أقول للأندية لا تهدموا عنصرًا فعالًا في كرة القدم لا نخبئ اخطائنا ولكن التربص بالتحكيم زائد وبشكل غير عادي، لم أكن أرغب في الظهور الإعلامي واتفقت على تعيين متحدث إعلامي، ولكن ما يحدث كثير، الناس تقلب الحق إلى باطل”.

وتابع: “نحاول خلق أجيال جديدة في التحكيم مثل مصطفى شهدي، وهذا جانب إيجابي يغفله الناس، نسعى للتطوير، البعض يطالب بالتطوير، أدعوهم أن يأتوا ليروا التطوير وما نفعله، نحن نسير على نفس نهج الاتحاد الإفريقي”.

واستكمل: “في نهاية الدور الأول سيظهر 6 حكام جدد وفي نهاية الموسم سيكون العدد 15 حكمًا جديدًا”.

واستطرد: “لم أذهب إلى بيتي إلا يومين منذ أن توليت المهمة من شهر ونصف، ولا أرغب في رئاسة اللجنة، أرغب في خدمة بلادي فقط”.

وكشف: “لا نعلن عن عقوبات الحكام، إلا في الأمور العظيمة أو المخلة بالشرف”.

وأتم: “نتمنى الشفاء لـ ابراهيم نور الدين، بعد إصابته بكورونا، ومن الصعب أن يلحق بكأس العرب، وتحدثت مع الزملاء في فيفا باستبداله بحكم مصري آخر”.

واختتم: “مباريات المرحلة النهائية من التصفيات الإفريقية المؤهلة إلى نهائيات كأس العالم ستقام بتقنية الفار”.

Steve Bruce must agree to sell Dwight Gayle in the January transfer window amid reports Fulham are keen to sign the Newcastle United striker to save their season.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, the Craven Cottage natives are looking into the possibility of luring Gayle to south west London this month rather than waiting until his contract expires in the summer.

Fulham have been long-term admirers of Gayle and believe the 31-year-old can help keep the club in the Premier League, with Scott Parker short on alternatives to Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Cottagers have discussed a potential offer which will see Newcastle net a small fee in the January market that will increase should the attacker help Parker retain his side’s top-flight status.

Clubs from the Middle East including Qatari outfits Al-Gharafa and Al-Duhail are also monitoring Gayle’s situation with his £40,000-per-week deal set to expire at the end of the season, while West Bromwich Albion would rather wait until his contract concludes.

Fulham currently sit three points from safety after four-straight draws but hold two games in hand over 17th-placed Brighton and Hove Albion, yet have struggled in front of the goal with only relegation-rivals Sheffield United, Burnley and West Brom scoring less thus far.

Should Newcastle sell Gayle?

Newcastle must listen to Fulham’s offer should the Craven Cottage natives step forward with a formal bid this month as Gayle has ransacked Mike Ashley’s pockets since being signed for £10m in 2016, whilst showing throughout his time at St. James’ Park that he cannot be trusted to help take the Magpies higher up the Premier League table.

Bruce will likely need convincing having frequently lauded Gayle and stating recently that he hopes the striker will put pen to paper a new contract, while believing the former Crystal Palace frontman – who has earned £9.5m since joining the Toon – has been unlucky with injuries.

“Dwight’s been unfortunate with his injuries, but he knows what I think about him as a player – he’s a goalscorer,” Bruce said, via quotes by BT. “How good it was to see him work tirelessly to get here. At the back end of last season, he was really on fire and he’s had an awful knee injury, but he’s got back.”

Gayle made his first appearance of the season in any competition during December’s 2-1 win over West Brom, in which he scored the winning effort, but has failed to find the back of the net in his following three outings and was an unused substitute in Newcastle’s last two games.

The 31-year-old had missed the first few months of the campaign with a knee injury, adding to calf and hamstring issues sustained during the 2019/20 season that restricted Gayle to 20 Premier League games in which he contributed four goals.

Bruce is unlikely to see much more from Gayle over the remainder of the term so must bin the striker while options are on the table, or be held accountable for the £7m-rated dud walking away for free.

Passado o desastre Lucão, o Tricolor voltou mais organizado e agressivo, com Michel Bastos comandando as ações pelo lado esquerdo e Centurión, sem tanto perigo, pelo direito, depois Rogério e o estreante Kelvin. O problema foi o abuso das jogadas pelo alto, com um Calleri enterrado na área, mas Felipe e Yago sempre bem posicionados. Exceto quando Menar recebeu livre, mas, mesmo à queima roupa, parou em Cássio. Por que faz isso, deve ter se perguntado Lucão…

Para azar do zagueiro, Yago ainda decretou o triunfo sobre suas costas. E com o novo tropeço são-paulino, o zagueiro fica marcado num embate em que não foi o único infeliz, vide a pouca aparição de Ganso, a falta de intensidade de Hudson e Thiago Mendes, os erros de Mena. Lucão premiou o Corinthians, que se não foi brilhante, inicia o ano com ótimos resultados e a esperança de que a habilidade demonstrada por Gioavanni Augusto no clássico supra as baixas de Renato Augusto e Jadson e que André tenha lampejos de Vágner Love. Wolves are in a diabolical rut at the moment, and for the first time since they entered the Premier League, they are stagnating.

This side have been a breath of fresh air to the top-flight. They usually play ruthless counter-attacking football and it was that style which earned them successive top-half finishes.

However, this season has been one to forget so far. With Raul Jimenez injured and with a switch in system to a four-man defence, problems have arisen in their droves for Nuno Santo.

Since Jimenez fractured his skull against Arsenal, the Old Gold have won just two of their last ten games and talk of relegation is starting to loom.

A Black Country derby gave them a perfect way to bounce back but after suffering a 3-2 defeat, it only piled further pressure on Nuno and his players.

Clearly, the manager was not his usual self. He cut a frustrated figure on the bench, not even willing his players on in the dying embers. To epitomise the strange mood around the camp, he even hauled Conor Coady off for the very first time in his tenure.

The defender gave away a penalty and looked particularly out of sorts, finding himself out of position in an unfavoured system. Yet, worse still was the performance of Ruben Neves.

The Portuguese midfielder has played well in recent weeks, scoring against Brighton and Everton, while picking up an assist versus Crystal Palace. Yet, when their rivals West Brom came to town, he was nothing short of abysmal.

Birmingham Live reporter Alex Dicken said at full-time: “Neves has been outstanding over the past few weeks but he didn’t seem able to stay on his feet during the first half. Everything he did was slow and passive and he missed the chance to dominate his first Black Country derby.”

These were thoughts echoed by The Athletic’s Tim Spiers, who delivered a slightly more brutal assessment: “He was absolutely shocking! Completely overrun, kept giving the ball away. Awful.”

During the contest, Neves completed 85% of his passes – worse than Coady – and made just a solitary tackle as West Brom’s midfield runners dominated him completely. For context, he contested just two duels in the whole match – the joint-worst tally of any  Wolves outfield player who started the game.

Neves also failed to provide a single key pass – a tally that Leander Dendoncker bettered by four. Considering the Portugal international is usually someone to play on the front foot, this was a particularly poor statistic.

The midfielder has been one of a few bright sparks in recent weeks but this display was a complete horror show.

In the big games, you need your best players to stand up and be counted. Neves didn’t do anything of the sort on Saturday. His performance betrayed Nuno’s trust.
