The switch of emotions from pure delight to utter frustration was palpable after Celtic’s amazing “treble treble” achievement this weekend.

As everyone celebrated another Scottish Cup victory, the future became bleak with an unnecessary announcement. Obviously, Neil Lennon had been offered a permanent contract to stay at Parkhead next season.

Joy.

A revelation which seemingly ruined the mood all around, it was one probably taken in haste to the achievement. The Hoops have been looking far and wide for a permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers, but have come up empty-handed. As a result, this could bite them back very hard next season.

Firstly, the 47-year-old manager has a huge rebuilding job to do during the summer. The squad has been clumsily assembled over the past few seasons and there are a number of loan players who will be on their way, representing a huge summer for the Hoops.  With Rangers making inroads under Steven Gerrard, they need to bring in some really tough, talented players. Indeed, the European equation’s always looming after mounting uncontested dominance in Scotland, and Lennon has been out of the top level of the continental game for a while.

Frankly, under Lennon, making strides in Europe is almost impossible. In his few months, he’s already a downgrade to Rodgers. With poor squad selection, slowing down Celtic’s attacking intensity and making them more stubborn, his flaws have been visibly in big games. Hearts, five positions behind them in the league took the game to Celtic on Saturday, after all.

Rather than going after another high-profile manager, the Hoops stick with the static Lennon. This abrupt decision could result in long-term nightmares, leading Celtic towards a bitter reality check soon.

West Ham United are interested in Newcastle United midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden, per Chronicle Live.

What’s the word?

The Hammers are looking to strengthen their squad this summer and have been linked with a number of players.

Football FanCast understands that the club are interested in acquiring Aleksandar Mitrovic from Fulham and have also been touted as potential suitors for West Bromwich Albion forward Salomon Rondon.

Hayden has expressed a desire to leave Newcastle as he wishes to move closer to his family down south; manager Rafael Benitez is thus willing to countenance a sale, the report claims.

Benitez, though, also faces an uncertain future and transfer business, per Chronicle Live, is subsequently on hold until he commits to the club.

The Hammers are interested in signing Hayden but they also hold a long-term interest in Shelvey, per the report, and could look to secure his signature.

The latter is currently the Magpies’ highest-earner, with a weekly wage of £80,000.

The London club, however, are only said to be likely to bid for one Newcastle player this summer.

An expensive back-up

Neither Hayden nor Shelvey are likely to play very much if they move to east London.

Declan Rice is the undisputed first-choice in central midfield alongside Mark Noble and, while there is a need to secure a back-up, it seems like this would be a remarkably expensive way of going about it.

Each player is seen as important by Newcastle and Benitez would need owner Mike Ashley to demand a big fee that he could reinvest.

Dealing with Ashley, of course, is complicated even for the staff he employs.

West Ham would do well to look elsewhere, then, otherwise they risk being out of pocket for a player who is unlikely to make more than 15 appearances next season.

Tottenham Hotspur fans have urged young talent Marcus Edwards to turn his career around following a loan spell in the Netherlands with Excelsior.

The attacking midfielder was allowed to move to Holland in August of 2018 and he went on to make 25 appearances in the Eredivisie, scoring two goals and laying on a total of four assists. Excelsior were ultimately relegated.

Edwards has long been hailed as a star of the future and made his debut for Spurs in 2016, playing 15 minutes in a 5-0 EFL Cup win over Gillingham.

He is set to return to the club this summer after enjoying his season in the Netherlands and it remains to be seen if he will be given the chance to play his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team.

His contract expires at the end of next season and there have previously been doubts about his attitude; a loan spell with Norwich City in the 2017-18 season was cut short due to “personal reasons”.

Pochettino, though, has previously compared Edwards with Barcelona great Lionel Messi and fans are hopeful that he could finally deliver on his potential next term.

ورد مروان محسن على هذا الحديث قائلاً: “هجيب شيوخ بقى علشان أبقى أجيب إجوال يعني ولا إيه”.

وتابع: “(كلمني كورة مش تقولي مش بتسجل أهداف)، هناك انتقادات مقبولة وهناك هجوم ودائما تقول عني (ما يستحقش يلعب في منتخب مصر)”.

واستكمل: “هناك أمور لا تصح والهجوم غير مقبول وبيتي يتأثر كثيراً بالهجوم عليّ”.

ورد رضا عبد العال على مروان محسن قائلاً: “أنت مهاجم النادي الأهلي ولا بد أن تسجل الأهداف حتى يتم ضمك لمنتخب مصر”.

وأضاف: “أنا أقول لله، رأس الحربة الذي نعرفه لا بد أن يحرز أهدافًا”.

ورد مروان محسن: “أنا لا أتأثر بأي حديث ولكني أطالب أن يكون هناك احترام وأن نتحدث في الكرة فقط”.

What’s the word, then?

The 19-year-old’s future has been a major talking point this summer, with Europe’s top clubs seemingly desperate to land what appears to be a truly generational talent – the teenager scored crucial goals in the latter stages of the Champions League knockout phases as Ajax made the semi-finals.

De Ligt is quite frankly a freak of nature and his ability, maturity and leadership defy his adolescent years. He already captains the Dutch giants and is a regular fixture in the national team alongside Liverpool colossus Virgil van Dijk.

The wrong approach from Liverpool

A report from the Telegraph revealed that the Reds are set to target ‘low-key’ signings this summer. But how do they expect to overtake Manchester City in the Premier League next season with that approach?

The arrivals of difference makers such as van Dijk and Alisson in 2018 have allowed Liverpool to step it up a notch, and a sixth major European Cup would not have been possible without the influential pair.

The Citizens have spent millions almost every summer, splashing almost £100m on full-backs alone when they moved to sign Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy.

It is these kinds of purchases that keep Pep Guardiola’s men on top of their game and ensure that complacency doesn’t set in – Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp cannot rest on their laurels after picking up their first piece of silverware under the German.

This is a unmissable opportunity in the market for Liverpool. For as good as they were last season, De Ligt represents a huge chance to improve the quality of the starting XI once again ahead of new campaign. Unfortunately though, it appears the Reds are passing it by.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the hunt and one of their targets, Football Insider exclusively reports, is Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips. This young defensive midfielder is one of the key pieces of Marcelo Bielsa’s jigsaw and he could indeed pen a big new contract with the Whites.

However, looking solely from the Wolves’ point of view, this is a chance they should definitely not miss and if there’s a possibility the midfielder is available, they should be doing everything they can to bring him to Molineux. Here are two key reasons why Wolves should push hard for Phillips this summer…

Quality signing

Bielsa has a knack for acquiring great talents and then grooming them until they are ready to become superstars. Phillips is one of his key players and one of the more consistent pieces at Leeds United. Last season, he totalled 44 appearances for the club which made him the player with the third-most appearances in all competitions. Moreover, even though he is just 23 years old, Phillips is very much showing his immense quality on the pitch. Statistically speaking, he was the team’s best defensive performer, topping the per game stats in some key categories, such as tackles (1st) and interceptions (3rd).

It’s safe to say that Bielsa knows how vital Phillips is, otherwise the club wouldn’t be keen on giving him a new and improved contract. In terms of the end product, the defensive midfielder is not involved as much. But still, one goal and three assists in the Championship while mainly being tasked with defending is still a pretty decent return and should not be disregarded. When given the chance, Phillips is no stranger to the opposition’s net.

Wolves could use a player of his skill set

Wolves were solid defensively in the Premier League last season. In terms of goals allowed, they were in the upper part of the table with 46 netted against them throughout the campaign and are right in the middle of the pack in terms of defensive stats. This suggests that a defensive player might not be an absolutely crucial signing but Phillips still justifies their reported interest, especially considering he’s already closing in on their own players while only being 23 years old.

Midfielders Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker boast slightly better stats than Leeds’ talisman but they are also older and more experienced, while operating within a better overall team. Still, the difference is hardly noticeable and with a lot of room for improvement, as well as the right environment for development, Phillips has all the makings of a future star.

Bielsa has used Phillips in two capacities this season, both as a midfielder and a defender, and while the former is certainly his forte, the youngster’s defensive qualities could make him an ideal fit for Wolves’ back three as someone who can step into the engine room when required.
