Southampton fans react as Manolo Gabbiadini scores again for Sampdoria

[ad_pod ]

Former Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini came off of the substitutes’ bench to score for Sampdoria in their 2-1 defeat against Inter Milan at the San Siro on Sunday, and Saints fans were quick to react on Twitter.

The south coast outfit, who currently lie in the Premier League’s relegation zone, sold the Italy international to the Serie A outfit during the January transfer window for an undisclosed fee, and his strike against Inter at the weekend was his second in five outings since the move.

Meanwhile, no Southampton out-and-out striker has scored in the top flight since Shane Long on January 12, and with Danny Ings currently out of action and Michael Obafemi only just returning to training after a hamstring issue, Ralph Hasenhuttl had to rely on the goal-shy Republic of Ireland international and Charlie Austin in the defeat to Cardiff City last time out.

Saints supporters took to social media to have their say on Gabbiadini’s goal, and while one said “Ah yes, but we kept Long and Austin”, another simply asked: “Why did we let him go?”

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Newcastle eyeing record-breaking summer move for Joelinton

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Hoffenheim striker Joelinton, and it looks like something that the club has been working on for quite some time.

What’s the story?

According to Florian Plettenberg, chief reporter for Sport1, Newcastle are set to land Joelinton this summer for a whopping €60m (around £52m).

He even goes so far as to claim the Magpies have been in negotiations with Hoffenheim for “weeks” and that those talks are close to a conclusion.

The full report also claims that the move depends on Newcastle staying in the top flight, though that is seemingly obvious anyway.

The 22 year-old has scored ten times this season, and if the move comes to fruition then Mike Ashley and the Magpies’ transfer team deserve immense credit.

Rondon upgrade?

West Brom named their price for Salomon Rondon recently, telling the Magpies they must shell out £16m to make his loan move permanent this summer, per The Northern Echo.

The powerful Venezuelan got on the scoresheet again on Saturday in the win over Huddersfield, taking his tally to seven league strikes this campaign, and he is adored by both Rafael Benitez and the Toon Army.

However, he will turn 30 towards the start of next season, and the 22 year-old Joelinton represents a much better investment.

Able to play anywhere across the front three but at his best through the middle, the Brazilian youngster is an excellent dribbler, and will get fans off their seats every time he has the ball.

He has excellent pace, good link-up play and you won’t find many strikers around Europe that press and harass the opposition defence quite so intently.

£52m would blow the record-breaking Miguel Almiron fee out of the water, but if the pair can form a long-term pairing packed with pace, creativity and goals, it would be worth every penny.

The Chalkboard: Rubbish vs QPR, Tyler Roberts can play big role against West Brom

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts produced a poor display in his side’s 1-0 defeat against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Tuesday, but he can play a big role against former club West Bromwich Albion at Elland Road on Friday night.

On the chalkboard

With the likes of Adam Forshaw, Kemar Roofe and Jack Clarke missing through injury and illness right now, Roberts has started the Yorkshire outfit’s previous two Championship fixtures having found consistent starts hard to come by previously.

The Wales international has played alongside Mateusz Klich through the middle in something of a No.10 role behind Patrick Bamford, but he certainly wasn’t at his best in the capital and gave the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions – something that didn’t go unnoticed by Whites fans on Twitter as he was heavily criticised.

Despite that, Bielsa has confirmed that the same starting XI that was beaten on Tuesday will be the same one that faces the Baggies, meaning the 20-year-old will get another opportunity to impress.

Can he make a difference?

He certainly can.

Not only will Roberts be motivated when he comes up against a former employer, but he only needs to take a look at West Brom’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United last weekend to see the difference he can make from his position.

Kieran Dowell, who featured in behind the two strikers for the Blades at The Hawthorns, ensured his side took the three points after finishing off a swift counter-attack in the 14th minute.

Leeds’ young player will be featuring in a similar role on Friday, and he needs to stamp his authority on proceedings and exploit the gaps that could appear between the midfield and the backline to get his team back to winning ways in the promotion race – Gareth Barry and Jake Livermore are certainly there to be got at.

Fosu-Mensah could revive his best form with Aston Villa

Aston Villa are still hanging on to the slimmest chance of achieving promotion this season, no matter how farfetched that dream now seems to be.

Dean Smith has simply not been able to get his side playing consistently and that will be frustrating for the former Brentford boss.

For all the talented players he has available, Aston Villa, like seasons past, Smith has failed to deliver when it counts the most.

It seems that Championship football will again be on show at Villa Park next season and that’s extremely disheartening for those fans watching on.

A strong summer transfer window would be the key to any potential success but its whether they still have the ability to acquire some decent players.

Although he’s struggled this season, Manchester United’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah could revive his career in claret and blue.

Fosu-Mensah, (who is valued at £6.3 million on Transfermarkt) would have hoped to play an integral part in Fulham’s Premier League return this season but for all involved, it hasn’t been a success, in fact far from it.

The Cottagers seem destined to go back down into the Championship and Timothy Fosu-Mensah has had no luck in trying to prevent that.

With just 10 appearances so far this season, the Dutchman is very unlikely to be staying at Craven Cottage but could make up for his poor loan spell by moving to Aston Villa instead.

For how bad Villa have been defensively at times this season, Fosu-Mensah could be the solution to improving their back-line.

Dean Smith may struggle to find better value for money than what Fosu-Mensah offers, and if he could produce the performances he previously has, Aston Villa will have a good defender on their books.

Do you agree… Let us know!

Nottingham Forest: Darren Moore is the perfect man for Nottingham Forest

The news of Darren Moore being sacked last Sunday was one of the most surprising and shocking managerial moves to happen in England all season.

A reminder that this is the same Moore that won Premier League Manager of the Month in his only month as a coach in the top-tier of English football, the same man who has been associated with West Brom since 2006, and the same Moore who led the Baggies to 4th in the Championship table.

His sacking was shocking, unjust, and disrespectful to the club he has spent the good part of nearly a year trying to rebuild. And not only have West Brom now set themselves up for failure for the remainder of the season, but they have also let go one of the best up-and-coming managers in the division walk away for the tamest of crimes.

And this is something Nottingham Forest should be taking advantage of.

Forest are all too familiar with a manager leaving midway through a promising season. The sacking of Aitor Karanka and subsequent hiring of club legend Martin O’Neill was on the surface a promising appointment for the club. It lifted the spirits with the fans and there was some genuine hope that this season could be the one that the club make the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

And to his credit, the former Celtic chief has done a solid job since taking the job in January. The Reds have taken points off play-off rivals such as Derby and the aforementioned West Brom, however, loses to the likes of Stoke and Birmingham have raised early question marks.

O’Neill has also been criticised by sections of the fanbase for his handling of record signing Joao Carvalho, who is yet to start a game under the new boss and has only come off the bench in four games under the Irishman.

Enter, Darren Moore. Although his managerial career has been substantially shorter compared to O’Neill’s, Moore has shown what he can do with a team with talented players and solid foundations.

It might not what be what Forest fans want, but if you’re a club that’s looking to build for the future, would you rather have a veteran club legend that’s been in the managerial game for decades or a new exciting young coach brimming with ideas who you can keep around for years?

Moore’s understanding of working and developing youth players also makes him an ideal candidate for Forest. The club has an outstanding reputation with bringing players through the youth academy, and Moore could be the man to bring the next generation of Forest players through at the club.

It might not be the suggestion Forest fans want to hear. After all, there are still 11 games to go in the season and anything could happen between now and the final match, but it would be unwise of the club board to simply wave away the idea of hiring Moore should he be available in the summer.

O’Neill is a club legend and someone all Forest fans adore, but it might be time to admit that he might not be the best man for the job and that the future of the club would be the better in the hands of one of the best young coaches in the country.

Nottingham Forest fans, would you take Darren Moore as manager?

Nottingham Forest: Goal fiasco proves the need for VAR

Another day, another incorrect decision that costs points in the Championship. Nottingham Forest’s disallowed goal for offside completed a day where VAR was once again in the headlines, and it’s unbelievable how some clubs and fans think it’s not needed.

Match officials are human and they get decisions wrong just like players and everyone else does, so the more help they can get to make decisions correctly the better. Yes, Champions League and domestic cup games have shown it takes too long, but it will get quicker. The correct decision is the most important thing.

Forest were the victims on Saturday, as were Swansea, who didn’t have VAR for their FA Cup game with Manchester City because they play in the Championship. Surely, the FA are more than capable of introducing VAR in Championship grounds in the cups just like they are in the Premier League. However, teams in the top two divisions voted against its introduction at the start of this season.

There should be no sympathy for clubs that voted against the introduction and receive bad decisions, but at least their moaning will encourage them to decide otherwise at the beginning of the next campaign. Tens of millions ride on football nowadays and it’s vital referees have the opportunity to correct mistakes.

Many fans believe it kills the emotion of the game, so does that mean those people enjoy their team facing injustice and perhaps missing out on promotion or a play-off spot because of it? Those people are hypocrites and must understand the game is evolving.

Every change faces opposition, but when it’s implemented and perfected, people wonder what we did before it.

Offside was introduced, substitutions rules implemented, then we had goal-line technology, which so many people were against but now everyone knows it’s necessary. It’s important due to the magnitude of today’s game key decisions are correct. It’s as simple as that.

The Championship is not some farmers league without the importance or infrastructure required for VAR implementation. If it’s being used in Premier League grounds in the cups, it should be used in Championship grounds in the same competition.

Next season, let’s hope it’s rolled out across England’s top two divisions for good.
